In some spotless server room in Silicon Valley, there sits a digital profile of yourself. A carbon copy of everything you’ve clicked on while using Google or social media. The information is out there — being taken, stored, transferred or sold to advertisers. And by agreeing to internet companies’ terms and conditions, more often than not, you’re handing over your right to protect your privacy.

COFFEHOUSE

​A

s the school year comes to a close, I am starting to hear the word “last” a lot. Last homecoming. Last monotony breaker. Last column in the newspaper.

And as I’m starting to realize that this is indeed my last year at St. Mark’s, I start to think about why I first came to this school. ​Many people come to St. Mark’s to receive an outstanding education. To go to a great college. To be a part of a competitive environment that makes anyone the best possible student he can be. ​And to be perfectly honest — as a callow, know-it-all fifth grader — I thought I was attending St. Mark’s for those exact reasons. The school’s state and national rankings captivated me.

The preppy white uniforms made me feel important. And when it was all said and done, I knew that attending a college wouldn’t be a problem. ​St. Mark’s was like a pedestal that represented excellence. And when I finally starting attending classes as a fifth grader, I wanted to soar 30 miles above said pedestal and remain there because that’s what St. Mark’s kids do. Right? ​But my overly zealous perception of St. Mark’s had taken a toll on me. By the time I was in eighth grade, I was struggling to survive in the competitive environment I had made for myself. I wasn’t the academic demigod that I had hoped to be. And all of the prestige of attending a private school didn’t sound so enticing to me anymore. ​So what I’m trying to say is that people come to St. Mark’s for different reasons. But one thing remains constant: this school shapes you into who you are. ​Before I came to St. Mark’s, I thought journalism was for want-to-be authors who worked in cubicles all day.

I thought football was a sport for 300-pound jockeys, and I didn’t even know what lacrosse was.

RISH BASU ​I don’t really Managing Editor know how, but this school — in the most literal sense — changed who I am.

St. Mark’s is more than just fighting for the “A” in math and science courses or receiving admission to top 10 colleges.

It’s more than the state and national rankings. ​While all of that stuff is great and makes me proud to attend such a prestigious school, it’s not what I’m going to remember. Where I thought I was going to St. Mark’s in order to leave the school as an academic superstar, I am now leaving the school with an understanding of who I am as a person and what a brotherhood truly is. ​After eight years, I am proud to say that I made a lot of mistakes. As a matter of fact, this whole process has been trial and error. Some people know exactly what they are going to do once they get to St. Mark’s. And I thought that I was one of those people. ​Even though it took me a while to find my passions here, everyone does sooner or later. And that’s what I am most thankful for. Whether it’s the faculty, alumni, administration or students, the St. Mark’s community finds a way to shape you into the man you will become.

As a fifth grader, I thought I was going to be the ultra-motivated kid who thrived in a hyper-competitive environment. Even though it took me four years to realize that’s not who I am, St. Mark’s found a way to put me on the right track while providing me with passions for the rest of my life. ​This column is supposed to serve as my final farewell to the school. And its only right that The ReMarker is my platform to do it. ​To The ReMarker staff: this is the peak of journalism, and I’m going to miss the work Saturdays, late night sessions and writing stories on Google documents. ​As my high school journalism career ends in these couple paragraphs, I’m going to officially promise myself here to keep journalism in my life in one way or another. ​Thank you St. Mark’s. MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN WORD COMPETITION A select group of Middle School students competed in the first ever Good Words Contest April 12. Drawing inspiration from previous years’ Shakespeare contests, the competition gave students the opportunity to choose a passage from more than 17 movies, historical events and other documents then recite it with their own personal flair.

ALUMNI TO ATTEND REUNION ON CAMPUS Alumni from all over the country will flock once again to campus April 20-22, reuniting with classmates and teachers at the campus reuinons.

The annual awards will be presented to distinguished alumni, and awards will be given out to specific classes for outstanding contributions to the community here.

Director of admissions and Financial aid David Baker expressed his excitement for the

coming weekend and seeing past friends and students.

“I love to see these guys and sometimes they come back after significant periods of time away from campus,” Baker said. “You can get disconnected from these guys really quick and it’s great to see them when they come home.”

LOWER SCHOOL PLAYGROUND TO BE RECONSTRUCTED Due to the construction of the new science center, the Lower School playground will be taken down and rebuilt this summer. The playground has to be relocated and rebuilt in order to make more room for the Winn Family Science Center.

Construction on the playground will begin in June and be finished before the school year starts in August.

“Everything is going to be new, from the surface to the top of the tower,” Head of Lower School Sherri Darver said. “The space will be completely different.

It’ll be really exciting in the fall when it’s all done and ready for the boys before they start school.”

CUM LAUDE INDUCTION TO TAKE PLACE NEXT WEEK The Cum Laude

Induction Ceremony will take place April 22 at 3:15. The purpose of this program is to recognize high academic performance of members of the Junior and Senior classes.

Up to 10 percent of juniors and 20 percent of seniors can be inducted. A board of faculty members will select the new inductees based on their academic achievements.

PARENTS AND ALUMNI DONATE RECORD AMOUNT TO FUND In 2016 parents and alumni donated a record breaking 3.8 million dollars to the St. Mark’s Fund, exceeding last year’s goal by $600,000. T With ninety- three percent of parents and fifty-nine percent of alumni participating last year, the school received more than ten percent of the annual operating budget through donations to the fund alone.

KURT EICHENWALD EPILEPSY

INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST AND ALUMNUS KURT EICHENWALD TRUDGES FORWARD IN THE FACE OF HARDSHIP IN SPITE OF HIS EPILEPTIC CONDITION AND THE DANGERS SUCH A THREAT POSES. LASTING IMPACT Even though Kurt and his wife Theresa lived in New York when they married, they moved to Dallas to send their three sons to Kurt’s alma mater.

urt Eichenwald ’79 groggily opened his eyes and immediately felt the snow surrounding his

body.

Then the cold hit.

He had just awoken from a seizure, a symptom of his lifelong epilepsy — and he’d been completely buried in a blizzard.

Confusion, drowsiness and disorientation hit him on all sides.

But Eichenwald didn’t pause.

He clawed his way out of several feet of snow, tearing the skin off the back of his hands to keep himself awake.

When that seizure hit, Eichenwald, now a 55-year-old father of three, was a college student at Swarthmore.

Thirty-five years later, Eichenwald hasn’t stopped clawing. A career journalist most recently working for the New York Times, Eichenwald has tirelessly fought corruption and injustice, bringing society’s darkest problems to the forefront of discussion.

Eichenwald set his sights on President Trump’s administration, all in the pursuit of truth and transparency.

He doesn’t need pity. He doesn’t want pity. All he wants is to change the world.

Eichenwald’s son, Adam Eichenwald ’10, has witnessed his father’s extraordinary willpower firsthand.

“My dad is one of the most driven people I have ever seen,” Adam said, “particularly when he sees a bully stepping on someone weaker. Nothing gets him more focused than perceived injustice. I have seen him work seven days a week on stories to help stop people from getting hurt.”

Adam has seen his father battle his entire life on two fronts: one as a public ambassador for freedom and truth and one in his home as a man who values every day like it’s his last.

“It takes a brush of mortality to make you realize that every day counts,” Adam said. “Before his condition was controlled, he came very close to death.

It drove him to work as hard as he could in his field, partly because he felt that he needed to earn his good fortune and

partly to prove that his condition did not define who he was as a person.”

Using his epilepsy as an inspiration for his esteemed medical and financial investigative journalism, Kurt has shown that a condition does not define a man— rather, it is a man’s actions that write his story.

“I’ve found that there are two main things he can’t stand: pity from non-epileptics and epileptics who sit around feeling sorry for themselves,” Adam said. “His condition was about as WITHOUT bad as it can be, EPILEPSY, I and he still fought DOUBT MY through it and DAD WOULD became a man BE THE MAN that I look up to HE IS TODAY. as my role model. — ADAM He doesn’t have EICHENWALD patience for others who use the condition as a way of never accomplishing anything.”

Kurt suffers from idiopathic epilepsy, meaning there is no known cause for his seizures in the brain or otherwise.

Because of the constant threat of a sudden seizure or collapse, Kurt no longer drives or sits in areas where he could fall and be trapped.

Dr. Elmyra Encarnacion, a practicing neurologist, notes that the underlying cause of seizures stem from a problem in the nerve cells.

“A seizure occurs when there is an abrupt burst of abnormal electrical activity that spreads from one nerve cell to the neighboring cells,” Encarnacion said.

“It’s like an over-firing of nerve cells. The cells’ hyperactivity, leading to a seizure, can temporarily disrupt the normal function of the affected brain area or areas.”

But some of the biggest dangers rear their ugly heads after-the-fact.

“Sometimes, a seizure can lead to a state where the patient complains of memory loss after an episode (postictal state),” Encarnacion said. aving an episode in the eye of a blizzard can be one of the most dangerous situations to overcome for an

epileptic. Juggling his epilepsy and his responsibilities as an acclaimed journalist isn’t easy, but Kurt never loses focus.

“My dad has been sick for decades and came close to death a number of times,” Adam said. “Despite this, he fought through to become a success.

He’s living proof that even in the worst of times you can’t stop fighting for your future or worry about what might go wrong. You can’t let fear run your life.”

In spite of Kurt’s reputation for investigative, revealing journalism and absolute truth, Adam also knows how highly his father values being unquestionably available to help others in need.

“He’s incredibly kind and forgiving,” Adam said. “He goes out of his way to help people, be they friends or strangers.”

This compassion is part of Kurt’s identity as an advocate for humanity— and part of what makes the recent cyberattack on his life via use of a strobed tweet so shocking. True to its purpose, the attack sent Eichenwald into a severe seizure. (Note: Kurt Eichenwald was unable to talk to The ReMarker due to the pending litigation in relation to the attack).

“Forcing a seizure onto an epileptic is despicable,” Adam said. “The only difference between them and another disabled individual is that their injury is on their brain — essentially invisible. No one of character would defend assaulting a man with a physical vulnerability, and it should be no different for epileptics.”

Although the details of the crime are under investigation, one thing is clear: Kurt Eichenwald may be temporarily slowed down, but he will recover. He will keep fighting for truth and justice.

He will never stop clawing.

“Everyone thinks their dad is a superhero when they’re kids, and to be honest, that kind of stuck with me through my life,” Adam said. “He’s a journalist, he always fights for truth and what he thinks is right and he has a weakness. To me, he’s always been a real-life version of Superman — kryptonite and everything.”

WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE HAS A SEIZURE

AN UNFORGETTABLE LEGACY

1) Turn the victim onto their side to assist their breathing.

2) Clear the area of anything hard or sharp that could injure the victim.

3) Cushion their head with a folded jacket.

4) Remove any eyewear and loosen any clothing that restricts breathing.

5) Call 911 if the seizure lasts more than five minutes.

1) Do not restrict the victim’s movement.

2) Do not put anything in their mouth, as that can break their teeth.

3) Do not perform CPR. 4) Do not try to stop the seizure.

5) Do not call 911 immediately unless the person injures themself or has never had a seizure before.

The Eichenwalds have been involved with the school for three generations, starting with Kurt’s mother, Elva, the former school nurse. The Nurse’s Office was named in honor of her service.

who is KURT EICHENWALD? Kurt is a member of the Class of 1979 and a distinguished alum. After leaving 10600 Preston Road, he graduated from Swarthmore with a degree in political science.

Kurt’s first legal challenge was his successful battle against his dismissal from Swarthmore after suffering two outdoor seizures.

He is the father of three former Marksmen: Adam ’10, Ryan ’13 and Sam ’16.

He has worked with many publications including Newsweek, Vanity Fair and the New York Times.

Kurt has also written four books, one of which, The Informant, was made into a movie in 2009. His most successful book was Conspiracy of Fools, based on his investigation of Enron Oil. He has won the Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism, the George Polk Award for Excellence in Journalism twice and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 and 2002.

Bitter phone calls.

Most Americans will never experience any of these hateful acts, but for some Jewish Americans, these are just a few of the daily occurrences resulting from their religious beliefs.

Even students at 10600 Preston Road have begun to feel the effects of hate crimes and are left wondering how this is still happening in 2017.

