Remove visa or don’t await Turkish tourists! European Court of Justice assigned that visa exemption doesn’t include Turkish tourists. You are not giving visa to Turkish tourists, requesting several documents, hampering visa processes, and asking 60 euro for 1 month visa – and you wait many Turkish tourists visit your country. In order to have more tourists, you are organizing several workshops. Don’t spend your money in vain. First talk with tourism professionals of your country. Then talk together with your country’s politicians. Tell them that we need to welcome more Turkish tourists but they can’t come because of visa. Tell them that we are going to Turkey without having a visa, but we are not letting them in without a visa. First study visa issues in your country, ease visa process, or remove visa then come and promote your country in order to welcome more Turkish tourists. In this issue you will find a cultural old town of Turkey, Safranbolu which has 1008 registered historical artifacts as 1 private museum, 25 mosques, 5 tombs, 8 historical fountains, 5 Turkish baths, 3 caravanserais, 1 historical clock tower, 1 sundial and hundreds of houses and mansions.

Turkey Top Destination for Tourists in Europe
At a time of global economic crisis, tourists preferred Turkey over Europe to spend their holidays, World Tourism
Organization (UNWTO) figures have revealed. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Özgür Özaslan said that while the increase in the number of tourists hovered around 4 percent in Europe, the same figure stood at around 8 percent for Turkey. The growth in the tourism sector was expected to be around 4 percent on a global scale, he said, adding that expectations had been realized. Stating that for developed countries the increase was 3.3 percent, for developing countries it was 4.6 percent and for Europe it was 5 percent. “The growth rate for Turkey stood at 8.6 percent for the last 8 months. That means the growth is double that of Europe and 2.5 times more than the global figures,” Özaslan said. He also noted that the World Tourism Organization estimated growth for the 20102020 period to be 2.7 percent, and 1.8 percent for 20202030 period, but the growth would exceed that of Europe.

Istanbul will be Promoted with The “You Can” Concept
TUGEV-Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau and Istanbul Chamber of Commerce finalized their new marketing and promotional activity entitled - The Leading Congress Destination Istanbul project. This was partly in response to the fact that Istanbul first broke into the world’s Top 10 Congress Destinations in 2010 and subsequently became the world’s number one congress destination with more than 500 delegates in 2011 & 2012 (ICCA statistics). Within the overall scope of the project, Istanbul created a destination film, congress tourism website and promotional kit. Created around the needs of meetings organisers, event planners and congress delegates; the destination film includes dramatic aerial shots and highlights the city’s venues; whilst brochures, maps, and DVDs will make up the kit. With its unique location spanning Asia and Europe, its history and natural beauty, and its international accommodation and convention facilities, Istanbul offers attractive opportunities for the meetings and events industry. The Project aims to contribute to the efforts intended to improve the ranking of Istanbul from top 10 to 5 among the world’s leading congress cities by 2015. The new Istanbul logo, having the shape of a tulip and symbolizing Turkey and Turkey’s tourism logo, is intended to ensure continuity and wider recognition. The traditional tulip form comes with a modern touch, with its petals in the shape of a drop of water being colored with the colors of Turkey’s tourism logo; turquoise, red and green. The petals symbolize the communication and connections. When presenting Istanbul, the Project uses the heading ‘You Can...’, as the core concept, and then the subtitles, You Can Visit, You Can Fly, You Can Meet, You Can Experience, You Can Stay, and You Can Taste, referring to what the city has to
offer and the city’s unique features, and finally closes with the slogan ‘Istanbul. The Best Place to Connect’. The film, produced for the Project “Istanbul: Leading Congresses Destination” in two versions, each running 3 and 7 minutes, respectively, features 2 international congress delegates telling about Istanbul and what the city has to offer to congress organizations. The film was produced by a production team of 25 in 20 days and at over 100 different locations. The film, the editing process of which took nearly 3 months, comes in 5 different languages: Turkish, English, German, French and Spanish. The film is a combination of timelapse videos, produced using a special technique to present the viewer a 24-hour panorama of Istanbul in only 24 seconds. Produced using only natural daylight, the film presents a natural, intimate and trustable atmosphere. Also an original music has been composed.
Renovation Completed at Library of Manuscripts in Istanbul
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has recently completed a significant renovation project in the Yazma Eserler Muzesi (“The Library of Manuscripts”) located in the Topkapi Palace Museum. The Library is currently home to 21,438 books; 18,622 of which are manuscripts, 2,816 are rare print works and over ten thousand miniature paintings can be found among 600 manuscripts. The Library was built in 1928 and combined the works previously spread across 13 libraries in The Agalar Mosque. Having undergone renovation, it has now become a modern home to the rarest and most significant works in Islamic history. The notable works include Shahnameh (1330-31), Piri Reis World Map (1513), Jami’ al-tawarikh (“Compendium of Chronicles”), Kitab-ı Bahriye (“Book of Navigation”), Divan-i Hazik, Selimname and Surname of Sultan Murat III (“Book of Festivities”). One of the most significant books in the Library is the Ahmet Karahisari Quran (referred to as “Ahmet Karahisari Mushaf-i Serifi”) created by the Ehl-i Serif (“Community of the Talented”) of the Ottoman Palace. 220 pages of the Quran were written by Karahisari between the years 1545-55 during

