Turkey news Both tourist numbers and revenue increases in Turkey Turkey attracted 36.4 million foreign visitors in the first nine months of 2019, marking a 14.5 percent rise, the Culture and Tourism Ministry announced. The Mediterranean resort city of Antalya was the top draw for foreign visitors with a 34.2 percent share, attracting 12.5 million foreigners. Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city by population and a top tourist spot, came in a close second, welcoming 11.3 million foreign visitors from January to September. The northwestern province of Edirne, which borders both Bulgaria and Greece, followed them with 3.4 million foreigners. Ministry data showed that the country welcomed 41.6 million visitors, including Turkish citizens living abroad, up 12.2 percent during the same period. Turkey’s tourism revenue soared 22 percent in the third quarter, up from $11.5 billion in the same period last year, according to Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK). The tourism income jumped by nearly a quarter this July-September to $14.03 billion. The TUİK report said, “While 82.1 percent of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 17.9 percent was obtained from citizens residing abroad,”. Individual expenditures constituted nearly $9.9 billion of the total tourism income in the three-month period, while some $4.1 billion of the revenues came from package tour expenditures, official figures showed. Turkish Government introduces accommodation tax; sector not happy Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Party submitted a new draft law to the parliament, which proposes regulations on the tax system. The draft legislation includes the introduction of an accommodation tax. The new tax will come into force in April next year. According to the new tax, 5-star hotels and resorts will pay 18 Turkish lira (TL) per person per night, 4-star hotels and resorts will pay 12 TL, 3-star 6  New Focus | November / December 2019

hotels will pay 9 TL, 2-star hotels, pensions, motels, apart-hotels, and camps will pay 6 TL, boutique hotels and special licensed accommodation facilities will pay 18 TL. The Hotel Association of Turkey TÜROB Chairman Müberra Eresin said, “As of October 2019, Turkey Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) is established and as part of the law, 7.5 per thousand shares were taken over from hotels’ turnover for funding the agency. Immediately thereafter, the new tax will force the tourism facilities, which have recently started to revive. As the sector, we were not strong enough to handle this load. When both funds and taxes overlap, they will reach a level that will harm the sector,”. Ms. Eresin added that not only the sector couldn’t reach the 2012’s revenue and sales figures in 2019, also hoteliers having difficulty at the loan repayments. Moreover, the room prices are still around 60 percent lower than in 2012. “While taxes on tourism are being reduced all over the world, we face new loads of taxes. This will create a risk of reducing not only foreign guests but also local guests in hotels. The sector should not be interrupted while it is just started to get out of the crisis,” added Ms. Eresin. Vice-Chairman of Turkish Hoteliers Federation (TUROFED) and Chairman of Aegean Touristic Hotels and Investors Associations – ETIK, Mehmet İşler claimed that the sector wanted to be punished with “accommodation tax“. “Mr. Isler asked, “Is the tourism sector punished for success? “. “If this tax is not necessarily to be taken, it should be relative, to be fixed means that the tax comes out of the hotelier’s pocket,” he added. “To introduce new taxes to the sector means to harm and destroy it. The state should pay attention to losses and fugitives, rather than going on to successful, prudent traders who pay their taxes,” Isler added.

We have increased the Ministry’s promotional budget that 8  New Focus | November / December 2019

