welcome

Y

Your house is on fire. Fortunately, you and your family are away from home but your entire life’s worth of photos, personal possessions and family mementos are inside helplessly waiting to become charred remains of what you once had. Tragic and remote as it may sound right now, what do you do in that moment? What do you wish you had done before that moment? While you can’t ever be perfectly prepared for such a random event, you do have an opportunity to improve the odds that the response to an emergency situation is as effective, efficient and timely as possible by supporting the 2015 Cordillera Shindig and its sole beneficiary, the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department. It’s not just about putting out fires. It’s emergency response teams. It’s making sure that the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department has the equipment and resources to help stabilize you as a first responder to your car accident, heart attack or other emergency health situation. The fact is that if you’re in Cordillera or one of the other 10 surrounding neighborhoods in their 51 square mile coverage area, the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department is probably going to arrive before EMS, Life Flight or other emergency crews. The BVFD is so important to this area that the Shindig Board – for the first time in several years – has made it the sole beneficiary of the 2015 Shindig. Because of that, the 2015 Shindig, planned for May 2nd at the Cordillera Ranch Clubhouse, will impact more lives than all of the other prior Shindig fundraisers. The overwhelming response and support for the Shindig is evident with half of the tables already sold at the opening night event a few weeks ago. As a Cordillera Ranch community and surrounding area, people seem to be recognizing the importance of supporting the BVFD. Your contributions will be tangible; they will go directly towards the BVFD’s goal of acquiring a pumper truck, which will dramatically improve the flow and capacity of water the BVFD can bring to the scene of an emergency. This translates to a greater likelihood that they’ll be able to save your house or your loved ones in a fire; if anything is truly priceless that’s it. Furthermore, your contributions are tax deductible since the Shindig is a 501C3. Your support of the Shindig and BVFD is greatly appreciated and is critical towards reaching their goal of $400,000 for the 2015 Shindig, which will go towards purchasing the new pumper truck. Cordillera Ranch Development is stepping up to the plate as well in support of the Shindig and the BVFD: Cordillera Ranch agreed to donate $500 from every developer lot sale starting this past summer up until the Shindig event on May 2nd. Thus far, Cordillera Ranch has donated nearly $10,000 and hopes to donate much more leading up to the event, in addition to other contributions that Cordillera and the Club provide for the Shindig. Aside from the great benefit this event provides, it’s one of the best parties you’ll attend. It’s not the typical simple fundraiser; it’s an incredibly wellplanned, fun evening with live music, contests, a casino, unique prizes, 5-star dining and, as they say, a good time for a good cause. And really, is there anything more valuable than your health and safety in the event of a serious emergency? This is your chance to help the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department before the emergency occurs. Go to cordilleraranchshindig.org to learn how to donate buy tables or become a sponsor.

Strength in NUmbers Group Exercise Classes Offer Diversity by Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Director The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

22 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

The group exercise class schedule at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch has seen some growth recently. With the addition of new instructors Natalie Sales and Irma Nate, our class schedule is as robust as it has ever been. Natalie teaches Boot Camp and a Strength and Stretch Class for the Club. Irma Nate is a Zumba instructor and teaches a Step Zumba and Aquatic Zumba class for the Club. These classes have seen great success since their start up, and our members have been excited with our new class schedule that offers classes six days a week. These classes have offered some well-rounded diversity to our schedule that includes classes by Ann-Kristin Allen, Martha Miehe-Renard and Jewell Bowers. How do group exercise classes benefit our members? Group exercise classes can be of benefit in a number of ways. Group exercise classes are fun, and when you have fun you are more likely to stick with an exercise program. Group exercise classes are also a great place to get support. You may find that a group fitness program puts you in contact with people at the same fitness level as you, with similar fitness goals. A group fitness class may also help you stay accountable to your exercise program. Once you start working out with a group of people you may develop relationships that keep you coming back so as not to let the group down. Group exercise classes are also a great way to get exposure to new kinds of exercises. A group approach to weight loss typically benefits everyone involved. Studies have found that support from people sharing the same experience and struggles with the difficult task of losing weight (and keeping it off) can enhance weight loss outcomes. A group environment can provide a sense of belonging, social support and accountability which is beneficial in promoting exercise. A variety of group classes also helps make achieving your fitness goals easier and not so boring. What’s great about doing group classes is that you don’t have to think at all. You can just listen and follow whatever the teacher is instructing you to do. One point of caution with classes that involve resistance training: Some people have no business lifting weights, thus do it poorly and get injured. Just because you lift weights doesn’t mean you can’t get hurt or cause pain. Be mindful of the quantity of weight you lift and the exercises you are going to be asked to perform.

ZUMBA Latin rhythms pulse from the Club’s group exercise studio twice a week, where Irma Nate leads a Zumba class packed with the glistening bodies of our members seeking to swivel, pivot, and shake their way to fitness. Irma coaches her students to feel the music, be it salsa, meringue, or flamenco. “I don’t talk much,” she says. “I let the music move them and inspire them.” Zumba, an aerobic dance class set to South American beats, is hot in health clubs and exercise studios. “Latin music just tends to make you feel happy and good,” says Irma. “I can have the bluest day, be depressed, hormones ranging, whatever, and get in front of that class, turn on the music and I recharge my life, my soul.” Adds Irma: “When I put on Traigo Una Pena, a cha cha, my class just screams. They’re somewhere else; they’re not in Cordillera Ranch when they take a Zumba class.”

YOGA The benefits of yoga provide both instant gratification and lasting transformation. In the fitness world, both are extremely important. Too much time with too few results can be incredibly discouraging, and monotonous routines week after week can lead to stagnation. Yoga can change your physical and mental capacity quickly, while preparing the mind and body for longterm health. Yoga is something that anyone can do regardless of age or physical shape. Yoga is not just about working out, it’s about a healthy lifestyle. The practice of yoga allows students to be still in a world consumed with chaos. Peace and tranquility achieved through focused training appeals to everyone. Yoga’s deep breathing and meditation practices help foster an inner shift from to-do lists, kids’ and spouse’s needs, financial concerns and relational struggles to something a little bit bigger than the issues you face. Yoga helps relieve stress and unclutter the mind, and helps you get more focused. You’ve probably heard that yoga is good for you. Maybe you have even tried it and discovered that it makes you feel better. A regular practice can offer all kinds of mental and physical health benefits. Some, like improved flexibility, are clearly evident. Others, including mental clarity and stress reduction, may be more subtle but are just as powerful. When put together, all the benefits below contribute to an increased feeling of well-being, which helps explain why so many people find yoga so addictive. Our group exercise schedule changes slightly each month, so we encourage you to give a class a try and see the wonderful benefits that working out in a group setting can be.

