ACI World-Europe Conference held in Istanbul Despite anti-government protests that have rocked the city, the general assembly of ACI World, the global platform of airport operators and ACI Europe, held in Istanbul without any problem. ACI World-Europe Conference held in Istanbul under the TAV Airports sponsorship. More than 800 senior executives who govern 95% of the global air traffic met in Istanbul. Airport Council International, the main organization of the airport operators and ACI Europe have decided to hold their general assembly meetings in Istanbul this year. The opening ceremony of the two-day conference at Istanbul Congress center was attended by many executives including State Airport Authority (DHMI) General Manager Orhan Birdal, ACI World General Director Angela Gittens, ACI Europe General Director Olivier Jankovec and TAV Group CEO and ACI Europe Board Member Sani Sener. Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication Minister Binali Yildirim sent a video message to the opening ceremony and emphasized that Turkey has achieved a significant success in the aviation sector for the past 10 years. He said that despite the global standstill, Turkey has achieved double digit growth rates which created the need for more investment in infrastructure. ACI World General Director Angela Gittens said that airports are facing new obstacles and opportunities due to increasing global competition. Showing the double digit growth rates achieved by Istanbul Ataturk Airport as an example, Gittens underlined the importance of this achievement. Stating that airports were inclining mainly towards passenger based revenues in line with airlines and airline associations getting strong, Gittens also said “The view that airports operate in monopoly is a myth.” TAV Group CEO and ACI Europe Board Member Sani Sener said that Istanbul is an historical city dating back 3000 years and they are very happy to be hosting such a major event. “We provided service to 10 million passengers during our first year of operation at Ataturk Airport. Last year we welcomed 45 million passengers and the total number of passengers we provide service to across all airports we operate reached 72 million. The coalition of TAV Airports and Aéroports de Paris created one of the world’s largest platforms in the airport operation sector. In this sector, knowing the behaviour and demands of the passengers is very important; together with AdP, we have data for 200 million passengers and I am confident that we will move both our industry and company forward. I would like to thank you all and wish everyone a pleasant meeting.” Airport Service Quality Award Winners Airports Council International (ACI) honoured recipients of its annual 2012 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards and inductees to ACI’s Director General’s Roll of Excellence during the ACI Europe and World Annual Congress & Exhibition 2013 Gala Dinner and ASQ Awards Ceremony at Ciragan Palace Kempinski. Top International Congresses Meet Successfully in Istanbul
During two weeks of environmental protests around Turkey, the World’s # 1 congress destination with more than 500 delegates, Istanbul has successfully continued hosting International congresses. Within the last two weeks Istanbul has hosted The 14th EFORT Congress, with 6,800 participants, the Turkish Pediatrics Society, with 2,000 participants and several other prestigious meetings and congresses have been successfully held in Istanbul’s Congress Valley and environs. The tourism industry is among the sectors most directly impacted by the protests that have taken place primarily in Istanbul’s Taksim Square, but also throughout Turkey, in recent days. The members of the tourism industry have invested significant effort in both ensuring that their guests are not negatively impacted by the protests. The government has publicly stated that they have understood the demands made by protesters exercising their democratic rights and will take the steps necessary. Moreover, currently Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is working on greening and planting the Gezi Park and the protests finished in Taksim Area and back to its everyday life. Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu, the General Manager of the Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau, evaluated the impact of the protests in Taksim’s Gezi Park on the tourism industry. “Thus far there have been very few congresses cancelled,” said Fisunoğlu, continuing, “However, there have, of course, been last-minute cancellations at hotels. As of this point in time, nothing has happened that will negatively affect Istanbul’s reputation or interfere with the city’s ability to attract future congresses.”
Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau reported; “This week the Hilton Istanbul will host a congress with 250 participants, while the Haliç Congress Center will host a congress with around 1.000 participants. We continue to provide the national and international organizers with coordination assistance and communication support. We are providing all relevant parties with information and images showing that normal business and social life in Istanbul is not disrupted, that life goes on as usual. Necessary steps have been taken to inform and reassure organizers of congresses to be held in the near future in Istanbul.” Fisunoğlu stated that Istanbul closed out 2011 & 2012 as the world’s number one destination for congresses with 500 or more delegates. Fisunoğlu, while stating that she hoped that current events would not threaten Istanbul’s leading position said, “On the basis of numbers extracted from ICCA figures, it looks as Istanbul is sharing the number one position with Barcelona and Paris in 2012 for congresses with 500 and more participation.” The happenings have not affected Istanbul’s image as a leading international congress and tourism destination. Istanbul is recognized as a peaceful, safe and stable destination thanks to the many high-profile events it has hosted. Moreover, since Istanbul offers several independent congress and meeting districts with full infrastructure including venues and accommodations, some organizers have opted to relocate their events within the city during this short period. As Istanbul and Turkey return to business as usual, underlining the increasing maturity of the country’s democracy, we look forward to welcoming international guests to an exciting schedule of congresses and high-profile cultural events, including the Istanbul Shopping Fest, which runs through June 30th. Sports fans will not want to miss the Mediterranean Games being held in Mersin from June 20th – 30th, or the FIFA U-20 World Cup being hosted all around the country including Istanbul from June 21st to July 13th. Even today when there are far fewer of the wonderful wooden yalıs (waterside mansions) than there used to be, the Bosphorus is still lined with properties that sell for eye-watering sums of money, right up there in the real estate premier league with the most expensive homes in London and New York. Visitors to the city may only be able to dream of seeing behind their elegant facades, but they can gaze out on them in envy from the decks of the many Bosphorus excursion boats.
Those in a hurry may have to make do with one of the shorter cruises operated out of Eminönü by private companies. But for a real tour is best to set aside enough time for one of the longer cruises operated daily by the İstanbul ferry company Şehir Hatları. They too leave from Eminönü although you’ll
need to give the pushy private ticket tours the slip if you want to use them.

There are many wonderful things about a leisurely Bosphorus cruise. In the first place you get to see the city free of the smog, noise, and traffic jams. Secondly, you get to see it as it was originally viewed by those who built the yalıs and palaces along its shores - since there was no
coast road in the 19th century people had to move between the various Bosphorus villages (as they were then) using a fleet of public and private boats. Thirdly, you get to observe the wildlife that haunts the water - most obviously the seagulls who dive enthusiastically to snatch the pieces of simits tossed to them, but also the flocks of tiny shearwaters that skim the water, and the cormorants who spread their wings on every available resting post, then dive for any fish foolish enough to swim
by. The luckiest passengers of all even get to glimpse the pods of dolphins that have returned to the Bosphorus since its waters were cleaned up. Beyond Sarayburnu the ferries swivel left and start their journey north towards the Black Sea. Looking towards the Asian shore you’ll see the pretty little Maiden’s Tower, frequently rebuilt over the centuries and subject to a fairly predictable story involving an imprisoned princess, a basket of fruit, and a lethal hidden snake. For some time to come the waters around it will continue to be littered with the paraphernalia of building work for the delayed Marmaray project which will eventually provide an underwater tunnel to link up Europe and Asia. Back on the European shore the ferry meanders past Tophane, the site of the old arsenal, and the redundant warehouse that has become home to the Istanbul Modern art gallery. Shortly afterwards you’ll see the elaborate white building that houses the Dolmabahçe Palace to which the sultans

Beyond Arnavutköy the Bosphorus narrows and two castles jut up on the skyline. The older of the two is Anadolu Hisarı on the Asian side which has suffered the indignity of being sliced in two by the modern shore road. Bigger and far more impressive is Rumeli Hisarı, built by Sultan Mehmed II as he planned his assault on Constantinople in 1452 and completely restored in 1952 to commemorate its 500th anniversary. Right beside it looms the second Bosphorus bridge which went up in 1988 and was named, not altogether surprisingly, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.

As the ferry continues its slow journey northwards it bypasses on the European shore two wonderful and undervisited private museums, the Sakıp Sabancı which plays host to many of the city’s blockbuster exhibitions, and the Sadberk Hanım which houses permanent collections of archeology and ethnography. Between the two more magnificent yalıs line the shore at Yeniköy while there are reminders of the days when the foreign embassies
maintained summer residences on the Bosphorus at Tarabya. The ferries come to the end of their run at Rumeli Kavağı, a small settlement with a cluster of fish restaurants, before shimmying across to Anadolu Kavağı on the Asian shore which is little more than fish restaurants. Energetic passengers can disembark here and stride uphill to inspect the remains of Yoros Castle which was built by the Byzantines and then taken over by the Genoese in the 14th century. From here you can gaze north towards the Black Sea, a vista that looks set to be drastically altered now that the goahead has been given for a third Bosphorus bridge between sleepy little Garipçe on the European shore and Poyrazköy, a beach resort named after the chilly wind that whips through it in winter, on the Asian shore.
