School Section Warner Hartnett’s Chinese Competition As all sixth graders know, Warner recently had a very important competition called ​China and Me​. We interviewed him, and he gave us a few facts about his competition.

Interviewer: What did you do?

Warner: I took a paper exam, and then I performed on stage with my two-minute speech in Chinese. Then I did a Tai Chi performance.

I: About how many people were there?

W: I’m not sure, but 30-50. I competed against kids in high school and college.

There were no other middle schoolers.

I: How did it go, and what place did you get?

W: It went well, and I got third place.

I: Where was it?

W: It was at UTD’s Confucius Center.

After hearing his responses, we were astounded. How was he able to write an entire speech in Chinese, take a paper exam on Chinese culture, learn Tai Chi in the span of two weeks, compete against kids who were several years older than him, and still get third place?! Congratulations to Warner!

8th Grade Student Council Election The eighth graders will soon be voting on their freshmen student council leaders, and we interviewed Abhi Jain who is running for vice president, and Pranay Sinkre who’s running for student council representative. Here’s our interview with Abhi: Interviewer: Why did you run for Vice President?

Abhi: This is my first year at St. Mark's, and the experience has been encouraging and mesmerizing! I was looking for a way to thank the St. Mark's community for the endless understanding and knowledge. At that moment, we had the class meeting talking about different options for Student Council. I thought about it and finally made my decision that, as time was running out to contribute to St. Mark's, this would be the best opportunity!

I: What are the responsibilities of Vice President?

A: The main job of the Vice President is to consult with the rest of the Student Council about upcoming dances, bake sales, and other events of that sort. A great deal of organization is put into it, as well. The biggest job, however, is to make the Class of 2022 the best!

I: How do you think winning would affect your everyday routine?

A: Any Student Council job requires work both in school and out of school. I would definitely have to add another time slot for my job. My normal schedule is: come to school, go home, do homework, and go to sleep. With student council: come to school, use my free-time to organize upcoming events, go home, work more for Student Council, do homework, and go to sleep. Student Council would have a tremendous effect on my day-to-day life.

I: Please give a description of your poster and why you chose to do it the way you did.

A: I tried to add a funny touch to it on the top by putting, " Chocolate, Pizza, Candy, Now that I have your attention, Vote Abhi for VP." Underneath that, I quoted Newton's Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I put "Vote For Abhi" as the action, and "The Best Freshman Year Yet" as my reaction.

In between, I listed some of my personality traits. I added the first part to add humor. I added Newton's Law to explain myself, what the aim is, and how to have an amazing year. Finally, being new, I put the personality traits to show what type of person I am.

Pranay Sinkre, an 8th grader running for student council representative, was also asked some questions about his campaign. This is the paragraph that he sent back.

I ran for student council representative because the responsibilities seemed very enticing. [If I win] I will attend a weekly meeting to voice my grade's interests. I speak for the student body and my class. I help plan school events. I get to brainstorm ideas for homecoming, the gift drive, and pep rallies. I serve at least one shift at the concession stand during football games, and, I represent the student council when interacting with my classmates. I understand that if I win, it will be a big time commitment, but I am willing to put that time in to help the school that has helped me become the person I am today. In my everyday routine, however, I would probably have to move some practices, but I don't think me winning will affect it too much. My poster shows the quad in black and white and has blue text over some clouds and a sun. It shows the quad because I thought it looked quite professional and my friend, Xander, helped me with the design. I chose the slogan, "For a better day, vote Pranay" because it seemed professional; also, slogans always have to rhyme.

How do I make them stop?

The first thing to do is to talk to your parents about how you’re feeling. Pick the best time…not while they’re on the phone or stressed! Sometimes it’s easiest to talk to parents one on one. Once you’ve got your parent’s attention, help them see what they’re doing and how it is making you feel. Remember, your parents are probably asking because they care a lot about you. If they realize that they are causing you to feel stressed they are likely to be willing to try another approach. Be clear about your feelings when you talk to your parents. For example, you could say, “Mom, when you ask me over and over again if I’ve finished my homework I feel like you don’t trust me and it adds to my stress.” Have a plan in mind before you talk with your parents. Parents love it when you come to them with a solution. You might suggest that you both check over your agenda once together at the end of the night.

Or you might request that your parents only talk to you about test grades when your class grade falls below a certain level. Remember, your parents want you to be happy…and successful – you can work together to help you achieve both!

