Poppies for Remebrance- The Spirit is Alive Towards 2015 that will mark the centennary of the Gallipoli and the ANZAC, our coverage is from Australia. Poppies for remembrance represent the young lives that are resting in the battlefields. They were promising, young men that could have been a leader of so many professions, projects, developments in their countries. However, the end result of two Nations emerging from the lives lost marked the century and the centuries to come. We visited the Ambassador of Turkey to Australia, Hon. Reha Keskintepe at Canberra and he kindly contributed to this issue with his introductory to 2015 and its rising value to Australia and Turkey. Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is celebrating its 25th year with a series of concerts and in October the Ottoman Baroque and the Whirling Dervishes is in their programme. A Sema Group with the musicians from Konya, led by Esin Celebi Bayru shall be in Sydney for the performances. I was invited to a Christmas and New Year Function of the Vision Australia by a member friend of mine. The CEO of Vision Australia, Ron Hooton came to the occasion and our introductory meeting turned into a project of twinning them with Vision Turkey and forming a liason for 2015. The soldiers that attended the war were left with a “soul that had impaired vision”, nothing was as bright and shiny anymore. In 2015 a group from Vision Australia, will be visiting Turkey/Gallipoli for remembrance walk at the battle-fields. Meet at Art has Mine Konakci with her four-year process of creating “For a Pittance”, a photographic exploration of descendants of Australia’s early convicts. This exhibition was at the Museum of Sydney for three months and is now travelling all over Australia. Mine Konakci is a Turkish-born Australian and feels a strong connection with both nations and is happy to witness the growing bond between the two nations. For the 100 years of the commemoration, her project is to research and produce new photographic work documenting direct descendants of Turkish and Anzac soldiers who fought in Gallipoli. 10 subjects each from Turkey, Australia and New Zealand will be photographed aiming to capture the proud spirit of the decendants whilst shedding light into their lives through environmental portraiture. Enjoy our from Australia to Turkey issue and think about the Poppies for Remembrance. Spring is a cheerful season with the poppies but sometimes it can be a bitter remembrance.

Turkey ends visa-on-arrival, Introduces e-visa In a move that will make travelling to Turkey simpler and easier, a new visa procedure will be in place from 11 April 2014, which means the practice of obtaining visas upon arrival to points of entry to Turkey will come to an end as of 10 April 2014. All necessary measures are being taken in order to make the transitional period as smooth as possible. With the introduction of this new system, which aims to eliminate the amount of time waiting at Turkish airports, visitors will no longer have to face long queues at the airport to obtain a visa stamp. This new Electronic Visa Application System will enable visitors to obtain an e-Visa online on www.evisa.gov.tr. Visitors can simply fill in their details, make payment and download their e-Visas prior to their travels up to 24 hours before travel. * Applications can be made from up to 3 months to until 24 hours before travel. However, it is advisable to make an application at least one week before departure. * Fees for e-Visas can be obtained via the e-Visa website (www. evisa.gov.tr). The e-Visa fee for UK passport holders is $20 and this provides a multiple-entry e-Visa valid for 90 days. * A minimum 6-month-valid passport, flight (or any other means of transportation) reservation and a credit card (MasterCard, Visa and other frequently used credit and debit cards) is required to obtain an e-Visa. * The e-Visa will be e-mailed to the applicant within 24 hours after the completion of an application. * E-Visas are non-refundable. If an e-Visa is purchased but entry to Turkey is not made, the visa cannot be refunded. * Necessary arrangements are being made to also allow visitors to obtain e-Visas from authorised airline offices, including such offices at airports, and updates will be provided accordingly. * Passengers who are travelling on a cruise ship do not require an
e-Visa if they remain on board. An e-Visa is also not required for any cruise passengers who dock and only tour in the respective Turkish port city for a period of 72 hours. However, they do need an e-Visa if they stay beyond 72 hours and/or if they venture beyond the port during the docking. * Tour operators will be able to apply for group e-Visas and make lump sum payments for them. * During the transition period (now until 10 April 2014), visitors arriving in Turkey without an e-Visa will be able to obtain them via interactive kiosks located at Turkish airports.
CATHIC, to be held June 9-10 at Istanbul
Turkey’s hospitality industry leaders will gather in Istanbul in June for the Turkey and Neighbours Hotel Investment Conference (CATHIC) to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing Turkey’s burgeoning tourism and hospitality industries. CATHIC, to be held June 9-10 at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti Hotel & Conference Center, is supported by the Turkish Tourism Investors Association and represented by Turkish event partner Alkas. It is expected to attract the region’s top hotel investors, operators, developers, advisors, architects and government officials. In a recent interview, Murat Ersoy, president of Atlas Jet and chairman of the Turkish Tourism Investors Association, said 33.5 million tourists visited Turkey in 2013, which generated revenues of $24.5 billion in U.S. dollars during the first nine months. During the last five years there has been double-digit growth in accommodation services, boosting the hotel industry’s profitability and attracting more investors. “International hotel chains, closely following these developments, have started to bring their brands – both in the luxury and midpriced segments – by placing Turkey at the forefront of their expansion strategies,” he said, adding that there are now 4,067
certified hotels in the country representing 1,059,000 beds. Ersoy will address the future of Turkey’s tourism infrastructure at CATHIC. Dr. Daniel Thorniley, president of DT-Global Business Consulting GmbH, will kick off the conference with an update of the worldwide investment climate. He will be followed by Cenk Sidar, chief executive officer & president of Sidar Global, who will present the regional perspective. They will discuss the fundamental strengths underpinning Turkey’s continued growth and development despite recent political issues. “Turkey remains the number-two key strategic investment market in Europe for western investors,” Thorniley said. “Government policy is pro-growth,” helping to make Turkey “one of the most exciting business opportunities in the world.” Additional confirmed speakers include Mehmet Onkal, managing partner of BDO Hospitality Consulting, who will present a market analysis of Istanbul, the Turkish Riviera and secondary cities; Omer Isvan, president at Servotel Corporation, and Rui Barros, managing director and senior vice president EMEA of Wyndham Hotel Group, who will discuss strategies for growth and development in Turkey; and Şenay Azak-Matt, general manager Turkey for Aareal Bank Group, who will share insights into debt and equity financing.

