Back Automotive and Reap £50bn Growth
y New analysis shows UK automotive sector can fuel £50 billion of green growth over next decade – with the right conditions in place.
y Smart policies and consumer incentives would help 17 million drivers switch to zero emission motoring by 2035, halving the number of fossil fuel cars in use.
y UK light vehicle manufacturing could deliver more than a million EVs a year by 2035, growing sector’s value by 5% on current outlook.
y SMMT’s Vision 2035: Ready to Grow signposts how sector can be the engine of job creation and carbon cutting while delivering a fair transition for all.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is calling on the next government to work in partnership with the automotive industry to unleash its full potential and deliver growth worth £50 billion over the next decade – in the process helping millions more drivers switch to zero emission motoring.
New research shows that targeted policies would see the new car market value grow from just over £70 billion a year today to almost £80 billion every year over the next decade, with more than 17 million fossil fuel cars replaced by zero emission vehicles by the end of 2035. At the same time, more than a million EV cars and vans could be rolling off production lines every year, increasing the sector’s value by 5% over the current outlook.1
The analysis forms the basis for Vision 2035: Ready to Grow, published today at the 16th SMMT International Automotive Summit. Building on SMMT’s Manifesto 2030, published last year, it sets out a clear cross-party plan to strengthen the market, bolster Britain’s trade, upskill the workforce, provide low-cost, low carbon electricity and deliver an industrial transformation strategy that will transition the UK to a net zero future – with the automotive sector providing green economic growth.
Market modelling has revealed that even halving VAT on new retail EV purchases for just the next three years would an additional 300,000 new zero emission car registrations on top of our current outlook – putting in total 2.3 million new zero emission cars on the road during that time. This would create a snowball effect for Britain’s net zero transition, dramatically accelerating overall EV car uptake over the next decade to more than 17 million, delivering £800 billion of revenue and meaning that by 2035, half of all cars in use would be zero emission. Such a step would see car emissions cumulatively drop by 175 MtCO2.2
Concurrently, steps to increase the UK’s global competitiveness in light vehicle production would see more than nine million zero emission cars and vans roll out of British factories between now and the end of 2035 – delivering more than £290 billion in revenue at factory gate prices, an increase of 5% on the current outlook.
FEMALES IN FOCUS 2024
This month we turn the spotlight on an another of this year’s inspiring panel – Julie Viljoen, Aftersales Performance Manager at Toyota (GB).
We are delighted to announce Julie Viljoen as a distinguished panellist for this year’s Females in Focus event, hosted by the Scottish Motor Trade Association. Taking place on Friday, 20th September 2024, at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, this event celebrates women’s achievements and contributions in the motor trade industry.
Julie Viljoen brings over two decades of invaluable experience in the automotive sector, having navigated various roles from apprentice service advisor to aftersales director. Her career has been defined by resilience and perseverance in overcoming significant challenges and stereotypes that women often face in aftersales roles. Julie has firsthand experience of addressing prejudices that undermine women’s capabilities in technical fields and the unfair assumptions regarding their
commitment and abilities due to family responsibilities.
Reflecting on her journey, Julie notes, “As a woman, you can face many prejudices in the motor trade, especially within aftersales.” She has encountered scepticism about her technical understanding and even inquiries about her future plans for motherhood during job interviews. Despite these obstacles, Julie’s dedication to her work has been unwavering. She has consistently prioritised her team’s well-being and work-life balance, setting an admirable example of leadership and empathy in the industry.
Julie found a supportive environment at Toyota (GB), where her abilities were recognised and valued without judgment regarding her personal life.
“At Toyota (GB), I found a culture that
allows me to excel professionally while also embracing my role as a mother,” she reflects. “This inclusive approach has been instrumental in my career growth.”
Julie Viljoen will bring her wealth of experience and insights to the Females in Focus panel, where she will engage with the audience, sharing perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in the motor trade industry. Her presence promises to enrich discussions on diversity, leadership, and the evolving role of women in automotive careers.
