We should Protect Nature Tourism is to discover nature. The start of tourism movements is the travel act to discover the beauties of this planet. Listen music of waves in Portofino, enjoy a romantic sunset on your honeymoon in Maui Island, watching the beauties of Bosphorus scene while tasting unique Turkish food, increase your adrenaline by climbing top of the Himalayas, discover nature architecture of Cappadocia with a balloon ride, underwater beauties of Maldives, dance of water at Niagara or Igassu, scenic view of rocks at Copper or Grand Canyon...... To discover many natural beauties in this planet is tourism. However increasing population and consumption change the balance of nature. When destruction of nature by humans is added, the response of nature to that becomes harsher. Eruption of volcanoes that affect continents, climate changes caused by hole in the ozone layer, the floods destroying countries, flooding, or the opposite running out of water at rivers, lakes ... Tourism is not only the peace between humans; tourism is also the peace with nature!

Interview 5 Million German Travelers may Visit Turkey in 2010 During IMEX, we had chance to ask questions about German market to Mr. Raci Karaca who is the Director of Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry Frankfurt office. Mr. Karaca, can you present German market to us? KARACA: German market is a locomotive for Turkish tourism industry. While rivals in the industry facing declines in last years, Turkey closed years with increase. For instance, Turkey recorded a 1% increase in tourism despite the global financial crisis. Many rivals saw double digit decrease. We are happy to start year with increase in tourism trend. Statistics show that German market will continue to grow in coming years. Turkey will increase its market share. Number of reservations at tour operators confirms it. What is your forecast for this year? KARACA: Last year, 4,5 million German tourists visited Turkey. With the expected 10% growth, 5 million of German tourists may visit Turkey in 2010. Important thing here is that there could be increases and decreases according to years but if we can close the worst years with an increase, it gives us big pleasure. And I believe that this trend will continue on next years. What is the position of Turkey in MICE tourism? What are your thoughts about fair and how you see future after IMEX? KARACA: Turkey became active in tourism both in MICE and in leisure tourism later than many of its competitors. As you may now some countries stated themselves as a tourism destination in 1800s, on the other hand, Turkey was attracting only 200-300 thousand tourists in 1980s. Thus, we understand that in such a short time we closed a big gap. And now number of tourist arrivals to Turkey is above 25 million annually. At the same time, we passed many countries in this field. After promotion of general tourism, now it is time to present details of it. In every occasion, we say that Turkey has not only one feature to promote. From summer to winter tourism, city to congress tourism, Turkey has many alternatives to fulfill tourists’ needs. When it comes to detailing, we need more concentration and intense study on the subject. Unfortunately, position of Turkey in congress tourism is not as good as our position in general tourism however there is a promising growth in this category of tourism. 3 to 5 years before, Turkey ranked at 35th place in world meetings destination. Now, Turkey arrives to 18 or 19th place. Needless to say that this position won’t satisfy us. Because our pie in the industry is less than 1%, we can capture around 5% levels. This is our primary target. As you may know IMEX exhibition is a very important event, which is related with the congress tourism. From 150 countries, 3,500 participants are attending IMEX this year. We meet here with industry players and promote our products, services, cities, regions. I believe that this year we have a larger stand. Are you happy with this year’s presence? What is the budget for IMEX? KARACA: IMEX is a very specific fair. We should not put it in same category with other fairs. Rent for same size stand (350 sqm) is varying between 50-150 thousand in general tourism fairs but here rent for 350sqm stand we paid is 350 thousand euro. The stand construction costs some 100 thousand euro. Totally our presence here costs around 500 thousand euro. On the other hand, here 8,000 people in 3 days are deciding travel of millions of people who consumes much more that a leisure traveler. Therefore we must perfectly address stand visitors and find answers, solutions to their questions, and promote Turkey’s meeting products and services in the best possible way that Turkey can host top international congress and conventions. n

