New Site in Turkey was Added to UNESCO World Heritage List
The ancient Neolithic Site of Çatalhöyük was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 1 during the World Heritage Committee meeting held in St. Petersburg, making this the 11th UNESCO recognized site in Turkey. Located in the province of Konya in the Central Anatolia, Çatalhöyük is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. The wall paintings in the ancient city are regarded as some of humanity’s earliest artworks. Çatalhöyük is made up of two hills on 34 acres on the Southern Anatolian Plateau. The taller mound to the east includes wall paintings, reliefs, sculptures and other symbolic elements that show 18 different levels of Neolithic occupation between 7,400 and 6,200 B.C. These
profound findings illustrate the adaptation of human social organization and cultural practices within a very sedentary lifestyle. The mound to the west dates back to 6,200 to 5,200 B.C. during the Chalcolithic period. The site reveals crucial evidence of the early transition from villages to urban settlements. At the site, visitors will see a group of back-to-back houses, accessible through the roof, with no streets. Other Turkish sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List include Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, Great Mosque and Hospital of Divriği, Historic Areas of Istanbul, Hattusha: the Hittite Capital, Nemrut Dağ, Hierapolis-Pamukkale, XanthosLetoon, City of Safranbolu, Archaeological Site of Troy, and Selimiye Mosque and its Social Complex. The World Heritage List includes 962 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 745 cultural, 188 natural and 29 mixed properties in 157 countries. As of March 2012, 189 countries have ratified the World Heritage Convention.

Turkey Aims to be Health Tourism Hub Turkey aims to become a second Dubai in terms of special health services designed to target health tourism, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, thermal spa facilities, care facilities for the elderly and holiday villages. The creation of special health zones and healing centers in Turkey is underway and drawing the attention of foreign investors, Dursun Aydın, head of the
Health Tourism Department of the Turkish Ministry of Health, told Anatolia News Agency. With the new legal code, the ministry plans to develop health tourism and create a model concept for the rest of the health sector in the region, Aydın said. In achieving this goal, the ministry also plans to improve the inflow of foreign investment, increase employment, bring in skilled foreign healthcare workers, speed up the use of medical technology and encourage the production of services and investments, he added. Dubai and Iran have special heath zones and healing centers, but the Iranian health zone is currently still in the project phase, Aydın said. Oman, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica and Mexico are also planning to set up special health zones. The announcement of management firms for Turkey’s health zones will be made in December, and investment, building and zoning operations will begin next year, Aydın said.
Antalya Most Trusted Tourism Spot The southern province of Antalya, one of Turkey’s premiere tourism destinations, has been chosen as the most trusted tourism destination among Germans along with Mallorca, according to 4,000 travel agencies surveyed by a Turkish tourism portal. “Some 95 percent of the elderly, 85 percent of families with children and 70 percent of the youth find Antalyatrustable. Antalya has become the most trusted destination of Germanfamilies,” said Hüseyin Baraner, the representative for Turkey at TUI AG (Touristik Union International), aGerman multinational travel and tourism company headquartered in Hanover. “The elderly and children feel safe the most during vacations in Antalya,” he said, noting that some of the reasons respondents distrusted other places was poor infrastructure. “It is a source of pride that Antalya has been chosen as the most trusted destination shining out among other destinations.” Families with children visit Antalya the most among all the destinations in the world, he said, adding that nearly 3 million children and youth came to Antalya last year. “You may think [as an adult] that ‘nothing

will happen to me’ and just go to some place,” he said, but added that families never considered going to an “unsafe” place. The most important criterion for tourists going on holiday is ultimately “safety,” he said, noting that this proved how safe the southern Turkish province was. It was particularly meaningful that Antalya is the most visited destination despite economic crises in the European and Russian markets, he said. Falling crude oil prices may drag down the number of Russian tourists coming to Turkey, but German tourists, who have been long-time loyal customers of the Turkish tourism industry, may be the industry’s savior this year, an hotelier from the southern province of Antalya, also known as the capital of tourism, has said. “There is a danger particularly about Russia. The number of Russian tourists drops in tandem with falling crude oil [prices]. Germans will likely be the saviors of Turkish tourism,” Aktay Tourism Investment and Enterprises Chief Executive Vadi Karatopraklı said, noting that all figures regarding local tourism data are dropping this year, according to a report by daily Hürriyet. The number of tourists traveling to Turkey dropped 5 percent in the first five months of the year, compared to the same period last year. The decrease in the number ofRussian tourists seen this year is about 15 percent, Karatopraklı said, adding that the number would likely fall further in the coming years. “We should woo 5.5 million high-income German consumers. If we can attract them, Turkish tourism will offset the blow from [the low number of] Russians.” The number of Iranian tourist fell by 80 percent this year, he said.

