Istanbul to Bid for 2020 Olympic Games
Ataturk Olympic Stadium Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Istanbul's bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. "We are here today to declare to the world our candidacy for the 2020 Olympic Games, which we consider extremely important for our country and people," Mr. Erdogan said at the press conference on August 13. “Our candidature to host the Olympics stemmed from our realization in the great importance of sports value and olympic spirit, which we believe play an active role in maintaining peace everywhere in the world,” he said. Istanbul is the world's only city on two continents that has been a crossroads of trade, culture, learning and art for over 3,000 years as well as the capital of three of the greatest empires the world has known. It is no accident that Istanbul was the city the Eastern Roman emperors, the Byzantine dynasty and the Ottoman sultans chose to call home. Istanbul offers a unique combination of accessibility, variety and natural beauty. And to that natural beauty, those empires added their own artistic and architectural masterpieces, making Istanbul one of the world's great cultural treasure houses. “Symbol of Olympics; peace and well-being flame has been kept burning at our lands and especially in Istanbul for many centuries and enlightened the history. Therefore we say that Turkey is a country of Olympics and Olympic flame will look good at our country” added Mr. Erdogan. Erdogan announced that Istanbul will host World Wrestling Championship next month. He also informed that Istanbul, which hosts World Tennis Championships three years in a row, will host World Indoor Athletics Championships, FINA Short Course Swimming World Championships, World Golf Championships in 2012. 2013 Mediterranean Games, and 2014 FIBA World Basketball Championship for Women will also held in Turkey, announced Mr. Erdogan. Istanbul will be competing against Rome, Madrid, Tokyo and maybe Doha for the 2020 Olympic Games. Turkey in 2002 completed the construction of Istanbul Ataturk Olympics Stadium with a capacity of some 75.000 people. The stadium is in compliance with international standards of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and football and athletics federations, it said on its website. The International Olympic Committee has begun the selection process for the host city. Bids are due by September 1, 2011. The host city will be elected in Buenos Aires on September 7, 2013 at the 125th IOC Session.

Transportation to Turkey’s Black Sea Region to Get Easier A ground-breaking ceremony was held in northern Ordu province to give start to the construction of Ordu-Giresun (OR-GI) Airport, Turkey’s first airport to be built on the sea. Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony in Ordu’s Gulyali town, Turkish Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin said Turkey’s Black Sea provinces of Ordu and Giresun had been waiting for this historic day for years. Sahin noted that OR-GI Airport would turn the region into an important center for sports, tourism and arts. Turkish Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim, on his part, said that people of the region had been waiting for an airport since 1970, however, none of the governments had managed to initiate such project until Justice & Development
(AK) Party’s ruling. “Now, this legend is coming true. Today, we are at the ground-breaking ceremony and I hope the project will be completed in a short time,” Yildirim said. The groundbreaking ceremony for OR-GI Airport was held in northern Gulyali town, located 19 km to central Ordu and 25 km to Giresun. With terminals to be constructed on a 16,000 square-meter field, OR-GI Airport is expected to have
the capacity to host 2 million passengers annually. Nearly 500 people will work in the construction phase of the airport per year, while 300 personnel will be employed once it starts operating. n

Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Ertugrul Gunay, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Kadir Topbaş, Governor of Istanbul Hüseyin Avni Mutlu, and Adalar (Islands) District Mayor Mustafa Farsakoglu took one-day tour to Yassiada and Sivriada together with the press. Yassıada and Sivriada are ones of the Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara. The islands are officially a neighbourhood in the Adalar district of Istanbul, Turkey. Mr. Gunay said that Yassiada would become a museum island. “We will build a museum of democracy here. However, it will not just be a museum, but a place for cultural activities as well. We expect it will also have accommodation facilities, a showroom and auditoriums,” said Gunay. Mr.Gunay and the accompanying delegation visited sports hall which was turned into a court hall after May 27 (1960) military coup. Mr.Gunay said representatives of an elected political ruling, including the president and the prime minister, were here in the court hall after May 27 military coup. “All the representatives of the Democracy Party government were kept under arrest in this island after May 27 military coup and were judged in an extraordinary court there. The most merciless judges convened and hearings which ashamed legal and democracy history were made,” he said. This hall will be converted back into a courtroom where we will try to show the lawlessness and present the court rulings of the time. The cells where Menderes, Celal Bayar and other statesmen stayed in will be included in the museum and their belongings will be on show. The 1960 military coup toppled the Democrat Party (DP) government led by Prime Minister Adnan Menderes. On May 27, 1960, the military overthrew the democratically elected Menderes government and the military junta took control of the administration alleging that the state’s secular character was at risk. According to officers who staged the coup, it was aimed at putting an end to activities against secularism in the country. However, it is widely believed the coup was carried out to restore the administration to its original state, where power was shared only among the elite of the country.

