Frommers.com. Eleven cities, including Bangkok, Cairo, London, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Guadalajara, Provence, Jaipur, and Chichicastenango have been designated as the world’s best for shoppers. The 11 were chosen not merely for having the widest range of goods and great bargains, but for ensuring that shopping offers an interactive experience, with atmosphere, history and local colour, as well as sights, sounds, smells and traditions to enjoy. Mount Nemrut at Digital World

Towering 2,134 meters over the city of Adıyaman in southeastern Turkey, Mount Nemrut has been transformed into a digital engagement platform. Visited by thousands of tourists every year, Adıyaman and Mount Nemrut will be promoted to a whole new level of fun and engaging tourism activity through gaming and social media applications. After nine months of work, informatics teacher at Adıyaman Fine Arts High School, Mustafa Göksu, and Osman Dolaş of Adıyaman University invented two apps relevant to the region around Mount Nemrut. One of them is an interactive simulation

of King Antiochus I of Commagene providing information about the statues, history and ways to trek around Mount Nemrut. The other is a game, “The Kingdom of Commagene: The Lost Treasure,” which resembles the popular mobile game, “Subway Surf.” Dolaş said the lack of applications promoting Adıyaman was their motivation in developing these games. “I hope people download these games, learn more about Mount Nemrut and visit Adıyaman,” he said. The games can be played on Android cellphones, computers and tablets, and is available on the Google Play Store. The 2,134-meter high Mount Nemrut, which is notably at one of the highest peaks of the Eastern Taurus mountain range in southeastern Turkey, is assumed to be a royal tomb from the first century. In honor of himself, King Antiochus I built monumental sculptures including a temple tomb and house of the gods in the late Hellenistic period along with two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian and Iranian gods, such as Vahagn-Hercules, Aramazd-Zeus or Oromasdes, Bakht-Tyche and Mihr-Apollo-Mithras. The statues that were once whole have since had the heads detached from the bodies and are now scattered throughout the site. The mountain has retained a great deal of its authenticity due to it being protected under the National Conservation Law No. 2863 and National Parks Law No. 2873. The Mount Nemrut Tumulus was registered as a First Degree Archaeological Site under Act No. 2863 in 1986.

A Gift for Istanbul Modern’s 10th Anniversary Angela Doğançay, wife of Burhan Doğançay, a leading figure of the art scene in Turkey who passed away in 2013, has donated one work from his latest series to Istanbul Modern, the first private modern art museum in Turkey to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions. The painting, which was displayed at this museum in 2012 in an exhibition titled “Fifty Years of Urban Walls: A Burhan Doğançay Retrospective” that included 120 works from the artist’s 14 periods, was donated to mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of Istanbul Modern and in honor of Oya and Bülent Eczacıbaşı. “Stonewall” is a significant example of the variety of styles that Doğançay developed over the years on the theme of urban walls that recurs in his work. The collaboration between Istanbul Modern and the Doğançay Museum, which both celebrate their 10th anniversary, is

strengthened even more with Angela Doğançay’s donation.

Flea & Public markets of Istanbul ne man’s trash is another man’s treasure and the flea market is the perfect place to find both. Apart from the endless treasure one can find, the age old flea market has proven to be a lifeline for many communities Browsing, exploring, rummaging, bargaining and buying - flea markets have been supplying the haves and have-nots of Istanbul for hundreds of years. But beyond the exotic, Eastern image of easy bargains for tourists, one leading economist has described how these unofficial institutions generate millions of lira every year, providing a real lifeline for Istanbul’s lowincome earners and vendors alike. These markets also fuel entrepreneurship and provide ways to revive small businesses, according to one expert. Usually an outdoor bazaar where vendors sell all kinds of second-hand items, these flea markets have also become a paradise for bargain hunters, collectors, hipsters and nostalgics. Kenan Seven, a veteran vendor from Kadiköy told: “The flea markets in Istanbul date back to old

