EDITOR’S NOTE
Thailand’s Tourism Success Story Thailand was not a much-talked country within the tourism industry during the first few years of Millennial. Bangkok was having a very old airport, no proper roads, traffic was disastrous, there were almost no hotels, partly as a destination some developments around Pattaya, and a little around Phuket. There are no proper airlines to fly to the country other than the Thai airlines and country was welcoming less than 10 million tourists. Thailand welcomed 38 million tourists and received 62 billion dollars of tourism income in 2018. This is a success story. We have seen how this success story is written during our recent visit to TTM Plus tourism fair beginning of June 2019. In this issue, you will read some news presenting parts of that success story. As the summer season starts, we are presenting you Turkey’s entertainment center; Bodrum. Beside tourism news around the world and Turkey, you will read our news coverage from TTM Plus. In addition to all, Turkish readers will find a very interesting article about Chiang Mai; one of the leading travel destination in North Thailand. Happy Holiday Season, Suat Töre

Turkey news was granted to the 22-year-old pianist Can Çakmur in its seventh edition. The 47th Istanbul Music Festival opened with the concert of the young pianist Seong-Jin Cho, winner of the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, and the Tekfen Philharmonic Orchestra, festival’s Opening Concert Orchestra for 2019-2022. The 24-year-old Seong-Jin Cho has risen fast on the international arena since 2015, playing with prestigious orchestras around the world and receiving rave reviews for his albums. The pianist, who made his Turkey debut at the festival’s opening night, reunited with conductor Aziz Shokhakimov after their performance with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra last year. Seong Jin-Cho performed Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. I in C Major, op. 15, whereas Tekfen Philharmonic Orchestra performed Franz Liszt’s Symphonic Poem No.3, ‘Les Préludes’. Istanbul To Be Europe’s City Tourism Hot Spot in Q3 2019 A study undertaken for European Cities Marketing (ECM) by ForwardKeys, which analyses over 17 million flight booking transactions a day, reveals that Istanbul is set to be Europe’s city tourism hot spot in the third quarter of 2019 (July 1st - September 30th). In making its determination, ForwardKeys looked at the growth in airline seat capacity and the growth in long-haul flight bookings to 30 major European cities included in the ECM-ForwardKeys Air Travellers´ Traffic Barometer*. Olivier Ponti, ForwardKeys, VP Insights, said: “Seat capacity is a very strong predictor of visitor arrivals because once airlines have decided to lay on flights, they set out to fill their planes and, as part of their promotional strategy, they can always flex the price to help them do so. Long-haul bookings are another useful indicator because long-haul travellers tend to book earlier, to stay longer and to spend more money. When we looked at both metrics, Istanbul stood out on both counts.” The total number of seats on sale to Europe in the third quarter of the year is more than 262 million, 3.8% up on Q3 2018. Istanbul, with a 5.5% share of the market, is showing a 10.0% growth in capacity and, as of June 2nd, it is showing forward bookings 11.2% ahead thanks to its new mega-hub Istanbul Airport and decreasing concerns about security. Other 8 New Focus | July / August 2019
destinations set to perform impressively include Budapest, which is also showing a 10.0% increase in capacity and forward bookings 5.9% ahead, Valencia, with 8.5% increase in capacity and forward bookings 15.6% ahead and Dubrovnik, with 8.4% increase in capacity and forward bookings 16.2% ahead. If one focuses exclusively on capacity growth, Seville and Vienna, which are 16.7% and 12.6% up respectively, outstrip Istanbul for percentage growth but they do not handle such a large volume of traffic – Seville has a 0.4% share of total seats, whereas Vienna has 3.9%. Other major airports showing impressive capacity growth are Munich, with a 4.3% share of seats, which is seeing a 6.0% increase in capacity and Lisbon, with a 2.7% share, which is looking at a 7.8% capacity increase. New Flight Routes Launched A number of carriers launched flights to Turkish cities. Following the last year's launch of first direct flights between Kyiv (Ukraine) and Izmir by Pegasus Airlines, now Ukraine International Airlines started on the same route with even better flight schedule. Effective June 15, 2019, travelers started to fly direct between Kyiv and Izmir. “With our new flights, Ukrainian tourists will get the opportunity to discover new parts of Turkey. At the same time, passengers from Turkey will be able to visit Ukraine or use UIA’s vast flight network to visit cities of Western Europe and Scandinavian countries with convenient connections at Kyiv Boryspil International Airport”, says Evgeniya Satska, UIA Communication Director. SunExpress, the joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, launched direct flights between Prague (Czech Republic) and Antalya. SunExpress is also starting to fly directly to Oslo, Eindhoven and Göteborg, Europe's favorite destinations from Antalya during the peak summer travel season. On the domestic flights, SunExpress offers direct flights from Antalya to 8 Turkish cities in total. These include: Adana, Izmir, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Kayseri, Samsun, Trabzon and Van. Qatar Airways launched direct flights between Doha (Qatar) and Izmir on May 23. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “We are delighted to launch direct services to www.smpublication.com 9
