Music For Peace and Winds of Peace Music for everything from healing the soul, feeling better, being together and definitely for a promising future that is crowned with Music. I have been mesmerised after listening to El Sistema a few years ago during the IKSV Music Festival. This was a dream that came into life by the far-sighted genius, Dr.Jose Antonio Abreu in 1976. The aim of Dr. Abreu was to bring the children of lesser living standards in peace with the help of music and be part of a society that will sail to future in waves of peace. There is a sustainable spirit of assisting each other that helps in creating a examplary society with a security inflected environment. That was a dream that started at Venezuella 35 years ago and in the summer of 2011 the music roads of El Sistema and Music for Peace, Turkey , established 10 years ago had cross-roads at the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts Foundation organization of the Simon Bolivar Orchestra Istanbul visit. Following this event, Dr. Abreau suggested a meeting before the concert that established and strenthened the foundation of this valuable amicality. Recently, 200 girls and boys came for a summer camp at the Bosphorus University for 10 days and following that gave a concert at the new Leyla Gencer Concert Hall at Bakirkoy. It was so good that after the concert the music continued in front of the concert hall for at least an hour. That is why this is our cover story in this issue . We congratulate Mehmet Selim Baki and Yeliz Baki for starting this journey to Peace with music at Edirnekapi 10 years ago. Their contribution to the society is so meaningful that I do hope that that they can further this Music for Peace to other parts of the Nation and be an example for a Peaceful Generation that creates and composes. Our hopes are for a peaceful nation and world that will shape the future. To realise that we have to, especially, educate the children of lesser social standing with music and art so that they can contribute peaceful deeds to the society rather than crime and chaos. Winds of Peace is another coverage that will further to 2015 for the 100 years commemoration of the Anzacs. We have to sail into another 100 years as a strong nation that is carrying the torch of ATATURK with the following words; Peace in the Nation Peace in the World.

From November 1st until 5th, the 53rd ICCA Conference and General Assembly will take place in Antalya, Turkey. This year, the General Assembly will vote for a new President of ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) since Arnaldo Nardone will step down after having completed his four-year term. Handan Boyce, General Manager of the Halic Congress Center and former General Manager of the Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau, will stand for the Presidential election. We have achieved a huge amount so far but there is always a long way to go with many new areas to discover. ICCA is our community and we can still reach new heights for ourselves personally, as professionals, in our business and in recognition for our industry at largeâ€, is Handan’s mission. In 2006, Handan Boyce (49) took over the first leadership role within ICCA and was elected ICCA Mediterranean Chapter Chair, one year later she was appointed to the Board of Directors of ICCA representing the destination marketing sector. 2010, Handan
became a Management and Finance Committee member and the 3rd Vice President of ICCA. Handan Boyce has been working in the meetings industry for many years and went for its development and advocacy both on national and international level. In 2003, she took over the position as General Manger of the Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau. In this role, she cooperated with sector partners as well as with local and national governments and institutions and pioneered the development of Turkey’s meeting industry. For example, there has been a considerable growth of ICCA membership in Turkey with nearly 300% increase, from 13 members in 2003 to 47 members at present. Accepting the position of General Manager of the Halic Congress Center in 2011, Handan Boyce held a new role in another distinctive sector within the meetings industry: venue management. She expanded her experience in this field by also becoming an active member of AIPC (International Association of Convention Centres). Through the various leadership positions in different sectors of the meetings industry, Handan Boyce has collaborated with national and international associations, meeting management companies and suppliers. Turkey Could Earn Billions from The Halal Tourism Market
T
urkey has emerged as a top European destination which Muslims from Middle East and Far East would like to visit as their next holiday which could be worth billions to the economy. halal-tou-conf14The Muslim Travel Index Europe 2014, released today, has shown that Turkey comes fifth in the list of countries that appeal to Muslim tourists as a future place to visit. According to the research, France topped the list with 30% of popular destinations while Italy and England shared second spot (28%). Germany and Turkey (26%) also made the top five. Experts say that the study shows the potential for Turkey of halal tourism which could be worth over billions annually to the economy especially due to its strong Islamic heritage. The Index revealed that 93% of those travelling abroad said it was important that the country they were visiting had facilities that catered for a halal lifestyle. The halal tourism sector was worth €103 billion in 2013 representing around 13% of global travel expenditures. This figure is expected to reach €141 billion by 2020. “This Index shows the appeal of Italy to the Muslim market is a great indication of the value of halal tourism and the potential of the market to the economy,” said Tasneem Mahmood of CM Media, who are organising the world’s first halal tourism conference in Spain in September. “We already know that Turkey is already very popular with the Middle East and Malaysian countries but as the research shows there is a lot more who would like to come. With the history of Turkey and its strong Islamic heritage and attractions this is a huge market for the country. “For example 39%% of residents from UAE said they would like to visit Turkey for their next holiday. Furthermore these markets travel in different times of the year which means there are opportunities across 12 months. “This research represents great opportunity for tourism boards, tour operators, travel agencies, hotels, restaurants and the entire tourism sector in Italy. “With other European countries now wanting a slice of this lucrative market, there is an increasing need to understand the requirements of Muslim tourists. The Muslim Travel Index Europe 2014 showed that
71% of those who wanted to come to Turkey said they wanted to visit because they had never been before and would like to experience the country. A further 58% wanted to come because Turkey has a strong Islamic heritage that they wanted tolearn about. Over half (53%) wanted to come for the sight-seeing while 52% wanted to experience the Turkish culture. A huge 97% said it was important the country of destination provided halal food while 89% said it was important to provide praying facilities. Turkey came out first (39%) for the European country that UAE tourists would most like to visit. For Malaysian and Saudi Arabian visitors the country came fourth behind the likes of Germany, France and England. The Muslim Travel Index Europe 2014 looked at the attitudes and behaviour of majority Muslim populations to tourism in the future and their experiences of countries they have already visited in Europe. It was conducted with residents from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Malaysian residents who are already frequent visitors to the UK. The Halal Tourism Conference, which is being held on 22 and 23 September 2014, will bring together the travel industry from around the world to discuss ways of tapping into this niche market. The event, which is being hosted in Andalucia, Spain, aims to equip delegates with market intelligence, industry forecasts and trends to understand how to market to the lucrative Muslim consumer and benefit commercially. The two day event hopes to attract tourism boards, tour agencies, tour operators, restaurants, media, hotels and airlines. The event will also feature seminars from industry experts, workshops, networking sessions and an exhibition.

