Fight Against Nature Yes, tourism is peace. People from different races, religions, nations, and ethnic groups come together with tourism, they travel together, become friends and live in peace.

If from North Pole to South Pole, East to West, this planet with its nature, historical artifacts, cultures, and gastronomical examples form reasons to travel, we have to fight with people that try to demolish them.

38 Alexandroupolis’de Bir Hafta Sonu

Because if whales die, dolphins disappear, green forests cut, historical sites demolish for several reasons, how we will make tourism? We have to fight with people that cutting forests to make golf course, hotel, resort, people that demolish historical sites to make dam, people that pollute air to produce energy, people that kill whales, dolphins... etc. We have to fight for peace and tourism.

Malatya region is best known for its apricot orchards. About 50% of the fresh apricot production and 95% of the dried apricot production in Turkey, the world’s leading apricot producer, is provided by Malatya[9] and the name of the fruit is synonymous with the city. Overall, about 10-15% of the worldwide crop of fresh apricots, and about 65-80% of the worldwide production of dried apricots comes out of Malatya. Malatya apricots are often sun-dried by family-run orchards using traditional methods, before they are collected and shipped throughout the world.

Historic Mass at Monastery in Trabzon-Turkey Around 2,500 Orthodox Christians held the first Mass in 88 years at the ancient Sümela Monastery in Turkey’s north-eastern province of Trabzon at August 15. Trabzon Governor Kizilcik said that the service, which was held first time after 88 years, was attended by Orthodox Christians from Greece, Russia, Georgia, USA, Turkey and led by Patriarch Bartholomew I; the spiritual leader of the world’s Orthodox Christians. “We are most thankful as this day is sacred for not only believers in the Black Sea but for all Orthodox and the Christian world as it is the Assumption Day of Mother Mary. We are blessed to celebrate this day here in Sümela. First it is grace from God and then it is grace from the government,” said Patriarch Bartholomew I. Standing at the foot of a steep cliff facing the Altindere valley in Trabzon’s Macka town, Sumela Monastery lies at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters. Founded in the year 386 AD during the reign of the Emperor Theodosius I (375-395), legend has it that two priests undertook the founding of the monastery on the site after having discovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave on the mountain. The principal elements of the Monastery complex are the Rock Church, several chapels, kitchens, student rooms, a guesthouse, a library, and a sacred spring revered by

Orthodox Greeks. The entrance to the Monastery leads up a long and narrow stairway. The inner and outer walls of the Rock Church and the walls of the adjacent chapel are decorated with frescoes. The main subject of the frescoes is biblical scenes telling the story of Christ and the Virgin Mary. n

Over 4 million Visited Turkey Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo More than 4 million people visited Turkey Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo which will run until October 31, 2010. The theme of the Turkish Pavilion was inspired by one of the first known settlements in the world, Çatalhöyük, which is currently located in the center of Anatolia. The exterior design of the pavilion has been realized in consideration with the wall frescos found at a house in Çatalhöyük which is the earliest known center of population in the whole world belonging to the Neolithic Age. The fresco on the wall represents the volcanic mountain, Hasandağ, and the houses in Çatalhöyük. It depicts the plan or the appearance of the world’s first center of population. The façade has been interpreted as impressed by the said fresco. It is also interesting to see how that Neolithic-age fresco is in compliance with today’s architectural trends. The organizers of the Turkish pavilion have given away eight-day holidays to 8,888 Chinese visitors. More than 37.8 million people have visited the Expo site since it opened on May 1. n

Faces of America in Turkey Eight American students had their first international experience in Turkey this summer, where they participated in AFS-USA’s Faces of America program on scholarships from The American Turkish Society and partnering communitybased youth organizations. The students, six of whom are from New York City, stayed with Turkish families in Bursa, Istanbul, Izmir, Samsun and Karadeniz Eregli. AFS-USA’s Faces of America program provides scholarships for high school students from underserved communities to participate in summer exchange programs. The students were selected for participation in the program based on their records of community involvement and academic achievement and their ability to serve as cultural ambassadors. A significant portion of their program costs were met by the scholarships, and the participants also benefited from fundraising workshops and extensive orientation programs held before, during, and after their stays. Outside of the United States, an average of 9% of students spend time abroad. In America, less than 1.3% of students participate in intercultural exchange, and only a very small percentage of this number are economically disadvantaged minority students, students from low-income immigrant families and other students facing serious economic