3,000 - year- old Sculpture of Hittite King Suppiluliuma Discovered in Turkey
A colossal two-tonne 3,000 year-old sculpture of Hittite King Suppiluliuma is one of the latest cultural treasures to be unearthed by an international team in Tell Tayinat, an ancient site in Hatay, southeastern Turkey. Alongside the statue archaeologists found another carving, a semicircular column base bearing the images of a sphinx and a winged bull. Tayinat, a large low-lying mound, is located 35 kilometres east of Antakya (ancient Antioch). Announcing the finds, which form part of a monumental gate complex from the upper citadel of Kunulua, capital of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina (ca. 1000-738 BC), Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Gunay, said that the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism aims for these key pieces, which shed light on life in ancient Anatolia, to be exhibited at the Hatay Archaeological Museum within a year following careful restoration by a professional
team. Commenting on the newly discovered Tayinat sculptures, Timothy Harrison, professor of near eastern archaeology at the University of Toronto and director of the Tayinat Archaeological Project, which has been ongoing since 2004, said that there was a ‘very well-preserved Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription on the back’ identifying him as Hittite King Suppiluliuma. He went on to say ‘[the pieces] provide a vivid glimpse into the innovative character and sophistication of the Iron Age cultures that emerged in the eastern Mediterranean following the collapse of the great imperial powers of the Bronze Age at the end of the second millennium BC.’ The sculpture of King Suppiluliuma, a regal figure who ruled over the Neo-Hittite kingdom of Patina in the 9th century B.C., is preserved from the waist up and measures almost 1.5 meters tall, suggesting a total body length of 3.5 to four metres.
tŚŽ ŝƐ ^ƵƉƉŝůƵůŝƵŵĂ Suppiluliuma was king of the Hittites between 1344–1322 BC. He achieved fame as a great warrior and statesman, successfully challenging the then-dominant Egyptian empire for control of the lands between the Mediterranean and the Euphrates. Suppiluliuma began his career as the chief advisor and general to Tudhaliya II, then based at Samuha. In this capacity, he defeated the Hittites’ enemies among the Azzi-Hayasa and the Kaskas. Both enemies then united around charismatic leaders to counter him; of these Karanni founded a semblance of a royal court in Hayasa, and Piyapili failed to do likewise for the Kaska. Suppiluliuma and Tudhaliya defeated these threats in turn, to the extent that the Hittite court could settle in Hattusa again. When Tudhaliya II died, Tudhaliya III succeeded to the throne. Soon after his accession, however, he was overthrown and succeeded by Suppiluliuma who was the younger brother of Tudhaliya III. Some of the Hittite priests later reported this to Suppiluliumas’s son, successor, and biographer Mursili II, holding it out as an outstanding crime of the whole dynasty. Suppiluliuma married a sister to the Hayasan king Hukkana, and his daughter Muwatti to Maskhuiluwa of the Arzawan state Mira. He also married a Babylonian princess and retook Arzawan territory as far as Hapalla. His most permanent victory was against the Mitanni kingdom, which he reduced to a client state under his son-inlaw Shattiwazza. He was also a master builder of large stone structures decorated with stone reliefs. It was during his reign that concepts of the sacred nature of royal leaders developed.