Inside Istanbul’s Music for Peace Foundation The Music for Peace Foundation headquarters is in Edirnekapı, tucked on the hillside just behind the popular tourist destination Kariye (Chora Church). On an average day, from just after dawn to beyond dusk, over 200 young musicians are rehearsing and taking lessons with the staff of 15 teachers. Most of the students live in and around the Edirnekapı area. During the regular school year, the students come to Music for Peace faithfully before school and after school for classes and to practice their instruments. The sounds of music day and night are enlivening this Fatih neighborhood. “It’s very exciting what’s happening, it’s lifechanging,” exclaims director Yeliz Baki to Today’s Zaman. Baki, who has a doctorate in neuro-linguistics, is referring to not only El Sistema’s remarkable results, but in fact, what’s happening to the children right here in Edirnekapı. Baki points to a book entitled “Changing Lives: A Book on Dudamel, El Sistema and the Revolution in Music Education”

by Tricia Tunstall that has recently been translated into Turkish. “It’s the first book written about El Sistema, which is something new that was started for humanity,” she says. “The goal is global and it’s humanistic. Everyone who is involved [in El Sistema] is happy and believes in the future. No one is losing hope. Working as an orchestra, everyone learns to function as a team.” She cited the story of 21-year-old Edirnekapı resident Özmen Genç, who walked in the door six years ago, carrying two knives, one in each jacket pocket. “Knives are a must in the area,” Genç told Today’s Zaman. “They make you feel like a bad person, but we need them for safety. Actually, I couldn’t imagine the reality of not needing them. Before I came here, I was always fighting. Teachers called me a ‘bad boy’ and kicked me out.” One day Genç passed by the school and he heard a drummer practicing. He was curious, and walked in. Baki greeted him and invited him to join in. “But I didn’t understand

why,” he said. “I thought about why for three months.” Baki found out he had a guitar, so she asked him to bring it to the school and teach the children how to play it because the school didn’t have any guitar classes. “She gave me a scholarship to teach guitar,” he said. “And I didn’t even know how to play it!” Genç quickly figured it out, and secretly started to teach as many as 50 children without telling Baki. “I wanted to show her that there could be a guitar class,” he grinned. He also figured out how to play the double bass, and is now learning
“Music is a tool,” explains Baki. “[Through it] they learn how to take responsibility for each other. One time a violinist apologized to me because she was sick and couldn’t come to a rehearsal. She said, ‘I’m so sorry I couldn’t come and help the orchestra.’ For me this is heartwarming. This [kind of music training] will change the world, and we’re at the front of that.” Trombonist Seçkin Özmutlu, after earning a master’s degree from the Brussels Conservatory of Music and a contract with the Samsun State Opera Orchestra, has forsaken the bright lights of a traditional performing career and given his heart
to conduct the orchestra. Six years later, his life is totally transformed. “He’s like a big brother to the kids,” says Baki. “He understands them and all their problems. He even knows all the drug dealers in the area... Özmen is an example of how this system creates the heroes of the future. I feel it inside: Each kid is a potential hero.” During an orchestra rehearsal for the Thursday concert, one small girl in the violin section turned around while playing to help the girl behind her keep up with everyone else.