the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. The book was left unfinished when the artist was deceased. The last 80 pages of the Quran were written by Hasan Celebi between 1584-87 during Sultan Murat III’s reign, and the Quran is believed to have been completed sometime between 1584-96. The Library also hosts the Piri Reis World Map (1513). As a rare world map from the 16th century, produced by Ottoman admiral and cartographer of the same name, the work is an invaluable piece of the world’s documentary heritage. This year has been declared “The Year of Piri Reis” by UNESCO to mark 500 years since its creation. The Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in the UK are currently organising press trips to Istanbul which will include a visit to the Library of Manuscripts as well as a tour around the historically and culturally significant sites in Istanbul.

Turkey, Greece must Boost Med tourism Turkey’s European Union Minister Egemen Bağış has urged that Turkey and Greece should enhance their relations particularly for cooperation on eastern Mediterranean tourism, during the Mediterranean Luxury Travel Summit 2013 in Athens. this $1 trillion cake?” he asked. Turkey wants to make its relations with Greece reach the highest level and believes that a profitable cooperation will found the basis of an eastern Mediterranean region with abundance and success. The minister recalled that Turkey raised its trade with Greece by 100 percent in the last 10 years, but a bilateral trade volume of around 4 billion euros wasn’t enough. “Greek Prime Minister Samaras visited Turkey a couple of months ago in order to negotiate a memorandum of understanding for a TurkeyGreece High Level Cooperation Agreement. If we all want to advance our cooperation, these steps should be taken,” he said. The two countries have potential in many fields like energy, security and economic dynamism. Bağış said Turkey was the sixth most visited country in the world. The number of tourists rose from 13 million in 2002 to 30 million last year, he said, adding that they aimed to raise it to 50 million. They expected Turkey to host more than 37 million tourists by the end of this year. The value of exchange spent by tourists reached 16.5 billion, he added. Their 2023 target for tourism was to place Turkey within the top-five list, he said.

Australian artist Nicholas Mangan Participated in the 13th Istanbul Biennial
The Australian Embassy proudly supports the participation of Nicholas Mangan from Australia in the 13th Istanbul Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts from 14 September to 10 November 2013. The notion of the public domain as a political forum will be the focal point of the 13th Istanbul Biennial. This highly contested concept will serve as a matrix to generate ideas and forms on other controversial subjects such as: civilization and barbarism; democracy; spatio-economic justice; and the role of contemporary art. Nicholas Mangan will be presenting his work A World Undone, which is an eponymous film that captures crushed geological matter from Jack Hills in airborne flux. Fulya Erdemci, curator of the 13th Istanbul Biennial believes that this work unfolds the Biennial’s main focus. Nicholas Mangan was born in Geelong, Victoria in 1979. He currently lives and works in Melbourne. Mangan completed a two year studio residency at Gertrude Contemporary,

