Now hosting season starts! 2010 Marketing efforts since November will slow down through end of April and results will be received from May. In other words, sales and marketing people in tourism industry are no longer need to run from one exhibition to another. However, this time professionals at airlines, tour operator, travel agent and hotels will host and show their hospitality to travelers. Success at sales and marketing will be evaluated with the hotels occupancy levels and profits throughout the summer season. After the last weeks unexpected eruption of Mt. Eyjafjallajokul in Iceland, affected the tourism growth and as a result tourism professionals will have more difficult times this year. Unfortunately, first tourism growth is affected from a natural disaster. We may forget. Do you remember how Chernobyl disaster, mad-cow disease, last year’s swine flu affected tourism? We wish those natural events will reduce. But all of us should move to protect the environment. Wishing you a happy and peaceful season…

The Guardian Publishes First-Ever Turkey-Themed Travel Supplement
The Guardian newspaper published its first-ever Turkey-only travel section at 10 April 2010, highlighting the country’s increasing popularity with British holidaymakers. Indeed British visitor numbers to Turkey are up from 1.9 million in 2007 to 2.4 million in 2009. With an average issue readership of 1,205,000, the Travel section of the Guardian is published in full-colour with a remit to cover travel for the budget-conscious, families, food-lovers, those seeking a healthy break and much more. Highlights of this special Turkey-only travel section which aimed to reveal more of the hidden gems of Turkey include an introductory piece by writer Kevin Gould on the undiscovered places around Turkey that most tourists miss and an article on the new Evliya Çelebi walking & riding route across Turkey. Other features include the cities of Bursa and Konya, Side and the coastal resorts, activity holiday ideas and cultural Turkey focusing on Cappadocia. Director of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office UK Irfan Onal says: “We are delighted that a quality newspaper such as the Guardian with its sophisticated readership has chosen to devote its whole travel section to Turkey this weekend. This will be a brilliant means of showing the diversity that Turkey has to offer the visitor and be of great interest to its British readers who have made Turkey their number one destination.” Commenting on this landmark issue, Gemma Bowes, Acting TravelEditor of the Guardian says “Turkey is such a fantastic country and increasingly popular with British tourists, with 2.5 million expected to visit this year. And yet most stick to the same well-known places along the Mediterranean coast and Istanbul. We wanted to highlight the fact there is so much more to see in the country, and its rich travel opportunities, from the new long distance walking routes, secret unspoilt beaches and far eastern and Black Sea areas, to alternative city breaks in Konya and Bursa.” n
World’s Oldest Temple Found in Turkey A team of archaeologists has claimed that a temple being excavated in southeastern Turkey is 12,000 years old and is likely the oldest temple ever uncovered in the world. According to a report by United Press International (UPI), the site was first identified in 1986 when a farmer tilling his field in Sanliurfa found a statuette in the soil. Since then, archaeologists have uncovered the foundation of the temple built in the Neolithic Age along with carvings of pigs, foxes, snakes, fawns and headless humans. Officials with the Harran University Archaeology Department have yet to identify the culture that built the temple or their belief system. German teams were the first to excavate beginning in 1995, but the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry placed the site on its first-degree protection list in 2005, taking control of the research. Prior to this discovery, the world’s oldest known temple was in Malta, dating from 5,000 B.C. n

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Office launched its first ever UK commercial radio campaign this week with advertising on Magic 105.4 FM, featuring the seductive voice of radio and TV presenter Mariella Frostrup backed by evocative Turkish melodies. The concept behind the campaign is to position Turkey as a holiday destination with a huge range of experiences to offer and to present an ‘alternative’ side of Turkey to the usual sun, sea, sand and lowcost holiday themes of the past. The campaign which comprises three different adverts will run for eight weeks and reach over 2.6 million listeners nationwide with each listener hearing one of the adverts at least five times. There are three adverts which feature Mariella Frostrup to the back drop of the evocative music “Bosphorus Blues” by Aidan Love in this first ever radio campaign; the first introduces fascinating cultural facts about Turkey, the next Istanbul as a European Capital of Culture for 2010 and the last the variety of experiences on offer in the country. All the adverts promote the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office’s website www.gototurkey.co.uk. Irfan Onal, Director for Turkish Culture and Tourism Office, explains: “We want to challenge listeners’ perceptions of Turkey, and tempt them to visit it for a completely different - and affordable - experience. We introduce the concepts of ancient cities, arts and culture, active sports and great cuisine - all in one location”. n

amukkale is one of the tourism paradise of Turkey, The stunning white calcium pools, which cling to the side of a ridge, have long been one of the most famous picture postcard views of Turkey. Pamukkale, literally meaning “cotton castle”, is also the site of the ancient city of Hierapolis of which there are many interesting ruins, and is a very popular destination for a short visits. Every year hosting over 1 million local and international visitors with its travertines’ visual beauty.

