G20 Meeting in Turkey
6
Turkey’s Mediterranean city of Antalya hosts a meeting of the G20 Tourism Ministers and main focus is on promoting more and better jobs. In line with the overall priorities of Turkish G20 Presidency – Inclusiveness, Investment for growth and Implementation – the meeting focused on how tourism can create more and better jobs as a means to reduce inequalities at national and international level. Recalling that tourism is one of the most dynamic and resilient economic sectors, Ministers of Tourism committed to maximize the potential the sector has to generate jobs, particularly for women and youth. Travel & Tourism is a major global employer. The sector is forecasted to support over 280 million jobs worldwide during 2015, or one in eleven jobs on the planet. Over the next ten years, the sector is estimated to generate 25 million new jobs directly and support indirectly the creation of 80 million new jobs around the world. And most importantly, Travel and Tourism supports jobs across all levels of society. It employs a higher percentage of women and young people than the whole of the economy and provides employment in rural and remote areas across the globe where job opportunities would otherwise be lacking. “Tourism has a major role to play in economic growth and cultural understanding” said the Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism, Yalçın Topçu, recalling the objectives of the Turkish Presidency of the G20 and the important role that tourism plays in the socio-economic development of Turkey. “Today, though our economies have improved considerably, growth is still subdued and unemployment remains one of our most pressing challenges, particularly when it comes to the youth. Tourism can promote more and better jobs, create opportunities for women and youth, stimulate entrepreneurship and the inclusion of SMEs into the tourism value chains” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai in his opening remarks to the Meeting. The Deputy Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Greg Vines, stressed that tourism “has the potential to further contribute to economic growth and job creation especially in less advanced regions” a factor that “gives tourism a key role in meeting the global challenges set by the 2030 agenda for sustainable development”. David Scowsill, President & CEO of the World Travel &
November’2015 MeeTurkey
Tourism Council, speaking on behalf of the Global Travel Association Coalition (GTAC), said, “Our sector creates jobs at different skills levels and in areas where other employment opportunities are scarce. This is why ‘Investment in People’ is one of the four key pillars of GTAC’s Agenda for Growth and Development. Travel and Tourism has a tremendous positive impact on people’s livelihoods, which enhances the community health, wealth and pride. With the extraordinary growth of our sector forecast for the next decade, we can contribute to promote more inclusive growth.” G20 Tourism Ministers recalled that tourism accounts for almost 10% of the world’s GDP, 6% of global trade, one in eleven jobs in the world. Data from ILO shows that ‘accommodation and restaurants’, together with other ‘private sector services’ are expected to create jobs at the fastest rate of any sector in the economy for the next five years. Ministers agreed on several actions, including: – To promote jobs for women and youth, stressing policies that address women’s empowerment; – To advance the decent work agenda including the issues of wage setting, social dialogue and social protection; – To create stronger links between the private sector, the public sector and education and training institutions to close the gap between the needs of the market and education programmes; – To enable cooperation between developing countries and G20 countries to promote inclusive economic opportunities and job creation, with a particular focus on women’s education; –To promote the integration of SMEs into the global economy; –To promote the value of employment in tourism to reflect more accurately the opportunities and benefits of tourism jobs and to attract and retain talent in the sector; and –To accelerate their efforts in the measurement of tourism employment in the framework of the UN adopted Tourism Satellite Accounts and the International Recommendations on Tourism Statistics.

Hotel Development in Turkey Reaches All-Time High Turkey is experiencing a boom in its hospitality sector with 75 new projects and 12,968 rooms currently in the pipeline, an all-time high for this European country. Having emerged from 2014 as the world’s sixth most visited tourist destination, Turkey has seen a massive growth in hotel construction, according to a recent report by leading market research company, Tophotel Projects. As a result, recreational complexes and hotels with meeting and spa facilities are now particularly prominent in the Turkish market. While notably ubiquitous in Istanbul, which boasts more than 800 properties and 50,000 rooms, the rapid growth in hotel development can be seen also in cities such as Bodrum, Cesme and Izmir.
With this new development comes a range of options for prospective visitors. No longer does the inclusion of a traditional Turkish Hammam or premium spa distinguish one property from another. Such amenities are now de rigueur, forcing competing hotels to differentiate themselves by other means. Leading developers Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Hilton Worldwide, Carlson Rezidor and Roanta, among others, are attempting to do just that. Incorporating everything from five-star restaurants and private yacht excursions to sprawling ballrooms and Titanic-themed resorts, Turkey’s newest tourism infrastructure promises an eclectic spectrum of experiences for visitors.
Financial Support to Travel Agencies and Airports