Junior Sam Shane had always heard stories about the discrimination and persecution of Jews but never experienced it himself.

“These were things I’d grown up reading about in history books,” Shane said.

On Jan. 9, however, Jewish Community Centers (JCC) around the nation received bomb threats.

mitic attacks like these bomb threats usually happen just as one incident,” Shane said.

Nine days later, a second wave of threatening phone call and threats were made. This time, the Aaron Family Jewish Community Center of Dallas, a place Shane visits weekly, was among the many JCCs that received a threatening phone call.

“It wasn’t until I heard about the second wave of bomb threats about a week and a half later that I realized that it was a coordinated attack against JCCs around the country,” Shane said.

Sophomore Seth Weprin, another member of the Dallas JCC, was also surprised by the news.

“I heard about the threats from a couple of friends,” Weprin said. “I didn’t actually see the email from the JCC until a couple days after it happened. I didn’t think a whole lot about it, but then when I saw the email, I realized it was serious. I didn’t really know how to respond.” ven though this was the first bomb threat the Dallas JCC had received in 20 years, leaders of the center knew exactly what to do.

“The JCC evacuated the entire building, from the gym to the preschool, and called in the local police and bomb squad to investigate,” Shane said.

“Thankfully, all threats thus far have been empty, but they nonetheless disrupt the day and scare everyone there.”

Despite the enormity and viciousness of the threats, the Jewish community has stood in solidarity and remained strong.

“I don’t know if it really had a lasting effect,” Weprin said, “but for a while, there were some people that were very scared. I think we just need to stand up to it like we always have.”

Shane believes solidarity is the solution to the threats against JCCs. “What [the bomb threats] caused is vigilance,” Shane said. “Jewish people now have to keep an extra eye out, maybe sleep with one eye open. We are always going to stand in solidarity with each other but now even more so than ever.”

Reverend Stephen Arbogast believes the bomb threats indicate that something is wrong with society today, and the core STEPHEN ARBOGAST believes religious leaders have the duty of ending discrimination

Sophomore Carter Langbert plans year in Mexico

M

ost students stick to a traditional four years in high school, even including semesters abroad. Sophomore Carter Langbert, however, plans to take the road less traveled and attend his junior year in Mexico in hopes of advanding his language and culture studies.

Along with his father’s coordination, what originated as a trip to Spain transformed into the idea of spending the entirety of next school year in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

“My dad wants me to mature more, practice my Spanish and get ahead in

math and science with the extra year,” Langbert said.

Although Langbert will take junior level courses at his school in Mexico, he will have to repeat his third year of Upper School, however, and graduate with a less familiar class – a drawback he’s willing to deal with.

“I have to join the Class of 2020 if I want to come back [to the school],” Langbert said, “but I won’t have to go through the whole admission process [again], but I will have to be interviewed.”

Langbert plans to escape his comfort

zone and completely isolate himself from the English language.

“I’ll stay with a host family so I can be fully immersed with the culture and language,” Langbert said.

Going beyond classroom discussions, Langbert will have the opportunity to experience Mexican markets, food and cooking first hand.

“I’m excited to try all the new dishes there that I learned about in Spanish class,” Langbert said, “not to mention going to the market in town, as I’ve heard that they sell really interesting cuisine.”

Shane points out that these recent attacks are caused by the current political climate.

“President Trump’s election has emboldened the alt-right and even the neo-Nazi movements in today’s America,” Shane said. “As they saw some of the rhetoric that he was spitting out during his campaign, the alt-right and neo-Nazis felt that it was their time to ‘strike.’ The threats and vandalism that have happened have happened only since election day, so yes, I do think there’s a correlation.”

Arbogast also thinks some of these issues can be traced back to politics and the rhetoric that is being used.

“Certainly many established and thoughtful political commentators seem to think that the current political climate allows for more violent threats, and some believe is encouraging that,” Arbogast said. “That’s beyond what I could say for myself personally, but certainly lot’s of people believe that we entered into a new political climate over the last 18 months or so that is not as healthy as it may have been in the past.”

To fix the problem, Shane emphasizes a simple yet important lesson taught to children.

“I hope that the discrimination goes back down,” Shane said. “It’s really elementary, but I do believe that if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all.”

TRUMP BUDGET CUTS

HERE COMES THE MONEY FILL YOURSELF IN ON WHAT PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS PROPOSED FOR HIS 2018 BUDGET

A

fter almost 100 days in office, President Trump has not been shy about his intentions to change the budget for the upcoming 2018 fiscal year, which starts in October.

Though the budget is still pending approval by Congress, a staggering 62 federal programs could be defunct as of this fall, with the money primarily going toward the defense budget. Here are some of the more notable programs and how they might be affected:

Environmental Protection Agency If the proposed budget passes, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will likely be one of the hardest hit programs.

Entering the final year of its 2014-2018 strategic plan, the EPA would allocate about $2.6 billion less toward addressing climate change and protecting America’s waterways, some of its upcoming goals.

Health and Human Services Next, the Department of Health and Human Services could lose up to $12.6 billion in funding. A notable portion from those funds could be taken out of funds allocated to biomedical research and other scientific endeavors. Programs meant to assist low-income families could also see a considerable decrease in funding.

English instructor Curtis Smith gives his perspective on the importance of after-school and summer programs, some of which may be severely undercut by Trump’s proposed budget:

Department of Defense Funding for the Department of Defense, however, is on track to recieve a massive boost. A total of $52.3 billion, approximately ten percent more than last fiscal year, could be used to bulk up the military or fight against ISIS. Notably, the U.S. Defense budget will still top those of the next seven highest-spending countries combined.

National Endowment for the Arts/Humanities A variety of programs such as the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities are in danger of being completely eliminated under the proposed budget. Other indiviudal programs such as National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting Service might also become obsolete in an effort to save approximately $750 million.

“If you took away federal funding and many social programs that help people, all those churches, all the nonprofits, all the synagogues, all the other private and religious organizations that are not government-funded, could never handle the load. If you severed all those social welfare programs of the federal government, there wouldn’t be enough money or churches or organizations to accomadate all those people.”

Seniors rank nationally in USA Biology Olympiad

by Kamal Mamdani enior Parker Kirby and junior Alan Jiang were named as semifinalists in the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO), placing in the top 10% of almost 5,000 high school students across the nation.

Anyone in the country was eligible to take the USABO open exam, so 50 St. Mark’s students competed, 40 of whom are taking AP Biology.

Of those 40, every student placed at or above the national average.

Students took the test in February, but

Kirby and Jiang advanced to the next level, taking another test during the last week of March. If either of them score as one of the top 20 students, they will advance to the international competition.

Neither Kirby nor Jiang expected to advance to the semifinal round, since they did not do much studying outside of their biology class curriculum.

“Unlike other students who studied for hours for the test, I never really expected reaching the semifinals,” Jiang said.

“Reaching the semifinals wasn’t really

a goal that I’ve been trying to get, but rather just a pleasant surprise.”

AP Biology instructor Mark Adame said the only way Kirby and Jiang were able to make the semifinals was because they have a very strong understanding of Biology, a given for someone to be successful in such a difficult test.

“The open exam is purposefully hard, it’s to weed people who are not strong conestants out,” Adame said. “To make the semifinals, it means that you are in a fairly elite group of students nationwide.”

Kirby believes that although he has a background in Biology, the reason he scored so high was from logic.

“To be honest, I knew none of the answers to the problems, I just logically guessed for all of them,” Kirby said.

“I didn’t even prepare directly for it, but I have a background in biology which probably helped.”

Results for the semifinal round come out in late April, so Kirby and Jiang hope that the skills that got them to the semifinal round will carry them even further.

SMITH AND STEWART 40 YEARS

The big Waseem Nabulsi: What are a couple of your favorite memories that you’ve had here?

Curtis Smith: I can remember first driving out here long ago. I was 27 years old and I was finishing up in Durham at Duke.

The first year’s experiences are much more impressionable and lasting and the students are as well. Somehow, I can remember some of the earliest students vividly because everything was so fresh and new.

I remember too, the first little faculty gathering here. It was just a little hamburger thing outside of the library and Maxine had this big bucket of ice, and she went over there to the headmaster and took his feet out of his sandals and shoved them into the ice bucket. I said, “Well, I think I’m going to like this school because if this woman can roughhouse and play around with the headmaster, it’s going to be a good combination.”

WN: What is your favorite part of the job?

CS: I like the classroom. I like preparing for class. To me, it’s like drama in the sense that it’s theater—you prepare, you block out what you’re hoping what’s going to be happen and then the show starts, and you hope the audience follows what you do. I also like various times during the day.

I like the 10:30 hour. You go out to assembly or chapel and there’s so many students just playing games in the green courtyard—and imaginative games, not just organized games, sort of free-for-all games and activities.

I always think of St. Mark’s as somewhat of a small town. It’s a town in that we have a mayor, we have a storekeeper, we’ve got a restaurant, we’ve got plumbers and electricians, we’ve got young children, we’ve got old people and older students, we’ve got adults. And it’s all within a good walking confine.

WN: What is the hardest part of your job?

CS: I’ve always thought it would be a daunting image to stack up all of the papers that I’ve graded in 40 years. [Grading essays] makes teaching more like tutoring because you’re really one-on-one with that particular student, but that comes with the territory. That’s where I hope students do recognize that it’s one-onone—it’s specific for them.

WN: Who from the school’s community has had the biggest impact on you during your 40 years here?

CS: St. Mark’s is a wonderful place—I think the regret is that there’s not enough time to be as friendly as you want to be. We are quite driven, and that’s part of the excitement of the school.

I would hate to start singling out individuals and feel that I would fail to recognize someone else.

I have great memories of people here—just lots of wonderful people. I love the policemen— they’re part of the small town. The security people—they’ve just been a wonderful addition.

I think [coach Kevin] Dilworth has been a wonderful addition to the school too. There’s just so many wonderful people, and they’re right here in this fairly confined area.

WN: What would you say is the most important lesson you’ve learned during your time here?

CS: I have learned huge amounts of knowledge.

It’s so easy to just read and not really learn, but when you’re forced to read and present it in a way that’s consumable by 15-16 people, you have to figure out the best way so that you can convey that information.

One of the biggest problems of learning is, too often, we are merely familiar with information instead of mastering the information. I also think the school has done an excellent job at attacking the three main targets of any learning institution. Without question, it goes after your mind to enhance it as best as it can, it goes after your body as well [to] offers ways to make you stronger and healthier and it goes after your heart as well [with] religious services, spiritual services, community services—all of which train and educate your heart.

WN: What is the most important piece of advice you can give a student?

CS: I think St. Mark’s is a wonderful candy store—hundreds of flavors—and no flavor plays second fiddle to any other flavor. [With] everything the school undertakes, it wants to maximize the opportunity.

If you want to be a tiddlywinks champion and go to the national level, we’ll promote that.

So, there’s lots of flavors and lots of things to sample from and promote, so now’s the time to sample.

SINCE 1977 Near the start of his career at the school, Howard Stewart stirs the next meal all students are looking forward to.

WN: What is your favorite memory from the school?

Howard Stewart: When they first built the cafeteria here, we served lunch out of a tent. It was called “the black top,” and that was kind of interesting feeding 700 or 800 students out of a tent. That was in the ‘80s I think.

because I talk loud and they think that I’m shouting. Some people say, “You’re shouting at me,” but I just talk loud. Some of the guys think I talk mean, but I want them to think that.

WN: I’ve been told that you take time out of your summer to cook a dinner to the recently graduated seniors right before they go off to college. Why do you do that?

HS: The guys are leaving to go to college, and they get one last lunch at St. Mark’s until they decide to come back and visit. That last lunch is special for them, and I like doing it.

WN: When you first came here, did you think you would stay this long?

HS: No, I never thought I would stay this long.

When I first came here, I had a friend who used to work here. I was working at Northpark at the time. He told me that there was a position open here, and I left Northpark to come here, and I’ve been here ever since.

This job was inside, and it was either work or go to the service, and I didn’t want to go to the service at the time, so I started working here in 1977.

WN: Which person on campus has had the biggest impact on you?