Cities of Mediterranean: The biennials of art from Athens, Istanbul and Marrakech in Sicily International Istanbul Biennial is proud to participate in “The Cities of the Mediterranean”, a project that will involve major Mediterranean cities in a series of events, aiming to highlight issues of identity and to represent the art, culture, economic and production systems of the region. The project is organized by Riso, Museo d’Arte Contemporanea della Sicilia, and the Fondazione Campania dei Festival, under an agreement between the Sicilian Region, the Region of Campania, and MISE (Ministry of Economic Development). The exhibition “What Happens to the Hole When the Cheese Is Gone?” is in direct dialogue with the key themes and trajectories of the 11th Istanbul Biennial “What Keeps Mankind Alive”, but on the other hand, it also immediately suggests the dubiousness, and even the impossibility of recreating the original exhibition. “What Happens to the Hole When the Cheese Is Gone?” tries to oppose the idea of a Biennial overview. It rather proposes a kind of discontinued journey that reveals some of the crucial relations that took part in the process of its inception. The artists who are participating in the exhibition “What Happens to the Hole When the Cheese Is Gone?” are; Nevin Aladağ, Vyacheslav Akhunov, Yüksel Arslan, Zanny Begg, Lidia Blinova, Anna Boghiguian, KP Brehmer, CANAN, Etcétera, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Igor Grubi, Nilbar Güreş, Sharon Hayes, Hamlet Hovsepian, Sanja Ivekovi, Jesse Jones, Michel Journiac, Avi

ardin is a city in southeastern Turkey. The capital of Mardin Province, it is known for its Arab-style architecture, and for its strategic location on a rocky mountain overlooking the plains of northern Syria. Mardin has a very mixed population, Kurds, Turks, Assyrian/Syriacs and Arabs all represent large groups. There is also a small Armenian community in the region. The city is located on the slope of a hill looking down south to the Mesopotamian plains. Mardin is on the rail and highway routes connecting Turkey to Syria and Iraq. According to a hearsay, the history of the city dates as far back as the Flood. The city lived under the rule of the Hurri-Mitani, Hittites, Surs, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Arabs and the Seljuk Turks. Later, the Mardin branch of the Artuklu Kingdom called “Tabaka Ilgaziyye” was established and the city flourished during this time. Historically many different names were used for Mardin. These include Erdobe, Tidu, Merdin, Merdo, Merdi, Merda, Merde, “Eagle’s Nest”, “Birds’ Nest”, Maridin and finally Mardin Mardin’s cultural diversity is further enriched by the deep-rooted culture of various communities including the oldest Christian community, the Suryani. different parts of the world. It is a candidate for UNESCO’s List of “Cities of World Heritage.” Submitting, protecting and transferring cultural richness for the next generations require a big importance Mardin has an enormous historical, cultural and architectural richness. The fortress, Kasimiye Medresse, Zinciriye Medresse and Grand Mosque are important historical sites around the city. Other historical assets in the area worth seeing include Dayrul-Zeferan Monastery and Harizm Medresse. Dating from 1385, the Sultan Isa Medresse is an interesting, beautiful Turkish monument with its magnificent carved portal. The Kasim Pasa Medresse, is also significant for its dome of beautiful stonework and the Ulu (Grand) Mosque with its well-decorated minaret, is another sightseeing spot. The best examples of Artutid architecture can be seen at Kiziltepe, 21 kilometers south of Mardin, with the 13th century Ulu Mosque with its fine mihrap relief and beautifully decorated portal. At Hasankeyf which is on the borderline with Batman province, you will see the ruins of the ancient 12th century capital of the Artutids. The bridge which once connected the two parts of the city over the Tigris (Dicle) river and the palace, are others. Hasankeyf will be completely flooded when they will finish the nearby dam, a part of GAP Project. The 15th century Zeynel Bey Mausoleum
Mardin, A City of
Tolerance nearby, is attractively decorated with blue tiles. Deyr’ul Zafaran Monastery is a Syriac monastery 9 kilometers to the east of Mardin, built in the 9th century. At present, it is a visit place and a shelter for impoverished Syriacs. The monastery used to be a religious centre for the Syriac until 1932. One of the biggest of many monasteries existing in the region, Deyr’ul Zafaran has 52 Syriac Patriarchs buried here. The secret section for worshipping called “mahzen” is the oldest part of the monastery. The monastery was enlarged with additional sections built later. Around the structures which form a trinity with Deyr’ul Zafaran, Church of Virgin Mary and Mar Yakup Monastery, there are three fortresses built for protecting the trinity. Mar Yakup Monastery derives its name from a priest (Marislium). It was later known as “Marevgan Monastery”. According to a hearsay, Marbinyamin, one of the heralds of the east had the bones of his oldest disciple buried here. The monastery was also knows as “Marhonesya” for a time. The museum is housed in the former patriarchate constructed in 1895 by the Patriarch of Antakya, Ignatios Benham Banni. Now restored to its original condition, the building houses collections dating from 4000 BC up to the present day and representing the Assyrian, Urartian, Hellenistic, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Artuklu and Ottoman periods. Pottery, seals, cylinder seals, coins, lamps, figurines, teardrop
bottles, and jewelry are among the many and fascinating exhibits. Mardin has preserved the old-style carving in its houses. Since located in a volcanic area, the basic input used in local architecture is easily workable calcareous rock. Houses in Mardin, reflecting all features of a closed-in life style are surrounded by 4 meters high walls and isolated from the street. These walls also provide protection from harsh climatic conditions. Houses have their separate sections for males and females and mostly have no kitchen. The most important feature of these houses is the stone craftsmanship called “Midyat Work”. Doors, windows and small columns are dressed with arches and various motif. The central settlement was given the status of urban site area in 1979. Above the house doors are carved pictures of the Kaaba if the owner has made the pilgrimage to Mecca, and the door knockers have a distinctive form resembling the beaks of birds. Often the lanes run through arched tunnels beneath the upper floors of houses. Relief carvings of animals and fruit lend the city a dream-like character, and the modern world seems to fade away. Syrian Orthodox gold and silver smiths whose work is famous throughout the country still practice their craft here, their workshops side by side with those of Muslim copper smiths. Along with the buildings themselves, it is to be hoped that this living culture can also be preserved.

