FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Students, Parents, Teachers, Coaches, and Friends, The values and lessons that Marksmen learn and develop in athletics are an integral part of their education at St. Mark’s and play a key role in their journey on the path to manhood. For more than 110 years, our athletic programs have provided excellent opportunities for boys to stretch themselves physically and emotionally, developing vitally important life skills, including perseverance, discipline, and teamwork. While unexpected events this year brought dislocation, physical separation, and a premature end to our spring seasons, we celebrate with fervor what has been an outstanding year of competition in St. Mark’s athletics. Our teams not only demonstrated tremendous athleticism, but also exemplary sportsmanship – the hallmark of a Marksman – on and off the field. Guided by dedicated coaches and supported by devoted parents, our boys learn the value of respect for one another, as well as for their opponents. Learning to win and lose with dignity is an essential life lesson that will endure long after the season ends. It is our sincere hope that every one of our athletes not only enjoys his time competing as a Lion, but more importantly, that he carries with him valuable life lessons. We are particularly grateful to all of you who supported our athletic programs throughout the course of the year. It has been a pleasure and a privilege for Nancy and me to once again cheer on our student athletes. We want to extend our heartiest congratulations and gratitude to all of you for making this an unforgettable year in sports at St. Mark’s. Go Lions! Sincerely,

David W. Dini Eugene McDermott Headmaster

FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dear guests, Welcome to the 2019-2020 Virtual Athletic Awards Ceremony where we celebrate a year that has certainly highlighted the incredible perseverance and resolve of the St. Mark’s athletic community. There are so many fond memories to reflect upon that demonstrate the remarkable character, leadership, and integrity of our student-athletes in the face of adversity. As in years past, we come together to honor the hard work, commitment, and dedication exemplified by our student-athletes in each of their respective seasons. We also celebrate the lessons learned through athletic competition that will continue to shape the lives of these young men for many years to come. Teamwork, character, perseverance, and humility are critical to the success of any team, and all were clearly exhibited by our student-athletes throughout the duration of this unprecedented year. This is also a time to celebrate all the strong relationships formed between teammates, coaches, families, and staff. These are the bonds that often last a lifetime, and are forged by the shared challenges, successes, and failures that come along with participating in team sports. Most importantly, we reflect upon the growth of these boys, especially the Seniors, as they leave St. Mark’s to conquer new and exciting challenges. We are very proud of their many accomplishments and are so grateful for the time that we have had to work with them. While we can’t be together on campus, it is our hope that this Virtual Athletic Awards Ceremony appropriately captures the immense pride and admiration that we all share for these studentathletes. Please join me in remembering the many powerful moments from this extraordinary year that have given us so much to celebrate today. Sincerely,

Sean Lissemore Director of Athletics

The St. Mark’s Varsity Cheerleading Squad had a great year. Following the announcement of our team in April, we started May practices leading up to a week of cheer camp in early June. Throughout cheer camp, we worked on technique coached by NCA staff and came together as a unified team. We started the season off right with the Game On pep rally in August

and kept our spirit up throughout the season – in pep rallies and on the sidelines. Though the tornado hindered our ability to perform in the homecoming pep rally, we were able to finish strong by doing a final routine for our peers at Hockaday. Go Lions!

CROSS COUNTRY

VARSITY Head Coach Assistant Coach

John Turek Ryan Hershner

Erie similarities Same # of years in between winning SPC Titles, same date of competition, 24 athletes on the team, almost the same cycle of meets and weekends off, this year we had 5 in the top 12, 2013 had 5 in the top 14, and, of course, the same team result at SPC. The 2019 Cross Country season was a season to remember. It was filled with many great memories that will live forever in the hearts and minds of all those athletes, coaches and parents that were part of it. After a 6-year hiatus, St. Mark’s won the SPC Cross Country Championship. 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

Captains Andres Arroyo Pablo Arroyo, Ben Hao Tyler Nussbaumer, Devan Patel In my 39+ years of coaching I have never been more proud of a team than I was on Saturday November 9, 2019. All season long we mixed and matched the team to keep it competitive amongst all the runners. With 24 athletes on the team, each week saw a change in the Varsity A and Varsity B and JV rosters weekly. From the very first meet, The Greenhill Relays, we knew we had something special. We ran without Pablo, Tyler or Sahil on the Varsity squad and still finished 3rd overall. The following week we traveled to the Marcus I Invitational after 11

a 1-year hiatus and ran teams in the Elite Division, Varsity Open Division and the Junior Varsity Elite Division. Our top team finished in 18th place competing against some of the best teams in Texas. Andres and Pablo gave us a glimpse of things to come when they ran 16:12 and 16:26 respectively. Tyler and Julian dropped big course PR’s and finished with a 17:05 and 17:30 repsectively. Sahil showed his potential with a PR of 17:35. The next week saw us competing at the Southlake Carroll Invitational. Again, we ran in the Elite Race, Varsity Open, and JV Elite for better competition. This time we finished 9th out of 35 teams. Andres and Pablo again led the team with identical times of 16:17. The Varsity Open Team finished 17th and was led by Bryce Nivet. We took the next week off and then resumed competition with the Lovejoy XC Fall Classic. In keep with the training and competition plan for the season, we again ran in the Elite, Varsity Open and JV Races. This meet we finished 3rd, same as 2013, out of 22 teams in the Elite race. Andres & Pablo dipped under 16:00, Julian dipped under 17:00 and Tyler and Sahil were under 17:24. Freshman Trey Stager surprised everyone and finished as our 6th man in a very good time of 18:05. The Varsity Open boys finished 1st out of 19 teams with Fisayo Omonije leading the way 12

with a huge PR of 17:42. The next week we took a small group to compete in the Carroll Dragon XC Classic. We ran the Varsity Open race, without our top five runners and came away with a 12th place finish. The highlight here was Trey posting the fastest time on the team with a 17:44. We took off the next weekend and then competed in the Maverick Ramble, hosted by St. John’s on the SPC course. Most of the top schools in the conference were there as well as San Antonio Antonians, the only private school team ranked above us in the state, so this was a big meet. It also saw the return of our top 5 runners after 3 weeks without competition. Under ideal condition and a great course, we ran extremely well and won the meet going away. Every person ran a PR in the race. Pablo and Andres finished 1-2, with times of 15:53 and 15:55 which moved them to #3 and #4 ALLTIME. Not to be outdone, Tyler, Julian and Sahil all dipped under 17:00 to finish in 12th, 13th and 15th overall. Trey and Fisayo also enjoyed big PR’s. The JV team, led by individual champ, Bryce Nivet, finished 1,3,4,5,8,9,10,11th overall. We took a week off and then raced in the SPC North Zone Meet. This was a good opportunity to race and see what we needed to do to prepare for the SPC Meet. The course was altered because of severe rains the st. mark’s school of texas

day before. It was a flat, fast 2.97m course. That did not alter our focus and competitive desire. We ran so tough that we surprised ourselves with our results. Pablo finished 2nd in a time of 14:57 which, converted to 5K gave him a tie for the School record. With Andres sick, Tyler stepped right up and finished 3rd, Sahil in 4th, Julian in 7th, and Trey in 17th. That gave us a score of 33 points. The rest of the team followed suite and finished with great times and places. All that was left was hard training and a very competitive time trial to see who would finish in the top 10 and represent St. Mark’s at the SPC Championships. All season long this group traded places with guys moving up and down but always staying together. We trained hard, very hard and we raced hard, always remembering what the goal was. The time trial was great and proved to the team and coaching staff that the team was ready for the “big show”. The SPC race itself was the final chapter in an incredible season. No matter how successful you are during the season, the SPC Meet can make or break it. We entered the championship meet with high expectations, we were the team to beat and everyone knew it. This year, rather than constantly focusing on the SPC Meet, we treated it like just another meet. The race turned out better than Ryan and I could 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

have ever imagined. The team was focused, and their confidence was high. The gun went off and after 1 mile we were in very good position, except for Tyler who was enjoying the scenery, but I said to myself “it still early in the race”. At the 2-mile mark we, had 5 people in the top 15 and I said to myself, “it’s only 2/3rds through the race, anything can happen”. With less than a ½ mile to go we still had 5 people in the top 12, and I smiled. A bevy of emotion swept through my body and I could not believe what I was seeing. There was Pablo and Andres leading St. Mark’s with a 3rd and 4th place finish and right behind him was Sahil in 10th, Tyler in 11th, and Julian in 12th. We had done it. We had come to the meet as the team to beat and we left victorious. We didn’t just win, we dominated the race. We scored 40 points, our lowest total since the 2003 championships team and we had 5 runners in the top 12 and earned 5 ALL-SPC honors. We finished the season as the No.1 private school team and 54th best overall team in Texas. We also finished the season as the best Cross-Country Team ever with a composite time of 1:21.44. We had an incredible season and next year looks just as good. With 5 juniors, 10 sophomores and 4 freshmen, we should be ready for next year.

