“Life is better out here.” You may have noticed we’ve recently begun a refresh to the Cordillera Ranch marketing campaigns deployed to our various print, online and outdoor ads and it includes this new tagline. For years, we have used “This is Living. Pure and Simple.” Although that phrase fit us for many years, Cordillera Ranch has clearly outgrown it and the statement grossly understates all of its unique activities and amenities. Aside from the array of stress-relieving activities there are to enjoy, part of what draws people out to Cordillera Ranch is exactly that: a desire to get “out.” Get out of the city. Get out of the concrete jungle. Get out of the fast pace. Get outside. For some people, being 20 minutes from millions of square feet of shopping and businesses in northwest San Antonio may be out of their comfort zone, for others it’s the perfect trade-off for the peace of being separated from the city by the ridgeline that forms Cordillera Ranch’s southern boundary. The Cordillera Cubs Junior Golf Camps are a great way to introduce youngsters to the game as well as for intermediate level juniors. Wine Dinners by Manny Ortiz, Food & Beverage Director, the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch
I have spent much of my career organizing and attending wine dinners. For industry professionals it is definitely our favorite part of being in the hospitality business! What appears as just a simple way of pairing wines can be very difficult to execute. Let me explain in simple terms – we all have different taste and different pallets. I often suggest that people should drink what they like and not what I suggest. That’s the challenge when we match wine and food. It’s all about our own preferences. It can be somewhat confusing since we are supposed to be the professionals. So what’s the big deal in doing wine dinners? I like to think of a wine dinner as a celebration with many friends and associates. Each time we plan our dinners, we get the benefit of tasting many types of wines from many parts of the world. It then becomes our challenge to pair these wines with food. Simply stated a wine dinner is a multi-course dinner served with several different wines. I’ve been to wine dinners where there is only one wine paired with each dish, however I am finding it quite appealing for our members to pair the same varietal from different parts of the world with each course. I find that the more that we can eliminate the mystique of the names of varietals associated with wine growing regions. Let me explain. A Sauvignon Blanc from California is the same as a

Sancerre from France. The difference is how each country approaches growing varietals. It’s the relationship of that wine to the soil and the winemaker. It gives us a way to provide a broader acceptance to wines from all over the globe versus a wine that we might be more familiar with. It truly makes it an educational and fun experience. Wine dinners allow us to showcase great wine and the talents of our culinary team. And yes, there is a formula starting with the reception. The reception gives the attendees time to visit with one another and is generally used to introduce the guest speaker to the attendees. Normally we try to get someone who is directly connected to the winery such as a vineyard owner or a winemaker however it is also acceptable to have a representative that is either with the winery or an industry professional. Following the reception, the dining celebration begins. Each wine is paired with a different course starting with lighter varietals together with soup, salad, appetizer, entrée and finally dessert. It should end with the crescendo of the best of the best matching the best wine with the best menu item. The result should be a culinary experience matching all the flavors and nuances of both the wine and the meal itself. Cheers and to your health!

PGA Free Lesson Month: Get Your Game on Track The best way to improve your game is by practicing. It is important that you are practicing the right things and taking a lesson from your PGA Professional should be your first step. There is no better time than the month of May to get started as it is PGA Free Lesson Month. Throughout the month of May, participating PGA and LPGA Professionals provide free 10-minute lessons designed to help golfers improve their games. Here at Cordillera Ranch our PGA Professional staff will be giving complimentary 10-minute lessons to members at the Practice Park on Saturday, May 10th from 9:00am-12:00pm. I would encourage people to come out because I know that every golfer has a few questions about their swing. It might just be one thing they need to work on or it might lead to more questions they have about their game and that is really where the learning process begins. At the very least, a quick check-up of their fundamentals is always beneficial. Slight adjustments might be needed that actually can lead to a big improvement in their game. Even the best players in the world have coaches that help them identify areas of their game that need work and improvement. This program gives our staff the opportunity to get to know our members even better and helps us build relationships. We are here to help them enjoy the game even more and getting better certainly allows for more enjoyment. We get the chance to showcase our expertise and our facility and let them see what we really do on a dayto-day basis. It also allows us a chance to give something back to the game we love. Spring Fling and Jimmy Walker Celebration The Club recently celebrated member Jimmy Walker’s three PGA Tour victories by honoring him at the annual Spring Fling Celebration. With over 180 people in attendance, the Club presented Jimmy with framed, commemorative Frys.com Open flags (from his first PGA Tour victory) signed by members and Jack Nicklaus. Jimmy currently leads the Fed Ex Cup race and his victories include the Frys.com Open, Sony Open and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Also given to Jimmy was a signed, framed letter from Cordillera Ranch golf course architect Jack Nicklaus congratulating Jimmy on his great start to the 2014 season. A beautiful ice sculpture was done with Jimmy’s initials and the Club also presented him with personalized and engraved bottles of wine for each win. Director of Golf Marc DeWall summed up the evening’s festivities: “I think so many of our members are first of all just genuinely happy for Jimmy. Most of them know the health challenges he has faced in the past and the work he has put in on his way to the top. They recognize and appreciate that this success has not come instantly, but instead a slow and steady rise through hard work. I think they can identify with that in their own lives. Of course all of us are proud Jimmy calls Cordillera Ranch home. He has been gracious with his time and often plays with many of our members. He is humble and appreciates everything. It has been a lot of fun getting to know him and now wish him nothing but continued success. What a year it is going to be!”

