ANDICOOTZ, also known as Jordan Davies by his friends and family, is a South London based Grime artist. Recently being titled ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2017 MOBO AWARDS, JD is quickly becoming a leader of the UK’s music scene. LDN SOUND has brought him here today for a chat about his rise in the industry, his debut album ‘More Blessings,’ and what it’s like to produce a chart topping single from scratch with a budget of £13
£12.79 actually. It was mental, like, we literally filmed the music video with my IPhone and edited it on IMovie on the same day. We already had the music equipment to create the track so that didn’t count for the budget but, for a song that broke through the charts so quickly, it’s mad. I remember being in the studio with Dizzee when recording and producing that track, we didn’t even think it would do as well as it did.
So, in your recent track ‘Round Here’ featuring Giggs, you talk about growing up in Brixton and how the underground scene has Trust me, my social media just exploded. I had changed in the past years. Would you say GRM Daily and Link Up TV sending me e-mails this has had an impact on the sound you’re asking me to feature on all these different tracks, creating? Definitely. Growing up in south London really molded me into the MC I’ve become like, you listen to any of my freestyles and you can’t miss the references made to Dizzee or Skepta’s albums. It just comes innit. Plus living on the streets of London really opens your eyes at a young age. You see things that a kid your age probably shouldn’t be exposed to but you know, it’s just life. There’s positives though, you become much more open minded as you meet all these people from different cultures and that. I think that comes through pretty strong in my music aswell.
Nothing really. Just misunderstandings and that. Social media just blew that situation out of proportion. It’s all good though, I was in the studio with him last week actually. We’ve got a few bangers which we’ll hopefully release around the summer. But yeah, me and Dizzee are on good terms, that’s my brother.
Yeah, swear when me and Dizzee were in the studio producing ‘Bad Boyz’ it was just meant to be. We just naturally came together and made that tune, it never felt forced or like, lead more by one than the other. In terms of my new EP, I can’t really reveal too much but yeah, the track list is looking strong. Quite a few interesting, slightly more experimental features. In the meanwhile though, I’ve released a few singles which make hint you guys to where the EP will be heading in terms of sound.
requests to get an EP done etc. It was weird because no one around me ever thought much of what I was doing, they just didn’t pay much attention. Literally the night before the release I was chatting to my brother about having doubts in the music industry. If that song didn’t go off, I’d genuinely contemplate leaving music behind as a career because it simply wasn’t giving me a sustainable income. I was sleeping on my friends sofa for months for a while, it wasn’t easy.
Well, at first it was a shock. I used to walk down this street that I’ve lived on since I was born, and suddenly now I get stopped for pictures and that. I never saw myself as ‘big,’ so it was definitely strange at first. Nevertheless, I love my fans. They keep me going. For example, I recently played a sold-out show at KOKO in Camden, and seeing all those people chanting my lyrics, really proved to me that music is my future. I live to share my message sonically, and I hope people will travel this journey with me
Yeah, we had just recently been in the studio together and on the night of the show I thought, why not, why don’t we show the fans some new material, so I hit them up and they came on stage with me. The chemistry and energy between us was amazing, we’d never performed together and this was the first time, yet it was probably one my proudest moments in my career. I really look up to Stormzy and Kano, they’re who I grew up listening to and honestly think I wouldn’t be where I am now without them. They’re so inspirational for me. Big up Stormzy on his new album GSAP as well, make sure you guys listen to that.
I’m so excited to see my brother Skepta headlining at Wireless. Just know I’ll be at the front banging out every lyric that blares from those speakers. There’s a few other as well though like, I definitely want to see Mostack. I grew up with that guy, there’s no way I can’t be at his own show. I remember spending afternoons freestyling back to back outside the local youth club with him, and now we’re both on one of England’s most popular summer festival’s lineup. Those are two acts I really don’t want to miss, but it’ll be difficult because they’re so strict on timings with official events like this. It makes me miss the underground events me and my boys used to set up back in the day, where you’d just pick up the mic and show what you had. Still, I’m so grateful that Wireless included me in this and I hope to see LDN SOUND there in the crowd.
Just a lot more material. Albums. Singles. Everything. I’m announcing my 2017 tour dates soon, so stay tuned for that. Thanks for having me here today, it was such a pleasure speaking to you guys and I hope to be back on LDN SOUND soon.