It was my honor to coach the 2019 St. Mark’s fencing team. We had a very good season. We are proud to have Fritz Hesse and Christopher Wang competing at the national level. Brandon Song, Siva Uppalapati, and Rakhil Manduva competed at the Regional level. We are looking forward to the expanded high school team’s competitions next year in which we expect all team members will want to compete. I would like thank the entire team for their dedication

I also thank the parents for their support of the fencing program and for allowing us the opportunity to work with each of your boys. I especially thank the seniors for their years of service to the program and for their leadership and dedication to the team members. You will each be greatly missed.

The 2019 Lions football season was memorable in every way. The team surpassed all expectations and competed at a very high level. A special group of seniors left their mark on the program for years to come and a group of inexperienced underclassmen matured and made great contributions to the team.

the team won the game going away 44-13.

Inexperience at almost every position on the field led many to question how the 2020 Lions would compete. Early scrimmages highlighted just how much this group needed to learn and grow. But a number of questions would be answered in the first 2 games.

Anthony Andrews Taylor Hopkin Paxton Scott Carr Urschel

The home opener came the following week against a Cistercian team which ran for over 400 yards and scored 50 points the week before. An outstanding team defensive effort led by ends Carr Urschel and Taylor Hopkin stifled the Hawks all night and propelled the team to a 37-7 victory.

The Lions opened up in Oklahoma against Casady. Quarterback Anthony Andrews made his debut throwing and running for scores and Paxton Scott made his mark both catching passes and running back a punt as

Next the Lions would face defending SPC champions Kinkaid at home, a team that historically had had their way with St. Mark’s. The Falcons jumped to a 21-0 lead, but this St. Mark’s team was too resilient and tough to fold. The Lions fought back due an outstanding defensive effort and interceptions by Ryan McCord and Elijah Ellis. The offense began to find weaknesses in the Kinkaid defense and one of the great

comebacks on Hunt field ensued. The Lions got the score to 32-34 and were driving just out of field goal range to win when their critical 4th down pass was ruled incomplete. A heartbreaking loss, but an incredible battle. The Lions would have a similar battle in Houston against St. John’s that came down to the last series of the game, coming up short by just a touchdown. Following losses to Houston Christian and EHS the team began to prepare for homecoming when everything was about to change. Sunday, October 20 would change things dramatically for everyone at St. Mark’s. With tornado damage rendering the campus nonoperational, there was talk of possibly cancelling the rest of the season. Thanks to the commitment of the St. Mark’s athletic administration and the generosity and support of both The Greenhill School and Hockaday Schools the Lions would have an opportunity to play the last 2 games of the season and practice at Hockaday. Homecoming would be at Greenhill and it would be an emotional night. Both defenses would set the tone early as the Lions went into the locker room up 10-0 at halftime. The Lions offense stepped up in the second half and the defense held the Hornets to at total of 100 yds. An excited crowd saw the Lions win their homecoming game 25-0. The final game of the season against ESD would be exceptionally exciting. ESD, averaging over 40 points a game was the clear favorite on paper, but the Lions were up to the challenge. 18

Both defenses were dominant in the first half as the teams went into the locker room tied 3-3. The second half was memorable as the Lions, down 10-9, recovered an onside kick and quickly converted to lead 17-10. The game would go into double overtime with the Lions unfortunately barely coming up short 31-24. Special thanks to the players and coaches who made this season memorable. Football is a hard sport, and not for everyone. The sacrifice and effort that they make to represent St. Mark’s in this great and challenging game is special. Seniors Wyatt Awtrey, Charlie Rubarth and Colton Wheatley anchored the offensive line flanked by junior Mike Mendoza and sophomore Sam Eluemunoh. Senior Kasen Roberson led a trio of running backs which included sophomores Niles Harvey and Elijah Ellis. Senior captain Paxton Scott led the receiving corps which included junior Connor Gaffney, sophomores Connor Duffy and Peter Orsak, and freshman Blake Malouf. Pulling the trigger was senior captain quarterback Anthony Andrews supported by sophomore Alex Nadalini and freshman Asher Wilburn. A tenacious defensive line set the foundation for the defense led by senior captain Taylor Hopkin, and juniors Charles Wilson and Drew Woodward and backed up by junior Luis Garcia-Ojeda and sophomores Luke Martin and Max Vafa. The linebacking corps led by senior captain Carr Urschel included juniors Abe Echt and Rex Corey, and sophomores Elijah Ellis, Cole st. mark’s school of texas

Norman, and James Then. The secondary was led by seniors Ryan McCord, Colin Campbell, and Garrett Davis, and included juniors Luke Nayfa, Robert Pou, Trevor Gicheru, and sophomore Zack Stone.

This group of young men represented St. Mark’s exceptionally well and should be praised for their accomplishments. Also special thanks to the athletic training staff and the athletic administration team for their continued support of the team.

While the 2018 volleyball season had little expectation to start, the 2019 season was set with high ones. Finishing a magical playoff run the previous year set the stage for a repeat opportunity. But there would be a path that the Lions would have to fight through to reach that goal again.

starters go down with injuries. And with those injuries, adjustments had to be made. The silver lining in it all was that it allowed younger guys the opportunity to step into high pressure roles and get valuable playing time to prepare them for future roles. But the team struggled to find any consistency through the first half of the season.

Things started very promising during the preseason. The boys were picking up where they left off pretty nicely. Everyone seemed poised to work toward that final goal. But then the injury “bug started affecting the team. Throughout the regular season we saw various

our season in flux. In true St. Mark’s fashion, the boys handled themselves with the utmost integrity and grit as our gymnasium was destroyed. We were forced to find new places to practice and new places to play our matches. They were only obstacles though. We would make our way through them. Once the SPC tournament started, our momentum had been stalled a bit. But the boys fought through it all and managed to get themselves

The 2019-20 basketball Lions will forever be remembered as one of the absolute finest teams in St. Mark’s athletics history. Culminating with an SPC championship and numerous accolades for a talented group that overcame enormous obstacles, the Marksmen selflessly invested in one another and, in turn, maximized their “SM Strong” spirit.

Oprea to put an exclamation point on a dominant first half that gave St. Mark’s a 29-point lead. In the 2nd half, the team’s 5 seniors ensured that the 3rd quarter didn’t relinquish the advantage. Eddie Raj’s 4 points, combined with lockdown defense and tough ball security (against very active pressure defense!) from Camp Collins, Taylor Hopkin, & Aaron Thorne enabled the Marksmen to finish off the win. Senior Andrew Laczkowski led all scorers with 21 and added 13 rebounds and 5 assists.

The team opened its season with a pair of daunting contests against perennial public-school powers. On 11/15, the Lions visited Lincoln High School and used an excited crowd’s momentum to jump off to a fast start. Sophomore Colin Smith rose above the rest for a thunderous slam in traffic, and junior Harrison Ingram caught a beautiful alley-oop lob from sophomore Corvin 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

Andrew Laczkowski Harrison Ingram

The next day, the Lions traveled to Fort Worth to participate in the “Cow Town Tip Off Classic” hosted at North Crowley High School. A slate of marquee matchups was highlighted by this barn-burner between St. Marks and Allen High School. Utilizing a unique 25

shot-clock format and featuring several highly recruited players on both sides, the game had a collegiate feel from start to finish. Despite trailing by double digits, St. Mark’s demonstrated resilient maturity and benefited from the hot shooting of Corvin Oprea, whose 3-pointer with a minute remaining tied the game at 50. Unfortunately, on the ensuing possession, Allen made a 3 of their own. With 28 seconds on the clock, the Marksmen had a good look from 3 to tie the game, but the shot went awry, ultimately resulting in a narrow defeat. The basketball team enjoyed a fun but frenetic week of hoops during the Thanksgiving break. On November 22nd, the team traveled to Little Elm, hoping to avenge a loss from a year ago. The Marksmen jumped out to an early lead, thanks to hot 1st-half shooting from sophomore Tate Laczkowski, who made the most of his 1st career varsity start. All 5 starters finished the game in double figures, enabling the Lions to secure a 80-67 win. The following week, St. Mark’s accepted an invitation to compete in the top bracket of the Dallas Mavericks Fall Classic. The event, held in Frisco, featured 16 talented programs across the metroplex. St. Mark’s 1st-round game again Southlake Carroll started extremely well with senior Andrew Laczkowski notching 16 first-half points. However, the early lead quickly dissipated, and the Lions were forced into a slowed-down game that was tight throughout the fourth quarter. Thankfully, SM hung on for a 65-57 victory. In the 2nd round, the Lions squared off against perennial power South Oak Cliff. Sophomore Colin Smith posted 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists in the 1st half to help the Lions explode for a 17-point advantage at the break. Sophomore Caleb Vanzant 26