was 18 million dollars in 2018 to 72 million dollars in 2019 thanks to the change of policy. We aim to raise the promotional budget to 180 million dollars with our Ministry and newly-established Tourism Promotion and Development Agency of Turkey in 2020. We intend to meet the deficit with great promotional budgets of our competitors in tourism that are in use for the studies which are the products of a long-time investment through yearly increments. In that line, we will work to reach a promotional budget of 220 million dollars in 2023. We will increase our tourism incomes thanks to the promotions with Tourism Promotion and Development Agency of Turkey and as our income increases, our promotional budget will expand as well. In line with these objectives, we will diversify our promotional activities on TV, outdoor, magazine, digital and social media in a focused and intensive way. We are doing market researches in target markets to reach the expectations of the visitors and we’re taking place in all channels by diversifying our promotional strategy in accordance with the said researches. We put emphasis on bringing experience-based Turkey portal and digital applications into action. Besides foreign visitors, we will also carry out promotional studies for domestic visitors to improve domestic tourism. We will focus on new product and destination studies, especially in newly-discovered or developing touristic regions. Furthermore, in this sense, we target to increase the package tour rates to 15 – 60 percent by ensuring the security of supply. We’re also expecting an increase in the number of visitors with high spending potential. We will develop new products in this aspect. We will approach gastronomic promotion under a separate title. We will add new ones among our cities registered by UNESCO. We will draw a ‘Taste Map of Turkey’ and create gastronomy routes. We will take actions to improve health tourism and increase the shopping expenses of the tourists. We will focus on many fields ranging from educational tourism to sports, faith tourism, third age target group, congress tourism, festivals, and events and to cruise-yacht tourism. We will continue to open new museums across Turkey. We will increase the number of our items in UNESCO’s World Heritage Lists. We will create routes for land and road cycling bicycle tourism with new culture destinations. We will increase the number of “Bicycle-Friendly Hotels” as well. By keeping digitalization at the center of all our studies, we will provide the experience that the new-generation tourists are looking for before even their trip starts. For faith tourism, we will put ‘Digital Faith Map and Faith Portal of Turkey’ into practice.” www.smpublication.com 9

world news Thomas Cook collapses British travel firm Thomas Cook collapsed on September 23, stranding some 600,000 holidaymakers around the globe. Thomas Cook was the world’s oldest travel firm. It filed for bankruptcy early Monday UK time, ceasing operations for vacations, bookings, and flights. The company went out of business after it failed to secure a rescue package from its lenders in frantic talks that went through the weekend. “Despite huge efforts over a number of months, and further intense negotiations in recent days we have not been able to secure a deal to save our business. I know that this outcome will be devastating to many people and will cause a lot of anxiety, stress, and disruption,” said CEO Peter Fankhauser. China’s Fosun Group, which had led a last-ditch bid to rescue British travel firm Thomas Cook from bankruptcy, said in a statement: “Fosun is disappointed that Thomas Cook Group has not been able to find a viable solution for its proposed recapitalization with other affiliates, core lending banks, senior noteholders, and additional involved parties.” Thomas Cook, which was already the biggest shareholder, would inject £450 million (S$770 million) into the business. In return, the Hong Kong-listed conglomerate was to acquire a 75-per cent stake in Thomas Cook’s tour operating division and 25 percent of its airline unit. Creditors and banks were to inject another £450 million, converting their debt into a 75-per cent stake in the airline and 25 percent of the tour operating unit.

China’s Fosun Acquires Thomas Cook Thomas Cook’s largest shareholder, Chinese conglomerate Fosun International Limited, had issued a public statement saying that the Chinese tourism group would be acquiring the recently bankrupted London-based tourism titan Thomas Cook alongside related hotel brands for a lump-sum of £11 million or $14.25 million aimed at bolstering its expansion strategy in the tourism industry. Owner of Club Med resorts, Fosun will also acquire the 178-year-old British tour group’s hotel chains Casa Cook and Cook’s Club. “The acquisition of the Thomas Cook brand will enable the group to expand its tourism business, building on the extensive brand awareness of Thomas Cook and the robust growth momentum of Chinese outbound tourism,” said Fosun Chairman Qian Jiannong, adding that his company “always believed in the brand value of Thomas Cook”. In July, as part of a rescue plan, Fosun had announced that it would be injecting 450 million pounds together with bondholders and banks that would provide Thomas Cook with the liquidity to trade through to 2020 and invest for the future. The plan collapsed.

Huazhu operates 18 brands across market segments covering the economy to upscale and servicing the needs of business and leisure travelers. Huazhu is also the ninth-largest hotel company in the world by room count and the fifth largest by market capitalization. In 2019, Huazhu entered Japan and Singapore and established its international headquarters in Singapore. Deutsche Hospitality brands complement those of Huazhu, and the merged portfolio will be able to offer a wider range of brand choices to travelers, owners, and franchisees. The acquisition of Deutsche Hospitality accelerates Huazhu’s expansion strategy, driving revenue growth in the upscale and luxury segments in Asia, including China while expanding Huazhu’s international footprint. Deutsche Hospitality, which operates 118 hotels with 36 hotels under development in 19 countries on three continents, has also charted an ambitious growth strategy. In 2019, the almost 90-year-old hotel group announced a worldwide expansion plan to reach 250 hotels by 2024. The acquisition by Huazhu will enhance Deutsche Hospitality ’s ability to achieve this target by strengthening its competitive position in Europe, the Middle East and the African market. The shareholding of the Joint Venture SME Ltd. (Steigenberger Middle East) shall remain unchanged and will continue to operate and expand the Deutsche Hospitality brands with its current partner.