Cappadocia Best Honeymoon Destination 2014 The region of Cappadocia in Turkey has been named ‘Best Honeymoon Destination’ by Lonely Planet in their collection of the world’s hottest trends, destinations and experiences for the year ahead, published in the book Best in Travel 2014. The destinations are selected through a process involving Lonely Planet’s authors, editors and online community then judged by a panel of in-house experts who give each destination in the shortlist a score in line with criteria such as topicality, excitement and “x-factor”. The award was presented to Dr Aysegul Gurgezoglu, director of the London-based Turkish Culture and Tourism Office UK, at World Travel Market (WTM) this week, who said: “I’m thrilled that Cappadocia’s unique qualities have been recognised by Lonely Planet, as it’s a destination that we have been promoting very actively here in the UK. It’s a region that shows yet another facet of fascinating Turkey, a country that has so much worth discovering; so perfect for couples embarking on a new life together.” Lonely Planet writes: “The fairy chimneys of Cappadocia are spectacularly peculiar, a sight that needs to be shared. The region offers plenty of opportunities... but the best way is to wake up before dawn for a balloon ride over the jagged landscape and fantastic dwellings. Post-afternoon-nap, climb the stairs up to Uchisar Castle to watch the sunset from the top of the area’s tallest fairy chimney, where Cappadocia mingles with the clouds and everything from Mount Erciyes to the Pigeon Valley is in view.”Cappadocia is home to one of the most mysterious

Formed at the centre of a once volcanic region, over time wind and weather have sculpted sensual curves, forming the peaks now known as ‘fairy chimneys’. Neolithic man was the first to carve the soft tufa into inhabitable caves with early Christians following by enlarging natural caves to create underground cities, monasteries and churches. A number of cave hotels in the area provide couples with the unique and historical experience of staying in such an intimate and characterful space.

Matching Grant for Catalhoyuk The Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF) has announced today a matching grant challenge in support of research and preservation efforts at the Neolithic site of Catalhoyuk (Çatalhöyük) in Turkey. The Catalhoyuk excavation received significant multiyear funding from TCF under the TCF Turkish Cultural Heritage Programs. TCF funding helped build a shelter to protect the excavation site, establish walkways, panels and signage to enhance the site’s visitor experience, and provide training to conservation students and members of the local community. Catalhoyuk was inscribed on the World Heritage Sites List by UNESCO in 2012 in part due to the diligent efforts of the international excavation team led by Stanford University archeologist Dr. Ian Hodder and improvements to the site as those funded by TCF. The only Neolithic site on the UNESCO list from the Middle East, Catalhoyuk carries universal value for our understanding of the way of life in early agricultural settlements. Inhabited by up to 8,000 people between 7,400 and 6,000 BCE, Catalhoyuk holds, in its streetless settlement of house clusters, numerous wall paintings - including what was recently discovered to likely be the world’s oldest known landscape map. A regular stop on the TCF Teacher Study Tours for many years, in 2013, Catalhoyuk was designated as a special donation and awareness project by TCF. The visiting American teachers on the 2013 tours made personal donations for the Catalhoyuk project and one teacher, Terry Buehner, a history teacher at Burlington High School and Vermont History Teacher of the Year (2011), led a school-wide campaign to raise funds and awareness about Catalhoyuk. TCF will match these and other raised funds for the Catalhoyuk Research Project until the end of 2014. The ultimate