HS: It would have to be [director of Food Services Sally] Stephens because she’s kind and can speak up. So, I’d have to say it’s her, she’s great.

WN: How did you adjust to being a cook here?

HS: Actually, when I changed position to being an assistant cook, there were three ladies who helped me out a lot at school. I learned a lot from my mom at home. When we would eat as a family, I would sit and watch her.

When I got here and started in the kitchen, the ladies showed me a lot too. So, that was pretty neat too. I liked that.

WN: What is one thing you would want the school to know about you or the cafeteria?

HS: Most of the teachers know, but some of the newer students that just joined the St. Mark’s family don’t know what goes on in the cafeteria, but other than that, the team we have developed is a good team, which took a lot of pressure off of me. Sometimes I would find myself doing a little bit too much, but now, everyone is involved. I’m really grateful.

WN: What is the hardest part of your job?

HS: There is nothing hard about the job, but you have 14 or 15 people that you have to position correctly, and there is a language barrier. That can be difficult. Everyone works together, and we have a really good team.

The longer people stay, the better we do.

WN: What is a way for students to help in the cafeteria?

HS: I think that students should learn a little bit more about the cafeteria and learn some rules and regulations. If we follow the rules and regulations, it helps a lot. Say for instance, we have pasta bar. We can only fit six guys at a time in there because that helps everyone get in and out really quickly.

Plus, it’s a fire hazard. If the kids follow the rules a little stricter, everything would be just fine.

WN: What is the best lesson you have learned in your time here?

HS: Most of it is being kind and generous to people. A lot of people take me wrong

Alumni return to campus for annual weekend festivities

by Lyle Ochs lumni Weekend this year will take place April 20-22 and will honor faculty and staff members Curtis Smith, Howard Stewart and Warren Foxworth ’66.

The three day event will bring back more than 1,100 Marksmen in order to participate in the activities taking place over the weekend.

According to Alex Eshelbrenner ’04, director of alumni relations, alumni will participate in a golf tournament, Alumni Chapel, and a cookout over the course of the weekend.

On Thursday, 120 Marksmen will participate in a golf tournament at Brookhaven Country Club, and later that day, they will be offered the opportunity to visit classes and participate in alumni specific classes taught by Tom Adams, John Ashton and JT Sutcliffe.

“We strongly believe in the fact that the St. Mark’s experience involves lifelong learning opportunities,” Eshelbrenner said. “People are excited to come home and be able to hear from some of their beloved teachers that they had in school.”

On Friday night, alumni will attend the Spring Alumni Dinner where Smith and Stewart will be recognized for 40 years of service to the school and Foxworth will be recognized, as he is retiring at the end of the year.

In addition to the faculty and staff already being recognized, the three finalists for the Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award will be announced.

On Saturday, around 600 alumni will gather with their families for a cookout on the Perot Quadrangle. The cookout will offer many activities including campus tours, a chemistry show and a planetarium visit.

“This is the last chance many alumni will get to see the science center the way we know it now,” Eshelbrenner said.

Later that night, 14 different alumni reunion parties will occur with their locations spread across Dallas.

Eshelbrenner is proud to see all of his effort and all the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers pay off during this weekend.

“There is so much planning involved in Alumni Weekend, and there have been so many faculty, staff and volunteers, literally hundreds of people, who have put so much effort into making it a success for the roughly 1,100 people coming back on campus,” Eshelbrenner said. “To see all of our efforts pay off so that alumni can relive their days as a student here and get to have that conversation with a friend or teacher they haven’t seen in years is special.”

The one word that came to mind when sophomore Ayush Saha looked up at the small village school in India where he was going to volunteer.

Grateful for his hot meals at home in Dallas.

Grateful for the fact that he has more than two pairs of clothes.

Grateful for his air conditioning, electricity and running water.

The school was started by Ajit Kumar Saha, Ayush’s grandfather.

During spring break, Ayush traveled to Sundarban, India with his mother and father to volunteer there.

He knew he would be teaching art, math and English, but he didn’t realize how much he would learn from the 200 elementary students.

“Going into the experience, I didn’t know what it would be like,” Ayush said. “It’s very different. It’s hard. It gives you a different kind of happiness.”

In addition to helping out in the classroom, Ayush played with the kids during their recess.

“The best part was during their free time,” Ayush said. “I held a mini track race with them. I split the group of kids into two teams. I set up different races of different lengths, different obstacle courses, and I just had them run. It was kind of hard

because there were 200 kids, but they had a fun time.”

According to Ayush’s mother, Sabori, the school had already been involving the students in physical education.

“It’s all about the healthy body and the healthy mind so that they can focus on their studies and not be bogged down by them,” Sabori said.

Ayush and Sabori also provided lunch, and for some students, breakfast and dinner didn’t exist.

“They come to school to get a free meal every day,” Sabori said. “I wanted to show Ayush an experience in person rather than just telling the story.”

The lack of food was the most vivid memory Ayush has from the trip because it opened his eyes to a world where the problems children face are surreal.

“Serving the children their daily

meal was fulfilling,” Ayush said.

“Yes, they’re going to school for education, but at the same time they’re just going there for the one free meal every single day. They need the meal because they are starving, and they don’t have food at home.”

Nourishment is just one item on a long list of basic needs that the kids don’t have.

“We all have very privileged lives, so we have to go out and get into the real world and look at other people’s hardships,” Sabori said. “The best thing to do is help other kids, whether it’s providing food, education, money, clothing or anything.” yush is involved with the community service program at home, but he says the difference between community service here and in India is drastic.

“I tutor chess every Wednesday for community service,” Ayush said.

“What I realize is that the kids are very appreciative of it, but the difference between the kids here and the kids there is that the kids over there pour their whole lives into it. Their whole life, everything that they’re doing is to get an education.”

Both agree that credit goes to Ajit, who founded the school in order to give the children a better tool

“He chose a very, very poor village of the part where he thought that education is needed in this part of the village,” Sabori said. “It’s a tiny village where most of the people are farmers. Their lands are taken by the government.”

Sabori says the government took advantage of the region in order to acquire land, using the people’s general illiteracy against them.

“The government comes and says, ‘I need this land from you.’ The villagers cannot read what is there [on the contract],” Sabori said. “They put their palm print and their land is taken by the government. Ayush’s grandfather taught, ‘Let’s not repeat this mistake with the next generation.’”

Ajit, who attended Oxford University, wanted to travel to the region in India where attention and education would be needed the most out of the other regions. He believes it is the way out of poverty.

“He thought the best way to bring change in this country is by giving education,” Sabori said.

“That’s how he chose that, by asking himself ‘how can I help people?’

Ayush’s grandfather thought, ‘If I give education, these people will understand how the world works.’”

What business do you run?

So I started a DJ company when I was a sophomore here at St. Mark’s in 1998 in May, and I‘ve been DJing for almost 20 years. I also do inflatable rentals on the side like bounce houses, water slides and other inflatable amusement games.

What is it like having an aunt who used to teach here?

When I was a student here, it was like having another mom. Whenever I did something I wasn’t supposed to do, some people would have to wait for a call home, I generally would get in trouble on the way home.

Having an additional person who is in my family and keeping me accountable I think was a very positive thing for me. I think she’s got a very storied career here as a first grade teacher, and I can interact with boys form the 11th and 12th grade who’s one of their first [teachers] in St. Mark’s was one of my first teachers in life.

It creates a pretty strong bond.

What is it like having a dad who works on a well-known radio station such as 106.1 KISS FM? It was much different when I was younger, so when I was a student here, my dad talked a lot about my experience on the radio. Now that I’m older, he doesn’t talk as much about it, so it’s actually much cooler now that I don’t feel like it so much defines who I am.

What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject was physics. My favorite experience with a teacher and learning about the world around me and how it works was in Dr. [Stephen] Balog’s physics class. It’s really about the teacher.

They all inspired me to ask questions about the world around me and never be satisfied that I know it all, or that I even know it in the first place because they kind of instilled in me what you can depend on as true, and what you can depend on today is not necessarily the absolute truth and we have to continue to search for it and that’s what makes a bright and intelligent young man and hopefully you can lead others for that search.

The play is centered around a group of sailors on a cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean during World War II and the relationships between the members as well as what daily life was like on a cargo vessel.

“So it’s a very big male cast, if not all male,” Fine Arts Department Chair Marion Glorioso said.

“And I think that that it is unique to have a show written for men, about men, and the plot is driven about male relationships and camaraderie. Things that are unique about the play are also unique about St. Mark’s and so there are some parallels there.”

UPPER SCHOOL BAND PERFORMS LAST CONCERT The Upper School band just performed their last concert of the year April 7 at 7 p.m. in Decherd Auditorium.

“I was really excited for the concert because we could sort of show off everything

we’ve been working on this year,” junior Kannan Sharma said.

“For jazz band, we had some interesting charts from fast Latin songs to slow jazz ones. [We also played] marches and songs like ‘Amazing Grace’. We’ve been working really hard, I think the concert went really well.”

FOURTH-GRADE JOURNEYS TO SKY RANCH Yesterday, the Class of 2025 journeyed to Van, Texas for the annual Fourth Grade Sky Ranch Trip.

Along with parent and faculty chaperones including Lower School Counselor Gabby Reed and Lower School instructors Debra Mettere, Lynn Terman and Janet Wadkins, the fourth-graders will spent the day bouncing on trampolines, competing in team building exercises and speeding down waterslides and zip lines.

“I enjoy spending time at Sky Ranch with my classmates,” fourth-grader Henry Estes said. “It is really fun to get to go on a trip towards the end of the school year.”

The accomplishment I’m proudest of is actually being the first African American being elected to be Senior Class president at St. Mark’s School of Texas in the year 1999.

It would be a very thin crust. I help my dad at the restaurant, so I’m very particular on how the pizza is prepared.

DADYO HOLDS MEETING ON CAMPUS Dallas Area Diverse Youth Organization (DADYO) club met with schools across Dallas on campus March 22.

The meeting focused on current events related to diversity issues around the country.

DADYO club secretary Sahitya Senapathy believes the meeting was very productive.

“It was an open forum,” Senapathy said. “We discussed many issues such as transgender rights, discrimination in the movie industry and heritage month. Ideas and opinions were exchanged and discussed in a very civil manner.”

t’s their highlight of the year.

More than 150 students and faculty members load up, tossing their bags with care onto the charter bus, preparing for the weekend ahead.

The culmination of a whole year of hard work, hours spent at late night practices and summer camps, countless strings broken and plays run -- it’s time to showcase to the 89 other schools making the journey the skills what they’ve put their strongest efforts into.

This group of artists, instructors and performers are embarking toward the pinnacle of Texas and Oklahoma private school fine arts education and performance: the Independent School Association of the Southwest (ISAS) arts festival.

Junior Sammy Sanchez, a student of the film program who participated in his second ISAS arts festival this year, views the festival as the congregation of eager creatives from different art forms and principles.

“It was just really creative people coming together all in one place,” Sanchez said. “They all want to have experiences and do something different while they’re out there, and from a creative standpoint it’s really inspiring.”

For this year’s festival, Sanchez brought three of his films: Trump’d, Trump’d 2, and Laurence. Sanchez says one of the most important and worthwhile parts of the festival is the ability to get criticism and suggestions from both peers and industry professionals.

“They have people from the industry to do portfolio reviews,” Sanchez said. “The feedback is not always positive, but it’s always constructive and good to look at when you’re making new stuff. It’s also just cool to be able to show it off to other people.”

spend a big chunk of their time creating films with classmates, but, according to Sanchez, the ISAS arts festival provides an outlet for observing how students from other schools approach the lens.

“Before going to ISAS,” Sanchez said, “I had only seen student films from St. Mark’s. A lot of other schools have a different approach to film, and it often times comes out completely different, and going to ISAS allows us to gather those different perspectives.”

For junior exchange student Juan Montabes, ISAS is more than just an opportunity to show off the fruits of his artistic labors, for his school in Madrid, Spain, didn’t even have an arts program or department. hat started for Montabes as doodles in the margins of textbooks and notebook paper has grown into an active and dedicated participation in art instructor Max Wood’s drawing and painting class.

