Turkey’s Travel and Tourism in 2015

The East Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition - Emitt 2015 is held 22-25 January 2015 at Tuyap Exhibition Center in Istanbul, Turkey. Over 4,500 travel companies; tour operators, travel agencies, hotels, airlines, cruise operators, national tourist boards, transportation services, medical tourism providers and tourism institutes from 71 countries attended the 19th edition of the exhibition. Russian travelers are number two in overall guests in Turkey but number one in Antalya at more than 3.3 million. Turkish tourism professionals commented that the ongoing economic crisis and falling ruble in Russia may reduce travel from Russia to Turkey by 30-35% this year. However, Turkish tourism professionals believe that Turkey’s inbound tourism will mostly cover the losses. Turkish tourism industry sees a great increase in the early vacation reservations by Turkish travelers. With the early reservation campaign for summer holiday, Turkish travelers save significantly on holidays.

6.1 million Applied for Turkey’s e-visa

As the number of Turkish travelers traveling abroad reaches 10-million point, many international destinations attended this year’s Emitt.

In a move that will make travelling to Turkey simpler and easier, the Foreign Ministry of Turkey introduced e-visa system in April 2013. A total of 6.1 million people applied and 88 percent of those applications were approved leading to 5.5 million people obtaining a visa online. When it is launched, an average of 2 thousand e-visas issued every week. Today Turkey issues more than 10 thousand e-visa daily. During summer season, Turkey issues an average of 40 thousand e-visas daily. Turkey issued the most e-visa on 7 August 2014 with a total of 44 thousand e-visas. Britons were the most frequent users of the e-Visa system with 1.6 million applications while the Dutch came second with over 600,000 applications. The other countries that topped the list, ranked third through 10th, were Iraq, Belgium, Poland, the U.S., Norway, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Spain. Visitors can simply visit www.evisa.gov.tr, fill in their details, make payment and download their e-Visas prior to their travels up to 24 hours before travel.

IMEX identifies four key trends for 2015

The IMEX Group presents a round-up of industry predictions for the year ahead. 1. ‘Play’ gives new meaning to profit 2014 was the year that ‘play’ as a tool for unlocking creativity and new sources of competitive advantage returned to business. In truth it had never left but the current manifestation of ‘play’ has a distinctly 21st century flavor. According to IMEX guest speaker, Creativity Guru, Rhea Blanken, Einstein reputedly said: “Play is the highest form of research.” Gartner has been predicting for the last few years that in 2015 up to 40 percent of Global 1000 organizations will use gamification as their primary mechanism for transforming business operations, citing Nike, Quirky and My Fitness Pal as leaders in this space. The rise of “double bottom line” companies and entrepreneurs appears to support this trend. In the new business matrix where “profits meet purpose” it’s often the case that playfulness, creativity and fewer corporate do’s and don’ts are fundamental values in the mix. 2. Meeting and event Apps Apps continue to be ‘sexy’ (in advertising parlance) and their strength and novelty will be unbounded in 2015. But this is not apps for app’s sake, as paper swaps or standalones. Rather meeting and event apps will be seamlessly linking across other media platforms, and especially websites, in line with customer/community market needs and pain points, deeply connected to realtime analytics and incorporating interactions such as live messaging, polling and other instant engagement and feedback mechanics. The IMEX/QuickMobile global survey reported that 60 - 63% of all respondents had used a mobile app for at least one of their events in the past two years - and 92% of corporate event marketers had done so. Additionally seven of the 10 finalists in IMEX America’s Tech Start-up competition were apps, clearly demonstrating that this is fertile ground for fast innovation and added value. 3. Let’s Take it “Outside” In 2015 expect to see meeting spaces and formats going through even more of a revolution as the principles of meeting design become more firmly embedded throughout