times. In the good old days, when something was broken it didn’t go to waste, it was repaired and utilized instead.” An old hand at the trade, Kenan has been working as a flea market dealer since the 1960s like his father before him. “I was born into this secondhand world, my family is one of the most experienced junk market dealers in Istanbul,” he said proudly. You never know what you will find at a flea market from one week to the next, Kenan said: “It is a haven of trivia. You can find some mechanical things, like wrenches or hammers; some technological stuff like computers, CDs, mobile phones or a television remote; or stuffed animals, porcelain mugs, old comic books. But the best thing is that you always find something that belongs to the past.” He added: “Maybe a photograph of a happy couple that you never met and probably never will because they are dead. Maybe some documents such as a sales contract or a marriage certificate. Flea markets are the place between today and yesterday.”

Istanbul has many beautiful places to visit, but you can also take your time in such different bazaars and buy some different gifts to your friends and family. ou may ask that hat e can ϔind or buy in this bazaar, but unfortunately there is no certain answer for that because such places are full of suprises for you to discover. Every week in Istanbul more than 200 markets (pazar) are set. This is an old tradition that comes from the Ottoman times. Markets in Turkey offer more than fruit and vegetables. ou can ϔind almost anything in the markets mentioned in this article. Textiles have a great hand in the popularity of Istanbul’s markets. Even celebrities and high-society members are spotted while shopping at markets, and they don’t look bashful at all.

Meet at Shopping Many textiles and leather products of famous brands are manufactured in Turkey. Most of these brands give their ‘export surplus’ or faulty items to the markets, to be sold with or without showing the brand name. The quality of such items ranges from perfect (export surplus) to slightly faulty, and sometimes even with a big shortcoming (called defolu in Turkish).

A traditional market is set on Tuesdays in Kadıköy, on the Asian side of Istanbul, the Sali Pazari. It all started rather modest in 1969. However, as time passed by, together with the city the market expanded. As a result, Kadıköy pazarı more and more became a sufferance for the hectic city life with blocked traffic during the market days. So, in December 2008, it moved from its traditional place in Altıyol to a modern forty thousand square meters area, with no less than four thousand stalls and a car park in Fikirtepe. This market is famous for the huge amount of women visitors as well as the women stallholders. The cheapest clothes in town are on sale here, so if you’ve been on the road for a while and your underwear needs replenishing, this is the place to do it! To get there, get off the ferry and move straight ahead along the major boulevard of Söğütlüçeşme Caddesi for about 500m until you come to a busy intersection, Altıyol Square. Cross over, take the right fork and continue eastward along Kuşdili Caddesi for another 250m (three cross streets). At Hasırcıbaşı Caddesi turn left and you’ll see the tent-city market spread out

before you. It’s open between 08:00 and 18:00. On Sunday the market is taken over by stall keepers selling a motley collection of antiques, furniture and jewellery. Istanbul is home to many iconic markets in less-than-glamorous locations. The Dolapdere market is one such bazaar located behind a petrol station and an offal restaurant; the Feriköy market offers the city’s most original old furniture and antiques - both are among the metropolis’ most famous markets. As a trend, both Dolapdere and Feriköy open at around 6:00 a.m. on Sundays, and shopping generally continues into the afternoon. Mert Bahtiyar, a 26-yearold university student from Istanbul, is just one of those addicted to searching through the city’s flea markets. He has been a loyal customer of the flea markets in Feriköy and Dolapdere for many years, Mert said: “I and my father always looked forward to Sundays. He used to wake me up in the early hours of Sunday, and we’d just set off with lots of coins in our pocket and with a long list in our mind.” Mert said that flea markets have some distinctive rules both for the customers and vendors: “Seizing a place