I call up my musician friends in Germany to come here on their vacations and give lessons. It gives the kids a better chance [in life] to work with the best teachers. This is my way to make changes in Turkey. All the cities in Turkey need El Sistema.”

eries main partner being Land-Rover and Host Venue Partners Yandex and Palmarina , 8th year of elite level Stadium Racing started on the 11th September with an exciting Press Conference where the press found themselves racing on the Extreme 40s. Quite an experience of a life time. I had to congratulate the sponsors and organizers that made this event happen in Istanbul/Turkey as it has world acclaim by the sea- sports and speed lovers and followers. I had a brief but worthy conversation with the Youth and Sports Minister, Akif Cagatay Kilic on the sea sports issue in Turkey to be encouraged at all levels to be designated as a further and valuable tourism destination. The Extreme 40s race with the wind and can be seen as razorblade shapes on the waves. Sailing is a real passion for many around the world and Extreme 40 catamaran is not to be considered a ‘normal’ boat that is why they are synonumous with the Land-Rover which is not a ‘normal’ car. They can tackle extreme conditions on land and sea. 12 Elite-Level Teams, 11 Nations with 58 America’s Cup Campaigns, and 109 World Championship Wins raced. ALINGHI(SUI),EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND(NZL),GAC PINDAR(AUS), GAZPROM TEAM RUSSIA(RUS),RED BULL SAILING TEAM(AUT), SAP EXTREME SAILING TEAM(DEN), THE WAVEMUSCAT(OMA), TEAMTURX(TUR), GROUPAMA SAILING TEAM(FRA), J.P.MORGAN BAR(GBR), OMAN AIR(OMA),REALTEAM(SUI) During the Global Tour of 8 ICONIC Venues spanning the Far
East, Europe, Russia and Australia, these teams raced in Turkey/Istanbul for the second time (2011 was the first one at Halic and the first live broadcast was made by TRT). Now, some information about these ‘Gliding Birds’ of the wind and sea. TornadoSport developed the 40ft Extreme 40 catamaran in 2005 with the concept of bringing sailing to the public and not the other way round. The origins of the Extreme 40 are the former Olympic Class Catamaran, the Tornado – essentially the Extreme 40 is a scaled-up version of the Tornado, all of the dimensions are relative to the Tornado, it is just twice as big and incredibly fast.

hen Rıfat Edin visited Elçin and Ibrahim Öngüt’s summer house in 1980s, Türkbükü was far from being the hot spot of the Turkish Riviera. It was a discreet fishing village and a meeting point of Turkish and European intellectuals and artists. In fact, transportation to the house was by boat and occasionally by the dinghy. The wooden 12 foot dinghy was İbrahim Öngüt’s graduation present by his father when he finished primary school in 1942. Kamil Öngüt saw the dinghy as the tender of a British yacht in front of Moda Yacht Club and had the boat built in Istanbul. When Rıfat and his brother Esat took the dinghy out for a sail in Türkbükü, they remembered their days at Marmara Yacht Club where as kids, they were not allowed to sail these fun looking boats. Rıfat was later to become the leading figure in the establishment of the class in Turkey, building many boats and hosting international events. His house in Tuzla, Istanbul, is now turned into Tuzla Yacht Club (TYK). It is run by the Dırvana family’s sister club, the Bozburun Yacht Club.
The Beginning
The 12 foot dinghy was designed by George Cockshott in 1913 and submitted to the competition of British Boat Builders Association. It won the competition! The aim was to design a dinghy which would combine the best elements of the dinghies then used as tender. The boat was meant to be a tender for large yachts, which could also be used for racing in the bays. The aim was to build a multi-purpose boat. This required several characteristics: It had to be lightweight with a simple rig that could be set up quickly and easily but which as tender, could also be rowed. These characteristics still make it an attractive boat today. By 1920, the12 Foot Dinghy had become the leading One-Design class worldwide and was selected for the 1920 Olympic Games in Belgium and in 1928 in Netherlands. 100 years after the first dinghy was constructed, the 12 foot dinghy is still sailing with international regattas in Italy, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France and in Turkey. On the Pacific side, Japan has a very robust and growing fleet.
12 Foot Dinghy in Turkey Rıfat Edin says that “12 Foot Dinghy was a familiar sight in Istanbul dating back to 1920s. In the 1960s, the class was at its prime in Istanbul but slowly lost its position to Snipe, Finn and the Flying Dutchman. By 1980s only two dinghies were left. One in Bozburun and the other in Türkbükü” In the 1990s Rıfat Edin jump started the construction of the dinghies initially intended for the lake at Edin family’s real estate development. The first wooden dinghies were built by Yusuf Civelekoğlu’s YachtWorks. There are currently 30 dinghies in Turkey. Rıfat Edin’s classic boat collection continues to be a draw for the Tuzla Yacht Club. Two new dinghies are being built for the newest addition to Edin’s fleet of classic boats, Hildegarde (Ipar), which belonged to King Edward VII.