Turkey’s tourism sector has this year suffered a sharp drop in visitor numbers amid Russia’s economic woes. In response Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry has announced a new support program to overcome sector losses. The ministry will offer financial support to A Group certificate travel agencies carrying tourists from 13 countries, such as Russia, Iran and Ukraine, through charter airlines. The agencies will take $6,000 grants for each flight, said the ministry in a statement issued

to travel agencies. The support package covers 13 countries in total; Azerbaijan, Moldova, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Iran. The ministry also said several airports will be under the support package’s coverage, including airports in Gazipaşa-Alanya, Antalya, Dalaman, Bodrum and İzmir. Travel agencies need to submit their proposals and the required documents to become qualified for the support, which lasts until November 30.

Global Yatırım Holding said its port operator, Global Ports Holding, has signed a binding deal to acquire a 30.79 percent stake in Valetta Cruise Port Plc (VCP), which has operational rights of the Malta cruise port and its retail areas, in a written statement. The completion of the stakes transfer will depend on the finalization of required legal and administrative permissions as well as future decisions by other partners of VCP about buying any more stakes. VCP won the operational rights of the Valetta Cruise Port in Malta, along with its accompanying buildings and lands measuring over 48,000 square meters, in an international tender in 2002 for the next 65 years, according to the statement. The company has also undertaken retail sales through Travel Shopping Ltd, with some 90 percent of stakes owned by it. VCP, which plans to offer services to 650,000 cruise

Artists in Their Time
Istanbul Modern’s new collection exhibition “Artists in Their Time” focuses on how artists position their work and themselves as individuals within the concept of time. 193 works by 109 artists are featured in Istanbul Modern’s new collection exhibition. “Artists in Their Time” takes as its starting point the words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar (1901-1962), one of Turkey’s foremost intellectual and literary figures: “I am neither within time nor completely outside of it.” Inspired by Tanpınar’s interpretation of time, the exhibition reveals how artists from different geographies come to terms with the past, present, and future. Curated by Istanbul Modern Director Levent Çalıkoğlu with the assistance of Artistic ProgrammerBirnur Temel, the exhibition offers a roadmap for understanding the intertemporal and existential journey of artists through the notion of time that informs the core of Tanpınar’s work. In an age in which a variety of times are perceived simultaneously, the exhibition reminds us of the comprehensive breadth of Tanpınar’s views. Featuring 193 works by 109 artists, the exhibition brings together different periods around certain themes and proposes a conceptual ground pertaining to the connection and reckoning between an artist’s time and societal, cultural, natural, and universal notions of time. The exhibition highlights how artists experience their own times, the anxiety and frustration they feel in the face of time that emerges from the past and flows into the future, and the depth of closeness they form between their own internal time and that of others. It also presents a base for discussing the place of an artwork in the face of transience and change, and its transformation. Which times does an artwork pass through to become a part of the present, of the moment we are now observing? What is the meaning of the temporal relationships it establishes with other artworks? What conditions do artworks resist, or what conditions are they absorbed into, in order to last in the future? “Artists in Their Time” brings together works with shared emotionsabout suchthemes as the responses of abstract art from different periods; the role of materials and studios in the artistic production; the evolution from the tradition of landscapes and still lifes to the perception of nature in contemporary art; seeking identity; attraction to the sublime and the spiritual; existential issues; body politics; feminist attitudes; the complex problems
imposed by the new urban culture; the struggle against war, death and destruction; life stories from Istanbul, a metropolis defined by water and embracing the sea; and efforts to understand the people of Anatolia. The collection catalogue for “Artists in Their Time” presents new articles by two guest authors, Ahu Antmen, art historian and critic, and Handan İnci, literary historian and expert on Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. Through the context of time, Antmen focuses on modernization in Turkey, and interaction between generations and their coming to terms with one another. İnci, on the other hand, presents a biographical account of Tanpınar with references to the notion of time as reflected in the author’s work. Exclusively for this exhibition,13 artists have been invited to write texts about an artist with whom they feel an affinity. Installed next to specific works in the exhibition space, these texts draw attention to artists, who have maintained their connection with previous periods in terms of their thoughts and expression. This emphasis is also achieved in part through the scenography of the exhibition that brings together modern and contemporary artists. In line with the expanding collection through new acquisitions, “Artists in Their Time”brings together artists from distinct geographies. Having boosted the presence of international artists in its collection, Istanbul Modern is exhibiting for the first time works by Doug Aitken, Allora ve Calzadilla, Georg Baselitz, Liam Gillick, Elliott Hundley, Anselm Kiefer, Hermann Nitsch and Matt Saunders. The exhibition features 32 new acquisitions of local artists, including works by Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin, Vahap Avşar, Ardan Özmenoğlu, andMurat Pulat, which are shown for the first time in the new collection exhibition. The exhibition also features ten works by Kutluğ Ataman, Fikret Atay, Hüseyin Çağlayan, Ergin Çavuşoğlu, Cevdet Erek, Ferhat Özgür, Vahit Tuna and Burcu Yağcıoğlu, all of which have been shown in temporary exhibitions of the museum before they entered the museum collection. In addition to exhibiting the works of 18 artists for the first time, the collection exhibition features photographs by Aziz Albek, Ali Alışır, Coşkun Aral, Barbara and Zafer Baran, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Manuel Çıtak, Murat Germen, Şahin Kaygun, Yıldız Moran, Gökşin Sipahioğlu, Atilla Torunoğlu, and Cafer Türkmen, from Istanbul Modern’s Photography Collection.

