retail design institute student competition spring 2013

the challenge: to design, name, and brand an American fare restaurant within an existing building footprint to begin in Ohio but branch out into other states. the solution: a fun, inviting restaurant that serves all food and drink inside of America’s
favorite cup: a mug. With a neutral restaurant environment with minimal pops of color, the bright mugs stand out across the restaurant.
7
To brand the restaurant, the “u” shaped mug is used in various ways, from the entrance (1) to the business and gift cards (right). Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own mugs to swap with those seen on the wall in the entry (1). This keeps customers coming back and ensures they have a different experience each time. The dining room (2) is a neutral environment with a pop of color. The space plan separates different areas to create “rooms” that feel more intimate.

flat pack design + build fall 2013
11
the challenge: to build a flat-pack piece of furniture to fit in a standard size ups box. Design three pieces that belong to the same collection and choose one to build.
the solution: an end table with a twist on a Jacob’s latter type hinge. Leather straps are
attached using snaps which allow the boards to move about each other 360 degrees. To create a flush surface, the CNC is used to create a notch where the leather will lie when snapped to the board. For stability, the acrylic punctures the middle board and rests into notches on the top and bottom. These materials together create a simple juxtaposition.

chicken coop fall 2011
17
the challenge: to design a chicken coop for a resident of Manhattan, KS. The entire project is to be
drawn by hand.
the solution: triangular-shaped movable pods that cohesively form a single unit in which the chickens are free to roam. Water and food storage is incorporated in the pods. If more chickens are added to the family, extra triangles can be purchased and added to the form to create more space.

NEXT
steelcase competition fall 2013
21
the challenge: to design an office for a think tank company “NEXT” with 70% steelcase products. The company is moving from a warehouse space to a high rise, therefore real estate optimization is essential. the solution: a brand and culture that represents the work that visitors to the think tank expect.
Classrooms, display space, and “ideation zone” (housing past and present project examples) are near the entry for visitors to quickly understand what NEXT stands for and produces. The open office is against the glazing for light penetration throughout the space while more private areas are on the outside of the plan but utilize V.I.A. walls with glazing. Moments of casual collision are encouraged by dispersing the enclaves all around perimeter of the open office. Exposed ceilings and neutral floor materials allow for small pops of magenta and yellow throughout the office.

An important aspect of the design of NEXT is providing opportunities for display of current and past projects. Behind the reception desk (3) is the “Think Tank,” the area for designers and clients to meet together to discuss and brainstorm how their ideas can be accomplished. One of the other display areas is outside of the Think Tank (1) where suspended acrylic panels hold posters or sketches of NEXT’s greatest designs. Swings made from the Steelcase CH07 Shell Chair (2) hang outside of the classrooms near the entrance for a fun, interactive view of downtown Austin.

the challenge: large group project to design an adaptable workstation for a distant learner. Morgan Stafford, Anthony Dorrel, Xavier Gavin, and I comprised the seating group that was challenged to design a chair to cohesively fit into the workstation. the concept: the city and its rectilinear grid, taking its connectivity and infrastructure into consideration. the solution: a functioning workstation for the distant learner for every task needed throughout the
work day - tackable surface “bands,” a drop zone upon entry for storage, a display area inside and outside of the workstation to promote one’s work, a movable display node used as a backdrop for skype interviews/meetings, a chair that provides both tasking and lounging orientations based on its ability to rotate upon its base, and a “boardmobile” that moves around the workstation for ultimate user control.

law firm design fall 2013
33
the challenge: to design a law firm with a studio partner (Aaron Bisch) and create a book to include design intent, process, typicals, and specifications.
the solution: Shiflet + Wetter, an entertainment law firm in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The designers have revitalized an existing historic building, highlighting its classical architecture while bringing in modern materials and furnishings. The space plan will also reflect this modernity by creating more open work spaces and creating less of a hierarchy between employees. The designers have respected the high priority of security and have celebrated public spaces such as the lobby, conference rooms, and break out areas.
35
The designers found an existing building for lease in downtown Nashville to dictate what architecture should be used in the design (1). Then, case studies were taken from classical buildings in the city: The Cathedral of the Incarnation (2), the Tennessee State Capital, and the Nashville Union Station. The space plan was then designed with a center, public core. Private offices and conference rooms are on either side.
37
The break room (2) became more than a space for employees to eat: it is now a large, open environment for meeting, parties, or just casual collision. The “wave (1) is a designed sculpture/furniture piece that makes a statement upon entry to the office while being a functional table, chair, or serving surface.
39
The public spaces of the office house many conference rooms (3). These open out to break-out spaces, which can serve a variety of purposes (1). Pivoting glass walls can be utilized to take advantage of more space for meetings or lunches. To allow privacy when needed in the conference rooms, filzfelt panels (2) are provided which add to the acoustical properties in the room.
