Motorists have been advised that Government’s target to deliver the widespread roll-out of driverless cars on UK roads from 2025 are “not going to happen”, despite new investment in the technology.

Quoted in AM’s sister title, Fleet News, Greg Ford, the general manager of Driver Risk Management, said: “While, in theory, driverless vehicles could be legal on the UK’s roads by 2025, the reality is this is not going to Jonathanhappen.”Hewett, chief executive of Thatcham Research, welcomed the “breadth of the Government’s ambition” in positioning the UK as a centre for self-driving innovation, along with the safety-first approach.

Government has unveiled plans for new legislation to roll out self-driving vehicles on UK roads by 2025 with £100 million committed to delivering its autonomous ambitions and a further £34m confirmed on Friday (August 19) for research to support safety developments and inform more detailed legislation. That could include researching the performance of self-driving cars in poor weather conditions and how they interact with pedestrians, other vehicles, and cyclists. But despite plans that will see some vehicles, including cars, coaches and lorries with selfdriving features operating on motorways in the next year, many expect the reality of mass adoption timescales to be far longer.

Unprecedented change

“All the ingredients are present for the UK to become a global leader in this space. However, it is paramount that we make sense of the data these vehicles will provide, to inform risk and ultimately pave the way for safe adoption.”

In June a survey of over 1,000 UK motorists by CarGurus found motorists were already sceptical about autonomous driving aids. Only 22% of those surveyed were excited about the prospect of a car that offers many of the systems already available in most new cars, including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. “It’s vital that we balance the risk with the opportunity, gathering intelligence on the different use cases for the technology and in turn understanding what it means for all road Heusers.”added:

But he added: “The cars we drive are changing at an unprecedented rate. But the automotive industry is still at the lower end of a steep learning curve.

Ministers claim that accelerating the adoption of driverless vehicle technology will enable the UK take full advantage of the emerging market of self-driving vehicles, which could create up to 38,000 jobs and could be worth an estimated £42 billion. Government’s announcement of extra funding to boost this ambition came as the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) published its Responsible Innovation in Self-Driving Vehicles report, which set out proposals for a trustworthy approach to the regulation and governance of self-driving Thevehicles.report warned that it might not be enough for self-driving cars to be safer than normal cars, suggesting that the public may have little tolerance for driverless car.

The site, which due to open in October, will include an ultra-modern showroom and top-of-the-range aftersales centre for services and repairs.

‘It is going to be predominantly aftersales which is services and repairs and offer a range of approved used cars from the facility.

‘We are in the midst of recruiting a number of positions but a few employees who live over here are keen to move across.

‘It is anticipated that it will open early quarter four so October is the sort of target date.’

‘From our point of view, that means they know us and know how we operate so it works for them and hopefully we can replicate the standards of customer care that we have in Edinburgh with the new location.

There was plenty for potential car buyers, too, as proven by one of the major new car retailers attending, which reported a sales lead every 52 seconds. Featuring everything from the latest high-tech electric cars to a glorious display of classics celebrating our unique motoring heritage, The British Motor Show developed its unique concept of being the most interactive car show in the world, with a 30% bigger site and more than twice as many exhibitors as the show enjoyed in Read2021.the full article

RECORD CROWDS ATTEND THE BRITISH MOTOR SHOW 2022

Eastern Western Motor Group has unveiled plans for a new Mercedes dealership to be built in Dunfermline.

‘We have a lot of customers from Dunfermline in particular who come across to Edinburgh or Perth or Grangemouth.

The premises will create several new jobs and become the first new official Mercedes retail site in the Fife region for 15 years, Dunfermline Press Grahamreports.Affleck, Eastern Western’s marketing area director, said: ‘It is the first time there has been an official Mercedes Benz representation in Fife for quite a number of ‘Theyears.last site was in Kirkcaldy about 15 years ago and it closed so we have been keen to find somewhere that we could open.

Bigger, better and busier than ever, The British Motor Show 2022 broke its own attendance record – along with some GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS – as nearly 60,000 visitors flocked to Farnborough for the most exciting car show in the calendar.

The work will enable the connection of a planned 48 new high-power charge-points (24 westbound and 24 eastbound) to support the growth in EVs, reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

The ‘green recovery’ investment is delivering low carbon energy projects that will help achieve the Government’s 10 Point Plan towards Net Zero by 2050.

However, just 16% said they had considered the automotive sector as an option. Over and above common misconceptions about the industry, a lack of understanding about the range of roles, qualifications needed and salary expectations was a key factor.

UK MOTOR INDUSTRY HEADING FOR 160,000 WORKER SHORTFALL, SAYS IMI POWER UPGRADES TO BOOST UK CHARGING’S INFRASTRUCTURE Read the full article at AM Online Courtesy Smart Transport

Steve Nash, IMI chief executive, said, “The industry faces its biggest skills challenge of the last two decades. We have been lobbying government, the automotive industry and the education sector for a long time to invest in addressing the shortage in qualified EV technicians, and the majority have stepped up to the challenge. But our latest report worryingly reveals that the UK’s lack of EV skills are just the tip of the iceberg.

“An aging population is a significant contributor to the dilemma. Many of our older workers are set to retire over the coming years and fewer younger workers are joining the labour force. Without doubt, more needs to be done to attract young blood into the UK’s automotive sector.”

Decreased immigration, an ageing population and policies driving us to zero emissions vehicles are creating a major skills challenge for the automotive labour market, according to a new report from the Institute of the Motor Industry.

The company is halfway through a project to install 4km of new electrical cabling from a nearby substation to EV charging points located in the car parks of the Moto Medway east and westbound motorway services.

Its latest Automotive Sector Employment report warns of an escalating skills crisis and predicts 160,000 vacancies in the sector will need filling by 2031.

Whilst over half of 16-18 year old survey respondents said they had a clear career plan, those in Key Stage 3 and 4 said they are particularly concerned about making the world a better place with comments made about improving the environment, better safety in the automotive sector and on vehicles, and a desire to help people.

Adam Lakey, leading the projects for UK Power Networks, said: “These projects are about providing the infrastructure that gives businesses and the public the confidence to decarbonise their activities and we hope it will encourage more to make the switch to EVs.

Theinfrastructure.upgrading is taking place across a range of sites including EV charging hubs at motorway service stations, fleets of electric buses, community energy schemes and heat Investmentpumps. is underway on new grid connections to switch on Gridserve’s new EV charging stations at Moto Medway in Gillingham, as part of its £66 million Green Recovery Fund.

Despite forecasting a 2% decrease in the number of jobs available in the automotive industry by 2031, the report highlights that rising employment replacement demand - due to retirement, migration and occupational mobility – will significantly contribute to the expected and unprecedented number of available vacancies. The role most in demand will be the vehicle technician, which will account for 16% of vacancies.

Influencer respondents reported that a lack of local placements meant they were unable to satisfy young people open to pursuing a career in the automotive sector.

The IMI’s Diversity Task Force conducted a ‘Perception of the Automotive Sector’ survey to understand career misgivings and motivators about the industry. The survey was completed by over 1,600 school-aged children and young people from schools and colleges across the UK and 448 youth influencers, including career professionals.

The IMI is exhibiting at this year’s The British Motor Show at Farnborough this weekend to highlight its concerns on the UK’s skills shortage and showcase the industry’s career opportunities for people of all ages, abilities, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.