The treaty he signed with the Mitannian king Matiwaza was sworn in the name of Vedic deities (Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Nasatya), indicating that these were both Aryan cultures which worshipped the same gods. Suppiluliuma then took advantage of the tumultuous reign of the Pharaoh Akhenaten, and seized control of Egyptian territory in Syria, inciting many Egyptian vassals to revolt. His success encouraged the widow (who is called Dakhamunzu in the annals) of the Egyptian king Nibhururiya (usually identified with Tutankhamun) to write to

him, asking him to send one of his sons to be her husband and rule Egypt, since she had no heir and was on the verge of being forced to marry “a servant”, usually thought to be the Egyptian general Horemheb or her late husband’s vizier Ay. Suppliluliuma dispatched an ambassador to Egypt to investigate; he reported that the situation was accurately described, and the king decided to take advantage of this windfall; unfortunately, Prince Zannanza died on the way, and the marriage alliance never was consummated. Angry letters were exchanged between Suppiluliuma and the Pharaoh Ay, who had assumed the Egyptian throne, over the circumstances of Zannanza’s death. Suppililiuma was furious at this turn of events and unleashed his armies against Egypt’s vassal states in Canaan and Northern Syria, capturing much territory. Unfortunately, many of the Egyptian prisoners carried a plague which would eventually ravage the Hittite heartland and lead to the deaths of both Suppiluliuma I and his successor, Arnuwanda II. The Deeds of Suppiluliuma, compiled after his death by his son Mursili, is an important primary source for the king’s reign. One of Suppiluliuma’s letters, addressed to Akhenaten, was preserved in the Amarna letters (EA 41) archive at Akhetaten. It expresses his hope that the good relations which existed between Egypt and Hatti under Akhenaten’s father (Amenhotep III) would continue into Akhenaten’s new reign.

European Tourism Trends & Prospects in 2012 In the first half of 2012 European travel has exhibited some resilience in the face of the weak and uncertain global economic environment. The European Travel Commission (ETC) has just published its second quarterly report on European Tourism in 2012 - Trends & Prospects. Air travel continues to show some encouraging signs, with European airline passenger growth around 6% through mid-June while load factors have strengthened. The global economy is restrained by government austerity and a softening in export demand with leading indicators suggesting most major economies are slowing. In response to deteriorating economic conditions, global central banks have lowered interest rates. This uncertain economic backdrop is not yet causing significant falls in tourism demand, but the trend is of slowing growth. There are signs of mixed
performance and slowing throughout Europe. Hotel data show signs of mixed performance throughout Europe. While Central and Eastern European destinations have performed well, a significant number of Southern European destinations have recorded falls in hotel occupancy during the first half of the year. Overall, a moderation in hotel occupancy rates in most European sub-regions is apparent. Latvia recorded highest with 14.9 percent increase of international arrivals year to date by March. Latvia also tops in international nights with 17.8 percent increase. Poland follows Latvia with 14 percent in international arrivals. Serbia with 15 percent and Spain with 14.7 percent follows Latvia in international nights. In hotel performance, Iceland (18.7% ytd), Russia (7.3% ytd) and Poland (6.6% ytd) tops the listing. Turkey with (-0.3% ytd) ranked at 12th place. Tourism arrivals data for the first half of 2012 reveal an uneven picture of growth in the major European source markets. Meanwhile, Russia continues to be a star performer, with strong growth in all markets. While demand in Japan continues to recover, the struggle for US market share continues.
Exposing competitive advantages to the professional public attending the largest and most important business fair in Latin America; ABAV – The Tourism Fair of the Americas is key for private companies and public agencies in the travel and tourism industry. In addition to tourism operators, airlines, technology companies, assistance card companies, car rental companies, road transport companies, hotel networks, resorts, theme parks, convention centers, sea cruises and other links of the sector´s extensive production chain, national and international tourist destinations stand out at the 2012 ABAV – The Tourism Fair of the Americas. The event´s 40th edition, which will be held from October 24 to 26 at Riocentro (RJ), will gather the major players of the market, with a confirmed record high participation of more than 50 countries competing for the preference of the increasing demand for leisure and business trips. In this unique scenario, capable of mobilizing a professional public of more than 23,000 visitors working in travel agencies, who wish to stay up-to-date to provide excellence services to their customers (of various profiles), the strong presence of public agencies that encourage and promote tourism must be highlighted. Competent public authorities invest in the event as a high-impact promotional action, motivated by the expansion of the consumer base in the domestic market, caused by the economic policy that democratizes the access of the so-called emerging mid-class to tourism, or caused by Brazil´s exposure in the media due to the World Cup and the Olympics. Seeking to win tourists through their cuisine, destinations like Bahia, for instance, expand and innovate their participation by sponsoring one of the various Aldeias dos Sabores [Flavor Villages] included in the redesigned layout of the fair, conceived for the typical high-quality
regional gastronomic options. “It will be the industry´s largest and best fair of all times held in Rio de Janeiro”. The words of Antonio Azevedo, president of the Brazilian Travel Agencies Association – ABAV, perfectly summarize the expectation of those who will have the opportunity to be part of and check the exhibitions in the three halls of the Convention Center. ABAV – The Tourism Fair of the Americas will be filled with novelties, occupying a total area of 45,000 square meters. ABAV will introduce the Espaço Corporativo [Corporate Space] in a partnership with the Brazilian Business Travel Association (Abracorp), which turns over more than R$25 billion per year in the business travel segment. This initiative attracts Convention Bureaux interested in presenting the infrastructure installed in their respective cities to the more than 600 Brazilian and foreign hosted buyers, with the purpose of hosting corporate events of various sizes, formats and segments. Other unparalleled initiatives, such as the creation of the Espaço Empreendedor [Entrepreneur Space]; training sections at Vila do Saber [Knowledge Village], and Business Rounds in partnership with SEBRAE, contribute to encourage commercial and qualification activities, such as the promotion of an international seminar on LGBT consumption, organized by ITB Berlin – the world´s largest tourism fair and a partner of ABAV. The repercussion of ABAV – The Tourism Fair of the Americas also gains renewed attention from the global press. Within less than 24 hours after the beginning of the accreditation period for communication vehicles interested in covering the event, the organization received more than 120 registrations from reporters, bloggers and freelance journalists from domestic and foreign vehicles, major press and tourism trade. Last year, approximately 500 media professionals were present, but this figure is expected to increase by at least 30%.

