After the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 2009 as the Katip Celebi Year, the exhibition opened at San Bernardino State University in California, the UNESCO Hall in Paris, Damascus National Museum, Aleppo and Riga. The exhibition will also be inaugurated in Europe, America, Middle East and Central Asia in coming days. An OttomanTurkish geographer and cartographer born between 1465 and 1470 in Gelibolu, west of Turkey, Piri Reis is primarily known today for his maps and charts collected in his Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of Navigation), a book which contains detailed information on navigation as well as extremely accurate charts describing the important ports and cities of the Mediterranean Sea. He gained fame as a cartographer when a small part of his first world map (prepared in 1513) was discovered in 1929 at Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. The most surprising aspect was the presence of the Americas on an Ottoman map, making it the oldest known Turkish map showing the New World, and one of the oldest maps of America still in existence in the world (the oldest known map of America that’s still in existence is the map drawn by Juan de la Cosa in 1500, which is conserved in the Naval Museum (Museo Naval) of Madrid, Spain.) ‘’Let’s meet at the Anatolian peak’’

2011 University Winter Olympics-Erzurum Palandoken

H

ome to many international ski competitions, Palandoken ski resort in Eastern Turkey is one of Turkey’s best ski destinations, with its superb snow conditions, long runs and excellent facilities and accommodation options. This year, 25th Winter Universiade will be held at the Erzurum Palandoken ski resort between January 27 to February 6. Erzurum is more excited than ever these days as it is getting prepared for the 2011 Winter Games with the tagline “Let’s Meet at the Peak of Anatolia.” Starting from the airport, the excitement is palpable all around the city. The preparations for the Winter Games, which will be held for the first time in Turkey in Erzurum, have been made in a manner fit for an Olympic city. Athletes and spectators have already flown into the city, which expects around sixty thousand visitors during the Games. Erzurum, which is one of the world’s largest settlements that sit more than 2,000 meters above sea level, the fairy tale setting of Palandöken is one of the major sites for the 2011 Winter Universiade. Soon, it shall be touched by the magic

wand of the organization, which will be held with the participation of nearly three thousand athletes from fiftyseven countries. An investment of 45 million TL has totally transformed Palandöken’s appearance. The region’s skiing season, which usually lasts 150 days, has been extended by a month using snow machines and the latest technologies. Ponds have been created to supply water for snow machines as part of the preparations for the Winter Games. The amenities and capacities of the hotels have also been augmented. The areas allotted for winter sports were expanded. Professional search and rescue teams, mobile clinics, and snow clearing machines have been allocated for guests in case of emergencies. Palandöken is the pride of Anatolia with its world class winter sports facilities, warming people up with its natural beauties even when the temperature falls below 20 degrees. With a 70-kilometer mountain range pinned together by conical peaks, this is a rare gem of a place for winter sports. The snow, which doesn’t blow away even in the windiest of conditions, is ideal for winter sports. With five luxury hotels to choose from, including four star and five star hotels, Palandöken is a point of attraction not just for athletes but for honeymooning couples, nature lovers, photographers, mountain climbers, and business people too. Palandoken is situated on the northern slopes of the mountain which shares the same name and has an altitude in excess of 9,842 feet. The resort village of Palandoken is situated at 7,218 feet and

has commendable facilities including a ski school with highly qualified instructors, ski and snowboard equipment hire, first-aid station and a clinic. In addition, several of the hotels here have ski shops with an array of skiing merchandise for sale. Palandoken receives a massive annual snow fall of around eight feet and there are 25 miles of well-groomed pistes in Palandoken and a 2,952-foot vertical, with three chairlifts and a t-bar providing slope access at a rate of 1,100 people per hour. There are several ski-in/ski-out hotels at Palandoken ski resort that offer fantastic wellness and après-ski facilities.

Palandoken ski resort has all the usual ski-related services and facilities including a ski school, lots of ski shops with rentals and repairs, and a clinic and first-aid centre. There are hundreds of beds available at the slopes in top notch hotels and chalets, while Erzurum and the surrounding villages have a bed base in excess of 6,000. Palandoken, having the best ski courses of Turkey with its crystallized snow pattern and longest snow season, makes a quick start for this year’s season. Away from the slopes and not far from Palandoken ski resort is the popular and historical town of Erzurum, which boasts a historical district and a

modern city with tree-lined boulevards and grand buildings. Sights to look out for are the Seljuk buildings, 12thcentury Ulu Mosque and the Cifte Minareli Medrese, a double minaret masterpiece. Palandoken ski resort’s ski season extends from October to May and it has quality snow conditions throughout most of the season; cheaper rates can be had in October. Flying to Erzurum from Istanbul and taking a taxi is the most convenient means of transport to Palandoken. The only real option for getting to Palandoken from the world is to fly to Istanbul and then take a 90-minute flight to Erzurum on Turkish Airlines or

Sumahan on The Water Named to The Prestigious List

“Sumahan on the water” a newly restored nineteenth century Ottoman distillery, which opened its doors as a hotel in May 2005, has been named to the prestigious list of Andrew Harper. Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, the most respected publication in luxury travel, announced its 2011 Grand Award Winners. We are pleased to announce that Sumahan on the Water was named to the coveted list, which is comprised of Mr. Harper’s 19 favorite properties visited within the past calendar year. Roughly equidistant from the Bosphorus Bridge and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, this attractive 18-room hotel occupies a three-story former raki distillery that is perched right at the edge of the water. Its welcome proved warm, and the book-filled library adjacent to the reception desk was an appealing place to sit for a few minutes while the staff confirmed that their duplex Loft Suite was ready. This proved a delight, with a wood burning fireplace in the cozy sitting room on the main floor, from which French doors opened onto a grassy verge beside the Bosphorus. The living area came with a wool-flannel sofa and a plasma-screen television with a DVD player on which to watch movies from the hotel’s extensive video library. A proper stairway with a railing and wide wooden steps led up to the bedroom loft, which had two small windows overlooking the Bosphorus, and a large, very comfortable bed. The full bath was clad in gray marble and provided a soaking tub and stall shower, plus Turkish toiletries, including olive oil soap and spice scented shampoo and lotion. The property’s excellent seafood restaurant, Kordon, actually preceded the hotel, having moved to the site in 2001. In fair weather, tables are set outside beneath an awning, from where there is a glorious view of the water and the Bosphorus Bridge. The Hideaway of the Year and the sixteen Grand Award winners around the world will be revealed in the January 2011 issue of Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report and online at www.AndrewHarper.com on January 3, 2010. All of Mr. Harper’s Grand Award winners possess exceptional character, a commitment to classic hospitality and a profound sense of place. Mr. Harper does not evaluate

Last year it was criticised by its own employees for not focusing more on markets such as Turkey and Russia. Until now, Turkish Airlines has been the only airline operating between Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport and Zagreb’s Pleso Airport. Along with Istanbul, which will be an all year round service, Croatia Airlines is launching several new seasonal flights this summer including services from Dubrovnik to Athens and Venice, from Zadar to Munich, from Split to Hamburg and from Rijeka to London. Croatia Airlines has had a disappointing year passenger wise. While in 2010 most airlines (including all other national EXYU carriers) saw an increase in the number of passengers, Croatia Airlines’ numbers have dipped by almost 7%. oğu ile Batı’nın coğrafya, kültür, tarih ve siyasi kesişme noktası odağında yer alan Zagreb şehri, Hırvatistan’ın başkentidir ve Adriyatik denizine baglanan kara parçası ile Akdeniz ruhunu zengin içeriğe sahip bir bütün haline getirmiştir.