What should I do if I see people playing games in study hall?

It can be really tempting to tell the study hall proctor when you see someone playing games. After all, you’re following the rules, why shouldn’t they? But before you tell on your classmate, ask yourself, “Who are they hurting?” and “What is my role?” If your classmate’s game playing is distracting you or others from getting work done, then their action is hurting others and it is time to make a report. On the other hand, if the person is only hurting themselves by not getting their own work done, then the only reason to tell the proctor would be to get your classmate in trouble…in other words “tattling.” Be proud of yourself for following the rules. Make the most of your study hall time by worrying less about what others are doing and more about what you can accomplish in the time you have.

Sports Section Champions League Quarter Finals

Liverpool vs. Manchester City​: This series was not very close. In the first leg, Liverpool dominated the game and pulled out a 3-0 victory. The second game was closer, as Manchester City scored in the second minute, but Liverpool came back with two second-half goals, thus knocking out Manchester City and advancing into the next round.

Juventus vs. Real Madrid​: In the first game, Real Madrid cruised to a 3-0 victory as Ronaldo scored two goals, one of which was a bicycle kick. Also, Dybala of Juventus got a red card meaning that he would not be able to play in the second leg. In the second game, Juventus scored two first-half goals, putting the score at 2-0. At the beginning of the second half, Juventus scored another goal, putting the total goal count at 3-3. The game was kept at 3-0, until the ninety-third minute.

There was a penalty kick called against Juventus and their goalkeeper, Buffon, argued. The referee had no tolerance for his protests and gave him a red card.

Ronaldo struck the penalty kick into the net leaving the final score at 3-1. Even though Real Madrid lost the second game, the total score was 4-3 Real, ensuring that Real Madrid advanced.

Sevilla FC vs. Bayern Munich​: In the first leg of this matchup, Sevilla scored in the thirty-second minute, but Jesús Navas of Sevilla scored an own goal in the thirty-seventh minute to tie the game. Bayern then scored in the sixty-eighth minute to put the score at 2-1. The game remained this way until the final whistle.

In the second game, the game remained scoreless and in the ninety-second minute, Correa of Sevilla got a red card. The final score was 0-0, and Bayern advanced to the semi-finals.

Barcelona vs. AS Roma​: In the first leg, Barcelona started strongly. They did not score until Piqué put one in the net in the fifty-ninth minute, but Roma scored two own goals for Barca before Piqué scored, putting Barcelona up 2-0. Piqué’s goal made the game 3-0. Next, Dzeko scored for Roma in the eightieth minute, but Barcelona salvaged another goal in the eighty-seventh minute to win the first game 3-1. In the second leg, Roma put on quite a performance. Starting early, Dzeko scored a goal in the sixth minute. Next, De Rossi finished a penalty putting Roma up 2-0. To finish the game, Manolas scored another goal for Roma in the eighty-second minute. The game ended and the series was tied 4-4, but AS Roma scored more away goals so they advanced to the semis.

NHL Playoffs

Rules: During the NHL playoffs there are sixteen teams, four from each division and eight from each conference. The four divisions are the Central, Pacific, Atlantic, and Metropolitan divisions. The teams play each other in a best of seven game series, and then the winners go to the next round and that repeats until the championship, when the winner of the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference play each other, and whoever wins that series wins a trophy called the Stanley Cup. Usually, every player on the team gets one day with the Stanley Cup before passing it to another teammate. After everyone on the team has gotten a day with the Stanley Cup, it goes to the team headquarters or to their trophy room.

Pacific Division: The Las Vegas Golden Knights swept the Los Angeles Kings 4-0 in their first-round series.

The San Jose Sharks completed a sweep against the Anaheim Ducks, 4-0.

Central Division: The Nashville Predators are beating the Colorado Avalanche closely going into the fifth game, 3-1.

The Winnipeg Jets are beating the Minnesota Wild 3-1 in their first-round matchup.

Metropolitan Division: The Columbus Blue Jackets are barely tied with the Washington Capitals 2-2 in their first-round matchup.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are winning their first-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers 3-1.

Atlantic Division: The Tampa Bay Lightning are beating the New Jersey Devils 3-1 heading into Game 5.

The Boston Bruins are one game away from advancing as they are beating the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 in their first-round matchup.
