School Section ST. MARK’S AND HOCKADAY MIXER The whole theme of the Hockaday and St. Mark’s mixer was spring fever. First, when people got there, everybody was split up into groups. Then, we were given a sheet of paper that had a list of traits. We had to find people who met those traits and give the sheet back. The person who filled out the sheet, and everybody on the sheet, was given a prize at the end. After that, we went into our groups outside. There, we found water balloons tied to a tree and had to keep the water balloons from breaking once the strings were cut. We did this using materials we found in a bag under the water balloons. The materials were one roll of duct tape, one towel, one bag, and cotton balls. The goal was to build something in twenty minutes that would hold the water balloon after someone cut the string attaching it to the tree. Then, we went inside and got into our groups to complete eight activities. The group that was the fastest won and was given a prize. The prize was ten dollars to the student store for every member of the group. Some groups also got cups filled with candy. All in all, it was a fun experience and involved good social skills. It was a great opportunity to meet the Hockaday girls, and we’ll be looking forward to future mixers.

Mrs. Cham’s Retirement Mrs. Cham, whom we all might know from being a great math teacher and the WE Charity leader, is leaving St. Mark’s after the completion of this school year. We wanted to hear her opinion of St. Mark’s from the past years, and she happily agreed to do an interview. Interviewer: What do you plan on doing once you’re retired? Mrs. Cham: I plan, for a little while, to do nothing. Then I will do volunteer work and help out with my grandkids. I: What inspired you to retire from St. Mark’s? Cham: I would think it was my age. I: How did you like your last year at St. Mark’s? Cham: I like every year at St. Mark’s, whether it’s my first or my last. I: What was your favorite thing about teaching at St. Mark’s? Cham: I think that my favorite thing would be the colleagues and the students. I mean, without them, you have nothing.

Thank you, Mrs. Cham!

Sports Section SpecializatioN In Sports Now, more and more, we see trophy kids only playing one sport in an attempt to get really good at that sport. While this seems like a great idea, it’s really not. Specializing creates way more overuse injuries. The problem isn’t the kids, most of the time; it’s their parents. For parents, they want their kids to be the best, but this doesn’t always mean it’s best for the kids. This is a growing problem among many athletes across the globe. We wanted to get some help from a physician on this problem, so we went to Dr. Kimberly Mehendale. Interviewer: What physical effect does specializing have on young athletes? What mental effect does it have? Dr. Mehendale: Repetitive strain on young muscles causes more injuries. Training in multiple sports allows certain muscles time to rebuild and heal while strengthening different muscle groups. The mental effect is important to consider as well, as there is a high burnout rate in young athletes who only play one sport; the child doesn’t have a backup. Students have more success if they have outside activities than only academics. I: At what age is it okay to only play one sport? Dr. Mehendale: There is not a consensus on this question. Most recommend high school age is a good time to specialize. I: What can we do to help parents realize what is best for their kids? Dr. Mehendale: Education. The numbers don’t lie. Injuries and burnout are higher in single sport athletes.

I: How can athletes still get really good in a sport but not specialize? Dr. Mehendale: In some sports, it is easy to pick up skills as the athlete ages. Football is a great example. A well rounded athlete can start football in high school or college and be very successful. There are plenty of examples of this late entry in the news. Other sports (such as gymnastics) require repetitive muscle memory. We recommend having days (and weeks) of cross training and rest to help the body stay healthy. I: Are most of the overuse injuries that come from playing only one sport career ending or do they just mean a player is out for a while? Dr. Mehendale: There are plenty examples of both career ending and just time off. I would say that “most” require rest, and the athlete is able to get back to their sport. However, if the athlete doesn’t change something in their schedule or training, there will be another injury requiring more time out. Over and over puts the athlete out of contention for the top of their sport. I: How do you treat overuse injuries? Dr. Mehendale: We will address the specific injury with rehabilitation and strengthening. However, we will also educate the athlete on preventing further injuries in the future with other modalities such as cross training or limiting hours-per-week.

Finals Preview Liverpool vs. Real Madrid Real Madrid: Real Madrid is in 3rd place of their league, La Liga, behind Atletico Madrid in 2nd, and Barcelona in 1st. Their greatest hope for winning the Champions League is behind their star player, Cristiano Ronaldo. He is one of the greatest players of all time and will not stop fighting until the final whistle. Liverpool: Liverpool is in 4th place of the Premier League, behind Tottenham in 3rd, Manchester United in 2nd, and Manchester City in 1st. Their chance of beating Real is stressed on their star player, Mohamed Salah. This season, he broke a Premier League record. In the thirty-eight game season, he scored thirty-two goals. He will be Liverpool’s hope at the game in Ukraine. Matchup: These two teams have totally different playing styles, but they have the same strengths. They both have world-class strikers, Ronaldo and Salah. Real does have the upper-hand on midfielders. They have both Toni Kroos, who plays for the German national team, and Luka Modrić, who plays for the Croatian national team. Finally, both teams have a great back-line. The misconception is that the only reason these two teams got to the finals were Ronaldo and Salah, but their defense plays an equal part. It doesn’t matter how much you score if your defense lets in more. Ronaldo and Salah played a big role, but they were not the only reason that these two teams got to the finals. These two teams will make a great match-up on the twenty-sixth of May.