EMITT 2014 to Focus on Health & Wellness industry The EMITT 2014 Fair, aiming to raise the bar of Turkey’s health care, aesthetics, thermal and SPA tourism, is allocating an entire 2,000 square meter hall at TUYAP to all establishments of health care and healthy living industries. This Fair will provide these agencies the opportunity to meet 60,000 industry professionals among 140,000 visitors from 70 countries. In a groundbreaking move, East Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (EMITT) to take place at TÜYAP Exhibition Center in Beylikdüzü for the 18th edition will assign an entire hall to health care, aesthetics, thermal and spa tourism, thanks to the efforts of IDA Consulting and b2b Medical Encounters’ Project Consultant M. Ergun Güvenç. The EMITT 2014 Fair, seeking to raise Turkey’s health tourism status which encourages the country’s potential in sustaining a diverse tourism sector for future business ventures, further aims to become the venue for Turkey’s leading hospitals and health care clinics, specifically thermal and SPA resorts, in addition to meet both domestic and international companies of the sector in order to provide a significant contribution to Turkey’s health care tourism industry. Touching upon how inaccurate the perception that health care tourism basically equates seeking low-cost medical care in other countries, Ekin Fair Director Hacer Aydın highlights that the industry has a far extending reach, extending from plastic surgery to aesthetic centres, from health care, SPA and thalassotherapy centres to physiotherapy resorts, from health care tourism agencies to assistance companies, and from health accommodations to health insurance companies, to also include all cosmetic agencies and even non-governmental organisations. Emphasizing Turkey’s high potential in health care tourism due its geographical location coupled with its strong health care infrastructure, Aydın affirms that the country is currently the leading health care tourism centre throughout the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Middle East, highlighting that no obstacles stand in its way from becoming one of Europe’s leading health care headquarters in the light of its current strength. Aydın further maintains that health care tourism currently has the highest added value among its contenders and that the EMITT Fair will ensure a first in this direction, becoming a leader in the sector. Indicating that Turkey accommodates some of the leading world-class hospitals and clinics, vision and dental facilities, hair transplant centres, thermal plants, medicinal mineral water sources, aesthetic and wellness centres, as well as SPA and wellness resorts, Aydın argues that the country stands as a leading example in the sector, with its strong and expert health care and healthy living infrastructure combined with its historical and cultural wealth.
In fact, maintaining that the exhibition of ‘health care tourism’ alongside all other touristic wealth, being a global advantage, Aydın underscores that Turkey will benefit in the long run being a wealthy country in terms of its current potential. Aydın adds that individuals selecting other countries in seeking medical care also benefit from that country’s cultural and touristic heritage, and of course will want to go shopping and require accommodations, to name a couple of services they will seek. This, Aydın emphasizes, is where Turkey must display an excellent introduction of its advantages in health care tourism to the rest of the world. Going beyond regional boundaries to reach the global market Aydın has also addressed that all health care and healthy living agencies participating in the EMITT 2014 Fair, the 5th largest globally and the leading tourism fair regionally, will have the opportunity to directly meet more than 900 travel agency directors and 200 direct buyewrs, in addition to having the opportunity to participate in various symposia and seminars to become familiar with the most recent advances in the global health care tourism front. Asserting that EMITT 2014 Fair will provide all participants the added advantage of trade mark proficiency globally, Aydın again points out health care tourism as the fastest growing among its contenders in the field. Adding that Turkey has all qualifications for health care tourism industry thanks to its modern thermal plants and medicinal mineral water reserves, along with world-class infrastructure with the most recent technological equipment, as well as a staff of specialized physicians in hospitals and clinics, and the 6th largest aesthetic and beauty centre in the world, Aydın basically maintains that EMITT, being a highly cherished fair on an international scale, will make a huge contribution in this front. Touching upon the importance of proficiency in tourism, Aydın states that in spite of its advantages in terms of facilities, geographical location and natural beauty in the Mediterranean, Turkey still faces competition on the tourism front. Meanwhile, Aydın says, Turkey has the potential to become a leader in health care tourism front with the ability to reap profits. Health care industry present at EMITT All eyes of those who want to have their voices heard and advance towards global trade marks in this sector have already been set on EMİTT 2014 Fair. All hospitals and clinics, vision and dental facilities, IVF centres, dialysis clinics, physiotherapy centres, plastic surgery and aesthetic centres, hair transplantation centres, weight loss clinics, health accommodations, SPA and thalassic resorts, mineral water sources and facilities, health tourism agencies, insurance companies, assistance companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment supply companies, cosmetics companies, food and bio-natural beverage companies, nongovernmental organisations and the media are getting ready to participate in the 2014 EMITT Fair.