Golf Development Programs at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch Cordillera Ranch offers an outstanding golf learning experience. Our fantastic long and short game facility is called the Practice Park. The Practice Park has seven practice greens, five practice bunkers, a double-sided practice deck and twopractice holes. The practice deck also has target greens guarded with bunkers at various yardages for a realistic on course effect. The two-practice holes can give beginner golfers an opportunity to improve playing on the golf course while experienced golfers can practice various skilled golf shots. There are learning opportunities at the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch for all levels of golfers. The goal is to improve all students and work together to meet desired targets by utilizing a holistic approach in improving all aspects of their golf game. Taken into account is basic technique, course management, club fitting, golf fitness and mental management to improve their golf experience. We are always staying current or ahead of new methods while tailoring our coaching methods to enable members to make the most of their potential with a range of coaching styles, from the highly technical to the more traditional. Different aspects of golf development opportunities include: Private Lessons Private lessons are a great way to experience instruction that is tailored to your specific needs, goals and learning style. During the lesson, you will receive a video swing analyses (full or short game swings). This will help the student see and map out a plan for improvement. Almost all students will need technical work to improve shot consistency and predictability, two components that will lead to lower scores for both the long game and the short game. Private lessons may be purchased in a series of 3 to 6 lessons at discounted rates. A series of lessons will give the student a faster rate of improvement to enforce the newly found technique, enforce their strength and learn specialty shots.

Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf Screening This program is an opportunity to determine your physical golf strengths and weaknesses. Utilizing the TPI physical screening process, golf physical limitations and swing flaws are determined. A prescribed customized program will be assigned to you. The steps of TPI Golf Screening include: Physical Screening: The physical screening process will include tests that determine mobility, stability, motor control, strength, power, and cardiovascular endurance. Video Analysis: You are able to see your swing faults (example: over the top or a sway). These flaws are generally connected to a weakness in the physical screen. Familiarization of the Prescribed Exercise: To ensure you will perform each exercise correctly. The client will typically perform the program for 4 to 6 weeks. A Final Video Analysis Session and ReScreen: This final session will determine the clients improvements. Playing Lesson A playing lesson offers golfers who have already learned the fundamentals of the swing or more experienced golfers an on-course experience to learn more about how to play the game. Instruction will cover such topics as shot and club selection, playing from different lies, sand play and short game shots. For beginner golfers, after they have developed a functional shot pattern, it is a great opportunity to learn more about rules and etiquette, pace of play and more. Sessions can either be 9 or 18 holes. Clinics Golf Clinics are a great way to learn in a social setting. This is a great opportunity to meet other people with like golfing skills while learning the skills to improve their golf game. Currently, there are two weekly clinics available for members and their guests. These clinics are a Weekly Short Game Clinic held every Wednesday and a Beginner’s Clinic held every Saturday.
Juniors Junior Programs are available on a weekly basis. We have after school programs on Wednesday to Weekly Camps during Spring and Summer break. During all clinics and camps junior golfers learn the following skills: Fundamentals of the golf game, including basic swing techniques, grip and short game instruction Integration of the core values of the golf game, from proper etiquette to good sportsmanship—values which are important on and off the course. Instruction on and around the golf course to familiarize juniors with “real world” playing conditions. Golf social skills A link between fitness and golf to better educate the juniors’ specific movements needed for the golf swing. Junior golfer’s clubs are analyzed to determine the correct specifications according to their age, skill level and height. Club Fitting Club fitting is the most overlooked component in improving one’s golf game. Golf clubs that do not fit and match the skill level of the golfer can contribute to lower quality of golf shots. With the advancement of technology, one can be fitted to a perfect set of clubs or optimize their current clubs by using a launch monitor. A launch monitor measures the distance, speed, spin rate and shot direction of the golf ball. Launch monitors can be used to determine the distance gapping of your current irons and wedges and determine whether your driver, fairway woods and hybrids are in the correct setting. Superintendent’s Corner May/June 2014 The spring golf season is in full swing and summer will soon be upon us. Hopefully Mother Nature will have been nice to us in terms of rainfall. We are currently about 6.5 inches below normal year-to-date as I write this in late March. There is a lot of chatter throughout the meteorology world of a possible El Nino forming this fall. This would be helpful across Texas as generally it brings above average rainfall to our region. The multiyear drought we are currently in would certainly improve with the arrival of an El Niño event this fall. The golf course has been a buzz of activity, not only with spring tournaments and events, but with the planned course improvement projects. Johnson Golf, a family operated company based in Dallas, was selected to execute the improvement list. They were carefully chosen based on their established reputation, decades of experience, and hands on approach. The majority of the improvement work is on the perimeter of golf holes where the rough has struggled due to various reasons. These areas will be stripped of weak existing turf, new topsoil added, and new sod will be planted. A few mulch beds will be added or expanded under tree canopies where shade is the predominate issue.
Other enhancements include: • Several bunkers will be renovated to test various bunker liners and bunker sand for possible future renovations; • A new cart path will be added to hole #10 to better access the Nicklaus and blue tees; • A new pad near #10 tee will poured to provide the Culinary Team a dedicated site to offer food and beverages during special events; • Replacing zoysia sod throughout #14 fairway where there is bermuda grass contamination. Johnson Golf has anticipated a completion date of late June (I personally hope he is here much longer as that would mean rainfall delayed the project!). This will give the new turf time to better establish heading into the heat of the summer. We are excited about these enhancements to an already spectacular course. Summer will just begin to kick-off when Johnson Golf wraps up the course improvement project. Our spring agronomic practices such as greens aerification, fairway slicing and verticutting, and countless others will be put to the test. The summer stretch is stressful on turfgrass no matter how ‘mild’ it may be. Texas summers are especially stressful on our bentgrass greens. Bentgrass is better suited for northern regions of the
country (75-80 degree daytime and 45-55 degree nighttime temperatures). Cautious monitoring and many stress reducing agronomic practices are put in place to help the bentgrass better withstand the Central Texas Summer. The zoysia grass fairways and bermuda grass rough are adapted to the heat of the summer. They still require certain practices to mitigate the brunt of the summer. Slicing helps these areas allow what irrigation or rainfall we received better penetrate the soil and reach the roots where it is needed. Extensive use of wettings agents throughout course but especially on the fairways make our water much more efficient and significantly reduce our water usage. We are excited to have a summer intern studying turfgrass management from Texas Tech on board with us this summer. Many of our staff, myself included, completed multiple internships at different courses throughout the country while studying our field. We are proud to help educate the next generation of professionals and can only hope to teach them more of what to do than what not to do! Cordillera Cup Recap We had an absolutely incredible finish to the Cordillera Cup this year. Team Northington prevailed once again with a 47-45 victory over Team Hill. We have had one prior tie in 2011 but this one might even have had more drama. After the first day, The Hill team had led 24-22 after the Four-Ball and Foursome Matches. Sunday’s Singles matches were greeted with cold temperatures and a North wind that gusted up to 25 mph so playing conditions were very difficult. Results started pouring in and were back and forth all day. At one point, the Hill team led 44.5 to 41.5 and needed just two more points to secure their first victory. The Northington Team closed strong winning five and tying one of the last seven matches and it all came down to the last two matches on the course. Mike McCabe defeated Paul Robishaw for a 1-up victory by winning the last two holes and Dan Petrie defeated Zane Price 1-up on the last hole to push their team over the top. Despite the one-sidedness in the overall results (Northington leads 7-0-1), the matches may be more special and popular than ever before. We had some fantastic finishes this year with almost a dozen of the matches not decided until the final hole. Congratulations to Team Northington once again for a job well done and thanks to all of you who participated.