2014 Ryder Cup Review

Team USA was not able to bring home the Ryder Cup this year but our very own Jimmy Walker played in the event for the first time and was one of the team’s best performers. Along with Patrick Reed, Jimmy continued his strong play by earning 2.5 points and playing some of the very best golf in his career. Jimmy was one of just four U.S. winners in the Singles Matches on Sunday. He defeated Lee Westwood 3&2 and was in control of the match throughout the day. He closed out the match by hitting a great 5-iron into the Par 5 16th hole and two putting for birdie and the win. “I played solid all day, no bogeys.” Walker said. “I didn’t give anything back. Lee played great. We just had a really good match all day.” On the first day FourBall Match Jimmy was paired with young gun Ricky Fowler as they faced Thomas Bjorn and U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer. Jimmy made a birdie on the 18th hole by sinking a 6 foot putt for birdie to halve the match. In the afternoon FourBall Match Jimmy and Ricky played World #1 Rory McIlroy and World #3 Sergio Garcia. The match was back and forth all day and eventually halved when the European side got a great break after an errant McIlroy tee-shot kicked back into play. On Saturday, the formats remained the same and Jimmy once again was paired with Ricky in both matches. They halved the morning match against McIlroy and Poulter in a great match that was tight throughout. In the afternoon match, they were beaten soundly by the team of Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell as the European side won 3 of the 4 matches and took control of the Ryder Cup. I spoke with Jimmy briefly after the Ryder Cup and both he and his wife Erin said it was one of the best golf experiences they have ever had and a fantastic week. “It’s a bummer losing” Jimmy said. “But it was an amazing week. Playing in this makes me never want to miss one again.” Much has been said recently about what can be done to change the tide as the Americans have won only two Ryder Cups in the last 20 years. There certainly will be change moving forward in how the PGA of America selects future Ryder Cup captains and the entire process of selecting the team will be evaluated. It is one of the greatest spectacles in sports and one that is still a great rivalry. Let’s hope that the changes to come will put our players in the best possible position to win. See you on the course, Marc DeWall, PGA Director of Golf, The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch mdewall@cordilleraranch.com | 830.336.4653

2014 Legacy Cup Cordillera Ranch hosted the First Annual Legacy Cup Pro-Am on October 5th-7th. Twelve 4-person teams competed with private clubs from all over Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana represented. The tournament was sponsored by Martin Apparel and Fennec Golf, two of the finest manufacturers of both cotton and performance golf clothing available in the industry today. The event gave us a chance to showcase the outstanding facilities here at Cordillera Ranch as well as our Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that is ranked #4 in the state. The golf course was in absolutely perfect condition and the weather was fantastic as well with temperatures in the mid 80’s. Teams were comprised of one Club Professional and three members, and the format was a Total Team Quota with adjustments after the first day. The event started with a practice round on Sunday followed by an Opening Dinner. Owner and developer David Hill was on hand to speak a little bit about the history of the Ranch and how the community and Club got started. Monday play was followed by a themed putting contest where fun was had by all. Tuesday play was a morning shotgun followed by an awards luncheon. Congratulations to the team from Oklahoma City Country Club led by their PGA Professional Tim Fleming. Special thanks to Barry Denton, Director of Real Estate at Cordillera Ranch as well as Gavin Heap, Managing Director for Martin Golf Apparel and Fennec Golf. While we have hosted a few great TGA major events in the past and will continue to so in the future, this event gave us the chance to invite some of the best Club Professionals and their members for a couple of days of golf in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. It was great to see how much fun everyone had and with the support of our partners it was truly a first class event that I know we will be able to build on. We are still somewhat in the infancy of our Club and it was great to attract members of other fine private Clubs that will go back home and spread the word about all that is great about Cordillera Ranch. Hopefully, we may even someday call a few of them homeowners!

Head Golf Professional Tim Fleming (third from left) and his team from Oklahoma City Country Club captured First Place Team honors.

Head Golf Professional Ryan Polzin (left) and his team from Royal Oaks Country Club in Houston. Ryan captured Low Professional honors with scores of 72-70.

C-STAR RESULTS The 9th Annual C-Star Member-Guest was held October 16-18 and once again was the highlight event on the golf calendar. A full field of 60 teams competed over 3 great days on the Cordillera Ranch Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The format this year once again had teams playing five 9-hole matches against other teams in their flight. All of the flight winners then competed in the LoneStar Shoot-Out to determine the winners of the event. The format has been well received by participants as it gives everyone a chance to play with numerous different people during the course of the competition. The weather for the tournament was outstanding all three days, with plenty of sunshine and temps in the low 80’s. Director of Agronomy Mark Semm and the entire Golf Course Maintenance team had the golf course in fantastic shape. After the practice round on Thursday morning, the fun began with the popular Horserace. This is an Alternate Shot format with four-man teams competing against eachother; mostly for pride but really just not to embarrass themselves in

CONNECTION By Kristine Duran :: Photography By Ben Weber

32 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

There’s something to say about the things we cling to as children, and Karen Hunke is proof. “I loved the trees. I loved the flowers. But most of all, I loved the animals,” she says reflecting on her childhood. Growing up in the panhandle of Texas, Karen fed her interest by spending time at friends’ ranches, so it’s no surprise that Karen and husband Phil are now celebrated land stewards in the state of Texas, as well as notable for their efforts in nature conservation. Nature was always a passion for Karen, but Phil had much different aspirations that began surfacing at an exceptionally young age. “When I was in the 6th grade, I wrote my career paper and I wrote it about being a surgeon. So I made up my mind pretty early that I was going to be a surgeon of some kind,” Phil remembers. With a love for children, Phil thought it fitting to look into becoming a pediatri-

