F TURKEY NEWS European Union offers Turkey money and visa-free travel The European Union and Turkey agreed on Sunday to speed up the country’s EU accession process if Ankara regularizes refugee flow to Europe ‘as much as possible’. Chapter 17 on economy will be opened on December 14 and visa-free travel for Turkish citizens is expected to be implemented in October 2016 if Ankara meets certain criteria specified in an agreed roadmap. The European Union will also give 3 billion euros ($3.1 billion) in funding to meet the needs of more than 2 million Syrian refugees in the country. “These 3 billion euros are not given to Turkey. This amount is given to Syrian refugees; the main philosophy is burden sharing,” Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said at a joint press conference with European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker following a summit in Brussels on Sunday.
The Cyprus issue remains a major obstacle to Turkey’s accession plans, as several chapters are blocked by the Greek Cypriot administration.
Russia to suspend visa-free travel agreement with Turkey Russia is suspending its visa-free regime with Turkey from January 1, 2016, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday. The announcement comes in response to the downing of a Russian warplane by the Turkish Air Force earlier this week. The suspension, which will make it harder for Russians to travel to Turkey, is likely to have a significant negative impact on Turkey’s economy. Addressing a press conference in Moscow on Friday, Lavrov said: “We will suspend the visa-free agreement between Turkey and Russia from Jan. 1, 2016.” Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus has said Turkey and Russia will not sacrifice their bilateral relations because of the recent downing of a Russian aircraft which violated Turkish airspace. “We wish this crisis to not grow bigger, not to go further, and hope it will be dealt with through mutual negotiations within a short time,” he said.

Kenyan Elias Kemboi Chelimo and Ethiopian Amane Gobena runners won the men’s and women’s race, respectively, while a Turkish athlete came to the stage at third place, the first time for 20 years. Chelimo finished the race with the time of 2 hours, 11 minutes, 13 seconds, as the runner up Evans Kiplagat, also a Kenyan, finished with 2 hours, 12 minutes, 47 seconds. Men’s third place was also achieved by a Kenyan, Silah Kipkemboi Limo, as he came in at 2 hours, 13 minutes, 57 seconds. Chelimo, who received $50,000 for finishing first, said his timing was a little short of a record but he was happy to have done his best. Meryem Erdoğan, the third place winner of the race, finished the marathon at 2 hours, 46 minutes, 38 seconds, thus marking the first Turkish athlete to make it to the podium in the last 20 years. Bekir Karayel, who was the best scoring Turkish athlete at the marathon, came in sixth. Citizens who did not wish to run but rather have a nice time walking over the Bosphorus Bridge opted for the “Public Run,” a track around 8 kilometers on which people cycled or even sat down while on the bridge and had a little snack. Commenting on this year’s theme, İsmail Özbayraktar, the general manager of the Istanbul Municipality’s Spor A.Ş., said the country had seen the worse example of violence against women. “While we run for the love of Istanbul, we will also say stop violence against women,” said Özbayraktar.