Equalising their yearly overnight stay already from the 3rd Quarter onwards and hosting guests from 45 countries all over the globe Cornelia Hotels became one of Antalya’s most preferred resorts in 2013.
Despite growth the Russian market is not up to our expectations Indicating that the Russian market showed fragility in 2012 Cornelia Diamond Golf Resort & Spa General Manager Zafer Alkaya stated: “This fragility continues to a certain extent. The Russian tourist does not primarily consider Antalya anymore. As the Russian tourist’s financial power increases they wish to travel more and discover different destinations. Spain, Italy, Greece, Thailand and the Maldives have started to be part of the Russian tourist’s choices. In 2012, the number of Russian

tourists in Spain reached 1.5 million. In the first half of 2013, Spain recorded an increase of 33% which shows that they will have hosted 2 million Russians by the end of this year. The Spaniards have started to seriously weaken our stand in the Russian market with their new price advantages, brand-image advantages, activities specifically for Russians, shopping facilities and conveniences provided to tour operators.”

Seychelles to Attend EMITT 2014 in Istanbul
The Seychelles, ranking at the top of the list of Turkey’s favourite tropical vacations, is preparing to reveal its natural wonders to exhibition attendees. Seychelles Tourism Regional Director for Turkey Monette Rose will also be at the fair to assist everyone in displaying the Republic to all Turkish vacationers. Monette Rose, Regional Director of Seychelles Tourism in Turkey, emphasises that there has been a significant rise in the number of Turkish tourists in recent years. She warrants this in largely due to business ventures with tour operators, and also points to EMITT’s role in promoting the country. Rose specifies this year’s target is to not only attract former tourists to the islands but to further attract new guests who have never visited the Seychelles. Testifying to the Seychelles being a tropic heaven on earth consisting of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, Hacer Aydın, Director of Ekin Fair, points out that more than half of the Republic’s land is currently under environmental protection. She adds that two of the world’s highest raised coral islands of Vallee da Mai and Aldabra are a part of Seychelles. As one of UNESCO World Heritage sites, these islands contain natural reserves and parks. Aydın reveals that the Seychelles are an exciting destination for
all nature and ecotourism lovers, accentuating that the country is a land of variety, beauty and wonders. Touching upon the bursting, colourful appearance of the country’s fauna and flora, Aydın further informs us that the islands are one of the riches leading sea bird colonies and thousand year old tropical forests that accommodate all. There are organised yacht, aircraft and helicopter tours among the islands of Seychelles, points out Aydın, with countless natural beaches throughout the country. Aydın, touching upon how there is another heaven underwater, notes that visitors will be able to see thousands of different tropical fish and take a peek at the 12m giant sharks that live strictly on plankton. She further specifies that the Seychelles islands are ideal for those who love water sports, especially those tourists who like to go fishing - since the archipelago offers deep sea fishing adventures. Furthermore, the islands offer golf-lovers the most advanced resorts continues Aydın, adding that their tourism foundation is state-of-the-art in all respects. She says that the natives are warm, sincere and always cheerful - offering wonderful vacation memories that will keep guests in awe for years to come. Becoming one of Turkish tourists’ leading spots of attraction in recent years, the Republic of Seychelles will once again take part at this year’s East Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (EMITT). Recognising that tourism is the source of a huge portion of its national income, the Republic aims to enchant more Turkish tourists. EMITT is due to take place at TÜYAP in Istanbul from 30 January - 3 February 2014.