cian. Once being exposed to the sick children, Phil realized that he did not like seeing the kids suffering, and settled on the milder practice of pediatric dentistry. With a degree from Texas Tech, Karen made the opportune move to Dallas to teach, where she later received her Master’s degree from Southern Methodist University. As a SMU graduate himself, Phil headed straight into Baylor College of Dentistry, before finishing his residency at Children’s Medical Center in Pediatric Dentistry. Just as Phil was completing his residency, a friend had arranged for him to meet Karen, who he believed would be a good fit for Phil. “It was love at first sight,” Phil says without hesitation. Evidently it was, as the pair wed less than six months later in 1974. “I think we were ready. We were both older, we were not young pups. We were both really ready, and when you find that person, you’re

there and that’s it,” Phil avows. Having spent his life in Dallas, it was never in the cards for Phil to leave, until one trip changed the whole deck. “We ended up going down for a visit to Brownsville, and we just went, ‘Wow! This is where we’re supposed to live!’” Karen exclaims. Phil had been going to The Valley for several years, so he was familiar with the area and knew several people. “I love to hunt and fish, so it a fabulous opportunity for me because that’s the ranching country,” Phil interjects. “We just up and changed all the plans and moved to The Valley. We started out in Harlingen for 9 months with a friend in his practice then went to McAllen and Phil set up his own practice there.” The move rewarded Phil with abounding opportunities to help the children who had influenced his career. “The Valley provided very special opportunities because there are so many

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 33

needy kids, and so much pathology. I had the privilege of having a lot of kids referred to me.” Phil was not the only one experiencing the great benefits of their relocation. Karen had the opportunity to work at the Gladys Porter Zoo, known for its triumphs in breeding endangered species of wildlife. She utilized her background of teaching during her time at the zoo. She explains, “I was on their board for a long time and did a lot of work for them by doing programs and showing slides and giving people tours. In doing so, I learned a lot about the animal collection.” And the animals learned a lot about her. So much so, that the gorillas began recognizing her on sight. “When I go back, they put their hand up and I put my hand up. They’re amazing animals. It wasn’t just gorillas; it was a lot of animals. And the people that work with them are fascinating people that don’t make much money, but they do it because of how much they love doing what they do. To me, that’s a blessing.” At once, the Hunke’s were on the hunt for a ranch to call their own. “I always thought it would be a real privilege to own land. To walk out or drive out into the fields, and say ‘this is mine’,” Phil expresses. They decided that they would know the right one when they found it, and six years later it happened. The ranch that finally won them over had been owned by the same family since the 1930’s. Due to generational clashes, the first generation decided to sell it to an outside party, much to Karen and Phil’s advantage. Over the course of seven years, they bought four ranches that were contiguous to each other to comprise what is now known as El Tecolote Ranch. “We put four ranches back together that hadn’t been together since the king of Spain owned the land; before Texas and the United States were established. And what we had the privilege of doing is putting land back together,” Phil states. Located between the King Ranch, the Corbett Ranch, and the East Ranch, its location is one of the ranch’s most outstanding features. Karen’s affinity for wildlife harmonized with the ranch’s surroundings. “South Texas is wild still and there are incredible animals and birds that live there that don’t live anywhere else,” she explains. A statement supported by how the ranch got its name in the first place. “Phil was visiting with the man that took us out to see it and I just walked off down a little road. There was a stump and there was a Great Horned Owl sitting on that stump. I walked right by it and I couldn’t believe that it didn’t fly away. It just stared at me. I thought, ‘this is one of

my ancestors telling me this is the place.’ So we named it El Tecolote which means the Great Horned Owl in Spanish.” This sighting would prove to be a foreshadowing of the Hunke’s future with El Tecolote. Shortly thereafter, Karen and Phil began doing research to discover what kind of animals and plants could be found on their land. In the process, they found another owl called the Ferruginous Pygmy Owl. Phil begins, “It was in the process of being put on the endangered species list of the United States fish and wildlife. After 19 years of doing research on it, we were able to keep that owl off the endangered list and have continued the research. We knew we had something special.” Karen interjects, “It wasn’t just because of the research that we did, but we always allowed young people to come in and do

36 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

research. Whether they were working on the leopard frog or inland pond fishes, we always allowed them to come in because we felt very honored to own this piece of land and that we needed to share it.” As a result of their efforts as ranch owners, Karen was asked to be on the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute out of Kingsville; one of the nation’s most prestigious wildlife research institutes. She was the only woman on the Board for a span of 15 years, until just recently. Owls were not alone on that list; they were followed by Ocelot and Jaguarondi, both endangered species. “The Nature Conservancy came to the ranch and did an inventory for a few days and found endangered cats and plants. They called it a critical wildlife corridor,” Phil says. “Just this year, we sold part of our ranch to the

Nature Conservancy. That puts it in conservation for perpetuity. They partnered with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, so they are now our south neighbor. We have that part, which is a little less than 30%, of the ranch that is now in conservation forever. That’s when we were given the recognition of Land Steward of the Year, which was very big to us.” Karen and Phil have received ample recognition in the nature conservation community, which they are grateful for, but their endeavors are for a much larger purpose than that. “This world is growing so fast and the population is expanding everywhere, all over the world,” Karen says. “We’re not going to have wild places anymore unless we protect them. This was our fourth trip to Africa, and we found that people were so intent on killing animals. I’m talking about the local population, not for trophy hunting but for food or poaching. Finally, through education so many of these people have realized that these animals are worth more to them alive than they are dead. When tourists come in to see these animals that you can’t see any other place in the word, it brings in money to their communities to educate their children, to have hospitals. They’re protecting these animals now. We have to understand that in the United States too. I want there to always be wild places for my great great great grandchildren.” Phil agrees, “You can be a conservationist and not be a tree hugger. In fact, it’s the people who really do the most for conservation that are the ones making commitments to owning land, funding projects, and funding education. You never change Mother Nature, but you can try to enhance it. It’s taking something from scratch, and building it, but always appreciating what Mother Nature had in place. It’s not our land, it belongs to our supreme being; we just have it for a short time.” After 18 years of operating El Tecolote, the younger of their two daughters suggested that the two visit Cordillera Ranch. Intent on never leaving their ranch in The Valley, Karen and Phil were resistant, but eventually gave in. “We came and visited and were just blown away by this place. I think as is everyone that comes to see it. We waited around for this particular lot, for about two years,” Karen recollects. A dentist that had worked for Phil for 18 years took over the practice when he announced his retirement, making for a smooth transition. “The big challenge was leaving down there, being here and giving that up, and knowing that we needed to have people working there and trusting them,” Phil says. Around the same time, Phil had helped an insurance