and freshman Isaac Bird controlled the game late with some offensive exploits of their own, as the Lions earned an 82-59 win and a spot in the semi-finals later that night against Frisco Memorial. In that game, Colin Smith once again brought his A game with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. Senior Andrew Laczkowski poured in an impressive 23-point, 11-rebound effort. Sophomore Noah Shelby also got hot from the 3-point line and dished out several assists of his own. And Junior Harrison Ingram was 1 assist shy of a triple-double, as St. Mark’s controlled the action and forged an 85-56 win. The championship round the following day was held at the Comerica Center, a beautiful arena that plays home to the Mavericks’ G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends. Poor shooting in the first quarter put the Lions in a bit of a hole against Prestonwood Christian Academy, but it was all St. Mark’s from there. Harrison Ingram led all scores with 19 points, and his 8-rebound, 5-assist effort earned him tournament MVP honors. Andrew Laczkowski also received recognition as a member of the all-tournament team. Having lost in the championship at the buzzer a year ago, hoisting the trophy made for a sweet story and a tremendous start to the season! Following Thanksgiving, the Lions prepared for an exciting game at the American Airlines center on November 30th. The event featured 3 of the highest-regarded boys basketball programs in the state – defending UIL 6A state champs, Duncanville High School, perennial powerhouse Yates out of Houston, and St. Mark’s, the top-ranked private school in Texas – competing against 3 of the best boys programs from around the nation. NBA players were on-hand, along with multitudes of college recruiters to watch st. mark’s school of texas

one of the most elite events in recent high school basketball history. This was the 11th year of the Thanksgiving hoop fest, but when LeBron James’ and Dwyane Wade’s sons’ programs were announced as participants, the website crashed with extraordinary ticket demand. To make room for the thousands of interested fans, the event was moved to the AAC. St. Mark’s had the privilege of competing against Prolific Prep, the 4th-ranked team in the country out of California. It was surreal to walk into the arena and see the St. Mark’s crest on the scoreboard where fans typically root for their favorite NBA team. Impressively, the boys representing the navy & gold didn’t allow their VIP privileges to affect their laser-like focus. The team turned in a fabulous first-half defensive performance, limiting one of the nation’s most explosive attacks to a mere 20 points. Harrison Ingram, the top-ranked junior in Texas, gave the fans something to talk about with a dominant offensive performance that helped extend the Lions’ 2-point halftime lead to 8 partway through the third quarter. Unfortunately, though, St. Mark’s lost momentum in the 3rd quarter and relinquished the lead for good, ultimately falling 44-57. The strong showing, however, validated SM’s top-100 ranking nationally and proved that this squad belongs in the conversation alongside the country’s best. The fan support from Marksman families across the community electrified the atmosphere and made for a spectacular experience that won’t soon be forgotten as one of the more special evenings in the rich narrative of SM sports.

newly renovated Spencer Gym was unveiled for competition for the first time. The tornado that ripped through north Texas, leaving a 16-mile path of devastation, had destroyed Hicks Gymnasium, where many tremendous basketball memories were forged over the last 20 years. As a result, practices looked extremely different for the 1st several weeks of the season, as teams were bussed to remote locations while Spencer was being prepared to host varsity games. It seemed quite fitting that the 5 seniors on the squad – each of whom played an enormous role in locking arms and serving the community together in the aftermath of the storm – started the first home game together and played extremely well. Taylor Hopkin led all scorers with the 17 points and did not miss a shot from the field to ensure the Lions got off to a fast start. Andrew Laczkowski logged the 1st made 3 and 1st dunk on the new court, and every player scored at least a pair of baskets in route to a balanced 97-point scoring effort. On 12/7, the Marksmen traveled to Highland Park where the atmosphere was electric. Laczkowski once again broke things open with a thunderous dunk, thanks to a phenomenal fullcourt pass from fellow captain Harrison Ingram. Ingram led all scorers with more than 20 and had a full arsenal of prolific play-making on display all night long. Both teams shot the ball well, but it was the Lions who forged a sizable first-half lead and ultimately came away with a 70-52 victory.

The following week, St. Mark’s participated in a pair of contests against larger public schools in the area. On Wednesday, the Lions defeated Sunset High School. It was a special evening for the community, as the

The following week, St. Mark’s won its lone game, a home contest against the Anglican Church Grammar School, an all-boys school about twice the size of SM from Brisbane, Australia. This biannual tradition over the course of the last decade has afforded Marksman families a fun and fulfilling

cross-cultural experience as hosts for Churchie players. And, on the court, the action has been very up-tempo and competitive over the years. With college coaches representing various ACC and Big 10 schools on-hand to get a closer look at St. Mark’s recruits, the Lions jumped out to a fast start. Colin Smith notched 18 first-half points that included back-to-back-to-back 3-point makes, and senior Andrew Laczkowski also scored 15 of his game-high 20 in the first half (along with 3 assists, 3 steals, & 3 blocks) to give the home team a 54-29 lead at the break. Junior Harrison Ingram finished the game with a very robust stat line - 14 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals – and sophomores Corvin Oprea and Caleb Vanzant turned in extremely efficient efforts (18 combined points on only 10 shot attempts), as the Lions cruised to a 93-56 victory. The team stayed extremely active over the winter break. On Friday, December 20th, the Lions squared off against the defending UIL 5A state champions from Lancaster High School. The game took place at Hockaday, and the atmosphere was fantastic, as the game seesawed back-and-forth throughout. The Lions held a slim lead at halftime that turned into a 10-point deficit early in the 4th quarter. However, St. Mark’s battled back to tie the game, thanks in part to a huge triple-double performance (22 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists) from Harrison Ingram. Unfortunately, with the score tied late in the fourth, standout Colin Smith was assessed his fifth foul, and the tide turned the wrong direction from there, ultimately resulting in a loss for the Marksmen. Smith finished the game with 10 points as 1 of 4 Lions to reach double-figures. Corvin Oprea (14) and senior Andrew Laczkowski (23) also turned in stellar scoring performances. 28

On December 26-28th, the squad competed in the Dallas Independent School District’s holiday invitational, which featured 32 teams. St. Mark’s defeated Hillcrest in the 1st round, as Noah Shelby started the game on fire, connecting on 6 3-pointers en route to a 20-point performance. Aaron Thorne also had a major impact, sparking a second-half run with a handful of hustle plays that led to a 67-43 victory. In the second round, the Lions faced South Garland, a 6A final 4 team each of the last 2 seasons. Colin Smith led all scorers with 22 points and rounded out his robust stat line with 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Harrison Ingram tallied 19 points on an efficient shooting effort (7-10 from the field and 5-6 at the free throw stripe). The Lions won that game 62-46 and moved on to the quarterfinals the following day. This time, the opponent was Skyline High School. Corvin Oprea and Andrew Laczkowski each hit a pair of 3’s in the first half, and Taylor Hopkin added to his team-leading 3-point percentage with a triple of his own. The game was tight throughout, but the Lions managed a 7-point win to advance to the semifinals that evening. For the second time in a week, St. Mark’s faced Lancaster. The boys in blue and gold jumped out to an 18-8 first quarter advantage. However, some secondquarter foul trouble enabled Lancaster to cut the margin to 2 at half time. Freshman Isaac Bird stepped up in a major way to help hold Lancaster’s most highly recruited player to 11 points (he had 38 during the teams’ first meeting against each other). More hot shooting from Oprea and a double-double from Laczkowski gave the Lions a late lead, but an unfortunate technical foul resulting from a score table discrepancy pushed the game to OT where St. Mark’s was unable to ever hold a lead. A buzzer-beating attempt by Harrison st. mark’s school of texas

Ingram (the game’s leading scorer with 19 points) fell short, and SM was handed a 62-63 defeat. The loss was disappointing but set up a 3rd-place contest with Dallas Carter, a team the Lions narrowly defeated twice during the 2018-19 season. St. Mark’s forged a lead in the 1st quarter but struggled to connect on numerous open 3’s in the 2nd. Fortunately, shots started falling in the 3rd and 4th quarters, and Andrew Laczkowski converted on 8 of 8 free throws to lead 3 Lions who finished with double-digit scoring (Laczkowski 19, Smith 18, and Shelby 10). St. Mark’s won the game 57-46, and Colin Smith was recognized for several tremendous performances by being named to the All-Tournament Team. On January 3rd, the Marksmen took to the court yet again at Prestonwood Christian Academy. Both teams were on fire and finished an up-and-down first half with 10 made 3-pointers each. Colin Smith and Andrew Laczkowski once again found their scoring rhythms and finished the game with 28 and 27 points, respectively. Corvin Oprea used several rebound-and-putback efforts to finish the game with 22, and Harrison Ingram once again eclipsed 10 assists to go along with 8 rebounds and a thunderous dunk over Prestonwood’s 6’11” post player. Tate Laczkowski also made a pair of clutch threes to help the Marksmen secure a 92-82 victory. In the alumni game the following day, Tate Laczkowski continued knocking down shot after shot. His 7 makes from beyond the arc rendered him the game’s leading scorer and earned his team a 17-point lead after three quarters. However, the alums refused to be outlasted by their younger counterparts. With the scoreboard reset for two additional quarters of competitive fervor, the alums were determined to show they still had a little something 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