Minister also noted that 88 percent of total projected completed which includes 115 kilometers of connection roads. Yıldırım said, “In this state, the bridge is estimated to operate in the first half of 2016, in April or May”. Istanbul, as being the World’s Top 10 Convention Destination, hosted around 130 international conventions with 75.864 delegates in 2014 (ICCA) and over 20% of them were Medical. By the end of November 2015, Istanbul welcomed over 40.000 delegates and almost 45% of the delegates were part of Medical Conferences. One of the important reason of this success is that the number of school of medicines. Istanbul is home to 17 faculty of medicine in its 53 universities to name a few; Istanbul University and Marmara University as being the most important universities in this field. Istanbul’s medical infrastructure also includes 233 hospitals with 32K bed capacity which all makes Istanbul a unique meeting point for Medical Conferences.
“The numbers in 2016 seems even higher. Istanbul have already confirmed 47 international congresses for 2016 and figures shows that 40% of the delegates will be part of medical congresses,” said General Manager of Istanbul CVB, Ozgul Ozkan Yavuz. “We are expecting for the figures to be much higher in coming months. We are pleased with the quantity and quality of the medical congresses that we held and will be hosting. Just to name few this year we hosted Association for the Study of the Liver -APASL Meeting with 4.000 delegates, European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation –EBMT with again 4.000 delegates. For the upcoming years, we are excited to be hosting the European Society of Cardiology with approx. 2.000 delegates, WFNS World Congress of Neurosurgery with 8.000 delegates and World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery –WPCCS with over 3.000 delegates. As Istanbul CVB, we are aiming to have stronger collaborations with local medical associations and strengthen our position by hosting even more medical congresses in our city,” added Mrs. Yavuz. Turkey is now the 6th Top Medical Tourism Destination in the world. Hundreds of thousands of foreign patients each year are now travelling to receive a treatment in private hospitals in Turkish cities, especially in Istanbul. From eye surgery to dental treatment, plastic surgery to hair transplant, Istanbul’s medical infrastructure, includes 233 hospitals with 32K bed capacity. Joint Commission International’s (JCI) accredited 29 hospitals which equals to 4% of all JCI accredited health care organizations in the world which are operating in Istanbul including Acibadem Hospital and MedicalPark Hospital.
Istanbul scores best among the biggest European city destinations A new study reveals the success of tourism in Istanbul, Turkey. The study, which analyzed 45 cities in Europe, compared the growth orientation of Europe’s major city destinations. As the short city break has been able to establish itself as the preferred holiday of choice in Europe over the last few years. The report also confirms that the upward trend remains unabated and that tourism as a whole continues to significantly outperform European economies with city tourism performing best. According to the new Roland Berger study “European City Tourism 2015”, Istanbul scores best among the biggest European city destinations. The city of Istanbul leads the cluster 1 cities, followed by Amsterdam, Paris, London and Vienna. Istanbul is also the fastest growing city in terms of overnight stays growth, followed by Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Moscow. The Roland Berger 2015 study divided the 45 cities under scrutiny into 3 clear cluster groupings. The first cluster encompassed 13 cities with more than 10 million overnight stays, the second, 17 cities with between 2 and 10 million overnight stays and the third, 15 cities with fewer than 2 million overnight stays.

Istanbul, Amsterdam, Paris, London and Vienna took the top five places in the first cluster. Worthy of note too was Berlin, which continues to show strong growth in overnight stays. Brussels, Copenhagen and Zurich followed suit in the second cluster with Dubrovnik, Luxemburg and Lausanne respectively taking the top three places in the third and final cluster. The evaluation model used by the study team also favored those cities demonstrating clear growth in the categories overnight stays and bed capacities as well as measuring the received revenue per available room. Vladimir Preveden, Partner at Roland Berger and author of the study says, “After our first study conducted in 2011, Istanbul has experienced dramatic levels of growth in two key areas, namely in the increase in overnight stays as well as in the growth of bed capacities.” The British and French capitals continue to lead the top cluster in terms of the total number of overnight stays in 2014. The French capital demonstrated a high level of flight accessibility (only being surpassed by London) and high figures for value creation as measured by the achieved revenue per available room – due in part to the continued popularity of Paris as the leading congress location among the first cluster cities. The same factor contributed as well to Brussels’ success at the head of the second cluster. Excellent accessibility by plane and strong growth in bed capacity were also major contributory factors. In the third cluster, Dubrovnik featured the strongest growth in overnight stays. “Dubrovnik has reached its limits of growth in tourism when looking at the size of the city (as indicated by the very high tourism density), and considering that ongoing growth is being driven by the unsustainably high influx of cruise ship tourists,” said Preveden.

Mount Erciyes & winter sports
M
ount Erciyes (Erciyes Dağı) -derived from the ancient Greek name Argaeos; Latinized as Argaeus by the ancient Romansis a massive stratovolcano located 25 km to the south of Kayseri in Turkey. Erciyes is the highest mountain in central Anatolia, located within the ancient region of Cappadocia, with its summit reaching 3,916 metres (12,848 ft). It is considered to be the highest peak of the Anti-Taurus mountain range, a northeastern extension of the Taurus Mountains to the south, and belongs to the Alpide belt in Eurasia The volcano is heavily eroded, but may have erupted as recently as 253 BC, as may be depicted on Roman era coins. Strabo called the mountain Argaeus he wrote that the summit was never free from snow and that those few who ascended it reported seeing both the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south in days with a clear sky. The first documented successful climb was

performed by William John Hamilton in 1837. There are, however, some historic writings and symbols on the rocks at the summit, indicating earlier human presence there. There are two caves near the summit tower, of which at least one must have been expanded by humans. It is supposed that monks in historic times have visited the summit several times. There are winter sports facilities on the mountain, usually accessed from nearby Kayseri. Because Erciyes was always snow-covered, the Hittites (second millennium to 1200 BC) called it “Harkasos” or “White Mountain.” The Hittite pantheon included a number of mountain gods, including Erciyes. From the region of Imamkulu in Cappadocia, a 13th century BC Hittite rock carving depicting a storm god above three mountain gods, furnishes proof of the Hittite veneration of Cappadocian volcanoes. In fact, a man-made tunnel discovered near the summit of Erciyes might have been used for worshipping the mountain.