company get a contract for the State of Texas to manage care for Texas Medicaid and CHIP children. The company asked Phil to be the president of the company, which would be located in Austin. With their lot already bought at Cordillera, he negotiated with the company to be located closer to Boerne. “So they agreed to do that, and now we have an insurance company where we take care of about 1.4 million children in the state of Texas. I am involved with that pretty much on a daily basis, traveling all over the United States, working with state political leaders. I’ve always been there to take good care of the kids.” Since moving three years ago, the Hunke’s have found that what they love about The Valley is the primary focal point of Cordillera. Phil explains, “Cordillera is an example of how to build and keep the environment pretty close to the same as it is. This is not a subdivision; this is not a routine place of living. The developers and owners have done an excellent job. This is set into nature, and they’ve really respected it and I think that’s really something that makes Cordillera.” Their new neighbors were an integral part of the making the big move easier as well. “I am amazed at the friendliness of everybody. Nobody here brags about what they’ve done. It’s a new life; they’re here to make new friends, and to have an enjoyable time. The quality of life here, you can’t beat it! There is a club or a study group for everybody here. I’ve gotten involved with the Nature Club and that’s been fun,” Karen says. Outside of the Nature Club, Karen and Phil also participate in the Book Club and Wine Club. The couple is also very active with Boerne Performing Arts and the Cibolo Nature Center. The two stay active in and out of the community, proving that they are anything but retired. “There’s a lot of people here that retired, but they really didn’t retire, because they’re enjoying life so much and they still have got things to give,” Phil admits. For now, they are focused on accomplishing the goals on their bucket list. “We wanted to take our daughters and grandkids to Africa, and we accomplished that in July,” Karen says with a smile. “I don’t want to say it in writing that we’ve done enough traveling, because I would imagine that we will continue to do a little bit of traveling. Things are so good here, you hate to leave.”

How did you get into your field? As a young girl, I often asked my mother and grandmother to drive me through neighborhoods looking at homes and we spent many weekends visiting open houses and touring new developments. My favorite magazine was Southern Living, I would cut out photographs of the designs I liked and put them in a book to make up my dream home. After attending LSU I spent over 10 years in restaurant management and yearned for a career that afforded me a better quality of life. Real Estate seemed a natural choice since it was dear to my heart. I decided to get my real estate license and over the last fifteen years have had the opportunity to work in real estate sales, advertising, marketing, mortgage and title processing How long have you been with Cordillera Ranch? I have been with Cordillera Ranch since October 2013. After meeting Charlie Hill and his family last fall, I became intrigued with the development so I kept my eye open for available positions. What is your favorite aspect of working in the Hill Country? My favorite aspects of working in the Hill Country are the people and my commute to work. DEVELOPER

INTRODUCING THE NEW PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION GENERAL MANAGER, MATT HAIRE By Matt Haire

For many years, the Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association (POA) was a self-managed association, but a couple years ago we hired an outside management firm to oversee the POA. As of this summer, we have decided to bring the POA management back in-house and hired a new POA General Manager, Matt Haire. As Matt describes below in his own words, he has a diverse background of property management that includes several high-end residential and resort properties. We’re excited to have Matt aboard and he’s brought great energy, enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the POA. Most importantly, he has a passion for seeing that Cordillera Ranch is managed to the highest standards and also enjoys working with people in the community. Please join me in welcoming Matt to Cordillera Ranch. Charlie Hill

First of all, I would like to say how excited I am to be here at Cordillera Ranch. From the beauty of the Texas Hill Country to the opportunity to work with a self-managed Association, the future looks bright. Since I first arrived it has been clear that this is a place I could be for a very long time. The welcome I have received from the staff and homeowners has really gotten my time here at Cordillera Ranch off to a great start. I was born in Houston, but before I could walk my family moved to Denver, Colorado. It was there that I developed my love of the mountains and all that comes with them, especially skiing. Every weekend during the winter I was to be found on skis. Around the time I was 11, the oil and gas industry slowed in Colorado and my family moved back to the Houston area, although we did return several times a year to visit. It was the biggest shock of my life and I vowed to return to Colorado as soon as possible, which I did upon graduating from high school. I enrolled at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO for my freshman

40 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

year. I was in heaven once again. It was during my first year at Mines when my parents decided to surprise me and my brothers with a late in life baby, I now had a little sister. So I returned to Texas to be within driving distance of family and finished my college education at Texas A&M and Abilene Christian University. I grew up an Aggie and will always be an Aggie (as evidenced by my maroon truck with A&M license plates!). Shortly after college graduation I returned to Colorado, this time to the Vail Valley, working for Vail Resorts. The plan was for one winter season but it turned into an amazing eight-year experience. I immediately found a job within the Clubs division, working at the Passport Club at Golden Peak in the winters and Red Sky Golf Club in the summers. I even spent a few months on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands in Washington State where Vail Resorts owned a summer resort called Rosario Resort & Spa. After four seasons I decided it was time to find a career that would provide a more consistent experience and that is when the opportunity to get into Property and Association Management presented itself. This involved managing the Homeowner’s Associations as well as the vacation rental/hotel business. I started out in the Bachelor Gulch area of Beaver Creek at a property called Horizon Pass. I was quickly promoted down the hill to The Seasons at Avon, a large mixed-use property, and eventually into one of the most high profile Property Management positions in the company as the PM at The Lodge at Vail. The seasonality of the area also afforded me the time and ability to travel overseas extensively in the offseasons. I have traveled multiple times to

Europe, Asia, Africa, Central America, the Pacific, and Australia/New Zealand. In 2012, I decided that to take the next step in my career I needed to look outside the mountain communities of Colorado. I found myself returning to the Houston area and managing a large master-planned resort community on Galveston Island. Eventually, I decided that the Galveston area was not for me and that it was time to either make the move back to Colorado or head to the Texas Hill Country. It had long been on my list of desirable places to live and when the opportunity to come to Cordillera Ranch arose, with everything it had to offer, I jumped on the chance. My first order of business has been to oversee the transition from the previous management company to once again being a self-managed association. Instead of having to worry about operating within the confines of a management company and all that comes with it, my sole focus will be on Cordillera Ranch. One of my goals is to re-establish a personal connection with the homeowners and become a more guest-service oriented operation. Over the next few months, please be on the lookout for communications regarding our new website that will be equipped with online bill-pay and account balance retrieval for homeowners, as well as a general improvement in communication. We’ll also be spending some time focusing on general operations and maintenance to assure we’re as efficient as possible, while delivering the best maintained community. I look forward to gradually meeting as many homeowners as possible and please feel free to contact me anytime at MHaire@CordilleraRanch.com or 830-3363501, with any questions or concerns.

