St. Mark’s School of Texas is a non-sectarian, college-preparatory, independent day school for boys in grades one through 12. The 2023-2024 school year began with 914 students enrolled, 152 of whom are Lower School students, 342 of whom are Middle School students and 420 of whom are Upper School students; 97 are seniors. 22 faculty members hold endowed positions including 16 Master Teachers Chairs, five department chairs and the headmaster. A student-teacher ratio of 8:1 fosters a close professional atmosphere in the classroom and on the playing fields. As one of the nation’s leading independent schools, St. Mark’s offers the very best in educational opportunities for students as they prepare for the challenges of college and adult life.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The Charter states that St. Mark’s School is “designed to afford its students wellrounded physical, intellectual, moral and religious training and instruction.” A St. Mark’s education is based upon a foundation of academic rigor, extracurricular involvement, artistic expression and spiritual awareness. The Board of Trustees is committed to a diverse community of teachers and students who share a love of learning and who strive for high levels of achievement.
DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS The academic year is composed of two semesters. Students must successfully complete the equivalent of 18 full-year courses in the Upper School. These courses include but are not limited to the following: four English, three history and social sciences, three laboratory sciences, three mathematics, three foreign language, one fine arts and one elective. Students must also complete two and a half PE/ athletic credits and a total of 60 hours of community service (15 hours annually). All ninth-grade students participate in the Pecos Wilderness Experience. Finally, students must achieve satisfactory completion of the Senior Exhibition, which is the demonstration of a special talent, skill or interest made by each senior to the student body and faculty.
St. Mark’s students maintain a well-balanced academic course load in addition to extracurricular activities and social opportunities. New students may be considered for Advanced Placement classes by consulting with the head of Upper School.
