Turkey Commemorates 100th Anniversary of Çanakkale Victory

Turkey commemorates the 100th anniversary of victory of the naval battle at Çanakkale, which was won when Ottoman artillery held off an invading force of Allied States in 1915. Heroism displayed by Turkish troops in defending their homeland stopped the advance, and the Battles ended in clear victory for the Ottoman State. The Battle of Çanakkale, which is also known as the Battle of Gallipoli, the Dardanelles Campaign or the Gallipoli Campaign, was fought on land and sea around the Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in Turkish) on the northern shore of the Dardanelles strait during World War I between March 18, 1915 and January 9, 1916. March 18 is also known as Martyrs’ Day, in which the martyrs of the battle are commemorated every year across Turkey. The Turkish nation went through an epic struggle during the battle, as people of various ethnicities fought together to win the war. The British and French were trying to take control of İstanbul and the Turkish straits in order

to secure access to Russia. Russia’s allies Britain and France launched a naval attack followed by an amphibious landing on the peninsula with the eventual aim of capturing the Ottoman capital. However, the Allied forces were unsuccessful in their efforts. The campaign ended after eight months of fighting, with heavy casualties on both sides, leaving veterans with many stories to tell their descendants. Atatürk rose as an important leader in the legendary 57th infantry regiment of the Ottoman army, which was fighting the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) of the Allied forces. In a speech in April 1915, Atatürk reportedly told his soldiers in the 57th regiment: “I do not order you to fight, I order you to die. In the time which passes until we die, other troops and commanders can come forward and take our places.” Almost no soldiers from the 57th regiment survived the war. Atatürk himself was hit by a piece of shrapnel but was saved by the pocket watch he kept in his breast pocket. Today, the site where he was hit is marked by his statue, and the area where the battle was fought is a pilgrimage destination for many Turks. Almost every day of the year, the memorial for the martyrs of the war receives thousands of visitors who come to pray for their deceased ancestors. The 100th anniversary of Çanakkale Naval Battles celebrated across the country with ceremonies, and martyrs were commemorated with gratitude. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and several ministers attended the ceremonies in Çanakkale. A gold medal, bearing the inscription ‘Çanakkale is Impassable’, attached to a Turkish flag, which symbolizes 235 thousand lives who died saving the country. Ceremonies continuedat the Martyrs’ Memorial located in the Gallipoli Peninsula. The cemetery visited after a parade of battleships and a show of fighter jets.

The latest exhibition at Istanbul Modern’s Photography Gallery, “Magnum – Contact Sheets” explores the creation processes of photographs from Magnum Photos, one of the world’s most prestigious photography agencies. It is the second exhibition of Magnum Photos at Istanbul Modern; “Turkey by Magnum”, was hosted by Istanbul Modern February 17 and May 20, 2007, brought together Magnum Photos photographs on Turkey for the very first time. Sponsored by BASF Turk as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations, the exhibition includes 133 works by 58 artists. Organized in cooperation with Magnum Photos, Forte di Bard and Thames & Hudson, “Magnum – Contact Sheets” focuses on the analogue age of photography with works comprising the visual history of more than eighty years. With the development of digital technologies and their huge impact on photographic production, this exploration of photography’s analogue age sets out to both investigate and celebrate a technique that is becoming increasingly historical; to provide an “epitaph”, in the words of Martin Parr. In the exhibition, contact sheets and photographs are accompanied by close-up details, articles, books and magazine spreads. Oya Eczacıbaşı, Chair of the Board of Istanbul Modern,

explained that the exhibition “Magnum – Contact Sheets” encompassed visuals documenting cultural, political and social history from across the world by Magnum photographers from the 1930s to the present-day. “Those Magnum members whose works are displayed in the exhibition convey the stories of their photographic processes, how they reach the ‘decisive moment’ after films are developed, and how they carefully select the final images from several contact sheets. By seeing the contact sheets, which are in a sense the ‘logbooks’ of the photographer, the viewer witnesses how these unforgettable photographs created the visual history of an 80-year epoch.” Oya Eczacıbaşı added that the exhibition served as an homage to the analogue age, a method of photography now lost to the development of digital technology, and provided an opportunity to see the unique photographs taken by those who experienced serendipity during photographic processes: “who were at the right place at the right time” and who captured the zeitgeist.