David Sanders loves rocks. His love for rocks and all of their differing characteristics ultimately led him to the study of them, and eventually into his career as a geologist. He and his wife Gail have enjoyed the ride that David’s passion of geology has taken them on, and has even finally led them to Cordillera Ranch. David’s young life in Wickenburg, Arizona was marked by his father’s passions. David begins, “Dad was a rancher, a farmer and a rock hound. He had a motel and a rock shop. Well, I had seen the farming and ranching side of things, and I didn’t much care for that, so as I was getting out of high school, I began to think geology for a degree.” Coming from the deserts of Arizona, David enrolled at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff because “Flagstaff had mountains and snow, so coming from the deserts, well, that sounded fantastic.” While David excelled in school, he saw quickly that his chosen career path might prove challenging. “When I was coming out of school, I thought I would be a volcanologist. They don’t tell you in school that there are no jobs in this field; they let you just do it and learn when you graduate. My thesis was about the volcanics of that area around Flagstaff, and so the Nuclear Power folks were doing studies on the area, and the only published information within a 50-mile radius about the geology was my thesis. So I told them I’d tell them everything I knew for a job. I mapped out the faults for them, and started that job in 1973.”

However, while David was still doing his studies, he met a particular young lady. Gail had come to Flagstaff from Southern California. She explains, “My folks went to USC, and being from southern California, I saw those mountains in Flagstaff, and so off I went. I met David shortly after arriving.” After a double date on their first date, the two were inseparable from that time on, and dated throughout their entire college careers. Upon their graduation, they were married right before David began his job with the Nuclear Power company in 1973. After relocating quickly to California, David continued his work while Gail got a teaching position with the local school district. Gail loved being near the beach again, and while David enjoyed his position, he began to question the direction he was heading. He explains, “You know, I was liking my job. As we were there and working for a few years and working for a company that charges a client, and justifying your hours and stuff, it became a bit cumbersome. When I was back in college I had been interviewed by oil companies, but I had decided I would not get hired by a fascist oil company. I thought I was saving the world by going to nuclear power, but I learned otherwise. I had been there three or four years, and one of the companies that had interviewed me tracked me down and gave me a call. It was City Services Oil Company in Tulsa. I went out there for an interview, and we were wanting to start a family and Gail didn’t want to work through the family,

