Welcome TO

the Dominion Magazine Dear Reader,

Although we enjoyed some spring-like weather in February, spring doesn’t officially start until later this month. Spring represents renewal and new beginnings, and we will see that in many ways around our neighborhood soon. The HOA will start refreshing and renewing our landscaping, as will many of our homeowners. The Board of Directors will begin its new year in April with new Board members. The Dominion Country Club will be embarking on their own renewal process as the renovations of the clubhouse will begin. Spring is chock-full of exciting HOA and Club events. In preparation for the Board of Director’s “renewal”, the HOA has solicited applications for Board positions. During this month, all homeowners will receive notification of your neighbors who are offering to serve our community on the HOA Board. I encourage you to read through the resumes in order to be prepared to vote for who you would choose to lead us this next term. The election will take place at the HOA Annual Meeting, April 13th, which I encourage you all to attend. At that meeting, we will not only elect members to the Board, but you will have an opportunity to visit with your neighbors, hear about the state of the HOA, and ask any questions you might have. My thanks go out to all who have served, who are serving, and who are offering to serve our community. Wishing you all a very Happy Easter and a wonderful spring!

hoa annual meeting & board elections By rob mcdaniel, general manager of the dhoa

With National elections in full swing, The Dominion HOA is also conducting elections. Every year the HOA holds elections for the Board of Directors. The term of office for Directors is three years, which means that each year three of the nine seats are up for election. The current Directors whose terms are ending are Jeff Lewis, Glen Glass, and Sandy Souchon. This year’s election and Annual Members Meeting are scheduled for April 13th at The Dominion Country Club. The HOA relies greatly on volunteers serving on the Board and committees. Fortunately, the community is privileged to have many highly qualified and talented residents. Any owner or member in good standing may run for the Board and should submit their application before March 2nd. Ideally, candidates would have been involved with the community by serving on one of the HOA committees, although this is not required. Board Directors serve with the best interest of the community in mind. Soon after the new Directors are elected, the Board elects officers. The officers are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The Board meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month, typically for about four hours; Board Directors are also typically required to serve as liaisons to one of the HOA committees. Your HOA Board is committed to keeping all Dominion homeowners fully informed about the 2016 election of HOA Directors. We encourage you to participate, either as a candidate for one of the three open positions, or to vote for one of the three candidates that you feel will best represent your interest. If you have any questions about the process, please do not hesitate to ask. We hope to see all of you at the Annual Meeting at The Dominion Country Club at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

MARCH 2016

On February 17, the Development Committee met with TxDot to discuss updates on IH10 construction as well as representatives from Walmart Store 3107 to receive an update on the new store opening just down the highway. As you are all anxiously awaiting the completion of the construction outside of our gates, rest assured, there is progress being made and we see the light at the end of the tunnel. As you know, the access road just outside of Aue Rd. (near the north gate of Dominion) was recently changed to one-way traffic heading west bound only. This is a change that affects many residents who typically would exit the north gate and take a left on to the access road to enter the Leon Springs/Boerne Stage Rd. intersection. This re-direction of traffic will be in place for approximately six months, weather permitting. The traffic lights at Dominion Dr./IH10 and Boerne Stage Rd./IH10 are currently planned to begin flashing red lights on March 1st and will be fully operational traffic lights beginning March 8th. The addition of 8’ wide sidewalks is currently taking place from Dominion Dr. on both sides of IH10 running down almost to Boerne Stage Rd. The concrete for the sidewalks will be poured soon. There are many proposed changes in the works to improve traffic flow on IH10 to include the possibility of adding managed or HOV lanes in the center of IH10 from La Cantera/Camp Bullis to Ralph Fair Rd. Much of the modifications to the existing exit and entrance ramps need to be done in stages along with the change to direction of traffic on the access roads. The completion of the permanent exit and entrance ramps is scheduled for six months to a year, depending on weather. Representatives from Walmart also came to discuss the opening of their new store at 24403 IH10 W. The Store Manager, Bill Hirshberg, advised that construction is on track for the Grand Opening currently scheduled for April 20th. The new Walmart will be approximately 152k sq.ft. and will not include an auto repair department that is usually seen in their larger stores. The store will require roughly 275-300 employees with about 10-15% being veterans. The store will focus on offering more brand name products, more organic and gluten-free products, an expanded baby section, and interactive displays in the electronic department to make your shopping experience more enjoyable. Store 3107 will offer online shopping with in-store pickup of most items. They anticipate adding online purchase and curb-side delivery of groceries a few months after the store opens and gets established. The store will not be open 24-hours as is mainly seen with the SuperCenter Walmart stores, rather the hours will be from 6am to 12am every day. Mr. Hirshberg looks forward to meeting the residents of The Dominion and hopes that you make the new Walmart your go-to store for all your shopping needs.