hardship. In an ever-more connected world, access to cultural exchange is increasingly important in terms of both personal growth and future success in education and employment. Yet, the costs associated with foreign exchange programs often exclude participation by students in lowincome families and underserved communities. For these youth, scarce educational opportunities have been further affected by the difficult economic environment of recent years. Since 2008, shortly after the Faces of America program’s inception, The American Turkish Society has partnered with AFS-USA to address these hurdles by providing scholarships for disadvantaged youth to participate in summer exchange programs in Turkey relating to community service, language study, and cultural immersion. The Society and AFS-USA share a belief that “intercultural education provides the experience young students need to become compassionate, informed global citizens who are ready, willing and able to bridge cross-cultural divides.” Moreover, through this partnership, The Society seeks to increase American students’ knowledge and understanding of Turkey and offer the necessary incentives and opportunities to travel to Turkey, where participation by U.S. students in study abroad/ exchange programs continues to be relatively low compared to other recipient countries. n

The 2nd Çanakkale Biennial to Start 20 September Çanakkale; a beautiful city facing the Gallipoli Peninsula, the land of Troy is celebrating its second biennial this year. The home of myths and legends, Çanakkale is the Dardanelles Straits that once upon a time the Arganouts had sailed through in order to find the legendary golden fleece. It is the true home of mythological heroes such as The Helen of Troy, Achilles and Hector. Çanakkale is situated atthe crossroads between Europe and Asia. Now this ancient city is being transformed into a cultural and artistic center, destined to become the art capital of The Turkish North West. Traditionally, The Civic Government of Çanakkale has always been a great promoter of the arts, especially the visual arts. One of the oldest festivals in Turkey- The Festival of Troy has been running for more than 47 years. The idea of a Biennial first took shape in 2006, at an exhibition entitled “The Past Tense Dreams” which was an activity within the festival programme. The exhibition was held at an old tobacco warehouse which was later turned into The Mannfred Korfmann Library; named after the legendary archeologist of Troy. In the following year, during the 44th Festival of Troy, an exhibition called “The Border Line” was organised, with an unprecedented number of participants, which was soon transformed into an international biennial that inevitably put Çanakkale in the league of biennial organising cities

of the world. The curators Seyhan Boztepe and Denizhan Özer, the organisers of the two groundbreaking exhibitions, then organised The First Çanakkale Biennial in 2008,entitled “Transparent Illusions” at the 45th Troya Festival activities. Now, the 2nd Çanakkale Biennial will be held between 20 September and 10 October2010 with a theme of “Fictional Realities, Transformations”. The curators; Seyhan Boztepe, Denizhan Özer, coordinator; Ismail Erten, and Mayor of Çanakkale Ulgur Gökhan are looking forward to welcome guests and participants for the 2nd Çanakkale Biennial. The biennial will include paintings, sculptures, installations and photography by many distinguished artists from 30 different countries, as well as many performances and dance shows. Experimental video artworks will be shown on a giant screen, placed on the Çanakkale promenade. Many different and interesting locations within The Çanakkale city center will host the biennial exhibitions, such as The Naval Museum Art Gallery, The Yacht Club Marina, The Old Church, shopping centers, many unused depots, derelict houses and civic spaces. Within the many biennial activities, there are educational programmes and workshops, designed to meet artists with local children and young people. The works of art created during these events will be exhibited in the city center during and after the biennial. n

Air Astana Reports Strong Performance During First Half 2010 Kazakh flag carrier continues to lead CIS region with an allwestern fleet, expanding Central Asia network and service innovation. Air Astana, the flag carrier of the Republic of Kazakhstan, experienced strong growth during the first half of 2010, with passenger numbers increasing by 14% and revenue jumping 24% to US$245 million compared to the same period in 2009. The carrier performed almost 13,000 scheduled flights, with an average passenger load factor of 66%. These figures were achieved despite operational disruptions caused by a very severe winter across Kazakhstan and closure of European airspace at the time of the Icelandic volcano explosion. Half yearly profit before tax was a record $33.5 million, up 34% over 2009. Improved aircraft utilisation enabled Air Astana to increase frequencies on domestic trunk routes from both Astana and Almaty, with international service frequencies being increased to Frankfurt, Baku, Urumchi, Beijing and Kuala Lumpur. The continuing growth of Almaty as a hub for Central Asia continued with Urumqui in western China being added to the existing destinations of Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan and Novosibirsk in southern Russia. Services from Almaty to Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan and Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan are scheduled to commence during the second half of 2010. A fleet of new generation Embraer E-190 airliners has been selected to operate on the airline’s expanding Central Asia network, with the first of three leased aircraft scheduled for delivery in early 2011. Air Astana’s strategic commitment to pilot development saw the acquisition of Airbus 320 family and Boeing 767/757