The Bosphorus cruise boats make only limited stops, at Beşiktaş, Kanlıca (a suburb famous for its yoghurt), Yeniköy, Sarıyer, Rumeli Kavağı and Anadolu Kavaği. Once you’ve got the lie of the land, however, there’s nothing to stop you using the local ferries to explore at your own pace. Many services only operate in the morning and evening to suit the needs of commuters, but there’s also a useful service that links Çengelköy, Arnavutköy, Bebek, Kandilli, Küçüksu, Anadolu Hisarı, Kanlıca, Emirgan and İstinye every couple of hours on weekdays with an abbreviated service at weekends. U-20 World Cup Kicks Off in Style in Istanbul The President of FIFA Joseph Blatter and Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony of the U20 World Cup Games and the opening match of the tournament was played between Cuba and South Korea at the Kadir Has Stadium in Kayseri. Turkey’s Cüneyt Cakir was the referee of game. On the same day in Istanbul which is one of Istanbul’s key proposed venues for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games – the Ali Sami Yen Turk Telecom Arena hosted another opening match. The 52,000 all-seater stadium is one of five proposed football venues in Istanbul 2020’s candidature file and fans present on Friday night saw France beat Ghana 3-1 followed by a 4-1 win for Spain over USA. In the opening night’s other games in Kayseri, Korea Rebublic beat Cuba 2-1 and Portugal beat Nigeria 3-2. These matches were followed by a spectacular 14-minute opening ceremony showcasing Anatolian culture. The selection of Turkey to host the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which features 52 games in total across seven Turkish cities, provides the country’s sport authorities with further experience of holding major, international events. Over the past seven years Turkey has held more than 40 major sporting competitions and, as well as the FIFA U-20 World Cup, the country is currently staging the 2013 Mediterranean Games in Mersin. “The Under-20 World Cup is the first official FIFA competition Turkey has ever held and Istanbul 2020 also represents a number of historic firsts for the Olympic Movement. It would be the first time Turkey hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the first time a Games takes place across two continents simultaneously and the first time in Games history that anyone will be able to watch an Olympic or Paralympic event in Asia in the morning and another in Europe in the afternoon. To the Olympic Movement Istanbul 2020 really does represent a bridge to a new culture,” said Hasan Arat, Chairman
of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee. While both these events will showcase Turkey to the world, football’s mass appeal means a total of five hundred million viewers in more than 190 countries are expected to watch matches during FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013. Tournament matches will be played in Istanbul, Bursa, Antalya, Trabzon, Rize, Kayseri and Gaziantep. Turkey will compete in Group C with Colombia, El Salvador and Australia. The semifinals will be played on July 10 in Bursa and Trabzon. The match for the third place will be played on July 13 in Istanbul and the final game will be played on the same day at Istanbul’s Ali Sami Yen Turk Telecom Arena. Jim Boyce, Organising Committee Chairman for FIFA U-20 World Cup Turkey 2013, said, “As you know, Turkey are bidding to host the Olympic Games and obviously this tournament, which is going to go out worldwide, is hopefully going to show Turkey in the proper light. “I know that the football public in Turkey are eagerly looking forward to this event. The FIFA Under-20 World Cup is second only to the FIFA World Cup, so I think this is a very important occasion for Turkish football and a very important occasion for Turkey as a country.”
