Zika affects travel As the number of travelers, tourist arrivals, new destinations, new tourism trends and types increase, life gets harder as well. After bombs, terror attacks, and wars, now our new distress is Zika virus. Last year Ebola virus that emerged from western Africa affected travel. And now Zira virus outbreak started in Brazil and quickly spreads across the Americas. First we know that Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites but recently the Zika virus contracted in Texas was transmitted sexually. The virus is likely to spread with travels. On February 4th, Spain has confirmed that a pregnant woman has been diagnosed with the Zika virus - the first such case in Europe. Zika has been linked to babies being born with underdeveloped brains. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the microcephaly condition, linked to the mosquito-borne virus, a global public health emergency. UNWTO released a statement and recalls that health and tourism authorities are working together to inform residents, tourists as well as the industry about the precautions to be taken and the tourism sector is working closely with health authorities to follow WHO prevention recommendations. In this issue, you will read holiday destinations in Aegean coast. We believe that you will enjoy discovering the coastal paradise of Turkey from Aegean Sea to Mediterranean. Also we bring you several news from World tourism sector as well as information from important travel exhibitions held in January and February. Wish you healthy and peaceful journeys.

F TURKEY NEWS Support package for Turkish tourism
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on February 22nd announced a financial support package for the tourism sector, after a series of bomb attacks and Russian sanctions curbed the industry’s growth and led to a rise in bad loans. In the press conference held to announce a “2016 Tourism Action Plan”, Davutoglu said that there would be numerous advantages and support schemes ranging from grant-in-aid to long-term loans for tourism companies. “We will provide to our industry 255 million Turkish liras ($86 million) of grant-in-aid within action package,” Davutoglu said. “We are also delaying the sector’s debt payment of 288 million Turkish liras [and implementing] a right to extend the maturity date of payments to three years.” The action plan also offers a $6,000 subsidy per flight for tourism agencies from what is known as the “Group A” between April 1 and May 31. “Group A” tourism agencies can offer tickets for all types of transportation as well as arrange tours. Moreover, accommodation and sea tourism facilities such as boat tour companies and entertainment venues that generate foreign exchange earnings of more than $750,000 last year, will benefit from advantages generally offered to export companies. The threshold was $1 million last year.
Davutoglu added that a spare budget allowance would be used for these financial aids, and that this would not constitute an additional burden to the economy. “There is no reason to panic with regards to tourist numbers; precautionary measures are being taken,” Davutoglu said. “We already provide support to the tourism sector. I do not expect any contraction in the tourism sector.” Tourist numbers of Turkey have seen steady declines since August last year. The slip in numbers has further deepened after Turkish fighter jets downed a Russian warplane that had violated Turkish airspace. The main driver of the decline was the fall in the number of Russian tourists. After the fighter jet incident, Moscow imposed various sanctions in numerous areas including tourism. “We believe Russian tourists will start coming back to Turkey,” Turkish PM said, adding that it is not ethical to change people’s choices by political force. He said that the tensions between Turkey and Russia should not be reflected on the “guests” who visit the country. According to data from the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry, Russian tourist numbers have declined by18.5 percent in 2015, compared to previous year, to 3.65 million. In October, just before Russia imposed sanctions, the ratio of Russian tourists in overall numbers was 7 percent but in December, it was down to 1.7 percent. The number of tourists coming to Turkey dipped by 22.6 percent in the last quarter of 2015 year-on-year to 8.11 million while tourism revenue slipped 14.3 percent to $6.57 billion. Tourism in Turkey largely depends on a variety of historical sites and seaside resorts along its Aegean and Mediterranean Sea coasts. In recent years, Turkey became a popular destination for culture, spa, and health care tourism. In 2011, Turkey attracted more than 31.5 million foreign tourists, ranking as the sixth most popular tourist destination in the world.
Istanbul to have Turkey’s first driverless metro line
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality announced that Turkey’s first driverless metro line will be put into service in Istanbul by end of 2016. The driverless automated metro line, Üsküdar-ÜmraniyeÇekmeköy-Sancaktepe line, will be the second metro line on the Anatolian side of Istanbul and will mark another first by incorporating ‘automated platform gates’. The automated platform gates are chest-height sliding doors that prevent passengers from falling off the platform edge onto the railway tracks. These platform gates slide open and close simultaneously with the train’s doors.