It is highly probable that a link exists between the Greek legend of Typhon and Zeus and the volcanoes of Cappadocia. According to the legend, Typhon was an enormous monster with horrible dragon heads, countless coiled serpents for legs and arms, and a mouth emitting flaming rocks. Volcanic eruptions were said to be the battle between Typhon and Zeus, the only god who stood firm against the monster from Cilicia (of which Cappadocia was a part). A Hittite bas-relief from Malatya dating from 1000 BC portrays the weather god (prototype of Zeus) slaying a coiled serpent. Flames and volcanic bombs issue from the serpent’s body, which might symbolize volcanoes. In ancient times Erciyes was known as “Argeus” and was mentioned by many historians, including the famous 1st century geographer Strabo, who claimed one could see the “Black Sea” and “Mediterranean Sea” from the top of Erciyes. Although Strabo erroneously identified these bodies of water, his comments nevertheless indicate that large lakes existed nearby in central Anatolia. He further described Erciyes and the surrounding area as having vast marshes emitting fire and smoke. During Roman times most of the coins minted in Kayseri had images of Erciyes, since the early Hittite cult of mountain worship merged with the Roman veneration of their emperors and Zeus (Jupiter). Numerous statues from that area also depict Erciyes and demonstrate the degree to which it was venerated by the people of Cappadocia. In much later times the renowned 16th century Turkish architect Sinan, a native of Kayseri, was inspired by Erciyes’s conical form.
This influence can be seen in his masterpiece, the Suleymaniye mosque in Istanbul, whose silhouette reflects the conical shape of Erciyes.
The Activities suggested for Erciyes Even though alpine skiing is by far the best known and also the most popular winter sport worldwide, there is a whole range of other activities, which are highly popular and are attractive to different age groups and even different income groups. Whereas alpine skiing is not an inexpensive activity because it requires sophisticated equipment, good clothing and an excellent infrastructure (ski lifts, snowmaking, ski slopes, etc.), there are other activities such as sleigh rides, tobogganing, cross country skiing or just walking in the fresh and crisp winter air, which are NewFocus

less expensive and therefore more easily affordable for target groups with lower income. In societies with a high intensity of winter sports, such as Central and Western Europe, North America and Northeast Asia, it has been an experience that people go through several phases of sports activities in their live span, starting in childhood with the simple joys of tobogganing, ice skating, various fun activities or just playing in the snow, progressing to alpine skiing for young people and young adults, to cross country skiing at a later stage of life. All activities are considered to be particularly healthy and therefore recommended from a medical point of view for all age groups. Thus it is a strong recommendation of this Master Plan, that Erciyes Mountain should be created as a truly universal winter sports resort for the whole family and with many activities for all age groups. The Erciyes resort is particularly attractive because the local people can enjoy themselves or experience something original and exhilarating on the mountain. Therefore, the main aim of the facilities to be developed is to make possible a whole range of experiences. Hence, before describing the various facilities to be constructed in two main phases, the range of activities that can be enjoyed, will be explained below.
Winter Sports Activities Alpine Skiing Alpine Skiing or downhill skiing is a recreational activity and a sport, which evolved from cross-country skiing when ski lift infrastructure was developed at mountain resorts. This type of winter sport is still the most popular among fans of mountain and snow. It is popular wherever the combination of snow, mountain slopes and a sufficient tourist infrastructure can be

