THE MAP of PIRI REIS 500 years ago the World Map of Piri Reis was the first of its kind to pave the way for further world maps. In 1999 November, we had the Map of Piri Reis as our cover story and now in 2013 November, it is the 500 years anniversary of this unique map and the whole story of Piri Reis and THE MAP is being displayed at an exhibition at the newly renewed NAVAL MUSEUM at Besiktas. This year it is, once more, within the coverage of MeeTurkey and it represents a big jump over 12 years from difficult times in tourism to success. In 1999, the editorial heading was “Apiko Salpa” an old nautical term that meant sails unfurled and ready to put out to sea. We had rough winds in Turkey at that time that had affected tourism badly and our Tourism Boat was severely damaged. We had forseen in our editorial that with a good “team work” our tourism boat could sail to success and Turkey could take its place among the chosen world destinations. Turkey has a lot of positive energy with very rich archeological, historical, cultural, natural, tasteful, exciting experiences to indulge our visitors. Our Culture and Tourism Ministry, with a “good team and team work” was successful in achieving this result. Turkish art, cultural activities, food and fashion are taking their place amongst the trendsetters of the world. Contemporary Art:Istanbul in November will give a new face-lift to the city with its

Turkey Top Destination for Tourists in Europe At a time of global economic crisis, tourists preferred Turkey over Europe to spend their holidays, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) figures have revealed. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Özgür Özaslan said that while the increase in the number of tourists hovered around 4 percent in Europe, the same figure stood at around 8 percent for Turkey. The growth in the tourism sector was expected to be around 4 percent on a global scale, he said, adding that expectations had been realized. Stating that for developed countries the increase was 3.3 percent, for developing countries it was 4.6 percent and for Europe it was 5 percent. “The growth rate for Turkey stood at 8.6 percent for the last 8 months. That means the growth is double that of Europe and 2.5 times more than the global figures,” Özaslan said. He also noted that the World Tourism Organization estimated growth for the 2010-2020 period to be 2.7 percent, and 1.8 percent for 20202030 period, but the growth would exceed that of Europe.
Istanbul to Host 2017 World Petroleum Congress
Every three years, representatives from more than sixty countries gather for the World Petroleum Congress. The triennial World Petroleum Congress is widely known as the “Olympics” of the petroleum industry and covers all aspects of the industry from technological advances in upstream and downstream operations to the role of natural gas and renewables, management of the industry and its social, economic and environmental impact. In addition, outside stakeholders such as governments, other industry sectors, NGOs and international institutions have also joined in the dialogue. Turkey won its bid to host the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in 2017 in Istanbul, beating powerful opponent Houston in the final vote. Istanbul competed with Astana of Kazakhstan, Houston and Copenhagen during the World Petroleum Forum in Calgary, Canada. Members from 52 countries eliminated Copenhagen in the first round. Second round of voting ended the hope for Astana and Istanbul and Houston made it to the final. Istanbul bid for the World Petroleum Congress three times previously without success. This time, however, Istanbul received the 55 percent of the votes to win its bid to host the prestigious 22nd of the World Petroleum Congress. The next congress will take place in 2014 in Moscow. The event is expected to draw some 10,000 high-level executives and government officials from energy-producing countries.

Turkey, Greece must Boost Med tourism
Turkey’s European Union Minister Egemen Bağış has urged that Turkey and Greece should enhance their relations particularly for cooperation on eastern Mediterranean tourism, during the Mediterranean Luxury Travel Summit 2013 in Athens. Bağış said the global tourism income surpassed $1 trillion last year, a 4 percent increase from the previous year, at the summit
on Oct. 7. “We should ask this question: How can we raise the share of the eastern Mediterranean region of this $1 trillion cake?” he asked. Turkey wants to make its relations with Greece reach the highest level and believes that a profitable cooperation will found the basis of an eastern Mediterranean region with abundance and success. The minister recalled that Turkey raised its trade with Greece by 100 percent in the last 10 years, but a bilateral trade volume of around 4 billion euros wasn’t enough. “Greek Prime Minister Samaras visited Turkey a couple of months ago in order to negotiate a memorandum of understanding for a Turkey-Greece High Level Cooperation Agreement. If we all want to advance our cooperation, these steps should be taken,” he said. The two countries have potential in many fields like energy, security and economic dynamism. Bağış said Turkey was the sixth most visited country in the world. The number of tourists rose from 13 million in 2002 to 30 million last year, he said, adding that they aimed to raise it to 50 million. They expected Turkey to host more than 37 million tourists by the end of this year. The value of exchange spent by tourists reached 16.5 billion, he added. Their 2023 target for tourism was to place Turkey within the top-five list, he said.