Providing a unique experience for travelers all around the world, Airbnb also creates the easiest way for people to monetize their extra space and showcase it to an audience of millions. The site has become one of the ways for Turkish people to participate directly in the country’s tourism industry while showcasing typical Turkish hospitality. Since Airbnb has been founded four years ago hosts in Turkey have earned more than 4 million Turkish Lira through the site. But hosts in Turkey aren’t the only ones using the site more, travelers in Turkey have more than doubled their bookings abroad. “Airbnb is bringing people around the globe together like nobody has before,” said Nate Blacharczyk, co-founder of Airbnb and Chief Technical Officer. “We see huge potential to grow our community in Turkey and are excited to expand the benefits of the sharing economy to people throughout the country.” Airbnb is growing at full speed all around the world. This time last year, the company had one office in San Francisco and had yet to reach 2 million guest nights booked. In winter 2012, Airbnb reached the 5 million nights booked threshold and expanded to 10 offices around the globe. Now, only five months after reaching 5 million, Airbnb has reached 10 million guest nights booked, effectively doubling in size and cementing its status as the market leader worldwide. Passenger Traffic Posts Strong Gains at 5% Growth Year Over Year
Global passenger markets remain buoyant with growth of almost 5% year over year for the first half of 2011 and for June 2012. While certain domestic markets have slowed in North America (+0.8%), Europe (-0.3%) and Africa (-2.4%), international passenger traffic has shown strong growth in June. Africa (+19.2%) and the Middle East (+13.9%) recovered from the sharp declines in traffic in 2011 brought on by the Arab Spring. Asia-Pacific also posted double-digit gains in international passenger traffic at +12.3%. With business confidence in a fragile state, freight traffic has been relatively
sluggish in the first half of 2012 declining by -1 percent. Nevertheless, an overall gain of +1 percent year over year was observed in June 2012. While leading freight hubs in Asia rebounded from several months of traffic declines, many key freight hubs in North America continue to experience declines in freight traffic. Although Memphis (MEM), North America’s major freight airport, achieved growth of +3%, eight of the top ten major freight airports in the United States saw declines in traffic. Domestic freight volumes in Europe were also stagnant with a decline of -1%. Conversely, freight traffic increased in the Middle East and Latin America-Caribbean by +9.2% and +3.7% respectively. ACI World’s Economics Director Rafael Echevarne commented, “Whilst overall growth is relatively uniform and stable across passenger markets from month to month, the freight market is more heterogeneous across various regions. Burgeoning markets in the Middle East and Latin America-Caribbean are less encumbered by the slowdown that is sweeping across other regions. Though the economic outlook is ominous for many major economies, emerging markets continue to be, fuelled by their strong domestic demand, and persevere despite these downside risks.”

