F TURKEY NEWS New High Speed Train to Anatolia President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan inaugurated a high speed train link from Istanbul to the Central Anatolian city of Konya on Dec. 17, which cuts journey times by nearly nine hours. Erdoğan himself opened the line at a ceremony in Konya, 460 kilometers southeast of Istanbul, and declared that all travel on it would be free for the first week. The president said the line was the latest step in his multi-
billion dollar drive to modernize Turkey. “For decades, we only sat back and watched developments taking place in the West. We could see high speed trains only on TV and see planes only when we lay down on the ground and looked up to the sky,” Erdoğan said in a televised speech. “But thanks to us, Turkey has gone through a great transformation in 12 years. We have cleared the way for our people,” he added. The Istanbul-Konya journey time on the high speed line is four hours 15 minutes, compared to 13 hours on the old trains. Two departures are planned a day, with tickets starting at 42.5 Turkish Liras ($18). In July he inaugurated the first high speed train line between Istanbul and Ankara, which cut journey times in half to just 3.5 hours. There is already a high speed line between Ankara and Konya.

F WORLD NEWS The First UNWTO Conference on Accessible Tourism in Europe The First UNWTO Conference on Accessible Tourism in Europe addressed how to advance quality, sustainability and competitiveness in accessible tourism with a special focus on cultural heritage and the use of smart technologies. Achieving universal accessibility throughout the tourism value chain is the main call for action of the San Marino Declaration of Accessible Tourism, adopted at the First UNWTO Conference on Accessible Tourism in Europe (San Marino, 19-20 November 2014). “Accessible Tourism for All ranks high amongst the ethical challenges we have identified and which require our permanent attention and guidance”, said the Chairman of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, Pascal Lamy, opening the Conference. ”Advocating for and advancing universal access in travel and tourism is both a question of rights and a question of ethics, a matter of quality and respect, of freedom and nondiscrimination”, he added. Echoing the legitimate right of access to tourism activities by people with disabilities, as established by the United Nations, the San Marino Declaration on Accessible Tourism was adopted unanimously, calling for all stakeholders to ensure universal accessibility in all the components of the tourism value chain. This includes the physical environment, the transportation system and information and communications channels, as well as to strengthen and engage public-private partnerships and other forms of cooperation among entities working in the field of universal accessibility. UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai stressed that “People with disabilities and special needs should be able to actively take part in tourism just as any other traveller. Great strides have been made to advance universal accessibility, particularly in Europe, but there are still many opportunities to be seized. Accessibility for all depends much on the will of all players to work together, and we at UNWTO remain committed to advancing this fundamental agenda and implementing the necessary changes alongside our partners.” While referring to the morphological features of the hilly mediaeval town of San Marino, the Minister of Tourism, H.E.
Mr. Teodoro Lonfernini, pointed out that “San Marino is doing its best to make its territory accessible to as many visitors as possible, while also trying to enable an authentic travel experience to people with special needs”, adding that “if a country like the Republic of San Marino can achieve that, many other States should be able to follow the same path”. The Conference was jointly organized by UNWTO and the Government of the Republic of San Marino in collaboration with Village for All (V4A) and the ONCE Foundation of Spain.

The airlines did not notice a change in the passenger occupancy rate, which remained at 79.5 percent. The available seat kilometers performance – a measure of an
airline flight’s passenger carrying capacity – increased by 16.9 percent, reaching 113.1 billion. Turkish Airlines also recorded 90 billion units of revenue passengerkilometers – a measure of the volume of passengers carried by an airline – from January to October this year, representing a 16.9 percent increase from the previous year.

Atlasjet in $3 bln Provisional Airbus Jet Order Turkey’s Atlasjet has reached a preliminary deal with European planemaker Airbus to buy around 30 aircraft worth $3 billion at list prices as it expands in eastern Europe and central Asia, two people familiar with the matter said. The tentative agreement covers current-generation A321ceo jets, but the number of units and other details have not been finalized, the people said, asking not to be identified because the talks are confidential. Atlasjet declined comment. A spokesman for Airbus, the planemaking unit of Airbus Group, said: “We do not comment on confidential discussions that we may or may not be having with potential customers”. Chief executive Orhan Coşkun told Reuters last month the airline was in the final stage of talks to buy up to 50 airplanes and would make an announcement soon. However, talks continue and industry sources said the number of planes being considered appeared to be closer to 30 and