Enhanced Virtual Procedures Trainers, jointly developed with Aerosim Technologies Inc, whilst the airline’s first group of ab-initio pilots graduated from the Pilot Training Centre, Florida Institute of Technology, USA in June. Air Astana sees the need to dramatically increase it current pool of 310 pilots in order to match route and fleet growth over the next decade. Other highlights during the first half of 2010 were the introduction of the KCTV personal entertainment system on long haul services, a new website, and the latest Skytrax ranking of third best carrier in Eastern Europe, and best airline in the CIS. “Air Astana continues to lead the CIS region with its modern fleet, expanding network, and service improvements. Financial results have exceeded expectations. These have been driven by revenue increases across all markets. Although the cost savings which resulted in 2009 being a record year have come under some pressure with the improving economy, overall prospects for the full year are good” said Peter Foster, President of Air Astana. Air Astana commenced regular flight operations on 15th May 2002 and currently operates a network that serves 26 domestic and 23 international destinations from its hubs in Almaty, Astana and Atyrau. Airport Passenger Traffic Rebound Continues in June 2010 ACI World reports that firm passenger demand brought strong 8 percent traffic growth in June 2010 compared to June 2009, maintaining the positive momentum established in the preceding months. International passenger growth contributed strongly with a rise of over 10 percent, and domestic traffic grew by 6 percent. Overall results are similar to May growth levels, with further acceleration in the Asia-Pacific region - driven notably by international traffic in China, South Korea, Malaysia and Japan. The June 2009 reference period for month-over-month comparisons was the last month with substantial overall losses before growth resumed in July/ August. North America’s domestic market is still lagging behind (less than 1%) due to strict airline capacity and yield management. Mid-year results Equally positive results are seen in the six month year-to-date comparisons with overall world passenger traffic increasing by 6 percent, international by almost 7 percent and domestic traffic by 5 percent. Notable growth of more than 20 percent was reported by Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Jakarta, Sao Paulo (GRU), Shanghai Pudong and Moscow Sheremetjevo. ACI World Director of Economics Andreas Schimm comments on mitigating factors, “The first semester results for 2010 are rated against the background of a dismal first half of 2009. Another analysis factor to keep in mind is that the volcanic ash crisis in April 2010 slowed traffic substantially in Europe and in relevant global markets. It can be assumed, however, that many of the trips cancelled during the airspace closure were eventually rebooked in May and June, particularly for international travel. Europe and North America remain decoupled from the extraordinary recovery path of other regions that were driven by emerging markets and economies.” (See Tables 4 and 5 for regional comparisons) Diverging recovery pattern To gain a clearer perspective on 2010 traffic growth, ACI has also compared first semester results 2010 to first semester results in 2008, a period of relative calm prior to the global economic downturn. (See Tables 2 and 3 below) For passenger traffic, this comparison highlights significant shifts in world traffic shares. For the first six months of 2008, North America and Europe had larger total traffic volumes than the other regions, but both regions reported approximately 7.5 percent fewer passengers for the same period in 2010. Asia Pacific airport traffic, by contrast, grew by 11.5 percent in comparing total traffic in 2008 and 2010. Middle Eastern airports are a remarkable 19 percent above the 2008 level, with Africa and Latin America-Caribbean just slightly above 2008 first term results. In short, North America and Europe remain well behind their respective 2008 pre-crisis levels whereas the other regions have emerged stronger.