BIOGRAPHY and WORKS
P
îrî Muhyiddîn b. Hacı Mehmed by birth, renowned Ottoman cartographer and seaman. Niece of the famous Ottoman sailor Gâzî Kemâl Reis of Gallipoli (d. 1510), he was born most probably in Gallipoli. Prior to entering the Ottoman service in 1495 in response to a call by the Ottoman sultan Bâyezid II (1481–1512), Pîrî Reis lived and served under the guidance of his uncle. He aided his uncle in his attempts to safeguard the Muslim entity in Andalusia and took part in naval expeditions carrying dislocated people in southern Andalusia that had been expelled by a royal decree. During the Ottoman-Venetian naval war of 1498–1502, he was a galley commander in the Ottoman fleet headed by Kemâl Reis. He served in the successful Ottoman siege of Lepanto (1499), as well as in the Ottoman fleet that occupied Modon (Methoni), Coron

(Koroni) and Navarino (Pylos) in 1500. Next year, he attended at the re-conquest of Navarino. He once again participated in the naval campaigns launched by his uncle, Kemâl Reis, on Rhodes and Tripoli in 1504 and 1505 respectively. The demise of Kemâl Reis in 1510 marked a fundamental change in Pîrî Reis’ life. He joined the Egyptian campaign led by Selim I (1512–1520) and submitted his globally appreciated world map to the Ottoman ruler in 1517 during his stay in Cairo. In 1524 he guided the Ottoman fleet through the Mediterranean to the Egyptian coast to ensure a safe landing for the Ottoman grand vizier İbrahim Pasha of Parga. In 1537, when the Ottoman fleet gathered for a siege on Corfu under the command of Gâzî Hayreddin Pasha, he was among the Ottoman captains who had been granted a robe of honor (hil‘at).