left in the tank. Will Dickson ‘10 and his former Marksman brother, Davo, each knocked down late-game 3’s, and classmates Reece Rabin ‘18 and Jimmy Rodriguez ‘18 turned defense into offense with some timely transition scores. With seconds remaining, formerLion-athlete-turned-faculty-member Tim Mank rebounded a miss and scored to give the alums a 1-point win. It was a great way to finish the first alumni game played in the newly-renovated Spencer Gym, where memories of yesteryear have been brought to life in a whole new way. The Lions were back on the road at Faith Family Academy in South Dallas on January 7th. The defending UIL 4A state champs started the game with a high-flying alley-oop dunk that excited a big crowd on-hand for their “Teddy Bear Toss,” a fundraiser donating stuffed animals to Scottish Rite. That play was the first of a handful of highlights that made for an exciting first half. A number of Faith Family players have scholarship offers from a variety of highranking college programs, but St. Mark’s talented trio of Colin Smith, Harrison Ingram, and Andrew Laczkowski each recorded over 20 points to propel the Lions to a convincing 81-59 victory. The next day, St. Mark’s traveled to Lovejoy. Another boisterous crowd showed up, and the Lions saw a slim half-time lead turn into a 1-point deficit midway through the 3rd quarter. However, the boys in navy and gold strung together several consecutive scores that were capped by Harrison Ingram’s half-court buzzer-beater to forge a 9-point lead heading into the final frame. In the end, St. Mark’s won the game 67-61. Sophomore Tate Laczkowski had one of the stronger games of his young career (13 points), thanks in part to 3 of 4 shooting from behind the arc. 29

On Tuesday, 1/14, the Lions traveled to Cedar Hill for a contest against Trinity Christian. The sophomore trio of Colin Smith, Tate Laczkowski, and Corvin Oprea combined for 22 points and 11 rebounds to forge a 5-point lead at halftime. The game remained close until mid-way through the 4th quarter, when SM strung together several tough defensive stands to press the lead into double-digits and ultimately secure a 67-56 victory. Harrison Ingram finished the game with a double-double (17 points and 12 rebounds). On January 17th, St. Mark’s opened their conference schedule with a trip to Trinity Valley. Corvin Oprea started the game on fire, notching 17 firsthalf points and helping the team to an incredible 42-point first quarter burst. Junior Jake Laufenberg dished out 5 assists while collecting 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Additionally, Harrison Ingram turned in another triple-double (14 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists) and had the big crowd highly entertained with 4 monstrous dunks that included a rim-rocking windmill and a beautiful alley-oop from Colin Smith, who had a PHENOMENAL game: Smith drained 9 three-pointers on his way to a careerhigh 42 points!! What a start for the Lions in SPC play!!! The next week consisted of 3 important games. On 1/22, the team played at Cistercian. The 5 sophomores on the team all scored in double digits: Colin Smith led the way with 24, Corvin Oprea and Noah Smith each had 16, and Caleb Vanzant and Tate Laczkowski posted 10 apiece. The Lions won the game by a final score of 95-60. On 1/24, St. Mark’s hosted Bishop Lynch. The 1st Friday night home game of the season made for a boisterous atmosphere, and junior Harrison Ingram used the crowd’s momentum to get things started with some hot shooting that included 30

a buzzer-beating NBA 3-pointer. At halftime, Ingram was honored for scoring the 1,000th point of his career during the team’s superb showing at the American Airlines Center back in November. Ingram finished Friday night’s game with a team-high 19 points, and the senior trio of Eddie Raj, Taylor Hopkin, and Camp Collins overcame exhausting all-state performances for their respective choir/band to help the team seal a 75-51 victory. The following day, the Marksmen club headed north to Oklahoma City for a bout with Casady. The Lions started slowly but overcame an early 10-point deficit thanks to explosive performances from Colin Smith and Harrison Ingram. Knowing full well that this game would likely determine the North Zone’s #1 seed, Smith exploded for 27 points and Ingram for 28 points, 17 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 blocks. Noah Shelby made multiple 3’s for the 3rd consecutive game since returning from an injury, and St. Mark’s used a fabulous defensive 3rd quarter to ultimately win the game 73-63. On Friday, 1/31, Spencer Gym was packed for a bout featuring the only two undefeated teams remaining in the SPC – St. Mark’s and Greenhill. Neither team shot the ball well early, but St. Mark’s defensive pressure smothered the Hornets en route to a 15-3 lead after one quarter. That margin expanded to 18 at halftime and remained 18 at the final buzzer. Colin Smith had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Harrison Ingram also made it to double digits in limited playing time, scoring 11 to go along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Tate Laczkowski connected on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc and added 6 rebounds and 4 steals to his 11-point effort. Caleb Vanzant came off the bench to score 4 points and collect 3 rebounds, as well as a pair of steals. st. mark’s school of texas

The next night, the Lions hosted Fort Worth Country Day. Sophomores Noah Shelby and Corvin Oprea each scored 12 1st-half points, and Andrew Laczkowski, in his first weekend back from an injury, posted 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. A host of others joined the barrage, including freshman Isaac Bird (7 points), juniors Jake Laufenberg (7 points) and Luke Annett (5 points), and seniors Camp Collins and Taylor Hopkin (5 points each). The aforementioned Caleb Vanzant led the team in rebounding (9), while Hopkin and fellow senior, Aaron Thorne, gathered 7 and 5 rebounds, respectively to move the squad to 5-0 in SPC play. In their final week of regular season play, St. Mark’s completed its 2nd consecutive undefeated sweep of North Zone conference opponents. First, the Lions traveled to Oakridge, where Harrison Ingram and Colin Smith lit up the scoreboard in the first half, combining for 30 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Caleb Vanzant also knocked down a pair of buckets to give the Lions a 21-point halftime lead. Oakridge made a 3rd-quarter run, but 9 Marksmen scored in the 2nd half with Ingram & Smith again leading the way (17 more points between them) and Corvin Oprea also contributing 10. Junior Luke Annett stuffed the stat sheet, as well, with multiple rebounds, assists, and steals. Final score, St. Mark’s 97, Oakridge 76. Friday, January 7th, was senior night in Spencer Gymnasium. ESD was the opponent, and the 5 Lions seniors, Aaron Thorne, Eddie Raj, Camp Collins, Taylor Hopkin, and Andrew Laczkowski, dominated the 1st quarter. Taylor Hopkin and Camp Collins (who both flashed their artistic abilities with marvelous renditions of the Star-Spangled Banner prior to recent home games) scored inside and out, 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

combining for 15 points on 3 of 3 shooting from beyond the arc. Eddie Raj also knocked down a 3 and notched several steals, assists, and rebounds. And Aaron Thorne scored a tough bucket in the paint and gathered 4 gritty rebounds. The most impressive aspect of the seniors’ dominant outing, however, was the defense, which held ESD scoreless for the first 7 minutes. At halftime, each of the seniors was celebrated for their amazing careers. Then the Lions began to selflessly work together to feature senior Andrew Laczkowski, who scored a game-high 21 points and book-ended his performance with 2 spectacular dunks. Reaching 21 pushed Andrew over the 2,000-point mark for his career. No other player in the history of St. Mark’s rich basketball program has been recorded as surpassing the prestigious 2,000-point plateau. What an incredible accomplishment for #14 and the entire program!! Greenhill was the host site for the 201920 SPC tournament. As the North Zone’s undefeated #1 seed, St. Mark’s had a bye on Thursday, January 13th but then played an afternoon game on 1/14 against Kinkaid. St. Mark’s jumped out to an immediate 18-2 lead, proving they would be a force to be reckoned with all tournament long. Harrison Ingram posted 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists in the 1st half alone. Colin Smith scored 10 points in the 3rd quarter, and fellow classmate, Noah Shelby, had 10 in the 4th, as the Marksmen ultimately won the game 75-52. The semifinal game that evening featured a rematch with Episcopal High School, who returned all the major pieces from a squad that ended SM’s championship hopes a year prior. Both rosters consisted of multiple playmakers being courted by some of the best college teams in the country, and those talented individuals all 31

came out firing throughout an evenly played 1st half. During the 3rd quarter, however, EHS took advantage of a cold shooting spell and forged a 7-point lead midway through the frame. The Lions called a timeout, regrouped, and went on the attack for a 15-0 run that was built on active defense, several 3-point makes by sharpshooters Noah Shelby and Corvin Oprea, and a thunderous, rim-rocking dunk by Colin Smith that seemed to change the complexion of the game. Sensational plays by the savvy Harrison Ingram and Andrew Laczkowski extended the lead from there. The Lions closed out the 4th quarter with grit, resulting in a 56-47 win for St. Mark’s. Saturday’s championship game would bring a different sort of opponent. 2-time defending champion Houston Christian was small but extremely quick. Great shooting abounded for the 3rd Houston team the Lions would have to vanquish in as many games if they wanted to snap a 12-year streak of not hoisting the SPC trophy. Employing a similarly aggressive defensive approach as the latter portion of the semifinal game, the Lions were the initiators from the tip. The team’s first offensive possession was a work of art, as every player touch the ball, and Harrison Ingram knocked down an open 3 to get things rolling. Ingram, Andrew Laczkowski, and Colin Smith seemed to have a fire in their eye that would not be denied,