The healing thermal water that provided Pamukkale to be a residential area for thousands of years, is also spring of famous white travertines. It is known that the thermal springs in Karahayıt and Gölemezli which are close to the Pamukkale, are good for , rheumatism, heart diseases, stomach, arteriosclerosis, , blood pressure and skin diseases. Some of the hotels in the region, serviceing to the health tourism with their Professional personal. The Thermal Pool in Pamukkale, providing facilities for the visitors to entertain, with its 35 ˚ fixed temperature water. Pamukkale was formed when a spring with a high content of dissolved calcium bicarbonate cascaded over the edge of the cliff, which cooled and hardened leaving calcium deposits. This formed into natural pools, shelves and ridges, which tourists could plunge and splash in the warm water. Hotels were springing up from the 1970s to cater for the large influx of tourists, and shortly afterwards UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. But by the 1990s, this took its toll on the state of the calcium pools and restrictions were placed on these travertine terraces. Many hotels were knocked down, visitors are only allowed on major paths around the sites, and must remove footwear to stand on the calcium deposits. This seems to have been a successful move, as the water supply is now used for preservation and some of the damaged calcium deposits have been strengthened. The antique city Hierapolis and Pamukkale which are together in the same place is 20 km far from the city center. Hierapolis which is founded in B.C. 197, is taking attention because one apostle of the Jesus has been killed here. And so Hierapolis is very important for the region tourism. Karahayıt Thermal Spring and Mineral Waters he Thermal Source is in Karahayıt Town about 5 km north of Pamukkale and also a part of the Pamukkale Thermal Sources System. The water composition resembles that of Pamukkale Thermal Sources, but it is warmer and has less CO2. There are three sources. The first one is 420C, the second is 50 0C and the third source is 56 0C. The water also has mildly radioactive elements. The thermal water is good for the heart, hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure, rheumatism, sciatica, skin and nerve diseases.

That’s why the water has formed different colored travertines according to its contents. Karahayıt used to be just a local tourist destination, but nowadays it is an international destination because many hotels have been built. Karahayıt Town is almost as important as Pamukkale. The Karahayıt Red Cascades cover about 500 m2. The cascades are one of the most interesting places to see in Denizli.