By Maija & Omer Kocaman Mr.Buharalı, as you have been arranging big festivals in Turkey, could you tell us about the structure and present situation of festivals in Turkey? The very first thing you have to think after you have desided to arrange a festival, is the future, the continuity of the festival. When planning a festival, it is more important to think how to
make the festival to survive from year to year and keep it active, than the decision to make a festival itself. To be able to do this, festivals should be organised by a team of professionals. Of course there are also festivals organised by volunteers but also they must have a professional as a head of their team to show the right way to proceed. We know that there are many local and international

festivals like this in our country. With this kind of professional guidance, there is the chance to be successfull. Festivals which are promoting local products and local art festivals should be kept separate. As a matter of fact, festivals which are promoting local products actually are more promoting days, local happenings. Unfortunally we are using this foreign origin word festival for all this kind of happenings. Already using this word festival brings publicity, not how and in which way the festival is arranged. It should be decided whether you will arrange a
happening or a festival. Of course it is not possible to go through all this name by name but after all, festivals with high quality program and artists, are the real festivals and they are leaving a long lasting footprint to the area and to the whole country.
You have to improve and enlarge the festival you are arranging and to be able to do this you have to keep a certain standart and quality. To promote something with the quality of the product, it meens marketing. This should be done both domestic and internationally. Sometimes it is more We know, that as a result of your work, easy to make things from abroad to be festivals in Aspendos, Mersin and Side accepted. Why? If we look at festivals are members of important international which I have been arranging, the organizations. This means classical music, jazz, authentic music, bale and modern dance. The impact of international performers sometimes gives more than expected and when the locals also are aware of this, they give their support with full heart. This is why you have to think and address to three different groups; locals, domestic and international. This makes promoting the festival easier but at the same it puts you under a pressure; to keep the same quality level also next year. membership Union of Festivals, During the years I was organizing 5. arranged in the area, culture tourism also has to take this in to consideration and has to act accordingly. What is the importance of festivals in promoting the area and tourism? In your opinion, what is the mission of festivals in this aspect? This question brings up again the importance of culture tourism. Nomally we understand tourism as sun, sand and sea. For us it means also the opportunity to visit our families and spending some time in holiday resorts. Anatolia is the homeland of many civilisations and there are many remains of ancient times all over the country. I wonder, how many of us have visited ancient sites near our homes. Or
Focus on Cover Story how many of us has taken our own children to see these places. We can not improve tourism in our country if we are not aware of our history. Cultural tourism as one of the most important branch of tourism, comes alive in festivals and in beeing aware of our historical heritage. And if these festivals are arranged in historical places, these two things are achieved at the same time. Of course, each country has the heritage they are presenting with pride. What we have, is something other countries are looking at with jealousy. To avoid this feeling of jealousy is achieved by involving also foreigners in different activities. This is how each person taking part in organization is working also as a good will ambassador to promote our coountry.
Mr.BuharalĹ, what are difficoulties we are facing when arranging festivals? First of all of course the budget. If you have found the neccessary money, does it mean that all the problems have been solved? Of course money isn’t everything. When you start to arrange a festival with an average budget, the most important question rising up is, what will you do if there is not