leon springs

Business Association by michelle hans

Mission: “To promote a growing and supportive community in Leon Springs, Texas” The Leon Springs Business Association (LSBA) was established in 2006. According to Darcee Grivel, LSBA Community Liaison and Dominion resident, “We are built for more than just a business networking Association...we serve and give back to our community.” They do indeed! The Leon Springs Business Association collaborates with Dominion Rotary on service projects, provides scholarships through the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation, ‘stuffs the bus’ with school supplies at Broadway Bank, collects toys for the Children’s Methodist Hospital, and supports local elementary schools (Leon Springs ES, Aue ES, and Fair Oaks Ranch ES) through each campus’ Early Act Club. The Early Act Club promotes leadership and service projects organized by second through fifth grade students. Additionally, the LSBA also works with the Leon Springs Trail Foundation, Hill Country Daily Bread, Leon Springs VFD, and several other San Antonio area organizations. The Association also supports the historic preservation of the Leon Springs community. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Association meets on the third Thursday of each month from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. Each meeting rotates to various venues or restaurants within the Leon Springs community. Guest speakers at each meeting come from city leadership, local universities, TxDOT, surrounding school districts, etc. to keep the Leon Springs community informed about future growth, and what residents can expect to see in the area. Board members include Kam Smeby, owner of Allstate Insurance and An Empty Vase Florist, and LSBA Co-Chair; Ms. Smeby schedules guest speakers, and is the Director of Music and Food for Leon Springs Night. Brenda Bass, VP Market Manager of Broadway Bank in Leon Springs, and LSBA Treasurer; Ms. Bass is the Director of Membership. Shannon Workman, Administrative Assistant for the Leon Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and LSBA Co-Chair. Larry Price, CEO and owner of Price Protective Service, and LSBA Co-Chair; Mr. Price is the Director of Security and Parking, and assists with social events and special projects. Darcee Grivel, VP and General Manager of Vintage Reconstruction, Inc., and LSBA Community Chair; Ms. Grivel directs the kids’ area activities at Leon Springs Night. Mike Taylor, President of Connect Communication, and LSBA Co-Chair; Mr. Taylor is the Director of the Association’s website. Darcee adds, “We encourage the business owners around us to join because of our belief in giving back and investing in the community, networking with our very professional and loyal members, and to be a part of a historical, growing community.” For more information on the Leon Springs Business Association, please visit www.leonspringstx.com.

mark your calendar! The Association’s only, yet highly successful, fundraising event is coming up in April. The sixth annual Leon Springs Night, a Fiesta celebration, donates its proceeds to the projects mentioned earlier. This community-wide event will be held on April 15th, from 5:30 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. The kids’ area is open from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and will feature mechanical bulls, dunking booths, a rock wall, games, face painting, and more. The kids’ area may close at eight o’clock, but the rest of the party keeps going strong, with live music from local artists, food from local restaurants and food trucks, and shopping at vendor booths. Historically, the Leon Springs Night has always taken place at the Leon Springs Dance Hall. Due to the current construction and traffic woes, it will be held a very short distance up the interstate at the Javelina-Harley Davidson dealership, located along the westbound IH-10 frontage road. Visitors to the Leon Springs Night can expect free onsite parking, and no traffic. “We usually have anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 people come through the “doors” states Darcee. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, vendor, or just want to learn more about this vital community fundraiser, you can visit www.leonspringsnight.com.

