Stress kills. We all encounter stress, and it can be overwhelming to the point that it has serious negative health effects such as contributing to strokes and heart attacks. Finding a way to decompress and at least find a temporary escape is critical to breaking the sometimes suffocating grip of stress. Few places I’ve ever been cure you of stress quite like Royal Belize, the private island a few miles off the Belize mainland owned by Cordillera Ranch resident Bill Poston. (And, no, this is not a paid endorsement for Royal Belize). In this issue, Bill answers the burning question of “How in the world does one own a private island,” but I can tell you first-hand that describing this place as simply ‘a private island’ unfairly generalizes Royal Belize and understates the experience you get there. It’s the antidote to the demands of life. The island staff snatches your bag the moment you hop off the boat taking away any faint memory of deadlines, projects or responsibilities with them, and they fill the void in your open hand with their signature Rum cocktail. Their bottomless glasses pose no problem because you’re on the island alone with only your group of friends and the staff. craft beer are ready to be paired with any part of your culinary journey. It’s an offering where surf meets turf in the beautiful Cordillera Hill Country setting. Cordillera’s Signature Menu is offered Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 5:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Come and get your casually refined food fix with the Cordillera Ranch Signature Menu.
Cordillera Ranch 24 Hour Braised Pork Shank • 1 whole Pork Shank • 1 Bay Leaf • 1 Sprig of Fresh Thyme • 2 oz. Diced Carrot • 2 oz. Diced Celery • 2 oz. Diced Onion • 14 oz. Veal Stock • Red Wine To start this recipe, please note, a Cryovac machine and bags are recommended along with a thermo-circulator. This can be done without these tools, but requires a different recipe. Simply combine all ingredients in a Cryovac bag; season with a touch of salt and cracked pepper and vacuum seal. Place in a circulating water bath at 135 degrees. Allow this to go for the minimum of 16 hours. After 16 hours have passed, remove all of the products from the Cryovac bag and place into a deep roasting pot. Add ½ cup of red wine and 13oz of veal stock. Cover with a lid or foil, and place in the oven for an additional 8 hours at 200 degrees. Stock may be added if it seems to be drying up.

• 2 pounds Baked Potato • 2 Large Eggs • ½ cup all purpose flour • 1 Tbsp. Olive Oil Peel baked potatoes and push the product through a food mill. Place the fine mashed potato in a mixing bowl. Combine with 2 large eggs and oil; mix. Slowly add flour and knead delicately to incorporate the flour to the potato till it forms a nice dough ball that does not stick to the sides of the mixing bowl. Allow to sit for 30 minutes before rolling and poaching. With a table scraper, cut dough into small blocks and roll by hand into long tubes. Cut the tube with the scraper into ¾ inch pieces. Place on a sheet pan and cool. Fill up a large pot with water, season with sea salt and bring to a boil. Using the back of a fork or a grooved wooden paddle, roll the gnocchi into the boiling water. Allow to cook until the dumpling floats to the top of the water. Remove with a strainer and shock in an ice bath. Toss in olive oil, and refrigerate till you are ready to use.

• 1 Braised pork Shank • 7 pcs Black Truffle Potato Gnocchi • ½ cup Diced Vine Ripened Tomato • 2 oz. White Cheddar • 4 oz. Heavy Cream • 1 tsp. Black truffle oil • 1 Tbsp. Chopped Herbs • 2 Tbsp. Butter • 2 oz. Orange-Scented Demi-Glace Start by placing the Braised Shank into the oven, covered with a touch of stock to warm. In a saute pan, start with a touch of cooking oil; place the gnocchi in. Allow the gnocchi to brown. Move them regularly to get even color around. Then add the Heavy cream to the pan; allow the cream to come to temperature while the cream begins to reduce, add the white cheddar and the truffle oil; then lower the heat. Allow this to simmer and thicken. Add the chopped herbs and the butter; remove from the heat and mix with a spoon to emulsify. Remove the shank from the oven and place into a small saute pan. Add ½ a cup of red wine. Also add any natural drippings that were left in the pan while in the oven. Baste these drippings over the shank until the pan is almost dry. Then remove from heat and pour the orange-scented demi-glace over the shank in the pan, allowing the pan to catch the run off and to mix with the drippings. TO PLATE: Using a large surfaced plate, pour the gnocchi and white cheddar sauce mixture onto the bottom of the plate; allow it to flow naturally. Place the Shank in the center with the bone going to the top right. Pour the pan Sauce directly over the meat. Sprinkle the shank with grated parmesan and then chopped herbs. Enjoy!