12-foot Dinghy in Japan The 12-foot Dinghy also has a long history In Japan. In 1933, the 12-foot Dinghy became the official Japanese racing boat. It was used by the university sailing clubs for intercollegiate races. However, its prominence decreased when the 470 was adopted as the Japanese racing dinghy in 1972. Like in Turkey, Japanese revival started in 1991 with only 7 boats. However, by 2009, for the 150th anniversary of the Yokohoma Bay, 46 sailing clubs participated in the event and 74 dinghies were sailing in the bay. Japanese sailors will also be participating in 2014 George Cockshott Trophy which will be held at the Tuzla Yacht Club in Istanbul, on September 26-28.
The Italian Impetus In Italy the fist boats were constructed in 1929 and the first championship was held in 1931. Today, more than 200 sailors continue to participate in a variety of regattas. It is one of the countries where the class is most dynamic with year-round regattas all along the coast and on the lakes. When the Italians saw the dinghies displayed at the Istanbul Boat Show, they were delighted to see traces of the 12 Foot Dinghy in Turkey and they invited Rıfat Edin to a regatta in Portofino. This was to prove the beginning of long lasting friendships and a series of İnternational events culminating in the George Cockshott Trophy held in Tuzla in 2008.

The New Generation The young sailors at Istanbul Technical University Naval Academy, which was located next to Rıfat Edin’s house in Tuzla noticed the extraordinary variety of wooden boats, but were most intrigued by the growing number of 12 foot dinghies in recent years. They have invited the dinghies to participate in their competition and one of their sailors, Emre Taşlı sailed with a dinghy
and won the race. Rıfat Edin was looking for a sailing instructor and asked Emre if he would be interested in this position. Emre had previous engagements but his twin brother, Emrah Taşlı, also a very talented sailor accepted the offer. At the 2011 International competition in Tuzla, Emrah came second and was kindly invited by Giorgio Pisarello to Italy for further training. He did not miss this
opportunity and spent months in Europe competing. In 2013, Emrah became the overall winner in various Cockshott Trophy competitions and brought the trophy to Turkey in the 100th year of the inauguration of 12 Foot Dinghy. The original trophy, which belonged to George Cockshott himself, goes to the new winner every year.
New 12 Foot Dinghies and Sailing for Peace Cem Yalçın, a leading industrialist in Ayvalık, who founded Fora Minifera (www.foraminifera.com.tr) in 2013 to promote sailing in Turkey and to provide opportunities for young sailors as well, told me about his plans to build 20 new 12 Foot Dinghies by spring 2015. Fora Minifera is in the process of organizing

“DREAM OF TURKEY” PROJECT?
O
ffering the highest sense of reality, 3D movies turned out to be the most preferred movie type in recent years. The “Dream of Turkey” is a 3D production, tailor-made by qualified movie producers with special techniques and equipment. Requiring some special equipment to watch as well as their production, these movies become multi-dimensional when joined with imagination. The multi-dimension (also as known as “extreme-dimension”) is achieved by specially designed simulators on a moving platform, supported by sense-focused effects. “Dream of Turkey” is the first and only movie that is produced in 3D and integrated with a simulator, presenting the major beauties of Turkey with the highest possible sense of reality. It is an exciting journey backed-up with audio-visual effects. The special simulator synchronized with the movie, creates

a cine-vision appealing to the all 5 senses of the audience. Effects like rain, snow, fog, wind, smoke, smell or bubbles produces a virtual reality and the vibration and movement of the seats enhances the sense of reality. The “Dream of Turkey” is filmed and editted by producing various scenes over the footage of major touristic places of Turkey. The movie captures the audience with the combination of historical and natural beauties, variety of religions, nature sports and mythological tales of Turkey. The story is based upon the dream of a tourist woman in Turkey. In her dream, she travels around the country and through history; one moment she flies around paragliding and the next moment she finds herself as a princess among the gladiator wars. Spectators do not only see the places up from a helicopter but also charge their photographic memory with the memorable historical