18

February’2015 MeeTurkey

the supply chain. Where wifi allows set meetings free to ‘roam’ it also creates a subtle pressure to be ‘always on’. Witness David Silverman of the Harvard Business Review suggesting 50-minute meetings so people have the chance to take a breath in between and actually be on time for today’s inexorable back-to-back work commitments. Contrast that with Arianna Huffington (of Huffington Post fame) who likes to hold walking meetings -- supporting research from Washington University that workers are more engaged, less territorial and more collaborative when they’re working on a project while standing upright. Finally take note of the ‘slow meetings’ trend that’s come back round again. A return to the first principles of faceto-face meetings, no devices, no distractions and a focus on less, rather than more, could be one of the defining developments of the coming year. Add a five-minute guided meditation at the front of your meeting (no need to hold hands, just breathe) and your gathering is now bang on trend. 4. Wellness is Fit as a Fiddle Beyond drinking water, eating protein-laden nuts and taking a quick, rejuvenating massage there is a higher level of spiritual awareness starting to make its way into meeting keynotes, sessions and formats. When both Time Magazine and Forbes give space to a topic then it has surely ‘arrived’. In this case it’s mindfulness that’s earning the “ink.” Also, with leading proponents such as Deepak Chopra (MPI’s WEC keynote this summer) reaching global rock star status, and CEOs such as Oprah Winfrey, Russell Simmons (Def Jam), Marc Benioff of Salesforce.com and Rick Goings of Tupperware endorsing the business and spiritual benefits of meditation, the meetings industry and meeting planners have a great opportunity – and importantly, the permission - to shift this new slant on wellness out of the spa and into the spotlight. Lee Papa, wellness advocate, transformation advisor and IMEX America speaker summed it up: “I believe this is the new paradigm of business….it’s a time of moving into working from the heart and using our internal navigation to be more powerful and more authentic.” Many of the themes above will be reflected in the education programs and initiatives on offer at both IMEX in Frankfurt May 19 – 21st at Messe Frankfurt and IMEX America, Oct 13 – 15 (Smart Monday, Oct 14) in Las Vegas, 2015.

Meet at Museum

Istanbul Naval Museum 24

The Naval Museum is situated in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district and is waiting to be explored by researchers and visitors. Some of its featured exhibitions include the galley used by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV, the 444-year-old Ottoman flag taken by the Holy League during the Battle of Lepanto and returned to Turkey 51 years ago by the former Pope Paul VI, part of the defensive chain that stretched across the Bosporus that was ordered by Constantine XI to protect the city, the Golden Horn from Ottoman forces and the İnebolu Boat, which carried ammunition over the Black Sea at the time of the Turkish War of Independence. Now museum featuring almost 20,000 works of art, Former Major Süleyman Nutki played a pioneering role in the foundation of the museum. It was established in 1961 at its former location in Dolmabahçe Palace. Six years later, the museum was moved to its current location. Since its reopening, almost 190,000 people, among whom are 86,000 students and 12,000 foreign tourists, have visited the museum. Museologist Ece Irmak spoke to an Anadolu Agency reporter and said that the Istanbul Naval Museum deserves more

February’2015 MeeTurkey

attention thanks to its newly renovated building designed with contemporary museology standards. Spread across 10,000 square meters, an additional new building next to the museum will be ready this year and a passage will be built to connect the two buildings. Irmak said the museum has a multi-purpose congress center with a seating capacity for 170 people, two rentable art galleries, one cafe, workshop space for children and two lounges. At the entrance, there are sculptures featuring the important names of Turkish naval history. The 40-meter-long historic galley is one of the first pieces that draw in the visitors. Irmak said the galley is the only remaining example of its kind. It occupies the largest place in the museum and looks as if it was going to set off on the waters of the Bosporus with its 144 sailor mannequins. The floor where the galley rests also features intricately embellished imperial boats used by sultans, members of the empire and senior statesmen. The boats used by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during his presidency are on display on the same floor as well. Paintings depicting Istanbul, Ottoman fleets and Turkish naval history are among the other attractive works on the floor.