March marks the beginning of the busy Spring golf season here in South Texas. Not only is it a great time to come out and play with some friends or clients when the golf course is in fantastic shape, but we also have a number of events that highlight the tournament calendar. The 9th Annual Cordillera Cup will take place Saturday and Sunday March 21st – 22nd. This Ryder Cup style team competition is the most popular tournament we have amongst our members and thus continues to grow in numbers every year. Last year, the Northington team continued their victory string in one of the closest competitions in the tournament’s history. Despite the event’s one sidedness, the format is always fun and part of being a team is what makes this event so special. Members must register on-line for the tournament this year at www.clubsofcordilleraranch.com The Cordillera Ranch Golf Professional staff will once again be hosting an Adult Short Game Clinic Tuesday-Thursday March 24th – 26th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at the Practice Park. This always seems to be a well attended event and space is limited to the first 24 participants. Focus will once again be on Chipping and Pitching, Bunker play and Putting. March means the return of the Valero Texas Open here in San Antonio. Golf San Antonio has done a terrific job with this event in their efforts to make this one of the best events on the PGA Tour. Valero continues to sponsor the event and help make it the leading tournament on the PGA tour with over $9 million going to charity last year. I am sure our very own Jimmy Walker will be playing this year so I hope you will consider supporting him and head over and watch the best players in the world compete at the TPC San Antonio course. The Blockbuster Demo Day is set for Saturday April 11th from 9:00am -3:00pm. We have added a few things this year to make the event even more entertaining, including music, beer and a few apparel vendors that will help create a very festive atmosphere. We once again will have a fantastic group of manufacturers lined up to showcase the latest technology in golf clubs. We will have special discounts on products purchased or ordered that day only so I hope you have the chance to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Complimentary sodas and hot dogs will be available so come and enjoy the day with us. The El Compadre Member-Member will take place April 25th – 26th. The format will once again be a Two-Man Quota and Net BB Quota and we will continue the popular Saturday Casino night that has become a big part of the event. Put this date on your calendar and come join us for a great time with good friends. We also will be hosting our Major’s series of One Day Member-Guests’ this year and our Master’s One Day Member-Guest will kick us off. The tournament is scheduled for Friday April 10th and is a great way to bring up to three guests and showcase all of the beautiful Cordillera Ranch facilities and incredible Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. GOLF PGA Merchandise Show “The MAJOR of the Golf Business” By Sarah Mason
The Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida opened its doors to over 40,000 industry professionals this past January. Following record breaking attendance at the Teaching and Coaching Workshops and The PGA Show Outdoor Demo Day on Tuesday, it’s clear to see that the game is growing. PGA Golf Professionals came out to test the best of the best at the Orange County National Golf Center. The largest outdoor demo in the world gives golf equipment companies a chance to showcase the newest drivers, woods, irons, wedges, putters, balls, shafts, grips, club fitting best practices, scoring clinics and instructional aides and more. While the tech savvy golf professionals were at Demo Day, the Association of Golf Merchandisers (AGM) held their Annual Retail Conference at the Convention Center. This is a place for buyers and merchandisers to network with industry professionals and learn best practices from some of the retail industry’s finest. The conference was a day full of speakers, round tables and a special product preview. The product preview gave merchandisers and buyers a first look at new apparel and accessories before they head out to the show floor on Wednesday. On opening day of the PGA Merchandise Show, over 1,000 leading companies anticipated the opening of the doors. Outside of those doors, attendees from all 50 states and 78 countries were welcomed by PGA Tour Player, Bubba Watson. The show floor hummed with excitement surrounding the celebrity appearances throughout the week. PGA Professionals, buyers, merchandisers and other industry professionals were able to meet face to face with manufacturers and rub elbows with some of golf’s biggest names. Greg Norman, Annika Sorenstam, Graeme McDowell, Mo Martin and of course Bubba Watson, just to name a few. Golf Chan-
nel’s Morning Drive broadcasted live each day from the show, giving golf enthusiasts at home a look inside the MAJOR of the Golf Business. Fashion shows were new to the PGA Show lineup this year, bringing the latest in apparel and accessories to the runway. The PGA Forum Stage presented by OMEGA was the hub for golf industry news. One of the hot topics was the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It has been 111 years since golf was last a part of the Olympic Games. A panel met Wednesday morning to discuss its return. The golf course where the competition is to be held is in its final stages of construction. “Golf in the Olympics is the biggest grow-the-game opportunity we have,” said Peter Dawson, president of the International Golf Federation. He went on to emphasize that the growth of the game is a worldwide endeavor. This is prevalent in that there were attendees from 78 countries in at this year’s show. The followings days were filled with countless networking opportunities and private showings of Fall 2015 product lines. Though it’s January and most clubs are in the middle of winter, buyers are booking Summer/Fall merchandise. One of the most common trends amongst exhibitors was MADE IN THE USA! Many manufacturers have gone domestic over import and its hitting home for many golf professionals and buyers alike. Another trend was lifestyle. It’s easy to understand why the PGA Merchandise Show is the MAJOR of the golf business. It provides the business with invaluable time networking with industry leaders, continuing education through seminars and hands on experience through product testing. The PGA continues to grow the game and in turn grow the business.