aim of the Catalhoyuk Research Project is to leave behind a wellplanned heritage site that enhances the visitors’ knowledge in numerous ways, including a conservation laboratory, a museum to hold the artifacts and a model house to enable visitors to experience Neolithic homes without damaging the ancient structures. All teachers are invited to explore Catalhoyuk with their students via its informative website and other educational resources. All donations made to TCF as part of this campaign must be marked Ref: Catalhoyuk and sent to the TCF Washington office by the end of the year.

Meet the New Museums
New Museums in Turkey
A
new museum showcasing previously unseen mosaics has recently opened in the southern province of Hatay. With this new larger museum for Hatay, these mosaics are now able to be viewed after their careful restoration. There
is also an archaeologically significant collection of old Hatay coins on display. The ancient settlements of Ucagizli Cave and the mounds of Tell Tayinat and Accana have been reconstructed inside the museum. New Museums Planned: New museums
are also planned for Sanliurfa which will house Turkey’s largest mosaic museum, in Usak where a new museum complex will display the famous King Croesus`s treasure and Troy of the fabled wooden horse. All are expected to open late next year.
Sanliurfa
Troy
Turkey’s largest mosaic museum is currently being built in the southeastern district of Sanliurfa, prompted by the discovery of the world’s most valuable mosaics during building works for a theme park nearby. The mosaics feature hunting and fighting scenes of warrior Amazon women from the Roman era in the fifth and sixth centuries. Experts have classified these mosaics as the most valuable in the world. The large museum complex will include an archaeology museum, an archaeopark and a mosaic museum.
A museum project in the ancient city of Troy is being planned, with the modernist-cubist design for the museum chosen as a result of an architecture competition. The main building will be on the ground level with exhibiting galleries displaying artefacts underground. This long-awaited museum will display the results of excavations at the site of the ancient city of Troy, began over 150 years ago, with experts believing that two or three more centuries of work will be needed to fully discover it. The displays will include the ‘Troy gold’, early Bronze Age jewellery originating from the site. The gold artefacts are delicate and distinctive with two precise techniques, filigree and granulation, having been used in the production of the jewellery, which would have been worn by aristocratic women living 4400 years ago.
Usak The new museum in Usak will be set in a historical old railway station and house King Croesus`s treasure, 363 valuable Lydian artefacts dating from the 7th century BC, as well as other items dating back to 400BC.

WE CELEBRATE OUR 25th YEAR! How thrilling it is to reach our 25th Brandenburg year.
Together with my co-founder Bruce Applebaum, we have presented countless brilliant international and Australian guest artists throughout the Brandenburg’s twenty-five years. With them, we have created this extraordinary, vital and dynamic orchestra and choir of which Bruce and I are immensely proud. Walking on stage to play music is an absolute joy and we love doing it. With careful balance, creative designers like myself have a precious jewel to respect and nurture baroque music and a baroque orchestra. The personality of the Brandenburg exudes brilliance, imagination, joy and elegance. So, with a blaze of strength, excitement and humour, our 25th year celebrations kick off with the spirit of the man behind the Baroque - J.S.Bach. The fusion of old and new gave me the inspiration to invite one of Australia’s leading composers to write a piece for our opening concert series of the year.
The Sydney Olympic Games Opening Ceremony gave the world the opportunity to hear the brilliance of Elena Kats Chernin. Together with Bach, it will be a charged, emotional and triumphant concert by the Brandenburg Choir and Orchestra and some ravishing music. The 2014 season has an edge, and it’s the next generation of spectacular young superstars who will dominate the year. Avi Avital an Israeli mandolinist, and the stunning Russian baroque violinist Dimitry Sinkovsky will absolutely radiate razor sharp finesse with virtuosity and purity. One of the unforgettable programs will be the Ottoman Baroque series - a magical journey climaxing with the hauntingly beautiful Turkish Whirling Dervishes from Istanbul. There is rhythmical momentum with high performance masterpieces of Mozart-the Jupiter Symphony and the exquisite Concerto for Flute and Harp. Come and indulge yourself in good living and a simple pleasure. Surround yourself with the sounds of the Brandenburg, its glittering international artists and my 2014 25th Anniversary Season. Meet the Brandenburg Orchestra
The Story of the Brandenburg / Ottoman Baroque One of Australia’s artistic treasures celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2014 and one of the highlights in its year of festivities will be a creative collaboration with Australians and Turkish artists. The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is led by charismatic Artistic Director Paul Dyer AO: “We mostly play music of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries using original edition scores and instruments of the period. Our mission is to bring fresh life and vitality to baroque and classical masterpieces.” “For many years we focused on very specific periods of music from very specific areas of Europe,” says Paul. “But now 25 years on, we are more likely to take new musical adventures, and that is what we aim to do with our Ottoman Baroque concert series in late October.” Paul and the Brandenburg now have an international reputation for playing the Jill Berry, Bridget O’Brien, Paul Dyer, Seville Oren Konakci, Steven Godbee music of Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart composers,” says Paul. “I want to widen the circle, to introduce and their contemporaries with excellence, our audience to new sounds and new experiences.” For the energy and vitality. In 1998 The Age newspaper proclaimed Ottoman Baroque concerts he devised the storytelling device the Brandenburg “had reached the ranks of the world’s of a traveller who is following the early trade routes and The best period instrument orchestras”. “But I want to do more Silk Road: “I love the idea of a concert in which we trace some exploration into what else was happening musically outside of the musical experiences that a traveller might have on each France, Germany, Italy and England around the time of these