could end up lower depending on the terms of any final deal. Atlasjet operates a fleet of 19 Airbus planes and flies to about 20 destinations in Turkey, Europe and the Middle East. Its routes include Arbil in northern Iraq, where it has a partnership called Zagrosjet.
Lufthansa & Turkish Airlines Partnership
Lufthansa said talks to make SunExpress, its joint venture with Turkish Airlines, a partner in its new low-cost long-haul Wings concept were progressing well. “The negotiations are progressing. If we do choose to do it with a partner then SunExpress is the likely partner,” Lufthansa Chief Executive Carsten Spohr told analysts and journalists after the group reported third quarter results. Lufthansa in December present ed concept for a new lowcost brand under the ‘Wings’ umbrella for long-haul flights to its supervisory board for approval. The brand could start operations from Germany with Cologne and Munich among airports being considered at the end of 2015 using seven A330 planes. Meanwhile, Lufthansa has lowered its profit guidance for 2015 for the second time this year, due to a stuttering
global economy and falling ticket prices, and said any further strikes could also impact the target for this year. The airline, Europe’s largest by revenue, said it now expected its 2015 operating profit to be “significantly above” the 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion) seen for 2014, compared with a previous forecast for 2 billion. Even before this warning, analysts had on average predicted operating profit of 1.5 billion euros for Lufthansa in 2015, according to a Reuters poll. The airline, which is expanding low-cost operations and reducing costs to better compete with budget carriers and Gulf rivals, is also being affected by inflation in pension costs, swings in oil prices and foreign exchange rates, it said. Weak European currencies mean airlines in the region are seeing less immediate benefit from falling fuel prices than their rivals in the United States. Analysts have also said falling oil prices can indicate a period of weak yields, a measure of pricing for airlines, because a drop in the price of crude is often linked to a weakening of the global economy. Analyst Robin Byde at brokerage Cantor Fitzgerald said given that airlines should benefit from reduced fuel costs next year, the lowered guidance is likely related to airlines adding more seats on longhaul routes and resulting pressure on yields. Airlines generally have to lower prices to fill more seats. Chief Financial Officer Simone Menne said yields would be stable rather than rise in 2015 and Lufthansa would react by reducing capacity plans. “We still have a yield pressure, not in Europe, but in other regions, especially North America,” she told journalists. Yields fell a currency-adjusted 3.9 percent in the third quarter, after a drop of 2.6 percent in the previous quarter.

Overall, a total of 267 flights will be made on a weekly basis to 48 foreign destinations in 12 different countries from Antalya,” the company said in a written statement.
SunExpress will also operate flights to Brussels, Rome, Milan, Toulouse, Baku and London from İzmir in addition to its existing 30 foreign destinations. Strabo and Pausanians tell the story of the settlement: Androklos, son of Kodros ( the King of Athens), and his friends who were about to migrate to Anatolia, could not decide on the location of the new city they were going to establish . Ephesus They consulted the oracle of Apollo, which told them to establish their new city at the location which would be indicated by fish and a boar. Androklos and his friends who came to the region wanted to cook fish, but the fish they were frying jumped off the pan, scattering ames that set the dry bushes on fire. A boar ran out of the burning bushes and Androklos started to chase the boar, caught it and killed it. Convinced that the prophesy of the oracle had come true, Androklos and his friends established their new city in this location. And Ephesus existed here for 400 years and was ruled by Androklos and his descendents. When Androklos died during a war with the Carians he was buried near the Magnesia Gate and heroon ( a shrine dedicated to a deified person) was built on the site. Now make your wayto Cumhuriyet Square (known locally as heykel) and stroll along Ataturk Avenue to koza park where outdoor cafes are set among flowers and fountains. Walking west from the Ulu Mosque you arrive at Hisar, an old and picturesque quarter of Bursa. YHT’de alkol servisi kalmadı Yüksek hızlı trenin (YHT) AnkaraEskişehir hattında da alkol satışı kalktı. Böylece YHT’nin hiçbir hattında artık alkol servisi kalmadı. YHT restoranlarını işleten Beşler Şirket yetkilileri talep eksikliği nedeniyle böyle bir karar aldıklarını belirttiler. Şirket yetkilileri Hürriyet’e, Ankara-Konya hattında daha önce talep eksikliği nedeniyle alkol servisini kaldırdıklarını söylediler.
Ankara-Eskişehir hattında da aynı gerekçeyle böyle bir karar aldıklarını kaydeden yetkililer şu bilgileri verdi: “Ankara-İstanbul hattı alkolsüz başlamıştı. Şu an alınan kararla yüksek hızlı trenlerde alkol servisi kalktı. Ancak konvansiyonel hatlarımızda alkol servisi devam ediyor. Uzun hatlarda bir değişiklik yok. Bu karara ekonomik olarak bakmak gerekir.”