TURF CARE AND THE HOMEOWNER By Mark Semm
Spring is a beautiful time in the Texas Hill Country. Wildflowers are blooming, oaks are budding new leaves, and the weather brings the outdoor activities to full steam. I’d like to share some ideas and tips we use on the golf course to help your lawn and landscape reach its full potential. These topics include irrigation audit and repair, aerification and verticutting, and finally a fertilizer and pre-emergent herbicide application. Now is the time to have your irrigation system audited by a licensed landscape irrigator and make necessary repairs. Do not wait until the typical hot, dry summer sets in as irrigation contractors usually have a long list of procrastinators! An irrigation audit consists of checking all valves for proper operation, inspecting sprinklers and nozzles for proper dispersion, and ensuring the proper run times for each individual station. We have our audit complete by the end of March and continue to monitor it daily throughout the year. The golf course irrigation system consists of well over 2,200 individual sprinklers, countless miles of pipe and wire, 7 pumps and motors, 36 satellite controllers and a central computer in our office to operate it! An irrigation system audit will

help ensure water is being applied efficiently and to the proper areas without waste. A properly functioning irrigation system will help your lawn and landscape get through short-term droughts the hill country is prone to. Check out www.allianceforwaterefficiency.org/ for more resources regarding a properly functioning irrigation system and the efficient use of water. Next up is spring aerification and verticutting. Aerification is the process of using a specialized machine to remove a plug of soil and organic matter. This process creates a better environment for your lawn to grow and flourish by reducing compaction, providing air to the soil, and gives a place for water and fertilizer to infiltrate. Verticutting is the process of using a specialized mower with cutting blades that are vertical to the soil surface to removed dead or decaying plant material. Verticutting thins your lawn of this unwanted material, provides a place for new grass to grow and cuts new growing points. Many landscape contractors will offer these services or if you are a do-it-yourselfer these machines can be rented from many equipment rental companies.
Most homeowners on the Ranch have either zoysiagrass or bermudagrass lawns. These are warm season grasses that thrive in warmer weather from late April/early May through about mid-September. I would recommend aerifying and verticutting these grasses late April
or early May and again in early September. The golf course utilizes zoysiagrass for tees and fairways and bermudagrass for the rough. We aerify and verticut the fairways, tees, and roughs several times throughout the summer months. The putting greens on the golf course are
bentgrass. Bentgrass is a cool season grass and thrives in cooler weather from mid-October through about mid-May. We aerify and verticut the greens in March and October. Aerifying and verticutting are two procedures that will help the long and short-term health of any turfgrass. Last but not least is a fertilizer and preemergent herbicide application. Spring is a great time to feed your lawn and apply a pre-emergent herbicide to keep away those pesky weeds. A good basic starter fertilizer such as a 19-25-12 (percentage of nitrogenphosphorus-potassium) with a pre-emergent herbicide included is all you need. Any local lawn and garden center will carry a variety of fertilizers, herbicides and spreaders. Scotts Fertilizer Company has some great products and spreaders that make it easy to apply the proper amount of fertilizer and herbicide. A general rule of thumb is to apply 1 pound of slow release nitrogen for every 1,000 square feet of lawn in mid-April and again in mid-August for warm season grasses. This is the same time we apply our fertilizer and herbicide to the entire golf course except the greens. We spray liquid fertilizer on our greens in very small amounts (called spoon feeding) every 14 days. This allows a more controlled growth of the greens and a more efficient response to excesses and deficiencies of their fertility levels. I could write a novel regarding the countless fertilizers and herbicides available, proper amounts to apply and proper timing. A good resource for homeowners is the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Their website has countless articles and publications for a healthy lawn and landscape. These topics only scratch the surface of turf and landscape maintenance. There are many resources available to expand your knowledge of the various facets of plant care. Hopefully these few topics discussed help your lawn and landscape thrive this growing season. PLAYING THE COURSE
Hole #11 - 435 Yards - Par 4 – Handicap 10 Hole #11 at Cordillera Ranch can be one of the most intimidating holes on the course because of the lateral water hazard that runs down the entire left-hand side of the hole. It is an excellent hole that requires finding the fairway from the tee, and then hitting a second shot that must negotiate the water hazard and find the correct part of the putting surface. The fairway is ample width but is well protected on both sides with fairway bunkers on the right and the lateral water hazard on the right. The bunkers are 285 yards from the back Bear tees but can be carried from the middle Blue tee, which is the aggressive line to play and would leave a player 100 yards or less and a great angle for the approach shot. There is another fairway bunker long and straight away that can also be reached from the Blue tees so this tee shot requires a great deal of strategy. Two choices here: play aggressive or conservative, but either way the player must execute! The approach shot here requires great distance control because the green is so well protected by the lateral water hazard on the left and the angle of the green in relation to the fairway. The green has four distinct hole locations and finding the right level where the flagstick is located is important. The back left and middle left pin locations are considered the most dangerous because they are so well protected. A ball left short of the green to a front pin location is a good leave and a player has a good chance to make 4. The green complex has undulation and a small bowl in the middle left portion that makes this green challenging and fun to putt on. Putts that are from back to front will typically be a little slower despite the fact that you may be putting down the slope. Hole #11 is very fair and typical of many holes here at Cordillera Ranch because Mr. Nicklaus made it very challenging and yet playable. There is room to bail on the second shot to the right but because of the green contour it is not going to be an easy up and down for par. Walking off with a par 4 means the player has earned it!