stopover, starting in Paris and ending in Turkey.” The music of each country and culture visited is the product of the fashions of the day, the religions, the cultures, the history and the whims of royalty and the wealthy. The concert starts with a Turkishinspired march by Lully, an Italian composer who became one of the most influential musicians working in the court of Louis XIV. Lully, like Rameau, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn, was inspired to write music based on the Turkish marches so popular in Europe in that era. After the French court, Paul’s traveller makes his way through Germany before heading to Rome. “The most astounding and profound music was to be heard at the Sistine Chapel,” adds Paul. “Here we experience one of the most beautiful pieces of vocal music ever written, the Allegri of Misere.” A trip to Spain follows, with the music of the fandango. “The instruments featured change as we travel to new countries. In France we hear a lot of the transverse flute, and in Germany
the oboe and strings take prominence. In Italy it is all about the voice but in Spain the fandango comes alive with the harpsichord and castanets. “Once we hit Greece and Turkey the instruments and the sound will change dramatically. In the grand bazaar there is a different pulse and rhythm. We find different colours, aromas and language. There is a different mysticism. The music touches us differently, both emotionally and spiritually.” The climax and finale of Ottoman Baroque will be reached when the traveller arrives in Konya, where he sees the dervishes. “The twirling ritual of the dervishes is not something that many Australians have experienced or understand the history behind. But this a tradition steeped in inclusivity, tolerance, love and respect. To watch the dervishes is hypnotic, exciting and awe-inspiring. This will be an unforgettable experience not only for the audience, but also the musicians of the Brandenburg.” Paul is excited to be collaborating with Turkish musicians and dervishes to create this unique concert experience.

He and his musicians have previously collaborated with the Paris-based L’Arpeggiata which melds baroque, contemporary jazz and Italian folk music. More recently he worked with the Argentine group La Chimera on a program of Italian madrigals and tango from Buenos Aires. The Orchestra enjoys great success in Australia, performing before a live audience in excess of 40,000 people each year, and hundreds of thousands more through national broadcasts on ABC Classic FM radio. The Brandenburg’s sixteen recordings on the ABC Classics label include five ARIA Award winners for Best Classical Album, the Australian equivalent to winning a Turkish Music Award, a Grammy or a BRIT Award. “We have performed in Japan, Germany, France, Austria and the UK,” says Paul. “I’d love to explore the opportunity to bring our orchestra to Turkey in the coming years. Of course through our recordings it is possible for Turkish audiences to become familiar with our sound and style, but to take to the stage there would certainly be a musical experience that I would always treasure.” February’2014