Targets in sight The Gun Club at Cordillera Ranch just got a bit more fun for outdoor enthusiasts! by Shane Reynolds, Outdoor Recreation Director The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

The Gun Club is no stranger to activity. On any given week, the secluded creek canyon on 200 beautiful acres hosts members and their guest for fun shotgun shooting and target practice. This fall we’re adding some new dimensions to the Gun Club to sharpen your skills in archery and bird hunting.

to guess how far away the target is and know where to shoot to hit your target in the primary scoring or kill zone. We plan to have some fun and recreational tournaments that focus on learning to be accurate at judging distance. Private and group lessons will also be available.

ARCHERY COURSE

The clay target game of Five Stand is very similar to Sporting Clays in that a wide variety of targets are thrown in an effort to simulate situations commonly encountered when hunting upland game and waterfowl. Five Stand is a great way to get a Sporting Clays-like experience in a small amount of space, with very little walking. No two Five Stand ranges are exactly alike, but they have one thing in common: There are five “stands” or stations from which you shoot. You can shoot our Five Stand course with one to five shooters. The Five Stand is also a great group activity. The Five Stand has six traps, each of which throws a different target. Participants shoot in turn at each of the five stands and various combinations of targets are thrown from the traps. Our Outfitter staff will advise the shooter of the sequence of targets so you know what to expect. Our outfitter staff will have the ability to change the menu set

Our primary Outfitter staff member, Kyle Gibson, has been planning the archery addition for over a year and he is excited to share his passion for archery with our members and their guest on the new course. As an avid archer, Kyle has single handedly designed, cleared and set the course that will consist of 10 different stations and offer shots of varying distances from 15-50 yards. A mix of Rinehart and Delta McKenzie targets were chosen for the course and will include deer, pigs, turkey, bear and other exciting 3-D targets. “I think it’s an activity that is catching on with a lot of people around here. It’s getting to be a preferred way to hunt for some people, and for some landowners,” Kyle says with enthusiasm. 3-D archery is a very addicting and fun sport. Any skill level archer can participate in 3-D archery. One of the primary challenges in 3-D archery is having the ability

Five Stand

so shooters can experience a wide variety of scenarios. In the game of Five Stand, you shoot at five targets from each of the five stations, for a total of 25 shots per round. Our new Five Stand range is a great addition to the already outstanding facilities at the Gun Club. It is a great range to get tuned up at for your hunting endeavors.

TOP RANKED Both BISD High Schools Named to Newsweek List

Both Boerne ISD high schools have been named among the top 500 public high schools in the country by a newly released Newsweek study. “America’s Top High Schools 2014” ranks Boerne High School 167th on its list and Boerne Champion High School 476th. The magazine reviewed data from almost 14,500 schools across the nation in developing a short list of 4,400. The top 500 schools were evaluated based on criteria that included students’ college readiness, graduation rates and other factors. The study was based on the 2011-12 academic year, the most recent year data is available from the NCES federal database. “Quality instruction, engaged students and involved parents will carry the day every time,” said Boerne ISD superintendent

44 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

David Stelmazewski. “Obviously, we are very pleased to have the hard work that takes place in Boerne schools recognized in this fashion. It is truly a reflection on the entire district because a majority of the high school students whose results were part of the study moved up through our elementary and middle schools. It is a win for the entire district.” Other Texas schools of note joining the two Boerne schools on the list include Highland Park, Lake Travis, Westlake and Alamo Heights. Full results of the study are available online at www.newsweek.com/high-schools/americas-topschools-2014.

STAR STUDENT

Tess Willis Age: 18 Born: I was born at Wilford Hall, Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, Texas. We moved to Boerne when I was 4 years old. School: I’m currently a senior at Samuel V. Champion High School. Favorite volunteer activities: One of my favorite volunteer activities is helping my tennis coach, Glenn Barton, with the Sports Adventure Camps for the kids during the summer time. I love to work with the younger kids and enjoy teaching them how to play tennis, or new things like fishing, camping and other fun activities that Glenn has planned for adventure camp. How did you get into playing tennis?: My interest in tennis started when I was 5 years old. During that time, we were living in a rental home in Boerne while our house in Cordillera was being built. Next door to us we had a neighbor that played tennis and he would always go out in his backyard and practice his groundstrokes on the backboard that his dad built for him out of wood. I was highly curious about this tennis sport. I would spend a lot of time outside and I’d sit and watch him as he practiced hard for about an hour almost every day. A few years later, when I was 13 we were new members to the Clubhouse here at Cordillera, I had noticed there were five tennis courts at the Club. I was looking for a sport that I could stick with for many years to come and I felt like tennis was the perfect sport for me. I still remember it like it was yesterday--I had met Glenn Barton for the first time and he taught me all the basics of tennis: point play, the strokes, foot work. Glenn even set up matches for me to play other people here at the ranch. I fell completely in love with the sport after the first lesson. I worked hard every day and soon I was playing competitive tennis and made it my goal to become a state ranked player. Interests and Activities: I enjoy drawing digital artwork on my computer, swimming, video gaming, ping pong, golf, and computer programming. I am also on the Science Olympiad team at Champion. The team consists of 15 members and we compete in almost 30 different scientific and engineering categories against other Texas schools. Awards and Accolades: Academics: I have made honor roll in middle school, freshman, sophomore and junior year. Tennis: I have received two certificates of acknowledgment for being eligible to compete in the 16s and 18s USTA Super

46 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

Championship Major Zones. I also placed 3rd at districts this past spring of my junior year in High School tennis. My current goal is to win districts, regionals and even state this year in team tennis and tennis in the spring. Science Olympiad: In the spring of my junior year I placed 1st in the regional competition for the elastic launch glider, our team won 1st in the competition and got to compete at state. What college would you like to attend: I am still compiling my lists of colleges I would like to attend. However, I would love to attend Texas Christian University, UT Austin or St. Mary’s University and play college tennis for these schools. I am also working to improve my state and national rank so I can qualify for a scholarship. It has been my goal and dream to play competitive tennis through college. Major: I would like to major in computer science. Computer programming has always been something I highly enjoy and would like to make it a career someday. Favorite Cordillera Memories: Of the many wonderful memories I have of Cordillera would be all the times my best friend Ellie and I have gone to the courts to practice, swim at the club, work out and even get “dolled up” and go to the club for dinner together. She has recently moved away to Dallas so all those memories are something I hold very dear to me. We used to sit and watch the sunset at the tennis courts, see who could run faster on the treadmill, swim laps in the pool and even carry on a full conversation while playing out a 5 minute long point in ping pong, as well on the courts playing tennis.

