Those attending Commencement activities at Southern Methodist University on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, may park in any of the University’s parking facilities: Airline Parking Center, located at Airline Road and Daniel Avenue; Moody Parking Center, located at Airline Road and SMU Boulevard; Binkley Parking Center, located at the corner of Binkley Avenue and Ownby Drive, Mustang Parking Center, located off of Bush Avenue by the Residential Commons, and AA Surface Lot, located at Airline Road and University Blvd. Maps showing the location of parking lots and campus buildings, and directions to campus are available at http://www.smu.edu/maps. No parking will be permitted on Bishop Boulevard. Laws and regulations that prohibit parking in fire lanes and limit who may use areas reserved for the disabled are strictly enforced. Please allow extra time to find parking as construction activities may affect routes from parking areas to various locations on campus.

For Friday activities, guests with disabilities can park in the lot located on the northwest side of McFarlin Auditorium facing Hillcrest Avenue. Entrance to this lot is from McFarlin Boulevard. You may enter McFarlin Auditorium using the ramp on the southeast side of the building, off of McFarlin Boulevard. Ushers will be available for assistance. Guests’ current state-issued disabled parking placards and license plates are needed to park in this area. Additional parking passes are not needed. Please contact 214-768-3417 or ceremonies@smu.edu for additional questions regarding guests with mobility impairments. For Saturday activities, guests with mobility impairment may park on the second level of Binkley Garage located at the corner of Binkley Avenue and Ownby Drive. To park on this level, a current state-issued disabled parking placard and/or license plate are needed. Otherwise, guests may be dropped off on this level and cars are directed to park on the upper levels of Binkley. In 1915, the first students who stepped into the Rotunda of Dallas Hall set an example as pioneers entrusting their education to this new university. You, too, have been a part of a unique history during your years on the Hilltop. You have come to us with the highest academic credentials in our history, and you have enriched our campus in unique ways with your special talents and interests. You have been with us as we have pursued a major gifts campaign with the largest goal in our history, $1 billion. As we look toward the finale of that campaign December 31, you can be sure that your achievements at SMU have played a major role in showing our donors why the University is worthy of their support. These successes include not only your academic accomplishments, but also your unprecedented commitment to service learning and community involvement. During your time here, the president of the United States and four former presidents have visited campus to dedicate the George W. Bush Presidential Center, which continues to attract dignitaries. Congratulations! Congratulations on years of hard work, perseverance, dedication, and inspiration. Congratulations on learning how to balance a complex life full of obligations to your education, your friends and family, and—no less important—your obligations to yourself. But most of all, congratulations on pursuing your intellectual passions to the point of completion— for the time being, at least.

Your Dedman College education has helped you learn the foundations of a number of different ways of thinking, and you have explored the breadths and depths of knowledge and understanding that your major and other fields of study afford. You have, in fact, become deeply knowledgeable about these areas. Furthermore, you have learned about the natural world, the people who inhabit it, and their creations and institutions. You have discovered their pasts and their meaningful presents, and you have probed the ways in which people interact with others, with the environment, and, indeed, with the universe. Perhaps most important, your Dedman College education has helped you learn about your potentials as a critical thinker. Able to evaluate evidence and argument in order to judge and discern, you can also communicate your thoughts effectively and persuasively. In short, you are ready for employment, for further study, and for the rest of your life. Employers tell us over and over that they seek out students just like you: creative and agile thinkers who are prepared to take on any number of new challenges. You are ready to take on existing jobs; more impressive, you will be ready in the future to take on jobs that don’t yet even exist. Those of you continuing your education have developed the study skills and the discipline to advance both academically and professionally.