In 2012 alone it flew 13.6 million guests and during the first six months 7.55 million guests. It was also named the fastest growing airline of Europe’s 25 largest airlines (in terms of seat capacity) for both 2011 and 2012 by the Official Airline Guide (OAG). The airline has an innovative and successful business model, which dynamically incorporates its guests’ wants and needs, with the transparent reporting of Pegasus flights’ on-time performance and its commitment to good-value pricing forming part of the company’s “evolving low-cost model” in direct response to feedback from its guests. During 2012 the rate of delivering its guests to their destination on time was 92.1% and for the first six months of 2013 91.51%. Pegasus has the youngest fleet of aircraft in Turkey, with its Next-Generation Boeing 737-800s having an average age of just 3.49 years. In 2012 Pegasus made the single largest-ever aircraft order in Turkish civil aviation history at the time of approximately US$12 billion (list price) for 100 new Airbus aircraft (of which 25 are optional). On 26 April 2013, Pegasus offered a 34.5% stake of itself to the public and began trading on the Istanbul Stock Exchange with the code ‘PGSUS’. Continuously expanding, Pegasus flies a scheduled service to 44 destinations in Europe, the Middle East, Russia and the Caucasus as well as 29 destinations within Turkey, taking its guests to 73 destinations in 30 countries.
Turkish Air Transport Officials Sign Declaration to Encourage Growth of Business Aviation Activity
During a high-level regional forum held 10 and11 October, hosted by the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), the General Directorate of State Airports Authority of the Republic of Turkey (DHMI) proclaimed that business aviation plays a crucial role in facilitating regional investment and subsequently has a direct economic impact on Turkey’s economy. To that
end, the Director General co-signed a declaration together with EBAA that commits to working together on long-term actions that would help ensure the steady growth of the sector in the country. These include improving access of business aircraft to the infrastructure, and ensuring that the region’s legal framework and policies have a positive impact on daily air transport activities. “Understanding the distinct nature of business aviation as a tool for efficient, productive and secure business travel to and from the nearest airport to the passengers’ destination is absolutely essential. Catering for this distinction will enable Turkey to reap the benefits of a thriving sector and the subsequent rewards its activity will deliver to the economy,” said Fabio Gamba, CEO European Business Aviation Association. With a population of 75 million and an economic growth average of 4% in the last decade, Turkey has developed into a geo-strategic base for international business. The forum was important in evidencing that Turkey has all the prerequisites to continue growing its business aviation industry and further establish itself as an important commercial hub connecting Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Identifying possible impediments to expanding Turkey’s business aircraft activity, with a view to tackling them together with local authorities, was the main purpose of this Regional Forum. This successful format will be repeated around Europe, where and when appropriate.

On the back of this robust operating performance Free Cash Flow generation enjoyed a 61% increase and reached €105 million. Safranbolu,

