MS Cross Country Meet

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, the St. Mark’s Middle School Cross Country team went to the Daisy Dash, a meet at the Hockaday School. The Lion Pride team interviewed three seventh graders who participated in the meet, Raja Mehendale,

Clark Cooper, and Asa McCaleb on their thoughts on the meet and being on the cross country team. Lion Pride: How did you each individually prepare for the meet? Clark Cooper: Throughout the school day, I drink 2 liters of water before lunch, and 12 liters after lunch. At lunch, I will eat a bland sandwich. The night before, I will eat pasta to gain carbs. Asa McCaleb: The night before, I usually have some sort of pasta. I also drink a good amount of water that night and the day of. We also have the warmups before the race. Raja Mehendale: I have a strict routine that I will perform on the days leading up to the race. When there are still two days until the race, I will be drinking lots of water and trying to stay away from the caffeine. The day before the race, I will continue to drink water to an even higher scale. Lunch that day, I will start carboloading, and making sure I am getting a lot of protein. For the practice that day we will do a light distance run and some sprints, and the end of practice we take a long stretch down to prepare ourselves for the race tomorrow. Once again, I eat a big carbohydrate meal and lots of protein for dinner that night. That night it is important to visualize what the run the next day is going to look like and feel like, this helps get rid of some of those nerves and helps improve the mindset for the next day. The day of the race, I wake up have lots of sausages, eggs, and some kind of bread. I make sure to stay off my feet all day, looking to sit wherever I go. When we arrive at the site of the meet, we set up our tarps and wait. Waiting to warm up before the meet is the hardest thing to do the whole day. When it is finally time I will lead the team in a warmup run, stretch, and dynamic warmup. When the team arrives at the starting line, we will do some warmup sprints to get our heart rate up and be ready. When the air horn is blown, I am off. LP: Even though you technically run the race alone, is there a team element to doing Cross Country? CC: Yes. To place well and win the race, you have to have the top 5 runners place better than other team’s runners. Also, in the race, you can work with your teammates by taking turns leading and pushing each other.

AM: Yes. For me, I would consider a good runner. But without my teammates, I would not be the runner that I am now. RM: Absolutely. I think about all the people that push me in practice, and I owe all wins to them. The whole team has each other’s best interests in mind, and when there are days that I get lazy, I know that Issac, Clark, Asa, and Henry will keep me accountable. Also, I consider myself a leader on the team, not just because I am the fastest, anyone can be a leader. I hold others accountable as they do to me. On a side note though, I am not running the race alone at all, I know that no matter what happens I have my team behind me. (not literally, metaphorically) There is an added up total score in cross country that teams receive. While the seventhgrade team hasn't won first place yet in the total team score, October 23 at Greenhill (our last meet) we plan to come out with fire. (It would be fantastic if you guys come out to support us at Greenhill) LP: Why did you choose to do Cross Country? CC: I like running. My dad ran here and had records, and I’d like to maybe beat those one day. AM: I’ve always liked running since third grade. My dad ran and my brother’s really good at running. You’re racing against yourself, which is fun. It doesn’t matter what place you get, it’s the time. RM: Ever since Coach Doc took me on my first mile run in first grade, I fell in love with the sport. There is no greater feeling than knowing you've pushed it past the limits, gave everything that you have to give, and improved your time. I set a goal to run at the University of North Carolina. Lofty as it may seem, I love pursuing this even though there are some days that even I think it is impossible. A big plus of cross country is, I love how organized Coach Boucher is, he sends emails to keep everyone updated on race times and sends out great emails after the races to let everyone know how they did. LP: What is your favorite part about running Cross Country? CC: I like all of it, really. I like the racing part when you are pushing yourself to go faster. I like distance days because you get to run with your teammates and socialize with them a bit.

RM: Jokingly, winning. In all seriousness though, I just love being outdoors, I enjoy pushing myself and the others around me to the limits, and then past them. This mentality when you are training is absolutely necessary if you want to be the best at something. Also, as a person that loves all the meticulous little details of preparation, there are plenty in cross country. I do have that nervous feeling going into the race, but by that second turn, all the butterflies are gone. It's just the course and me after that.

