After a 42-31 Conference USA game victory over Rice last weekend, the SMU Mustangs stampede home to Ford Stadium to take on C-USA competition, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Oct. 9. Both teams are coming off of wins last weekend. On Oct. 2 Tulsa’s powerhouse defense embarrassed the Memphis Tigers 48-7, with four turnovers for 13 points in the first half at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Tulsa’s win over Memphis was its first road win since Rice nearly a year ago on Oct. 3, 2009. It was also the third time this year that the Tulsa offensive racked up more than 40 points. Hurricane quarterback G.J. Kinne completed 18 of 31 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns for the win.

Kinne, a junior transferred to Tulsa from the University of Texas in 2008. Last season, Kinne completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,732 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also had 95 consecutive pass attempts before throwing an interception against SMU last year. At the SMU vs. Rice game on Oct. 2, SMU quarterback Kyle Padron completed 24- of-32 for 371 yards and three touchdowns on Rice turf. A game total of 395 offensive yards earned Padron Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 4. He was also named one of the Manning Award’s five national Stars of the Week. Padron completed 395 total offensive yards against the Owls (371 passing, 24 rushing), ranking 11th alltime in a game for SMU. This is the 18th time that Tulsa and SMU will

compete. SMU defeated the Golden Hurricane, 27-13, in Tulsa last season. Padron made his quarterback debut last year against Tulsa. He completed 20-of-30 for 354 yards and two touchdowns for the best quarterback debut in SMU history. “This is the best SMU team that we’ve played. We have to go in there and make sure that we take care of the football and know that it’s going to be a big challenge for us,” said Tulsa head coach Todd Graham in a press conference on Monday. The Golden Hurricane is currently 3-2 on the season and 1-1 on conference play. The Mustangs are tied with Houston atop the C-USA West Division 2-0, and are also 3-2 on the season. Kick off is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Ford Stadium.

ALDRICK ROBINSON

WR • Waxahachie, TX

QB • Southlake, TX

STERLING MOORE

DB • Oakland, CA

Robinson proved he is Padron’s favorite target last week, as the senior recorded six receptions for 148 yards and two touchdowns against Rice. Robinson leads SMU in receiving this year with 22 catches for 421 yards and six touchdowns. Robinson’s 96-yard TD reception against East Carolina last year, tied the mark for the longest pass play in school history.

Padron became SMU’s starting quarterback in the eighth game of the year in 2009. He finished the year with a 5-1 record and led the Mustangs to the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl where he was named MVP. This year, he has passed for 1,183 yards yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for 159 yards and one touchdown. Last week vs. Rice, Padron passed for 371 yards and three touchdowns and completed 75 percent of his passes.

2

A Laney CC transfer, Moore has made his presence felt on the Hilltop. In his first season at SMU in 2009, he started 10 games and had a team-high 11 pass breakups on the season. This season, Moore has definitely stepped up as SMU’s No. 1 cornerback. The senior has tallied 14 tackles, one sack and two interceptions. Last week vs. Rice, Moore recorded 8 tackles and returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown.

DAMARIS JOHNSON

WR • Norco, LA

QB • Gilmer, TX Kinne was a highly touted recruit coming out of Gilmer after throwing for 11,695 yards — ranking him third all-time in Texas high school football history. He signed with the University of Texas, but transferred to Tulsa prior to the 2008 season. This season, the junior has thrown for 1,420 yards and 13 touchdowns. Last week vs. Memphis, Kinne passed for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

CURNELIUS ARNICK

LB • Dallas, TX

Johnson is considered to be one of the most explosive players in Conference USA. He has ranked among the nation's top-5 allpurpose yardage leaders in his two seasons — ranked fifth as a freshman and led the nation in 2009 as a sophomore. Johnson only needs 2,405 all-purpose yards to tie former Memphis and current Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams (200205) for the C-USA career record of 7,573 yards.

Arnick has been living up to expectations of having a monster junior year. The Dallas native has already tallied 48 tackles including 25 solos and one sack which leads the team. In 2009, Arnick recorded 53 tackles and also had one fumble recovery. He has a great frame and size and can play all three linebacker spots. Last year vs. SMU, he had seven tackles including one for a loss. Last week vs. Memphis, Arnick had a team-high nine tackles including eight solos and one sack.

OPINION

Four years of "Boulevarding" were worth the wait As a freshman in 2007, I came to SMU for an abundance of reasons: the academic rigor, the pristine nature of the campus, the openness of the community, Haynes Strader the array of social opportunities, and the chance to be back in Dallas, where I was born. However, the SMU football program was not one of the main attractions. For me, it wasn’t a big deal; I had grown up as a Duke fan, which has never been renowned for football. In late August, my freshman year, I had very little interest in SMU football whatsoever, but little did I know how much that would change. On Sept. 3, 2007, I enjoyed my first “Boulevard” experience and was overwhelmed with the spirited, excited atmosphere that enveloped the campus. I had been to a number of tailgates at UNC, Duke, NC State and others, but none of them had prepared me for what the Boulevard is about. There are so many fans of many major colleges because of the athletic brand that people of all associations latch onto, but at the SMU Boulevard, the fans were true alumni, students, parents, donors, and friends of the school. COMMENTARY

People were coming, not just for the football, but because they were all invested in SMU’s success as an institution in one way or another. It wasn’t about the quantity of the people, but the quality of the type of people who cared about SMU and came to support the Mustangs on the field. Then I went to the game. We played Texas Tech and got stomped. The stadium was nearly empty by the second half and I was somewhat disenchanted. Nonetheless, I went to every single home game that season with the exceptions of the Tulane and Central Florida games because I was out of town on Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, respectively. We went 1-11 that season and while the Boulevard was always packed with spirit, only a few managed to make it and stay through the whole game. Looking back on that season, I feel like we’ve won the lottery since. Two years ago, we signed one of the most prolific names in football as our head coach and went 8-5 in his second season, culminating with a bowl game win. This season we’re already 3-2, just sold out a game against the highest-ranked team that we’ve ever hosted in Ford Stadium, and despite the fact that we lost, we played a magnificent game. SMU football is on the rise. President Turner, the SMU Board of Trustees, the Mustang Club, the Student Body, and many others all deserve an enormous amount of credit for what is

perhaps one of the biggest turnarounds ever in a NCAA football program. However, those who deserve the most credit are the players and coaches who have physically turned this program around. As students, it is our job to do well in school, support the programs that interest us and participate in the SMU community. As alumni, it is our duty to donate, remain active, and participate in whatever ways that we can to contribute to SMU’s continued success on and off the field. But most importantly as Mustang fans, it is our duty to go to the games, to cheer on our athletes, and to support all of SMU’s athletic endeavors.

Southern Methodist University is on the rise in every way and athletics is a huge part of it. As a community, we need to rally around and build upon the many successes that are being achieved on this campus every day. There is not a school in the world that I would rather call my alma mater (degrees pending…) than SMU and I hope that you can all say the same. Be proud of what we are, support SMU, and Pony Up!