Standing as one of the most prestigious museums in Turkey with its rich, historical collections and decorative architecture, the Istanbul Naval Museum reopened its doors on, after a six-year renovation. The museum’s other facade facing the Bosporus is mainly covered with glass. Indeed, the Bosporus looks like a painting from there. Visitors reach the upper floor through a corridor whose walls are decorated with miniature ships and paintings taken from the prestigious collections of Turkish naval repertories. Visitors can also see a number of other interesting objects such as the Ottoman flag mentioned above. The Ottoman navy was defeated in the Battle of Lepanto and the Holy League took the banner. The flag was kept at the Vatican until Pope Paul VI presented it to Turkey in 1964. The 5-meter-long silk flag was used by Grand Admiral Müezzinzade Ali Pasha during the battle on Oct. 7, 1571. The flag was decorated with Quranic verses from Surat al-Fath (The Victory), the testament of faith and a zulfiqar. A boat, which was added to the museum collection in 2004, draws attention with its simple design. Visitors can read the following line on it, “Milli mücadele zaferi amillerinden Gazi İnebolu” (Veteran İnebolu, a figure from the victory of the Turkish War of Independence). The İnebolu Boat secretly carried ammunition to Ankara over the Black Sea and the transfer route was described as the “road of independence.” The boat was found in the district of İnebolu in 1992, and in 2004, the museum purchased the boat from the district municipality. The museum’s ground floor is allocated to smalland large-scale art works associated with Turkish

naval history from rifles, uniforms, pieces of ships, travel journals, compasses, furniture, astrolabes and pieces of the harbor chain, which draws particular attention. The defensive chain was used to prevent Ottoman ships from entering the Golden Horn and forced Mehmed the Conqueror to order his forces to carry the ships over land. The museum’s lesser-known section is “Deniz Müzesi Komutanlığı Deniz Tarihi Arşivi” (The Navy History Archive of the Turkish Commandership of the Naval Museum). The archive is placed in a separate building a few hundred meters away from the museum. Expert Mehmet Korkmaz said the archive is a rich reference resource for those who want to explore the history of the Ottoman navy. The archive features 7,000 works including 21,000 books, 716 maps, 858 books of maps and 242 manuscripts along with over 10,000 photos depicting ships, harbors, schools, sailors, shipyards and sailing exercises. Korkmaz said the preliminary classification of a collection of one million documents belonged to the Ottoman navy has been completed and the documents will be transferred to a digital platform soon. The archive’s oldest document is an account notebook dated between 1670 and 1673. All documents including deck logs, personal information notebooks and registration files about majors, officials and sergeants and are open to researchers.

Meet at Memories

What is ANZAC Day?

Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold stroke to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stalemate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated, after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. What does ANZAC stand for? Over 8,000 Australian soldiers had been killed. News of ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. the landing on Gallipoli had made a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25 April soon became the day on The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as which Australians remembered the sac rifice of those who ANZACs, and the pride they took in that name endures to had died in the war. this day. ANZAC Day – 25 April – is probably Australia’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

Why is this day special to Australians?

26

When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a federal commonwealth for only 13 years. The new national government was eager to establish its reputation among the nations of the world. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany. The Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Ottoman

February’2015 MeeTurkey

Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the “ANZAC legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

Early commemorations

The 25th of April was officially named ANZAC Day in 1916. It was marked by a wide variety of ceremonies and services in Australia, a march through London, and a sports day in the Australian camp in Egypt. In London over 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. A

London newspaper headline dubbed them “the knights of Gallipoli”. Marches were held all over Australia; in the Sydney march, convoys of cars carried wounded soldiers from Gallipoli attended by nurses. For the remaining years of the war, ANZAC Day was used as an occasion for patriotic rallies and recruiting campaigns, and parades of serving members of the AIF were held in most cities. During the 1920s ANZAC Day became established as a national day of commemoration for the 60,000 Australians who had died during the war. In 1927, for the first time every state

observed some form of public holiday on ANZAC Day. By the mid-1930s, all the rituals we now associate with the day – dawn vigils, marches, memorial services, reunions, two-up games – were firmly established as part of ANZAC Day culture. With the coming of the Second World War, ANZAC Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war. In subsequent years the meaning of the day has been further broadened to include Australians killed in all the military operations in which Australia has been involved. ANZAC Day was first commemorated at the Memorial in 1942. There were government orders prohibiting large public gatherings in case of a Japanese air attack, so it was a small occasion, with neither a march nor a memorial service. Since then, ANZAC Day has been commemorated at the Memorial every year.