Schoo Sectio Celebrate 7 Celebrate 7 is an organization run by the St. Mark’s and Hockaday parents. Every year, the parents of that current 7thgrade class get together and plan a sort of mixer for the Hockaday boys and girls. During this party, the parents got a list of everybody that was supposed to be there and then split us into groups randomly. There were about seven to eight kids per group and a couple parent leaders. When we were at the party, there were a number of challenges that our groups had to complete. After we had a couple of minutes to get to know our group members, the first challenge started. In the first event, our group leaders had received a list of questions for us. Whichever group had the most answers, won. After that, we did a few more challenges including: blow the cup off of the table with a balloon, eating an Oreo off your nose, and much more, in all of which we counted up our points. Each person on the team with the most points total got a gift card! After that, we had pizza with our friends. All in all, it was a really great night.

Lion Pride Review Section 9 From the Nine Worlds By: Rick Riordan This book isn’t the same as any other Magnus Chase book. In fact, this book is helping us to get a better perspective of each of the nine worlds and has one of our main characters going off into quest whether that is getting some clothes, getting dragon scales, and sometimes even having to take advice from an enemy of how to choose the next Valkyries captain. Meanwhile, Thor is running across the nine worlds to gain 10 million steps to be a cameo on his Midgard television show, so pretty much they all see him or they have to help them and try to avoid his smell. The book does continue from the last book but it different ways.

Venom The movie Venom is a new Marvel superhero movie featuring the main protagonist, Eddie Brock, and the symbiote Venom. The first half of the movie builds a lot of background for the remaining half of the movie. It explains things such as Eddie’s relationship with his wife, Anne, as well as the questionable experiments performed by Mr. Drake, a scientist who believes that he is taking the next step toward mankind’s future. When Eddie goes to investigate the experiments, he comes into contact with Venom, and they make their escape from the lab. The rest of the movie involves the pair teaming up in epic action scenes that feature unique stunts that can only happen in a movie like this. The movie is not part of a series, so you don’t have to watch any other movies before this to understand this one. I recommend this movie because of its many interesting action scenes and its relatable characters.

Fortnite season 6

Google Images

Yes. It’s Fortnite. Finally. The game that has taken the world by storm. (Pun not intended.) Well, after its twoseason explosion, the game may receive its final surge in Season 6. Why? Well, we’ll break it down for you. Season 3 Not the most popular season of Fortnite, but it gained a lot of praise for the aspect of building in a battle royale game. There was no theme in this season. Season 4 The first “themed” season, it was based around the meteor that landed in Dusty Depot, creating a new location in Dusty Divot. The meteor in Dusty Divot split open, and the Visitor, an alien came out. He hijacked the rocket and ripped through the time rift. Season 5 The theme was based on Vikings/the past and time rifts, where there were Vikingthemed skins in the battle pass, and it introduced new map changes, turning a hill into a Viking village, and turning Moisty Mire into a desert, with a new

location of Paradise Palms. The big “event” of Season 5 was the cube. It rolled around the map and ended at Loot Lake, where it melted into the lake. The Season 6 summary and reviews Season 6 is based on the cube, the floating Loot Lake island, and the “corrupted” areas. It involves the skins DJ Yonder and Calamity (unlocked at the beginning of the battle pass), GiddyUp (A default with a llama costume), Dusk (A girl vampire for Halloween), Nightshade (the female tomato head), and Dire (the werewolf). Calamity and Dire both have unlockable styles. The battle pass comes with pets, new dances, and lobby music. Review by writer #1: My opinion is that Season 6 is not even close to the eliteness of Season 4. I did not play in Season 3 but started in Season 4. Season 4 was much better for a couple reasons: #1: THANOS MODE: There was an LTM where you could turn into Thanos. Pretty fun. #2: Battle pass. The skins, emotes, and dances were so much better in Season 4. #3: Gun Balances. Do we even need to talk about this? Season 4 had the double pump strategy still and was very well balanced due to the timing of the switch between guns. When all the new SMGs came out, Season 5 and now Season 6 basically eliminated the shotgun strategy. The skill gap that Fortnite used to have is becoming lesser as less experienced players kill more experienced players due to a mindless spray. There are way too many streamers and pro players complaining about the spray. Plus, the switch between shotguns and any other weapons now takes 1 second, which is why spray is becoming a more useful strategy.