32

creating extra possessions with furious defense, rebounding, and rim attacking. Houston Christian would never lead in a game that opened with a 17-2 margin favoring the Lions. Sophomore Tate Laczkowski came off the bench to connect on a pair of immediate 3’s, and Noah Shelby could not be contained, as he distributed several assists and led the Lions in scoring with 19 for the game. Isaac Bird proved his superstar potential, unleashing his speed and toughness to lock down 3 of the conference’s best guards. A 26-point halftime margin only widened, as the Lions were hitting on all cylinders. The team connected on 16 3-pointers, thanks in part to strong contributions from Caleb Vanzant, Luke Annett, and Jake Laufenberg. The script couldn’t have been much sweeter, as the Lions’ five seniors got to finish the game on the floor together. Veterans Camp Collins, Taylor Hopkin, Eddie Raj, Aaron Thorne, and Andrew Laczkowski were mobbed by the massive crowd on hand at center court as the final buzzer sounded. What a way to finish one of the greatest seasons put together by one of the greatest teams in the history of St. Mark’s basketball! From overcoming the loss of a gym to cutting down the nets at SPC, the resilient team of 2019-20 never stopped relying on one another to etch their names in the history books. What an incredible group of players! What an incredible story!

As has become customary, St. Mark’s began the season somewhat inauspiciously, due in large part to prioritizing player assessment and process over tactics and results. Nevertheless, a four-game losing streak (Bishop Lynch, Kinkaid, Casady, ESD) after beginning with a couple of wins (Prestonwood Christian, Home School) was cause for concern. In mid-December, the Lions defeated a battle-worn Greenhill side, which did wonders to bolster confidence. As the holiday approached, St. Mark’s defeated Home School Athletic Association for a second time to finish with a .500 record at the break. Ironically, the Lions would experience defeat only twice more for the remainder of the season. 36

Victories over TCA and Parish in early January provided momentum for St. Mark’s as they embarked on the arduous journey that is the SPC counter season. It appeared that the weather would be the early victor of the counter season as numerous matches would be canceled and rescheduled on several occasions. The Lions made quick work of Trinity Valley when play finally resumed in the second half of the month. The Lions were then granted great good fortune when Cistercian reluctantly agreed to play at St. Mark’s because weather had made the Hawks’ field unplayable and the window for rescheduling had all but closed. St. Mark’s played well throughout the first half and could easily have been ahead by four goals were it st. mark’s school of texas

not for the Lions’ poor finishing and the Hawks’ strong goalkeeping. Cistercian was content to absorb pressure throughout the match until an opportunity presented itself on a set piece in the last quarter hour. Cistercian left jubilant with their one goal shutout while St. Mark’s remained despondent. Unfortunately for St. Mark’s, their next match, hosted by a very talented Casady team, did not provide respite or redemption. The Lions effort was valiant; however, the Cyclones proved to be the better team on that day, amassing a 3-1 victory. With only three points from three matches, St. Mark’s would be chasing points for the remainder of the season in a quest for a coveted bye. There were positives that were born from the two defeats. The Lions own arrogance and naivete were as much to blame for the Cistercian debacle as the solid game plan of the Hawks. Despite being outplayed in Oklahoma, St. Mark’s did not totally succumb to the Cyclones, and it required a goal of incomparable quality on the part of Casady to defeat St. Mark’s. Now, in the face of adversity, St. Mark’s refined its style and began playing some of its most complete soccer of the year, all the while getting the results necessary to advance up the table. On Senior Night, the Lions defeated TAPPS contender, Trinity Christian Academy before resuming counter play. An intense, 1-0 victory over Greenhill was followed the next day with a solid, 3-1 defeat of Country Day, resulting in a six-point 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

weekend that moved St. Mark’s into contention. A convincing 5-1 victory at Oakridge, and a threegoal shutout of ESD saw the Lions through to a third seed in the north zone. The Lions were unable to earn a bye. When the tournament pairings were determined, it was evident that St. Mark’s faced a daunting task in their quest for an SPC championship. Because of weather, all four of the preliminary matches of the SPC tournament were hosted by St. Mark’s. The Lions (N3) defeated the Spartans of St. Stephens (S6) by a score of 3-0. Their reward for victory was an appointment with four-time SPC reigning champion, Episcopal High School, the second seed in the south zone. Playing at Greenhill, the Lions struck early on a counter attack, catching the Knights off guard in the eighth minute. Episcopal responded with a goal of their own midway through the first half; however, in the closing ten minutes of the half, St. Mark’s scored twice more. Forced to chase the game, Episcopal played very aggressively in the opening minutes of the second half. St. Mark’s weathered the storm, and countered to create a very open, attacking match that saw both teams create opportunities and miss scoring chances. The Lions maintained status quo and, to the surprise of many, earned a berth in the semifinal. St. Mark’s played top-seeded Casady in the semifinal, to whom they had already lost twice. The Lions implausible prolongation appeared to have run its course as a third loss 37

to Casady looked eminent when the Cyclones led by two goals after only twenty minutes. Gradually, the Lions earned equal footing with their opponent and their patience was rewarded in the thirty-third minute with a goal that changed the complexion of the match. The Lions now became the aggressor while the Cyclones became more reticent. Ten minutes into the second half a bit of set piece magic brought the match level. St. Mark’s and Casady were clearly playing in an exciting, winner-take-all match that was destined to be a classic. Casady appeared to punch their ticket to the final when they were awarded a penalty kick after the expulsion of the Lions’ goalkeeper within minutes of the final whistle. With no warm-up, St. Marks’ untested reserve keeper saved the penalty (and the Lions’ season) with an incredible demonstration of grace under pressure. Despite playing their third match in 24 hours, the Lions’ fitness and resilience was on display as they gradually dictated more of the play in the subsequent overtimes. The match was determined in penalties. Bolstered by two more saves from the St. Mark’s goalkeeper, all four of the Lions’ spot kicks found the back of the net rendering a fifth one unnecessary. In the final, St. Mark’s faced another team to whom they had lost earlier in the season: Kinkaid, the number one seed from the south zone. Empowered by fanatical support from the student body and school community, and bolstered by burgeoning aplomb, the Lions 38

were set to complete an improbable run of historic proportions. From the opening whistle St. Mark’s set out to dictate play in a match that became increasingly heated. Midway through the opening half, the Lions scored a well-deserved and highly coveted first goal of the match. The onus was firmly on the Falcons to earn the equalizer by whatever means necessary, be it skill or gamesmanship. While both teams mounted several promising attacks, neither seemed to be able to find the back of the net. In the second half, the Falcons were reduced to ten players which increased their desperation, further affecting the tone of the match. The Lions should have put the match away, but they did not, and were punished when Kinkaid was awarded the most dubious of free kicks on the brink of full time. A well-taken free kick fell dangerously at the edge of the goal box and when the melee cleared, Kinkaid had its equalizer. Undaunted, St. Mark’s simply elevated their game to another level. Early in the second overtime, skillful interchanges of combination play earned St. Mark’s the lead. With the crowd heavily in support of the Lions, and the Falcons beginning to succumb to the pressure, the Lions compiled another collection of deft passes resulting in a third goal within a couple of minutes of the final whistle. The Falcons would see another player sent off and the Lions resplendent with jubilation before the referee’s final whistle, signifying a 3-1 Lion victory and an SPC championship. Since the adoption of the current st. mark’s school of texas

tournament format, St. Mark’s became the first team that did not earn a bye to win the championship. While the achievement was a total team effort, it would not have been

possible without the presence of our outstanding seniors: Christian, Reid, Benjamin, Billy, Romil, Alex, Russell, Colin and William.