(Same sample composition for both years) Schimm comments, “Overall, the global industry in the first half was still almost one percent down compared to the precrisis period due to the significant declines in the major regions Europe and North America. The impact of the volcanic ash crisis on Europe’s declining 2010 results further exacerbated the slow return of European international traffic to pre-crisis levels, but it does not overshadow the structural change in the markets of the air traffic industry. It is the strong growth in the domestic markets in China and Brazil that have shifted the balance.” FREIGHT TRAFFIC Air freight worldwide continues to grow by over 20 percent for the seventh month in a row. June results show that major international freight hubs Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Miami, Incheon and Dubai grew by more than 25 percent compared to 2009. Again comparing to early 2008, total freight tonnage worldwide in the first six months surpassed tonnage shipped in the first half of 2008, the period before the economic crisis took hold. International freight is the driver of this growth with Asia-Pacific and Middle East, up by 4 percent and 21.5 percent respectively. Asia-Pacific has further extended its lead in market share to 38 percent of global air freight tonnage supported by a strong 13 percent increase in domestic freight traffic. (Same sample composition for both years) Declines in the other regions however are still considerable. Europe (-1.6%) has almost reached pre-crisis levels while North America (-4.4%), Latin America/ Caribbean (-4.4%), and Africa (-6%) still have some way to go to overcome the effects of the downturn on air freight. With the exception of Asia-Pacific (+13% domestic), the reductions in domestic air freight demand are still very significant, underscoring the likelihood that the export industry is driving the recovery.

Strongest first half for Etihad, with Double Digit Growth over 2009 Etihad Airways reported its strongest first half performance, with large increases in both passenger and cargo traffic. The airline experienced double digit growth in the first half of 2010, with passenger numbers up 11 per cent and revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) up 22.6 per cent over the same period last year. The growth in passenger numbers, to almost 3.3 million, was accompanied by a rise in seat factors, from 71.5 per cent to 72.5 per cent. There was also a 21.6 per cent increase in cargo tonnage carried during the quarter, with revenues up by 59 per cent. Despite growth of 20.9 per cent in available seat kilometres (ASKs), the airline reduced its costs per available seat kilometre by 4 per cent in the six months ended 30 June 2010. The improvements were seen despite the difficulties caused by the volcanic ash which covered Europe’s air routes in April, causing severe disruption to air travel during the month. The figures mark Etihad’s best first half performance and signal a return to strong passenger and cargo growth, following the impacts of the global economic recession. Highlights of the second quarter included: the establishment of non-stop flights from Abu Dhabi to Tokyo, with Etihad the first Middle Eastern airline to operate to the Japanese capital; the launch of new non-stop services to Baghdad and Erbil;

Etihad being awarded the Airbus Top Operational Excellence Award for its fleet of A340-500/600 aircraft at the Airbus Technical Symposium in Berlin, after the airline was found to outperform other airline fleets based on a number of criteria for operational excellence over a two-year period; Etihad passing its International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), which seeks to ensure that airlines are compliant with safety requirements and recommended practices determined by IATA; and Etihad being named the Middle East’s Leading Airline at the World Travel Awards for the Middle East in May, one of six awards on the night, followed by winning the World’s Best First Class award at the Skytrax awards later in the month. James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, said: “We are very pleased with our performance over the first half of this year. Despite the continuing economic challenges faced by all airlines, our investment in infrastructure and in our service offer is paying off. “Looking forward, the trends are promising, with forward bookings on an upward trajectory. We are also seeing signs of improvements in premium traffic. “With this continued improvement in our passenger and cargo traffic, particularly in the premium cabins, we are confident of meeting our targets.” The airline will operate a total of 1,032 flights a week this summer, a 16 per cent rise on the 888 weekly flights that operated during the same season in 2009. The airline has reported strong forward bookings for the summer. n

Lufthansa Group Profits from Recovery in Demand and Cost Discipline During the first six months of 2010, the Lufthansa Group generated revenues totalling 12.6 billion euros; equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 23.5 per cent. The traffic revenue rose by 30 per cent to 10.2 billion euros. During the reporting period, the Group’s operating income increased by altogether 22.2 per cent to 14.2 billion euros. Operating expenses rose by 22.9 per cent to 14.2 billion euros during the first half of the year. This was mainly due to the higher fuel costs which rose by 874 million euros; this was equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 56.1 per cent, which was both price and volume related. The fees and charges were 29 per cent above the previous year’s figure. Mexicana Airlines Files for Bankruptcy efforts to boost productivity by expanding and renewing fleet, enhancing its route network, as well as introducing state of the art technologies. These measures have translated into improved operating efficiency, savings in excess of US$800 million and has contributed resources superior to US$350 million. Although these initiatives helped offset a sharp drop in demand for air services due to the global financial crisis and the AH1N1 flu epidemic of 2009, the Company’s current cost structure makes it financially non-viable. Malev’s Passenger Numbers Maintained at Last Year’s Level