Chateau Nuzun is a butique winery an hour west of Istanbul. The winery is located in the middle of Cesmeli Vineyards which is about 14.5 hectar estate of which half is currently producing wine grapes. Chateau Nuzun is established by Nazan and Necdet in 2004. The vineyard is planted near the town of Tekirdağ, Marmara Ereğlisi, in a small village called Çeşmeli (water fountains). 7 hectars of vine-grapes are planted in 2005 and 2006. In 2010, the organic growers certifate is awarded to Chateau Nuzun. They believe that good wines can only be made from excellent grapes. Hence, they concentrate on good viticulture practices. All the wineries in Hoşköy are located on the sea side. Since the main form of transport in this area used to be by sea, the wines would be put in large barrels and on the beach, lifted a board ships which would then take them to the Wine makers’ Dock at Karaköy in Istanbul to be distributed to various cities and countries. Melen Winery is also located on the sea side. The production continues where our grandfather Ahmet Çetintaş began his wine making adventure in the 1920s. French oak barrels, modern equipment and chrome tanks have now replaced the concrete storage, but the stone walls and roofing have been kept to retain the building’s architectural integrity. Melen’s work with its vine yards is like the work of the ancient potters who transformed worthless pieces of clay into works of art, and now not just the vineyards, but Melen too, is slowly bringing the ruined Monastery back to life. The vine yard is on the breezy side of the hill facing the sea and protected from the north by the Ganohora Mountains at a height of 945 metres. The vine yard, at 200 metres, slopes. The Ladies European Tour at Belek The Ladies European Tour (LET) will once again visit the Mediterranean resort of Belek, one of Europe’s top golf destinations, when Carya Golf Club hosts the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open May 17-20. This year, the seventh edition of the LET’s Turkish competition saw a venue change; it will be held at Carya Golf Club instead of its traditional home of the National Golf Club. The event’s prize has doubled from the previous tournaments to 500,000 euros, making it one of the top prize events of the 2015 LET and increasing interest in the tournament. So far, 173 golfers have applied to compete for the title’s 80,000 euro prize money. The 126 names expected to compete at Carya include Laura Davies of England, a previous world number one and the winner of more than 80 professional tournaments, her fellow countryman Trish Johnson, last year’s champion, Valentine Derrey of France and English Melissa Reid, winner of the 2010 tournament. Three Turkish amateurs will also be able to compete in the event, thanks to wildcards granted by the organizers. Two of the players will be chosen by the Turkish Golf Federation (TGF), while the third choice will come from the National Golf Academy, which aims to give local children of the Belek region a chance to become golfers. This year’s tournament will be jointly promoted by Mineks International and Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort. Speaking to a group of journalists invited to Belek over the weekend, Regnum Carya Golf & Spa Resort Chairman Fikret Öztürk stated his pleasure in hosting the 2015 Turkish Ladies

Open. “The tournament raises awareness about our country in the international arena. It will also help introduce the Belek region worldwide and its high quality golf courses,” he said. Öztürk said Belek’s recognition as an exclusive golf destination should increase, in addition to his desire for an assessment of broad areas in Antalya in order to build more golf courses. “Golf encourages tourists with high incomes to travel to Turkey,” Öztürk said, calling on Turkish Airlines to increase the number of direct flights to Turkey from destinations in Europe, especially during the winter months. Also new to this year, the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open will tee off on a Sunday and end on a Wednesday. “The tournament will finish on a Wednesday, instead of the traditional Sunday, because we are competing with so many other major sporting events for TV coverage,” Bülent Göktuna, chairman of Mineks International and the president of National Golf Club said in a statement. “This will give us a massive increase in television exposure worldwide, with live coverage on Sky Sports and the Golf Channel. The event will be broadcast to more than 50 countries.” The Carya Golf Club, opened in 2010, is a classic heath land design with similar features to the best British inland courses. It hosted the European Challenge Tour in 2012.

Rakoczi Museum 13 40

Ferenc Rakoczi was a people’s hero of Hungarian liberty who lived in this house from 1720 to 1735 which was restored and turned into a museum by the Hungarian government. Memorablia of Rakoczi is displayed on the third floor of the house which is a typical example of Ottoman civil architecture. At the 2nd museum is a statue of Rokoczi along with oil paintings and various works, objects and documents attributed to his life. The second floor holds oil paintings of other participants in the Hungarian war of independence. Rakoczi’s Story: After the second Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1689, Hungary was occupied by the Austrian Habsburgs. The Hungarians rose in rebellion against the occupation

in 1703. Ferenc Rakoczi started the war of Independence in 1703 as an Imperial Prince of Transylvania and of the Confederated States for Liberty of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1705. Even after getting the pledged support of Russia, Poland and France, Hungary lost its bid for independence when its weakened army lost at the Battle of Trencin in 1708. After this war, Rakoczi went into exile living in Poland, England and France between 1711 and 1717. The Ottoman Empire commited it support and aid to Rakoczi and in 1717 sent a ship to recieve him in Turkey. The Passarowitz Treaty was eventually signed in 1718 between the Ottoman Empire and

Austria, and assured safe passage of refugees defecting to the Ottoman Empire. They first came to Edirne, Istanbul and were eventually settled in Tekirdağ. When Rakoczi died in 1735 in Tekirdağ, his body was laid to rest in the Saint Benoit High School Chapel in Istanbul and was eventually moved to the Cathedral in Kassa in Hungary by Hungarian officials in 1906. It was after Rokoczi’s death that Hungary decided to build a museum in his honor and took many of his personal effects along with his ashes back to Turkey.

However, the idea to make a museum in Hungary was never realized due to the first and second World Wars. The house was restored and renovated in 1932 by a Hungarian architect commissioned by the Hungarian government. The house was renovated again in 1981 and interior parts of the house were disassembled and taken to Hungary to be restored and rebuilt with ornamentations and paintings based on its original state.

ANKARA

Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the

capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.