TAT Announces Tourism Promotion Strategy for 2011 The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced its promotional strategy for 2011 along with several initiatives designed for specific market segments. For next year, TAT will still use the highly successful “Amazing Thailand” theme. It will be enhanced with the new tag line “Always Amazes You” to reinforce the many aspects of “Thainess” that are so appealing to visitors from all over the world. Some 15.5 million international tourist arrivals will be targeted for 2011, generating approximate revenue of 600 billion Baht (18.5 billion USD.), an increase of 9 percent from last year and the domestic tourism sector expects to have 91 million trips with revenue of 432 billion Baht (13.3 billion USD.), a rise of 3 percent from last year. The “Amazing Thailand” theme has gained worldwide recognition, as it built up the country’s strong brand and positioning as a destination that offers tremendous value-formoney, a unique culture, and a wide variety of experiences to visitors. This theme is being complemented by the “Always Amazes You” tag line to reinforce the concept of “Thainess” - that makes the Kingdom a truly exceptional destination and differentiates it from other countries, as well as have confidence in travelling to Thailand for their holidays and business meetings. “For 2011, we will build on Thailand’s many traditional strengths as a preferred tourist destination by branching out into new market segments such as green and sustainable tourism,” said Mr Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. “We will also expand traditional channels into more online and social media activations, reaching the next generation of visitors who have a desire for more interesting and stimulating travel experiences.” Outreach via traditional and social media channels The TAT’s marketing campaigns for 2011 will be highly visible worldwide through traditional promotional channels including TV commercials and vignettes, print advertising, out-of-home media, brochures, and posters. There will also be an increased use of celebrity marketing, inviting popular actors, and sports figures to major events in Thailand, while also encouraging the movie industry to consider Thailand as a shooting location. In the new media space, TAT will reach the younger demographic of travellers using social media; such as, an Amazing Thailand video channel on YouTube featuring short documentaries, more use of E-Books and E-Brochures, an iThai application to get Thai tourism updates on iPhone, and an Internet Call Centre that visitors can contact via computer. We will also build on the member network of the Thailand Fan Club that has already been established in our Europe and Middle East markets. Positive signs for the tourism sector in 2011 There are many positive indicators of a promising year for Thai tourism in 2011. They include the stabilization of the Thai political situation, with foreign governments easing their travel warnings about Thailand. Recent surveys of tourists in Thailand showed there is still a very positive attitude towards Thailand, with them considering it a friendly, exciting, and welcoming place with a lot of variety. Other positive indicators for the coming year include economies around Asia showing steady improvement, with countries such as India and Australia showing solid signs of growth. This is especially promising for short-haul markets such as India, China and Indonesia, which have large populations of potential visitors just a few hours away. The airline industry is also demonstrating its confidence in Thailand with new flights added from key markets; such as,

Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, and Vietnam to Thailand. The “Amazing Thailand - Always Amazes You” campaign will focus on specific activities that are popular with visitors from Asian markets. The value that Thailand offers to shoppers will be highlighted through the “Amazing Thailand Shopping Paradise” campaign. The foundation of this campaign is the “Amazing Thailand Grand Sale,” which will see even more activities and special offers from participating department stores. TAT will more actively engage target markets through their local media and support for tour companies to sell holiday shopping packages. There will be ongoing promotion of Thailand’s strength as a shopping destination. TAT will arrange for media familiarization visits to the country’s leading shopping areas. It will also work with major department stores to offer discount coupons to distribute to tourists and tour companies that offer shopping packages. Given the popularity of golf among Asian visitors, TAT will also highlight Thailand’s hundreds of world-class golf courses. The “Amazing Thailand Golf Paradise” campaign will include the “Thailand Golf Invitation TAT 50th Anniversary Golf Tournament.” Marketing activities will include support for TV golf programmes, new promotional materials to highlight Thailand as a preferred golf destination, joint marketing, and support for “Golf Package” sales with tour companies and golf magazines; bringing leading golf columnists to Thailand so they can experience Thailand’s golf courses first hand, and inviting media to visit the Golf Travel Mart. The “5 Asian Tigers Golf Tournament” will be hosted especially for the East Asia markets. Related activities include arranging a golf inspection trip for travel agents and media to try out golf courses in Chiang Mai and throughout the northern region during May 2011. Seminars and golf tournaments for consumers will also take place around this time. To appeal to the growing market of environmentallyconscious travellers, TAT will introduce the “Go Green, Go Thailand” campaign. It will bring travel agents and media to the Kingdom to survey Green Destinations, check out Green Label products, and join conservation activities such as planting trees and preserving coral reefs. They will also be invited to join the Thailand Eco and Adventure Travel Mart 2011. “In addition to focusing on restoring Thai tourism for the remainder of this year, TAT is working closely with Thailand’s travel sector to develop products and marketing initiatives that will sustain tourism over the long term. We will announce many more initiatives during the coming months that will help to ensure we meet the country’s tourism targets for 2011,” concluded Mr Suraphon. For domestic tourism, the TAT plans to establish a new dimension in terms of value and understanding among Thai people about the important contribution their domestic travel makes to the Thai economy. By making domestic tourism an integral part of Thai people’s lives, the TAT hopes to shift the perception of Thai travellers and tourism owners and operators alike to a new awareness that will lead to sustainable tourism. The core tourism values that TAT aims to build are travel with awareness (pride); travel with creativity (gain new ideas and perspectives); travel together (to encourage unity and respect for diversity); travel with understanding (gain knowledge and wisdom); and travel by the heart (feel love and cherish the amazing moments). n

Visitor Arrivals to Asia - Pacific Grew by 10% PATA The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) released the preliminary Asia and the Pacific1 international visitor arrivals figures for the months of April and May 2010, showing year-on-year growth in arrivals of seven per cent and 16% respectively. For the first five months of 2010, international visitor arrivals to the region grew by a robust 10% as compared to the same period last year. The improving global economic environment continued to boost overall travel demand in April and May. However, there was a noticeable impact on air travel caused by the ash cloud from Iceland’s volcanic eruption, which dampened arrival flows to and from Europe. Growth was much stronger in May with the end of the ash cloud problem in Europe and the Labour Day holiday in China (PRC); however, it must be remembered that this monthly comparison is against a lower arrivals base in May 2009 when the travel industry, already down from the global recession, was hit further by the spread of the A (H1N1) flu. International arrivals to South Asia2 grew by four per cent and 19% in April and May respectively, with the continuously improving safety and security situation helping to boost arrivals to the sub-region. Sri Lanka, one year on from the end of the decades-long civil war, continues to record robust growth in arrivals in April and May, at year-on-year rates of 47% and 42% respectively. For the first five months of the year, arrivals to South Asia surged 15%; the fastest in terms of rate of growth among the sub-regions under review. Arrivals to Southeast Asia grew by better than eight per cent year-on-year for both the months of April and May; comparatively slower than that seen in the first three months of the year, but robust nonetheless. Some