Whilst spectators looking over to the city from the sky, they suddenly dive in to a historical building from its window or find themselves travelling in a river when they least expect it, simultaneously feeling the breeze and waterdrops. is with great pleasure that we announce the presence of Moving Image alongside ArtInternational this year. Istanbul lends itself magnificently to such an initiative – the demand for internationally celebrated art is high here and our experience with ArtInternational’s own screening program has shown us that video works are particularly appreciated. We are really happy to be able to welcome this dynamic new element alongside our Fair. I’m grateful to Yesim Turanli of Pi Artworks, a member of ArtInternational’s Selection Committee, who initially suggested this collaboration last March. It seemed immediately a wonderful idea and I congratulate Murat and Edward for seeing it through and taking the decision to expand into this exciting market.”

in ancient times and is considered one of the most important centres for culture and arts of the Hellenistic period. Pergamon was a major centre of learning in the ancient world and home to one of the biggest libraries of the Hellenistic period; thus it has been listed in the category of ‘cultural landscape’. The city contains layers and remains from the Hellenistic, Roman, East Roman and Ottoman period, while ancient Pergamon consists of nine sites including the acropolis, seven tumuli or burial mounds and the rock-cut Kybele Holy Site. Turkey is a country of unique historic and cultural wonders; home to a further 52 cultural sites on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, comprising 49 in the cultural, two in the mixed (cultural/natural) and one in the natural category. ANKARA
A
nkara the capital of Turkey is located in the centre of Anatolia province. With a known history of around 3000, Ankara has seen great heights in the past. Around 3000 years ago, the Hittites established a city by the name of Akuwash (old name for Ankara) at the intersection of two trade routes in Turkey. During its earlier phase, Ankara was ruled by Phrygians, Macedonians (under Alexander the Great),
and Romans. Seljuk Turks captured the city in 1071 AD and renamed it as Enguriye. Most important moment in the history of Ankara came when Atatürk founded his provisional government here in 1920, and in 1923 when it became the capital of Turkish Republic. The city has seen a number of changes since then, however it has been successful enough in maintaining a fine balance between the old and the new and thereby living up to its unique identity
as the “Melting Pot of East and West”. Today, Ankara is a sprawling urban mass thoroughly organized and well - planned and much European in look than most of the cities in Turkey. Its wide-open roads, large hotels, restaurants and government offices distinguish the city. Besides, there are several tourist attractions and meetings in the city making it an ideal destination for the tourists and mice industry.

As you recline on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected in the windows and slender minarets on the opposite shore you understand, suddenly and profoundly, why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build on this remarkable site. In addition to its unique historical and cultural background and innumerable
attractions, modern hotels, exclusive restaurants, nightclubs, cabarets, bazaars and shops make Istanbul a superb site for meetings, conferences and conventions. Istanbul is fast becoming one of the most popular international congress and exhibition destinations. The opening of the Lütfi Kirdar Istanbul international Conference Center (I ICC) doubled the capacity of congress facilities in Istanbul. The I ICC is ideally located in the modern district of Harbiye, at the center of the city’s business, cultural and commercial life, surrounded by some of Europe’s top quality hotels. Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau (ICVB) has all the contacts and information for your meetings in Istanbul. More information;

IZMIR
I
zmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country’s largest port after Istanbul. It is located in the Gulf of Izmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of Izmir Province. Izmir is the inheritor of almost 3,500 years of urban past, and possibly up to that much more in terms of advanced human settlement patterns. It is Turkey’s first port for exports and its free zone, a Turkish-U.S. joint-venture established in 1990, is the leader among the twenty that Turkey counts. Its workforce, and particularly its rising class of young professionals, concentrated either in the city or in its immediate vicinity (such as in Manisa), and under either larger companies
or SME’s, affirm their name in an increasingly wider global scale and intensity. Izmir is widely regarded as one of the most liberal Turkish cities in terms of values, ideology, lifestyle, dynamism and gender roles. The Izmir Convention & Visitors Bureau (Izmir CVB) was founded in 2007 by Izmir Tourism Promotion Foundation (IZTAV), as a non-profitable, independent of any marketing structure information exchange bureau. Izmir CVB’s mission is to promote the city’s rich cultural and natural assets and it’s great potential on a national and international level and is seeking guidelines and best practice to develop the city’s congress tourism.