The Varsity swim team continued its tradition of excellence, culminating with a phenomenal performance at the SPC Championships. This year we had another large team, 41 men strong. Our swimmers did an amazing job this season! They started the season with a strong performance at the SM Invite, dominating all other schools. We won the meet against HP by the largest margin ever. We also had the closest result against the 9 times 6A State Champions and national Champions, Southlake-Carroll. Our team emerged victorious in every

home meet. We had 9 swimmers making the Century Club. At the SPC Championships held at the LISD Westside Natatorium, St. Mark’s showed exemplary team chemistry, and magnificent acrossthe-board performance to secure a first-place finish. Our boys posted 95% best times in a Championship meet, making this one of the best team performances in our school’s swimming history. The Lions began the SPC meet with an ideal start from the 200 Medley Relay team of Jerry Fox (backstroke), Jack Palmer (breastroke), Ryan Park

(butterfly), and Leo Ohannessian (freestyle) winning the event with a time of 1:38.24 and dropping 2.76 seconds off of their best time. After strong individual swims from Ryan Park in the 200 Free (4th Place, 1:45.96), David Yang in the 200 IM (6th Place, 2:01.68), and Leo Ohannessian in the 50 Free (6th place, 22.30), St. Mark’s held onto their lead, but St. John’s was closing in as well as Kinkaid and St. Stephen’s not far behind. With 6th place finishes from Jack Palmer, Leo Ohanessian, and Jerry Fox in the 100 Fly (53.29), 100 Free (48.78), and 500 Free (4:58.68) respectively as well as a 4th place finish in the 500 Free by Ryan Park (4:53.68), the Lions continued to add to their total points, but the 9 points that St. John’s received from their 1st place diver combined with their continued success in those individual events had given them a narrow lead over St. Mark’s. In the second relay event, the 200 Yard Free, the competition was fierce and, despite a 2 second improvement in time, the Lions team of Daniel Wu, Lee Schlossler, Odran Fitzgerald, and David Li placed 4th (1:31.11). Before the last individual event of the 100 Breast, St. John’s had widened their lead to 11 points, and the Lions required a phenomenal performance in the event to close the gap. Rising to the high-pressure occasion, the team delivered with Jack Palmer taking 42

1st place (59.81), Sean Zhao taking 5th Place (1:03.05) and a remarkable swim from David Yang to drop 4.38 seconds off his best time to secure 3rd place (1:01.13). With those incredible performances, St. Mark’s reclaimed the lead from St. John’s by 2 points going into the final event, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. With the Championship on the line, the team of David Li, Ryan, Park, Jerry Fox, and Leo Ohannessian rose to the occasion with excellent swims all-around of 49.71, 48.48, 48.82, and 47.05 respectively. That swim beat their previous best time by a huge 6.69 seconds, but more importantly they narrowly edged out the St. John’s relay team by less than a second (3:14.06 by St. Mark’s vs. 3:14.62 by St. John’s) to secure 2nd place in the event and secure the Championship. Final Point Totals: • 1st – St. Mark’s – 91 • 2nd – St. John’s – 86 • 3rd – Kinkaid – 84 • 4th – St. Stephen’s – 67

St. Mark’s was victorious in all the matches wrestled, we won seven by way of pin. We forfeited two weight classes, the light and heavy weight categories. On 14 December 2019, we wrestled at the Bishop Lynch Tri-State Wrestling Tournament. Overall, we took 5th out of 10 Teams, which was good for a team wrestling only ten out of the fourteen weight classes in the Varsity Division. In this tough tournament, we had eight out of eleven place winners in the top four at the Varsity level. Overall, we took 7th out of 20 Teams, which was stacked with some of the top Texas’ 6A and 5A public school wrestling. As a team, we improved by one position from last year’s tournament. Junior Co-Captain Cooper Ribman was the only Marksman to earn the Champion title. Junior Reid Fundis won 4th place, and Sophomores Sal 45

Abbasi and Elijah Ellis both won their consolation finals match, earning them third-place medals. On 3 and 4 January, five Marksmen travelled to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the nationally renowned Prep Slam at Holy Innocents Preparatory School. Sophomore Elijah Ellis was knocked out in the Championship round of 32 and Sophomores Jedidiah Kim, Sal Abbasi, and Juniors Cooper Ribman and Jackson Fair were knocked out in the championship round of 16. The good news was that all wrestlers made it to the second day of competition. The bad news was the C. Ribman re-injured himself and had to medically disqualify from the rest of the tournament. J. Kim and S. Abbasi were knocked out in the first round of consolations and J. Fair and E. Ellis were bested in the second round of consolations. As a team with only five out of fourteen weight classes, we were 27th out of 46 teams from across the country. On 11 January, St. Mark’s Wrestling competed in the Dallas Independent School District Wrestling Open at Hillcrest High School. As the only Independent school in the tournament, the challenge was tough. Also, missing three Varsity Wrestlers due to injury, debate, and a math competition, it made the task even tougher. Due to grit and determination, we finished the tournament in fifth place as a team. We had three wrestlers entered in the Junior Varsity tournament, and all three did us proud. Junior Reid Fundis won his weight class, and Stice Neuhoff won third place. Newcomer and Freshman Will Spencer won his first match of the season, but fell one victory from placing. In the Varsity tournament, we had seven of fourteen weight classes represented, and six of seven wrestlers placed in the top four of their brackets. 46

Junior and Co-Captain Jackson Fair and Sophomore Elijah Ellis captured the Championship titles, while Freshman Hayward Metcalf, Sophomore Jedidiah Kim, and Junior Mike Mendoza came home with third place medals. Sophomore Enoch Ellis rounded out the place winners with his fourth-place finish. St. Mark’s Wrestling wrestled at the Prep State Dual Tournament hosted by Bishop Lynch High School on 18 January 2020. This tournament had the best SPC and TAPPs wrestling teams in the State of Texas. St. Mark’s placed 7th out of 16 Wrestling Teams. Team highlight was beating Fort Worth All Saints 54 to 35, and Oklahoma Casady 48 to 18; however, our loss to Trinity Christian Academy in the 5th through 8th place pool solidified our 7th place standing. This tournament had some of the best DIV VI-A and Prep Schools in the area. Due to illnesses/injuries, Orchestra State, and Debate participation, we only had four Varsity wrestlers and five Junior Varsity wrestlers compete. Senior Co-Captain Jackson Fair fell one match shy of the placing round on the Varsity side. On the Junior Varsity side, Freshmen Stice Neuhoff and Ross Cunningham both placed fourth. St. Mark’s Wrestling wrestled in the Texas Prep State Wrestling Championship on 1 February 2020 st. mark’s school of texas

at St. Thomas HS in Houston. Over 200 wrestlers from 22 SPC and TAPPs wrestling teams competed in this year’s Prep State tournament, and St. Mark’s placed 8th as a team, moving up three places from last year’s 11th place finish. Co-captain and Sophomore Elijah Ellis (195lbs weight class) won his first State title by pinning St. John’s Senior and first seed in this weight category, Jack Curtin. Other notable finishes: Freshman Hayward Metcalf (120lbs) 4th Place Sophomore Sal Abbasi (138lbs) 3rd Place Both Elijah Ellis and Sal Abbasi qualified for the Prep National Wrestling Championship by placing in top three of their weight classes. Prep Nationals is held at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. St. Mark’s Wrestling hosted and wrestled at the Southwest Preparatory Wrestling Championship on 15 February 2020. There were ten wrestling teams comprised of teams from the State of Texas and Oklahoma. St. Mark’s placed third as a team, a one place improvement from the 2019 tournament.

In total, 9 out of 10 St. Mark’s Wrestlers placed at the SPC Tournament: 4th at 106lbs – Freshman Shreyan Daulat 2nd at 120lbs – Freshman Hayward Metcalf 4th at 145lbs – Freshman Stice Neuhoff 4th at 152lbs – Sophomore Enoch Ellis 2nd at 160lbs – Junior Jackson Fair 3rd at 170lbs – Freshman Ross Cunningham 3rd at 182lbs – Junior Drew Woodward 1st at 195lbs – Sophomore Elijah Ellis 4th at 220lbs – Junior Mike Mendoza As a team, we handily won third place. Last year we placed fourth as a team, barely missing third place by one point to Casady. Of note, three of our tough wrestlers were not in the lineup due to injuries (C. Ribman, J. Kim, and S. Abbasi). There are no seniors on our team, and next year will be even better. This tournament was a great reflection of focused training and teamwork.

Sophomore and co-captain Elijah Ellis (195lbs) won his weight class with a significant pin at the end of the second period of the Championship bout. Junior co-captain Jackson Fair and Freshman Hayward Metcalf both placed second; these three wrestlers won AllSPC accolades for the Lions’ 2019-2020 season.

Playing games in late February is tough enough due to the cold and rain, but unfinished field construction from the October tornado added a new, challenging twist to the start of the spring season for the 2020 squad. Often relegated to an indoor facility for many of our preseason workouts and tryout days, the Lion baseball team charged full steam ahead, concentrating instead on what they could control.

keep good attitudes with their inspired play throughout the season. Sharing captain responsibilities with the two seniors, Juniors Jake Daniels (IF/P) and Daniel Sanchez (P/IF) were a sound one-two punch on the mound, in the field, and at the plate. Other junior returners included Abe Echt (C) and Alez Zuch (OF/P), who solidified the lineup with their quality at-bats and solid defensive play while Marlon Henderson worked his way back into the outfield rotation after dealing with a season-long shoulder issue the previous year.