MEETURKEY Alternative Tourism & Incentive Magazine

in flea markets early in the morning is certainly the best idea because the most unique and precious finds are sold by the afternoon.” Each flea market, no matter how simple or small, has treasure potential in it, he added. Indicating that he could find many things, especially antique and quality goods in flea markets, he said: “You know the world market is full of Chinese-made products. It is getting harder to find quality on the cheap. There is no point hiding it. If we are strapped we want to save money on our goods, so flea markets are the best places to save money.” In Feriköy public market place, it is being established in each Saturday. Generally second-hand goods are sold, and people have a curiosity for old things and antiques can find something interesting in this bazaar. Postcards, old photos, old documents, old cameras, records, books and sort of souvenirs are waiting for to be owned by curious people. There are not only people who sold their own antique goods but also Professional antique dealers. If you get fatigue because of the magic of this antique place, you can have a break to eat tasteful Gözlemes with Turkish tea.

Besides the cultural richness, flea markets make an economic contribution. Minimumwage earners like African and Asian immigrants plus refugees or the homeless and unemployed both buy and sell in these markets to meet their needs. Economist Serhat Karamursel told that in order to save money, people have again started to see more value in shopping for discounted and second-hand products as opposed to luxury or brand-new items. Stating that flea markets have been worldwide businesses for hundreds of years, Karamursel said: “Small or large, it does not matter; flea markets contribute to the local economy in significant ways, maybe by millions of liras every year. Besides money saved, the flea markets also offer a way to revive a small business, reducing start-up costs and increasing entrepreneurship. Flea markets are good breeding grounds for those who want to go into business.” Karamursel said that small businesses, such as artisans and craftsmen selling homemade or secondhand goods, have the advantage of being mobile in order to make a profit without the extra expenses of a commercial lease or taxes. “But there are some rules and regulations that must to be followed even by movable businesses like flea market vendors; they must pay taxes or else it will be evasion,” Karamursel said. However, vendors react strongly against the tax issue. Cihan S., a 45-year-old vendor from the Feriköy flea market, said: “Flea markets are mostly cash businesses. Many people wonder about how the sellers here are not paying taxes. But we are selling just to survive, not to get rich.” Selling any old abandoned thing he can find from the streets or luxury neighborhoods in the city, Cihan said: “I think that makes the difference between making a little money and making a lot of money in this job. I am not stealing, just working round the clock to find something to sell.” However, Cihan warned: “You

should keep your eyes open. Be watchful of your wallets. As in any big city, crowded markets and bazaars are great places for purse snatchers, and flea markets are no exception.” The Arasta Bazaar on the southeast side of Istanbul’s Blue Mosque is worth visiting for its many shops selling carpets, kilims, Turkish tiles, apparel and souvenirs. While you’re here, you can visit the Great Palace Mosaic Museum beneath the Arasta. An arasta is a series of shops built beneath or near a mosque. Rent from the shops provides money for the maintenance and repair of the mosque. These shops were empty and derelict for many years until the tourism boom of the late 1980s and 1990s convinced those in charge to restore and rent them. Now the Arasta Bazaar (marked on some maps as the southwestern continuation of Kabasakal Caddesi) is among Istanbul’s most-visited tourist markets. At its northeastern end by Mimar Mehmet Ağa Caddesi are several open-air cafes, snack stands and restaurants, one of which has highly-amplified Turkish music until about 01:00 am. To stroll through the Arasta Bazaar is to be invited in by dozens of accomplished, polished salesmen, speaking unaccented English (and a half dozen other languages), with bottomless treasure troves of ironic humor and topical jokes, to have a look, take a seat, sip some Turkish coffee or tea and consider the purchase of what is obviously a priceless treasure...or two or three. Despite the long debate on tax issues, the reliability of the markets’ goods or how prices change from season to season or week to week, Istanbul’s flea markets in 2014 seem to be the city’s most vivacious shopping haunts - just as they were in centuries past.

