Letter from the PRESIDENT Thank you for your interest in Nevada State College. I am thrilled to share with you our second edition of the Black & Gold Annual. This publication was developed especially for you — our NSC community, family, friends, future students, and alumni — to celebrate and acknowledge the terrific happenings of the College. The College has achieved great success within the past year. In January, we held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of two new campus buildings: the Nursing, Science and Education building and the Student Center and Administration building. With the addition of these two buildings,

our campus will grow by approximately 132,000 square feet, which will allow us to centralize our students, faculty, and staff to the main campus site. This is very exciting news! The College has experienced exceptional growth of 20 percent in our first-time, full-time freshmen. As the College continues to grow, it will be paramount to focus on the student experience as a means to achieve greater student success for both retention and graduation. We are looking at various scenarios to increase the student experience, such as food services, athletic programs, child care, additional undergraduate research opportunities, summer bridge programs, academic advising, and career services — to name just a few. In January, we will kick off the “Be the Difference” campaign, which is a campuswide effort to enhance customer-based services provided to our students. I’d like to thank each of you for your ongoing commitment and support of Nevada State College. I am honored to serve as president of the College and commend our faculty and staff for their dedication and commitment to our academic programs and campus experience, which benefit both our students and the community. To stay in touch and receive the most up-to-date information about the College and the Office of the President throughout the year, feel free to connect with me by Twitter (@nscpatterson), Facebook (facebook.com/ nscpatterson), email (bart.patterson@nsc.edu), or phone (702-992-2350). I look forward to hearing from you. And remember to always Be Bold, Be Great, Be State! Warm regards,
Bart Patterson President

BUIL Nevada State College prioritizes student involvement, “Nevada State has been one of the 15 fastest-growing fouryear colleges in the country over the last ten years.” – President Bart Patterson In the past year, NSC hosted both a groundbreaking event and a beam signing ceremony for the new building projects.
Nevada State College (NSC) may be the state’s newest higher-education institution, but the college is making great strides when it comes to student involvement, campus expansion, and student body growth. NSC was established in 2002 and is located about 15 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. With a student body of around 3,500 students, the school also boasts an impressive facultyto-student ratio, with 27 or fewer students in every class. This personal attention, along with the college’s ease of access, makes it an appealing choice for prospective students. “Nevada State has been one of the 15 fastest-growing four-year colleges in the country over the last ten years. The primary reason for our success—and our students’ success—is our incredible faculty and staff,” says President Bart Patterson. “We’ve made a point of hiring the very best teaching faculty and support staff and keeping our class size small. The result has been the creation of an exceptionally engaged teaching and learning atmosphere in and out of the classroom on campus.”

Letter from the DEAN Nevada State College has seized the opportunity to become one of the national innovators in preparing students for careers in education. Recognizing people learn differently, students at NSC have choices in how they develop into amazing teachers of children. Some will select the traditional preparation model practiced in the classical era by Socrates,

adjusted in the Medieval Age, and continued in some modified form in most teacher education programs in the USA. Others will attain a liberal arts degree while working with mentor teachers in an apprenticeship-type arrangement over the course of their NSC studies. Students are able to study for certification in elementary, secondary, and/ or middle school teaching. Specialties may be earned in speech-language pathology, special education, teaching English as a second language, bilingual education, educational technology, secondary English, secondary history, secondary mathematics, secondary biology, and secondary environmental studies. The School of Education faculty have all been teachers of children in K–12 classrooms at some point in their careers before working with the Nevada State College students seeking teacher certification. Some of our education courses are held in K–12 schools, where students have the college instruction combined with working with children and their teachers in children’s classroom. Upon graduation, Nevada State College graduates working as K–12 teachers in Southern Nevada schools have the option of continuing to work with School of Education faculty for their first three years of teaching as they move from “novice” teacher status to “tenured” in the school district where they are employed. Our experienced faculty is eager to prepare those interested in becoming classroom teachers of young people.

Look deep into any community, and you’ll see that it’s made up of many layers. From government entities and community organizations to educational facilities and retailers and families, the layers are always changing and adapting to the current needs of the area. The same goes for a college or university. Nobody knows that better than Edith Fernandez, the associate vice president of community engagement and diversity initiatives at Nevada State College. Her job is to help people make connections both at NSC and within the community at large. “Collaboration is key when working with the greater community,” says Fernandez. “Whether it’s helping veterans, undocumented students, people who identify as LGBTQ, or other specialized audiences, NSC strives to ensure that we are supporting and accommodating these students in the best way possible.”

