EMITT – Istanbul , 30 January-2 February 2014

The 18th edition of EMITT will be held in Istanbul on 30 January-2 February 2014. With more than 4,500 exhibitors from over 70 countries, this exhibition will cover 65,000 square metres in 11 halls at Istanbul’s TUYAP Buyukcekmece Exhibition Centre. Exhibitors will include travel agencies, tourism boards, tourism foundations, hotels, cruise liners and those specialising in business & incentive, health and eco-tourism and more. The 2013 exhibition hosted 131,020 visitors and this forthcoming event is expected to be just as popular. Commenting on Turkey as a continually growing tourism destination, Ali Selcuk Can, director of the Turkish Culture and Tourism Office in London, states “Ranking as the 6th in the world with respect to the number of international tourist arrivals and rising all the time, Turkey is the perfect location to host such an

exhibition focusing exclusively on travel and tourism. The country boasts almost 3,000 hotels and a 1-million-bed capacity as well as over 6,500 travel agencies and 15 charter airlines.” Likewise Turkey itself has a healthy outgoing travel market with 12 million people having the same income level as the average European, 3.4 million of whom earn over £26,300 or more. Of those travelling most prefer cultural and shopping tours, spending an average of £600 a week, more than the average for European travellers. There are 3.5 million small and medium enterprise businesses active in the production and service markets in Turkey and whose management travel on business a minimum of four times a year. The 18th EMITT is organised by the EKIN–TYD partnership and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, TOBB, 6 chambers and 36 regional associations and foundations.

The 1st Project of the YAP Istanbul Modern The first temporary installation of the YAP Istanbul Modern: Young Architects Program is now open to visitors in the museum’s courtyard. YAP Istanbul Modern is carried out by Istanbul Modern in collaboration with The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and MoMA PS1 and co-sponsored by Garanti Bank, Polimeks, and VitrA. Designed and constructed by SO? Architecture and Ideas, “Sky Spotting Stop” welcomes visitors of all ages free of charge in Istanbul Modern’s courtyard between 25 June and 20 October 2013. Starting in July, this area is also used as a venue for events programmed by Istanbul Modern especially for younger audiences. Furthermore, Istanbul Modern has conceived an international show in its pop-up exhibition area on the 15-year history of the YAP: Young Architects Program and the designs of the 20 finalists invited to the program in 2013 by MoMA PS1, CONSTRUCTO, MAXXI, and Istanbul Modern. Curated by Çelenk Bafra and Pelin Derviş, the exhibition features videos, photographs, and models of the projects as well as a ‘making-of’ video of “Sky Spotting Stop”. The aim of the YAP: Young Architects Program is to encourage

architects to address environmental issues such as sustainability, re-use, and re-cycling, and to explore innovative design ideas providing elements of shade, water, and seating that increase the possibilities of use of open-air spaces. Providing a popular urban venue for the summer, these designs are expected to host diverse events and create intimate social spaces for city-dwellers-all through solutions that are architecturally and financially feasible. “Sky Spotting Stop” Designed by SO? Architecture and Ideas (Sevince Bayrak and Oral Göktaş), YAP Istanbul Modern’s first project “Sky Spotting Stop” takes its name from the title of a poem by Turgut Uyar (“Göğe Bakma Durağı”, Dünyanın En Güzel Arabistanı). “Sky Spotting Stop” shades the courtyard of Istanbul Modern while floating gently on the hidden waters of the Bosphorus, projecting its host space upon the city. Thanks to the structural characteristics of the courtyard and the warehouse in which the museum is located, the motion of the waves is transferred to the movement of the architectural elements. The courtyard, situated right by the shore but disconnected from it by a customs zone, is defined anew by the shading elements supported by buoys floating in the water right beneath the courtyard. The courtyard becomes part of the skyline through this ephemeral, though lively, addition, which is visible both from the Bosphorus and the highest points of the city. Visitors in the courtyard can spend time under the undulating shade during the day and among the varying reflections after nightfall. The various uses of the courtyard are shaped by elements made from re-used materials; re-used vehicle tires covered with fishnets become lightweight, sturdy, portable units. The altering landscape that emerges and the constantly moving canopies transform the courtyard into a new stop in the city for resting, gathering, playing, or “sky spotting.”