In the first six months of 2010 Malév’s passenger traffic was similar to that of the same period in 2009, with a total of 1.3 million customers flying on the carrier’s services. Even though there was no increase, still the number of passengers reflects an improvement in efficiency because it managed to achieve the same result with 16% fewer flights and increased the average load factor by 3.5%. The airline also cut its costs by a significant amount - 16.6 million Euros - in the first half of this year compared with the January-June 2009 figure. As has already been reported, last year Malév implemented major cost-cutting measures, the results

of which are apparent this year. In the framework of the fleet unification programme the airline has restructured its fleet on two aircraft types (B737 and Bombardier Q400), trimmed its workforce by 25%, closed several loss-making routes (among them, in 2008, its long-haul flights that were generating losses of billions of forints), closed its offices in 12 countries and ensured that sales activities are conducted by professional general sales agents. Closure of the expensive offices abroad is currently ongoing. “Our significant cost-cutting measures are still not enough to stem the losses. The airline was particularly badly hit this year by unfavourable exchange rate fluctuations and the crisis caused by the volcanic ash cloud. At the same time, the situation of Malév is no different from that of other European carriers, which clearly shows the depth of crisis facing the industry in Europe,” said Martin Gauss, pointing out the unforeseen difficulties faced in the first half of the year. n

Emirates Takes Giant leap with its AC Milan Sponsorship Emirates is taking one giant leap in the world of sports sponsorship by taking its A380 to Milan for the official unveiling of AC Milan’s new Fly Emirates shirt. The super-jumbo gesture, the first chance passengers have had to fly commercially to and from Italy on an A380, will form the backdrop of a high profile event on 29th July at Malpensa Airport. The A380 will replace Emirates’ morning Milan service out of Dubai, (EK093), on 29th July. It will depart Terminal 3 at 0640hrs and arrive at 1215hrs in Milan. The double-decker offers 14 lavish First Class Private Suites, 76 new generation fully-flat seats in Business Class and 399 seats in a more roomy Economy cabin. However, the most talked about aspects of the Emirates’ A380 are the Onboard Lounge where premium passengers can enjoy a drink and talk business with other travellers, as well as the Onboard Shower Spas where customers can take a refreshing shower at 43,000 feet. Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe & Russian Federation, said: “Emirates enjoys making big statements and they don’t get much bigger than this. The AC Milan shirt unveiling is a great

opportunity to showcase our A380 product and demonstrate our commitment to sport, especially when it is just two days ahead of the Emirates Cup in London on 31st July when the new shirt will be worn by the team for the first time during a game.” In the presence of world famous players David Beckham - who was on loan from LA Galaxy at the time - and Ronaldinho, Emirates announced in February a new 60 million Euro deal with AC Milan, giving the airline prestigious shirt sponsor status over five years. The Adidas shirt will be unveiled officially for the first time at Malpensa Airport in the presence of the AC Milan team and VIP guests. Emirates flies to Milan, Rome and Venice as part of its 103 destination network across six continents. Services to Tokyo, Amsterdam and Prague have been launched so far this year to be followed by Madrid on 1st August and Dakar a month later. The airline is the biggest A380 customer in the world with 11 in the fleet and a further 79 on order. It currently deploys the super-jumbo to London Heathrow, Toronto, Bangkok, Paris, Jeddah, Seoul, Sydney and Auckland. The Emirates’ A380 has also made appearances at events in Hamburg, Berlin and Birmingham in the UK. n