Meet at Shopping Three Market Shopping Essentials While shopping for textile items, keep the following basic rules in mind: Quality Check — It is your responsibility to check out the quality of the items, so you are allowed to investigate the stall and samples. Crowds Can Be Positive — Every shopper wants to get his or her hands on the highest quality pieces. Therefore, some stalls tend to be more crowded than others, which may indicate where to ϔind the top goodies. e aware though that you could get intimidated by the hassle. When you ϔind an item you might want to buy, do not let go until you have made up your mind. Once you put it down, it’s someone other’s to take. You Can Bargain – Lastly, shout or wave at the stallholder to pack your items and pay for them. You can always bargain, but you won’t always be successful. However, your chances increase with the number of items you plan to buy.

Other Istanbul Markets Fatih Market — Since the Fatih district is located in the historical part of Istanbul, it offers the oldest and also the biggest market place of the city. Locals mostly refer to it as .arçamba aÂœarÇ, since .arçamba (Wednesday) is the market day. It is open between 5am and 9pm. Around 1290 vendors, 4800 stands and about 2500 peddlers compose this market on the 7 main and 17 smaller historic streets of Fatih. Needless to say that Fatih paÂœarÇ is an esteemed market, where you can Ď”ind almost anything ranging from fruit, vegetables, and clothing, to all sorts of household materials. Another bonus for tourists is that it offers a great opportunity to experience the real middle-class local life. YeçilkĂšy Market — Another highly respected Wednesday market, this time located in YeçilkĂšy (literally translated ‘green village’). The area is known for its relatively greener and upper classy setting. You can Ď”ind an array of high quality products in this well-organiÂœed market place. YeçilkĂšy paÂœarÇ covers 12 thousand square meters with 2000 stalls, Ď”loral displays, scattered tea cafes and toilet facilities. Most stalls accept credit cards, but prices may be a bit higher compared to other markets. Beçiktaç Market — A smaller scaled Saturday market with ‘only’ 400 stalls. eçiktaç paÂœarÇ still offers most products you’ll Ď”ind elsewhere, such as shoes, bags, unusual jewellery and home textiles. However, the focus is deĎ”initely on clothing. The market starts building up at dawn and stays until dusk. Ulus Market — lus paÂœarÇ was known as sosyete paÂœarÇ, or society market. Simply because of the variety on display of both fake and real brand products. However, it was closed down in 2005 because of the disturbance it gave to the neighborhood. After a long break sosyete paÂœarÇ

came back with a permanent area opposite to the old one. ecause of this, it’s no longer in lus, but in OrtakĂšy these days. ut yes, it still has the goodies such as ap, Adidas, Fred erry t-shirts, Abercrombie sweatshirts, pants and shirts, urberry boots, alph Lauren t-shirts and the indispensable Louis uitton bags. You can also Ď”ind real fur and leather waistcoats, jackets as well as the make-up products, and many more items. Open on Thursdays between 8 am and 7.30 pm. How to Reach Istanbul’s Markets? In case you prefer a complete local experience, here are your (public) transport options: Fatih Market — Assuming that you are staying in eyoÂşlu or Sultanahmet, I suggest you are better of taking a taxi. The market place is spread out on the streets behind the Fatih mosque. YeçilkĂšy Market — Take bus 72T from Taksim or bus 81 from EminĂšnò, and get off at ark station. Alternatively, you can take the train from Sirkeci station, get off at the YeçilkĂšy stop, and hop on the free transportation to the market place. Beçiktaç Market — Take bus 43 from Taksim and get off at Ihlamur station. I personally prefer a quick taxi ride. Ask the driver to go to eçiktaç aÂœarÇ or Ihlamur asrÇ (Ihlamur alace), which is a well-known landmark close to the market place. Ulus Market — OrtakĂšy ereboyu addesi goes up the hill right across the very famous OrtakĂšy Mosque. The market is located on .ayÇr Sokak, close to OrtakĂšy emetery. You can take a taxi from OrtakĂšy. You can get to OrtakĂšy from Taksim by bus 40 or 40T, and get off at OrtakĂšy station. adÇkĂšy Market — y bus 110 from Taksim, which has adÇkĂšy as its Ď”inal destination. A more enjoyable way is to take the city line ferry from EminĂšnò or arakĂšy to adÇkĂšy. From there on you can take a taxi, or hop on bus 8A and get off at MandÇra addesi or f.Er òlent AltÇnsoy station.