With the debut of the new line, travel time between the Üsküdar and Sancaktepe districts will be decreased to 24 minutes. As the metro will have no driver, passengers will be able to sit in driver’s compartment and watch the train’s journey throughout the 2,750 meter-long tunel. The station and wagons will be under 24-hour surveillance. The driverless metro line will be able to reach speeds up to 90 kilometers per hour and will be operated from a command center that will see the operation of the 16-station line covering 20 kilometers. The 126-wagon train’s stops will be: Üsküdar, Fıstıkağacı, Bağlarbaşı, Altunizade, Kısıklı, Libadiye, Çarşı, Ümraniye, İnkılap Mahallesi, Çakmak, Ihlamurkuyu, Altınşehir, Lise, Dudullu, Toplu Konutlar, Çekmeköy and Sancaktepe. When the construction is finished passengers will be able to travel from Çekmeköy-Sancaktepe to Üsküdar in 24, to Kartal in 59, Yenikapı in 36, Taksim in 44, Hacıosman in 68, the Atatürk International Airport in 68 and the Olympic Stadium in 78 minutes. The world’s longest driverless train route is in Dubai at 80 kilometers and many countries have driverless train lines, although a driver is added occasionally in some countries for fear of possible failures in the system.

The holding has interests in energy, cars, durable consumer goods and finance. It is also active in technology, retail, food, agriculture, tourism and shipyards. MasterCard’s priceless surprise features FC Barcelona’s new star Arda Turan
Following his first match as a midfield player in FC Barcelona, Arda Turan appears in MasterCard’s new viral video. The new internet video from MasterCard, giving 12 Junior football players a chance to share the pitch with professional players, has been launched on digital media. The film’s heroes are 12 kids playing a knockabout neighborhood match completely oblivious to what is about to happen, and the world famous football star Arda Turan, who currently plays for FC Barcelona. The film took 6 months in the making. Out of all the world’s star players, MasterCard and UEFA chose Arda Turan, whose own story began at neighborhood games in the backstreets of
Istanbul, to be the centerpiece of the surprise video shoot. It’s just another day as the kids stream out onto the neighborhood pitch for a six-a-side match. As they start playing a black minibus with the MasterCard logo draws up at the edge of the pitch, from which Arda Turan emerges. Suddenly face to face with their hero the mini footballers quickly recover from their initial shock for a star-struck match with their beloved Arda, whose stellar career has stretched from being a ball boy to a star player for FC Barcelona. And it doesn’t end there; the real surprise for the children has only just kicked off! While every moment of the film is marked by a fresh surprise, the really big one comes at the end: Arda Turan escorts the kids on to a real pitch before a match in the UEFA Champions League, which has been sponsored by MasterCard for the past 22 years. Arda introduces the kids to the priceless thrill and experience of a lifetime with the words “Tomorrow you’ll be running onto the pitch hand in hand with the real players.” The next day the children, who only the previous day had been knocking a ball around in a neighborhood match, have their dreams come true as they come out onto the pitch hand in hand with the world’s most famous players before a real UEFA match! The film ends with the message “If you too want to see your children on the pitch hand in hand with their football heroes, get one step closer to this opportunity by going to www.pahabicilemezsurprizler.com .”

Antique city of Myra
T
he antique city of Myra, in the district center of Demre and surroundings, was built on a plain of the same name. The sea was connected to the city by a canal constructed to the west of the Myros River (today called the Demre River). The port of Andriake (Çayağzı) on the
other end of the canal was the centre for access to the sea and trade. The antique city of Myra is famous for its Lycian rockcut tombs, for its Roman theatre and for the Church of Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) dating back to the Byzantine period. The rock tombs, Lycian inscriptions and coins show that Myra was settled from at least the 5th century B.C. According to Strabon, Myra was one of the six leading cities of the Lycian League, and was then named Myrrh in Lycian inscriptions. The 2nd century A.D. was a period of great development in Myra. Many buildings were constructed and restored by the rich Lycians in the city which was the Metropolis of the Lycian League. During the Byzantine period Myra was the leading city of the region for religion and administration. It achieved its popularity through the Church of Saint Nicholas, which was built for Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) who was the Bishop of the city in the 4th century A.D. Myra lost its importance after the 7th century, a consequence of earthquakes, floods with alluvial silt deposited by the river and because of the Muslims coastal raids; and in consequence was reduced to county status after the 12th century.
Its remaining consists of a theatre to the south of the acropolis and rock-cut tombs on both sides of the theatre. Inspections have shown that -except for the erecting, firmly built walls from the Roman period- other wall remains dating from the Hellenistic period and even from the 5th century B.C. can be found on top of the acropolis and thereabouts.