slowdown – albeit marginal - can be attributed to the ash cloud disruption in April and the political turmoil in Thailand that negatively impacted visitor arrivals to the Kingdom, which were down by 0.2% and 13% in April and May respectively. With the exception of Thailand, arrivals to other Southeast Asian destinations remained robust. Overall, the sub-region recorded year-on-year growth of 13% in the first five months of the year. The largest sub-region in terms of visitor volumes, Northeast Asia3, registered a steady growth of seven per cent during April and a massive 19% increase during May. This has been supported by the large and robust intraregional flows within Mainland China and the two SARs of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as the growing popularity of Chinese Taipei as a nearby destination. Equally impressive was the growth in international arrivals to Japan which surged 26% and 49% in April and May respectively. Japan is currently enjoying a period of buoyant recovery, recording six consecutive months of double-digit growth in arrivals since December last year, following a long slump. Overall, growth in international arrivals to Northeast Asia reached 10% for the first five months of the year. Among the sub-regions, only the Pacific recorded overall declines in visitor numbers in April and May. Arrivals to Australia and New Zealand were down by six per cent and four per cent respectively for those two months, as the ash cloud disruption negatively impacted arrivals from Europe. The majority of the smaller Pacific island destinations also recorded declines in arrivals in April. Apart from the Northern Marianas, Palau and Tuvalu, growth in arrivals to the Pacific remained sluggish in May. For the first five months of 2010, visitor arrivals to the Pacific grew by a modest two per cent as compared to the same period last year. n

Air Arabia Announces Q1 - 2010 net Profit of AED 50 Million Air Arabia (PJSC), the Middle East and North Africa’s first and largest low-cost carrier, announced its financial results for the three months ending March 31, 2010, demonstrating continued profitability during a period characterised by lower yields among airlines worldwide. Air Arabia’s net profit for the three months ending March 31, 2010, stood at AED 50 million, a decline of 51 per cent compared to AED 103 million in the corresponding period in 2009. This decline in profitability was in line with global trends of the aviation industry performance represented by the increase in fuel cost as well as continuous pressure on yield margins. In the first quarter of this year, Air Arabia posted a turnover of AED 482 million, an increase of 4 per cent compared to AED 463 million in the same period of 2009. The airline served 1.03 million passengers in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 9.2 per cent compared to 951,000 passengers in the same period last year. In the three months ending March 31, 2010, Air Arabia’s average seat load factor - or passengers carried as a percentage of available seats - stood at an impressive 80 per cent, sustaining the carrier’s performance from the previous period. “We are glad with the positive results Air Arabia posted in the first quarter of this year,” said Adel Ali, Board Member and Group Chief Executive Officer, Air Arabia. “The lingering impact of the global financial crisis and the rise in fuel cost continues to affect the profitability of airlines worldwide as a result of continuous dilution in yields versus market over capacity. Nevertheless, Air Arabia posted appealing profits for this quarter and maintained its positive
growth in passenger numbers.” “As we continue to chart our growth path, including the upcoming launch of service from our third hub in Egypt, Air Arabia remains committed to excellence across its operations, and providing its customer best value for money.” Air Arabia currently provides service to 60 destinations
across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia from its hubs in UAE and Morocco. The low-cost carrier will shortly introduce service across the Europe, Middle East and Africa region through Air Arabia “Egypt,” the carrier’s Alexandriabased joint venture company formed in cooperation with the Travco Group, the Middle East’s largest travel and hospitality group. n

SWISS Aircraft takes off in “San Francisco” Design Swiss International Air Lines will commence its new non-stop service between Zurich and San Francisco on 2 June. To mark the event, the airline has come up with a “first” in its corporate history: one of its Airbus A340s - the biggest aircraft in the fleet will be sporting a colourful and flowery design together with striking “San Francisco” lettering as a tribute to the West Coast city’s famed flower power past. The launch of the new route has been preceded by extensive preparations. At Zurich Airport alone, a team of eight individuals spent three days applying the new colour scheme to the 63-metre-long aircraft. The work involved the use of almost 400 square metres of special film. And the “flower power” A340, registration HB-JMJ, is now ready to operate SWISS’s first flight to San Francisco on 2 June. The final design was chosen from a selection of three by the readers of the 20 Minuten daily paper. Around 30 000 readers voted, and their choice will remain on the aircraft for more than a year. Customers aboard the “San Francisco” aircraft can expect a further highlight inside. HB-JMJ is the first of SWISS’s A340s to be equipped with the new SWISS Business cabin, with its unique seating arrangement and the generous space it
provides and seats that feature an innovative air cushion whose firmness can be swiftly and flexibly adjusted to individual wishes, to name just two of the new cabin’s many benefits. Under current plans, a second A340 should have the new SWISS Business cabin installed by mid-July, enabling the new Business Class product to be offered to travellers on all Zurich-San Francisco flights. The first SWISS flight to San Francisco is already booked out, and demand is extremely strong for the following days, too. Full details of seat availability can be found on the swiss.com website. n

Turizm izlenimlerimizden önce Almaty’i kısaca tanıtalım.