Jimmy Walker is the answer and he’s off to another good start this year. Last fall I received a call from Christian Iooss, Director of Photography with Golf Digest looking for a location to do an interview and photo shoot with Jimmy. They were on a tight timeline and as you can see in the attached article; this wasn’t your typical photo shoot. I gladly agreed for The Club to host the crew for the day and coordinate the interview and photos. The space suit Jimmy is wearing was shipped in from Los Angeles along with an escort who was an expert at working with this valuable and specialized prop. He explained that this suit had been used in several big screen films and is a replica of an A7L spacesuit worn by Neil Armstrong on his moonwalk. Based on Jimmy’s performance so far, the 62-pound suit didn’t affect his mojo. Neil Armstrong may have walked on the moon, but Jimmy Walker will be walking the fairways at Augusta again this year during The 2015 Masters. During the tournament Jimmy will be competing for $9 million in prize money compared to 1969, when Neil Armstrong was paid $20,000 – NASA’s standard annual salary for civilian astronauts. Jimmy has earned a spot on the world stage today, but stays grounded spending time at The Club and with his “golf buddies.” We’re all fortunate to have him walking the hallways and fairways of The Club and it makes following the PGA tour more exciting when you have a neighbor like Jimmy to cheer for. As Jimmy says, his immediate focus is the PGA tour, but “golf buddies are forever”! T the horsehead nebula. Orion’s Sword. The Christmas Tree Cluster. The Sagittar-
ius Triplets. These are the interstellar things I see and photograph through astrophotography, my big passion outside of golf. Basically it consists of photographing distant galaxies and nebulae through a telescope. It’s more complicated than I can describe in a few minutes, but I’ve gotten pretty good at it and am getting better. My photograph of the Iris Nebula was chosen as the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day last Aug. 2. If you want to sample some of my work, go to jwalk.smugmug.com. Not to brag, but you might have a hard time believing a pro golfer shot that stuff. ○○○ you can’t look at the night sky through a telescope and not start to wonder about our place in the universe. The planet Earth amounts to a single atom within a single grain of sand amid all of the beaches on the globe. The vastness of it is something you cannot get your head around. Some of the things I photograph are millions of lightyears away, which means we’re looking at something in the very distant past. We’re talking objects that are estimated to be 13 billion years old. You gaze at these things and ponder them, and if you’re not in a good place mentally, it can be a disconcerting, sobering experience. You can start to feel very lonely, very fast. The origins of the universe are simply unknowable, and I say that with great respect for those with a spiritual bent. ○○○ you ask whether intelligent life exists elsewhere and whether aliens have visited Earth. Well, for intelligent life to exist, it would have to be in what’s known as the Goldilocks Zone, which describes planets that are the right size, the right distance to be warmed from a neighboring star, and so on. The nearest Goldilocks Zone is so far away, I can’t imagine that aliens—if they exist—could visit Earth. ○○○ tiger woods in 2000. Now there was a guy in golf’s Goldilocks Zone. Golf never was played as well before that and hasn’t been since. He was barely human, right? ○○○ whenever i get on the verge of losing my temper, I think back to what my dad told me when I was a kid: “Don’t act like a punk.” He actually put it in harsher terms than that, and it’s pulled me back every time I’ve flirted with a meltdown. I’ve broken a few clubs, sure. A busted 3-wood at Spyglass Hill comes