Turkey news Izmir, a beautiful coastal city and key business hub. This new gateway to Turkey will strengthen Qatar Airways’ already robust presence in the Turkish market, while providing our passengers travelling from Turkey enhanced connectivity to our extensive global route map of more than 160 destinations. Izmir is also home to the country’s second-largest port after Istanbul, and is a major commercial centre, making it a key destination for business travelers.” Three weekly flights to Izmir will be operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, featuring 12 seats in Business Class and 132 seats in Economy Class. Jazeera Airways, Kuwait's leading low-cost airline, has started serving for the first time the coastal city of Bodrum in Turkey with three flights a week. The new Turkish destination is an addition to the three flights a week recently launched to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SAW), and to the existing daily flights to the new Istanbul Airport (IST). Speaking of the new route launch, Jazeera Airways CEO, Rohit Ramachandran, said: “We are very excited to be starting flights to Bodrum during the summer season. It has become an extremely popular leisure destination for the Kuwaiti market. We are also pleased to have increased flights to Istanbul and offer our customers the choice of airport to fly through. Istanbul is a great touristic destination that never ceases to amaze with every visit thanks to its deeply-rooted history and culture.” Turkish Airlines receives its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Boeing announced that the first 787-9 Dreamliner for Turkish Airlines is delivered on June 26. Turkey's flag carrier plans to use the airplane's fuel efficiency, range, reliability and size to operate new nonstop international routes such as Bali, Bogota-Panama, Washington and Atlanta. “Turkish Airlines has been committed to continuously expanding its range of services on and off-ground as it grows in reach and flies to more international destinations than any other carrier in the world. With this goal in mind, we’re thrilled to reach new horizons with the addition of the 787-9 Dreamliner to our fleet flying from our new home, Istanbul Airport,” said M. İlker Aycı, Turkish Airlines’ Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee. “The aircraft’s advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and passenger-centric cabin design will all help us remain 10 New Focus | July / August 2019
the first choice for travelers and provide our loyal flyers across the globe with a best-in-class experience for years to come.” More than 80 customers around the world have ordered more than 1,400 Dreamliners since the program’s introduction, making it the fastest-selling widebody jet in history. The 787 Dreamliner allows airlines to reduce fuel use and emissions by 20 to 25 percent and serve far-away destinations. The combination of fuel efficiency and long range has helped airlines flying the 787 family of airplanes save more than 36 billion pounds (16 billion kilograms) of fuel and open more than 235 non-stop routes. Turkish Airlines’ Dreamliner has seating capacity for 300 passengers, including 270 economy class seats and 30 business class seats. The carrier’s 787 includes long haul economy class seats and business class monuments produced in Turkey by Turkish suppliers. Izmir and Ankara airports join the European airports’ effort to zero emissions by 2050 At the 29th ACI EUROPE Annual Congress in Cyprus – the annual gathering for airport CEOs across Europe TAV Airports signed a landmark commitment to become net zero for their carbon emissions by 2050 at two of its airports, Izmir Adnan Menderes and Ankara Esenboga in Turkey. This commitment was undertaken as part of ACI EUROPE, the trade association for the European airport industry, announcing a Resolution formally committing the industry to achieve net zero by 2050, at the latest. The collective pledge – further undersigned by 194 airports, operated by 40 airport operators across 24 countries - marks a significant step change in the climate action ambitions for the airport industry. Sani Sener, CEO and President TAV Airports said “Sustainability is at the core of our business model at TAV. We strive to create the highest value for our stakeholders while minimizing our impact on the environment. Ankara Esenboga and Izmir Adnan Menderes have achieved Level 3+ Neutrality status for the last three years at the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. We believe that contributing to efforts to counter climate change is our responsibility to future generations. We aim to confirm with the highest standards and best practices in our industry.” www.smpublication.com 11
Turkey news Dr Michael Kerkloh, President of ACI EUROPE and CEO of Munich Airport commented “Europe’s airports have been leading climate action with annual reductions announced every year for the past decade². 43 of them have actually become carbon neutral, supported by the global industry standard Airport Carbon Accreditation. However, today’s commitment brings a new dimension to this – no offsets. Crucially, with its NetZero2050 commitment, the airport industry is aligning itself with the Paris Agreement and the new Climate goal adopted just last week by the EU.” Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC said “Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC said “The IPCC Special Report from last October is unequivocal about the need to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century. We need all sectors of society working towards this ultimate goal. It is therefore encouraging to see the airport industry voluntarily raising its ambitions and we look forward to working with this vital sector.” The deadline of 2050 is aligned with the latest IPCC evidence and the decarbonisation strategy set out by the European Commission and adopted by the Council of the European Union. There are already 3 net zero airports in Europe, Luleå, Ronneby and Visby all operated by Swedavia. New Train Service between Iran and Turkey to boost tourism A new passenger rail service started on Monday with a passenger train leaving capital Tehran for Turkey’s eastern city of Van. The once-weekly train will have a stopover in Iran’s northwestern city of Tabriz before crossing the border. The train ride takes around 24 hours for Tehran-Tabriz-Van train to reach its destination. According to Iran news agency, Iran and Turkey have also agreed to launch direct train services between its capitals; Tehran and Ankara. Iran’s Deputy Minister of Road and Urban Development Saeed Rasooli announced in early June that in addition to the Tehran-Ankara and Tehran-Van trains, tourist trains will be operated between the two neighboring countries. He said Iran and Turkey have finalized an agreement on tariffs on cargo trains traveling between the two countries.