What does it mean today?

Australians recognise 25 April as an occasion of national remembrance, which takes two forms. Commemorative services are held at dawn – the time of the original landing – across the nation. Later in the day, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in marches through the major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal and are held at war memorials around the country. In these ways, ANZAC Day is a time when Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war.

Meet at Memories Mustafa Kemal and The Initiative

In his memoirs, Şefik Aker wrote that Mustafa Kemal had come to his aid without waiting for an order from his corps commander.2 Many other sources, including 5th Army Commander Liman von Sanders and Esat Pasha, confirm this. As for Fahrettin Altay, General Staff Officer of the 3rd Corps Commander Esat Pasha, his take on the story is slightly different: The 27th Regiment, which had moved towards Arıburnu at half past six, established contact with the adversary on Bloody Ridge at half past eight. During this time, Mustafa Kemal was complaining about not yet having received orders, fust as he was getting ready to move with the 57th Regiment and an additional battery and cavalry squadron, the order came from army corps headquarters to move immediately with all units towards Arıburnu and to push the adversary back to the sea... This is why he only established contact with the enemy at half past ten near Conkbayırı [Chunuk Bair], and attacked, pushing them back to the sea.3 As for Mustafa Kemal himself, as he was recounting what happened on that day during a conversation with wellknown Turkish journalist Ruşen Eşref Ünaydın some years after the battle, he stated that he had received a report from Halil Sami, commander of the 9th Division, saying there had been a landing at Arıburnu that morning at 06.30. Apparently he had been expecting the landing to happen there. Mustafa Kemal continued his statement as follows:

I stopped waiting for something to happen, and sent notice that the first infantry regiment at the village of Bigalı where I had my headquarters (...) and a mountain battery should be in readiness to go into action at any moment, and that their commanders should come to me to receive orders.4 So, we can conclude from a comparison of the various sources that, after having waited for orders for some time, Mustafa Kemal finally decided to move forward with the 57th Regiment before he had received such an order.

Qantas Supports Gallipoli Centenary

The Australian Government and Qantas collaborate to support ANZAC Centenary activities marking the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. The Government appreciates the generous contribution of Qantas in supporting this significant period of commemoration and ensuring that more Australians can travel to Turkey for the services.

28 13

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson said, “The Anzac Centenary is a milestone of special significance to all Australians as the First World War played such an important role in defining us as a nation and as a people”. Qantas has added a special flight for Australians travelling to Turkey for Anzac Day – the Boeing 747 seats 364 people and will depart Sydney for Istanbul on 21 April, via Perth. “This additional flight is a great initiative by Qantas, and will

February’2015 MeeTurkey

provide the opportunity for many Australians who received a ticket in the ballot to travel to this historic Anzac Day commemoration,” Senator Ronaldson said. Qantas has a strong connection to Gallipoli where two of its founders served, Sir William Hudson Fysh KBE DFC (1894 – 1974) and Paul McGinness DFC DCM (1896-1952).

open until 31 March 2015 to reallocate places that become available. Only those with a ballot attendance pass can attend the official Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli in 2015.

Qantas has agreed to provide return flights for the widows of Australian First World War veterans travelling to Turkey for Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli. The widows, aged in their seventies to early nineties, will attend the commemorations as official guests of the Australian Government and will travel as part of an official mission party. The widows will each be accompanied by a carer and support staff from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), including nurses and an Australian Defence Force doctor. Meet at Memories

