Johnson has developed into one of SMU’s most explosive playmakers on offense. Last year, he was named to the Conference USA All Freshman Team. In the opener vs. Texas Tech, Johnson nabbed an amazing one-handed catch, which was featured on ESPN SportsCenter's top 10 plays. Last week vs. Navy, Johnson led the Mustangs in receiving with 12 receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown.
In 2009, Reed tallied 57 tackles and forced two fumbles to earn a spot on the Conference USA All Freshman Team. The super sophomore recorded 20 tackles, 12 of them solos last week vs. Navy. BRYCE BEALL
RB • Tatum, TX
QB • Southlake, TX In high school, Piland started as a junior when senior and now SMU starting quarterback Kyle Padron went down with an injury. The freshman did not expect to see much playing time this year, but when Heisman hopeful Case Keenum and backup quarterback Cotton Turner both went down with injuries, Piland stepped in. He has started the Cougars last two games and has passed for 583 yards and five touchdowns.
MARCUS McGRAW
LB • Arlington, TX
Beall has been a constant threat on the Cougars offense for three years. The junior has rushed for 544 yards and 10 touchdowns this year. In 2008, Beall became the first freshman in Houston history to rush for more than 1,000 yards, was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year and Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl MVP. In 2009, Beall rushed for 670 yards and 7 touchdowns. Last week vs. Rice, he gained 109 yards on the ground and scored one touchdown.
Considered one of Conference USA’s best defensive players, McGraw is currently on the Bronco Nagurski Trophy watch list. In 2009, McGraw led the Cougars with 156 tackles and 4 sacks and second team All-Conference USA honors. His 11.1 tackles per game ranked fifth in the nation in that category. This year, he has tallied 58 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Last week vs. Rice, McGraw recorded 11 tackles including 10 solos.

OPINION
SMU finally showing Mustang school spirit EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
The Boulevard • Special Edition of The Daily Campus

Mustang spirit has definitely taken a sharp turn for the better since I arrived on the Hilltop, that’s for sure. The waving SMU flags, painted chests and screaming fans have always been here, but now they are out in full
force. I went to Garland High School. Its not too far away, just about a half hour drive down I-30 going east. And while SMU and GHS aren’t separated by a lot space, they used to be separated by a large spirit gap. GHS has been around since 1902, a whole nine years before SMU graced the city of Dallas. The fans are proud, Ollie the Owl wears his mascot costume proudly and football rules. If you didn’t get to the football game early, you didn’t get in, and you were simply not a true Owl if you left the game early. If you backtrack through my Facebook page, you’ll find picture after picture of me dressed in black and gold, screaming at football games or decorating our school for our impending Homecoming events. After going to Garland, I’ll admit, I was spoiled. I thought that that kind of spirit was the norm, and didn’t take into account the spirit level of the student body when making my college selection. Because of that, and several other reasons, I spent my freshman year at UTD. I liked UTD, but one of the things that struck me the hardest was the utter lack of school spirit displayed by anyone on campus. Even the cheerleaders expressed a nonchalant attitude about the mighty “Comets.” Pep rallies were sparsely attended, and many of those that attended them did so ironically. Needless to say I was less than impressed by this, I also felt downright silly when I was the only one who donned green and orange on the day of the first basketball game. After making the decision to transfer to SMU, I thought that maybe the Mustangs would be better ambassadors of school spirit. But unfortunately, after my first football game last year I was left wondering the same thing that I had been wondering all of my freshman year: Where was the school spirit? I showed up wearing a t-shirt and shorts. My hair was back in a ponytail (after all, I would just look awful after four quarters worth of jumping up and down, right?), and I even considered making a sign, though I refrained. When I got to the Boulevard, I
felt immediately underdressed. Where on earth did all of these white dresses and cowboy boots come from? Did all of these girls coordinate their outfits? If so, where was I when this happened? I felt just as silly as I did at UTD before the first basketball game. I shrugged off my fashion choices, and proceeded to Ford Stadium. I was again shocked. Where were the screaming students? Why was the student section not even half filled? I asked these questions of my friends, who just said, “this is how it is” and thought nothing of it. So, my hopes for renewed school spirit slowly spiraled downward. Those hopes hit the floor when half of the students in the sparse student section left after half time. This year though, things are different. Maybe the bowl game woke SMU students up to the glory that is Texas football, I don’t know, but there is a different feeling on SMU’s campus during every home game. The student section is clearly fuller, and not as many students peace out after half time. Even the Tech game was full of SMU students, and that was six hours away. When I brought my parents along to the TCU game this year, they were instantly reminded of the football games they accompanied me to at GHS. The student section was packed full, and the stand were a sea of red. Friends that came to see the game from A&M were even impressed by the level of spirit that flooded the Ford. I am happy to say that this year has far and beyond exceeded my expectations. Even if some games are less attended than others, even at our worst we display more spirit than we did last year. But this shouldn’t be our stopping point. If the Mustangs are going to lead us to another major victory then they need our support. Lets not let that support die out after half time or simmer down after we unexpectedly lose a game. Our football team deserves a steady stream of spirit, not a flood when we win and a trickle when we lose. If this season turns out not as we expect, the result shouldn’t be a return to the low level of spirit we displayed last year. Lets stick with our team, through the good and the bad. That’s what it means to be a Mustang. Jessica Huseman is a junior journalism and political science double major. She can be reached for comments or questions at jhuseman@smu.edu.