Turkey has won the U-18 European Basketball Championships Turkey has won the U-18 European Championships in Latvia, building on the country’s national sporting momentum ahead of the IOC’s final decision on the hosts of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games on 7 September. Turkey beat Croatia 81-74 in a scintillating final to claim their first ever European title. Turkey’s senior men’s basketball team will hope to replicate the same success when they compete in EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia in September. Istanbul 2020 Bid Chairman, Hasan Arat, said, “There is so much sporting talent amongst Turkey’s 31 million young people and it is excellent to see this potential is beginning to be fulfilled. But, there is still so much more to come from our young athletes. Istanbul 2020 will realise this untapped potential by stimulating and supporting a dramatic rise in mass sports participation throughout Turkey and the surrounding region.”

Turkey Named World’s 4th Largest Donor Turkey named the world’s fourth largest government donor of humanitarian assistance according to the 2013 Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA) report. GHA’s 2013 report revealed that Turkey donated over $1 billion in international assistance in 2012, almost quadrupling its contribution from the previous year despite a global trend that saw assistance drop overall – the world’s total international humanitarian response fell by 8% last year. The US remained the largest donor of humanitarian assistance, followed by the EU institutions and the UK. The 2013 GHA report demonstrates Turkey’s commitment to supporting people in need beyond its borders. The $1 billion in donations represents 0.13% of the country’s Gross National Income, making it the ‘most generous’ member of the G20 according to the report. Istanbul 2020 Bid Chairman, Hasan Arat, said, “Turkey’s capacity to donate such significant humanitarian funding shows the robust health of our economy – especially as this report comes just a few weeks after Turkey became a net creditor to the IMF. But more importantly, it shows Turkey’s values. We are ready and able to share our good fortune with those around the world who need it most, and we have great experience in translating funding into life-changing results. “This GHA report gives us great confidence that Istanbul 2020 can achieve our legacy goals. Sport will be our vehicle

for spreading the Olympic Values throughout the region and connecting this huge, youthful population with the full power of the Olympic Movement for the first time. Istanbul 2020 will be a bridge to an historic impact for the region and the entire Olympic Movement.” An Istanbul 2020 delegation is currently in Barcelona at the 2013 FINA World Championships. The Istanbul 2020 presentation booth gives visitors a chance to explore how its Games plan is woven into the fabric of the iconic city using innovative Mixed Reality Interface tables.

Turkey’s Mediterranean Games is Best-Practice Model The Director-General of the Mediterranean Games 2017, Ramon Cuadrat, has backed the ticketing strategy at Mersin 2013 and is hopeful that equally well-attended events will be seen when Tarragona hosts the Games. At the Opening Ceremony of the 17th edition of the Games, IOC President Jacques Rogge said the outcome of Mersin 2013 could affect Turkey’s bid to hold the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Istanbul in 2020. Mersin’s delivery of the Games so far has been praised by the media and athletes for the high-quality infrastructure – built in just 18 months rather than the usual

six years. Tarragona 2017’s observer delegation has now added its support to the work of the organising committee. The speed of Turkey’s construction and preparation of Mersin’s venues was praised by Ramon Cuadrat: “It’s early right now and Tarragona 2017 has a little advantage. Mersin started only two years before!” Cuadrat commented on the public’s enthusiasm for the Mersin Games, as well as praising the young and enthusiastic Turkish volunteers: “We hope that the venues get really crowded in Tarragona – like here. We think it is a very good idea to have very low [ticket] prices. The athletes are really happy to play here; It’s really full of colour and people. “The main part that we have learnt is the big involvement of the people of Mersin and other cities and we really think that is the best way to start our project. We have learnt here that volunteering is imperative and we need to work really hard to [make this] a very important structure of our project.” Cuadrat added that his team’s observer role in Mersin has been a good experience: “For us, here in Turkey, the Mediterranean Games are the second most important Games after the Olympic Games; of course it’s very important to concentrate all the sports and the cultures in just one event. Here in Turkey we are really pleased because we have seen this. It’s really nice going through the village and through the city and mixing with other people”.