has the power to overcome politics and socialdifferences whilst it can embrace history it can also move beyond it. We aretargeting a project that is highly contemporary that can reflect the changesin Turkey, Australia and New Zealand in the course of the 100 year and howthey have joined the global world in contemporary cultural attitude.
For many, perhaps all, Australians and New Zealanders who visit Gallipoli, are confronted with the realization of the horrific realities of war andsadness of young, innocent ANZAC Soldiers that lost their lives. However, the most moving moment comes from the words of Turkey’s leader of the time,“Timeless” ATATURK. In 1934 ATATURK wrote a tribute to the ANZACs killed at Gallipoli; “THOSE HEROES THAT SHED THEIR BLOOD AND LOST THEIR LIVES...YOU ARE NOW LYINGIN THE SOIL OF A FRIENDLY COUNTRY. THEREFORE, REST IN PEACE. THERE IS NODIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE JOHNNIES AND THE MEHMETS TO US WHERE THEY LIE SIDE BYSIDE NOW, HERE, IN THIS COUNTRY OF OURS...YOU, THE MOTHERS, WHO SENT THEIRSONS FROM FARAWAY COUNTRIES WIPE AWAY YOUR TEARS; YOUR SONS ARE NOW LYING INOUR BOSOM AND ARE IN PEACE.AFTER HAVING LOST THEIR LIVES ON THIS LAND THEY HAVE BECOME OUR SONS ASWELL”. This inscription is on a plague as one leaves the Gallipoli site. It is aheart rendering moment of beauty in words after an emotionally intenseviewing and a difficult climb. The same plague appears on the Kemal ATATURK Memorial at Anzac Parade, Canberra. The starting point of the artistic journey can start from here. Most of the men that fought at Gallipoli
are aged or passed away but their stories of heroism and friendship lives on. “Brother” is the word used by Turks for any Australian or New Zealender that visit Turkey today. They are “family” as their ancestors are resting at Gallipoli and the connection willremain forever. This has already happened as we have our sons and familiesnow living in Australia. The relationship established in 100 years throughwar this time shall be strengtened in brothership through ART. The ART Project will travel from Australia,New Zealand to Turkey, absorbingthe culture, history and landscape. Local people and local dialogue willhighlight this photographic art event. Visits to Gallipoli and to the vastregions of provincial Turkey shall be made. Turkish artists will

Introduction of CEO of Vision Australia As the Chief Executive Officer of Vision Australia, the nation¹s largestblindness organisation, I am proud to announce that we are planning a veryspecial trip to Turkey in 2015. Of course this centenary year of theGallipoli landing is a very important, solemn and historic time and manythousands of Australians and New Zealanders will be visiting Turkey duringthe year. Our group, which will include both blind and sighted people, will bevisiting to raise funds in Australia for Vision Australia and to visitGallipoli to pay our respects and to build the relationship between Turkeyand Australia. As well, we will be visiting a Turkish blindness organisationto share ideas and learn about services offered and to meet up with Turkishpeople who are blind or have low vision. I am also a very proud New Zealander working in my adopted home, Australia,so this trip has a special significance for me, as well. Australians and New Zealanders were united when our fathers, grandfathersand great-grandfathers, the original ANZACS, were brought together in 1914as young men who left our shores to fight a war in remote lands. They wentin order to honour their country and to look out for their mates. While our last ANZAC soldiers passed away many years ago, their legend liveson in the hearts of all Australians and New Zealanders.

Black Diggers
Telling the untold story of Indigenous soldiers in WWI A Queensland Theatre Company & Sydney Festival production Australia
T
o mark the eve of the centenary of the First World War, Sydney Festival presents a work of significance, scope and ambition, in a world premiere event at Sydney Opera House. Directed by the Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company, Wesley Enoch, and written by Tom Wright, Black Diggers uncovers the contribution of First World War Aboriginal Diggers, following their exceptional stories from their homelands to the battlefields of Gallipoli, Palestine and Flanders. An all-male, all-Indigenous cast will evoke these heroic men, largely unknown to history. Black Diggers is long overdue. Drawing upon new research and extensive consultation, the production reclaims a forgotten chapter of the story we tell ourselves about Australia’s wartime legacy, shying away from none of it. While Black Diggers will evoke the deep tragedy of war, and the particular tragedy of Indigenous Australians” participation, it will also celebrate and affirm their legacy and contribution, placing the Indigenous soldier within the mythology and canon of how we, as a country, think of our soldiers who served. Moving through three phases of Indigenous soldiers” involvement in the Great War – enlistment, life in the trenches, and returning home – to tell an amalgam of Black Diggers” experiences and representations, the story of Douglas Grant becomes the throughline to this strong and theatrically robust work. Sydney Festival Director, Lieven Bertels, says of the work:

“The area in which I live in Belgium is known throughout the Commonwealth as Flanders” Fields, the central battlefield during WW I. This conflict stands out as one of the darkest pages in the history of mankind, and one that had an impact upon millions of people across the globe at a scale that had never happened before. The silent, white headstones of the thousands of soldiers who died in my part of the world remain as powerful an image today as they were so many years ago. In the town next to mine, a lone Aboriginal Anzac digger lays buried, Private Rufus Rigney Service No. 3872, a brave Ngarrindjeri boy from the shores of Lake Alexandrina, South Australia. He chose to fight for a country that wasn’t even his, according to the government of that time. Later, I discovered almost 1000 Aboriginal diggers had fought in WW1. I felt we had to tell their story before we start to commemorate the Anzac centenary in 2015. Director Wesley Enoch says: ““When history has forgotten us we have to find ways of telling our stories. The history of conflict in this country goes hand in hand with our stories of survival. Black Diggers is a collection of stories about the men who fought for this country and in this country. The war they faced was as much for recognition as it was for King and country and their legacy can be seen in the reconciliation movement of today… black and white fighting together to overcome injustice. There is official history and there are the stories and in between there is Black Diggers.”