RESIDENT PROFILE Shaan Schaeffer

A

ah, The Dominion…an oasis of peace and serenity within the bustling city of San Antonio. How fortunate we residents are to have found it! My journey from the suburbs of Philadelphia to The Dominion began in July 2014 with a phone call from a colleague concerning an opportunity within a small prerevenue company, Seno Medical Instruments, Inc. located here in San Antonio. He knew my interest was to work on the cutting edge of medical technology and thought my skill sets would match the position as Vice President of Clinical Operations. Seno is developing a new imaging technology which is intended to assist in diagnosing breast lesions using optoacoustics. Seno’s patented Imagio® device integrates the use of lasers and ultrasonics to determine the presence of

30

MARCH 2016

angiogenesis – the growth of new blood vessels – and the resulting higher volume of blood in and around a cancerous lesion. The use of Imagio® could enable breast radiologists to better distinguish between a benign and a cancerous mass, thereby reducing the need for many needle biopsies. You can just imagine how happy and relieved women worldwide will be with the use of this new technology! My position as Vice President of Clinical Operations is to conduct the studies which produce the data necessary for submission to the FDA in order to obtain approval for use of the Imagio® device. My career in the medical device and pharmaceutical industry began 20 years ago at Arrow International, a small company in Reading, PA. I was the catalyst for initiating the company’s Clinical Research Department responsible for introducing and conducting mandatory clinical studies necessary for FDA product approvals. Subsequently, I have contracted and consulted with many well-known pharmaceutical and medical device companies, such as Boston Scientific Inc., Johnson and Johnson, Shire HGT, BTG International, etc., concerning breakthrough technologies that range from neurovascular coils developed to treat intracranial aneurysms, to a drug that addresses Fabry disease, a rare genetic disorder. The trials I have worked on involved complicated protocols, clinical sites across the globe, as well as regulatory and compliance challenges to insure the validity of the data. My past experiences have provided the background necessary for excelling at my current position, which currently involves heading two trials; one in the U.S. and the other in the Netherlands. After deciding to join the company, my boyfriend Sam Cortella, and I attacked the first obstacle – finding a home. Several visits to San Antonio, contact with a real estate agent, and extensive internet searching introduced us to The Dominion. After visiting many communities, we found The Dominion to be a welcoming and wonderful place to settle. Our final decision was confirmed by talking with several residents who provided great feedback on life here in The Dominion. We eventually settled in the Andalucia neighborhood where we have wonderful neighbors. Sam, who is enjoying semi-retirement from a Vice President of Sales position at Xerox, now helps people start retirement savings programs and manages a financial portfolio. He also met some great guys to play squash with and finally has time to work on his new game of golf. Sam and I are proud to represent the Andalucia families on the Neighborhood Outreach Committee at the Homeowners Association meetings, and greeting new residents. The new resident parties and other social events at The Dominion Country Club have been instrumental in meeting other residents, many of whom have become good friends. We especially enjoyed the bonfire. A roaring fire, good music, chili dogs, and great friends made it a memorable evening. We hope to attend many more events as my busy schedule allows.

lot of events take place in March. First of all, we spring forward on March 13th. Everyone will lose an hour of sleep, but with the beautiful weather we have, you sure can take advantage of it. Secondly, March is National Nutrition Month. It is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices, as well as developing well-rounded eating and physical activity habits. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right”. The message is to encourage everyone to take time to enjoy food traditions, and appreciate the pleasures, great flavors, and social experiences food can add to our lives. For example, you can

32

enjoy our Chef’s Special every Thursday night, which is a great combination of flavor and pleasure for the palate. Lastly, our annual Easter celebration tradition continues at the end of the month with a visit from the Easter Bunny. If you didn’t join in on the fun last year at the kids’ Easter Egg Hunt, then make sure you do not miss it this year. It was a great event that had over 80 children in attendance. It’s a Club tradition you want to be a part of. Easter is also a holiday traditionally spent with family. A wonderful occasion for you and your loved ones to attend is the Easter Sunday Brunch. You can be assured that Chef Jay and his Culinary Team will prepare some wonderful dishes for the whole family to enjoy. Please come and treat yourselves on March 27th.

