UK CAR PRODUCTION PLUMMETS IN JULY Uk Car Manufacturing (data for July) y British car manufacturing output declines -37.6% in July with 53,438 units made. y Production volumes damaged by global chip shortages, ‘pingdemic’ and summer shutdown timings. y 26.0% of all cars made in July were alternatively fuelled, their highest share on record. Thursday 26 August, 2021 UK car manufacturing output fell -37.6% in July, the first fall since February, with just 53,438 units made, according to the latest figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It represented the worst July performance since 1956 as manufacturers grappled with the global shortage of semiconductors and staff absence resulting from the ‘pingdemic’, with some altering summer shutdown timings to help manage the situation.1 In July production for the UK market declined -38.7% to 8,233 while manufacturing for export also fell, down -37.4% with 45,205 cars shipped overseas. Exports accounted for more than

eight out of 10 (84.6%) vehicles built in the month as buyers around the world continued to be attracted to the wide range of highquality cars made in Britain, including the latest alternatively fuelled models. More than a quarter (26.0%) of all cars made in July were either battery electric (BEV), plug in hybrid (PHEV) or hybrid electric (HEV), their highest share on record, and meaning that UK car factories have turned out 126,757 of these important products since the start of the year. Production overall remains up 18.3% on Covid hit 2020 at 552,361 units, but this is down significantly (-28.7%) on 2019 pre-pandemic levels when 774,760 cars rolled off production lines.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “These figures lay bare the extremely tough conditions UK car manufacturers continue to face. While the impact of the ‘pingdemic’ will lessen as self-isolation rules change, the worldwide shortage of semiconductors shows little sign of abating. The UK automotive industry is doing what it can to keep production lines going, testament to the adaptability of its workforce and manufacturing processes, but Government can help by continuing the supportive Covid measures currently in place and boosting our competitiveness with a reduction in energy levies and business rates for a sector that is strategically important in delivering net zero."

INDUSTRY GROWTH SLOWS DESPITE AUTOMOTIVE INPUT AS MANUFACTURERS SUFFER RECORD STOCK SHORTAGES Output growth in the UK for the past three months eased back from recent highs as stock shortages hit record levels. The Confederation for British Industry (CBI) reported 22 per cent growth for the quarter to August, which was a slowdown from the 37 per cent increase for the three months to July.
saw output drop from a near-record pace to being flat for the period. However, manufacturers say they expect output growth to pick up again over the next three months.
Its latest monthly industrial trends survey showed that this was mainly driven by the automotive industry, which nevertheless
The CBI’s latest monthly industrial trends survey, which polled 262 major manufacturers, found that output rose in
13 out of 17 sectors, with growth particularly driven by the food, drink and tobacco divisions. ‘However, early signs from the data suggest that growth in activity may have peaked.’ The survey also revealed that stock levels fell to a new record low for the third consecutive month.

TOYOTA TO CUT VEHICLE PRODUCTION BY 40% IN SEPTEMBER Toyota has revealed that it plans to cut its global vehicle production by 40% because of the impact of COVID-triggered semiconductor shortages. Reuters reported (August 19) that next month’s cuts involved 15 factories and would result in a shortfall of 360,000 vehicles over its original plan. News of the measure comes after AM became aware of at least one car maker who had begun importing “incomplete” cars to the UK in
a bid to mitigate against new car supply shortages. Reuters report said that Toyota’s sales had fared better than some rivals so far, after the OEM built a larger stockpile of chips under a business continuity plan adopted after the 2011 earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster. However, a
resurgence in COVID-19 cases across Asia has compounded the semiconductor crisis hampering global automotive production.

A HUGE 'THANK YOU' FROM KNOCKHILL RACING CIRCUIT The whole team at Knockhill would like to send a huge thank you to everyone who made the 2021 BTCC race meeting so memorable. The pandemic has effected everyone around the world in so many different ways and
for us, the last two seasons have been so challenging, primarily not having fans at race meetings. But the weekend was so special, and emotional, not only for everyone involved but the feedback from the spectators too has shown us just how much they missed coming. Not only to see such quality racing but just to get back to some degree of normality and experience going to an event again.
For everyone involved, it was a giant feeling of relief mixed with excitement and it was just so great to see so many smiles on the fans faces and Saltire’s flying high again all around the venue.