LOT Polish Airlines Fly to Warsaw Chopin Airport in September Due to the planned refurbishment of the runway crossing at Warsaw Chopin Airport during the first three weekends of September, LOT has adjusted its flight schedule to conform to the reduced operational capacity of the airport on those days. During the first three weekends of September of this year, that is, the days of the 4th, 5th, 11th and 18th of September, the crossing of the runways at Warsaw Chopin Airport will be undergoing renovation, which will make it impossible to carry out our flight operations according to schedule. The airstrips which will be available for use at that time will allow LOT Polish Airlines to carry out flights using only ATR 72 and ATR 42 aircrafts. On the 4th, 5th, 11th and 18th of September, LOT Polish Airlines’ flight schedule will be significantly limited. Modification to the flight schedule will also be in effect on the September 3rd, 6th, 10th, 12th, 17th, and 19th, that is, the days immediately preceding and following the dates when the renovations will take place. The changes will be based on the necessity of cancelling some evening and morning domestic and European flights. Connections to regional airports will remain unchanged. On the 4th , 5th , 11th and 18th of September ATR aircrafts belonging to Eurolot, operating LOT Polish Airlines’ routes, will carry out only connections to certain European and domestic airports, while some flights operated on Embraer 145, 170 and 175 jets and Boeing 737s will be transferred to other Polish airports. The number of domestic and international flights has been adjusted to meet equipment and operational capacities on those days. Due to the impossibility of transatlantic flights from

Chopin Airport during the renovations, additional flights to New York, Chicago and Toronto have been added to the reservation system from regional airports in Gdańsk, Rzeszów, and Katowice. A change in the rotation of B767 aircrafts on those days will allow for flights between Kraków and New York. This connection is generally only projected to be possible during the summer flight schedule, that is, until the end of August. Charter flights, which were to depart from Chopin Airport during the runway renovations will be operated from Łódź and Katowice. LOT will be informing travel agencies on where specific flights will depart from on an ongoing basis. Travel agencies will contact passengers who have purchased flights through them directly, and will be responsible for organising transport of their Customers to the regional airports. Passengers who purchased tickets themselves on charter flights through Charter Mix will be contacted directly by representatives of LOT Polish Airlines. All changes to the schedule were made properly in advance of the departure time. As of April, the reservation systems had deleted the flights to be cancelled due to the renovations. Passengers who had made reservations on cancelled flights were immediately informed of changes to the schedule, and their reservations were either changed to another date or cancelled according to their wishes. The sale of tickets on LOT Polish Airlines’ flights through the web site LOT.com was fully co-ordinated with the limited schedule in effect for the period of renovation of the airport. There is therefore no reason for concern that potential passengers have made or will make reservations on flights which have been cancelled. n NewFocus September / October’ 2010

name from the Hittite language. It is located 670 kms east of Ankara, and the two small towns outside the city constitute the most important sites for visiting. Aslantepe, at a distance of 7 kms, was once the capital of a Hittite state and dates back to the first millenium BC. It is the city carrying the old Hittite traditions and styles, and inside the city walls a palace has been found, with statues and reliefs, which are examples of the artistic works of that age. Battalgazi, 9 kms from Malatya, is an ancient city of the Byzantine period, known as “Melitene” in those times.

The city walls of this medieval center were constructed by the Byzantines. Inside the town, there is the Ulu Mosque of 1247 which was built by the Seljuks, reflecting their distinct architectural style. The archaeological finds from Malatya are housed in the city museum, including new artifacts found in the lower Euphrates region, dating to the Neolithic and Calcholithic Ages. Next to this museum, there is a nice and original bazaar. Copper objects are sold along an entire street here, and it is a nice shopping place which will add color to your holiday. The Malatya