“Back home, I had to hone my drawing and painting skills outside of school,” Montabes said, “but now, I can bring the artwork we have on display in Nearburg [Hall], my abstract painting and my symbolism work.”

Although he has always sought out opportunities to surround himself with art, Montabes has never before had the chance to envelop himself in the work of other artists his age, a chance given to him by the school’s participation in ISAS. “I’ve always liked going to museums,” he said, “but I have never been to an exposition where people my age put their artwork on display, and where I get the opportunity to display my artwork.”

He both enjoyed the festival with his classmates and further developed his skills and abilities as an artist, having fun at the same time as taking inspiration from the workshops and showcases held at the festival.

“ISAS gave me more perspective,” Montabes said. “I got to view other people’s artwork that’s different than

mine. I was influenced by them, by their techniques and ideas and approaches to art. It felt good to finally showcase my work.”

For senior Christian McClain, a student in the wood and metal program, the 2017 ISAS arts festival marked the last time he will be able to participate in such a long-standing tradition — a surreal and meaningful realization for McClain.

“It’s meaningful because I’ve been in the industrial arts program since 5th grade, so it’s coming to an end,” McClain said. “It was the culmination of all my works and projects, and I just sat back at ISAS and just went “woah, alright, it’s time for all these other kids to go through this process.”

McClain sees the experiences had at the ISAS arts festival as more than just an educational experience, but also as an opportunity for the members of the wood and metal program and other programs to strengthen their interdisciplinary bond.

“You spend the time together,” McClain said. “You bond with all the guys because you spend 48 hours with the same guys and see art and everything.

You get to see other people do what they love. The feeling is different afterwards.

You say, ‘I’ve seen so many things, how do I put them into my new stuff.’ It gets you more excited to try new things in your work.” n addition to the various art-focused workshops, students that attend the festival can also participate in classes and events that lie outside of their comfort zone, like, in the case of Sanchez, a Latin dance class and, in the case of McClain, an impromptu rock concert.

“One [memory] that really stands out is that one night,” McClain said, “a group of kids were playing music in a big tent, playing rock music, and everyone was going nuts. We had [senior] Hyer Thomas crowd surf.”

program, Marion Glorioso appreciates all aspects of the festival from multiple perspectives — that of the Department Head showcasing the school’s program and that of the drama instructor working to better the dynamic and inspiration of her classes and productions.

“It is just amazing,” she said. “It is so exciting to be on a different campus, and to see their facilities, but there are also 3,000 students from other schools, and for those students to be artists in IT MEANS their own right, be it A LOT TO REPRESENT visual, performing, etc., the excitement OUR behind the festival is SCHOOL AND SHOW amazing.”

As part of the ALL THE festival, members GOOD WORK of the school’s WE DO.— drama program MARION perform individual GLORIOSO monologues and a one-act play for audiences comprised of students and teachers. This year, the students put on the play “Death” by Woody Allen, with senior Leo Weiser as the lead. These performances were some of the highlights of the weekend for Glorioso.

For Glorioso — and all the students she takes to the arts festival – ISAS represents much more than just a two-day break from school.

For them, ISAS is an opportunity to showcase the fine arts program as a whole, to showcase what they’ve spent countless hours, both on campus and at home, preparing for. And that alone makes it all the more better.

“To represent our school and how important the fine arts are to St. Mark’s and how integral they are to the fabric of this school,” Glorioso said, “and getting the opportunity to showcase all of it as a whole, is a great honor. This is our package, this is St. Mark’s fine arts as a whole, and how we do it, and how well we do it, and we get to bring it and showcase it.”

A legacy of leadership THE LOWER SCHOOLERS SEE IT EVERYDAY — THE LEADERSHIP WALL STARTED NINE YEARS AGO AND CONTINUES TO EVOLVE TO THIS DAY.

lluminated by the spotlight in Decherd Auditorium, fourth-grader Andrew Jin, third-grader Joshua Goforth, second-grader Mac Saye and first-grader Rayhaan Rizvon stood before 146 Lower Schoolers.

Behind them, a PowerPoint presentation with photos of a young woman.

After weeks of research and preparation, the boys prepared to present on one inspiring leader– one who at the young age of 11-years-old began chronicling the horrors of the Taliban.

One who at the young age of 14-years-old survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in her hometown of Mingora, Pakistan and then went on to change the lives of hundreds of young women and children in her native region.

One who at the young age of 17-years-old became the youngest person to ever be named recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

As the crowd’s chatter died down, Jin took a deep breath and began the presentation, introducing the newest addition to the Lower School Leadership Wall -- Malala Yousafzai.

The idea for the Leadership Wall began when Lower School head Sherri Darver received a letter in the mail in the summer of 2008. To receive the letter, Darver needed the signature of then-Lower School head Barbara York.

Much to their surprise, the letter came with a large package too.

“We expected it to be a small picture,” Darver said, “but as you see out there [in the Lower School entrance], it’s a very large picture.”

At a time when the school as a whole began to stress the importance of leadership and ethics, York seized the opportunity to put the portrait to use, utilizing it to teach the Lower Schoolers about some of history’s strongest leaders.

“I think [York] probably saw it and realized this is a great opportunity to

begin discussing why George Washington was a strong leader and what other strong leaders looked like,” Darver said.

As a result, the portrait of George Washington led to the creation of the iconic Lower School Leadership Wall, which greets visitors when they enter the Lower School from the Lower School Circle.

The wall now includes ten distinguished leaders, each one selected by students annually.

“It was entirely [York’s] idea to begin to introduce a leader each year for the Lower School boys to center in what characteristics make a strong leader.”

Within the past month, a new name has debuted on the wall – the Pakistani education, women’s and children’s rights activist, Malala.

“This year, we wanted someone who made a difference as a leader as a young person,” Darver said. “Malala was 11-years-old when she made the difference. That’s why she was chosen this year as the leader for the Leadership Wall.” uring the selection process, teachers encourage parents to have discussions with their sons at home about what makes a strong and positive leader.

“From those parent conversations at dinner, either the parents give us nominations of the leaders they talked about,” Darver said, “or the boys will come in and tell their homeroom teacher. From that, they have a list of people that [the boys] would talk about. They would then send me that list of people they have nominated throughout the whole

Once the students have drafted the lists, faculty members discussed the options and narrowed down the shortlist to determine the candidate who would “best compliment the leadership already represented on the wall,” according to Darver.

When choosing nominees for the Leadership Wall, Darver believes it is important to strive for cultural diversity as well as diversity across different fields of work.

As this tradition continues, Darver is not sure what the school will do as the Wall runs out of space, but she hopes that the message and the values that the wall teaches will never go away.

“It doesn’t have to be a tangible wall of pictures,” Darver said. “[Lower School boys] can still learn about strong leaders [without the wall], and they will.”

t’s no wonder why Google and its products are free.

With the top search engine in the world, Google Docs, Gmail, Google Drive and many others, the company offers a gold mine of useful features to compliment the search bar — all are infinitely scalable. And they’re all free.

But there is one hidden cost that comes with all the applications. But it’s not a type of cost that will break the bank or max out your credit card.

The price is your privacy.

But Google isn’t the only company that does this.

Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat — all free — all record everything you type or send on their sites or apps.

And most of the time, it’s not all that well advertised that they are doing it.

Having spent 30 years in the cybersecurity industry as a tech privacy advocate, Bill Lowry, Vice President of Products at Server Central and father of Creed Lowry ’14, believes that there’s no real privacy on the Internet.

And he says the majority of users don’t know that.

when you’re signing up to these services is that they all come with terms,” Lowry said. “Every time you click ‘accept’ on any website that you use, there are literal terms and conditions that are written out somewhere that back that up… So in exchange for this free, scalable, infinite service, you give away the privacy and the rights to protect and keep this information secret.”

According to Lowry, the terms and conditions of Internet companies like Google allow for a user’s information to be taken, stored and transferred.

And by using their services, you give away your rights to protect and keep the information secret.

“Most people just want the convenience of using the free service from Google,” Lowry said. “But now what happens is the terms and conditions you accept when you start to use the free Google products include language that states that they can take your information and use it any way they want to.”

But where does this information go, and how is it used?

Although this information is often anonymized, Lowry says what remains is the user’s age and interactions to people and posts on the web. nd according to Jay Johnson, a cybersecurity lawyer at Jones Day and former federal prosecutor, many online companies are, at their base, simply data collection companies.

“A lot of online companies and a lot of media companies are at their core data companies now,” Johnson said.

“That’s how they monetize the service that they’re providing.”

Johnson also says that consumers have to make a choice between privacy and convenience, and too often, convenience wins out.

“When you bring it all the way back to a consumer level, quite frankly consumers have a decision to make at the outset,” Johnson said. “Routinely you can ask an audience how many of you have a grocery store rewards card, and I’ve never asked the question and received less than about an 80 to 75 per-

As thousands of users protest Facebook’s terms and conditions that allow the company to use anything uploaded to the site — even deleted profiles — the company updates their policies in the heat of controversy.

Although Tholking cautions against the dangers of the Internet, he believes it can be utilized to users’ advantage — if they choose to exercise a little caution while online.

“Most people put out more information than they know on social media,” Tholking said. “If they don’t want it getting out, don’t go online, don’t buy online.

ini Marque co-editor Charlie Rubarth sat on his bed, focusing intently on his Overwatch game. It appeared as if nothing could interrupt his concentration.

Something did. His phone buzzed.

He fumbled around for it on his bed, and his fingers finally closed around the device.

He held his phone up to his face, the screen lighting up his face in the dark room.

A single message from adviser Meagan Frazier sat in the middle of the screen.

“Gold Crown, boys! Congratulations!”

Mini Marque- co-editor Sam Ahmed was surprised when the Mini Marque won the award.

“The year before we only won an award with the fonts that we chose,” Ahmed said, “so I went into this not expecting anything out of it, just making the best magazine we could.”

For Rubarth, a particularly tough part of the magazine was coming up with a theme to tie everything together.

“I really wanted to do something with Greece since I’m Greek,” Rubarth said, “and I really like Greek mythology. I had a few ideas though, one was jazz or music. We ended up deciding on doing like, Roman and other civilizations. We ended with four different sections: Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia and America.”

Marque Editor Killian Green believes the Mini-Marque, which was among three other school publications to receive a Gold Crown, is heading in the right direction. He is excited to have such talented writers and designers

coming up the pipeline.

“I’ve tried to kind of push the boundaries of what the Marque is and what the Marque covers besides a literary showcase,” Green said. “I think with the creativity that they have, and they’re track record thus far, they’re going to do some really creative and innovative stuff.”

Green believes the award was well deserved, as was the Mini Marque’s place as one of only two Middle School publications in the nation to win a Gold Crown.

“They obviously have one of the best Middle School literary magazines in the country,” Green said, “so I’m really excited for them.”

Frazier believes the Mini Marque forces kids to learn to be part of a team and work within a group.

“It’s the largest group project you can possibly think of,” Frazier said, “and if you think about everything that everybody hates about working in a group, this project tests it and you really have

to rely on other people.”

Frazier believes receiving the Gold Crown really helps distinguish the Middle School experience.

She feels it really helps validate all of the hard work and effort that students put on during the year.

“The design guys spend an afternoon every single week, if they are consistently working after school,” Frazier said. “They’re not getting any sort of credit for this. The award is their credit and all of the late nights and dinners and things that they put into this, that’s what they get out of it.”

Rubarth has learned some valuable leadership skills along the way.

“I learned how to command a team or unit,” Rubarth said “and I’ve learned how to encourage people to do the best work they can.”

Ahmed gained a lot of insight from his time as co-editor.

“The staff is the most important part,” Ahmed said, “if we didn’t have the amount of committed and talented people that we had on staff, then none of this could have happened.”

Rubarth is incredibly proud of his Mini-Marque staff members for putting together the award-winning magazine, and he believes that their future is bright and looks forward to continued success in the next year.

“The seventh graders that were with us last year under me and Sam,” Rubarth said, “definitely have the motivation and the tenacity to take it on and get another Gold Crown next year.”

REMARKER Led by Editor-in-chief Philip Smart ‘16, the ReMarker newspaper won its fourteenth consecutive Gold Crown, the longest winning streak in CSPA history.