The Bridge to Empathy and Peace

30 13

No one can understand the above mentioned values better than the Anzacs and the Turks as by now it must be part of our very own DNA. Imagine two warring sides, only eight meters apart inside their trenches; killing each other and sometimes in darkness killing their own soldiers because of chest to chest combat. However each day at cease fire offering each other chocolates and cigarettes for a period of nine and a half months; eventually becoming friends, after getting to know who the enemy was and not shooting at each other anymore was one of the major reasons why the battle of Gallipoli came to an end. A gentleman’s war as recorded by some historians where the number of casualties from both sides reached to six hundred thousand including the dead, wounded and those who were missing in action; all in a time frame when a child could be born. What a waste for the human kind! In Brad Pitts movie Troy the King of Thessaly says to King Agamemnon ‘’Remove your army off my land’’ and the response is ‘’but I like your land’’. In Ephesus under Trojans foot where once his seven meter tall statue stood; it writes: ‘’Here it is under my feet I conquered it all’’ referring to the world which is presently standing as the globe. Ephesus Trojan FountainTrajan’s people knew the world was round from Erostatanes and Marinos; two famous Greek scholars who had measured and had drawn maps of the world showing it as the globe we know it today. So how was it possible that the human kind lost that information for fifteen hundred years until Christopher Columbus discovered America and proved the rest of the world how correct those two scholars were. I often wonder who had pushed the delete button

February’2015 MeeTurkey

causing this valuable piece of information to be lost for one and a half millennium. Was it just by coincidence that one of the ships during the Gallipoli campaign that tried to go through Dardanelles was named Agamemnon, on the 18th of March 1915? We all need the correct information and the history by Aydın Eroğlu will keep repeating itself as long as we humans do not seem to learn from the mistakes of our grandparents. One may want to conquer the world and keep on liking those lands that belong to others and never take into consideration the feelings of those peoples whose lands are under occupation. When will this lack of empathy terminate? It is sad to see that sometimes the human effort that is shown to a whale is not shown to all the Syrians who are being massacred by their own tyrant right now. It seems to me that this lack of empathy will continue and the level of human tragedy will go beyond borders of our imagination. If the Anzacs and the Turks of today can embrace each other after hundred years and show great respect to each other for the heroic encounter of their grandparents and empaties knowing that their ancestors who killed each other today can bring them together in the hope that the future generations will pick up this lesson of history and continue their lives by building bridges of peace and empathy and make the world a better place to live and only then we can hope for a brighter future to come.

Newest Destination, Izmit ( Kocaeli )

Kocaeli is mostly known by its district center, Izmit. Izmit is the city that takes place on the highway and railroad connecting Istanbul to Anatolia. The ancient name of the city is Nikomedia. After being destroyed, it was rebuilt and founded by Nicomedes I of Bithynia in 264 BC under the name of Nicomedia, and has ever since been one of the most important cities in northwestern Asia Minor. Hannibal came to Nicomedia in his final years and committed suicide in nearby Libyssa (Gebze). Nicomedia was the metropolis of Bithynia under the Roman Empire and Diocletian made it the eastern capital city of the Roman Empire in 286 when he introduced the Tetrarchy system. Nicomedia remained as the eastern (and most senior) capital of the Roman Empire until Licinius was defeated by Constantine the Great in 324. Constantine mainly resided in Nicomedia as his interim capital city for the next six years, until in 330 he declared the nearby Byzantium as Nova Roma, which eventually became known as Constantinople (present-day Istanbul). Constantine died in a royal villa at the vicinity of Nicomedia in 337. Owing to its position at the convergence of the Asiatic roads leading to the new capital, Nicomedia

retained its importance even after the foundation of Constantinople. The city was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1338. Remains from Roman and Byzantine times may be seen here, among which are the citadel, the Temple of Augustus and the agora. The city of Izmit is mainly an industrial center with numerous industrial establishments surrounding the Gulf of Izmit. However, there are also many touristic sites in this bustling province. Kartepe is a winter-sports resort that reaches a height of 1600 m. Cebeci, Kerpe and Kefken on the Black Sea coast have fine beaches, while Golcuk, Degirmendere and Karamursel in the Gulf of Izmit, are other beautiful sea resorts. Near the Eskihisar village in the Gulf of Izmit, there is a yacht berth place with a capacity of 60-80 yachts. Lake Sapanca is another natural beauty, and a scenic place ideal for picnics. One of the towns of Kocaeli is Hereke, where the very best Turkish carpets are produced. The artistic carpets of Ottoman palaces were woven here. These carpets are priceless and well-known all over the world.

ANKARA

Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the

capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.