She also talked about her upcoming race, the Atacama Challenge in Chile’s Atacama Desert, in which 163 competitors from 36 countries would attempt to conquer this 6-stage race starting on October 5th. Paula charted her journey in this 155-mile race in a blog

54 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

which she offered to share as a followup to the previous story. After a week of brutal stages she crossed the finish line in 43 hours, 5 minutes and 36 seconds, which was good for 1ST PLACE in her age division! It’s quite an incredible feat and her account of it below is fascinating (and exhausting). Stage descriptions from the Atacama Crossing website are in italics at the end of each of Paula’s stage reports. Thank you so much for your support during the Atacama Crossing. I have

the best husband, daughter, family and friends in the world! The race was incredible - there’s something special about living life on the edge for a week, pushing hard, being uncomfortable, and finding a way to survive it. I don’t know why it makes me feel so alive. As compared to other races I’ve done, the Atacama was definitely the most difficult in terms of technicality. I usually have mantras that I repeat over and over again. Not this time. I kept saying “Pay Attention” - that’s it.

The terrain was so varied and difficult that you could not relax. It required a tremendous amount of mental focus. If I ran too fast, I knew I was risking getting hurt, twisting an ankle or blowing out a knee. The race was a wonderful experience. I met so many inspiring people. I made new friends. I reconnected with old friends. I tested myself. I passed the exam. I lost a few toenails, I lost 5-6 lbs, I lost any hopes of a foot modeling career in my future, I lost my way a few times during the week but I gained so much more than I can explain. I gained a better understanding of myself. I gained a renewed hope in humanity - people are good, people want the best for those around them. I gained a better appreciation of the fragility of this life and this body. I reconfirmed the belief that we can

day with one cresting at the top of a huge sanddune. Running down that dune was definitely a highlight of the week. Time: 7 hours, 38 minutes, 50 seconds. This stage moves by the Rio Grande River and Dead Valley to “Laguna Cejar” in the Salar de Atacama—the largest salt flat in Chile. It is a 28-mile course opening with difficult sections and finishing with a moderate 12 miles through varied terrain. Stage 3 (25 miles): I blew stage 3. That’s about it. It was horrible. From start to finish, I struggled. I was completely spent; it took all night to get the electrolytes back in balance. Others in my tent had a rough time with Stage 3 as well. I remember Lishe and I looking at each other and just shaking our heads. We were both wondering why we signed up for this race. There was no need to say it

Flats, and as the title suggests, includes sections through the Salar de Atacama. Stage 5 (48 miles): On these races, there is always one “long” day - usually something close to a double marathon. This one was magical. As with every other day, the terrain was extremely technical. I could rarely relax and just run flat out. The last leg was the hardest but the most spectacular. We had a huge climb out of checkpoint 6 heading up into the Valley of the Moons. I arrived at the top just as the sun was setting and a full moon was rising. It was exhilarating. I shut off my headlamp and ran by moonlight through the area. I finished in 13:15 or so and was pleased to be “home”. I managed to get down half of a recovery drink and crawled into my sleeping bag ignoring the dirt, tangled hair, sticky sports drink

accomplish so much more than we ever ask of ourselves. Stage 1 (23 miles): Day one wasn’t bad. They called the stage “Navigation by Rock” which was fitting. Sand, rock, sand, rock, etc all day long. Time: 5 hours, 50 minutes, 8 seconds. Today’s course was a 23-mile winding journey down through canyons and spectacular rock formations, with loose gravel and larger rocks serving as the running surface. Stage 2 (28 miles): This day was a hoot and horrible at the same time. I was really scared about the river crossings but after a few crossings, I was fine. It was easiest to jump right in, move downstream with the current until the far side could be reached. As I said in the email, the water was frigid - it would take your breath away. With each crossing, my feet would freeze then start to thaw, freeze, then thaw, etc. It’s hard to run on frozen feet. You can’t really trust them. When the feeling starts to come back, the pain is shocking. We had some brutal climbs that

out loud. It had been a rough day. Time: 7 hours, 33 minutes, 7 seconds. The 3rd stage is a 25-mile course through the flat area of the salar and through Laguna Liona. Competitors will see a total elevation gain of 261 meters and a loss of 150 meters. Stage 4 (27 miles): While Stage 3 was the worst for me, Stage 4 may have been the best. The salt flats are notoriously difficult but I enjoyed it. You can actually see the heat coming off the desert. It creates a shiny haze that you can see on the horizon. The Atacama is unbelievably dry. One of the race teams had a small weather station which said the humidity was under 2%. It feels like you’re in a microwave oven being cooked from the inside out. The dryness is indescribable. No amount of fluid intake will make it go away. “Pay attention, pay attention, pay attention”. There’s no room to let your guard down out there. Time: 7 hours, 44 minutes, and 45 seconds. Stage 4, which is 27 miles, is called The Infamous Salt

down my shirt, and sand everywhere. Thankfully, there is a day of rest after this stage. Time: 13 hours, 18 minutes, 11 seconds. Only 129 of the 160 competitors that started the Atacama are still in the race and battling through this 48-mile stage which runs through moon-like valleys to sand dunes and endless plateaus whitened by salt crust and pure Atacama Desert. The final competitor finished this stage in 24 hours 10 minutes. Stage 6 (6 miles): The last day is a celebration from start to finish. There were hugs all around and tons of photos taken, then all of my tentmates and I headed to the closest bar to celebrate. I skipped the alcohol but ate half of a huge pizza without problem. Time: 1 hour, 35 seconds. The final stage is called Final Footsteps to San Pedro which runs through the Moon Valley and then into the square of San Pedro de Atacama for the finish line. Congratulations to Paula not only for finishing the race but for winning her division in this event.