ABOUT DOUGLAS GRANT Grant was born in approximately 1885 in the Bellenden Ker Ranges in Queensland. As a baby, his parents were killed in either a massacre or a raid, and he was rescued by two members of a collecting expedition from the Australian Museum, Robert Grant and EJ Cairn. Sent to Robert’s parents in Lithgow, Robert later adopted Douglas, who was raised and educated with his son Henry in Annandale. Douglas worked as a draughtsmen in Sydney for 10 years before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in 1916. While regulations against Aboriginals leaving the country without government approval initially prevented Douglas from leaving with his Battalion, regulations were later lifted and he left for France in August that same year. In April 1917, Grant was wounded and captured in Bullecourt and held as a Prisoner of War at Wittenburg, where he was studied by German doctors, scientists and anthropologists as an object of curiosity. Repatriated to England in 1918, he visited his foster parents” relatives in Scotland and the next year embarked for Australia. Demobilised in July that year, he went back to work as a draughtsman before moving to Lithgow to work as a labourer. He was active in returned serviceman’s affairs
and ran a „digger’s session” on local radio. By the 1930s his foster parents and brother had died and he went to Sydney, where he worked as a clerk at Callan Park Mental Asylum (although some reports suggest he was an inmate). He died in 1951 in Prince Henry Hospital. He was unmarried. Grant suffered profound rejection on his return home and developed alcohol problems. He was a literate man, and could play the bagpipes. He had, when he wanted to, a thick Scottish accent. There is a lot of conflicting research when it comes to Douglas Grant, and other Indigenous soldiers in World War One. This is just one version of his narrative. Jointly organised by three Italian PCO’s AIM Group, Studio Ega and Triumph Group, on behalf of the ICCA Italian Committee, chaired by Federica Lucini, the Summit has seen a record participation of 70 delegates from 11 countries. “The Mediterranean Chapter has one of the largest number of members of all the operating ICCA Chapters” explains the Chairperson Elif Balci Fisunoglu. “The Summit is the result of the need of the members to be able to confront each other on themes of common interest, to analyse the complete scenario of the meeting industry in the Mediterranean area, and to try to find common solutions to the challenges of today’s market. Particular focus is given to the theme of destination marketing, an area which directly involves Convention Bureau’s, PCO’s and Congress Centers”. “The Italian Committee enthusiastically accepted the suggestion made by ICCA’s CEO Martin Sirk to host the Summit which has been designed to give greater cohesion to the Mediterranean Chapter” declared Federica Lucini. “I am particularly satisfied that Italy is giving a strong sign of participation through the very high number of members present, and by the commitment shown by AIM Group, Studio Ega and Triumph Group in organising the Event”. Work began on Monday, February 3rd at the Marriott Park Hotel, venue of the Event, with an introduction given by Emma Aru, President of Studio Ega. Her speech dealt with the theme of the competitiveness of destinations on the congress market, and explained that quality, costs and the reputation of meeting spaces together with the accessibility of the destination, the mobility solutions offered and the quality and reputation of the hotels are the main aspects taken into consideration by PCO’s and event organisers when choosing a destination. On Monday night, the Gala Dinner took place at the Enoteca La Torre, a Michelin starred restaurant located inside the villa Laetitia,

prestigious historical palace and event location, owned by the Fendi family. The second day of the Summit, Chaired by Pier Paolo Mariotti, Meeting Manager of EURAC in Bolzano, focused on trends and market perspectives as well as on the debate between representatives from some of those countries where there is a lack of a National Convention Bureau, who illustrated their strategies of destination marketing aimed at the meeting and event sector. Martin Sirk opened the session with a reflection on the changes that have characterised the sector over the last two decades: the transition, affirmed Sirk, went from a congress market focused on infrastructures and tourist aspects to one which is concentrating on the transfer of knowledge and intellectual assets as factors of competitiveness and economic development. The second presentation was realized by Elif Balci Fisunoglu, Chairperson of the ICCA Mediterranean Chapter and General Manager of the Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau, who illustrated the positive impact of the cultural factor as an attraction for a destination. The case analysed was that of Istanbul which, thanks to the appreciation and communication regarding its artistic and cultural patrimony (in 2010 it was the European Culture Capital), has increased its reputation as a destination and has registered a consistent increase in tourist and congress delegate flows, so much so that it passed from being in 17th place in the ICCA ranking in 2009 to its present 9th place for countries worldwide that host the greatest number of Association Congresses. Director of Turkish Embassy Culture & Tourism Office in Rome; Enis Uğur also followed the presentation. The day came to a close with a round table confrontation between destinations on the theme of the National Convention Bureau. The Summit of the Mediterranean Chapter came to its conclusion with a presentation by the city of Antalya, city that will host the ICCA International Congress from 1st to 5th November 2014. As closing remarks, Martin Sirk commented, “I believe that the main object of the Summit, that of being a moment of aggregation and cohesion between members of the Mediterranean area, was fully satisfied”. “From my point of view, the exchange between members on the themes of market and business is the best way to realise that most problems are common to all countries and that solutions can be shared”.