In 1547 Pîrî Reis became the admiral of the so-called Ottoman Indian fleet in the Red Sea. Two years later, he led a naval campaign which resulted in the reoccupation of the city of Aden in Yemen by Ottoman forces. In 1552, he set sail from Suez at the head of thirty vessels for the island of Hormuz under Portuguese control. After a six-day siege the fortress of Muscat in Oman surrendered to Ottoman forces. On the other hand, despite heavy gunfire and successive assaults, Ottomans failed to conquer the inner fortress of Hormuz. Pîrî Reis grew concerned about the possibility of a superior Portuguese power approaching the fortress with relief troops that would eventually render the safe return of the Ottoman fleet impossible. He lifted the siege on Hormuz; reached Suez in command of only two ships and continued
his journey to Cairo on land. Deemed to be a defeated military leader who abandoned his routed troops on the battlefield, he was imprisoned in the citadel under the accusation of lifting the siege on Hormuz without imperial assent, of receiving a bribe from Portuguese agents and of leaving the military forces under his command unattended. Following the arrival of an imperial order, he was beheaded in the provincial council in Egypt (1554). His son Mehmed was appointed as a sea captain in the Ottoman navy in 1557. Pîrî Reis and the World Map of 1513 The surviving part of Pîrî Reis’ global map is preserved in the Library of Topkapı Palace Museum, Revan Köşkü Collection. The portolan chart has been acclaimed to be a masterpiece in cartography history soon after it had been discovered in 1929 and gained a world-wide reputation since then. It is drawn on skin parchment with a length of 87 cm and a width of 63 cm at the top and 41 cm at the bottom. Pîrî Reîs’ world map is regarded amongst the most intriguing and well-accomplished works remaining from the age of discoveries. The extant portion of the map delineates the western coast of Europe and Africa, as well as the eastern coast of Mesoamerica and North America. It includes two thirty-two pointed compass roses in the north and south sections supplemented by three more minor compass roses. The number of compass roses on the surviving fragment indicates a total of seventeen pieces, as in other contemporary portolan-style world maps marking safe harbors, shallow waters and additional coastal features. Compass roses as well as rhumb lines on the maps helped mariners to set navigational courses. Pîrî Reis’ map includes slope length scales around both the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. It is also enriched with several depictions of floating vessels, coastal and territorial settlements, fortresses, exotic animals, indigenous people and ruler portraits, most notably the stylized ruler figures on Portugal, Marrakesh and Guinean soil. The map is elaborated with elephant, ostrich, mountain and fortress drawings in Africa whereas figures of llamas, pumas, monkeys, and a marvelous beast among the mountains and rivers in South America. Pîrî Reis, through explanatory notes, refers to the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) authored by Pope Alexander VI in his map that divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Portuguese and Spanish kingdoms. Pîrî Reis’ world map of 1513 is righteously taken as the most accurate product among the early cartographic works dealing with newly found Americas and the best global map of its age. According to his own notation Pîrî Reis dwelled upon thirty four drawings of various characters in his attempt to create the most up-todate world map available. To this end, he compared the maps under study to supplement his final product and integrated diverse scales applied to available maps
into one. He made use of both occidental and oriental charts, most notably the map of Christopher Columbus, for it has not survived to present day, of which the geographical and cartographic aspects of the earliest oceanic voyages could only be analyzed by Pîrî Reis’ world map. The world map of 1513 contains thirty five legends and marginal notes, as well as around 120 place names some of which are unrecognizable due to erased and damaged parts and similar reasons. Kitâb-ı Bahriyye (Book of Navigation) Kitâb-ı Bahriyye, an atlas of the Aegean and the Mediterranean seaside, was composed in two editions, in an entirely prose form in 1520 and a partly versified version six years later. Pîrî Reis, in explaining the purpose of his work, explicitly states that he had gatheredintelligence and relevant material during the voyages he accompanied his uncle Kemâl Reis and his fellow mariners in order to convey his experience in naval affairs to upcoming generations. In both editions the bulk of the content rests almost entirely upon Pîrî Reis’ personal observations. Kitâb-ı Bahriyye comprises sections dedicated to shallow waters, sandbanks, safe harbors, rock fields on water and reefs, the structure and the depth of certain waters, winds and currents favorable to seafaring, endemic species of plants and animals, valuable ores, water springs, and the human landscape marked on comprehensive maps. Kitâb-ı Bahriyye became an indispensable guidebook for early modern seamen and the charts in it has long served as models for further map production. Pîrî Reis and the World Map of 1528-1529 The world map of 1528–1529 is preserved in the Library of Topkapı Palace Museum, Hazine Collection. It has a length of 69 cm and a width of 68 cm; and it has remained partially complete Pîrî Reis’ former global map of 1513. Embellished with ornamented frame lines, the world map of 1528–1529, is identified as a masterpiece among portolan-style maps and represents one of the finest works in all Ottoman cartographic history. It is the earliest original map delineating Yucatan, Cuba, Haiti, Florida and the North America. It is highly plausible that at the time Pîrî Reis re-edited Kitâb-ı Bahriye with the aim of presenting his work to Süleyman the Magnificent, he also perfected his map of 1513 with more accurate calculations and place names, and with the help of Ottoman court artists, embellished the former map befitting for an imperial ceremony. The world map of 1528–1529 leaves out the fictional islands depicted in Pîrî Reis’ map of 1513 and offers a much more authentic description of American shores. PÎRÎ REİS’ WORLD MAP OF 1513 [1] [Translation from Arabic:] This map is drawn by the humble Pîrî, son of Hacı Mehmed, known as the nephew of Kemâl Reis in Gallipoli. May Allah forgive both.