Istanbul and Antalya Listed in Top 10 Muslim Shopping Travel Index
16
stanbul and Antalya have featured in a list of the world’s top shopping destinations for Muslim tourists in a report which provides detailed insights into their spending behavior while travelling. The research showed that shopping expenditure by Muslims in 2014 amounted to $36 billion, while dining expenditure amounted to $26 billion. The MasterCard-CrescentRating Muslim Shopping Travel Index 2015 (MTSI 2015) has revealed Muslim travelers spent a total of $62 billion globally in shopping and dining. Istanbul was fifth on the overall list of 40 cities in the MTSI 2015 while Antalya came sixth which was topped by Dubai in the number one spot. The MTSI 2015 looks at in-depth data covering Muslim travel shopping from 40 international cities creating an overall index, based on a number of criteria. It is the first time detailed insights have been provided on the consumer spending behaviour of Muslim travellers. The MTSI 2015 is the latest research collaboration between MasterCard and CrescentRating on this sector following the launch of the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2015 earlier this year. “The MasterCard-CrescentRating Muslim Travel Shopping Index is a fascinating insight into the shopping habits of Muslim consumers and will prove to be an invaluable tool to the entire sector,” said Fazal Bahardeen, CEO of CrescentRating & HalalTrip. “The research looks at two of the most important expenditure components of Muslim travellers which are shopping and dining. The Index reveals how important Turkey is to the sector and the vital contribution they are making including cities like Istanbul and Antalya. “The MTSI 2015 is a perfect complement to the GMTI2015 which we launched earlier this year and allows us to provide a complete picture of how Muslims spend their money when travelling.” “The MTSI 2015 provides a deeper look at two key components of the traveler consumer experience – shopping and dining. We see this as an important resource not only for us to better understand this significant and fast-growing traveler segment, but also a source of data that will inform and support the efforts of our partners in the travel industry,” said Matthew Driver, Group Executive, Global Products and Solutions, Asia Pacific, MasterCard. The 40 international cities covered in the MTSI 2015 were scored against a comprehensive set of metrics which included suitability as a shopping destination, Muslim friendly services and facilities and ease of travel. Each criterion was then weighted to make up the overall index score. Dubai topped the ranking for overall Muslim Travel Shopping with a score of 79.5 followed by Kuala Lumpur with a score of 73.3. Singapore scored 71.6 on the Index making it the number one ranked city from the non-OIC countries and third in the overall list. London was number four on the overall list with an Index of 64.7 while Istanbul came fifth with a scoring of 64.2