Booking.com: Top Travel Trends for 2020 With a mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, Booking.com predicts that 2020 will be a year of travel exploration like never before, fueled by technology as well as a growing sense of responsibility and deeper connection with the people and places we visit. 1. The rise of the ‘second city’ traveler Second-city travel, meaning the exploration of lesser-known destinations in a bid to reduce over-tourism and protect the environment, will take a leap forward in the year ahead. Over half (54%) of global travelers want to play a part in reducing over-tourism, while 51% would swap their original destination for a lesser-known but similar alternative if they knew it’d leave less of an environmental impact. And to pique their interest, 60% of global travelers would be keen to have access to a service (app/website) that recommends destinations where an increase in tourism would have a positive impact on the local community. 2. Tech-spect the unexpected 2020 will see travelers put key aspects of their decision-making process even more firmly in the hands of technology. It can be overwhelming to decide which corners of our incredible planet to visit or what excursions to choose, but the coming year will see inventive tech inspiring and enabling us to overcome this hurdle with ease. Smart, trusted tech-led recommendations will connect us to a myriad of new experiences that might not otherwise have crossed our path, while also saving time (as well as screen-time) and enabling us to max out every minute of ‘now’ while on vacation. 3. Slo-Mo is the new #FOMO Instead of experiencing the constant fear of missing out (FOMO) and trying to speed through as much as possible, travel in 2020 will be all about taking it slow. In 2020, almost half (48%) of travelers plan to take slower modes of transport to reduce their environmental www.smpublication.com 17

WORLD news impact and six in 10 (61%) would prefer to take a longer route to experience more of the journey itself. Types of transport that play into our desire to take the pace down a notch will also come into their own - from peddle bikes to trams, sleds and boats, as well as our own two feet. In fact, over half (57%) of travelers already don’t mind spending more time traveling to reach their destination if they’re taking a unique mode of transport. Likewise, 64% would be interested in feeling as if they are going back in time by taking a historical train journey (e.g. Flying Scotsman, Orient Express). 4. Discovering the all-amusive escape A fast-paced world means that most of us are often time-poor – a notion that doesn’t start or stop with vacations. Travelers will want to be as time-efficient as possible on vacation, so instead of settling into one theme for the entire vacation, 2020 will see a rise in travelers exploring the ‘all-amusive’, by visiting destinations that offer an array of enriching experiences and attractions. 5. Pets in the priority lane With more than half (55%) of global pet owners saying that their pet is as important to them as their child/ren, it’s no surprise that 2020 looks set to herald a new era in pet-centric vacations. We’ll see travelers putting the needs of their beloved pets well before their own when it comes to selecting where to go, where to stay and what to do. 42% of global pet owners agree that in the coming year they would choose holiday destinations based on whether they can take their pets and 49% would be willing to pay more to stay at an accommodation that’s pet-friendly. 6. Making great memories with ‘grand’ getaways 2020 will be the year of the ‘grand’ as more grandparents will take epic vacations with just their grandkids, leaving the middle generation behind. Almost three-quarters (72%) of grandparents agree that spending time with their grandkids keeps them feeling young and 71% believe that parents need alone time without their children. 7. Race to the reservation The coming year will see travelers put culinary ambitions at the forefront of their travel decision making, with the race to snag that all-important restaurant reservation truly on. The seven in 10 (71%) of global travelers who say that eating locally sourced produce is important to them when on vacation. So get your calendars at the ready because next year travelers will pivot their holiday plans around these destination dining opportunities, looking to indulge before everyone else gets there first, or before the next must-book table appears on the scene. 8. Fast track to long-term travel As retirement looks set to become less and less about reaching a certain age and leaving the workforce, and with increasing numbers actively planning to retire earlier, we’ll see this moment become surprisingly synonymous with ‘adventure travel planning’. Nearly one quarter (23%) of 18 to 25-year-olds are planning to retire before they turn 55 and what they plan to do is also changing. 2020 will see travelers shift their mindset and start to plan big for their future golden years, with nearly two thirds (65%) of global travelers seeing travel as the perfect way to spend that free time.