MARKSMEN The Marksmen yearbook won its seventh CSPA Silver Crown, under the leadership of Editor-inchief Will Diamond ‘16.

School to host and compete in photography event for the 11th year

by Duncan Kirstein he Association of Texas Photography Instructors (ATPI) will be hosted by the school April 29, and the photography program will once again compete for the ATPI Top Program Award.

After winning the award ten years in a row, photography instructor Scott Hunt was reluctant to enter once again.

“My thought was to avoid any sense of impropriety,” Hunt said. “We would simply choose not to enter this year and basically just help support the organization and support the contest.”

Hunt, however, faced pushback from ATPI. He was told the photography program could host on the condition that they participated in the competition.

ray, told us he doesn’t want us to stop competing,” Hunt said, “and he wants other schools to wrestle the award away from us. He does not want us to stop.”

Hunt entered in order to host the event, as he wishes to give back to ATPI. He also believes that while the contest is a big responsibility, the school is suited to support it.

“The organization’s been very supportive of me,” Hunt said, “and it’s been exceedingly supportive of photographic education throughout the state and the nation. I’ve been able to support in some ways in years past but not to the degree I would like.”

While Hunt does not believe a win is guaranteed, but he believes that there is pressure on the class to win.

“There’s pressure,” Hunt said, “and

every group of kids, particularly the senior class, doesn’t wanna be the group of kids that didn’t win. I don’t know if that’s healthy, but i can’t stop it.”

Because of this pressure, Hunt believes that a win would be good for the students.

“It’s satisfying to know that all their efforts and all their

time spent in the class has paid off and resulted in work that is noteworthy,” Hunt said.

hey couldn’t be more different.

One is blond and has a vaguely familiar boy-nextdoor look, while the other is thin and rocks a wild, curly hairstyle.

One of them is a guitarist and vocalist. The other, a pianist.

One of them honed their skills in Blues Club, while the other used Guitar Hero to practice his craft.

Both of them, however, share a common foundation for their love of music, a common beginning of their respective bands. They both found their passion for music here as Marksmen, and now, they’ve extended that same love to form their own bands in college.

Will Clark ’16 and Cole Gerthoffer ’14 are both using their musical talents to the fullest as they embark on two separate journeys down the musical path.

Clark first cultivated his love for music performing at the school in Blues Club.

“The Blues Club got me started more than anything,” Clark said. “I remember walking in the first day of Blues Club and not knowing what a twelve-bar blues was. Just through playing with them for years taught me more than anything how to improvise, how to perform, how to work with other musicians.”

have us play on a radio show or play again somewhere. erthoffer, on the other hand, dove into his musical career as a keyboardist ten years ago.

But rather than just becoming a master of the classics, he got his first Guitar Hero videogame when he was middle school, and Guitar Hero’s music awoke his passion for rock.

“I have always loved listening to music,” Gerthoffer said. “When I was in Middle School I loved playing Guitar Hero, and it was something so special about being in touch with music you listen to that made me want to create it myself.”

As fate would have it, Gerthoffer became friends with two rock guitarists, Jorge Hinojosa ’13 and Dominic Garcia ’13, “Once I saw them playing together I saw that we all were uniquely passionate about the same type of music that I liked,” Gerthoffer said. “That’s really the reason the band has stuck around, because we love music and love playing together.”

In his freshman year, Gerthoffer joined Hinojosa and Garcia’s band, Athens — he never looked back, for the band was as harmonious as their instrumental parts were.

In 2014, they renamed the band Bronco Simmons.

Like the Jibs, the band has had its share of success. They recently performed at SXSW, have released five

came down to fate and pure luck.

“I went to the Sailing Club in the first week of school, and saw these few kids there,” Clark said. “I just walked up to them and said ‘hey, do y’all play music by any chance?’ and they were like ‘yeah we do,’ and from that point on never went back to Sailing Club and just started being a band.”

The band, the Jibs, had an odd beginning which made name-choosing an easy task.

“That’s how the three of us found each other, and that’s actually how the name got started too,” Clark said. “A jib is a type of sail, and we met at the sailing club. It’s pretty lame.”

The Jibs’ hard work and dedication has resulted in the release of their first EP, which came out March 25.

“I’m pretty happy with the record,” Clark said. “It’s been difficult promoting it though. There is a lot of extra stuff around just recording the music, like as in really making an EP.” One of the Jibs’ most impressive accomplishments was getting to play at South by Southwest, a music and film festival in Austin, Texas.

“It was a lot of fun,” Clark said. “We also got a lot of good connections, like we got people saying they wanted to

tracks in their Younger Days EP and have a sizable Soundcloud and Spotify following.

The band’s successes, however, haven’t come easy.

“The biggest obstacle any musician faces is just getting people to care,” Gerthoffer said. “Making music should be for yourself, but once you start wanting other people to listen to it and hear it, the biggest obstacle is to actually get people to care about your music.”

Gerthoffer attributes the band’s success to the school, saying that it provided a place for the band members to grow a deep friendship.

“I will say that St. Mark’s allowed us to meet each other and become friends, which is the most important part of this band,” Gerthoffer said. “Being able to see and play music on a daily basis with them was absolutely invaluable. It’s the key for us to become real musicians.”

••• Music has become an integral part of these two men’s lives, and it’s one thing they will not be giving up for a long time.

“I definitely think that this past year has made me realize how much I want to pursue music, and how I kind of have to do music, or my soul will be crushed essentially,” Clark said. “Like if I’m not playing music, I feel bad. It’s almost like withdrawal. Maybe that will change, but right now I just have to keep doing it. It’s fun, and I don’t see any reason to stop doing it in the near future.”

Final Coffeehouse ends a year of success

PRINTING ART Posing in front his most basic to his most creative works, Naseck shows off some of his best pieces he’s created using the 3D printer.

J

unior Perry Naseck is printing a strange, uncommon and funny-looking “essay.”

The paper he’s printing the “essay” on is made of plastic, and the only thing written on the essay is a series of seemingly random lines and curves.

But as the plastic bends, folds and slowly takes shape, the lines and curves suddenly spring up from the plastic, bending inwards to form a pear-shaped figure with a hole at the top.

It’s clear that Naseck isn’t printing just any regular English essay.

He’s 3D printing an entire vase from a sequence of binary he fed into a computer. And the vase isn’t even close to the most interesting thing he’s made in the past year.

••• Naseck’s initial experience with 3D printing was during his freshman year in robotics with the MakerBot, the school’s first 3D printer. However, the printer’s restrictions caused many frustrating moments, despite attempts to fix it.

“It’s broken probably every other time we’ve used it,” Naseck said. “The first time it didn’t have the proper protection, so when you moved the motors manually it generated electricity back into itself and fried the components of the motors.”

As a result, sophomore William Haga decided to bring to school his own 3D printer, The Da Vinci.

That’s when Naseck delved into 3D printing and learned by trial and error.

“I spent a long time experimenting what causes The Da Vinci to come out better or worse,” Naseck said, “and I think I’ve kind of surpassed everyone with the amount of time I’ve spent on it.

For a while, I was printing one or two things a day.”

Naseck’s first piece was a gear for a robotics competition in 2016. Since that year, robotics competitions have started to allow 3D printed materials.

ing find a way to attach LED lights to the ceiling of his classroom.

“Mr. Tholking bought LED lights to put on his drop ceiling of his classroom and the adhesive on it didn’t really work,” Naseck said, “so I made these little clips that stick on the drop ceiling and hold the lights in place.”

This piece set Naseck up for his next design and what he is most proud of: a guitar pick pen that junior Sunny Agrawal had requested.

“We designed it from scratch and went through ten revisions of it,” Naseck said. “We built on it every time. The first time it was real simple, it was just a cylinder. And then we added different dimensions, we added parts to it. Sunny wanted to mass produce it and sell it.”

Unlike his other pieces where Naseck knew the exact design specifications, one of the hard parts of making this piece was finding the right dimensions.

“So back and forth Sunny and I were just giving each other dimensions trying it out,” Naseck said. “For the pick pen you’re using it to strum a guitar so you don’t know how well it will work until you use it, so that took a while.” hile working together with Agrawal on the project, Naseck also started teaching him how to use the 3D printer, as the 3D printer is open for everyone to use.

“I don’t believe that I should just be the sole proprietor and [the only one who knows] how to use it,” Naseck said.

“I think it’s good that everyone knows how to use [the] technology. I’d say talk to me if you want to use it.”

Although Naseck does design most of his works, there is also a 3D printing website in which artists post their pieces for anyone to print.

“There’s a website called thingiverse, where people make designs and put them online,” Naseck said.

Naseck’s next projects in mind are a 3D printed “Path to Manhood” statue, depicting that which fronts Centennial

Hall, and fossil craniums. Though the “Path to Manhood” statue is more of a personal project, the fossil craniums are more directed to an educational purpose.

“The person that visited the STEM conference a few weeks ago handed out these little 3D printed skulls,” Naseck said. “I want to be able to print full size ones. The ones that [McDermott Master Teacher John] Mead has are molds, and are way too expensive and fragile to pass around the classroom, but these you can pass around and nothing is going to happen to them.”

I read an article that people were taking this to third world countries like Haiti after disasters and printing water filters. You can get very high end printers, portable printers or easy to use printers, depending on what you’re looking for.”

••• Overall, Naseck feels a sense of accomplishment about his ability to mold 3D models out of mere plastic — and how his work impacts people inside and beyond his community.

“I have greatly augmented my understanding and ability to work with 3D models,” Naseck said. “Most of what I print is for other people, and I am grateful to be able to provide this service to members of the St. Mark’s community, as well as teach others how to print.”

his year’s last Coffeehouse, themed “Waffle House,” took place April 1.

According to Fine Arts Board Chair Shailen Parmar, April 1 was the most anticipated Coffeehouse yet.

“This Coffeehouse is unique because it’s the last one for all the seniors,” Parmar said, “so we put in a lot of work to make sure the lineup was very diverse and interesting,” Parmar said.

One of the pitfalls that a lot of these Coffeehouses have are that many shows are similar to acts in previous Coffeehouses, which could be a little repetitive, according to Parmar.

“So this Coffeehouse offers two stand-up comedy routines, a magic show and a lot more. And it’s definitely going to be a more interesting show than most of the coffeehouses that I’ve been to in my time in the Upper School,” Parmar said.

Parmar intended for the Coffeehouse, which also took place on April Fool’s Day, to be filled with hilarity.

In this last show, Parmar hoped to target audiences who haven’t yet taken a particular interest in Coffeehouse and to leave a legacy of enjoyable Coffeehouses.

“So this year has been the most attended Coffeehouses of any of the years, we’ve had much greater numbers,” Parmar said. “Our target audience is mainly guys who don’t think Coffeehouse will be interesting, and we want for those guys to go to a show and realize that they can enjoy it. I think we did a lot of that this year and for this show. As for the coming years, we hope more and more people will attend.” unior Davis Bailey performed the magic trick, a performance that he considers a valuable experience for him.

“It’s my first time performing,” Bailey said. “It was a completely different experience to perform on that side of the stage.”

So far, Parmar has considered the year’s shows as successes, even though there were some rough times.

“For example, ‘History House’ was a miracle show,” Parmar said.

“It was our first one, we didn’t know what to do, and in the end, Will Clark [’16], who just happened to be in town, and Umer Nadir [’14], provided me with everything and just saved our Coffeehouse.”

Looking back, Parmar’s experience on the Fine Arts Board has been as pleasant as his Coffeehouses were.

“There are freshmen who see me as the kind of people I saw the seniors when I was a freshman, and that’s kind of amazing,” Parmar said. “It’s just the fact that I’m in that position is so powerful, and I really enjoy inspiring freshmen to take up Coffeehouse and improve it further because I see a lot of potential in Coffeehouse.”

The co-chairs of the Fine Arts Board for next year are juniors Niteesh Vemuri, Kannan Sharma and Sammy Sanchez, announced at this final Coffeehouse.

s the late Chuck Berry sang, “Roll over Beethoven, and dig these rhythm and blues.”

Back in 1956, these lines at the end of one of Berry’s first songs “Roll Over Beethoven” represented a defiant rebellion against the previous generation’s “more dignified” musical establishment.