found. Furthermore, Alpine Skiing is a major Olympic discipline. All the different elements like the thrill of the downhill, the technique of the slalom, the style of the giant slalom, the speed of the super-G and the versatility of the combined have turned Alpine Skiing and its various disciplines into the most fascinating and practiced of winter sports. Alpine Skiing comprises also a number of game forms such as snowblading, big foot, freeriding, firn gliders, etc. Target Groups: All Location: All ski lifts, off-piste terrain
Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a board sport, which is similar to skiing but was inspired by surfing and skateboarding. By now it is a very common winter sport throughout the world. Snowboarding became an Olympic discipline in 1998 and is one of the most spectacular kinds of sports. It is a symbol of freedom and fashion, fascinating especially to the young. Target Groups: Teenagers, students and people up to 30 years of age Location: All ski lifts, off-piste terrain
Telemark Skiing
Ski Touring
Telemark skiing is also known as ‘free heel skiing’. Unlike in Alpine skiing, the skis used for telemarking have a binding that only connects the boot to the ski at the toes, just as in crosscountry skiing. Telemark turns are led with the heel flat on the outside ski, while the inside ski is pulled beneath the skier’s body with a flexed knee and raised heel. Telemark-ski-fans appreciate in particular the intense perception of the body, the harmony of the movements and the feeling to be one with the mountains. Target Groups: Those who seek sporty alternatives, with a strong appreciation for nature experience Location: All ski lifts, off-piste terrain
Ski touring offers many aspects. Some enjoy walking and trekking in untouched nature. For others, the emphasis is on training their bodies by walking up a mountain as quickly as possible with skis that stick due to the attachment of climbing skins. Those who seek untouched powder snow for unrivalled skiing experience, appreciate ski touring. Target Groups: All age groups, those who especially value nature experience, physical demanding. Location: Areas to the north and west of the mountain are well suited
Freestyle Skiing Freestyle Skiing describes a number of disciplines that require high acrobatic skills. The more traditional forms are mogul skiing and ski acrobatic in the air and on snow. Recently, freestyle skiing was relabelled as “new school” and comprises events such as half-pipe, big air, slope style and skiercross. Target Groups: Sporty, young, adrenaline seeking Location: At Kabak Tepe Develi II, a snow fun park is planned with half pipes, jumps, rails etc.

Helicopter Skiing
Mountains and glaciers, deep-snow and powder-snow tracks, untouched nature and an unforgettable experience, is what heliskiing offers. The helicopter takes ski enthusiasts high up to remote mountain peaks, from where they ski / snowboard down in untouched snow. military throughout Scandinavia. It was first included in the Olympic Games in 1960. A Biathlon competition consists of a race in which contestants ski around a cross-country track, and where the total distance is broken up by either two or four rounds of shooting, half in the prone position, the other half standing. Snow Kiting
It is a fairly new type of winter sport that can be practiced on snow-covered meadows, wide-open fields or even on frozen lakes. The snow sailor stands on any type of sled, skis, snowblades, free skates or a snowboard to control a kite. Winds up to 2 to 3 Beaufort fly a kite and give the rider a highspeed sensation. Target Groups: Sporty and young Location: The lake and the flat area around the lake are ideal. Also the wind and weather conditions should be very suitable on the Erciyes
Sledge riding is fun and a social experience for adults and children. Often children simply walk up the mountain and go down with their sledges. However, sledge riding is also possible using ski lifts. In this case it is highly recommended to prepare a tobogganing track and separate it from the skiing area. Sledge riding is a lot of fun also at night with flood lights, including a stop in a restaurant or an alpine hut. Target Groups: All Location: Kabak Tepe Develi I and II Zümrüt I and II
Snow Tubing Tubing is the activity of riding an inner tube on snow but also on water or most recently through the air. Due to their shape the tubes themselves are also known as “donuts” or “biscuits”. They can be used in flat terrain for small children (see Kids Park below), in especially (snow) built tubing runs, on the slopes, pulled below a snowmobile, etc. Target Groups: Children and families Location: Kabak Tepe Develi I and II Zümrüt I and II

F Cover Story Air Board
It is a real delight: gliding through a beautiful landscape, swirling up fresh snow and letting pursuers disappear in a big cloud of snow. Ice-Skating
The Air Board is a synthetic high-tech material filled with air. Air boarders lie on their belly on the board, their head first, looking down the slopes. The feeling of the speed is extraordinary. The board can be steered by shifting the weight of the body. As the body is only close above the ground, injuries are rare. Target Groups: Young and sporty, adrenaline seeking Location: Kabak Tepe Develi I and II Zümrüt I and II
Snow Rafting