and Antalya in sixth with a score of 61.2. A significant highlight of the MTSI 2015 was the high number of non-OIC countries featuring in the top 40 list. Singapore, secured a rank among the top five overall destinations for Muslim traveller shopping while London also scored very highly. This further revealed the potential for non-OIC destinations, with 25 on the list, to attract Muslim travellers by proactively catering to this segment. MTSI 2015 will be updated on an annual basis and will feature more cities in future releases. Earlier this year, the GMTI 2015 showed that in 2014, the Muslim travel segment was worth $145 billion with 108 million Muslim travellers representing 10% of the entire travel economy. This is forecasted to grow to 150 million visitors by 2020 and 11% of the market segment with a market value projected to grow to $200 billion. The top 10 OIC destinations in the MTSI 2015 are: Rank

Turkish Airlines Sponsors European Rugby Champions Cup and Challenge Cup
Turkish Airlines continues its support to sports by becoming the official partner of the European Rugby Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. Turkish Airlines currently sponsors the Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund, and has been the title sponsor of basketball’s Turkish Airlines Euroleague since 2010. Last year, the airline became the main sponsor of Japan’s national basketball league, the Turkish Airlines BJ-league, and it is also the title sponsor of the Turkish Airlines Open on golf’s European Tour. The announcement was made today during Tournament Launch for the 2015/16 season at the Twickenham Stoop which was attended by key rugby and business media as well as high-profile representatives of clubs competing in the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. The agreement will run for three years until the end of the 2017/18 season.
Chairman of the European Professional Club Rugby(EPCR), organizer of the tournament, Simon Halliday said: “The fact that we are joining forces with a truly global brand is great news for European club rugby. We believe that the newlook Champions Cup and Challenge Cup made great strides in the inaugural season, and now to have an ambitious, dynamic partner on board such as Turkish Airlines is a major boost for the tournaments. “While this is the company’s first rugby sponsorship, Turkish Airlines has been associated with top-class sport for many years and we are certain that they will be a factor in broadening the base of club rugby in Europe and bringing the game to new, enthusiastic fans.” M. Ilker Ayci, Chairman of Turkish Airlines said: “We are delighted to announce our long-term sponsorship with the European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. This partnership reinforces Turkish Airlines’ position as the ‘Europe’s Best Airline’ and demonstrates our continued commitment to sport in the UK and across the whole world.” The 2015/16 European club rugby season kicks off on Thursday, 12 November with the Challenge Cup meeting of Harlequins and Montpellier at the Twickenham Stoop. The Champions Cup gets underway the following evening – Friday, 13 November – when Leicester Tigers and Top 14 winners, Stade Francais Paris, clash at Welford Road. EPCR’s 2016 finals will be staged at the Grand Stade de Lyon on the 13 and 14 May.
Istanbul Among Top 10 Emerging World Cities
Istanbul has carved a place among the world’s top 10 emerging urban centers with rapid economic growth and real estate development, according to Jones Lang LaSalle’s (JLL) “Globalization and Competition: A New World of Cities” report. The report examines leading emerging world cities against their established counterparts in the developed world while comparing the characteristics and potential of each emerging world city across a number of indices, including real estate, capacity to attract talent and international firms as well as their ability to serve as hubs to direct trade and investment to a wider region. The report listed Istanbul’s strongpoints as trade, tourism and transportation and cited the city’s innovation center status and ability turn this capacity into advantage. Istanbul is on par with Shanghai and Beijing in the “Emerging World Cities” category, with its real-estate potential and long-term growth prospects. Istanbul is also a contender with Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Mexico City in the “Globally Competitive Megacities” subcategory.
The report goes on to praise Istanbul’s rise to prominence as an international finance center. Turkey’s cultural and financial capital also scored high in JLL’s “Business of Cities 2015”, published last May, claiming a spot at the top of the five fastest-improving cities.