In order to provide high-quality learning experiences, LAS faculty continue to expand opportunities for hands-on learning throughout the curriculum. For instance, the English program launched 300 Days of Sun, a literary journal. English students review submissions and design the layout. In the visual media program, students made a short movie and showed it at the Las Vegas Film Festival. Biology and chemistry students worked with faculty on research projects sponsored by a grant, and students continue to work with stateof-the-art biotechnology and biomedical equipment that is rare even at the nation’s elite private colleges and universities. In the social sciences, psychology students in the advanced research methods capstone designed and completed research projects, concluding with a poster session where students presented their findings to the NSC community. We also introduced new programs that give our students more degree options, including a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice. The Humanities department created a new professional writing minor to help students in any major master the types of writing common in the

LAS students earned recognition in a variety of areas. Some of our visual media majors won the award for Best Use of Character in the 48-Hour Film Project competition, while a chemistry student won first place in an American Chemical Society undergraduate poster competition. LAS alumni have been accepted into medical, pharmacy, dental, and veterinary schools; law school; and master’s and doctoral programs in a variety of disciplines. To encourage more students to apply to graduate programs, LAS faculty accompanied students to a graduate school boot camp on the UNR campus in May. The faculty and staff in LAS are grateful to have the opportunity to help build NSC and contribute to our students’ success and the continued fulfillment of our goal of providing excellent instruction that expands the opportunities available to the citizens of Nevada.

Dear Friends,
Alumni PROFILE Megan Oupatiga came to the United States from Thailand in May 2007 and started at NSC in 2009. Though English was her second language, she committed herself fully to gaining knowledge that she knew would enable her to have a career in pharmacy. She sometimes spent hours poring over her textbooks with a dictionary in hand, constantly looking up words, to build a full understanding. Her positive attitude, along with inspiration from faculty members, helped her succeed, earning A after A in each of her courses. Continuously working full-time jobs while being a full-time

student, Oupatiga charged on with unbelievable diligence. When she took her Pharmacy School Admission test, she scored in the 87th percentile as a composite score.
In 2014, 167 NSC graduates received their degree from the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
In the biology portion of the test, she was in the 97th percentile! With the help of many terrific interdisciplinary faculty, she began the application process to pharmacy school. She applied and was accepted to four schools in total. U.S. News and World Report ranked three of them among the top five programs in the country. Oupatiga described this process as a somewhat unrealistic endeavor, but with the help of NSC’s faculty, she was willing to take a chance. She is now studying at the University of Wisconsin.

New FACULTY DR. ABBY PETERS, assistant professor of business, joined NSC from the University of Texas at El Paso, where she earned an MBA with a concentration in economics and a Ph.D. in international business. She is excited to be a part of LAS, where she can capitalize on the opportunity to teach courses in both management and economics and can be instrumental in building NSC’s business administration program.
her Ph.D. in organic chemistry/biochemistry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She is passionate about getting students interested in chemistry and biochemistry in the classroom and in undergraduate research. Her research interests include designing and synthesizing compounds to prevent spore germination of pathogenic bacteria that cause “C diff” colitis infection, toxic shock syndrome in postpartum women, gas gangrene, and anthrax. She is also interested in the biochemical interactions and pathways that commit these spores to germinate.
DR. JENNIFER EDMONDS, assistant professor of environmental microbiology, is a microbial ecologist with a focus on aquatic ecosystems (streams to oceans), where she asks about the role of the “good” bacteria in providing ecosystem services. Her Ph.D. research (Arizona State University) focused on a rural-to-urban gradient of streams in the Sonoran Desert, and she maintains an interest in the sustainability of urban ecosystems. She joined the NSC faculty after postdoctoral positions at the University of Georgia and the University of Hawaii and a position as faculty at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa.

Although Henderson has grown by leaps and bounds, it is still lacking when it comes to enough health care options for children. Ten years ago, a health clinic opened on the campus of Basic High School (BHS) with the goal of assisting the surrounding community with convenient health care, specifically the significant unmet health needs of children in that neighborhood. Founded as a partnership between the Nevada State College School of Nursing and Basic High School, the Dr. Joel and Carol Bower SchoolBased Health Center (SBHC) has exceeded expectations and grown to serve even more families in Southern Nevada. “Although we were aware of the dire need for these services in this area, we didn’t realize the response would be so great,” says the center’s director, Dr. Sherrilyn Coffman. “We’re pleased that we’re able to provide the clinic as a convenient option.” With an original goal of serving Henderson school children ages 4 through 19, the center’s growing reputation and popularity enabled it to extend its services to anyone who is currently a student in the Clark County School District (CCSD). “By expanding our offerings, we’re now seeing students from Boulder City