Snowmobile
Walking in the glimmering winter landscape can be fascinating. A special form is snowshoe hiking, which makes people mobile also in powder snow. With snowshoes it is possible to experience places, where the only footprints found are those of animals and winter birds. Furthermore, with torches at night it is a unique experience. F WORLD NEWS Dream Destinations for expats in 2016
InterNations, the world’s leading social network and information site for people who live and work abroad, announced what destinations expats around the world are dreaming of moving to. Asked to more than 14,000 expats, the survey finds that many nationalities seem to be dreaming of home instead of exotic destinations and almost half of the most popular 50 cities among expats are located in Englishspeaking countries. New York came out on top, closely followed by London, Barcelona, Sydney and San Francisco. Also in the top 10 are Paris, Singapore, Dubai, Amsterdam and Rome. Although New York is the most popular destination among
expats in general, responses vary widely according to such factors as gender, age group, and nationality. Both men and women prefer the “Big Apple” to all other places worldwide, but the lower ranks of their respective top 10 vary: While women dream of moving to Rome (#7 for female respondents), Berlin (#9) or Cape Town (#10), these three cities are missing from the ten favorites among the male participants. For the latter, Singapore (#5), Dubai (#7), and Vancouver (#9) turn out to be more desirable destinations of choice. Age also plays an important part in determining a city’s popularity: everybody’s darling New York is especially beloved among expatriates in their late 20s. Younger expats aged 25 or below have a preference for Tokyo, which does far better among this age group than among older participants. Mature expats, on the other hand, are longing for the sunny tropics: compared to the total survey population, the 50+ generation is particularly fond of Bangkok and Honolulu as the dream destinations for best agers. Many nationalities seem to be dreaming of home instead of exotic destinations: For Canadian respondents, the city of their dreams is Vancouver, with Toronto following on fifth place. Next to New York (#1), Sydney and Melbourne rank second and third, respectively, among Australian expats, and Amsterdam is the third-favorite city of Dutch expatriates, right after New York (#1) and Singapore (#2). Other respondents would simply prefer to move within their adopted country: those living in the US, for instance, call San Francisco their dream destination. Expats in Australia would opt for a life in Sydney first, while expatriates living Italy cannot resist the manifold charms of Rome.

Seychelles invites the world to participate its 2016 carnival
The Seychelles Tourism Board has announced that the carnival of carnivals, Carnaval International de Victoria, celebrating its sixth year will be held between 22 and 24 April 2016. The 2016 edition of the island’s Carnaval International de Victoria set to continue to bring together the different cultures and people from around the world to one place. “Nothing is more uniting, and nothing promotes social cohesion more than ‘festivals’ to which all people contribute” said Minister Alain St.Ange, the island’s Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture following discussions with Claire Holder of the Notting Hill Carnival of the UK on their participation once again. Minister St.Ange announced that the Celebration of “National Unity” will be the theme of Carnival 2016 in Seychelles. This spectacular event held over three days in the heart of the
Seychelles capital Victoria was baptised under the theme ‘the melting pot of cultures’. Since 2011, the carnival has received great visibility with the representatives from top media houses coming from Europe, Middle East, Americas, Asia and the Indian Ocean. Over the past five years, the carnival has been known to be the biggest cultural manifestation in Seychelles, bringing together the best carnivals of the world to its shores such as the Brazilian group, the Notting Hill Carnival Roadshow Company of the UK , Düsseldorf carnival of Germany, the Italy Carnival, the Indonesian Carnival to name but a few. Cultural Troupes from the Community of Nations have also descended on the islands to parade alongside with delegations of the best carnivals of the world. The carnival celebrated its fifth anniversary last year where again top international dignitaries graced the three-day event with their presence. The Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria remains a simple celebration of diversity and is a very important catalyst for conflict resolution and togetherness, and an instrument for telling the history of globalisation as it impacts on tourism destinations. “You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one…this is why we are inviting our partner countries, International Carnivals, Cultural Troupes from the Community of Nations and also from the Seychelles itself all government ministries, non-government organisations, the business community and tourism trade partners to take part in the upcoming sixth Carnaval International de Victoria” Minister Alain St.Ange said.
The best countries for expats 2015
Many expats search for the perfect balance between work and life. InterNations, the world’s leading social network and information site for people who live and work abroad,
announced the results of its recent survey about the best countries for expats. Malta ranks first in the Expat Insider 2015 survey for overall job satisfaction, with seven in ten expats generally satisfied and 27 percent even completely satisfied, compared to a global average of only 16 percent. In terms of career prospects, only the USA and the United Kingdom rank higher. Other popular destinations for those in the search of an interesting job and good career opportunities are China, Mozambique, Luxembourg and Poland. The lower end of the Job & Career ranking is dominated by European countries: Out of 64 countries overall, Italy, Portugal and Greece — all of them suffering economically — offer the least favorable job opportunities for foreign residents. Tunisia extends state of emergency to 2016 Tunisian government has extended a state of emergency from December 24 to February 21, following a November suicide bombing, the presidency said. The presidency statement also said the decision to extend the state of emergency was made after consultations with the prime minister and parliament speaker, which is expected to provide more powers to the presidency and armed forces. Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi declared a state of emergency in the
country and a curfew in the capital Tunis last month, after a bus carrying presidential security personnel was targeted in a bomb attack. The country has suffered from violence, since overthrowing its longtime dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, during the “Arab Spring.” DAESH had claimed two earlier terror attacks in Tunisia, the National Bardo Museum attack in March, killing 22 people and the resort hotel attack in Sousse in June, killing 38 tourists.