The 17th Mediterranean Games Opened in Mersin
The 17th Mediterranean Games was launched in spectacular fashion in Mersin as the Opening Ceremony marked the beginning of the largest ever Mediterranean Games, after the Turkish hosts successfully completed all preparations in just 18 months. Twenty-five thousand spectators gathered to watch the Opening Ceremony in the brand new Mersin stadium – one of 38 newly built or renovated venues delivered by TOKI. TOKI, the powerful delivery agency that would be responsible for the construction of all Istanbul 2020’s Games venues, successfully

compressed a six-year construction programme into just 18 months, after Mersin stepped in to replace the Greek city of Volos less than two years ago. Mersin 2013 is set to be the biggest Mediterranean Games in history, with a record participation of around 6,000 athletes from 24 countries. President of the Turkish National Olympic Committee, Professor Uğur Erdener, said: “Watching the Opening Ceremony today demonstrated how much this country can achieve when we are united behind a common goal. In just 18 months, TOKI has delivered what would normally take six years to deliver. TOKI has a proven track record, building 60,000 houses a year — the equivalent of an Olympic Village every quarter. With TOKI’s proven expertise and the finance and governance guarantees provided by our Olympic Law, the Olympic family can be assured that if Istanbul is awarded the honour of hosting the 2020 Games, we will deliver technically excellent venues on schedule in an environmentally responsible way.” Professor Erdener added: “Hosting the 17th Mediterranean Games here in Turkey adds to our ever increasing pool of experience and expertise in hosting major sporting events. In the last seven years, Turkey has hosted over 40 major international events, with Istanbul hosting 12 last year alone. The Mediterranean Games provide us with yet another opportunity to refine our offering to the NOCs and their athletes and ensure that Istanbul 2020 honours its commitment to providing the most comprehensive NOC solution and support package.”
New Metro Line for Istanbul 2020 Istanbul 2020 continued to deliver on its promise to significantly boost Istanbul’s transport infrastructure with the opening of a new metro line linking the proposed Olympic Park to the heart of the city. A 16.5 kilometre-long line was launched which will lower the travelling time between the Olympic Park area and the main bus terminal in Esenler, to just eight minutes. The line can carry 70,000 people per hour and is an important milestone in Istanbul 2020’s promise to keep the average Olympic Villageto-venue time for athletes to just 16 minutes. Hasan Arat, Chairman of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee, said: “The construction of this metro line is an historic undertaking and underlines how serious Istanbul 2020 is about delivering an exceptional Games platform for everyone; athletes, fans and the Olympic family. “Istanbul is the fifth most visited destination on the planet so we have a robust transport network in place, but a thriving city needs constant improvement and Istanbul 2020 recognises that. Developments such as this will also benefit Istanbul’s population for years to come as it is part of our Integrated Urban Transport Master Plan that will deliver an investment of $9.8 billion in transport infrastructure between 2009 and 2023.”
Istanbul’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games started in 1992 with the enactment of Turkey’s Olympic Law and the 21 years since have encompassed five bids. Istanbul’s last bid was in 2005 and the face of the city’s transport infrastructure has improved dramatically in the last eight years.
Istanbul 2020 Pledges “Most Comprehensive NOC Support Package ” govern, will be strengthened. And Istanbul will be an even better host for 2020.” Hasan Arat emphasised the once-in-alifetime opportunity Istanbul 2020 offers the NOCs: “We have aligned the needs of our city with the needs of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our city needs more transportation infrastructure, and we are building it. Our urban population needs more sports facilities, and we are developing them. Our young people need more role models, and the Games offers them. For the first time in history, an Olympic bid city has the legislation, funding and all organisation and delivery structures in place to deliver a successful Games. “Istanbul has been a meeting point for millennia. Istanbul offers the Olympic Movement a bridge to a New Culture: to a region and a people who have never hosted the Olympic Games before. The Olympic Movement has stepped beyond sport to Istanbul 2020 reaffirmed the bid’s commitment to providing write history in the past, and now there is a chance to write a the most comprehensive NOC support package and new page in its history today.” ensuring that athletes enjoy the best experience possible, Secretary General of the Turkish NOC, Neşe Gündoğan, spoke in a presentation to the delegates at the Association of about Istanbul 2020’s unique offering to the NOCs: “We National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Extraordinary General have a robust plan because we have listened to you. Mersin is “Excellent Template” for Istanbul 2020 Istanbul 2020’s promise to deliver a technically excellent platform for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 and to introduce the Olympic Movement’s values to new audiences has been reinforced by Mersin’s successful hosting to date of the 2013 Mediterranean Games. Istanbul 2020’s construction agency, TOKI, has proved its credentials in delivering Mersin’s Games infrastructure on time and on budget by helping organisers compress the usual six-year preparation time into just 18 months. Games organisers have also had sufficient time to build up regional and continental enthusiasm for the Games as almost 100,000 people have already attended 28 events so far. Professor Ugur Erdener, President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, said:“The delivery of Mersin 2013’s robust Games platform in such a comparatively short time has rightly drawn much praise from the media and the Olympic Family as well as fans and athletes here in Mersin. “But it is not just in bricks and mortar that the Organising Committee, under the leadership of the Minister of Youth and Sport, Suat Kilic, has excelled. Naturally they have had much less time to publicise these Games than normal but I have seen stadia at full capacity with