enough people coming to the festival? This brings with a danger when you are planning the program; you have to take in concideration the expectations of the audiences but at the same time you are not allowed to make the program too simple. Of course this kind of program is not done in a couple of days. The planning of next years program begins immediately after finishing the festival this year. The staff in office an other posts during the festival has to give their assistance from the beginning to the very end. Invitations to the artists and groups from abroad has to be sent very much in advance or it may happen so, that they can not come the year you have planned but the next year. When you are arranging festivals in different towns and cities, it also means that you have to spend a lot of time separate from your own family.
know the festival. How much do we know about Cannes? But we do know the film festivals. There are many more examples like this. The continuity, it is the most important thing. What is the situation in Turkey if we think the professionalism and public organisations taking part in arranging festivals?
I can say, that we are quite succesfull in this way. There are many similar kind of festivals in our country and there is a healthy competition between them. Maybe, this same kind of competiton we can not see in any other field in Turkey. We follow each other very closely. We suport each other. Each festival organization is sending an invitation to the others. When we are arranging festivals, which are aimed to touch people’s aesthetical feelings, this gives us also a very heavy responsibility. In your opinion, what should be When arranging a cultural happening done to make the festival an yearly we also at the same time try to be a occasion? good example to our collegues. When The most important thing is to arrange we talk about institutionalization, it has to be supported not only in official the festival every year. The support affairs but also in communication and of local authorities is very important. Sometimes it happens, that the festival respect. To make a succesful festival, it does not only mean a good program itself becomes more known than the but also that you makes the audiences place where it is arranged. In previous years, of course, we were coping the festivals abroad. Isn’t it so, that there is not a person, who will not be affected by other people and the things that they have done. When the artists are comparing festivals in Turkey and abroad, the comments about our festivals and about the professional way they are arranged , is worth of mentioning and also arousing a little jelously in others. Of course a country with a 400 years past in arranging festivals, is ahead of us in many ways. But festivals arranged in Turkey are among the ones, which are followed regularly all over the world. I can say with pride and big happines, that we are good! Can you tell us, what is in your opinion the effect of festivals for tourism and in promoting our country abroad? People go to very well known festivals like in Salzburg, Verona, St. Petersburg, Munich, Mallorca, Baden Baden especially because of the program of the festival. On the other hand, many places know also how to attract people by their food and specialities. az aylarında insanların tatil için seçenekleri çoktur.

Sevimli personeli her sorunuza sabırla yanıt vermeye her daim hazır.

Kerem Köfteoğlu, COTRI’nin raporuna göre, Çinli turistlerin, Çin Hükümeti’nin (Approved Destination Status) Resmi Turizm Destinasyonu anlaşması yaptığı ülke sayısını 140’a yükselttiğini, Çin’in geçen yıl yurt dışına gönderdiği 57. 4 milyon turistle, Asya pazarında yurt dışına turist yollayan ülkeler arasında birinci olduğunu ifade etti. Köfteoğlu, COTRI’nin raporunun, yurt dışına giden Çinli turistlerin yaptığı harcamaların da ilk kez Çin’i ziyaret eden yabancıların harcamalarını aştığına dikkat çektiğine değinerek, 2011-2015 yılları arasında yurt dışına çıkan Çinli turist sayısının yılda ortalama yüzde 9’luk artış kaydetmesinin öngörüldüğüne işaret etti. Köfteoğlu, COTRI raporunda, uzmanları, Çin hükümetinin yurt dışı çıkışlardaki bürokratik engelleri daha da azaltmasıyla yurt dışında tatil yapan Çinli turist sayısının 100 milyonlarla ifade edileceğini
vurguladı. Köfteoğlu, şunları kaydetti: “Öte yandan, Çin’in gelişen yurt dışı pazarının Türkiye ‘ye yansımasının da son derece olumlu olacağı tahmin ediliyor. Bu konuda Doç. Dr. Serdar Ongan başkanlığında İstanbul Üniversitesi Bilimsel Araştırma Projeleri Birimi’nin hazırladığı ‘Gelişen Çin Turizm Pazarı ve Türkiye ‘ adlı kitapta geniş bilgilere yer veriliyor. Söz konusu kitapta, Çin’in değişik bölgelerinde 6 bin 625 kişiyle yapılan bir anketin sonuçlarına yer veriliyor. “ Köfteoğlu, ankete katılan ve Türkiye ‘yi ziyaret eden Çinliler’in yüzde 88’i tanıdıklarına Türkiye ‘yi gitmeyi tavsiye ettiklerine işaret ederek, ankete katılanların, “Türkiye denince ilk aklınıza gelen nedir” sorusuna verdikleri yanıtların sırasıyla, “İstanbul”, “döner kebap”, “Türk hamamı”, “Mavi Tur” ve “futbol” olduğunu söyledi. n