Bodrum

odrum is a paradise for its climate, sea, natural beauty, magnificent coves and history, as well as for its modern nightlife where it’s continued on until sunrise. From the past up until today, Bodrum always had a specific type of tourism. With its white houses, its narrow streets down to the sea, and its pits, the reputation of Bodrum has spread all over the world. During winters and springs, November through April, the weather in Bodrum is generally very good with a few heavy shower periods, usually taking place in November, and then some time after new year and the last one in March/April. February is especially pleasant with not too cold nights and the almond blossoming and the abundance of wild ruccola all over the place. Summers, arriving after April, are as hot as it can get (expect temperatures higher than 40 C) and sunny with no rain. NewFocus

They will join the already confirmed Chiva Som, Italy’s Vendura Golf and Spa Resort and Switzerland’s The Alpina Gstaad, among other leading brands from across the world. Wellness travel is one of the fastest growing areas of international and domestic tourism and

the increased demand has encouraged this diverse range of international exhibitors to join ILTM Spa – an event which will provide spa specialists and suppliers with the opportunity to build global business in a series of scheduled, one-to-one business appointments pre-selected by both parties. Alison Gilmore, ILTM Exhibition Director commented, “The spa experience is becoming a necessity for both male and female luxury travellers. Spas are increasingly driving factors in a destination choice and there are many opportunities for the luxury hotel industry and the spa and wellness sectors to work together to maximise inbound luxury tourism opportunities.” To highlight the breadth and potential of this fast developing global market, the ILTM Spa Opening Forum will address Eastern medicine, Western psychology, destination spas and commercial spa excellence, as well as global trends affecting the world of luxury and the many new opportunities opening up worldwide.

Following the inaugural ILTM Africa held in Cape Town earlier this year, organisers Reed Travel Exhibitions has announced that the 2014 event will take place in the East Ballroom of the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC) from 28th – 30th April. With the first ILTM Africa in 2013 a sell out event, next year’s event will give more creative space for the table top presentation format, dedicated feature areas and a variety of options for networking opportunities. ILTM Africa will be one of three co-located travel industry events at the CTICC that form ‘Africa Travel Week’. The others will include IBTM Africa (Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings) 28th-30th April, and WTM Africa (World Travel Market), which will take place from 2nd – 3rd May. Located in the hub of the city’s northern foreshore, the ILTM Africa venue at the CTICC provides guests with views of Table Mountain, the Roggebaai Canal and the famous V&A Waterfront area. “This is an unmatched waterfront location with all the facilities we need to build on the success of ILTM Africa 2013. With so many new suppliers already wanting to join those who celebrated the success of our first event, we now move to a location and environment that is conducive to doing business whilst enjoying the variety of all the facilities on the Waterfront,” says Alison Gilmore, Exhibition Director, ILTM Portfolio. ILTM Africa 2014 is expected to host up to 150 suppliers of luxury travel experiences from across the African continent to meet international accredited buyers through a mutual matching, pre-scheduled one-to-one business

appointments system. Simon Mandy, Marketing & Operations Manager for The Royal Portfolio was delighted with the quality of the buyers he met at ILTM Africa 2013 and also found many he had never met before. “We are so appreciative of what ILTM is doing. We have traditionally travelled to all corners of the world to find these buyers, but to have them here is remarkable. It’s a great opportunity to sell to those we haven’t met before and has given us a great platform.“ Mr. Simone Scarapicchia, Partner and Sales & Marketing Director of Hideaway of Nungwi Resort & Spa Zanzibar concluded, “ILTM Africa 2013 was very interesting and the buyers are really good quality.

Tasarımcısı Walter J. McInnis olan 15 metre boyundaki tekne Amerikan demiryolu vagonlarının üreticisi American Car and Foundry (A.C.F) firması tarafından imal edilmiştir.

ABD’nin 32nci Başkanı Franklin Roosevelt’in eşi First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt de tekneyle Boğaz turuna çıkan üst düzey ABD’liler arasında yer alıyor. Rahmi M. Koç Müzesi’nde yerini alan Hiawatha teknesi, eskisi gibi boğazda seyir yapacak ve zaman zaman müze misafirleri ile ABD Konsolosluğu misafirlerini gezdirecek.