In 1956, this song, and many others by Berry and his contemporaries, represented the birth of youth culture that would come to make up the largest demographic of music buyers.

In 1956, Chuck Berry represented the birth of rock and roll.

Many of Chuck Berry’s songs featured raucous guitar licks, jumpy and bumpy basslines, steady drum grooves and that smooth voice known to belong to none other than Berry.

His skipping movements while performing separated him from the rest of the early rock and roll performers, and it became his trademark.

According to physics instructor — and blues and rock and roll enthusiast — Stephen Houpt, “No one else moved like him at the time. He set the standard for performers then and now.”

However, behind the sterling suits, the gleaming guitars and the revolutionary rhythms lay the epicenter of Chuck Berry’s impact on the music industry: his sound.

His sound was so groundbreaking, so unconventional, so essential — its influence inspired many of the mainstay rock acts of the 60’s, 70’s and even the 80’s.

Upon his death at the age of 90 on March 18, 2017, Rolling Stones lead singer and performer Mick Jagger spoke out in memory of Berry, stating his “music is ingrained inside [The Rolling Stones] forever.” The Stones were monumental in the progression of rock music, but Chuck Berry was their foundation.

When you hear rock music today, it may not have the same core sound, but without Chuck Berry and his contemporaries, the genre would be completely different, possibly nonexistent.

If there were no Chuck Berry, there would be no Beatles (they covered many of his songs), no Elvis Presley, and simply no rock and roll.

So, as Marty McFly said to the crowd of the past generation’s high school students after performing one of Chuck Berry’s songs, “You may not like it, but your kids are gonna love it.”

And that they did.

nspired by the era’s thriving rave scene, Daft Punk was formed in 1993

by French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo and Thomas Bangalter.

Four years later, they released their first album, the raw, rough Homework, which brought them success both in their native France and put them on the map in the American music scene, where their songs, including “Da Funk,” “Around the World,” “Short Circuit” and especially their magnum opus “Alive 2007”, have served as soundtracks for thousands, if not millions, of fond memories.

They’ve also garnered cross-genre recognition — their team up with Kanye West on “Stronger” has remained on my playlist for as long as I’ve had a phone.

While Daft Punk did not invent the EDM genre, they are undoubtedly the ones that perfected it.

What are the keys to Daft Punk’s success? Brilliant marketing, no hints at live performances making people desperate to see them live, dropping hit singles between their albums and ambiguity of the masked members themselves.

Daft Punk are pioneers in the electronic scene—few artists have the ability to blend music, atmosphere, attitude and image like Daft Punk. It’s alluring, even to people who don’t usually enjoy electronic music.

electronic innovators modern EDM are still present in Daft Punk’s music, but the duo have managed to invent their own personal style, a constantly rewarding intuitive feel you engage with instead of a single moment that everything builds to.

It creates a strange, pulsing electricity that flows through all their music, burying itself into the listeners brain like an incredibly persistent worm.

Daft Punk continues to grow and innovate. Part of the reason their fourth and newest album, Random Access Memories, is so successful is its use of live instrumentalists and top session players on traditional instruments that play off each other. hese elements enhance the overall vibe of the music itself and in the process delivers much more feel and pure unadulterated energy than any machine ever could.

As with many hip hop producers, Daft Punk have previously found their groove by sampling old funk, soul, disco etc. They even arranged the (excellent, by the way) soundtrack of Tron: Legacy, single (or double) handedly turning a mediocre movie into an actually kind of decent movie.

While they may be best known for 2014’s “Get Lucky”, Thomas and Guy-Manuel are so much more than that. If EDM’s your thing—heck, if mu-

hances are you’ve heard James Brown before, whether you’ve listened to one of his songs or not.

He’s the most sampled artist ever, with his funky rhythms ending up on endless rap classics and used by the likes of Kanye West, Nas, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z and pretty much any great rapper you can think of. So when I asked three different classmates who James Brown was and got the similar blank face and slight head-shake and shoulder shrug from all three, I knew I had to write something.

What made Brown different was his tossing aside of the traditional structure of a song in the verse hook verse style for the essence of music: rhythm.

The song where this really all changed was on “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” (1965), which laid the foundation for rap and rhyming today, and earned him the title of Grandfather of Soul. rown also pioneered the “call and response” chorus that energized crowds and remains a mainstay in hip-hop today.

But the only thing more electrifying than James Brown’s music in the 60s and 70s was seeing him live. It was said he lost about seven pounds of sweat each night when he performed due to his gymnastic stage antics and frenzied passion with which he performed.

This “rockstar” stage presence has become a huge part of hip-hop culture today, where touring and creating energetic atmospheres at shows is what really lines artist’s pockets in this streaming-driven music economy.

And his similarities to the rap world today didn’t stop onstage. Brown grew up in depression-era Augusta, Georgia, coming from a similar life of poverty that motivates a majority of the stars in hip-hop today.

And he served time in a juvenile detention center for armed robbery when he was 16, which, unfortunately, also draws an unhappy parallel to the rap world.

Through his unconventional singing style, stage antics and rhythm, James Brown has survived not only as an inspiration or leader, but, fittingly, as the soul of hip-hop culture.

s I pulled up to South Side Ballroom for Detroit rapper Big Sean’s second stop on his “I Decided.” tour three hours early, I expected to have a good spot in line for a decent view in the standing room only venue.

Oh, how I was wrong.

There were hundreds of people in line ahead of me, some of who had been waiting all day for the concert.

That was when I knew that I was only one of many in a sea of fans who had very high expectations for Big Sean’s performance.

By the time 8 p.m. rolled around, Big Sean’s opening act, MadeinTYO, took the stage. He started off on a strong note, quickly gaining audience investment. That participation slowly died down as his performance went on. Nevertheless, by the end he hyped up the crowd to prepare them for Big Sean.

As soon as Big Sean was in sight, the fog went off, the lights flashed and the crowd went crazy.

The whole time he had the full attention of his audience as he perfectly mixed his older, more famous songs with music from his new album, I Decided.

The bass at this concert was turned up so high I could feel it reverberating through my lungs to the point where it was hard to breathe.

Along with sharing his music with his fans, Big Sean gave the audience an entirely different experience through simply talking to the crowd. He first spoke about his love for the Lone Star State and said that it was his decision to start off the tour in Texas. He also gave life advice to the crowd, sharing moments and getting personal in a way few artists would do.

The combination of Big Sean’s love for the people, his outstanding music and his incredible performance added up to a stunning experience.

In terms of the performance, there was nothing more I could have asked for.

or years, the school has prided itself on its service-minded attitude and its cultivation of values that assist not only the organizations benefitting from the students’ help, but also the students themselves.

This involvement begins in Lower School with the Good Will Drive and the Book Swap, continues on throughout Middle School with events benefitting the environment like planting trees and really picks up steam in Upper School with opportunities every weekend to do community service.

It is required by the school that each Upper School student complete a minimum of 15 hours of service each school year, doing at least five hours worth each trimester.

Many students take it upon themselves to go above and beyond this requirement, as there are many students each year who earn the Presidential Award, which signifies completing more than 100 hours of community service over the year.

however, students have been allowed to earn hours in a new way: by partaking in fund-raising dinners where their only “work” is writing checks for the meal, of which only a percentage will go to charity.

As many as three hours have been awarded to students who simply arrive at the event, write their name down and eat food.

Too many students are taking advantage of these events and using them as their main source of community service hours. This should not be the case. ertainly, these dinners are valuable in that they may raise awareness for a particular charity, but we do not think they should be offered as a substitute for doing legitimate work in the various community service projects such as Gooch Elementary tutoring and Rays of Light.

Students should not be allowed to rely on quick and simple events that require no skill or participation to meet the required amount of community service hours. In con-

The school provides us with multiple opportunities to get involved with organizations and charities through x2VOL website, and the Community Service Board consistently updates the website with new opportunities.

There are more than 15 opportunities on the website every week, and many of them are weekly recurring projects with organizations, so there is no reason for students to have to rely on a simple dinner to obtain hours.

While these dinners do help organizations and charities, we do not think students should be allowed to use them to meet their requirements. We urge the community service board to rethink the requirements students must meet to complete hours and to ensure that students earn their required hours for actually serving their communities.

Unsung hero

Bring the library couches back T

he Cecil and Ida Green Library has consistently been one of the most popular places on campus to study, get work done, or simply relax and read a book or magazine. With the renovation of the library which included new tables, chairs, bean bags, couches, amd other commodities, the number of different study spaces has increased dramatically.

However, the student favorite of these are the couches at the back of the library. Providing a good balance between relaxing and working, the couches are the perfect break from the busy day. Allowing students to recharge during lunch or a

free period, the couches are a necessity to the library.

Yet, there’s just one problem — the couches are no longer there, due to a vandalization of the couches and an increased noise level that has gotten to be too much.

While we understand that the noise levels can cause issues at times, we doubt removing the couches will seriously improve the noise level. If anything, the removal of the couches, which in turn provides less space to study, could create a bigger noise issue from all the bickering over limited study spaces because we now have fewer places to study.

Junior Class Nerf war Hats off to the Junior Class officers for organizing a gradewide nerf war and pizza party in Spencer Gym enjoyed by two thirds of the class, including faculty appearances from Headmaster David Dini, History Department Chair Fisher and Head of Upper School Patrick Andrén.

After switching to an online voting format for executive Student Council elections, we were surprised to see a smaller amount of voter turnout than usual, especially given the easy access to ballots.

T

his month, the editorial board recognizes Director of Environmental Studies Dan Northcut for all of his contributions to the school.

Apart from carrying an infectiously positive and funny attitude around school with him everyday, Northcut cleans out the fish tanks in the McDermott Math and Science Quadrangle and feeds the fish living in them every day.

Not only does he do this, but he also spearheads the steps the school takes towards being more environmentally-friendly, such as leading the e-waste recycling drive, in which Northcut collects any old electronic devices from students — phones, computers, consoles, any electronic that can be recycled goes to him for proper handling during the drive.

We sincerely appreciate the work that Northcut puts in everyday outside of teaching classes, keeping the fish tanks top-quality for students to observe and enjoy the various species present.

Student section revival After a lackluster turnout for much of the fall, there has been great turnout for Lions spring sports. Let’s keep it up and push our teams towards SPC glory!

Waffle House After a shaky January edition, Waffle House helped complete the turnaround and helped end the year on a creative and magical note. May the pancake vs. waffle debate continue.

Senior skip day The yearly day of absence of the seniors was a great success this year, allowing the Senior Class to take a day off to relax, culminating in a class trip to the Stars game, in which the Stars won, 1-0.

Classes during ISAS While the festival is great for the students who attend, the students who do not are stuck in class, mostly with less than half of the people who are usually there with them. This leaves the classes pointless, as there are not enough people there to be productive.

And my answer is simply, Frank. I am Frank.

He loved football and I wouldn’t even watch the game on TV. He always

The men in the mirror played outside when he came home from Lamplighter, and I always went straight to my room. He got up early and I slept in late. Eventually it came down to my fourth-grade defiance when I gathered my limited belongings and tramped to our third floor attic, where I positioned two bean bags under my indoor sleeping bag and lived for a week.

My parents finally realized I was serious. They helped me move my mattress, nightstand and bookshelf to the attic, creating my own room among dusty lamps, old family photos and unused furniture.

But most importantly, I was away from my brother. I lived in the hot, old attic, away from my bathroom and closet for about a year, puffing out my little chest, showing my parents that I was confident in my independence, confident in letting my brother live in

his room without his best friend.

Eventually, my parents forced me to move back downstairs, into a storage closet connecting to our closet.

This compressed my bedroom floor space into a 7x12 feet rectangle, with only a navy sheet hanging from the ceiling separating me from my parents’ old china and my own baby clothes.

We were closer, but not too close.

As I continued to distance myself from my own twin and family, they expanded my room, moving all the storage into the 3rd floor attic, allowing me to further my independence. To further my separation from the family. e couldn’t be more different and trapped. Trapped in identical bodies, sharing appearances that rudely disguise our mirror personalities.

My brother and I are “mirror twins.”

Hyer is extroverted, athletic-oriented, and a team player. I am introverted, ac-

ademically focused and independent. I am a mirror reflection, with Hyer on the opposite side, staring back at me.