Muharrem 919 (9 March–7 April 1513). [2] This section tells how these shores and islands were discovered. These shores are called the Antilles. It is discovered in the Arabic year of 896. Yet, it is related that an infidel from Genoa named Columbus has found these lands. It is told that a book fell into the hands of this same Columbus which heralds the existence of shores, islands, and a wide array of precious ores and a mountain of jewelry at the western end of the Atlantic Ocean. Having studied the book in its entirety, he appeals to the Genoese notables saying “Come, provide me with two ships so that I would discover those places”. The Genoese notables reply: “O you scapegrace! Is there an end to the Atlantic Ocean? Seas are submerged in darkness.” Columbus sees that there is no hope of Genoese assistance; he appears before the Spanish king and tells the story once again in detail. However, their reaction are no different from the Genoese. In short, Columbus holds his ground so obstinately that the Spanish king eventually grants him two well-equipped ships and dispatches him into the Atlantic Ocean telling him: “If you prove to be right, I shall name you the captain of the land”. The late Gazi Kemâl Reis had a slave. He used to tell the late Kemâl Reis: “I have been to that land with Columbus three times. We first reached the Strait of Gibraltar. Thenceforth we sailed four thousand miles southwest finally seeing an island in our face. By each move forward, the sea calmed down; breaking waves passed out of sight, and the North Star (mariners mark it solely as star on their compasses) gradually faded away until it became invisible. In that clime stars do not emerge in an array we are aware of.” They drop anchor at the island they had previously come across. The native people of the island come closer to shoot arrows at them; and for the natives deny landing to the island they could not leave the ship to inquire. Men and women alike, hurled darts sharpened with fish bones at the piercing edge. All wandered naked, bare-naked … Conceding that there is no way to set foot on the island they sail further to the other side of the island where they see a boat. The people in the boat flee to land. When they seize the abandoned boat they find out that there is human flesh in it. Then, they appeared to be a clan that cruised from island to island to hunt down people and eat them. Columbus sees another island; they come alongside it only to spot monstrous snakes crawling all over the island; they avoid going ashore and advance to another island where they careen their ship for seventeen days. The inhabitants of this island, perceiving that no harm would come from this ship, bring them fish in a boat. They [the Spaniards] return the favor by presenting the natives glass beads. Apparently Columbus had once read in a book that glass bead was highly valued in that part of the world. As they [the natives] bring more fish in exchange for glass beads, [the Spaniards] provide them continuously