because doing that in Cali is hard. The oil company offered a job that would enable us to start our family and Gail could stay home. We were terrified of moving to Tulsa, but we loved Tulsa. Within two weeks of moving there, we knew more people in our neighborhood than we knew in 4 years in California. I loved the work in the oil fields as well as it was so much more challenging.” Just as the family was moving to Tulsa, they found that Gail was pregnant, and welcomed Jill in 1979. Two years later, Stephen was born, and another two years brought them Judy. The family was loving Tulsa, but David began to desire a closer interaction with the actual drilling wells. He explains, “We made the decision that I wanted to get closer and more involved with drilling wells. I had the choice of going to Houston or Midland. Somebody told me that if I wanted to really learn the business, go to Midland. So we moved from Tulsa to Midland and found that it was even more friendly and family oriented than Tulsa. Obviously we loved it.”

As David puts it, “Oh yes, I learned the business.” After some successful exploration in the Midland area, his corporation was absorbed by Mobil. David was now the Senior Geologist, and he began doing international oil work. “The international stuff was exciting, and I loved doing the exploration and drilling in places that had never been drilled. It was a lot of travel, however.” Gail jumps in, “David’s travels were challenging, but at that point in our lives, the kids were growing up a bit, and so they had so many activities, and that took up a bit of the slack.” David enjoyed substantial career growth, but there was still another opportunity yet for the Sanders family. “One of my friends from Midland became the head of Parker and Parsley Oil. Scott Sheffield was the CEO (and still is) and asked if I had any interest in leaving Mobil, coming back to Midland, and helping them start up an exploration company. I met with them, talked it over, and I was more than ready to leave Mobil, just because it was such a huge company. So we moved back to Midland. At Mobil, I was
a first level geologic manager, and I knew a lot of the guys from the other geology divisions at Mobil, so I was able to bring 18 or so of them with us over time. We started doing some more international stuff, and bought companies in South America, Argentina, and Ecuador, among others. We set an office up down there, sent some geoscientists down there, and then did the same thing in Canada. At that time, Parker & Parsley was acquired by Mesa Petroleum, which was a big deal. It was Boone Pickens’ company, and they became Pioneer Natural Resources, and I was with them for the duration of my career, until my retirement in 2013 as the Director of Corporate Geosciences, with 140 geoscientists reporting to me.” While still working, the Sanders began to contemplate their retirement options. With their children off at college, they knew that soon enough, grandchildren would be coming, and they wanted to consider their options. David explains, “When we made the decision with the kids and where they would go to college, our oldest went to Texas Tech. She met

her future husband, Ryan, while they were in school, whose parents were long-time friends of the Northingtons and the Hills (Cordillera Ranch founding families). During her senior year, Ryan was invited to Mona Northington’s wedding here on the ranch, which was in 2003, I believe. We had kicked around ideas of where we wanted to retire, and we knew the Hill Country would be a good option. We had never really tightened our thoughts on it though, but Jill commented about coming down here and how beautiful it was.” Shortly after the birth of their first grandchild, the Sanders began to look more seriously at the Hill Country. Gail was pretty locked in on retiring to Austin, but David wasn’t. He says, “We did Austin, and there were some pretty areas, but all I saw was traffic. I told Gail that I had been in traffic for 30 years; I don’t want to retire into traffic.” Quickly, the

couple came to look at Cordillera Ranch, and David was in love. Gail, however, figured that they were in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, they found a great solution in the Di Lusso Villas. Gail explains, “Gary Peterson brought us up to the villas cause he knew I wanted a view. He took us over to the model home, and I was just wowed by the view! I liked the whole concept, the neighborhood feel, and the whole idea. It was neighborhood living in the country.” David adds, “I was just so stuck on being here, I didn’t care where we lived at that point. We came back for another trip, and we chose the lot. And from there, we hooked up with Gabe and his team at Pasadera Builders, but this particular model wouldn’t fit on the lot. Gabe went back and was able to make the house fit so that we could look north. He was able to make the house fit in the direction we wanted, and it’s been fantastic.” At that time, the couple was still living in Dallas, and a short year later, put the house up for sale. While they expected the sale to take some time, it sold in 3 days. David continues, “Gabe broke ground quickly, and so we moved into a rental, got the house going, and everything moved quickly. Gabe has been fantastic to work with, and even with the distances between us to Dallas, he communicated with us greatly and it’s just been a pleasure through each step in the process. We would come through every two or three weeks, and when you’re that far away, you have to have a lot of trust in your builder. When we were still in the decision process, Gabe took us to some of his other homes he was working on, and he was more proud of what was behind the walls than what was outside the walls. He was so proud of how well constructed the homes were, and we firmly believe nobody has a home that is better finished than what Gabe builds.” As the couple moved into their new home, Gail was anxious. “I cried all the way here. We knew only two people here, and I was so nervous of being out here alone. However, so quickly I saw that there is something to do here every day, and boredom is not an option.” David adds, “I got into the men’s bible study here, and they have a lot of the same appreciation for the community, and their bond, and their journeys that bring us all together is great. We drive the golf cart up to the club and just cruise around, and it’s an absolute blast. It’s such a friendly place. I’ve tried to explain just how the Cordillera Ranch lifestyle is to my friends back in the Dallas area, and you just can’t do it. It’s just a really blessed place and you have to be here to understand that.”