Nemrut Mountain

N

emrut Dag (Mt Nemrud) is a mountain measuring 2,150meters in height. It is located near the village of Karadut in Kahta county in the province of Adiyaman. Kings of the Kommagene dynasty from 80 B.C. to 72 A.D ruled Adiyaman and its vicinity. This kingdom, whose capital was Samosata (now called Samsat), was founded around 80 B.C. by Mithridates 1, father of Antiochos 1. The kingdom’s independence came to an end with its defeat by Roman legions in the last of the Kommagene wars and it became part of the Roman province of Syria. At its height, Kommagene extended from the Toros (Taurus) mountains on the north to the Firat (Euphrates) river on the east and southeast, to present-day Gaziantep on the south, and to the county of Pazarcik in Kahramanmaras on the west. The magnificent ruins on the summit of Mt Nemrud are not those of an inhabited site however. They are instead the famous tumulus (burial mound) and hierotheseion (a word that is derived from Greek and refers to the sacred burial precinct of the royal family, and whose use is known only in Kommagene) of King Antiochos I of Kommagene, who ruled from 69 to 36 B.C. In a cult inscription, King Antiochos declares that he had the site built for the ages and generations that were to follow him “as a debt of thanks to the gods and to his deified ancestors for their manifest assistance”. The king also declares that his aim was to provide for the people an “ex- ample of the piety that the gods commanded be shown towards the gods and towards ancestors. “Professor K. Dorner has traced the genealogy of Antiochos 1, who was himself born of a Persian father and a Seleucid-Macedonian mother. His findings indicate that Antiochos I of Commagene claimed descent, through his father Mithridates, from Dareios (Darius) 1 (522-486 B.C.) and, through his mother Laodike, from Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) Mt Nemrud is located 100 kms from Adiyaman. No reference is made to it in ancient sources. Karl Sester, a German road engineer, rediscovered it in modern times in 1881. An expedition to Mt Nemrud was organized in 1882-83 by Karl NewFocus September / October’ 2010

29

Focus On COVER STORY Humann and Otto Puchstein, who published their findings in a book entitled Reisen in Kleinasien und Nordsyrien (Berlin 1890). Osman Hamdi Bey and Osgan Effendi also investigated the site in 1883 and their findings were published in a book entitled Le Tumulus de Nemroud Dagh (Istanbul 1883). F. Karl Dorner and Rudolf Naumann mounted an expedition to Mt Nemrud in 1938. Dorner returned to the site after 1951 and began working there with the US researcher Teresa Goell. In 1984, a Turkish-German team led by Professor Dorner successfully carried out restoration work at the site. Excavation and restoration work has been continuing since 1989 under the direction of Sencer Sahin. In 1989, Nemrut Dag and its environs were declared a national park. The tumulus on the summit of Mt Nemrud measures 50 meters high and covers an area 150 meters in diameter. It is formed from stones the size of a fist and is bounded on the east, west, and north by terraced courts carved out of the native rock. The eastern court was the center of the sacred precinct and is the most important group of sculptural and architectural works. It is surrounded on the west by colossal statues, on the east by a fire altar in the shape of a stepped pyramid, and on the north and south by low walls of orthostats (upright stone

30

slabs) standing on a long, narrow base. The orthostats overlooking the court on the north were deco- rated with reliefs depicting the Persian ancestors of Antiochos while those on the south had reliefs depicting his Macedonian forbears. At the head of the list of deified ancestors there are two eminent names: that of Dareios 1, the founder of the Achaemenid dynasty on his father’s side, and of Alexander the Great on his mother’s. The names of the persons depicted in the reliefs on the fronts of the orthostats were carved on the rear faces. In front of each relief there was an altar on which sacrifices could be performed. The well-preserved colossal statues overlooking the court on the east are made of blocks of limestone and measure eight to ten meters in height. The figures are shown in a sitting position. Inscriptions identify the statues (whose names are given in Greek and Persian on account of the syncretic amalgamation of the Greek and Persian religions) on the eastern terrace from left to right in the following order: Antiochos, the goddess Kommagene, Zeus-Oromasdes (the Graeco-Persian sky-god and supreme deity, and also the largest-sized statue), Apollo-Mithras, and Herakles-Artagnes. On either side of the divinities stood a guardian eagle and lion. The heads of all the deities have toppled over onto ground in the intervening centuries.

NewFocus September / October’ 2010

Their finely worked facial features are striking examples of the idealized late Hellenistic style. The gods wear Persian headgear. The necks of Antiochos and the other gods are protected by lappets in the Persian fashion. The head of the goddess Kommagene is decorated with a crown of fruit. The sides of the pedestals overlooking the court and the tumulus are inscribed with the country’s laws and commandments as well as with the king’s birthday and de- tails of cult procedures, all written in the Greek script. The colossal statues on the western terrace are arranged in the same way as those on the east. Their heads also lie about on the ground but are better preserved. The statues were re-erected in their places in the course of work carried out in 1985 under the direction of F. K. D6rner. Owing to the different topographical features between the east and west terraces, the orthostats bearing the inscriptions and reliefs of the ancestors on the latter are arranged differently from those on the former. The slabs with the reliefs of the king’s Persian ancestors are set along the southern edge of the western terrace while those of his Macedonian forbears are arranged opposite the monumental statues. In the western terrace, the reliefs showing Antiochos shaking hands with different divinities are very well preserved; of the slabs that depicted the same scenes on the east terrace, only a