with beads. One day they [the Spaniards] see a woman carrying gold around her arm; trade it again with glass beads, and pronounce that they would bestow much more beads if the natives brought more gold. Then the natives indeed bring down more gold. It appears that they had gold ores concealed among their mountains. Some other day they [the Spaniards] see a man holding a piece of pearl and trade it again with glass beads. When they see the reward the natives bring more pearls. In fact, the island possessed treasures of pearl only a few fathoms away from the shore. Also, they load the ship with a great amount of red dye wood, and in that same year, bring the goods, as well as two captured natives, to the Spanish king. Yet, Columbus not being able to communicate with the captives in their native tongue bespoke them through gestures. Following this expedition the Spanish king dispatches sacks of barley and priests in order to teach the natives how to sow and reap and convert them to his own belief. Thus they had no religion of any sort and wandered all over the land naked like animals. At the present time those lands are entirely exposed and revealed. Columbus marked and named places on those islands and shores so that they should be remembered after him. On the other hand Columbus was a great astrologer; the shores and islands in this map (the map Pîrî Reîs) are quoted from his work. [3] This section tells according to which principles this map was produced. No one in this age possesses a map such as this one. It is recently produced, drawn with this humble servant’s own fair hands. It is based mainly on twenty charts and mappae mundi, one of which was made in the time of Alexander the Great which clearly depicts the territorial parts of the world– the Arabs refer to this map as caferiyye –; eight similar caferiyye maps, an Arabic map of India and four recently made Portuguese maps describing Sindh, Indian and Chinese waters in geometrical patterns; and lastly Columbus’ map of western lands. All these maps were compared, adjusted and combined into one single scale, so that it is as accurate and reliable for the Seven Seas as the map of Columbus among the western seamen is. [4] The Portuguese infidels relate that in this part of the world daylight diminishes to a minimum of two hours and extends at the longest to twenty-two hours; in daytime it grows very hot and in the evening falls a heap of dew on earth. [5] … a Portuguese ship sailing towards the Indian land was once caught by a storm. Taken by the counter wind the ship drifts in the southeast direction until finally it encounters a shore. Upon approaching the shore they realize that it is suitable for anchorage; doing so they reach the shore in a boat; see people wandering around freely and naked, but hurling bolts pointed with
fish bones. They stay in the island for eight days and communicate with the indigenous people by hand gestures. This vessel of barque type was the first to discover and map those lands … This barque changes its course and instead of heading further to India returns to Portugal to herald the discovery. They delineate those shores in great detail, since they were the first to explore them. [6] It is told that in this land live whitebristled beasts in disguise and oxen with six horns. The Portuguese heathens have portrayed them all in their maps … [7] This province is in ruins, suffering under a lack of prosperity. For monstrous snakes crawl all over the territory, the Portuguese infidels avoid to land on these shores and it is reported to be extremely hot. [8] The ruler of Guinea. [9] Gold is extracted from … [missing]. [10] The ruler of Marrakesh [in Morocco]. [11] Lisbon, the seat of government of the Portuguese realm. [12] There is a sort of red dye called vakami that is not able to be seen from a distance … the mountains conceal rich ores, a kind of sheep dwells amidst the red dye trees of whose silk-like wool is said to undo a loop. [13] This land is inhabited and prosperous. The entire population goes naked. [14] This country is called the Antilles; it lies in the sunset direction. It has four kinds of little parrots, white, red, green, and black. The people eat parrot flesh and their head wreaths are made of parrot feathers. Here is a peculiar stone resembling the black touchstone; the indigenous people is said to use it as a battle axe. We saw this stone … and recognized that it is hard and sharp in the extreme. [15] In the mountains of this country live beasts of this shape; yet the coastal line is populated by communities of mankind. There is no limit to gold ore. [16] This monster is seven spans long. Between the eyes lies a distance of one span. However it is harmless and submissive. [17] In this spot there are wild oxen with one horn, as well as monsters in this image. [18] This country is prosperous and densely inhabited. [19] This monster is a wild beast. [20] A Genoese galleass setting sail from Flanders is caught by a storm that drifts the ship accidentally to these isles and thus makes them exposed. [21] It is related that in ancient times a priest named St. Brendan travelled the Seven Seas. During his voyage he comes across this fish which he takes for a piece of land and upon climbing on the back of the fish, he sets a fire going with his fellow seamen. When the fire burns through the fish skin, the fish sinks into the water; they rush to their boat and flee to the ship. This adventure is not taken from the Portuguese infidels, but from mappea mundi instead. [22] These small islands are named
MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine
Undizivercine, that is the eleven virgins. [23] Tirzamatos, in other words three madmen. [24] This sea is called the Western Sea. Western sailors used to call it Mare d’Espagne, the Spanish Sea. Until now it was referred to by this name. Columbus who had traversed this sea discovered all these islands. The heathen kingdom of Portugal further explored the Indian lands, and these two cooperated in order to give a new name to this sea. They named it Ovosano (Ocean), meaning a hard egg. In old ages they were of the opinion that this sea had no ends and led to an infinite darkness. Now they see that so many coasts compass this sea from all sides. Since it resembles more of a lake, they call it a hard egg. Correct. [25] The captain of this caravel is called Messir Anton the Genoese. He grew up in Portugal. One day his caravel was driven by a storm upon these islands where he found ginger in abundance. He has described these islands. [26] The Portuguese infidels do not cross this line further west. All that lies beyond belongs to Spain. They have agreed that the line passing two thousand miles to the west of the Strait of Gibraltar should be a border. Portuguese seamen never trespass to the other side. However, the Portuguese hold possession of the entire southern seas and Indian lands. [27] It is called the island of Antilia. It is abundant with beasts, little parrots, and logwoods, albeit uninhabited. [28] Having driven away by a storm this caravel has unintentionally landed on this island. Her captain was called Nikola di Cuvan. On the island ramble herds of singlehorned oxen. For this reason it is called Isla Vaca, or Cow Island. [29] This barque is driven upon these shores by a storm. Her captain is called Nikola di Cuvan. He notes in his map that the riverbeds marked on the chart are covered with clay mixed with gold. Draining the water they were able to collect a great amount of gold powder. On his map … [30] [missing] … a fort on this shore … [missing] … because … [missing] … gold … [missing] … lower a cable … [missing] … was measured. [31] These four vessels that are also illustrated are Portuguese ships. They sail from the western lands to the Cape of Abyssinia with the aim of arriving Indian soil. They proceed on Şuluk. The distance across this bay is 4200 miles. [32] This is the Portuguese barque which had been drifted by stormy winds to this country. The details are written on the edge of the map. [33] These islands are reported to have gold mine. [34] These islands are uninhabited, yet have a great abundance of spices. [35] Miscellaneous.