fans turning out to watch Turkish and foreign athletes alike. The athletes here have access to top-quality facilities to help them reach their personal best and their superb performances are adding to the excitement for all fans. “The Turkish government provided a significant budget for these Games compared with previous editions and this shows how committed Turkey is to organising first-class events and to hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Mersin will prove to be an excellent template for Istanbul 2020, if our bid is victorious.” Mersin 2013’s Organising Committee lowered ticket prices before the Games to ensure the city’s new facilities and ambitious sport vision are seen by as many people as possible. The first six days of the Games confirm this aim is being achieved. The Opening Ceremony was attended by 25,000 people and there have been full-capacity crowds at venues such as for basketball and volleyball. Athletics starts today at the 3,000-capacity Athletics Complex and will end on Saturday, the penultimate day of the Games. Muhammed Adak, Deputy General Coordinator of the Mediterranean Games, said: “The number of spectators is good. As an Organising Committee we are very happy about this.“We lowered the price of tickets because there has been a large investment in facilities and we wanted to make sure people come and see them and to instil a sports mentality amongst the city’s youth. “These Games are about Olympism and sharing a sports vision with the Mediterranean people. We’ve installed high-quality venues with great technology and this will benefit the city for years – the Athletes’ Village for example will be a university dormitory for 3,500 people after the Games.”
Istanbul 2020 played a prominent role in the celebration of Youth and Sports Day, one of the world’s only national holidays specifically created to help make sport and healthy lifestyles an integral part of young people’s lives. State ceremonies and sports events were staged nationwide on Sunday 19 May, as people watched and took part in a wide range of Olympic and Paralympic sports. Istanbul 2020 sponsored a fun run from Dolmabahçe Palace to Bebek Park in the Beşiktaş area of Istanbul. Over 2,000 people of all ages ran the six kilometre Istanbul 2020-branded course. As part of the celebrations, the Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports, Suat Kılıç, put the finishing touches to the world’s largest ground painting – a 12,000m² mural featuring a highjumper leaping over the Bosphorus Bridge and hands joining in friendship from Europe to Asia. More than 250 students participated in creating the painting, and their efforts were rewarded when it was officially confirmed as a world recordbreaker by the Guinness Book of Records. Chairman of the Istanbul 2020 Bid Committee, Hasan Arat, said: “Atatürk’s wish for 19 May to be commemorated as Youth and Sports Day shows how he viewed sport as a powerful way of promoting the values of Olympism in Turkey. These fundamental principles have been preserved in Turkey and are encapsulated in our Games offering. Istanbul 2020 aims to realise the full potential of Turkey’s 31 million people under 25 through mass sport participation and structured education and entrepreneurial programmes. Istanbul 2020 will be a bridge to a new generation of connected global citizens and young leaders in sport, business, engineering, the media and volunteering.” Turkey’s Youth and Sports Day has been celebrated every year since 1938 in commemoration of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who believed that sport and the values of fair play and teamwork should be fundamental
to Turkish society. Turkey’s Olympic Law incorporates elements of the Olympic Charter and enshrines the right of every Turkish citizen to participate in sport. It was a groundbreaking piece of legislation when it was enacted in 1992, and it forms the basis of Istanbul 2020’s robust guarantees of financing, governance and delivery. Turkey is investing heavily in sports infrastructure as part of the country’s 2023 Master Plan and will continue to do so regardless of the outcome of the bid campaign. The National Sports Plan provides for a government investment of $500 million annually in sports participation and development. It is supplemented by an additional $2.5 billion government investment that will deliver 693 sports facilities for elite and community sport and 25 new stadia across Turkey by 2014. President of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, Uğur Erdener, said: “Youth and Sports Day is one of the most enthusiastically celebrated holidays in Turkey, and having a national youth festival with a specific sports angle is unique to our country. The investment in sports infrastructure will benefit all levels of sport participation in Turkey from grassroots through to elite level. Many of the state-of-the-art facilities that will serve Olympic athletes in 2020 will serve as both elite and recreational sport resources after the Games.”