FAVORITE SPORTING EVENT YOU’VE ATTENDED? My dad took my sister, Becky, and I to watch him play in a Fed-Ex Champions Tour Pro-Am in Austin. Golf was always an activity that brought the three of us together and it was great to watch him play in that atmosphere. We also had the opportunity to meet Tom Kite, who won the 1991 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach where my dad was the Director of Golf Course Operations.

Also one of my favorite literary works, I admire the theme of hope and the fact that the story is not concluded with a typical “happy ending”, but rather a realistic one in which Nick learns go on, valuing the lessons learned along the way.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCE IN YOUR BUSINESS? This business is rewarding on a daily basis; whether you helped a guest create the most memorable day of their life, or produced the perfect wine pairing for a member’s entrée. I find that the level in which you enjoy what you do will directly affect how rewarding even the smallest triumphs are.
Favorite aspect or feature at Cordillera Ranch? That would definitely be the diversity the clubs have to offer. We have menus, activities, and outings that can cater to most any lifestyle!

In today’s competitive world it has become much more imperative to get ahead of the pack early in life. However due to greater stress rates amongst school aged children, especially in high school and collegiate prep schools it is much harder to remain competitive. On the premise of preparing students to learn how to be successful, working with horses can give kids the confidence and skills they need to work towards goals in other areas of their lives. Taylor Doll, the Equestrian Manager at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, has realized that horses can serve as the missing piece of the puzzle to help adolescents prepare for adulthood and to harness their energy, motivation and goals into a design for future successes. Taylor has combined her love of horses and past experience in equine facilitated therapy to develop a lesson program where horses are utilized as teachers for youth who are yearning to excel but are struggling with competition, grades, peer pressure, concentration and concern about their future.
Horses rely on their instinct and intuition, because of this they are adept at reading non-verbal cues, and reflect back to the individual with their responses. They are sentient beings with emotions, memories and empathetic abilities providing an environment that is supportive and non-judgmental. The horse is the teacher via cause and effect creating a challenging arena to process students’ limiting beliefs, stress triggers, self-management and other core issues that may be standing in the way of achieving excellence. Lesson activities may involve a group tasks using several horses or may pair up one student to one horse; this dynamic can offer a myriad of learning opportunities for both intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. One example of this may start out with students individually paired with a horse and the aim of getting “their horse” to pass between two marked cones. Then, as a variation or continuation of this same exercise we might have the entire group work as a team to get one horse (that they collectively select) to pass through the cones...only this time “no talking.” Suddenly students are able to determine the difference between solving problems independently and that success sometimes means reaching out to others for assistance. Developing this wisdom is essential to navigating through all of life’s adversities. Students begin to understand cause and effect, how what they verbally say (or don’t say) and physically do will relate not only to themselves but to their peers, classmates and family. This mirror-like heightened awareness that
results from interacting and working with the horses naturally provides guidance for students to arrive at a clearer sense of self, self-awareness, and improved self-confidence. This process encourages communication of conflicts and insight into problems with the goal being relief of symptoms, changes in behavior, improved social and vocational functioning and personal growth. These skills are easily transferred into real life by helping to develop a plan to nurture other areas of their life. What’s New in Clubs Village? By Charlie Hill
The Clubs Village section of Cordillera Ranch, which encompasses nearly 900 acres of rolling hills with spectacular views across the Nicklaus Signature golf course and the Guadalupe River Valley, is experiencing significant new growth. Since 2005, over 240 lots have been developed in Clubs Village and only 28 remain. What’s more is that of the 78 golf course frontage lots that have been developed, only 2 remain available. As a result, we are in the process of planning a new limited release section of Nicklaus Signature Golf Front lots. If you have played the course recently, you may have noticed some of the cedar clearing and underbrush thinning occurring right of the uphill par 5 ninth hole and downhill par 4 tenth hole. This is part of the preparation for the upcoming offering of these new 1+ acre home sites. These lots feature orientations favoring southeast prevailing breezes, views across several different holes as well as this view to the Clubhouse.