Antique city of Myra
T
he antique city of Myra, in the district center of Demre and surroundings, was built on a plain of the same name. The sea was connected to the city by a canal constructed to the west of the Myros River (today called the Demre River). The port of Andriake (Çayağzı) on the other end of the canal was the centre for access to the sea and trade. The antique city of Myra is famous for its Lycian rock-cut tombs, for its Roman theatre and for the Church of Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) dating back to the Byzantine period. The rock tombs, Lycian inscriptions and coins show that Myra was settled from at least the 5th century B.C. According to Strabon, Myra was one of the six leading cities of the Lycian League, and was then named Myrrh in Lycian inscriptions. The 2nd century A.D. was a
period of great development in Myra. Many buildings were constructed and restored by the rich Lycians in the city which was the Metropolis of the Lycian League. During the Byzantine period Myra was the leading city of the region for religion and administration. It achieved its popularity through the Church of Saint Nicholas, which was built for Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus)

who was the Bishop of the city in the 4th century A.D. Myra lost its importance after the 7th century, a consequence of earthquakes, floods with alluvial silt deposited by the river and because of the Muslims coastal raids; and in consequence was reduced to county status after the 12th century. Its remaining consists of a theatre to the south of the acropolis and rock-cut tombs on both sides of the theatre. Inspections have shown that -except for the erecting, firmly built walls from the Roman periodother wall remains dating from the Hellenistic period and even from the 5th century B.C. can be found on top of the acropolis and thereabouts.

Saint Nicholas Saint Nicholas (15 March 270 – 6 December 343), was a historic 4th-century saint and Greek Bishop of Myra (Demre-Turkey) in Lycia. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret giftgiving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, itself from a series of elisions and corruptions of the transliteration of “Saint Nikolaos”. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was common for early Christian saints. In 1087, part of the relics (about half of the bones) were furtively translated to Bari, in southeastern Italy; for this reason, he is also known as Nikolaos of Bari.

Saint Nicholas was born in Lycia, inTurkey. During his life, Constantine became Emperor, following Diocletian who had persecuted Christians, including Nicholas. Christianity then flourished, replacing Greek and Roman Pagan deities, becoming the primary religion. However, after the Seljuk Turks’ conquest (11th–13th centuries) and with the Ottoman Empire’s long reign (14th–20th centuries), the dominant religion in this land, evangelized by the Apostle Paul, became Islam. Today, after the expulsion of Greek Christians in 1922, 99.8%*of Turkish people are Muslim, though Turkey is officially a secular state. In the early 1950s Turks realized that the Bishop of Myra, Saint Nicholas, was none other than the western world’s Santa Claus or Father Christmas. Just as the good saint had brought pilgrims to Myra, and later to Bari, Italy, it was hoped he would again attract tourists and pilgrims with their lira, euros, and dollars. Turkey issued a Santa Claus stamp in 1955, drawing further attention to St. Nicholas’ relationship to this place. Since 1981 regular events somewhat related to the good saint have been held under the sponsorship of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Anatalyan governor’s office. The first Father Christmas Symposium, held in 1983, has become an annual event, lasting about a week over the 6th of December, St. Nicholas Day. Religious and scientific people come from many countries for the Activities for World Peace with Santa Claus, including the Santa Claus Peace Award. This led to the establishment in 1991 of the Santa Claus Foundation to promote peace, friendship and
brotherhood. For many years an Orthodox liturgy was held in the Church of St. Nicholas on the 6th of December, St. Nicholas Day. This was the only service held in the church and it was not allowed from 2002-2006. Government permission was again granted in 2007. However, in January 2008 the name of the St. Nicholas Church (Aziz Nicholas Kilisesi) was officially changed to Father Christmas Museum (Noel Baba Müzesi). This may prevent such a service. A first ever Easter ritual was held in the museum (church) in 2011. The ritual, led

by a priest of the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul, was attended by around 600 people from various countries, including Greece. Beginning in 2009 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has encouraged tourism companies to partner with a desitnation wedding company to promote Demre as a wedding site. The International St. Nicholas in Demre, Antalya, Wedding Festival offers a week-long schedule of activities, including Turkish traditions, culminating with a joint group (10-25 couples) civil, not religious, wedding ceremony in the Demre St. Nicholas “museum” on December 6th. In today’s predominantly Muslim Turkey, commercial interests promote Santa Claus to encourage gift giving at New Year’s. So Western Santa, Noel Baba, is sometimes seen in shopping areas, on the streets, or in schools. Saint Nicholas is remembered in the land of his birth as a person who cared for all people, especially children. He is appreciated for his caring, humanitarian values, and also because he gives a boost to tourism and the economy.