SCHOOL OF NURS [26] black [+] gold ANNUAL
tter from the DEAN The School of Nursing is perfectly poised to expand in size and scope within Southern Nevada. Our nationally accredited baccalaureate program continues to offer an innovative curriculum that is anchored within the community. The exceptional faculty in the School of Nursing weaves the caring sciences throughout the courses. The NSC nursing student gleans the necessary components of “being with” and understanding “self and other” during didactic and clinical learning opportunities. Nursing students cocreate the space for learning, sharing, and giving — alongside their patients, instructors, and peers. Each nursing experience is a unique act, which offers the undeniable space of healing to transcend between the patient and client. This humanistic approach, coupled with the rigorous general education and nursing prerequisite courses pulling from the liberal arts, truly sets the NSC nursing student apart from our academic peers. Indeed, the art of nursing is vibrant and tangible at NSC! Since 2005, the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education has nationally approved the School of Nursing. Additionally, the Nevada State Board of Nursing has fully approved the nursing program at NSC. Over 700 students have graduated from the baccalaureate nursing program at NSC, many of whom have chosen to remain right here in Southern Nevada. Nationally, the nursing shortage continues to loom, and Southern Nevada is no exception. Nevada State College affirms its commitment to addressing this concern by exploring opportunities to grow our existing programs to better meet the needs of our students and their busy lives. Stripping away barriers to success is a primary goal of NSC and the School of Nursing. As our community heals, rebuilds, and grows well into the 21st century, NSC’s School of Nursing is a committed partner. From the expert full-time faculty to our dynamic and engaged clinical faculty and our growing team of forward-thinking administrators, NSC’s

New FACULTY JUNE EASTRIDGE, MSN, RN, CNE, studied nursing education at the University of New Mexico. She holds a Certified Nurse Educator designation by the National League for Nursing. After teaching at University of New Mexico for nine years as a tenured faculty member, she was ready for a change and was attracted by the philosophy, growth, and innovation of NSC. “I love working with students and seeing them develop personally and professionally as they prepare to care for others.”
DOMINIC ETLI, MSN RN, graduated from Excelsior College in Albany, New York, with an MSN specializing in nursing education in 2012. He currently serves on the Education Advisory Committee for the Nevada State Board of Nursing. “Nevada State College has a great reputation as a leader in nursing education excellence, and I’m truly honored to be working with a great team,” says Etli. “I currently teach pharmacology and pediatrics and absolutely love the classroom environment, and I enjoy working with students as a way to share my passion for nursing and helping others in need.”
TRACEY LONG, RN, Ph.D.(c), MS, MSN, CDE, CNE, CHUC, CCRN, received a bachelor’s degree in nursing master’s degree. In addition, she is earning a Ph.D. from UNLV and holds an online teaching certificate from the College of Southern Nevada. Long is currently teaching medical surgical nursing clinical and pharmacology at NSC. “I want to be a part of the nation’s health reform by training BSN-prepared nurses,” she says. “I’m also very excited to be working with Dean Rosenberg to develop a global health program, as I love taking nursing students internationally on medical service learning trips throughout the world.”
RITA M. MILLION, MSN, RN, APHN-BC, has an ADN and a BSN from the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska, and a master’s in nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She’s teaching human nursing care in the community, and her board certification is as an Advanced Public Health Nurse–Board Certified. “I chose to join NSC because of the diversity and the large number of students who are first-time college students in their families,” says Million. “The opportunity to teach nursing allows me to be a lifelong learner while encouraging new nurses to do the same. Nursing allows me to have opportunities in the community while gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between an individual’s health, knowledge of health practices, and prior experiences. For me, nursing builds interprofessional partnerships while serving individuals, families, and populations.”

Nepantla. A Nahuatl (Uto-Aztecan language spoken by about 1.5 million people in Mexico) word meaning “in between” or a reference to the space of “the middle” or “torn between worlds.” While the term often references endangered peoples, cultures, and/ or genders that, due to marginalization, engage in resistance strategies of survival, Nevada State College utilizes it to refer to a process of developing psychological, cultural, and political consciousness rooted in the creation of a “new middle.” To help develop this innovative philosophy, Nevada State College instituted the Nepantla program, a specialized studentsupport program that consists of five components: Outreach, Summer Bridge, First

Not one to shy away from new technology, Nevada State College been busy building an online community for its campus. By utilizing OrgSync, students are now easily connected to organizations, departments, and programs. This personalized web-hosted platform creates a way to improve communication across campus through information sharing, collaborating, and reporting with an online tool for students. “The OrgSync program will truly revolutionize how the campus community connects with one another. This program creates one location where one can receive information on events held on campus, clubs to join, and service-learning opportunities. Our students are online. Now it is time for us to meet them there in addition to on-campus flyers and word-of-mouth advertising,” says Jerica Turek-Johnson, NSSA business manager and student activities advisor. If you’re not familiar with OrgSync, you’re bound to be surprised by its capabilities. The “community” portion of the web-hosted platform provides the foundation for NSC’s private online campus network and is managed by the NSSA business manager. She has the authority to oversee and manage all aspects of the community, including departments, organizations, and students. The look and feel of the site mirrors that of Facebook and other popular social media sites. Nevada State College has registered each student, faculty, and staff member under their campus community so they have access to important resources that allow them to discover programs and organizations on campus. OrgSync makes it easier for individuals to engage in campus life and manage their cocurricular involvement.