fter my participation in the EMITT, I headed to Safranbolu, in Karabuk Province. This was my second visit in the city, and I have to say that people from the Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs have improved public services and the infrastructure. For example, there are new signs accross the city center and neighboorhoods - wooden-made – obviously, in a land as it was, surrounded by hills and valleys! These fully coloured plackards sign maps and indications of how to reach the turistic points of interest. They have also three new citycars used by the Municipality to their guests,
very colorful and charming, patterned with illustrations of their houses ! Quıte funny! People from the Municipality is committed with the preparations of the furthercoming INTERNATIONAL GOLDEN SAFRON DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL, in its 12th edition, which will take place in September, from 16th to 18th. And the very good news ıs that this time they are dealing with European Documentary and Amatorial Film Festivals in order to exchange coverage and promotion of the event with Film Journalists. I was positively surprised by the fact that one of the ancient Ottoman houses in the historical city center , has just been fully restored. Safranbolu Houses exist and survive for more than 200 of years, in a process that continues to live in this Turkish city of culture. These houses are today the most important building group in Ottoman architectural style worldwide. Across the district there are about 2000 traditional Turkish houses, which were built in 18th,.19th an early 20th century. About 800 of these masterpieces are under legal protection. The Otthoman houses were basically constructed in a way to be divided into two distinct bodies: the first to be used by the

family for storage and stalls, on the ground floor; the second one used.on daily life. Likewise, the landlords of Safranbolu used to have two different houses into and outside the district . They spent the months of Winter – windly but not extreme - in the Konak (“Mansion”). In Summertime the family used to move to settle for 4 or 5 months in the other house – called Baglar - different to each other basically for the kind of wood used on their construction, and in the areas devoted to open-air activities. Safranbolu city takes its name from Saffron flower ( Zaafaran): the most expensive aromathic plant on earth. This plant is still being cultivated in the surroundings of the District.

Seen the gastronomic value and appeal of the Saffron, it deserves a new article completely dedicated to its wonders ! The “Imren Lokum Konak”, an old Ottoman house opened for visitors as the onlyest Boutique Hotel in Safranbolu City. During my visit to Safranbolu, I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in a charming Boutique Hotel, the onlyest in the city and surroundings. Let me tell you about “Imren Lokum Konak”. İt is an old Ottoman house belonging to a traditional family from Safranbolu District. After being restored by heirs of this family, headed by Hidayet Sezer – founder and owner of a traditional Confectioner of Lokum - the so-called “Turkish Delight” – this historical residence with its unique style was oppened to visitors in 2009. Just upon your arrival, they welcome you offering a tray of their “Imren Lokum”, in their multiple shapes and fillings (also with saffran flavor, needless to say) – served together with the typical small glasses of çay, during your check-in. İ may assure you that its wooden ceilings, windows and balustrades, floors, cupboards, doors and roof - which are “key” in Ottoman Architectural style – are very well conserved after more than 200 years.
The whole residence is adorned with woodworkings particular to Safranbolu. You will feel the scent of the Yellow Pine, the Fir and the Walnut. By the way, the restaurant opens to the inner garden, and a fireplace matchs with a small fountain carved from a single piece of stone.. And the Manager – Mr. Mehmet çetin - was proud to show me all the photos of his ancestors, wich covers the walls of the corridors, enlighted with kerosene lamps. They also have a collection of historical items that bellonged to their families. Each of their 18 room is delicatedly decorated with highquality Turkish cotton linen. and tapestry-lined pillows. Not to mention the handmade embroideries which made me feel crazy for them ! So charming ! Good-tasted guys and Fashion-addict ladies would love for having some of this stuff in their own homes! Imren Konak Boutique Hotel deserves more time of our attention, and not only a couple of paragraphs ! It would be a pitty not to show this hidden charmful hotel to readers, Turism Professionals and traveladdicted as I am ! But I promise I will get back to this issue. Safranbolu is a town and district of Karabük Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It is about 200 kilometres north of Ankara and about a 100 km south of the Black Sea coast, or more precisely about 9 km north of the city of Karabük. Former Turkish names of the town were Zalifre and Taraklıborlu and in Greek Theodoroupolis and latter Saframpolis. It was part of Karabük Province until 1923 and Zonguldak Province between 1923 and 1995. According to the 2000 census, the population of the district is 47,257, of which 31,697 live in the town of Safranbolu. The district covers an area of 1,000 km2 and the town lies at an elevation of 485 m. The Old Town preserves many old buildings, with 1008 registered historical artifacts. fountains, 5 Turkish baths, 3 caravanserais, 1 historical clock tower, 1 sundial and hundreds of houses and mansions. Also there are mounds of ancient settlements, rock tombs and historical bridges. The Old Town is situated in a deep ravine in a fairly dry area in the rain shadow of the mountains. The New Town can be found on the plateau about two kilometers west of the Old Town. The name of the town derives from ‘saffron’ and the Greek word ‘polis’ (city), since Safranbolu was a trading place and a center for growing saffron. Today saffron is still grown at the village of Davutobası which is 22 km east of Safranbolu and probably one of the best quality saffrons in the world. Safranbolu was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1994 due to its well-preserved Ottoman era houses and architecture.