I would like to thank everyone at Aegean for their everyday efforts and of course our passengers for their continued trust and support. It is more important than ever to prove that Greece, its companies and its people deserve such awards.” Air travellers were surveyed by telephone, questionnaires and online about their experiences with airlines on the ground and in the air during a 10-month period. Air Astana Increases 2012 First Half Revenues Kazakhstan’s Air Astana saw its revenues grow by 13% to $394 million, matched by a similar increase in passenger numbers, although net profit declined to $4.95 million. Capacity grew by 11% with the addition of an additional Boeing 757-200 and three additional Embraer 190s. Its fleet size now stands at 26 after the retirement of three of its six Fokker 50s, with the remainder due for retirement by January 2013 to be replaced by two additional E190s. The airline will take delivery of 4 new Airbus 320s and 2 new A321s from November 2012 to May 2013, and recently placed an order for four new Boeing 767-300s and three Boeing 787-8s, to be delivered from November 2013 through 2017. “The first half was challenging due to fuel price increases of more than 140% over the same period last year. The first quarter in particular was very tough.” stated Peter Foster, President of Air Astana. “The second half, traditionally our strong period, is looking more promising as fuel prices have come off slightly and cost savings in other areas kick in. All markets with the exception of Europe
continue to grow and we are confident of a 10th straight year of profitability. In particular our ‘extended home market strategy’ of developing routes to and from our near neighbours continues to gather pace. These markets are small but have terrific growth potential. I am also pleased that despite these difficult conditions we have been able to strengthen our product and service reputation, confirmed by the recent Skytrax awards.”

Second Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental Delivered to Lufthansa Since the beginning of June, Lufthansa’s first Boeing 747-8 has been deployed on the Frankfurt-Washington route. Only a few days ago, Lufthansa took delivery of its second B747-8, which will operate a daily service between Frankfurt and New Delhi from 6 August. Before the new “Queen of the Skies”, which bears the registration D-ABYC, enters service, the final touches will be added to the aircraft at its home base at Frankfurt. On board, Lufthansa passengers can enjoy the new Business Class, which includes a seat that can be converted at the press of a button into a horizontal sleeping surface measuring 1.98 metres in length. The new seat offers exceptional comfort for passengers in a sitting or recumbent position, intuitive adjustment features, additional storage space and enhanced entertainment system. The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental is a completely new aircraft that builds upon the positive features of the Boeing 747 series, Lufthansa’s long-haul workhorse for more than 40 years. The aircraft’s wings have significantly improved aerodynamics and newly developed wingtips. The aircraft also provides tangible improvements in terms of eco-efficiency. The GEnx-2B engines consume less fuel and achieve a 15 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions per passenger. In addition, noise emissions have been reduced by 30 per cent. A further two Boeing 747-8
Intercontinental aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2012. Amongst the destinations that Lufthansa will serve with the new aircraft is Bangalore, which will thus become the second 747-8 destination in India after Delhi. Lufthansa has ordered a total of 20 Boeing 747-8s.

Oslo’dan sonra Norveç’in ikinci büyük şehri.

sıkça duyuran Apex Tour- Cruise Holidays’in Ocean Majesty adlı gemisi ile Adriyatik turunu öğrenince, kuzey denizlerinin soğunu üzerimizden atıp, içimizi ısıtalım istedik.

Arıcı Side, Olimpos, Myra, Termessos, Telmessos, Sagalossos, Perge, Seleukiea, Selge, Letoon, Tlos, Patara Meclis Binası ve Xanthos Antik Kent’in, ziyaret eden turist bakımından ikinci Efes olduğunu belirtti.