to mind. But the odd broken club is therapeutic—necessary, even—to keep your sanity. I broke a club in a tournament one time and, feeling guilty about it, was commiserating with another player after the round. He said, “Jimmy, never start to apologize unless you broke two.” ○○○ the tournament outside of pro golf I look forward to most is the Cordillera Cup. It’s basically the Developer versus the Land Owner here at Cordillera Ranch, just north of San Antonio. Mr. Hill is the developer, Mr. Northington the land owner. These two titans of the club choose sides, and we go against each other in some intense Ryder Cup-style competition played over two days. It’s a Hatfields-versus-McCoys-type deal that’s easygoing at first but grows more intense as it draws near. Insults, most of them good-natured, fly everywhere. A video, filled with pointed and funny scenes, is shown at the opening dinner. I’ve always been on the Developer team, and in eight playings, we’ve never won. Mr. Hill wants revenge. The next Cordillera Cup might not be pretty. ○○○ if you’ve ever whined about giving shots, consider that in my singles match in the Cordillera Cup, I had to play at plus-10. Ridiculous. I had to give nine shots to a stud who’s an honest plus-1. On a tough, windy day, my opponent played pretty well. But playing one of my best rounds of the year, I birdied the last two holes to win, 1 up. ○○○ the discontent behind the scenes at the last Ryder Cup was impossible not to notice. But I didn’t feel it was my place to comment one way or the other, it being my first Ryder Cup. I sort of kept it at arm’s length and focused on the good stuff. There was plenty of it. The team all got along real well, spirit was high, and the dissension was small. I kept my nose out of it. ○○○ best ryder cup teammate : Zach Johnson. He was always there, not just with rah-rah encouragement but excellent advice and the right words at the right time. Jordan Spieth was a close second. His energy and enthusiasm were a blast to watch. I was sitting next to Jordan at the opening ceremonies, and the way he couldn’t sit still reminded me of a kid. Heck, he is a kid. And then there’s Rickie Fowler. Watching the way European crowds responded to him, you almost couldn’t tell
what side he played for. Rickie’s appeal is truly global. A personality like that transcends borders. Everyone loves Rickie, and he loves them back. ○○○ the guy i wasn’t sure about was Patrick
Reed, because he’s so quiet and remote. But after I sat next to him on a couple of bus rides, I discovered he’s simply a totally confident person. He wasn’t overwhelmed by the Ryder Cup. It was reassuring, knowing how in control he really was. He was a sneakygood teammate. Patrick and his wife, Justine, hung out in the team room a long time, and everyone got to know them a lot better. ○○○ what bummed me out was that the sanctity of the team room was blown up to the point there was no sanctity at all. When we presented the [replica] trophy to Tom Watson on Saturday night, some nasty things were leaked about things Tom supposedly said. From everything I’ve learned, it was not a player who broke the code and divulged everything that happened. There were outsiders in the team room, people from outside our camp. I don’t know who it was who ratted us out, but I refuse to believe it was anyone even remotely connected to the American side. ○○○ there are guys you’ve never heard of who drive the ball better than anybody I’ve seen on the PGA Tour. Coming up, I saw short games every PGA Tour player would die to have. One reason you never heard of these players is because their games don’t travel. There were grasses they couldn’t play from, types of green complexes they couldn’t deal with, greens they couldn’t read. I’d put my money on the guy who can shoot 65 on Poa annua in California, then, two weeks later, shoots 65 off bentgrass in New Jersey. ○○○ swinging a golf club is sort of a throwing action, and even as a kid I could throw things far and fast. In Little League back in Oklahoma, I struck out 14 batters in a six-inning game, and we won the state championship. Today, at 35, I can throw a small football close to 80 yards—and straighter than I can hit a golf ball. ○○○ my first tournament as a professional was the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills. On my way to the first tee on Thursday, I hear a voice from the crowd yell, “Jimmy Walk!”
Hearing my nickname from when I was a boy stops me. I look over, and it’s my coach from Little League. Coach Bennett. And what does Coach Bennett say as I’m ready for the biggest moment in my golf life? “I still think you should’ve been a pitcher.” ○○○ nationwide tour, late summer, 2007. I’d just had a lousy finish in Rochester and was driving to the next tournament. After six years as a pro my career hadn’t gone anywhere. Funds were running low, I’d never had a job outside of playing golf, and I was feeling deadended. I phoned my wife, Erin, and broached the idea of the two of us getting real jobs and going with a different plan for our lives. She said, “The guy I married has never quit at anything. This is what we decided to do. You’ve got to keep going.” When both people are crying on a long-distance call, that’s rock bottom. The next week in West Virginia was the hottest weather I’d ever played golf in. Just putting one foot in front of the other, I somehow won the tournament. It didn’t turn everything around. After I got to the PGA Tour, I had trouble keeping my card for a couple of years. But when you reach bottom like I did that week in Rochester and bounce back, it shows that anything is possible. ○○○ everyone needs someone in their life who lifts them up, encourages them, tells them how great they are. When I was 13 and just starting in golf, I played with David Ogrin, a tour player. The way he hit the ball and the fact he played professionally made him a giant to me. Some time went by, and then one day I got a handwritten letter from David. In it he told me how good he thought I could be. How, if I kept trying, I could make most pros’ achievements look small by comparison. I can’t tell you how many times I read that letter over the years and how much it’s done for me. It’s still on my wall today. ○○○ the best thing for your game is a dedicated group of golf buddies. A regular game will get you to the course in lousy weather. It makes playing a priority. They keep you competitive, give you an incentive to improve. At Cordillera, there’s a regular group of eight of us. We mix up the games, everything from Wolf to mini-games within the group—oneon-four, two-on-three, one-on-two, all kinds of stuff. And when we’re done, we hang out. Greg Abrahamian knew he wanted to go down either of two career paths: medicine or military. Little did he know the two would merge once his journey brought him to Texas; the place where he met his wife, began his career as a transplant surgeon, raised his children and found Cordillera Ranch. A first-generation American citizen, Greg was born and raised in Fresno, California. After attending Fresno State, the ambitious graduate took the medical route instead of attending military school once he was accepted to UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. With the assistance of an Air Force Health Professions scholarship, Greg made the move to Texas. “So basically Air Force paid for all of my schooling and I paid with my life; 26 years with the Air Force,” Greg proudly states. Greg always knew he would eventually end up in the medical field, although it

is not something that runs in the family. It’s the memories of a regular past time with his father that Greg finds might have led him to his career. “I used to spend a lot of time watching M*A*S*H with my dad,” Greg laughs. “It sounds goofy, but that was probably my biggest influence in going into medicine. I had a grandfather who was somewhat ill and I used to go with him to the doctor’s office. It’s probably those two events – watching M.A.S.H. and my grandfather.” During his fourth year of surgical residency at Wilford Hall, Greg met Melody. “It was 1995, during the basketball playoffs and we were at Sombrero Rosa,” Greg recollects. Melody was coaxed by her friend to drop by and the two hit it off. But Melody mentions that Greg stood her up on their first real date. “I stood her up because I had to go in to do an appendectomy,” Greg laughs. “Then I persuaded her to go out again and here we are.”