The Meeting Professional Highlighted Istanbul
Meeting Professionals International – MPI’s award-winning magazine ‘The Meeting Professional’ highlighted Istanbul in its February issue. The two-page article about Istanbul, presents successful host of that hosted European Cities Marketing (ECM) Summer School by Istanbul Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and MPI’s European Meetings & Events Conference which will be held this month in Istanbul. Written by Blair Potter, the article covers an interview with ECM Summer School course leader Pier Paolo Mariotti. The article says that when you mix 54 students from 20 countries with 15 senior meeting professionals in an educational setting, you get the European Cities Marketing (ECM) Summer School’s 27th edition of its diverse education program, held this past August in Istanbul, Turkey. Mariotti said these gatherings are more than just more than just standard classroom lessons—they are hands-on, real-world examples explained by senior professionals with vast experience. Mariotti said Istanbul was selected as host city, among other reasons, because the regional meeting industry is flourishing and the students were able to see firsthand how large conferences are managed—in fact, the massive FDI Annual World Dental Congress shared dates with the Summer School. “Istanbul is a major, mature meeting destination, which offered both faculty and students the opportunity to experience best practices for our business: a sort of ‘meeting lab’ where everything could be studied, researched and tested if valid,” he added. “The natural beauty of the city, its exciting scene blending modern city life and history and its modern infrastructure make it a unique meeting place for international congresses and meetings. We are a very active member of ECM and we believe in the importance of hosting sector events in our destination. Istanbul’s geographical location and position within the meeting sector played a key role in this,” said Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu; General Manager of ICVB. The magazine is also informed readers about the MPI’s European
Meetings & Events Conference, which will be held February 23-25 in Istanbul. A photographic Exhibition that travels in timeA convict in the family? The very meaningful exhibition of the artist on the convicts that were sent from England to Australia with the petty objects that they were convicted of and staged by their great great grand children of almost 8th generations. The exhibition was held at the Museum of Sydney on the site of the first Government House from 13 April to 14 July 2013 http://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/ exhibitions/convict-family This photographic exploration of descendants of Australia’s early convicts is now travelling all over Australia. The offspring of these convicts have turned Australia into the proud, successful, wonderful Nation that it is today. These were the great great grand chidren that gave their lives at Gallipoli 100 years ago. That is the reason we have this unique, meaningful work of art in this issue that we are dedicating to the 100 years of the Gallipoli and the ANZACS. Editors Note

Most convicts transported to Australia were convicted of petty theft, the majority of which were considered to be minor crimes by today’s standards. Stolen items varied from shoes to fabrics, coats to pocket watches, purses to sheep, and jugs to yarn More than 160,000 people, an overwhelming number, were transported ‘beyond the seas’ between 1787 and 1868 to serve their sentences, which were usually seven or 14 years. As a photographer, what interested me was the impact that the theft of objects—most of a relatively small value—could have on people’s lives. As a result, the photographs depict the descendants with a representation of the item that their ancestors had stolen; with the items representing a link between the ancestor and descendant.

Mine Konakci Biography Mine Konakci’s fascination with Australia’s convict past started when she was commissioned to photograph a convict descendant high-school student for a heritage magazine. When she started researching the convict period, she was amazed to discover that most of the convicts transported to Australia were convicted of petty theft, the majority of which were considered to be very minor crimes by today’s standards. When she embarked her master’s degree in documentary photography at The University of Sydney, documenting direct descendants of convict settlers for her master’s project was the obvious choice. This idea also related to her long-term fascination with archaeology, and her belief of unique links artefacts can provide to our past. ‘As a photographer, what interested me was the impact that the theft of objects—most of a relatively small value—could have on the lives of those involved’ she says. As a result, the photographs depict the descendants
with a representation of the item that their ancestors had stolen; with the items representing a link between the ancestor and descendant. For this project, she retained a persistent visual aesthetic by documenting the subjects in a democratic and uniform way. Her visual style is defined by her attraction to colour and graphic compositions drawing inspiration from graphic design. One of her images of this project was selected as a finalist for both National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012, and Moran Photographic Prize 2012. She held group exhibitions at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Sydney College of Arts and Australian Centre of Photography. This is her first major solo exhibition. The artist lives and works in Sydney. for her master’s project. This idea also related to her long-term fascination with archaeology, and her belief of unique links artefacts can provide to our past. On a personal note, as an Australian with Turkish heritage, I mustconfess how fascinated, indeed even envious, I am of people who are ableto trace back their family history for so many generations. Such researchis limited in Turkey due to the inadequacy of written records prior to thecountry becoming a modern state. I believe that knowledge of one’s pastdevelops a stronger sense of belonging, and enables one to pass on thisprecious gift to subsequent generations.I also aim to highlight the effect these displaced people had on the creation of Australia’s modern cultural and national identity. I find this segment of Australian history fascinating and believe this project will enable viewers to reflect on their own past.