Saint Nicholas
Saint Nicholas (15 March 270 – 6 December 343), was a historic 4thcentury saint and Greek Bishop of Myra (Demre-Turkey) in Lycia. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret giftgiving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose modern name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, itself from a series of elisions and corruptions of the transliteration of “Saint Nikolaos”. His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was common for early Christian saints. In 1087, part of the relics (about half of the bones) were furtively translated to Bari, in southeastern Italy; for this reason, he is also known as Nikolaos of Bari. Thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to Demre (formerly Myra) searching for the roots of Saint Nicholas. They come as pilgrims, especially from Russia up to sixty bus loads a day during the peak season where Saint Nicholas is revered as patron and a father of Orthodox faith. The beautiful beaches and warm weather along the

Mediterranean coast also draw visitors from both Eastern and Western Europe. They may come to Demre as pilgrims, or, out of curiosity, wondering about the origin of Santa Claus, who is called Noel Baba or Father Christmas in Turkey. Vendors’ stalls and shops are jam-packed with a vast array of St. Nicholas icon images offered in stone, weavings, wax, and metal. They are found as medals, bookmarks, plates, figurines, and icons. Rug dealers hawk his image in several sizes and many colors. Icon images greatly outnumber Santa-types, giving silent testimony to the numbers of Christian, particularly Orthodox, pilgrims. Saint Nicholas was born in Lycia, inTurkey. During his life, Constantine became Emperor, following Diocletian who had persecuted Christians, including Nicholas. Christianity then flourished, replacing Greek and Roman Pagan deities, becoming the primary religion. However, after the Seljuk Turks’ conquest (11th–13th centuries) and with the Ottoman Empire’s long reign (14th–20th centuries), the dominant religion in this land, evangelized by the Apostle Paul, became Islam. Today, after the expulsion of Greek Christians in 1922, 99.8%*of Turkish people are Muslim, though Turkey is officially a secular state. In the early 1950s Turks realized that the Bishop of Myra, Saint Nicholas, was none other than the western world’s Santa Claus or Father Christmas. Just as the good saint had brought pilgrims to Myra, and later to Bari, Italy, it was hoped he would again attract tourists and pilgrims with their lira, euros, and dollars. Turkey issued a Santa Claus stamp in 1955, drawing further attention to St. Nicholas’ relationship to this place. Since 1981 regular events somewhat related to the good saint have been held under the sponsorship of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Anatalyan governor’s office. The first Father Christmas Symposium, held in 1983, has become an annual event, lasting about a week over the 6th of December, St. Nicholas Day. Religious and scientific people come from many countries for the Activities for World Peace with Santa Claus, including the Santa Claus Peace Award. This led to the establishment in 1991 of the Santa Claus Foundation to promote peace, friendship and brotherhood. For many years an Orthodox liturgy was held in the Church of St. Nicholas on the 6th of December, St. Nicholas Day. This was the only service held in the church and it was not allowed from 2002-2006. Government permission was again
granted in 2007. However, in January 2008 the name of the St. Nicholas Church (Aziz Nicholas Kilisesi) was officially changed to Father Christmas Museum (Noel Baba Müzesi). This may prevent such a service.
A first ever Easter ritual was held in the museum (church) in 2011. The ritual, led by a priest of the Fener Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Istanbul, was attended by around 600 people from various countries, including Greece. Beginning in 2009 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has encouraged tourism companies to partner with a desitnation wedding company to promote Demre as a wedding site. The International St. Nicholas in Demre, Antalya, Wedding Festival offers a week-long schedule of activities, including Turkish traditions, culminating with a joint group (10-25 couples) civil, not religious, wedding ceremony in the Demre St. Nicholas “museum” on December 6th. In today’s predominantly Muslim Turkey, commercial interests promote Santa Claus to encourage gift giving at New Year’s. So Western Santa, Noel Baba, is sometimes seen in shopping areas, on the streets, or in schools. Saint Nicholas is remembered in the land of his birth as a person who cared for all people, especially children. He is appreciated for his caring, humanitarian values, and also because he gives a boost to tourism and the economy.