This enclave of new home sites is covered by some of the largest oak trees in Cordillera Ranch, providing privacy and a sense of historical connection with the preserved ranch. Topography ranges from flat to gentle slope from front to back of lot better allowing view opportunities. There is a panorama view effect from this peninsula of home sites that jut into “the turn” of the golf course; these lots are unlike any other golf front lots we have developed. JACK MONDAY COLLEGE United States Military Academy at West Point MAJOR We don’t select our major until September of our sophomore (yuk) year. I believe I will pick between Management and Defense and Strategic Studies. DSS is a major unique to West Point that some say is basically “majoring in the Army.” HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN AT WEST POINT SO FAR? My experience at West Point has had its ups and downs, like most kids going off to college out of state. You get used to living on your own, interacting with all types of roommates, and adjusting to the rigor of the academic load placed in front of you. West Point cadets have all of these things and more, especially if they have no military background. Initially it was a bit of a culture shock, but I eventually got the hang of it, however I still have plenty to learn. West Point Cadets all graduate in 48 months. It is an institution that teaches you to follow before you learn to lead. As I go into my yuk year, the plebes (freshman) will be recognized and be promoted to the rank of Cadet Corporal. With the change of rank comes with all new responsibilities and your duty to serve as a role model to the plebes. ACADEMICALLY, HOW DOES IT STACK UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS? It has met my expectations. I expected it to be hard and in many ways it has been extremely difficult. My first semester I struggled to maintain a “C” average. The time management skills that I needed to develop started to kick in my second semester. I am now obtaining for the first 6 weeks “As” and “Bs” in every subject including Boxing, a required physical course for plebes along with Military Movement (gymnastics). HOW HAVE YOU BEEN DOING ATHLETICALLY? I ran three cross country races, one at WP and also traveled to Lehigh University and Cornell. Unfortunately, I injured my ankle in the beginning of the indoor track season which set me back 6 weeks. During this time I had to add cross training and physical therapy to my already busy schedule. Training is going good now and I look forward to the outdoor season and this summer when I can log 60 miles a week to prepare for next season.

GOALS FOR YOUR FIRST YEAR? ARE YOU MEETING THEM? Adjusting to Military life and being away from home, learning and developing time management skills, but most of all I was not sure exactly what WP would be like and frankly I just wanted to survive. Last semester I passed all my classes so I have survived. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS AFTER COLLEGE? I have no way to plan this at this time. It depends on several factors. For every cadet at the Academy regardless of rank you deal with a lack of sleep. I was use to 8-10 hours and here I average 5-6. ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE THAT WANTS TO ATTEND WEST POINT? Start the application process early and go there for a visit. It is an amazing place to be and I can’t see myself any where else but I also do not think it is for everyone. There are already 72 gone from my class either by out processing themselves or being asked to leave.

By Meghan Hunter It is not that homework itself is so bad, it is simply that it interferes with other more entertaining or social pursuits. As parents, we are faced with the challenging title of “Enforcer.” The homework is assigned, gingerly wadded and shoved in the bottom of the backpack, and sent home. Soon after baseball practice, gymnastics, swimming, and piano lessons, our precious cherub faced elementary kids, awkward middle school kids, or sullen teenagers plop down on the sofa to relax and are immediately confronted by the looming question, “Honey, do you have any homework?” At this point, one of three things will occur. The cherub will immediately run to their backpack, take out their assignment and get to work in the designated homework area with a perfectly sharpened pencil. The awkward growing child, will tell you that they are starving and could not possibly concentrate until the pantry has been completely emptied, or you may simply get, “No, I don’t have any homework.” 95% of the time, this answer is false information and prompts “The Enforcer” to dive headfirst into the backpack in search of the wadded paper in the bottom.

Chapter two of our evening begins when the homework finally makes it out of the backpack. “The Enforcer” glances over the child’s shoulder only to discover that a sharpened pencil and a tidy, well-lit desk are not going to be enough to complete this assignment, the likes of which anyone over the age of 35 has never seen before!! As our child gets more involved in their homework, parents start to busy themselves with things around the house content with the fact that their student must be a genius to understand the assignment sitting in front of them. All of a sudden we look over only to discover that our student’s brow is furrowed and they appear confused. Their child looks to them as the “all-knowing fixer of all things,” and states simply, “I don’t get this. Can you help me?” Our well-meaning parent freezes like a deer caught in the headlights… Education has been changing along the same lines as our society in general. To put it simply, kids know more than their parents did at the same age and they work very differently than we did. With technology and information at their fingertips, students are equipped and able to take their learning to new levels,
TIPS Parents want to be all things to their children, but that is not realistic. Remember that it is OK if you do not know the answer. Try to help find the answer or guide your student to the answer through all of the resources available to you such as teachers, peers, online resources, and experts. Encourage independence and creativity, and stay positive. • Invite a study group over to your house. It may cost you a lot of snacks, but the kids will have support from each other, and you may learn something as well! • Visit teacher websites for clarification, information, and suggested resources. Make it easy by adding direct links from your computer desktop for
sometimes surpassing what their parents can comfortably help them with. They are also faced with a new level of apathy toward tasks they find mundane or not useful. The age old argument of mathematics practice not being worth the time because, “I can just use a calculator,” is always a fun Tuesday night battle! The reality of course is that most parents know the value of logic, reasoning, problem solving, and mental acuity that math practice provides, but how do we explain that to an eighth-grader more interested in what their best friend just posted on Facebook? As a certified teacher, owner of an education-based business, and mother of middle school boys, I am fairly sure that the above scenario is only a somewhat exaggerated reality in many homes on any given school night. However, no matter where your children fall in terms of age, ability, and motivation, parents share an overwhelming desire to support their children to the best of their ability and see them succeed. Here are a few ways for you to support your child through tough spells of homework, projects, and motivational valleys. Showing a genuine interest in your child’s struggles is automatic for most parents. The key is to take our interest and turn it into effective ways to support our child. Be aware of the fact that your children are unique individuals with unique interests. We as parents may not always be the best source of help for our kids. Be sure that you allow them their own successes and failures without projecting yours on them. Learning together and showing genuine interest is healthy and
each subject. • Don’t be afraid to admit you do not know something or can’t remember. Learning side by side can be very rewarding and supportive. • Encourage and support self-driven learning. • Point out ways that you use “skills you were taught in school.” • Maintain some form of academic pursuit over summer breaks. The “summer slide” is a reality. • Use on-line resources to help encourage and motivate your student. Everything imaginable is on the internet. Art museums, science museums, historical societies, math games, writing resources, etc. are all at your fingertips. Digging deeper into a subject can sometimes spark interest. • Do not project your struggles on to your child. Allow them to find their niche. • Stay positive even through the struggles. • Do not be afraid to seek professional help. Tutors
rewarding, but there will be times that parents should step back and “outsource.” Encourage your student to learn about subjects they are interested in. Self-motivated learners are likely to find connections in their academic pursuits that may spark interest in other subjects. Finally, remember that at the end of the day, you are not just the “Enforcer,” but also the coach, shoulder to lean on, and cheerleader. Help your student find and decipher information, independently produce something they can be proud of, and forge their own unique path.