Meet at Exhibition

IT&CMA & CTW Asia-Pacific Double-billed IT&CMA and CTW Asia-Pacific organized in Bangkok between September 30-October 2, with 800 exhibiting delegates looking to secure new MICE business for their hotels and destinations. The show hosted by the Bangkok Convention Centre, Central World. It continued to attract mainly loyal exhibitors from Asia, but there were some new destinations exhibiting this year such as Cambodia and Switzerland. The Thai pavilion dominated the show as the home team mustering 30 new local co-exhibitors. Returning exhibitors also figured with a significant increase of 18% in booth space. More than 10,000 business appointments took place in two days, with over 80 business, education and networking sessions scheduled. “While IT&CMA and CTW Asia-Pacific continue to add value by delivering valuable industry segments of MICE,

association, luxury Travel and Corporate Travel, year after year, the interest and robust support for this year’s event is undoubtedly a reflection of trust and confidence the international MICE and Corporate Travel industry has pledged to Bangkok, and to Thailand as a top business events destination,” commented TTG Asia Media, managing director Darren Ng. The show is even more important for Thailand this year, which is reeling from massive tourism losses, estimated at around 3 million visitors, based on Ministry of Tourism and Sports evaluations and travel agency research. There will be no increases in MICE business, this year, as corporate meetings relocated to neighbouring countries due to the coup followed by a curfew and the continuing martial law status that remains in place throughout the kingdom even today. But the show will help to instil confidence and help Thailand’s MICE industry to fly the flag and draw business in for 2015. The opening ceremony & welcome reception hosted by Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau was held at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre with a party theme “Absolute Happiness’.

The Bodrum Cup leaves 26 years behind despite high winds

The Mediterranean’s largest and most extensive international sea festival, “The Bodrum Cup” set sail for the 26th time this year. 36

November’2014

“The Bodrum Cup” International Regatta was held on October 20-25, 2014. Yachts starting the race off the Bodrum island of Karaada formed “The Bodrum Cup City” in Gumbet inlet at the end of the first day. Various events and a concert by İlhan Şeşen were organized in the City. Close to 120 yachts anchored in the Greek island of Kalymnos on the second day. The third leg of the regatta, which was scheduled to run between Kalymnos and Leros islands was

cancelled because of a squall. The regatta continued with the return of the yachts to Yalıkavak Palmarina and concluded with the Yalıkavak-Bodrum leg. The main sponsor of The 26th Bodrum Cup Regatta was Palmarina Bodrum, with Çağdaş Holding, Bodrum Cruise Port, Denizbank, Bodrum Mutfak, Barbaros Yachting, and agencies and organizations in the Muğla and Bodrum regions providing support.

