Cappadocia Awarded Best Honeymoon Destination 2014 The region of Cappadocia in Turkey has been named ‘Best Honeymoon Destination’ by Lonely Planet in their collection of the world’s hottest trends, destinations and experiences for the year ahead, published in the book Best in Travel 2014. The destinations are selected through a process involving Lonely Planet’s authors, editors and online community then judged by a panel of in-house experts who give each destination in the shortlist a score in line with criteria such as topicality, excitement and “x-factor”. The award was presented to Dr Aysegul Gurgezoglu, director of the London-based Turkish Culture and Tourism Office UK, at World Travel Market (WTM) this week, who said: “I’m thrilled that Cappadocia’s unique qualities have been recognised by Lonely Planet, as it’s a destination that we have been promoting very actively here in the UK. It’s a region that shows yet another facet of fascinating Turkey, a country that has so much worth discovering; so perfect for couples embarking on a new life together.” Lonely Planet writes: “The fairy chimneys of Cappadocia are spectacularly peculiar, a sight that needs to be shared. The region offers plenty of opportunities... but the best way is to wake up before dawn for a balloon ride over the jagged landscape and fantastic dwellings. Post-afternoonnap, climb the stairs up to Uchisar Castle to watch the sunset from the top of the area’s tallest fairy chimney, where Cappadocia mingles with the clouds and everything from Mount Erciyes to the Pigeon Valley is in view.” Cappadocia is home to one of the most mysterious and

extraordinary landscapes in the world, today preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Formed at the centre of a once volcanic region, over time wind and weather have sculpted sensual curves, forming the peaks now known as ‘fairy chimneys’. Neolithic man was the first to carve the soft tufa into inhabitable caves with early Christians following by enlarging natural caves to create underground cities, monasteries and churches. A number of cave hotels in the area provide couples with the unique and historical experience of staying in such an intimate and characterful space.

F AIRLINES Turkish Airlines Gourmet has won Skytrax Awards Turkish Airlines, which has won Skytrax awards for the “World’s Best Economy Class On-board Catering” (2011) and for the “Best Business Class Catering” in 2013, continues to improve its already excellent catering product. Turkish Airlines has completely renewed its inflight catering materials -a significant part of the catering service, in order to further enhance the satisfaction of its customers. The new dishes and implements have been designed by TURKISH DO&CO, Turkish Airlines’ catering partner, for all cabins; Business, Comfort and Economy. The new materials have a modern and elegant design, reflecting Turkish culture. Inspired by the Ottoman and Seljuq motifs, these new components have been designed according to new trends and are especially adapted to the special needs of onboard use. During the presentation of the new catering concept, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board Mr. Hamdi Topçu has stated that: “Turkish Airlines is competing today with its self by upgrading the quality of service. The awards we have won, based on passenger feedback, are the ornaments of our success. We are continuing to work on meeting the expectations of our passengers by constantly innovating to delight and surprise our guests. We are aware that the onboard catering is a significant component for the satisfaction of our passengers and we continue to raise the bar in conjunction with our partner TURKISH DO&CO. Turkish Airlines’ goal is to recreate the atmosphere of a fine restaurant--but in the sky. This is aided by our flying chiefs, greatly appreciated by our passengers.” Turkish Airlines CEO Temel Kotil Ph.D. noted that Turkish Airlines has been named “Best Airline Europe” for three consecutive years, and stated that “Our service quality is the distinguishing mark of Turkish Airlines, separating us from our competitors. We are trying to offer our passengers the best examples of Turkish hospitality while onboard. Our Turkish delight service, which has been recently introduced, has been well-received by our passengers. With the introduction of this new concept, we will share different flavors from Turkish

cuisine with our passengers.” TURKISH DO&CO’s CEO Attila Doğudan has also commented on the new service concept: “We have prepared many surprises for our passengers. No longer will special days require a visit to a fine restaurant because that same experience will be available if you travel in the Business class cabin of Turkish Airlines. After the dinner, you will be able to drink your freshly brewed tea from the “samovar”, in the cups specially designed for our passengers”. Doğudan also stated that in conjunction with the carefully chosen tastes from Turkish and World cuisine, there will be a new emphasis on spices in the new concept menus as they form a distinctive role in Turkish cuisine. The new catering plan of Turkish Airlines was first introduced on the Istanbul-New York sector on 22 October 2013, as a trial application. As of today, the new concept is being used on flights to New York, Guangzhou, Jakarta, Cape Town, Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo, Hong Kong, Washington DC, Seoul, Johannesburg, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Chicago, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Toronto, and Houston.

F HOTELS UNWTO Secretary-General calls for visa facilitation and air transport liberalization

Addressing the Royal Aeronautical Society at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) headquarters, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai called for increased visa facilitation and the liberalization of air transport. Mr. Rifai, the first speaker from outside the aviation industry to give the Assad Kotaite Lecture, highlighted the interdependent relationship between air transport and tourism in his address, Tourism and Aviation: Building Common Policies for Sustainable Growth. He reiterated the need to position both sectors collectively to help stimulate the growth of the overall economy and create opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. “If we are to achieve the forecast rise in international tourist arrivals from 1 billion in 2012 to

1.8 billion in 2030, with all the concomitant economic and social benefits, we must work as one,” Mr. Rifai said. “Increased coordination among airlines, tourism destinations and airport authorities at national level, and the joint work of UNWTO and ICAO at the global level, will help position travel and tourism as a strategic sector with air transport at its core,” he added. Mr. Rifai emphasized market liberalization as a key factor for the development of civil aviation and tourism, citing World Trade Organization (WTO) estimates that show that replacing the most restrictive bilateral air agreements by most liberal ones may increase traffic by over 75%. On visa facilitation, Mr. Rifai stressed that restrictive visa issuance policies and complicated entry formalities are still stifling travel and tourism growth, particularly from emerging economies, which are some of the fastestgrowing source markets for tourism. Supporting visa facilitation will help stimulate the economy and generate employment - as many as 5.1 million additional jobs in the G20 economies by 2015, and 2.6 million new jobs in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies by 2016, according to recent research by UNWTO and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). Other key issues addressed were tourist/consumer protection, intelligent taxation, and the fight against climate change, issues which he maintained were areas of common concern for both the tourism and aviation sectors to achieve a significant impact in promoting sustainable growth and development

Anketteki 2013 turizmine damgasını vuran gelişmelerin neler olduğu sorusuna, AKTOB üyelerinin % 45’i ‘Gezi olayları’ yanıtını verdi.