Pamukkale Thermal Spring and Mineral Waters he sources of thermal water for Pamukkale are about 20 km from Denizli. The ancient city of Hierapolis is also located in the same place. The water comes from underground karstic caverns and creates the cascades through precipitation of CaCO3 (calcium bicarbonate ) as the CO2 (carbon dioxide) evaporates. Thermal spring water is beneficial for myocardium and cardiac complaints. The curative value of this thermal spring was understood in ancient times as well. It has been used for centuries. During the Roman Era religious ceremonies and festivals were held at the thermal pools, and important statesmen and rich people came to Hierapolis to be cured. Religious functionaries and ancient physicians administered healing. The spring waters are rich in calcium, magnesium sulfate, bicarbonate and carbon dioxide. They also have a radioactive content of 1,537 picocuries/liter. The pH is 6.0. Travertine is a kind of rock which is formed as calcium bicarbonate precipitates out of hot spring water. It may be formed in many ways under different atmospheric conditions. Geological activity of the past affected a large area in which the Pamukkale thermal springs are found. There are 17 thermal sources in this special area with temperatures ranging between 35-100°C. The source of Pamukkale is only one unit of that whole area. The thermal water flows to the top of the cascades by a 320-meter-long channel and then flows on the cascades about 240-300 m. CaCO3 begins to precipitate on the cascades as the carbon dioxide evaporates, but in the beginning the precipitate is soft like gel. It needs time to completely dry and harden. In order to protect the cascades from destruction and to preserve their natural beauty, entrance to the travertine area has been prohibited since 15 May 1997. Weather conditions, the temperature of the water, and sufficient time for water to spread and flow are very important for the maintenance of white travertines. Precipitation goes on until the levels of carbon dioxide in the thermal water and the surrounding air are balanced.
Pamukkale Thermal Resort Thermal Water Contents: The water has;
Ions: Potassium (K) 13.5 mg, Sodium (Na) 332.3 mg, Calcium (Ca) 464.5 mg, Magnesium (Mg) 911 mg, Iron (Fe) 0.036 mg, Aluminum (Al) 2.34 mg. Anions: Chlorinate (CL) 53, Nitrate (NO3), Sulfate (SO4) 675.5, Hydro phosphate (HPO4) 1.08, Hydro Carbonate (HCO3) 1045.3. Water temperature: 33°C - 35.5°C pH value: 5.83 - 6.02 Physical and chemical properties: Thermal, hypertonic, bicarbonate, sulphur, calcium, carbon dioxide. Recommended Applications: Drinking and bathing Helps to heal: Drinking - digestive system especially stomach, intestines, liver and gall bladder disorders, dyspepsia, diabetes, obesity and gout. Bathing – arthritis, rheumatic ailments like osteoporosis, bronchial asthma, blood pressure, hardening of the arteries and circulation problems.
While the quantity of CO2 is 725 mg/l in the source, it is only 125 mg/l at the end of the travertines. Calcium bicarbonate also decreases from 1200 mg/l to 400 mg/l, and calcium decreases from 576 to 8 mg/l. Analysis indicates that 499.9 mg of CaCO3 precipitates per liter of thermal water over the cascades. The average density of the thermal water is 1.48 g/ cm3 with a flow rate of 466.2 liters/second. That means 43,191 grams of calcium bicarbonate precipitate from the thermal water per day. Theoretically, that can whiten a 13,584 m2 area. However, whitening a 13,584 m2 area is practically very difficult. The whole travertine area currently covers 22,000 m2.There is an area called ‘’Domuz Çukuru’’ which is about 3000 m2 on an old street which used to be connected to Pamukkale Town. It is free for tourists. Ions: Potassium (K) 13.5 mg, Sodium (Na) 332.3 mg, Calcium (Ca) 464.5 mg, Magnesium (Mg) 911 mg, Iron (Fe) 0.036 mg, Aluminum (Al) 2.34 mg. In 1750 the Assyrians invited the Nehroz to Midyat to avoid the attacks of the tribes around. So the neighborhood and the house, where the Nehroz moved in, were called by their name. After the Nehroz summer place had been used as home by the Nehroz (Yenigün) family throughout centuries, the place was renovated in 2009 in a regional architectural style as Kasr-ı Nehroz Boutique Hotel and opened its doors to new guests. Volcano Crisis Cost Airlines $1.7 Billion The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimated that the Icelandic volcano crisis cost airlines more than $1.7 billion in lost revenue. For a three-day period (17-19 April), when disruptions were greatest, lost revenues reached $400 million per day. “Lost revenues now total more than $1.7 billion for airlines alone. At the worst, the crisis impacted 29% of global aviation and affected 1.2 million passengers a day. The scale of the crisis eclipsed 9/11 when US airspace was closed for three days,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO. IATA noted there are some cost savings related to the flight groundings. For example, the fuel bill is $110 million a day less compared to normal. But airlines face added costs including from passenger care. “For an industry that lost $9.4 billion last year and was forecast to lose a further $2.8 billion in 2010, this crisis is devastating. It is hitting hardest where the carriers are in the most difficult financial situation. Europe’s carriers were already expected to lose $2.2 billion this year-the largest in the industry,” said Bisignani.
Mitigating the Financial Impact “As we are counting the costs of the crisis we must also look for ways to mitigate the impact. Some of our airport partners are setting industry best practice. London Heathrow and Dubai are waiving parking fees and not charging for repositioning flights. Others airports must follow,” said Bisignani. But the larger role is for governments. Bisignani made four specific requests for regulatory relief: Relax Airport Slot Rules: IATA urged that rules on take-off and landing slot allocation (use it or lose it) be relaxed to reflect the extra-ordinary nature of the crisis. Lift Restrictions on Night Flights: IATA urged governments to relax bans on night flights so carriers can take every opportunity to get stranded passengers back home as soon as possible. Address Unfair Passenger Care Regulations: “This crisis is an act of god-completely beyond the control of airlines. Insurers certainly see it this way. But Europe’s passenger rights regulations take no consideration of this. These regulations provide no relief for extraordinary situations and still hold airlines responsible to pay for hotels, meals and telephones. The regulations were never meant for such extra-ordinary situations. It is urgent that the European Commission finds a way to ease this unfair burden,” said Bisignani.
Bisignani also urged governments to examine ways for governments to compensate airlines for lost revenues. Following 9/11, the US government provided $5 billion to compensate airlines for the costs of grounding the fleet for three days. The European Commission also allowed European states to provide similar assistance. “I am the first one to say that this industry does not want or need bailouts. But this crisis is not the result of running our business badly. It is an extra-ordinary situation exaggerated with a poor decision-making process by national governments. The airlines could not do business normally. Governments should help carriers recover the cost of this disruption,” said Bisignani.
Re-Opening Air Space On Monday, the European Commission announced revised measures for handling airspace closures, following widespread criticism of their methodology. “Airspace was being closed based on theoretical models not on facts. Test flights by our members showed that the models were wrong. Our top priority is safety. Without compromising on safety, Europe needed to find a way to make decisions based on facts and risk assessment, not theories,” said Bisignani. “The decision to categorize airspace based on risk was a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, not all states are applying this uniformly. It is an embarrassing situation for Europe, which after decades of discussion, still does not have an effective Single European Sky. The chaos and economic losses of the last week are a clarion call to Europe’s political leaders that a Single European Sky is critical and urgent,” said Bisignani. n