Melody was raised by in an Air Force family, so a future with Greg was something that seemed familiar. “I grew up everywhere,” Melody says. “Every three years, we moved.” So when an organ transplant fellowship took Greg to Boston, Melody was right by his side and enrolled in graduate school in Boston as well. The couple spent two years there before Greg was whisked away. It was an unexpected series of events that led the couple to their new residence in DC. “I was the last of the Air Force transplant surgeons,” Greg says. “There were no more after me and they shut down Wilford Hall’s transplant center while we were in Boston, so we couldn’t come back here. The Air Force gave me to the Army basically.” But after a slow year, Greg pulled some strings and got the opportunity to come back to Wilford Hall in 2001; the year his first daughter, Natalia was born. Although there was no longer a transplant unit at the hospital, he was able to work full-time at University Hospital through a memorandum of understanding on loan from the Air Force, the hospital he still works at today. Greg and Melody were back in the city they wanted to be in, with a newborn baby girl; their new family was coming together nicely. Just as Natalia turned three months old, Greg was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Southern Watch right before 9/11, but returned a week before the disaster struck. In 2004, the Abrahamians’ second daughter, Vienne was born. Melody decided to commit all of her time to her children and became a stay-at-home mom. As Natalie was on the cusp of kindergarten, Melody began researching area schools and Boerne schools were undoubtedly at the top of her list. After speaking about the possible move to Greg, he remembered hearing about a neighborhood in the area. “I knew about Cordillera way back in the ‘90s,” Greg remembers. “Soon after it opened, a few of the Air Force senior surgeons had heard about it and so I heard about Cordillera through them.” After checking out some houses on the ranch, the family settled on a lot and began the building process. “I like the openness and the quietness. We’ve done all of the club stuff; we fish at the river, Natalia used the Equestrian Center for several years, Melody plays tennis, we have dinner at the Club – the only thing we don’t do is golf.” But Greg didn’t get to settle in for long before he deployed to Iraq.

Coincidentally, when Vienne was three months old, Greg was deployed during the Iraq War to establish the Air Force Theater Hospital north of Baghdad; the first Air Force combat hospital since the Vietnam War. He was with the first group at that hospital for six months during the Fallujah campaign. Greg states, “We were the busiest combat receiving hospital probably in the history of modern warfare.” Three months after Greg returned in 2005, he resigned from active duty and stayed in the reserves until retiring just last year. Greg is now a full-time surgical director of the kidney transplant program at UTHSCSA and University Hospital.

Although Greg is regularly humbled by the lives he saves everyday by performing pediatric and adult kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants since 1999, it was those months during the war that were the most fulfilling. “Taking care of injured soldiers and sailors and a lot of Iraqi civilians,” he begins. “That period was my most fulfilling to date and I’m sure through my career as a surgeon. And that had nothing to do with transplant; that was all combat related injuries.” One of the most interesting cases in his career brings the two together, but it wasn’t while he was on active duty. “A few years back, the Army referred a soldier to me who had been shot in Afghanistan by a sniper. The bullet had
injured his ureter and they were having a hard time trying to figure out how to save his kidney. Those guys remembered me from when I was on active duty, and asked me if I could remove his kidney and move it down into his pelvis and hook it back up to his bladder and bypass that injured segment of ureter. Something we call an autotransplant. I had done several of them in the past. We did that and he was able to keep his kidney.” Greg is one of the 10 total transplant surgeons in the entire South Texas region. And with the large volume of referrals from well outside the area, it’s an understatement to say that he has a busy schedule. For now, he is focusing on ways to make things easier on his out-of-town
patients. “We will probably do some more outreach clinics to some of the more remote areas that we get patients from, like Laredo, Corpus and The Valley. Just to make it easier for patients to not have to come all of the way out to San Antonio for follow-ups.” As for what the future holds for the Abrahamians, it’s all in the hands of Natalia and Vienne. “What’s next all revolves around the kids,” Greg says with agreement from Melody. Natalia is a full-time competitive hunter jumper equestrian and Vienne is a team gymnast who trains 18 hours a week. But between the two of them, it’s certainly nothing Melody and Greg can’t handle.