Senior captains Mason Rareshide (IF/P), a rare four-year letterman, and Aaron Thorne (OF), a threeyear letterman, emerged as reliable team leaders who rallied the underclassmen to work hard and 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

There were a plethora of newcomers to the Varsity team this spring, led by Juniors Luke Annett (OF), Jacob Bell (IF/P), James Petrikas (IF/P), and Klyde Warren (P/OF). Cracking into a Varsity lineup is a difficult task, and I am proud of all four of these juniors for their valuable and varied contributions on the diamond. Toby Barrett (IF/ OF), Cole Norman (IF/P/C), and Camden Reeves (IF/P) provided a legitimate triple threat from the sophomore class; all three players entered St. Mark’s as freshmen and have been excellent additions to our school community. Speaking of freshmen, we were fortunate to have Silas Hosler (IF/P) join the Varsity team after shining at the plate and in the field during tryouts. The baseball team’s season began and ended with a cancellation: one (vs. ILT-Keller/Saginaw) due to ongoing field construction and the other (rest of season) because of the coronavirus pandemic. Starting with Dallas Christian, the Lions played seven consecutive away contests. Although competitive in the first few innings, St. Mark’s fell to a more seasoned Dallas Christian team after unsteady pitching and a few costly errors by the Lions in the middle of the game plated multiple Chargers. The next game was played at Shelton’s superb, brand new turf field. Facing a tough right-hander, the Lions were up for the challenge and managed to scratch a few runs while locking down the Shelton offense for their first win. The following day, the team ventured over to Parish Episcopal for a difficult matchup 52

with the Panthers. Even though Lions hitters put up a valiant effort, the pitching staff could not stave off Parish’s formidable offensive attack. With their record at 1-2, St. Mark’s traveled to Dallas Kimball for a threegame set at the annual Bryan Martin tournament sponsored by Hillcrest. After securing a two-run lead in the last inning, the Lions defense faltered, committing several egregious errors before succumbing to a heartbreaking one-run loss. However, St. Mark’s rebounded with a somewhat shaky win in a low-scoring affair against counter foe Cistercian. In the final tournament game, the Lions bats were stifled by the crafty, El Paso Bowie right-hander, resulting in another close loss. In the week before Spring Break, St. Mark’s played two tough games against TCA and THESA. Capitalizing on walks and a few timely hits, TCA distanced itself in the middle innings from St. Mark’s, which was unable to get much generated offensively or defensively that day. In the final contest, which was the Lions’ first home game of the spring, all fifteen St. Mark’s players got on the field in front of our spirited home fans. After exchanging leads several times, THESA was able to thwart a lateinning rally by the Lions offense. This ended up being our last game of the season, and the baseball team would like to send a special thank you to our parent community, athletic department, grounds crew, and training staff for their tireless efforts and unwavering support. st. mark’s school of texas

The 2020 St. Mark’s Crew season kicked-off with an incredible turnout of new rowers, almost no practice time on the water, and a lot of enthusiasm. The enthusiasm for the 2020 season was well founded given the previous season’s performance at the Central Youth Championships, where we earned two bids to the Youth National Championships; a 13th in the nation finish for the Varsity 4x at the Youth Nationals, and an even more impressive 8th place finish in a 2x at the storied Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR). The Head of the Charles Regatta was a new experience for St. Mark’s rowers. The 55th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta was held on the Charles River in Boston and it welcomed 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

762 clubs, with 2263 entries across all boat categories with a total of over 12,000 competitors. In many ways, the HOCR is more intimidating that Youth Nationals due to the unfamiliar 4800 meter course, and the breadth and depth of the competition. Christian Duessel and Billy Lockhart started the head race as the last entry to take to the course and despite course violations by other crew, costing them precious time, they passed several competitors on the water to come in 8th. Their strong finish guaranteed an invitation for a St. Mark’s 2x for the fall of 2020. The first regatta of the 2020 season was the Heart of Texas Regatta on Ladybird Lake in Austin. During two-day event 24 Marksmen were entered in 19 55

events. The team did exceptionally well in qualifying boats to advance to finals. Out of 10 events, Marksmen qualified for finals in 9, advancing 13 boats out of 19 entries to finals. The Lions won a silver medal and 4 bronze medals over the weekend. Silver Medal: Varsity 2V 4x - Drake Elliot ‘22, Evan McGowan ‘22, Alexander Emery ‘21, Paul Valois ‘22 Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 4x - Christian Duessel ‘20, Jack Trahan ‘20, Blake Hudspeth ‘21, Billy Lockhart ‘20 Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 2x - Christian Duessel ‘20, Billy Lockhart ‘20 Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 1x - Blake Hudspeth ‘21 Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 2- - Christian Duessel ‘20, Billy Lockhart ‘20 Riding high on their successes in Austin the team was determined to train hard the two weeks before Spring Break to prepare for the a “2k.” The 2000-meter test on the ergometer is an all-out effort which challenges a rower’s intensity, strength, will to win, and endurance. The results of the test are a sure measure of mental toughness as well as a solid benchmark for improvement in physical conditioning. The March 12th 2k would be a grueling task before the welcomed rest of Spring Break. The team slowly assembled in the erg room, warming up individually and doing their best to be as hyped as possible before the first stroke. As individual rowers started and finished their 2k’s it became apparent it would be a record day for almost all the team. Novice and veteran alike rallied around to cheer each other in the most demanding and lonely moments of the test. The energy in the room crescendoed as personal records 56

were smashed left and right. For the novices it was their first 2k test and the team’s enthusiasm and support of their best effort was palpable. At the end of the day the team had 9 athletes who broke the 7-minute barrier. For the last decade the team has never had more than 5 rowers in one season who accomplished a sub 7 2k. It was not long after the elation of moment had settled in that it was announced the school would change dramatically with efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Spring Break ended with a new reality and a new routine for all Marksmen. Staying unified as community became the greatest challenge when that very community was asked to stay apart but unify, they did. To keep season thriving the crew team joined the Concept2 World Erg Challenge, a virtual challenge with 8843 competitor’s logging hundreds of thousands of meters on the erg. Starting March 15th, St. Mark’s rowers joined for the sheer sake of camaraderie and the fitness that comes with continued training when all of the season’s competitions had been canceled. Twenty boys “rowed” over 2,412,065 meters on an erg during the month of the online competition. Ian Lin logged the most meters during this time with 308,415 meters followed by Tomek Marczewski with 300,089 meters. Evan McGowan, Buck Elliott and Soham Verma all logged over 200k meters. It was a true display of leading by example. The reward for the team’s efforts is the satisfaction of knowing that while other athletes are taking a break, Marksmen are working to be their best. st. mark’s school of texas

The MVP award this year is unique in that it is being given to the rowers of the Class of 2020. The season has also been unique enough, but this group of young men has shaped the spirit and character of the crew team meaningfully and to lasting effect. They have brought a spirit of brotherhood and work ethic that is unsurpassed. The entire team thanks them for their years of effort, support, and leadership. St. Mark’s has had a challenging year to be sure, but all indications point to the fact that this community and these boys are strong in character and strong in will. I would like to thank the parents who are always at the ready to make the crew season fun while

providing an environment in which the boys can focus on their pursuits and passions. Stacy and Andrew Elliott as well as Sally and Brent Hudspeth organized our regatta as well as the team dinner and Saturday practice snacks. It is these rituals which create an environment where the team can relax and bond as a brotherhood. For your support I am grateful. I would also like to thank the Athletic Department for their constant support. Sean Lissemore and Josh Friesen, I continue to be indebted to you for the things you do for the program. While the season did not finish as any of us has expected there is still great untapped potential and hope at St. Mark’s and the Crew program in particular.

An experienced senior group combined with talented underclassmen to generate a 2020 golf team that entered the season with high hopes of capturing an SPC crown. The squad was granted incredible practice opportunities at two prestigious clubs – Trinity Forest and Northwood. As a result, players were able to hit the ground running and make tremendous progress right away. Unfortunately, the season was cut short after only two tournaments. However, in those two events, the Lions demonstrated why they had every reason to anticipate a successful lateseason run. On February 24th, St. Mark’s began its season with the Dallas Invitational Tournament hosted by Jesuit at Brookhaven Country Club. Wind was a factor throughout the day for the 58

Returning varsity senior captains, Romil Mathur & Camp Collins, were eager to resume their championship ways, having just completed title runs for their soccer and basketball teams, respectively. Mathur finished with an 81. Junior, Rex Corey, posted one of his best scores as a varsity golfer, shooting an 83. Three freshmen splashed onto the scene for the navy & gold: James Thomson (88), Logan Johnson (81), and Tommy Zheng (80) all had very impressive debuts to help land both Lions squads in the top five in a strong twenty-one-team field. SM’s third-place group of Johnson, Mathur, sophomore Mac McKenzie (who posted an 85), sophomore Anashay Monga (91), and senior Camp Collins finished st. mark’s school of texas

with a team score of 338. The 5th place team of Zheng, Corey, Thomson, senior Will Rocchio (89) and senior Tony D’Apice finished with a 340. In the tournament’s JV division, sophomore George Warren led the way with an 89, while sophomore Jodie Thompson (91), junior Gabe Bines (92), freshman Matthew Fan (93), and junior John Hubbard rounded out a team score of 340, which placed 7th out of 17 teams. On March 8th and 9th, ten players traveled to Bastrop, Texas for a two-day tournament at Wolfdancer Golf Club at the Lost Pines Resort. The event was the first SPC precursor of sorts in that representatives from many peer schools from Houston drove north to compete. Senior Romil Mathur and freshman Tommy Zheng each posted a 78 to lead the Lions in the first round, and freshmen Logan Johnson battled through the second day’s rainy conditions to put up a 79. Those 3 players, along with freshman James Thomson and senior Camp Collins, all had 2-day totals of 170 or better to help SM’s two five-man squads score 663 and 683. The 663 was good enough for 3rd place honors in the tournament. In addition to tournament play against other schools, team members met daily at various courses across the metroplex to spend time together honing different aspects of their game and competing against one another. Among those not already mentioned were firsttime SM golfers Benjamin Gravel, Spencer Burke, and Alex Loftus, who demonstrated tremendous improvement during these sessions! Second-year contributors Jake Robinowitz, Jackson Lutz, Dylan Dropkin, Sai Thirunagari, Trevor Crosnoe, William Aniol, and Rajan Joshi and third-year veteran Luke Piazza also invested quality hours to make themselves and the team stronger at every opportunity. 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