Etihad Reports 25.4 % Q1 Growth in Revenue Passenger Kms. Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, reported 25.4 per cent growth in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) in the first quarter of 2010, far out-pacing the industry average and running ahead of the airline’s available seat kilometres (ASKs) growth of 22 per cent. The improvement, against the first quarter of 2009, was matched by an increase in seat factors, from 73 per cent to 75 per cent. Passenger numbers increased by 11 per cent and, despite the continuing economic downturn affecting many of Etihad’s international markets, premium traffic also increased by five per cent. James Hogan, Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer, said: “These are encouraging figures. Despite operating in the worst air transport recession in history, Etihad has continued its growth trajectory. “Our investment in our product and in our brand has helped us to attract higher numbers of passengers in both economy and premium cabins.” The airline said that its long haul operations made important contributions to its performance in the first quarter, including: · 87 per cent seat factors in economy on the new Chicago route; · Asia-Pacific and Australian routes all operating at seat factors of more than 80 per cent in the economy cabin; and · European, American and Australian routes all operating at more than two thirds full in the business cabin during the period. Etihad’s first quarter figures build on its 2009 performance, which saw RPKs increase by 15 per cent and total passenger numbers rise from 6.0 million to 6.3 million. Those figures were boosted by eight new route launches through the year, to Melbourne, Astana, Istanbul, Athens, Larnaca, Chicago, Cape Town and Hyderabad. James Hogan said: “2009 was a very difficult year for the global air travel industry. The worst global recession in living memory, coupled with the H1N1 pandemic, led to a huge drop in demand for air travel. “Airlines around the world have seen passenger numbers drop and yields have fallen significantly. “Despite facing these same challenges, Etihad managed to
increase passenger numbers and saw a large growth in our RPK figures. This was helped by the continued expansion of our route network, by the growth of our fleet by 10 aircraft and by the aggressive sales and marketing of our services. “Most importantly, we saw seat factor and yields recover over the latter part of the year, particularly in the premium cabins, where we have invested in creating a world-beating product.” Seat factor through 2009 was 74 per cent, holding steady on the 2008 level. Mr Hogan also highlighted the success of the airline’s cost reduction plan that commenced in 2007. He said: “We reduced our costs per available seat kilometre (CASK) by more than 14 per cent during the year, a sizeable reduction. “We are seeing the results of the implementation of our business strategy over the last three years coming to fruition. An outstanding product, available across a robust and attractive network, delivered by a lean and efficient business - these elements are the recipe for our future success. “By continuing to align Etihad’s growth agenda with Abu Dhabi’s 2030 plan, we believe we have the right strategy to meet those challenges. “Our 2010 performance is already showing positive results, with all major indicators showing strong improvements on January and February of last year. “The market environment remains very challenging and it will require clear focus if we are to continue on our growth path in 2010.” n

Önce Song hanedanını konu eden, Broodway showlarını aratmayan sahne teknikleri, görsel efektler, dekor ve kostümleri ile “ The Romance of the Song Dynsty” adlı müzikali 3000 kişilik kapalı salonda seyrettik.