He grew up left-handed and left-footed while I dominated the right side.

He grew moles on the left side of his face, and I germinated moles on my right. He parts his hair to the left, and I to the right. We couldn’t be more different.

And now, as our time “trapped” together in the same house comes to an end, I know I will miss my other half, the reflection in the mirror. While I will enjoy the freedom of being known as an individual, our mirror personalities act as two joining puzzle pieces, perfectly matched to complete the other.

Even though I will never be known as solely “Frank,” at least I have such a good other half reflecting back at me.

Ringo, St. Mark’s and man’s best friends

R

ingo mostly relaxes now. His days of catching squirrels and bolting around the backyard are behind him, but every now and then he’ll have a renaissance. You can find him in the nearest sunbeam during the day, with his head resting on his paws and tail tucked around his hind legs completing the speckled white oval of dog that he seems to be most of the time I see him.

You won’t even notice he’s there, save for the occasional deep dog sigh that seems to signify total leisure on a sunny, lazy Saturday.

But a couple days ago, as I was splayed out on the floor beside him, scritching and scratching his neck and the dome of his head as is my daily post-school CASE tradition, I noLOWRY ticed his muzzle Editor-in-chief was beginning to get sprinkled with gray hairs. So I paused, put my arm around him and just laid there for a while.

I don’t really remember life without my foxhound whippet mix of a com-

panion, and I’ve only spent 10 years with his shotgun strength bark. There’s only one other companion that’s stood by my side as long as Ringo has: St. Mark’s.

When I look back on my childhood, it’s mostly blue and gold bursts of memories that flood my brain.

Fun Day’s full of inflatable slides and trick or treat lines, Doc’s Lock In’s where senior Teddy Koudelka and I made absolutely sure to wear our Hines Ward and Ben Roethlisberger jerseys, real French toast sticks in the lunchline (yes, it’s that important to me) and sponge soaked Blue and Gold days that always ended with a pushpop grasped grubbily in sticky hands.

Both my dog and my school have fulfilled their respective reputations throughout the last 12 years of my life.

Ringo has lived up to his name’s sharply intelligent and cunningly dangerous beginnings as an outlaw in the movie Tombstone (no, he’s not named after the drummer), by terrorizing sunbeams and warm rocks throughout our backyard or patrolling our house to make sure that any time anybody accidently knocks their knee on the side of a table or bangs opens a drawer it is met with the same raucous and

ear-shattering cacophony of barks that a squadron of armed robbers would get. Intimidation is his middle name.

St. Mark’s has also earned its position as one of the top schools in the nation in my mind.

Even after it’s beat me down with a dozen math books covered with irrelevant photos of, for example, a dolphin or a violin, hundreds of deadlines and what seems like thousands of Starbucks scented nights of studying, I love to say I go here.

I’ve noticed myself saying that even more proudly of late. aybe that’s just the nostalgia talking, but every late production night trek to my car from the journalism suite seems a little sweeter.

I write this on my last one of those production nights, the night of my last breeze filled walk with only the rattling of distant maintenance workers carts and the soothing rustling of leaves playing in the wind.

And now I’m moving on.

Next year I’ll leave Ringo, no doubt curled up in a sunbeam, travel bag slung around my shoulder, with a scratch behind his ear and a hug.

And this May I’ll leave St. Mark’s in

a white tuxedo with the cigar smoke of my 91 brothers and I curling into the lazy heat of a summer night in Texas.

But I’ll be back. Back to sling my travel bag in my study during my breaks from college and dive onto the floor beside Ringo, put my arm around him and nap, back to be that perpetually smiling college student who goes from door to door on the St. Mark’s campus like a Jehovah’s Witness that has come to convince every class he visits how much the students inside should cherish that class and teacher. I’ll probably be wearing flip-flops or something and have a beard as is tradition.

And in the middle of those breaks back to Dallas, I’m sure I’ll think of both my companions.

Not all the time – it won’t consume my thoughts, but looking through a dorm room window a wave of nostalgia might hit me, and I’ll cherish the outings of fetch in the backyard or the infectious energetic spirit of the last few periods on a Friday.

And in a month or so I’ll be saying “Yeah, I went to St. Mark’s,” with the same overwhelming pride and a freshly reminiscent smile tugging at the corners of my mouth.

Of the boys, by the boys, for the boys

I

could start off with the hackneyed spiel talking about how St. Mark’s did so much for me. So I will. Because it did. But there are other things I’d like to address.

I’ve been blessed to have teachers throughout my career who cared about me and still do. And I feel even more blessed to graduate with 91 brothers who, when we put our mind to it, can band together and accomplish anything.

I’ve grown up with 26 of you all since first grade, but I’m proud to say, at this point, it’s nearly impossible to tell who started when because we are all so cohesive.

Corday Cruz I started my Senior Content career at 10600 as Editor a tiny first grader, with my voice a couple of octaves higher than it is now and my hair looking nothing like the microphone you see today.

It was a simple time. Everything the school didn’t do, my mom did, and all

I had to do was homework, soccer and play with my friends.

In Upper School, I had more than enough late nights, 13-hour school days and late returns from sports games in Fort Worth. I’ve felt the crushing disappointment of being robbed entry to the SPC championship game because of a debatable penalty.

But standing on the sidelines in Houston, just as crestfallen as the rest of my team was Mr. Dini.

Along with various coaches from the athletic department, he was the first to comfort us and laud us for our hard work.

Also, I learned what the “overinvolved” Marksman was. I myself was one at times.

I bought into the engagement thing a little too much, and in the past, I would try to jump into too many things at once. Then I would be afraid to back out of them for fear of letting the community down.

So, younger Marksmen, find that balance, and don’t be afraid to find something outside of school that you are passionate about. Whether it’s Boy

Scouts, church or some other organization, the depth is invaluable.

In my days as a younger Marksman, I hadn’t yet learned to be critical and analytical.

I should point out that there’s a difference between being a skeptic and a cynic.

As Dr. Westrate made clear to my AP Euro class, it’s good to be a skeptic and ask the questions that will help the community. I love my school, and that’s why I feel the need to criticize it for its benefit.

As a member of Lion & Sword, I spend most of my tours bragging about St. Mark’s to parents and faculty candidates alike. I show off the backpacks strewn around campus. I talk about how interconnected we are between the grades: how I’m still friends with seniors from my freshman year, and how cool I think my second grade little buddy is. pending all of this time talking positively about my school was great, but it almost made me lose sight of what we could improve. I was giving a tour to a candidate for our faculty and

was asked, “What would you say is one weakness that St. Mark’s could improve on?”

I’d never thought of an answer to that question, and as the candidate told me, neither had anyone else asked.

The answer I came up with was as a school that prides ourselves on tradition, I feel like we could be more innovative.

Whether it’s adding technology in some areas of our curriculum or just revolutionizing how we teach, it would be amazing for St. Mark’s to be seen as the epitome of excellence in innovative teaching.

As a whole, community input and feedback are key to a well-oiled school.

By and large, Marksmen are invested in their school and their own education and would love to give input to see their school improve.

As a school that is for the boys, I believe that we can take even greater steps to be “by the boys. At a school like St. Mark’s, student involvement is a natural part of student life. So for a school that gives us all so much, we should give our feedback in return.

Sports editor Will Forbes discusses the importance of dealing with adversity.

W

e’re leading 5-2 with two outs in the fifth inning when I enter the game to pitch.

The other team has the bases loaded, but this appears to be a game we have well in hand.

We’ve been leading the whole game, and the offense on the other side hasn’t done anything more than scatter a few hits.

I’m confident when I toe the rubber, my warm up pitches having popped Canyon Kyle’s catcher’s mitt right in the spots I wanted.

The first hitter steps into the batter’s box. I dig around in my glove, finding the seams. I rear back and fire a four-seam fastball.

It’s in on the hands – right where I want it – and the hitter gets jammed, hitting a groundball to third base. Gordon Gunn, usually one of our most sure-handed fielders, bobbles the ball.

I want to scream. I did exactly what I was supposed to do yet here we are, stuck in this jam.

Instead, I take a deep breath, adjust my hat, and focus on getting the next guy.

After two quick strikes, the at-bat turns into a battle.

I throw a fastball up and away, trying to get him to chase – he doesn’t. I throw a curveball that I’m sure is going to get him – he tips it foul. The fight continues until the count is ultimately worked all the way to 3-2.

I can’t afford to walk this guy – I have to throw a fastball.

He knows exactly what’s coming, times it up and smacks a line drive into left field, scoring two more runs. We go on to lose the game.

Baseball is a unique sport in that there’s nowhere to hide.

As a pitcher, the worst feeling is coming to a game, waiting four innings to pitch, having a bad outing and then having to sit for two more innings thinking about every little thing you could’ve done better.

There are two ways to respond to failure. You can do what I did: have a bad outing and then sit in silence for the rest of the game worried about your mess-ups.

Or you can be like Gordon Gunn: after you make an error you get back in the dugout and immediately start encouraging your teammates and thinking about regaining the lead. And in the next inning when he got another groundball, he fielded it smoothly and fired over to first for the out.

Sports are about how you respond to failure, and I think everyone needs to take a page out of Gordon’s book sometimes.

It doesn’t do you any good to get in your own head and overthink after mistakes. The best way to respond is by putting it behind you, focusing on the next play and staying positive to help motivate your teammates.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS CONTINUE STRONG SEASONS Middle School sports teams are looking to end their seasons on a high note after facing a particularly grueling first half of spring.

The season so far has been a difficult one for both lacrosse teams. The blue team’s record sits at 0-3, and the gold team’s at 1-2.

Despite tough competition, the baseball teams have managed to come away with records of 3-2-1 for the eighth-graders and 3-2 for the seventh-graders. Team members, however, are confident they can end with records well over .500.

“We need to make the easy plays and put the ball into play,” eighth-grader Jacob Daniels said. “By doing the easy stuff over and over, we create problems for the other team.”

defecit to win the Lost Pines Invitational in Austin March 26 and 27.

"It was cool to see our five players come together and rally the way they did in Austin," Daugbjerg said. "We have a great dynamic this year, and it's a lot of fun."

Even though a parent can be helpful to a team and their atmosphere, there are times where the dad or mom can step over the line between supportive and intrusive. Hunter feels a key to balancing that line is communication.

“As a parent, I understand being an advocate for your son or daughter in sports, in the classroom, et cetera,” Hunter said. “As a coach though, there has to be some kind of boundary that is set as to what is appropriate or not. Sometimes that boundary can get a little hazy. I think that as a coach, you just have to be clear with saying that we appreciate positive support, vocal support that is geared toward motivating our players.”

Overall, Hunter feels the combination of interactive dialogue between parents and coaches paired with communication can create a bond that is very productive for any team.

“Parents are such a viable and vibrant part of any sports community,” Hunter said. “When they have a knowledge base of the sport and of what the coach is trying to do, the better off we’re all served. I think if there’s common ground that can be found between parents and coaches, you’re setting up a situation that could be a healthy, positive, productive environment.”

Preston thinks the importance of an athlete trying to appease both his parents and a coach with his performance is minimal compared to the importance of them taking pleasure in their own work.

“Personal pride outweighs anything that you can do for anybody else,” Preston said. “[Zach] may like it that [his parents are] there and to hear us cheering for him. But at some point, for any man to be able to do something for himself and take pride in what he does, that’s going to take you further than anything else.”

unior varsity baseball coach Dennis Kelly gets off his plane after a long transatlantic flight, eager to see Montpellier, France for the first time.

As he leaves the airport, he instantly falls in love with the city.

The sights, the public transportation and the people all delight him. He has easy access to the Mediterranean Sea, and he gets to enjoy all sorts of French and North African food.

But Kelly is not in Montpellier as a tourist. He has a job to do.

For the next several months, Kelly will play the 2009 season for the Montpellier Barracudas of the French Elite Baseball League.

Kelly ended up finishing the season ranked in the top three in the league in several important offensive categories, including hits, steals, batting average, RBI and slugging percentage—enough production to earn the award for Hitter of the Year. He also had the opportunity to experience a new culture and a great new team.