European Pavilion to Grow by 66% at GIBTM Business destinations in the EU are now on the cusp of an influx of business travellers from the UAE, after the European Parliament voted for Emiratis to be exempt from obtaining visas to visit any of the 25 Schengen countries last week. “A further announcement will be made regarding the execution of the decision, but effectively this means Emiratis will be able to travel freely to 25 countries in the EU for periods of up to 90 days without a visa, said Lois Hall, Exhibition Manager of the Gulf Incentives, Business Travel and Meetings Expo, (GIBTM) which takes place at The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on 24-26 March 2014. After a similar decision by the UK to relax visa requirements for UAE nationals (online visa applications 48 hours in advance), the stage is set for a whole new chapter of business travel from the region, certainly if the scheme is extended to other Gulf nations. Ready to benefit from the new ruling at this year’s GIBTM, is the European pavilion, which contains 19 companies and destinations, and is 66% larger
than last year. Debutants include companies such as Spain’s Iberostar, Barcelo Hotels and Resorts, I’way Express from the Czech Republic, Talaria Experience from Madrid, as well as Arsenal Football Club. France alone receives over 22,000 visitors from the UAE, each year, and according to an exclusive Ernst & Young report, which is to be revealed at GIBTM, Paris is the most preferred destination for Middle Eastern business travellers. London comes in at number two and Frankfurt at number five. The report also forecasts acceleration in business travel, both inbound, and outbound from the Middle East region. This year’s GIBTM will accommodate 300 exhibitors from 35 countries including up to 300 influential Hosted Buyers that will attend the event, with 8,500 pre-scheduled appointments. Representatives from major companies including Kuoni Events, TE Connectivity, UHY International, Medicongress, Mary Kay, HelmsBriscoe, FEI Company, China International Medicine Exchange Association International Service Center, Contendam and Portigon Financial Services have all been accepted onto the highly sought after programme.
CITS Buyers’ Expectations Reflect Clout of Chinese Buying Market China International Travel Service (CITS) International MICE will be leading a delegation of 30 CITS buyers whose buying responsibilities span across all 31 administrative divisions of Mainland China, and encompass both outbound and domestic MICE procurement. Collectively, CITS buyers represent a wide and diverse range of corporate, government and association clients in China with connections to more than 1,400 tour operators and travel agencies in all parts of the world. For CITS’s Qingdao buyer Yu Zhong, MICE procurement is a core target this year, especially in terms of meetings and incentive travel. Citing major client Haier Group, Yu says “With an account
like Haier, the whole country stands to benefit whenever they hold a seasonal product launch as the campaign literally spans across all the cities in China. Hoteliers and land tour operators are direct beneficiaries since accommodation and organised tours are a definite part of the client requirements.” IT&CM China 2014 will be held from April 15 to 17 at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. This is the 8th instalment of the international MICE event that seeks to “Promote China to the World and the World to China”. ANKARA
A
nkara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great),
and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity
as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.

T
he former capital of three successive empires-Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman-the city is a fascinating mixture of past and present, old and new, modern and traditional. The museums, churches, palaces, mosques and bazaars, and the sights of natural beauty seem inexhaustible. As you recline on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected in the windows and slender minarets on the opposite shore you understand, suddenly and profoundly, why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build on this remarkable site. IZMIR
I
zmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. It is Turkey’s first port for exports and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader among the twenty that Turkey counts. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa), and under either larger companies
or SME’s, affirm their name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity. Izmir is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism and gender roles. The Izmir Convention & Visitors Bureau (Izmir CVB) was founded in 2007 by Izmir Tourism Promotion Foundation (IZTAV), as a non-profitable, independent of any marketing structure information exchange bureau. Izmir CVB’s mission is to promote the city’s rich cultural and natural assets and it’s great potential on a national and international level and is seeking guidelines and best practice to develop the city’s congress tourism.