So many people were responsible for paving the way for another successful season of Lions golf. Athletic Director, Sean Lissemore, in his first year, supported the program in absolutely every way possible. Associate AD, Josh Friesen, was once again spectacular assisting in scheduling and travel logistics. Parents – especially those of seniors – dove in head-first for the good of the group, generously providing whatever they could to make the season fun and fulfilling. The generosity of courses around the area, particularly Northwood and Trinity Forest, gave players the opportunity to challenge themselves and prepare to compete admirably. In every regard, the community supported St. Mark’s golf and allowed a tradition of excellence to flourish more than ever. Finally, the seniors were the heart and soul of this team. Alex Loftus brought an eager enthusiasm to the team in his one year of play. Will Rocchio, in just two short years, distinguished himself as an impact contributor and captain because of his stellar leadership and sensational devotion to the game. Four-year leader Tony D’Apice emerged as one of the most vibrant and wellliked/respected teammates because of a positive presence that consistently brought out the very best in everyone around him. Over the course of four years, Camp Collins evolved from a relatively inexperienced player his ninth grade season into a tournament contender, whose intimidating power and communication excellence earned him the two-year title of captain. Finally, Romil Mathur finishes his four years in the navy and gold as one of the program’s most decorated in recent years: a medalist at numerous tournaments, including last year’s SPC finale, team MVP and two-time captain, Mathur was feared across the conference 59

for his unshakeable consistency, putting prowess, and exceedingly calm but confident demeanor. This magnificent group will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Each young man leaves an indelible mark on the program, and

the foundation they have selflessly built upon will continue to elevate future teams for many years to come. Thank you for incredible examples that inspire us all!

The 2020 Lacrosse season consisted of 5 games, until COVID-19 changed life for all of us. The team was 4-1 and about to go to North Carolina on spring break to play 3 games when everything shut down. At the conclusion of the season the Lions were 2-0 in SPC play and 1-0 in THSLL North District play and poised to make a run both for an SPC Championship and THSLL State Championship.

8th game, but rebounded quickly to defeat Prosper 13-2 in the home opener. In the first THSLL North District counter game the Lions defeated a solid Plano West team 8-6. The Lions then went on the road to Houston where they defeated St. Johns 7-6 and Episcopal 9-8 in dogfights. Certainly there was a lot of work left to do but the team was excited for spring break and ready to keep climbing into the meat of the season and compete.

The Lions opened the season with a hard fought 8-4 loss against Southlake who was playing in their 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

Obviously, the loss of the season has been a bitter disappointment. 61

Our hearts go out to a special senior class that has represented St. Mark’s so well over their career. Midfielders Ryan McCord, Titus McGowan, Charlie Rose, and Colin Campbell along with attackman Luke Evangelist were the foundation of the team’s offense. Carr Urschel,

JD McClain, Colin Williamson, and Paxton Scott commanded the defense, and Wyatt Awtrey provided outstanding depth at the face off x. It has been a pleasure and honor to have you in our program and you will never be forgotten.

Spring season 2020 will be one to remember for St Mark’s tennis team, and especially for the graduating crew. The season began in a new home for the Lions, after having lost all tennis courts to the October 2019 tornado. Last year’s large graduating class had made room for new additions, so half of this year’s roster consisted of new players, who even in a short amount of time, contributed greatly to the team. The Lions completed one friendly match before Spring break, beating rivals ESD 4-1 to open up the season. The match line up included two freshmen, Daniel Ardila and Patrick Flanagan, who each posted their first Varsity win for the school. It was not 64

known at the time that that would be the last match the athletes would get to play this spring. This year, the team will say goodbye three seniors who have been shining examples of spirit and commitment for the last 4 years, and whose absence will be deeply felt: Alex Piccagli, Sid Vattemreddy, and Austin Zang, will all be greatly missed. In addition, the team bids farewell to two more seniors Daniel Ardila and Chris Wang, who both joined this season, yet still made a large impact on the team through their displays of leadership and discipline. st. mark’s school of texas

As the season began, it was very clear that this squad was capable of bringing back an SPC Championship to St. Mark’s. It hadn’t been done since 2013, but this was a team composed of outstanding athletes in every event.

the team better. I feel most sorry for the seniors on the team because they were denied the opportunity to show their talent(s) and end their career on a high note.

This will be also be remembered as the season of “what could have been” as our season ended abruptly, cut short by the virus. It is unfortunate that this happened, but that is reality. I feel sorry for the boys on the team who worked so hard to make themselves and 66

With that being said, here are a few highlights from the 2 meets we did participate in. The season started off with the Greenhill Relays and Lovejoy Invitational. At the Greenhill Relays, Junior Kit Colson led the team with impressive times in the 100m & 200m (10.81 & 21.75). His 200 times improves his #3 time st. mark’s school of texas

on the ALL-TIME list. He also anchored the winning 4x100 and 4x400 Relays. Also enjoying a great weekend was Pablo Arroyo. Pablo, along with a few other distance runners, participated in the Lovejoy Invitational in the 3200m. Pablo produced the #4 ALL-TIME mark with a time of 9:25.67. At that time, it was the #5 mark in the state of Texas. He also came back to Greenhill later that day, won the 1600m and a few minutes later, ran a leg on the winning 4x400 Relay team. Also enjoying a successful day were Tyler Nussbaumer in the 3200m (1st), Colin Bejac in the 100H & 300H (2nd & 2nd), and Sam Eluemunoh in the discus (3rd). St. Mark’s won the meet with a total of 185 points.

2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

The next weekend, we participated in the Volunteer Relays in Arlington. Kit and Pablo again led the team with impressive results. Pablo won the 800m and 1600m in very good times. Andres Arroyo finished 2nd to him in both races. Kit finished 1st in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m with times of 21.76 and 10.80 respectively. Enoch Ellis made his 300 hurdle debut with a 2nd place finish. Michael Vanesko had an outstanding performance in the pole vault with a big PR of 12’ 6”, finishing 2nd. St. Mark’s finished 4th in both the Varsity and Jr. Varsity Divisions. That’s it folks, two meets for the season. Oh, what could have been.

VARSITY & JUNIOR VARSITY Head Coach Mihai Oprea Assistant Coaches Kevin Boone Spencer Dornin Peter Hudak Alex Stankovic A short season of hard work, passion, and high expectations! This season was so different! Cut short due to the World pandemic and the school closure this season ended before Spring Break, lasting only 3 weeks. In this short period our boys achieved a lot. They trained hard, they showed heart and courage, and they defeated all their top rivals in the State. In the Denton Tournament they defeated Flower Mound HS, and Guyer HS. In the Aggieland Tournament they defeated Memorial HS, Jersey Village HS, Strake Jesuit, and the top team from Houston, Foster HS. 2019-2020 Athletic Banquet

Our team was ranked #1 in the State the entire season. We lived with the hope we will be able to defend our Title and send our Seniors away with another State Championship. It was not possible, but we are thankful for the opportunities we had. We are proud of all our achievements and we will be back stronger. The team’s success this year would have not been possible without the amazing support of our wonderful parents. Special thanks to Dr. Richard Honaker for pictures, videos, and tireless help. 69

Our special gratitude goes to our Team Mom, Dr. Laurie Otto.

A world of gratitude to our amazing coaching staff: Spencer Dornin, Peter Hudak, and Aleksandar Stankovic. Simply the best!

ATHLETIC TRAINING STAFF Head Trainer

This was a great year for the Student Athletic Training Program. A diverse collection of student aides from both the Middle and Upper school served the athletic program in many ways. This year, a unique development was the number of students who volunteered their time but were not receiving any academic credit. These students, from both the Middle and Upper schools, sought out ways to serve during the busy school year. These students

served the program by assisting with field set up, administrative tasks, emergency preparedness, and other tasks as needed, while learning about sports medicine from the staff Athletic Trainers and team physicians. The Student Athletic Trainers are an integral part of the athletic program at St. Mark’s. Thanks to the following boys for their outstanding service during this academic year.