WORLD news Airbus launches The A321XLR Airbus at Paris Air Show has launched the A321XLR to complement its best-selling A321neo Family. The A321XLR thus becomes the next evolutionary step which responds to market needs for even more range, and creates more value for the airlines by bringing 30% lower fuel burn per seat than previousgeneration competitor aircraft. Starting from 2023, the aircraft will deliver an unprecedented Xtra Long Range of up to 4,700nm – 15% more than the A321LR and with the same unbeatable fuel efficiency. With this added range, airlines will be able to operate a lower-cost singleaisle aircraft on longer and less heavily travelled routes – many of which can now only be served by larger and less efficient wide-body aircraft. This will enable operators to open new world-wide routes such as India to Europe or China to Australia, as well as further extending the Family’s non-stop reach on direct transatlantic flights between continental Europe and the Americas. For passengers, the A321XLR’s new Airspace cabin will provide the best travel experience, while offering seats in all classes with the same high-comfort as on long-haul widebody aircraft. The A321XLR has been designed to maximize overall commonality with the A321LR and the rest of the A320neo Family, while introducing minimal changes needed to give the aircraft an Xtra Long Range with increased revenue payload. The changes include: the new permanent Rear Centre Tank (RCT) for more fuel volume; a modified landing gear for an increased maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 101 metric tonnes; and an optimised wing trailing-edge flap configuration to preserve the same take-off performance and engine thrust requirements as today’s A321neo. In particular, the new optimised RCT holds more fuel than several optional Additional Centre Tanks (ACTs) did previously, while taking up less space in the cargo hold – thus freeing-up underfloor volume for additional cargo and baggage on long range routes. The A320neo Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle aircraft with over 6,500 orders from more than 100 customers since its launch in 2010. It incorporates new-generation engines and Sharklet wing-tip devices plus other improvements which together bring double-digit fuel savings over its predecessor, the A320ceo Family. 18 New Focus | July / August 2019

odrum is a lively, popular holiday resort on the Aegean Sea, renowned in antiquity under its ancient name, Halicarnassus.
It’s a town of white houses hung with flowers rising tier on tier against a green hill overlooking a dazzling blue bay guarded by the great medieval castle built by the Knights of Rhodes. Bodrum has an incredibly rich past. Its position in or near so many of the great civilizations and events of ancient history also makes Halikarnassos - Ancient name of Bodrum - an important center. Bodrum is one of the most beautiful cosmopolitan and sophisticated holiday resorts in Turkey. At any time of the day and night, there is always something going on here.
28  New Focus | July / August 2019
One of the unique features of Bodrum as a holiday resort is that in addition to the active recreational opportunities available by day and the unequaled Bodrum nightlife, so many more tranquil bays, beaches and villages are available to enjoy. No other area on the Turkish Aegean coast provides the visitor with the opportunity to experience traditional Turkish life only a few minutes away from the hustle and bustle of a modern tourist center.
Gümbet It is the nearest beach to Bodrum, just 3 km. away. It is now a self contained resort with hotels, shops, bars, discos, banks and everything a tourist needs for 24 hours of non stop fun. Gümbet is also one of the most popular water sports centers with water-skiing, windsurfing, parasailing, etc. available. The popularity of Gümbet has also generated nightlife and the streets of Gümbet vibrate till dawn with the music from fashionable bars, discos and street side-cafes.

There are several beach side cafes providing inexpensive meals and snacks throughout the day. There is also a camping area. Ortakent, which means ‘Midtown’ straddles the main Bodrum-Turgutreis road. The village is unremarkable except for the distinctive 17th century ‘tower houses’ unique to the area and built for defensive purposes. In the early spring the village hosts an annual camel wrestling festival.
Turgutreis 18 km from Bodrum and named after the famous Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis, Turgutreis is a small town that combines a compact town center with several beaches and offers all amenities for tourists.