he 26th Bodrum Cup began on Monday, 20th October with a large and lively parade of participating yacht crews and sector representatives, followed by the traditional ringing of the symbolic ship’s bell by Sadun Boro, Cumhur Gökova, Tanıl Tuncel and Haldun Kargöz, Turkish mariners who have sailed around the world. Performances by Dinar Municipal Band during the parade, at the start line, and later at the City in support of The Bodrum Cup lent color to the races. More than 1,500 contestants and passengers participated in The Bodrum Cup, which is one of the largest regattas in the world where passengers are welcome on board in addition to competing sailors. The presence of many foreign participants among both contestants and passengers was noteworthy. All information on activities and the races was publicized on the social media. The Instagram Photography Contest, juried by The Photographic Arts Federation of Turkey, drew considerable attention. The Blue Voyage Cuisine contest sponsored by Bodrum Mutfak, which took place at The Bodrum Cup City following the first leg, was one of the main events of this year’s races. The regatta participants partied to the songs of Sedat Yüce and İlhan Şeşen on the first night in The Bodrum Cup City. While cancellation of the Leros leg due to forceful winds was good news for the shopkeepers of Kalymnos, it helped the participants discover in detail this neighboring Greek island. The contestants reached Yalikavak after a challenging and exciting race on the fourth day, where they were hosted by The Bodrum Cup’s main sponsor, Palmarina Bodrum. Not even the occasional shower could put a damper on the fun of the Mine concert in the evening. The Wellabled, a yacht specially designed by Turkish engineers that provides the disabled free access to all amenities on board, was The Bodrum Cup’s social responsibility project for this year. Disabled participants shared the excitement and joy of The Bodrum Cup with this project, which was organized for the first time by Acıbadem, D-Marin, Bodrum Health Foundation and Bodrum City Council Disabled Assembly. The dance shows by the disabled ballet dancer Mehmet Sefa Öztürk, who was a participant on Wellabled this year, on the first and last nights of The Bodrum Cup left an indelible mark in the minds of the audience.

Catamarans also raced. The Bodrum Cup, which Era Bodrum Sailing Club has been organizing since 1989, is one of the greatest sportive sea festivals in the Mediterranean, where the passengers can enjoy the pleasures of being on the water and observing the races while learning how to sail. The Bodrum Cup was initially limited to wooden yachts called gulettes, which earned their fame with the Blue Voyage. In the intervening years participation in the non-wooden IRC and cruiser categories grew. Catamarans raced for the first time in The 26th Bodrum Cup. Participation of non-wooden craft in the Cup is organized with the support of Bodrum Offshore Sailing Club (BAYK). The winners of The 26th Bodrum Cup, which was evaluated on their performance over four legs, received their prizes in a ceremony following entertainment events and concerts organized at The Bodrum Cup City. Montenegro, STS Bodrum (The High Heels crew), and Jasmin I came in first in their respective categories, entitling them to carry the regatta flag again this year. Alondra, racing with a Dutch flag, placed first in the classic yachts category and was awarded the overall winner cup by Muğla Metropolitan Mayor Dr. Osman Gürün. Randa won in the standard sail overall category.

İşler, İstanbul guide Arzu Tutuk Altunay, photographer and graphic artist Serkan Taycan, and Cultural Heritage educator Dr Lucienne Senocak. Three primary areas of interest in Turkey emerged: first, the Byzantine sites outside the city – primarily the Arkeopark and the sites of the northern Bosphorus, where Gizem Dörter has been surveying fortifications – work made very necessary by the proposed construction of the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge. Serkan’s project - Between Two Seas – a walk along the extent of the proposed canal linking the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara drew much admiration from those gathered, and could serve as an inspiration for a new project. The second area is the neglected sites of central Istanbul – Dr Ivanof listed 10 Byzantine sites in a poor degree of preservation and to which access is difficult. One is under a hotel; another behind a car workshop, another used for storage of coca-cola! These could be developed for tourism and extend the range of Byzantine monuments which can be seen in the city itself. Added to the existing, well-known monuments, described by Arzu, these could make an in-depth interpretation of Constantinople come to life. The third area is the group of early Byzantine churches in the hills above Myra, on the south coast of Lycia. These churches have been gradually rediscovered since the 1970’s, when a British archaeologist spend many months walking the old roads between them. Since then, the Ancient Language specialists at Akdeniz University, while investigating the old roads of Lycia, have deciphered many inscriptions in the area. Dr Bülent İşler described his own work surveying the churches at Asarcık, near Karabel, about 20km above Demre. The church was built by St Nicholas of Sion, whose life is described in a the Küçükyalı site, where a patriarch of the Orthodox Church of hagiography written soon after his death in about 590.