Working in the Hill Country definitely brings me back to my childhood! WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES/INTERESTS? I love traveling, the outdoors, crafting, and spending time with my friends and family! My boyfriend and I are very much food/beer/wine enthusiasts, so we love exploring San Antonio to find new restaurants and bars. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPORT? Texas A&M football. My boyfriend and I love attending the San Antonio A&M Club game watch parties and also tailgating in College Station with friends! FAVORITE SPORTING EVENT YOU’VE ATTENDED? For my 13th Birthday, my dad took me to the Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma game in College Station. This was my very first collegiate football game to attend so I was VERY excited. The word “horse” can mean a lot of things. It can mean your best friend, show horse, means of transportation, companion, business partner, teacher or playmate. For some, a horse may evoke a sense of freedom, spirit, independence, nature or spirituality. There are so many aspects to horses. A rider can enjoy the peace and quiet of a long trail ride, get their heart pumping at a show, or sit out in the pasture and share secrets with their horse. As the Equestrian Center Manager, I believe it is important to obtain a good relationship and develop good communication between a rider and their horse. More often than not, people tend to blame their horse for why they didn’t win, or why the horse didn’t behave right. Believe it or not, most of the time disappointing shows or training is due to human error. Horses are amazing because they put so much trust in their riders. They allow their rider to tie them up, strap a heavy saddle to their back, stick a metal bit in their mouth and climb on their back. Like any relationship, the best thing any horse rider can do is to connect with their horse and build trust. Once the horse and rider get on the same page and develop trust and good communication, any horse will run from the lightest kick, or stop on a dime with the slightest tug from the reins. When I was learning to ride, my mentor would tell me, “Horsemanship is not a destination. It is a journey.” That is a saying that I carry with me every day. One of the most amazing aspects of riding horses is that every horse will challenge you and teach you something new. Even the best of the best horseman learn new things everyday from the many horses they get to ride. George Strait said it right when he sang, “We ride and never worry about the fall; guess that’s just the
cowboy in us all.” Horses teach us to never give up. That is a life lesson that applies to every day of a person’s life. I hope to share my knowledge and expertise with the kids, teenagers and adults of Cordillera Ranch. I am working towards expanding the lesson program at the barn and getting kids more involved. I hope to hold a monthly get together at the barn, develop some competition and host Play Days, and teach kids and adults not only how to ride but how to work together with their horse. Caring for and riding horses is also a wonderful social activity! Some of the fondest memories are made side-by-side with a horse. Horses are a great way to teach kids how to manage responsibility, build teamwork, learn to overcome challenges, and, best of all, create a lasting friendship! I have had so many wonderful opportunities and experiences since I began my journey with horses. I have competed in barrels and speed events, hunter jumper, horse judging, reining, cutting, and team roping. I have had the opportunity to work for a large animal vet where I assisted in surgeries, learned about wound care, and how to diagnose and treat many common illnesses. I have also worked as a ranch hand and assistant trainer on a horse breeding and training ranch here in Boerne! Throughout the years I have had 70+ students and trained over 3 dozen horses. I invite all of our members and their guests to join the horse lovers at the Equestrian Center! There are 7 beautiful and sweet horses to choose from for lessons, trail rides, and even to lease! Our goal at the Equestrian Center is to teach horsemanship, equine safety, English and Western riding skills to children and adults to ensure a lifetime of pleasure around horses.

Choose your adventure! A safe and fun-filled experience for every boy and girl. It’s time to start planning for the summer to keep all of the kids active, learning to swim and keeping them playing outside and having fun. Enter summer camps at Cordillera Ranch, the time-tested alternative to boring days around the house. Our day camps at Cordillera Ranch focus on getting kids outdoors, learning to enjoy the many different activities found on the ranch. We focus on getting kids excited about being in the Guadalupe River, into the many parks and experiencing nature, rather than simply keeping them occupied during the few months they’re not in school. Instead of watching movies or sitting in front of a computer screen, kids are tromping through the creek, playing games and learning to identify insects and plant species. Last summer our Learn to Swim program experienced tremendous growth and we are excited to have Natalie Sales returning to teach all the kids how to swim. Our priority is

getting kids comfortable and learning to be proficient swimmers for our aquatics program during the summer. Our primary goal at camp is to have kids learn to enjoy the many outdoor activities we offer at the Club. Our campers will learn about the environment on the ranch, so that when the kids get home after camp, they’re dirty, hungry and tired from a full day of activity. Our summer camp staff strives to have kids enjoy the physical and health benefits of experiencing the breeze, the sunlight and the sounds of being outdoors. But aside from all the benefits of getting out into nature, staying physically active, socializing and learning new skills, when it comes down to it, camp is just plain fun. Our key staff are Accredited Camp Directors with the American Camping Association and all of our summer camp staff receives thorough training. Do you think your doctor sings the happy birthday song while washing his/her hands to ensure they’ve washed long enough to kill the germs? Didn’t think so, but maybe they should. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for hospital administrators to get physicians to wash their hands consistently and effectively. Xenex Disinfection Services based in San Antonio has developed a UV technology that will hopefully alleviate this conundrum. It goes by the name of PX-UV and is controlled by robotic devices eliminating pathogens that cause hospital acquired infections (HAI). A 2014 study showed a 20% decrease in HAI rates after using.
Invictus Medical
Named one of the top 10 startups in San Antonio, Invictus Medical has designed a device to alleviate extra cranial pressure for newborn babies called GELShield. The pressure often occurs in premature newborns and is prone to cause cranial deformity known as deformational plagiocephaly, leading to delays in development. This five-person company recently raised $3.8 million in funding for clinical testing of the devise and is aiming to launch the product at the end of this year. The small company hopes to hire at least 20 more people by then.
BioBridge Global and South Texas Blood & Tissue Center
BioBridge Global (BBG) and South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) in San Antonio has been an integral part of the groundbreaking research being conducted to fight Ebola. Dallas Ebola survivor, Amber Vinson became infected with the virus as a nurse treating a patient late last year. Now recovered, STBTC drew blood samples from Vinson in an effort to save the lives of future patients affected by Ebola. BBG’s medical director, Dr. Beddard explained, “What makes this research unique is Vinson is the first to donate whole blood for research. Her blood has the antibody for Ebola and has the potential to be manufactured on a large scale and possibly help treat many more people.”
The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio
The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is not the first to implement a cloud-based patient encounter platform in this city, but it has joined the pioneering few that have. In January, they announced that they had signed with the premier patient encounter platform, Ingenious Med. This web and mobile platform allows for HIPAA compliant communication between the doctor and patient, cloud-based care plan sharing, and a more efficient workflow. Needless to say, don’t be surprised if you see your nurses and doctors inputting all of your information into an iPad instead of a clipboard at your next checkup; this is the future.