The three ancient regions that the Antalya Museum is responsible for include the big parts of Pamphylia, Lycia and Pisidia. Most of the rescue excavations in the region and the environmental arrangement have been performed by the curators of the museum. In the halls can be seen the remains of early mankind followed by the thousands of years of human history which continued uninterrupted on Antalya’s fertile soil, mostly displayed chronologically but sometimes didactically. The Antalya Museum is among the leading museums of the world; on account of its sculpture works belonging to the Roman period especially from Perge and unique artifacts found during the rescue exactions of the museum. galleries of the 8th Edition Mr Ali Gureli, Chairman of fair says: ‘Since 2006 the aim of CI has been to raise awareness of both local and international artists in Turkey, while increasing interest amongst international audiences in Turkey’s vibrant contemporary artistic scene. Our vision is to be a fair embedded in the culture of Istanbul while being an artistic hub for galleries from across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and
North Africa. We believe in the assets of the local culture should not to be effaced by the uniform, homogenous global culture. Aligning ourselves to the values in the last seven years, we gathered not only galleries from across the world but also hosted countries like Golf Countries, Eastern European Countries and this year Russia. Thus highlighting the unique glocal idiosyncrasy (the character) of Contemporary Istanbul as not only an art fair, but a cultural platform. Previous editions of the fair have been extremely successful with regards to sales and interest, with over 200 international press and the presence of many decisive and eager Turkish collectors. Several groups of international collectors made large acquisitions for their collections. In light of this success, we are happy to announce the launch of two new satellite fairs coinciding with Contemporary Istanbul in 2014, with a focus on photography, new media and emerging artists and galleries.

Istanbul will be Promoted with The “You Can” Concept TUGEV-Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau and Istanbul Chamber of Commerce finalized their new marketing and promotional activity entitled - The Leading Congress Destination Istanbul project. This was partly in response to the fact that Istanbul first broke into the world’s Top 10 Congress Destinations in 2010 and subsequently became the world’s number one congress destination with more than 500 delegates in 2011 & 2012 (ICCA statistics). Within the overall scope of the project, Istanbul created a destination film, congress tourism website and promotional kit. Created around the needs of meetings organisers, event planners and congress delegates; the destination film includes dramatic aerial shots and highlights the city’s venues; whilst brochures, maps, and DVDs will make up the kit. With its unique location spanning Asia and Europe, its history and natural beauty, and its international accommodation and convention facilities, Istanbul offers attractive opportunities for the meetings and events industry. The Project aims to contribute to the efforts intended to improve the ranking of Istanbul from top 10 to 5 among the world’s leading congress cities by 2015. The new Istanbul logo, having the shape of a tulip and symbolizing Turkey and Turkey’s tourism logo, is intended to
ensure continuity and wider recognition. The traditional tulip form comes with a modern touch, with its petals in the shape of a drop of water being colored with the colors of Turkey’s tourism logo; turquoise, red and green. The petals symbolize the communication and connections. When presenting Istanbul, the Project uses the heading ‘You Can...’, as the core concept, and then the subtitles, You Can Visit, You Can Fly, You Can Meet, You Can Experience, You Can Stay, and You Can Taste, referring to what the city has to offer and the city’s unique features, and finally closes with the slogan ‘Istanbul. The Best Place to Connect’. The film, produced for the Project “Istanbul: Leading Congresses Destination” in two versions, each running 3 and 7 minutes, respectively, features 2 international congress delegates telling about Istanbul and what the city has to offer to congress organizations. The film was produced by a production team of 25 in 20 days and at over 100 different locations. The film, the editing process of which took nearly 3 months, comes in 5 different languages: Turkish, English, German, French and Spanish. The film is a combination of time-lapse videos, produced using a special technique to present the viewer a 24hour panorama of Istanbul in only 24 seconds. Produced using only natural daylight, the film presents a natural, intimate and trustable atmosphere. Also an original music has been composed.