Meet & Music
“Waltzes with Sultans” in London European music at the Ottoman Court is to resound at London’s Cadogan Hall with a themed concert setting to disclose hidden musical gems from the inner sanctuaries of the Seraglio. Introduced and conducted by the Turkish music historian Dr. Emre Aracı whom specialises in the European musical tradition in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, the concert, “Waltzes with Sultans”, will feature waltzes, polkas and marches composed by members of the Ottoman Imperial family, as well as their masters of music including the two famous Italian pashas, Giuseppe Donizetti and Callisto Guatelli. The concert will take place on Friday, 27th November 2015 at 7.30pm at Cadogan Hall. Doors will open at 7.00pm. In this highly original and unusual music event, music historian Dr. Emre Aracı joins the Chamber Ensemble of London, lead by Peter Fisher, to introduce and conduct his original string arrangements, selected from this lost world of musical ephemera, to create in the words of The Gramophone “an unexpectedly attractive collection”. In so doing, this unique event brings back the glories of a vanished and elegant past, which once flourished along the banks of the Bosphorus in the nineteenth century. Through Aracı’s orchestrations, royal compositions by members of the imperial family and Donizetti Pasha’s distinctive works have found a new lease of life and now take the audience to the unknown territory of forgotten compositions from the Ottoman Empire. While explaining the history of every individual work, Aracı also shows the levels of musical interchange that existed between East and West in an age which is now totally confined to the dusty shelves of archives.
The attaché of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, Ali Selçuk Can said that; “With this historic event, we are hoping that the British public will discover the similarities of Turkish music and culture to that of Europe.” The concert is co-organized by Yunus Emre Institute London and Turkish Culture & Information Office in London. As Talat Sait Halman once said; “Dr. Aracı mediates between Ottoman and European, Turkish and British, Eastern and Western”. In that sense his last name is symbolically significant as well: Aracı means mediator or intermediary.” said Mehmet Sen, the director of Yunus Emre Institute London.

Bursa, the only province in Turkey that is a member of the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA), will host the general assembly of the association between October 19 and 21. The three-day meeting will welcome the representatives of 36 cities from 13 countries. The main theme of the assembly, which happens every year in a member city with a historical thermal identity, will be: “Discovering the European Route of Thermal Heritage and Bursa: The City on the Silk Road.” Speaking to the press, Bursa Governor Münir Karaloğlu said Bursa is a unique city with its history, culture and natural beauty. He also highlighted that the city dazzles people with its thermal water as well as thousands of years of public baths and hot springs. Commenting on the importance of hosting EHTTA’s general assembly in Bursa, Karaloğlu said the meeting will reinforce Bursa’s identity as a thermal city. Stressing that Bursa is the first and only city from Turkey to be chosen as a member of EHTTA, Karaloğlu said Bursa was welcomed into the association in March 2013 and became a member and policymaker of the association’s board in 2015. “Bursa is home to numerous hot springs and public baths inherited

from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. With its modern thermal facilities, along with its 6,000 bed capacity, Bursa earns the title of being a thermal city, said Karaloğlu. He said that Turkey has been making a move in health tourism in the last couple of years and Bursa has made a breakthrough for being a health center of Europe. Karaloğlu said: “Our main goal is to introduce Bursa’s thermal heritage to all of humanity. We aim to open the hot springs of Bursa, which offered remedies to emperors, sultans and queens throughout history, for the use of all people in the world. We will continue to work harder and harder to protect Bursa’s thermal heritage and share it with all people.” Ahmet Hikmet Şahin, the deputy governor of Bursa, said the EHTTA General Assembly is an international organization and Bursa represents Turkey at the event, adding that they have been preparing for it for a year to make it perfect. He said that all the preparations are complete and the program of the general assembly will include panel sessions, exhibitions and various other events. The gala will take place at Bursa Merinos Atatürk Congress and Cultural Center on Oct. 19 and the meeting will be overseen by Health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, Karaloğlu, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Recep Altepe and representatives of health tourism and tourism professionals.

ANKARA
Ankara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great), and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the
capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.