Performing arts

In the winter of 2012, the art scene in Boerne exploded with Boerne Performing Arts presenting their first ever concert, featuring a stellar ensemble known throughout the world…the Vienna Boys Choir. The concert was a sellout and it didn’t stop there! The new presenting arts organization continued with TAO (Japanese Taiko drummers) and the exhilarating Canadian fiddle and dance show, Bowfire! As with the Vienna Boys Choir, TAO and Bowfire were both sellouts. Boerne Performing Arts was here to stay! Following the success of their initial season, Boerne Performing Arts continues to bring national and international artists to Boerne as they gain a reputation for “big events in a small town.” The upcoming 2015 Season will continue this tradition with spectacular performances by Canadian Brass (Canada), New Shanghai Circus (China) and Neil Berg’s 102 Years of Broadway (New York City). Kicking off the 2015 Season will be the world’s most recorded chamber ensemble, Canadian Brass, bringing their internationally acclaimed perfor-

mance to the Boerne stage on January 30. Dubbed “the world’s leading brass ensemble” by The Washington Post, the five tremendous brass musicians are the masters of concert presentations, entertainment, virtuosity and most of all, fun! While their American debut in 1975 was at Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), even more notable is their first performance at Carnegie Hall where they were the first chamber ensemble to solo the Carnegie Main Stage. Five players, 132 releases, 7,000 appearances, and 60,000 online followers; each of their concerts will showcase the full range of repertoire from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to new compositions and arrangements created especially for them, their music is central and performed with utmost dedication, skill and excellence. Canadian Brass are exclusive artists for ConnSelmer and perform on 24K gold-plated Artisan Bach and Conn horns. Direct from China, the troupe of The New Shanghai Circus features astonishing athletes that will defy gravity and execute breathtaking feats as they stretch the limits of human ability in this

spellbinding show. This event will be a family-friendly evening and endorses the Boerne Performing Arts philosophy of providing a broad variety of highquality performances. You will marvel not only at the amazing athletic ability of the performers, but at the grace and beauty of the performance. This most dazzling company of 40 tumblers, cyclists, martial artists and acrobats will mesmerize and mystify audiences as they tumble onto the Boerne Champion stage for an evening of pure entertainment. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as these talented acrobats top each other with one amazing feat after another, in this celebration of Chinese history and culture. Celebrate the exotic wonders of China and enjoy the dramatic interpretation of classic Chinese dance and physical performance art on Thursday, February 26. Back by popular demand, Neil Berg’s 102 Years of Broadway will present their blockbuster show on Sunday, March 15. Their first appearance in Boerne, as part of the Kerrville Performing Arts Series in 2011, received accolades from concert-

goers and has been the number one request for a repeat performance. Your request has been answered! This brilliant cast of five Broadway stars performed the same hits on both Broadway and the National Touring Companies of “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Les Miserable’s”, “CATS”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, and “Jekyll & Hyde”. Accompanied by an all-star New York band, they will dazzle concertgoers. Led by composer/pianist Neil Berg, this storyline of hits covers the gamut of Broadway musical blockbusters. Fast forward to 2015, as Boerne Performing Arts continues its commitment of bringing the world of professional performing arts to the Texas Hill Country for their fourth season. Book your reservation now for a picture-perfect evening. Fine dining at one of Boerne’s eclectic mix of restaurants or the Cordillera Ranch Clubhouse, a blockbuster show in a state-of-the-art auditorium (with no parking fees), and a pleasant evening strolling through the oak-lined natural area surrounding the Boerne Champion Auditorium.

Boerne Performing Arts FOR KIDS is an educational program with all funds raised by the all-volunteer Board of Boerne Performing Arts. COMMUNITY

Cordillera Gets Emergency Helipad By Rachel Trevino

Cordillera residents now have a new sense of security with the emergency services helipad located in the heart of the community at the intersection of Rio Cordillera and Cordillera Trace. The board of the Cordillera Ranch Shindig (CRS) presented the idea for the helipad in conjunction with the kickoff to Shindig 2015. Others quickly joined with CRS in getting the emergency helipad idea off the ground! “The intersection is central to the ranch community and offers plenty of room for helicopter landings,” says J.W. Pieper, Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department Treasurer and Cordillera resident. “The helipad will save critical time in an emergency because it will reduce transport times from many areas of the community by at least 5 to 7 minutes,” says Hill. The current helicopter landing site is located at the Bergheim Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD). “The helipad will greatly enhance the health and safety of

The helipad will greatly enhance the health and safety of Cordillera residents Cordillera residents,” states Hill. The CRS, Cordillera Ranch, and the BVFD are truly partners in creating this tremendous asset to the community. Cordillera has joined forces with the BVFD and three life flight organizations to ensure the helipad meets the requirements necessary for air ambulances. The addition of this helipad is one of the many initiatives that the Shindig and Cordillera Ranch have worked together on to improve this community. HOLIDAYGIFTGUIDE Ahhhh the Holidays! November and December bring cooler weather (hopefully). They bring pumpkins and Christmas lights, parties and carols (my favorite). They bring time together with those we may not often see, and smile and laughter from children in anticipation of what is to come on Christmas morning. They also bring gifts…not just gifts received, but gifts to give. AHHHHH! Gift giving! It’s wonderful to receive gifts, but if you’re anything like me, it’s STRESSFUL to

60 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

purchase them. What to give? Will it be meaningful? Will they like it? Is it the right color, size, shape…I could go on and on. And that’s just for the women in my life. Women that I look, think, and dress like! What about the other species…men? What do I get for the men in my life? That question may remain for me until December 24th, but here’s my attempt to help relieve some of your stress this Holiday season. I hope these ideas help to check at least one man off you list this year!