Meet-Interview
Interview with Graeme Barnett, Senior Exhibition Director, EIBTM.
Could you please tell us your thoughts about MICE market generally in Europe and EIBTM? Generally, there has been a slow shift from the fragile recovery of 2012 to a more sustained recovery in the world economy of 2013. This has been reflected in growing demand for meetings, events and business travel globally, as measured by almost all major surveys of these sectors. Going forward, forecasts for 2014 indicate growing levels of optimism and modest growth. Those countries that have the strongest economies have seen the greatest levels of growth in this area. Europe has experienced growth in a number of areas including UK, Germany, France and Italy. The UK has witnessed growth and it is expected that both domestic and
international outbound travel spending will accelerate in 2014, with international outbound growth doubling to 3% reaching $13.7 billion and domestic travel will grow at a rate of 4.4% to $28.3 billion Data from IPK International and the World Travel Monitor has also shown that the number of business trips from within Europe to conventions and conferences held in Germany increased by almost a quarter (+23.5 per cent) during 2012, to a total of 3.3 million. The outlook for France in 2014 is also positive, with international outbound growing by 3.3% to $13 billion and domestic travel spending growing 5.4% to $23.8
Graeme Barnett billion and Italy has also seen growth of 1.4% in domestic travel spending and a rise of 1.9% in international outbound travel spending in 2014
Can we get some figures for EIBTM 2013, as participants, sellers, buyers, media...? EIBTM is independently audited so all figures are subject to this audit after the show has taken place. However, we can say that at the time of writing, there will be some 14,000 people onsite this year, which will be similar to 2012. We are though expecting over 3,100 exhibitors and some 4,100 Hosted Buyers.
What is new in EIBTM 2013? At EIBTM we continuously evolve the show in order to keep it fresh and relevant for our customer’s attendees and the entire global meetings and events industry. As well as introducing a number of new features to EIBTM for its 26th edition (our 10th in Barcelona), this year’s major initiative sees a brand new event layout and design which aims to further improve the customer experience for visitors and exhibitors. The new event layout is designed to make it easier for Hosted Buyers and visitors to navigate around the hall with two new aisles providing clear end-to-end access. We also have two new themed restaurant and meeting points - ‘Piazza’s’ have been added at either end of the central aisle to provide improved meeting and dining opportunities along with the several other feature areas which I mentioned earlier. This year, EIBTM is set to feature a new Innovation Zone, sponsored by the Slovenian Tourist Board. This new area on the show floor, formerly known as the Future Events Experience, has been redesigned to feature a number of new initiatives including a stage for Spotlight Sessions (45 second elevator pitches for exhibitors), the Genius Hub, a showcase zone and play area for the Top-Ten Innovations and Wall of Fame. To learn more, visit www.eibtm.com/izone Outside of the exhibition hall, EIBTM is launching a new Meetings Leadership Summit to be held on Monday 18th November. This new event will bring
together 150 of the industry’s leading figures over a luncheon to exchange ideas and views along with a keynote address providing valuable insight and peer to peer networking. Additionally, following the success from last year, the EIBTM Forum, taking place on Monday 18th November (4:30-6:30pm), will set the tone for three days of business ahead. This year our esteemed keynote speaker is James Woudhuysen, Professor of Forecasting and Innovation at De Montfort University, UK, who is renowned for his ability to spot trends and offer counter-intuitive proposals on what to do about them. This will be followed by the presentation of the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) Power and Profile Award, and the presentation of the EIBTM Lifetime Achievement awards launched in 2012. Forum attendees are also invited to attend an exclusive cocktail reception held at the Rey Juan Carlos Hotel, Barcelona. As each of these new elements have been integrated as a result of careful research and analysis of our post show feedback, combined with advice from our Advisory Board and other stakeholders, we are confident that each new element will contribute towards and enhance the attendance experience for everyone.

Do you have any new programmes between sellers and buyers?
Apart from the business appointments, there are of course new Knowledge sessions within the education programme tackling the current and future key issues and trends of the industry. There is also the EIBTM Forum which will take place once again on the Monday afternoon prior to the first day of the expo, with a new speaker agenda, and topic. All the information is on www.eibtm.com/forum Add to this the networking, from the traditional networking hour which happens on the second evening of EIBTM and gives exhibitors, buyers and trade visitors the opportunity to meet without appointments and catch up with those that weren’t on their schedule! We have added both the Champagne and Seafood and Tapas Piazza’s to the show this year, simply to improve meeting and dining opportunities. We understand that networking plays a huge role in the level of business which is achieved at EIBTM and we wanted to provide buyers and exhibitors with the most relaxed and informal atmosphere in which to conduct their meetings.