The Little Blue Sliver THE BEAUTY OF THE HILL COUNTRY AND THE ATTENTION IT DEMANDS By Ben Schooley
When I was a kid, I would lie on my back amongst the tall grass behind my family’s home, a few yards from the little creek that ran through the field, and I would stare at the clouds. It’s a mundane activity, but an inspiring one. I could gaze at those slow-moving puffs of clouds and see all sorts of shapes and figures in them. Somewhere along the way, my thoughts would meander, I would slip in and out of sleep, and I would be refreshed. Greg Glowka has a similar slant. “When I was a kid, I would go to my grandpa’s place and fish in his old pond. And from as early as I can remember, I would stare at where the sky would meet the horizon, and it would just float my boat. I could do it day in and day out, and I do it to this day. So I’m always staring at the horizons, and it’s just something about the beauty of the Hill Country. And it’s always captured my attention and demanded my efforts. That’s my favorite part of my paintings…it’s putting in that little blue sliver on the painting…I could do that over and over and never tire of it.” A lifelong artist, Greg has been putting that “little blue sliver” of the horizon on his landscape paintings since day one. “The man that lived across the alley from me when I was a kid was the brother of Porfirio Salinas, who was a pretty famous bluebonnet artist back in the day. I was exposed to his art early on, and my other neighbor was an artist, and I would poke around these guys’ garages, and it made my mouth drop. And so I doodled. And doodled some more. In the 7th grade, I got ‘Mono’ and spent the entire time sketching. Somehow I got into those ‘starving artist’ shows, and I loved every minute of it.”