Join us for this inspiring event and participate in the conversation with Julie Viljoen and other esteemed panellists as we celebrate and empower women in the motor trade industry.

Gordon Motors celebrates 45 years as Suzuki dealer
Gordon Motors, a family-run Suzuki business in Crieff Scotland, is celebrating 45 years with Suzuki GB. The dealership was recently voted the number one dealer in the UK for both aftersales service and trust.
The dealership’s story began in a small showroom, where it offered two models; the Suzuki Carry ST80 and the Suzuki LJ80.
Dale Wyatt, director automobile Suzuki GB PLC, said: “We congratulate Gordon and his team on this remarkable milestone.
We are thrilled to celebrate 45 years of successful partnership with Gordon Motors. The team’s dedication to
the Suzuki brand and outstanding commitment to customer service has been instrumental in their success over the years.’’ Gordon Petrie, director at Gordon Motors, said: “We would like to thank Suzuki and our customers for their continued support. Suzuki has been very kind to us these last 45 years.
“We still have customers who purchased vehicles from us in 1979 and I think this loyalty is in great part down to the range and reliability of the Suzuki product, as
well as a high level of trust. “We would like to thank our members of staff who have worked with us over the years, as well as our current team. I am also providing a special mention to our Service Manager, Ian Lemon, who has been with us for over 20 years and has built an excellent relationship based on trust and product knowledge with our customers.”

EU Commission’s provisional countervailing duties on Chinese electric cars imports
The European Council for Motor Trades and Repairs (CECRA) acknowledges the European Commission’s decision to impose additional customs duties ranging from 17.4% to 38.1% on electric cars imported from China, effective from July 4th.
This decision follows a nine-month investigation into allegations of unfair state subsidies for Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEVs), including brands such as BYD, Geely and SAIC.
The EU Commission stated: “The provisional findings of the EU antisubsidy investigation indicate that the entire BEV value chain benefits heavily from unfair subsidies in China, and that the influx of subsidised Chinese imports at artificially low prices therefore presents a threat of clearly foreseeable
and imminent injury to EU industry.”
The investigation will continue for several months until the Commission decides whether to propose definitive antisubsidy measures. Member states will have to vote on such a proposal.
CECRA emphasizes that free and fair trade is essential for a competitive European automotive industry, driving innovation and providing consumers with more choices. However, it is crucial that this competition ensures a level playing field for all competitors. The
imposition of these duties will have repercussions for dealers and repairers, especially those representing the brands under investigation.
The added duties are expected to impact car prices and, consequently, sales volumes. CECRA remains committed to closely monitoring the situation, reacted CECRA Director General, Bernard Lycke.
Continuing 12-volt battery issues risk hindering electric van adoption: AFP
The Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) is urging improvements in 12-volt battery technology, as “bricking” issues continue to hamper the adoption of electric vans.
“The core issue is that when an electric van is left idle for a few weeks, the 12-volt battery depletes, making it impossible to start or recharge the vehicle,” explained Paul Hollick, AFP chair. “This forces a return to the franchise dealer, and it can take weeks to resolve.”
Hollick noted that some members have received electric vans already in this state and had to reject them immediately.
The AFP highlights that 12-volt battery technology significantly lags behind
advances in electric vehicle batteries. Manufacturers often suggest revised software to prolong 12-volt battery life as an immediate solution.
“Some manufacturers promise new software within weeks or months, while others are vague, frustrating fleet operators,” Hollick continued. “Even with a fix, the bricking issue will persist, just delayed, underscoring the technology’s weaknesses. Extending battery life to 3-4 weeks for holiday periods would be an improvement.”
“One AFP member is considering a £1 million investment in solar panels, highlighting the problem’s scope,” said Hollick. “While this fix could extend battery life, the van could still eventually brick. This issue likely won’t be fully resolved until the next generation of electric vans. Manufacturers need to step up.”
