Sport Sectio 8th Grade Winter Sports We interviewed five 8th graders about their winter sports, and we got some very interesting results. This is an interview with Jack Bickel, an 8th grade wrestler who has wrestled since 1st grade and has played on the team in both 7th and 8th grade: Interviewer: Since it is both a 7th and 8th grade team, do the 8th graders get to mentor the 7th graders a little? Jack: Yes, and I think it's very cool that we have such a great opportunity to do something like that. Last year, all the 8th graders were very helpful, and they helped me win a few matches. I: When you started in only 1st grade, were there any mentors that kind of helped you start? J: Yes. In 2nd grade my mentor was my senior buddy, Nick. He was an allstate wrestler and he really helped me a lot. I loved going to his meets and watching him. I: What has been one of your favorite wrestling experiences throughout the years? J: When I was in lower school, my parents got a package at the auction for me to be a ‘wrestling captain.’ I got to go to the practices and sit on the bench at some meets. It was very cool! Next we interviewed Peter Orsak and Chase Martin, 8th graders on the basketball team. Peter plays starting guard and has been playing since he was five, and Chase plays starting forward and he’s been playing since he was seven. Interviewer: Did you guys play basketball on the 7th grade team, too?
Peter: Yes, I did. Chase: I wasn’t here in the 7th grade. I: For the 6th graders going into 7th grade, do you choose your sport before your 7th grade year or just before the season? Both: At the end of 6th grade, you will be sat down with your advisor and you will choose which three sports you want to play, or you can do P.E. or tutorial. I: Are there tryouts for all sports, or just certain sports? Both: In basketball there are tryouts to see which team you are on, but in some sports like volleyball and football, there aren’t cuts. Next we interviewed Grant Jackson, who starts as goalkeeper on the 8th grade team and also played for the 7th grade team. He has played soccer for 7 years. When he first started playing soccer, he was a defender, but he was moved to goalkeeper. Here is the interview: Interviewer: Is it a big change from the 7th grade soccer team to the 8th grade soccer team? Grant: Other than losing a player, there is not a big difference. I: Do you practice with the team or do you do seperate goalkeeper practice? G: Considering conditioning and stretching, I practice with the team. However, with most drills, I practice with the backup keeper. I: How is it like playing Friday nights before the varsity team? G: It is very motivational and inspirational. It also makes me want to work harder and be a better goalkeeper.
College Football PLayoff Review
To ring in the new year, we were treated to two college football games this year. One being the Oklahoma vs. Georgia game. Georgia came back from a 3114 deficit to win. If you’re wondering what the downfall of Oklahoma was, then we would say that Georgia finally got their running game together. 1st Quarter Oklahoma won the toss and chose to play defense. Georgia overthrew the ball on third down and had to punt for a threeandout drive. On the next drive Baker Mayfield hit Marquise Brown in the end zone for a 13 yard touchdown. On the next drive of Georgia’s, Sony Michel got open on the left side and Jake Fromm hit him for the 13yard touchdown catchandrun. Rodney Anderson ran for 63 yards on the nest Oklahoma drive, including a 45yard run down the left sideline and a 9yard touchdown for Oklahoma. Mayfield didn’t even need to complete a pass that drive. Georgia went for it on 4th and 4 and failed to convert. 2nd Quarter Anderson broke through the line for a 41 yard Oklahoma TD. Sony Michel brought Georgia back within a score. Georgia’s defense finally got a break. They made the Sooners settle for a field goal. Georgia punted again after a disappointing threeandout. Oklahoma punted right back. On their next drive, though, Oklahoma ran a double reverse (trick play), and Baker Mayfield snuck uncovered into the corner of the end zone, where Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb passed it a few yards into Mayfield’s hands for a trick play TD. Rodrigo Blankenship of Georgia made his career long field goal of 55 yards. 31 Oklahoma, 17 Georgia was the score of halftime. 3rd Quarter
The Georgia defense forced a threeandout to start the second half, and got the ball at the midfield after a good Mecole Hardman punt return. Nick Chubb went 50 yards on Georgia’s first play of the half, breaking tacklers early and then outran the defense for a touchdown And it was suddenly a 7point game again. Sony Michel went 38 yards on thirdandlong, going through a wideopen hole on the right and juking the defense, and made it a tie game, 3131, with 41 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. 4th Quarter Senior Georgia safety Dominck Sanders intercepted Baker Mayfield, and returned it to the 4yard line, giving the offense a chance to score a touchdown and give Georgia its first lead of the game. Jake Fromm hit Javon Wims, the receiver in the end zone, and Wims held on for a 4yard touchdown. Sony Michel fumbles the ball and gives the opposition (Oklahoma) a chance to score. Oklahoma returned the fumble for a 46 yard touchdown. Nick Chubb scored from 2 yards out, making it a tie game. The clock ticks down to 0:00, so it went to overtime. This was the first overtime in Rose Bowl history, a whopping 104 years. Overtime The Oklahoma defense stopped Georgia and makes them settle for a field goal. 4845 Georgia. Oklahoma kicker Austin Seibert made a 33yard field goal to force a second overtime. 48 all. Lorenzo Carter (Georgia defense) blocked a 27yard field goal in the second overtime. 4848 still. Sony Michel scored on a 27yard touchdown run in the second overtime, giving Georgia a 5448 victory over Oklahoma. The other game was Alabama vs. Clemson. Alabama came off with an easy win, 246. 1st Quarter
On the first drive Alabama had to punt. The next drive Clemson punted. But the third drive of the game, Alabama kicks a 23 yard field goal. Clemson was shut down the rest of the first quarter. It looked like no one else was going to score in the 1st quarter, but with 12 seconds left, Alabama scored a touchdown. 2nd Quarter On the first play of the second quarter Jalen Hurts fumbled the ball. Even though Alabama’s offense messed up and gave the ball up at the 22 their defense did outstanding and makes Clemson settle for a field goal. This was Clemson’s final score of the game. 3rd Quarter Jalen Hurts passes for a TD. Clemson is intercepted by Alabama for a 18 yard pick six. 4th Quarter The game stayed the way it was. No notable plays. Final 24 Alabama, 6 Clemson The final was Alabama vs. Georgia. For the last game we decided to just write a synopsis. The final, personally, was one of the most insane games I have ever watched. Georgia was winning 140
and just like that the score was tied 2020 with 3 seconds left in the game after true sophomore Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was put in. Alabama had a chance to win it in regulation when they missed a field goal with 1 second left in the game. The kicker must have felt so bad shanking the ball 10 feet to the right, twice! So just like that they were into overtime. Georgia was sacked on third and long and was forced to kick a 51 yard field goal that they made. Now it's Alabama's turn. The true sophomore quarterback gets sacked for a second and very, very, very long. But Tua Tagovailoa the rookie freshman comes back with a 41yard touchdown to DeVonta Smith. And that about wraps it up. Alabama wins the National Championship again. They’re the Patriots of college football.