“That whole year was the best experience,” Kelly said. “The sites I saw­—the Eiffel Tower. All the tourist things, those were cool, but I think the experience of living with just a really welcoming group of dudes in Montpellier was the best by far.”

Years before he began playing overseas, Kelly played at Jesuit Dallas, and he later played for Austin College in Sherman.

“In college, we started as a terrible

program my freshman year,” Kelly said.

“My senior year we got to the playoffs for the first time at Austin College in recent history. To be a part of a 180 degree turnaround was the best baseball experience I have ever experienced.”

After he graduated from college— holding several school records—Kelly began playing in Europe in 2008 with the Karlskoga Bats of the Swedish Elitserien Baseball League. Over the next five years, he played in France, Germany, Sweden and Australia, earning numerous accolades along the way.

KELLY In addition to the varying levels of competition he faced, Kelly also had to adapt to the different playing styles in each country.

“If I was to compare, the Germans would be more like a methodical Japanese style,” Kelly said, “[with] punctuality, and the game fits in a mechanical

box. The French were more literally like a laissez-faire approach. More handshakes, a little bit more of like a Latin approach to the game.”

Kelly also had to make some cultural adjustments when he was playing overseas in order to adjust to the language barrier.

“English being the international language made it much easier than if I was Russian or Lithuanian or something,” Kelly said. “French, they spoke probably the lowest level of English, where I was living. It was tough, [but] their English was much better than my French or German ever got. When I got back to America, my grammar was terrible because I had spoken six months straight of present tense only.” fter he retired from professional baseball in 2012, Kelly returned to America and became a personal athletic trainer and club baseball coach.

He began coaching here after former assistant varsity coach Chad Allen left to work in the Minnesota Twins organization.

“I inherited [Chad Allen’s] role immediately,” Kelly said. “I was the assistant varsity coach my first year.”

Kelly became the junior varsity head coach the next year, and he has loved coaching throughout his time here.

“I really enjoy the high expectations

that [St. Mark’s players] have,” Kelly said.

“Here at St. Marks, it’s a group of guys that are competitive. [They] want to do well. That’s probably my favorite part. Then the other things, such as human relationships between everyone.”

As a coach, Kelly tries to focus on one key tenet to guide his philosophy.

“I’d like to boil that down into one principle,” Kelly said. “I think the game is resilience.

I think there are 1,000 adjectives that can define the game. It’s really a game of going in with one plan of attack, adjusting when it beats you down, getting back up and trying a new plan of attack.”

For Kelly, his passion for coaching is what keeps him coming back to the game that has taken him all over the world.

“I would say number one is that it’s just a lot of fun,” Kelly said. “It’s a process where, no matter how good I think I am on a Monday, I’m immediately humbled on Tuesday. It’s a lot of fun.

It’s a lifelong challenge of getting a little bit better every single day.”

Debris in Bachman Lake hinders crew team

by Nathan Han t Bachman Lake, an island of sediment and trash has accumulated in the middle of the lake, affecting crew practices and canceling the annual regatta.

Recently, the issues at the lake have been at an all-time high, drawing the attention of local media. Rowers are hoping that the newfound attention will impact the chances of the lake receiving improvements from the city bond election in May. But definite improvements are still not in the works despite losing a third of the lake to the growing amounts of sediment, according to Assistant Coach Walt Miga.

“The island has definitely affected practice,” Miga said. “It’s taken a big portion of the lake, up to a a third of it is lost.

The dumping needs to be enforced. We’ve seen everything from ladders to cages to construction debris, and all of this really

needs to be controlled and regulated somehow.”

And other than affecting practice, the annual BLAST (Bachman Lake Annual Sprint Trials) regatta was canceled last year.

“It’ll probably be a few years before BLAST will be reintroduced,” Miga said.

With only two to three competitions in the season, the loss of a regatta hurts badly. Because of the cancellation of BLAST, the crew team went to the Central Youth Championships at an olympic training facility in Oklahoma City last year.

But continuing to go to competition in Oklahoma City might not be sustainable for the team.

“Going to Centrals is dependent on what happens in each year,” Miga said.

“So we’d definitely like to have a regatta here in Dallas.”

Improvements have been long overdue and rowers are hoping to get back

their lake, which has been plagued by increasing bird levels because of the island.

But with improvements might come the loss of a rowing season.

“In my estimation, it will take about two years at a minimum to get it taken care of,” Miga said. “Last year they dredged the lake was 2002. It took a full season so we could lose a whole rowing

season.”

Even despite the lake’s faults and the potential loss of a rowing season in the spring or fall, Miga is still confident in the lake and the potential it offers.

“Bachman was a great facility and it could be good again,” Miga said. “I think St. Mark’s will be staying at Bachman as long as we can.”

Freshman Billy Lockhart sets crew record

by Nathan Han Freshman Billy Lockhart set a record for the fastest freshman 2K time ever in crew with a 6:54.8 time in the team’s first 2K of the year.

In a 2K test, rowers row two thousand meters on a rowing machine, also known as an erg, to set a baseline for their speed, similar to a mile run for runners.

Lockhart set a 1:43.7 average for 500 meters and had the second-fastest time on the team.

“The numbers were the sole thing I was focusing on during the race,” Lockhart said.

“At the end, I was so drained that I couldn’t think straight.”

To put things in perspective, last year’s best freshman time was 7:31.5. Lockhart’s pace, over 30 seconds quicker, was the fastest ever for a freshman under Head Coach Pitts Yandell’s current tenure.

“It’s motivating to hear that I set the freshman 2K record,” Lockhart said. “A lot of credit goes to the coaches and my teammates for working me before, during and after the race.”

In their first regatta of the season, Lockhart and freshman Christian Duessel, who rowed the second-fastest freshman time on the erg, placed 4th in their heat.

“Pure power on the erg doesn’t always translate to success on the water,” Yandell said. “At our first regatta every year [freshmen] usually don’t row well because they haven’t had the time on the water compared to the other boats competing.”

But with some crucial experience under their belt and an extra month of practice, Lockhart is confident he can transition his success on the erg into results in a regatta “I’ve got my sights set high for the next few years with the [team],” Lockhart said.

Not only are their running times similar, but you might have a hard time telling them apart.

The reason: they’re identical twins.

T

he Arroyos have always been competitors, but they haven’t always ran track. Andres ran cross country in the fall of his eighthgrade year while Pablo played football. In the spring, they both played lacrosse.

“Andres convinced Pablo to come out for cross country as a freshman this year as a challenge,” said John Turek, varsity track and field head coach. “They both decided that [running] was their calling because of the way they’re built.

They have a beautiful stride and good mechanics that we’re still working on.”

According to Turek, their competitiveness stands out the most. But the Arroyos know that too much competition can hurt their relationship.

“In the past, we might have been a lot more aggressive than we were and if we were still so aggressive I don’t think the competition would be healthy,” Andres said.

Regardless, Turek sees their competitive spirit through all facets of their relationship.

“I think that as much as they love competing against each other, they both love supporting each other,” Turek

said. “Twins like to hang out together. I am the beneficiary of their abilities, their mindsets and their competitiveness.”

In the March 22 Bradley V. Urschel (B.V.U.) Invitational, the twins finished in the top eight for the 1600m race, only separated by about two seconds.

In big track meets like the B.V.U., it’s the competitiveness against the other runners that pushes the Arroyos to give it their all.

“Usually during a race,” Andres said, “it’s all about how good you are feeling, and if you are not feeling good, then usually you will slow down or you will not be able to put out so much effort, but if you have so much on the line, you are more competitive about it, and it really helps you get that one hundred and ten percent out of what you can do.”

“It was just the same ability,” Pablo said. “When there’s someone you know that’s pretty much the same person or that runs pretty much the same mileage, you know you should be able to do as well as they do.”

While the twins continue to improve their times at

meets, they are, obviously, hard to tell apart. Turek has had his fair share of struggles in determining who is who.

“During a race when they’re running laps, we have to keep checking with each other who’s in the lead,” Turek said. “I think they have different shoes so we go by what their shoes are. I tell them they have to get different haircuts because I can’t figure them out.” or the twins, it’s effortless.

Whether they like it or not, their identical looks will inevitably confuse others.

“We don’t have to try,” Pablo said. “It just kind of happens. [Turek] can’t tell the difference at all.”

Turek has coached twins before. But unlike them, the Arroyos feed off of each other’s competitive nature.

“I’ve coached a lot of twins in my lifetime that are evenly matched, and I have coached some that are not,” Turek said. “But these two are.

They almost challenge one another.”

In his opinion, Turek believes the Arroyos’ “limitless” mindset will tap into their potential to be solid distance runners.

“They don’t set limits on themselves when they go into a meet,” Turek said. “They just compete against who’s there.

We don’t ever have to talk about time. That advantage has helped them go into a race and compete with whoever is there without worrying about what grade they’re in, what their best times are or how fast they run. It doesn’t bother them.”

enior Victor Barton can’t believe it.

He’s the only senior not to be named captain of the track team.

As he goes through the motions in his warm-up he thinks back to his Spring Break.

Barton decided to forgo track practices in order to go on the senior trip to Cancun, which he had helped plan for close to a year.

And he can’t help but wonder if that decision cost him his spot as a captain.

everal athletes face a similar dilemma to Barton, especially around Spring Break.

With water polo taking their trip to Romania over break and lacrosse taking their trips to various places across the country, athletes are more increasingly being asked to forgo vacation time in order to practice and travel with the team.

And while these trips or normal practices over Spring Break are not mandatory, athletes feel the pressure of losing playing time, or in Barton’s case, captainship, if they don’t go.

On the other extreme, baseball is one of the few sports that doesn’t hold any practices over spring break Under head coach Johnny Hunter’s watch, optional practices over break were eliminated, and the week off truly is just that for the baseball team: a week off.

“A lot of seniors have their Cancun trip at the same time,” Hunter said. “So they won’t be able to come over break, and that’s one of the big reasons we don’t hold practice.”

In the baseball team’s case, Hunter believes the extra rest given by not practicing allows the team to get some crucial rest, especially for the team’s pitchers.

“I find that having that week of rest is helpful for the team, especially pitchers, to recover from the first part of the

season 26 and catch a break from throwing everyday,” Hunter said.

“The break also falls in a perfect time for me to allow my pitchers to get some rest.

They’re starting to get into the bulk of the season and feel the workload, but having the week off allows them to rest and come back strong.”

For other sports, taking the week off might be a luxury they can’t afford, according to Athletic Director Mark Sullivan.

“The level of competition has gotten a lot higher in the weight room,” Sullivan said. “Kids are bigger, stronger and faster than they were when I was in school. We didn’t train like high school students do today. It’s just a different world.”

That increased intensity is a large part of the reason several teams practice and travel over the break. Golf and basketball head coach Greg Guiler has his own beliefs for practice over vacation.

“I try to strike a balance,” Guiler said. “I think a balance is healthy, but I think for a coach not to do anything depends on the sport. But I think there’s a healthy seriousness for basketball, and other sports, that really needs to be fulfilled.”

“I think it depends on the season,” Guiler said. “Some years there are a group of guys where their bodies and minds can handle the grind of going straight through break. Having up to a month of time away from practice can really hurt a team, especially with SPC only a month after the last day of Christmas break.

“If you start a season, and you have a championship tournament,” Sullivan said. “It’s hard to come out in the beginning and get a head of steam going and get everybody in shape and get the teams working cohesively, and then take a big break and come back. And in some cases you have to start over from scratch.”

One thing both Hunter and Guiler agree on is that planning and communication with the team beforehand is necessary in order to have effective practice over a break.

“If everybody was receptive to practice or travel over the break I think that would be a great idea,” Hunter said. “But it is all based on the baseball families and what they would think.”

“If a coach has communicated well in advance that this is something he wants to do over a break and he makes it abundantly clear,” Guiler said, “then that’s something you need to plan on doing if you plan on being on the team.”

But for all of the athletes and coaches competing for an SPC title, one thing is clear: to win, you need to work and stay consistent.

“It’s become almost imperative that teams should do something over spring break,” Sullivan said. “Because of school policy, we can’t require a student to be at practice. But we want students to understand that being committed to a team means they are committed to a purpose and an end goal.”