International Tourist Numbers Grow in All Regions
In the first eight months of the year, international tourist arrivals grew by 5% to reach a record 747 million worldwide, some 38 million more than in the same period of 2012. After a solid start of the year, demand for international tourism maintained strength throughout the Northern Hemisphere peak season. The months of June to August have shown sound results – in absolute numbers, international arrivals topped 125 million in both July and August, while in June the 100 million arrivals mark was exceeded for the first time. “While global economic growth is in low gear, international tourism continues to produce above average results in most world regions, offering vital opportunities for employment and local economies,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai at the Opening of the European Tourism Forum in Vilnius. “This is particularly important for Europe, where unemployment is a major concern in many destinations and where the tourism sector has been a source of job growth in the last decade. Furthermore, through its value chain, tourism creates businesses and jobs in many other sectors and produces significant export revenues which contribute favourably to the balance of payments in many countries,” he added. Europe (+5%) benefited the most from the growth of tourism in the first eight months of 2013, with an estimated 20 million more arrivals in the region. Given that Europe is the world’s largest tourism region with many mature destinations, a 5% growth rate is very positive. Central and Eastern Europe (+7%) and Southern and Mediterranean Europe (+6%) performed particularly well. Asia and the Pacific (+6%) continued to show robust growth bolstered by South-East Asia (+12%) adding some ten million arrivals. The Americas (+3%), which gained four million additional arrivals in the first eight months of the year,