With such a strong propensity for art, Greg’s parents saw early on that he had a future with his creativity. “My dad was my biggest supporter. He would always tell me – ‘You are so lucky. You’ll never have to get a real job. You don’t even know how lucky you are.’ And even my mom got into it. She would always applaud my efforts, and it just motivated me to do another drawing.” After high school, Greg attended San Antonio College for graphic design courses. “No sooner than I started classes, I got a job doing graphics work for a local company. I was kind of a one-man graphics department. And I painted the owner a landscape as a gift, and she told me that I should be a fulltime artist. So she told me to take some art classes at UT, and she would pay me the same salary for half the workload if I’d take classes. So for 2 or 3 years I took and re-took classes on art. I couldn’t get enough of it. Finally, I entered an art show, and was accepted. At the same time, the graphics job went away, and so I was flying as a full time artist for the first time. Nanette Richardson Fine Art Gallery agreed to show my work, and they were selling.” After moving to Bulverde, Greg began to focus heavily on his art. “I’d run a painting into Nanette, and by the time I got home there would be a message on my machine saying that it had sold. It was wonderful. So during this time in Bulverde I really began to focus exclusively on the art and hone my skills.” With any solitary activity comes its challenges. “I moved out to Fischer a few years back, and I love the hell out of it. How-
ever, the loneliness is tough. It’s the hardest part of my job. I spend so much time by myself painting, and sketching. And the next thing I know, I haven’t talked to anybody the entire day. So a few years back I burned out. I just wasn’t inspired. So a friend worked at a golf course, and got me a job mowing the fairways. I think I made $8 an hour. I quit after a short bit, but I tell ya, if I could make $80k mowing lawns, I’d do it in a second. Accountants work their entire careers, then freak out and run off to become painters or musicians. So maybe I’ll do the opposite. After a lifetime of this, I’ll burn up and mow lawns for a living. Who knows!” Greg laughs. Utilizing the beauty that God has supplied him with, Greg works daily to capture it on canvas. “I’m trying to get more into Plein-Art paintings. It’s the act of taking your canvas out to the source of the painting, and doing the art right there. Normally I take photos, return to my studio, and paint. I need to just go out in the field, sit down, and paint. It’s good for me, and it’s good for my art. It keeps it fresh.” Greg is currently on display at the Nanette Richardson Fine Art Gallery and the Fredericksburg Art Gallery. You’ll also find him sitting in a field atop one of the majestic hills surrounding his studio in Fischer, fighting off the solitude, and enjoying the endless inspiration. “I love the hell out of my little house up in Fischer. I miss the conveniences sometimes of being closer to San Antonio, but as we all know, that cursed town is coming closer to each of us everyday. In March we introduced HeartBrand Beef to our Signature Dinner Menu. I was introduced to Akaushi Beef earlier this year and was very impressed with the quality of the meat and the health benefits associated with this breed. In 1994 due to a loophole in the Trade Act of 1992 between the United States and Japan, a small nucleus of Akaushi cows and bulls were brought to the United States in a specially equipped Boeing 747. The HeartBrand Ranch, located in Harwood, Texas is home to some of the original 11 Akaushi cattle brought over from Japan in 1994. Akaushi is a breed of Wagyu cattle indigenous to Japan, where it is highly valued for the amazing health benefits and superior quality of its beef. It’s time to get the kids busy for summer, learning to swim and keeping them away from the technology distractions that have become a part of their lives. With kids practically required to be on social-media sites to keep up with their friends, there’s hardly time anymore to interact face-to-face or get outside and just play. Enter summer camps at Cordillera Ranch, the time-tested alternative to boring days around the house. Our day camps at Cordillera Ranch focus on getting kids outdoors, learning to enjoy the many different activities found on the ranch. We focus on getting kids excited about being in the Guadalupe River, into the many parks and experiencing nature, rather than simply keeping them occupied during the few months they’re not in school. Instead of watching movies or sitting in front of a computer screen, kids are tromping through the creek, playing games and learning to identify insects and plant species. We have revamped our Learn to Swim program and getting kids comfortable and learning to be proficient swimmers will be a top priority for our aquatics program during the summer. Several of our key staff are now Accredited Camp Directors with the American Camping Association and all of our summer camp staff will receive training under the American Camping Association camp staff curriculum. Our goal is to have kids learn to enjoy the many outdoor activities we offer at the club, learn about the environment on the ranch, so that when the kids get home after camp, they’re dirty, hungry and tired from a full day of activity. Our goal is to have kids enjoy the physical and health benefits of experiencing the breeze, the sunlight and the sounds of being outdoors. But aside from all the benefits of getting out into nature, staying physically active, socializing and learning new skills, when it comes down to it, camp is just plain fun. Favorite part about working with the BVFD My favorite part is helping the public. I feel that being part of the BVFD is a great way to help others and give back to the community. Why did you choose to volunteer with the BVFD? I wanted to learn more about the fire service and see if I wanted to make a career out of it. Least favorite part of your role with the BVFD? Not having enough time to make more calls. What’s one thing that people don’t know about being a volunteer Fire Fighter? We train once a week so we are always learning and keeping up with the latest going on in the fire service.

The reason I chose the BVFD station to volunteer at is for the laid-back country atmosphere. Least favorite part of your roll with the BVFD? The worst part about being a volunteer is hauling butt to the station to get suited up for a Call that gets cancelled. What’s one thing that people don’t know about being a volunteer Fire Fighter? One thing most people don’t realize about volunteering is how satisfying it is to learn about the equipment and help out the community, everyone can help!
“Day Job” I’m currently a full time student at the University of Texas at San Antonio where I study Criminal Justice. I’m also a Youth Counselor at the Boys & Girls Club. Favorite part about working with the BVFD Working with BVFD gives me a chance to do something substantial with my free time. Being able to lend a helping hand to people in my community is more rewarding than I could have ever thought. Why did you choose to volunteer with the BVFD? Reuben Salas, my lieutenant, brought me to Bergheim. He taught me the basics of what I needed to know and it didn’t take very long for me to love with firefighting. BVFD’s station is also a few minutes from my house, it only made sense to go to a fire department close to home. Least favorite part of your role with the BVFD? Station clean up and maintenance. Large incidents require the use of a lot of resources, which means we have to constantly check them and keep them in tip top shape. That applies to everything, from the fire engine itself all the way to our personal fire gear. What’s one thing that people don’t know about being a volunteer Fire Fighter? Although we aren’t a paid staff, we operate in a professional manner. Depending on our call volume, the firefighters at BVFD can spend 10+ hours a week simply keeping equipment in proper operating order. I know that the officers (lieutenants, chief, etc.) dedicate much more time than that, planning training for us as well as keeping BVFD operational.

Marinate chicken in the juice of 4 key limes, 1/2 an orange squeezed, 2 Tbsp Canola Oil, salt , pepper and garlic powder sprinkled liberally. (Fresh 10 mins or frozen for 4-5 hours.)
Allow to rest for 3 minutes. While chicken cooks, spray a non-stick pan with Pam and add 1 tbsp butter, juice of 1 key lime and the other half of the orange, heat to med-hi and when sizzling, add the bag of broccoli slaw and stir only for a bout 3 minutes. Add S&P.
Put 1 cup basmati & 1 cup Jasmine rice in a rice cooker, add 1 cup coconut milk, 2 cups chicken stock, a dash salt, press Melt 2 Tbsps butter and the zest cook.
