hile freshman year is a time of excitement, new beginnings and making friends, every student already has one enemy: the “Freshman 15”. We were warned about it at AARO. We were warned about it by our parents. We held contests with our friends, and we were determined to beat it. Very few freshmen accomplish this goal, but take it from me – it’s not impossible. I survived, and you can also. So, how did I do it? Well, if you haven’t figured out where the Freshman 15 hides yet, I will give you some possibilities : Mac’s Place, The Varsity, Café 100 and especially Umph all have unhealthy food options. Their sworn enemy? Dedman Rec Center. However, you don’t need to be victimized by “real food on campus,” and you don’t have

to spend your days relentlessly working out in the gym in order to conquer this battle. First of all, you should be conscious of what you eat. Rather than always getting a cheeseburger or pizza from Mac’s Place, choose fruit and a sandwich. Drink water instead of soda. Decide on eating dried fruit and trail mix instead of candy. If substitution is as hard for you as it is for me, then cut down on portions. Most importantly, you need to know how many calories are in your meals. In order to ensure accuracy and to make the counting easier, I suggest downloading the “MyFitnessPal” app on your smartphone. It keeps track of personal goals, weight loss and has a lot of nutritional information available in the app’s food database. My second piece of advice is to increase

your activity. I’m not much of a gym person and you don’t have to be either. Life as a college student is hectic, so fitting the gym into your schedule can be difficult. Instead, walk a little faster around campus. Take the stairs when possible. If you have to buy something from CVS, don’t drive or ride Giddy-Up as far as they can take you – walk or ride your bike. At the end of the day, surviving the Freshman 15 is a choice. I know how hard it is to say no to the free food on the Bouelvard or at your dorm’s social, but it’s possible with a positive attitude and determined spirit. If your friends want to go to Umph and you’re not strong enough to tag along yet, no one is forcing you. College is hard enough as it is—don’t let the Freshman 15 make it any worse.

Decadent foods as shown above can be very tasty, but packed with calories. Enjoy whole foods and leaner portions to help standoff those extra pounds during freshman year.

MU’s location is optimal for the starving college student as there is an abundant amount of reasonably priced restaurants around campus within a convenient 10 minute drive. As a result, many students who have their cars don’t bother eating on campus because of the variety that off-campus restaurants have to offer. However, leaving campus can be time-consuming. Although you might find yourself wondering where you can eat good food on campus, believe it or not, there is a variety of selections besides Umph that you can choose from including:

1

Mac’s Place: Located in the South Quad inside of McElvaney Residence Hall, Mac’s Place has plenty to offer its patrons. Most of the food is cooked to order, and if it isn’t, it’s still fresh. Better yet, you can use your meal plan for a dinner that tastes better than some off-campus selections. There are multiple TVs and a lobby that enables students to hang out and eat with friends. This past summer, Mac’s

Place was renovated and supplemented with new food options including F’real frozen milkshakes. In addition, students can now write their orders down for the grill.

is made up of the following fast-food restaurants: Subway, Pizza Hut and ChickFil-A. If you don’t have time for a full meal, there are many snack options and drinks for purchase as well.

eSMUcho: Located inside of the Market on the second floor of Hughes-Trigg, eSMUcho makes burritos, quesadillas and salads. The chips and queso come in generous portions and at a great price. This is the only place where you can get delicious, satisfying Mexican food on campus, and it is worth every penny.

Sushic: Located right next to eSMUcho, this spot is ideal for all of the sushi lovers on campus. Sushic has fresh sushi, complimentary samples and a wide selection to choose from.

SMUothies: Located near the entrance of the Dedman Rec Center, SMUothies offers delicious and refreshing smoothies. You can pick one of the choices from the menu or you can customize your own. They taste even better after a grueling workout or a day spent in the Texas heat.

o, why waste gas money when you can get the same, if not better, meal for a great price? These are just a few of the options that SMU has to offer. They’re convenient and tasty, and trust me – they’re worth it.

The Varsity. If you’re in the mood for a quick and filling meal, The Varsity is the place for you. Located on the lower level of Hughes-Trigg, The Varsity

Students bring their selections to the register at Mac's Place, one of five unique and delicious dining options on campus.