BILLIARD FACTORY

I gave my husband a shuffleboard table from Billiard Factory for Christmas two years ago. Not only is it good for him and his buddies to have a little friendly competition, we also play on it as a family! We have father/daughter, mother/son matches (I’m sure you don’t have to ask who wins)! The Ellington Shuffleboard Table will charm any game room with its combination of classic traditional style, sturdy quality construction and affordable pricing. It is an excellent home entertainment solution for family and friends to come together to play a timeless game; an American staple of quality recreational fun. And for the kid in every man, there’s also Foosball! At less than 5 feet long, this entertainment package could fit easily into any section of your game room. The manual scorekeepers, dual-side ball returns, and dual-side ball drop entries make competing an ease. You can find these in San Antonio at Billiard Factory 203 N Loop 1604 W, San Antonio, TX 78232 (210) 490-1426

CALAMITY JANES

I think a sculpture is a great gift for any guy in your life. Place it on a desk or decorate the shelf; either way this gift will be meaningful for generations to come. I’m an Aggie, but my children are part Longhorn, so I’m a little partial to this guy from Calamity Jane’s in Boerne. This distinctive double steers statue is crafted from ceramic with a “wood” hand finish. Artists have mastered the finish technique creating the carved wood look on a sturdy ceramic piece. Be careful ladies, you’ll get into all kinds of trouble in this store! There are so many great home accessories and furnishings, but since this is all about the guys I had to stick with a more manly item! 404 S Main St, Boerne, TX 78006 Phone:(830) 249-0081 www.calamityjanestradingco.com

is a saltwater sportsman’s dream destination. Fly fisherman can wrangle with bonefish, permit, and tarpon right from the island or in the neighboring flats. Reef fishing or deep sea excursions for bill fish use the island’s 35’ Cabo sport fishing boat with the best guides in the country. Or if you want to try something new, the

staff will teach you the addictive sport of snorkel spearfishing and you can spend hours in the water hunting the big one. Combine all these types of fishing for a truly unforgettable experience. Get all the details at www.royalbelize.com.

TEXAS TREASURES FINE ART

Who doesn’t love a good piece of art? Texas Treasures is stocked with, well, treasures! I like this piece in particular because I think everyone can find sentiment in a particular landscape or certain part of the world you may be partial to. This Bill Zaner piece is an original oil on canvas of West Texas. It is painted in natural light so it looks different depending on the time of day. So you’re really getting several different paintings in one! Whatever suits your fancy, and with the help of owner Johny Rosa, I’m certain you’ll find it in the Texas Treasure gallery. 605 South Main Street • Boerne, TX 78006 830 816 5335 www.texastreasuresfineart.com

HOME TOUR

Que Bella By Damon Christofilis

When Jim and Linda Parmigiano finally decided it was time to retire and move to the Texas Hill Country from the Woodlands, their travels landed them in Cordillera Ranch. Specifically, on the Cordillera golf course sitting perched high above the 14th green with breath-taking views and cooling breezes. The Parmigiano’s professional careers have led them to live outside the United States off and on for many years. They have traveled extensively across many regions and have accumulated an array of different artifacts, pieces and furniture that they would be featuring in their new home. When I first sat down with them, it was not hard to peg down the regional influence they wanted to replicate in their new home on Muirfield. They both knew they wanted an authentic feeling Spanish Hacienda.

64 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

To that end, I enlisted the talented duo of architect Gustavo Arredondo and decorator Barbara Burger whom he had collaborated with on several homes that featured a Spanish flavor. Adding Burdick & Christofilis’ Project Manager Jason Hurt, an employee of over 12 years, into the mix completed the core team that would be in charge of making Jim and Linda’s dreams come true. As the design process commenced, I had a pretty clear idea of how the pieces of the puzzle would lay out on the rolling, one-acre lot. The reality of their homesite was that it had over 12 feet of fall from the front to the back of their building envelope. However, Linda had her equally clear idea and they were not necessarily the same as her builder’s. Linda envisioned a home with an upstairs balcony,

CordilleraRanchLiving.com | 65

over a Game Room, accessible by a set of stairs which would possibly achieve maximum view opportunities. I offered that the views would be spectacular from all areas of a future, single-story home and that going upstairs was not necessary. Linda was not so easily sold on this concept. In an attempt to demonstrate the reality of what their potential sightlines and views would be from their future patios and pool deck, I had our foundation contractor build a set of stairs leading to an observation deck constructed on their lot at a location and height that would exemplify the possibilities. Getting Linda up on that deck was truly an “ah ha” moment in the process and one they all remember fondly. With Linda’s blessings, the design was then begun on a one-story home with an attached, but separate, Casita. One of the key design considerations that I encouraged the Parmigiano’s and Gustavo to plan around was to make the layout receptive to the prevailing southeast breezes which make the sultry summer days here a little easier to handle. This was also a key design consideration of Mr. Nicklaus’ several years earlier when he mapped out the fabulous Cordillera Ranch Golf Course which was already in place at the time of planning out the home. Before the design process was even commenced, the Parmigiano’s had assembled quite a lengthy list of desired room sizes and things that they wanted to accomplish in the new home. This information was very helpful to Gustavo in achieving the preliminary versions of the future floor plan. As well, early on in the design process, I had Barbara in on the meetings to assist with anything that she felt might make the plan better. Those conversations led the Team to make design decisions that were easier to incorporate before construction would begin. Once the floor plan was fairly tight and to Jim and Linda’s liking, the conversation moved to the exact details of what the specifications of the new home would entail. The formulation and refinement of how the Parmigiano’s specifications would be customized to their desires was a critical part of the process. It is critical for the builder and the client to have a shared understanding of exactly what is going to be delivered in the construction process and for me the specifications are where that happens. This document lets the clients

66 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

The “Casita,” which is separate from the Main House, is really a fun-themed Game Room with multiple TVs, a pool table, shuffleboard as well as a full bath in the event that it hosts overnight guests. The multiple TVs are a must in the event that one of the many Texas college teams the Parmigiano’s root for are playing at the same time. If you are lucky enough to get invited over to the Parmigiano’s there’s a pretty good chance you will spend some significant time in their “Casita.” know exactly what they are getting and lets he and Jason know what they are expected to deliver. They also spell out educated allowances that help towards avoiding unnecessary change orders. In combination with the finished construction documents, the Specifications give the Builder and the client the tools they need to begin the process of making dreams happen.

68 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014

The completed project is amazingly complemented by the courtyard, pool and landscaping designed and constructed by John Hackett of Dynamic Environments. As the construction process was coming to a close, Barbara worked closely with the Parmigiano’s in regards to rugs, art placement, furniture, window treatments and all of the details that make a house a client’s home. The Parmigiano’s

finished home is a phenomenal testament to the results that can be achieved with strong communication and Teamwork. The completion of the home does not signal an end to the relationship with Jim and Linda. It does however signal the beginning of them being neighbors to me and my wife Sherry who live just around the corner and enjoy seeing them often in the Ranch and up at the Club.