few fragments remain. The handshaking scenes that are to be seen on the west are as follows: Antiochos and the goddess Kommagene; Antiochos and Apollo-Mithras; Antiochos and ZeusOromasdes; Antiochos and HeraklesArtagnes. The relief of the lion in the west court is of particular interest. The stone slab measures 1.75 meters in height and is 2.40 meters long. It shows a powerful lion walking to the right. Its body is decorated with nineteen stars and there is a crescent moon on the breast. From the three larger stars on the lion’s back, sixteen rays emerge as opposed to the smaller stars, which have only eight rays each. These three larger stars are identified in writing as Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars. What we see here is a picture of the world’s oldest horoscope. It was originally supposed that the horoscope referred to Antiochos’s birthdate but Professor Otto Neugebauer identifies it as the seventh of July in the year 62 or 61 B.C. This corresponds to the date on which Antiochos I was installed on the throne by the Roman general Pompey. According to Professor Dorner on the other hand, the event being represented is the establishment of the Nemrut Dag, monument. The north terrace took the form of a processional way that connected the terraces on the east and west. The colossal statues of an eagle on either side guard the entrance through the exact center of the wall forming the north terrace. According to

inscriptions on the backs of the thrones on which the divinities are seated, King Antiochos 1 of Kommagene ordered that he be buried in this hierothseion. The excavations that have been carried out here have revealed that the tumulus was heaped up atop rocky hill. This makes it very likely that the king’s bones (or ashes) were placed in a chamber cut into the rock an that the chamber was then covered over with the tumulus. Despite efforts however, the burial chamber itself has not yet been reached. Mount Nemrut was made a World heritage site by UNESCO. Tourists typically visit Nemrut during May through mid of October. There are daily and overnight tours from Malatya. It is a popular place for car and bus trips to the site, and one can also travel from there by helicopter. Nemrut Mountain in Kahta District, the graves, temples and the statues of kings are extremely interesting for tourists. The province has recorded great developments in agriculture thanks to the introduction of irrigation with the GAP project, and industrialization has accelerated in recent years. The Commagene State was founded in the first century B.C. on the lands of the Adiyaman Province of today. King Antiochus I, who was known to be an art lover, decided that his grave should be at the summit of Nemrut Mountain and said, “Those who come to visit my grave should wear their most beautiful clothes and the most fragrant

perfumes. I will give them happiness and prosperity for generations on these lands.” In fact, the Nemrut Mountain National Park and the summit of Nemrut Mountain, with its impressive silhouette at a height of 2150 meters, is the place in the province visited the most by domestic and foreign tourists, with its natural beauty and historical assets. The mausoleum of Antiochus I, located at the summit of the mountain, is surrounded by three sacred areas in the shape of a terrace carved into the hard rock, to the east, west and north. At the eastern terrace are located the statues of Apollo, the god of art; Tyche (Fortuna), the goddess of fertility and fortune; Zeus, the god of the heavens; Hercules, the god of strength; King Antiochus; an eagle and a lion. The height of the statues is close to 9 meters. The steles of the Commagene Royal Family are to the north and south, and to the east of the terrace, there is a rectangular shaped altar with steps, and beside it a protective lion statue. The western terrace, where there are the same statues, is more effective in its sculpture, in spite of the fact that it has experienced more damage in comparison with the eastern terrace. Nemrut Mountain has a unique pastoral beauty, especially at sunset on the western terrace, and visitors experience moments that they will not forget as long as they live.

) yanısıra, Küçükçekmece’den her gün saat 11.0012.00 arası Yunanistan’a araba kalkıyor.

Piramitlerin 3, Taç Mahal’in 1, Çin Seddi’nin 5 kriterle UNESCO listesinde yer alması Hasankeyf’in evrensel değerini ortaya koyuyor.