This is a new set of accolades launched by News International. Matthew Dixon, General Manager of Corinthia Hotel London said: “We are delighted to have received this award and my congratulations go to all our exceptional staff who made this happen. This award is particularly gratifying as it was based on the votes of actual travellers and readers, as opposed to industry voting for industry or being an award that entrants pay to enter. It is based entirely on the experience and perceptions of our guests.” The award was announced in Malta and presented by veteran Polar explorer Ranulph Fiennes. Where is Europe’s No.1 golf destination?
A new study of European golfers revealed the No.1 travel destination for visitors from the UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia. Spain is selected as the number 1 travel destination that more than 28% of respondents playing golf in the country over the past 12 months. The findings form part of a new research document entitled ‘European Spotlight on Golf Tourism to Spain’, which was commissioned by Reed Travel Exhibitions, organisers of IGTM (November 11-14, 2013, Costa Daurada, Catalonia, Spain), and produced by SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. Of the 28.5% of golfers who travelled to Spain to play golf, 12.7% went to the Costa del Sol, 3.9% went to the Costa Brava region, 3.2% visited the Canary Islands and 8.7% went to other areas. The research also revealed the popularity of other destinations with 17% visiting Portugal, 16.1% travelling to Great Britain & Ireland, 7.5% booking trips to Turkey, 7.1% visiting France and 6.9% booking long-haul golf trips to the USA. The in-depth research also highlighted: - The average duration for a Spanish golf trip is seven nights - Golf visitors to Spain predominantly stay in four and five-star accommodation - Visiting golfers spend between €170 (British golfers) to €230 (Scandinavians) per day
- Golfers arrange between five and six rounds of golf during each Spanish holiday - During the course of a week’s holiday, golfers play up to four different Spanish courses. The Spanish study also revealed that a golfer’s nationality impacts on their choice of region they are likely to visit, with British and Scandinavian golfers preferring the Costa del Sol; French golfers more likely to visit Costa Brava; and German golfers travelling to all regions, including the Canary Islands. Peter Grimster, IGTM Exhibition Manager, said: “This latest study proves that Spain remains at the heart of the European golf tourism industry and illustrates why thousands of golfers still put its golfing regions at the top of their wish list.” Some of the key contributing factors that put Spain ahead of its rivals was the standard and range of the country’s golf courses, consistent levels of high quality accommodation and the favourable year-round climate. Peter added: “As Spain is the host country for this year’s IGTM we will, of course, be welcoming a host of representatives from across the country, including 100 resorts, clubs and tourist boards, showcasing the country’s finest golf spots including host destination Catalonia, as well as Andalucía and the Balearic and Canary Islands.” As host to IGTM 2013, the Catalan region of Costa Daurada is rapidly growing its reputation as a golf destination. Three years ago, less than 2% of total rounds played on the Costa Daurada were by international golfers. Today, that ratio has increased to 30% and continues to grow. A summary of the report, with some additional findings, will be presented at IGTM, the premier global event for golf tourism, taking place at the PortAventura Convention Centre, Costa Daurada, Catalonia, Spain, November 11-14, 2013. ILTM Spa 2013 Defines the Future of the Industry The inaugural International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM) Spa event in London opened this week with a high profile Forum, where a panel of experts presented their visions for the industry and discussed the evolution of the destination spa. This was followed by two days of business between some of the world’s top spa destinations, resorts and retreats, who met with buyers from 20 countries, all of whom specialise in luxury leisure programmes with specific interest in spa and wellness travel. Gauging the effect of this first event, exhibitors and buyers alike praised the ability to network with the industry and meet with so many spa and wellness specialists. Astrid Oberhummer, who represents Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in Switzerland said “It’s difficult in this industry to find networks that specialise in the sector and ILTM Spa has been absolutely the place to do this. The event has met all my expectations and it has been good to meet face-to-face with buyers who are spread all over the world, but who have been brought to London to meet with us”. Ane Ugarte, Sales & Marketing Director for Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort chose to attend based on her experience of being an exhibitor at ILTM Cannes for the past eight years. “I decided to participate in ILTM Spa because of the success of Cannes, 90% of the Hosted Buyers we have met with here were totally new to us. I love the 20-minute business meeting format, I will be coming back”. Na Tasukon, Director of Marketing for Chiva-Som said:
“ILTM Spa has been so successful for us on many levels. There have been buyers from new markets for us, like Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic, Israel and South Africa. Some of them were the only people in these countries specialising in spa right now – they are the pioneers. The two days have unequivocally been value for money and I have already committed to come back in 2014”. Also a speaker at the ILTM opening Spa Forum, Na explained to the audience of exhibitors and buyers that; “Spa is clearly shifting into wellness which has been reflected in what the buyers also want. It’s all about measurability of results, evidence based treatments, and this will then lead to repeat business, which is what we all want. The Hosted Buyers came from 20 countries including the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, USA, Israel, Germany, China, Azerbaijan and UAE and undertook over 1,360 business appointments over two days with exhibitors from Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, Middle East and North America. Alison Gilmore Senior Exhibition Director, ILTM Portfolio said that this inaugural event for London proved how this niche sector of the travel industry deserves its own spotlight. “Whilst this year was just 37 exhibitors and 37 Hosted Buyers, we can see how important its been from a business perspective not only through the appointments and comments from both sides, but also at the networking events where the business continued to be discussed. We want ILTM Spa to grow and from the support already for 2014, it looks like we are on track to provide what this industry needs, its own annual event and Forum”. ILTM Spa will take place in London from 1-3 October in 2014.

NewFocus