I blame Jimmy Buffett for many of the questionable things I have done in my life: running away to Mexico at seventeen, moving to Hawaii at twenty-one, buying several boats, surfing in hurricanes, and, most recently, buying an island in Belize. Finding Margaritaville has been a life-long obsession.

As an avid SCUBA diver, I had been to Belize many times. My kids learned to dive there. We explored caves, hiked to waterfalls, climbed Mayan ruins, sailed the atolls, and fished the reef. We made friends in the country and fell in love with the diversity of the culture…and, especially, with the ocean. There are over 400 cayes (pronounced “keys”) in Belize. A beautiful barrier reef runs the entire 190 mile length of the country and it is home to the only coral atolls in the western hemisphere. The turquoise colored seas, abundant ocean life, and white sand beaches make it a water sports paradise. We love it.

Just over a year ago, I started surfing Belize real estate sites on the Internet looking for a little place that would serve as a home base for a thorough exploration of the country. The Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department is a very worthy recipient because of all the good they do in Cordillera and the surrounding communities,” says Sara Hill, Co-Chairman of the 2015 Shindig. “I was driving my son, Walker, to my mother and father’s house in Cordillera a couple weeks ago. He was going to spend the night with them, and he would be sleeping alone, upstairs. I asked him if he knew how to open a window in case the house was to catch on fire (I’m a worrywart by the way)? He said, ‘no, but we can practice that later.’ He thought for a minute, and then he said, ‘you know mom, we’re really safe though because those fire fighters are right across the street’. I thought to
myself what a sweet statement that was, and how true it was as well! We ARE much safer because of what sits right across the highway from our great neighborhood. The BVFD is like a Superman for Kendall County! The conversation that I had with Walker that evening came full circle about 1:00 a.m. that same morning when a ‘medical alert’ was sent to the alarm company

As many of you may know, Partners in Building is one of the newest additions to Cordillera Ranch’s distinguished Preferred Builders roster. With awards and accolades from the Texas Association of Builders, the Greater Houston Builders Association and the Houston Business Journal, Partners in Building has been exceeding customer satisfaction since 1986. After building over 240 custom homes last year alone, it is no surprise that Partners in Building is the largest custom home builder in Texas. Although their focus has been largely on Austin and Houston markets in the past, Cordillera Ranch is introducing them to the beautifully scenic Hill Country. “Cordillera Ranch actually came looking for us, looking to expand their preferred builder range,” says John Moon, Partners’ lead sales representative at Cordillera Ranch. Partners in Building

only recently brought their custom home building expertise to the San Antonio area in September of last year. With 30-40% of the residents moving into the Hill Country hailing from the Houston area, Partners’ prevalent presence was something they were missing in an otherwise paradise. Ultimately, there was a demand for Partners in Building and Cordillera delivered. Prior to joining Partners, John spent over 20 years in executive management in the non-profit world before deciding to satiate his passion for building custom homes. “I had built several custom homes of my own and had enjoyed the process and decided that I really wanted to work in that endeavor,” John says. “We’re doing exactly what I want to do here [with Partners] so it was a real fit.” Since John joined Partners in Building in September, they have be-

Now, as a part of the Partners and Cordillera team, John is discovering different families in the area and working with them from the very beginning of their custom home building experience. “Many of them own their own lot and some of them really don’t even know how to approach the process,” John says. “At times, I’m connecting them with land sales people or with a neighborhood idea because of my knowledge base of the different custom home areas throughout the Hill Country. Then I begin to introduce them to a process that we’ve been finessing and making ours.” That process is what has made Partners a permanent fixture in the Texas custom home building market for decades. While some
custom home builders will build a limited amount of homes each year, Partners has been perfecting their process that allows them to build well over that (remember 240+?). John elaborates, “Because we are building that many homes, we also have access to some values in economies of scale. So we’re able to offer back pricing without sacrificing any quality. We’ve got some real strategic elements in process and in our pricing. Simply because of our size, we’re able to negotiate opportunities that are very beneficial to our customers.” Another beneficial resource for customers are the tools Partners has at their fingertips to make custom home building a breeze.