MARIA T. FREYRE

TITLE: Nail Technician, The Dominion Country Club Home town & Education Born in Mérida Yucatán, Maria majored in Education, with a minor in Educational Psychology. She taught elementary school before moving to the USA. “Since my degree from my home town was not valid in this country, a young mother doing my nails advised me to get into this business because I could make my own hours and still take care of my children. I was going to do this “nail job” for only a year or two. It has been a real pleasure to still have my own business, going on 19 years, at The Dominion. The most rewarding opportunity is to meet some of the best people in San Antonio, and seeing my fine clients coming back because this is not just a job. They know that I really put a lot of effort in to taking care of them. And after all these years I cannot be more thankful for them and the friendship that, to me, it is almost like a family. It is why I take a lot of time with them.” In Maria’s free time, she loves to dance, exercise, and to try new things with friends. Her most favorite is to spend as much time as possible with her children, as they don’t live here in San Antonio anymore and she misses them very much. 34

sweetfire kitchen By Lisa Arcuri, dominion resident

Dominion residents are arguably some of the luckiest people around. We reside in a beautiful “oasis” of a community. We are lucky enough to live in an area that is now surrounded by excellent restaurants, fabulous shopping, and great entertainment. And now we have a world class resort with majestic views. La Cantera Hill Country Resort is in the final stages of a $100 million dollar renovation, and it will blow you away! The majestic views are the same as they’ve always been, but the opportunities to showcase those views are now seized in the most incredible ways. By taking a short drive from our beautiful community, you are transported far away. It is truly a resort destination. Cascading water features, juxtaposed to magnificent fire pits, and glowing torches speckled throughout the property are the backdrop to stunning vistas of our precious hill country. The views and amazing design are enough to get you up there, trust me! But stay for dinner… SweetFire Kitchen is just one of the new dining concepts at La Cantera Resort. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and open. With 36

large luxurious booths, contemporary lighting, and local artwork, the look is light, airy and welcoming. This contemporary design also gives you a glimpse into the open kitchen, where chefs are taking locally sourced, seasonally fresh ingredients and making wonderful dishes for us to try. One excellent way to start your meal here is with the Beer Can Mussels. A sumptuous broth, chicken, and country ham along with Pearl beer creates the perfect vehicle to savor these gems, as well as a delicious dipping sauce for the amazing garlic toast served alongside. In addition, the Un-Traditional Deviled Eggs have both crab and mascarpone cheese, as well as Cajun spices topped with crumbled candied bacon. They are a treat. Pair these starters with one of SweetFire’s Hand Crafted Cocktails. The Velvet Revolver combines Sriracha, Hendrick’s Gin, Ty Ku Citrus Liqueur, cucumber, and lime. For main course selections, the Honey-Chipotle Rubbed Salmon is a delightful modern presentation and delectably paired with pork belly

of all things, and an unbelievable butternut squash puree. The locally sourced 8 oz. filet sits atop a creamy potato puree with sautéed mushrooms and a red wine demi-glaze. There are show-stopping side dishes as well, such as the White Cheddar & Parmesan Grits. Extra creamy and flavorful because they have both crème fraiche and Andouille sausage! They’re everything you expect and more!! All of these incredible main course selections paired beautifully with a 2009 Quimera Malbec from Achaval Ferrer Vineyards in Argentina. SweetFire has an extensive wine list to choose from, as well as “off menu” selections like this one was, recommended by our very knowledgeable waiter, Jaime Morales. SweetFire has thought of dessert as well. They’ve cleverly put everything you love in a dessert in these adorable little dessert jars. Small in scale, you won’t have to feel guilty trying more than one. The Texas tiramisu is amazing! They use Rebecca Creek Whiskey to ”liquor up” the lady fingers giving it a real Texas flare. Another crowd pleaser is the peanut butter pie jar. This one has a light and fluffy peanut butter, and chocolate mousse, sitting side by side in the jar for the perfect combination in one bite! Check out SweetFire! They change their menu seasonally, and will be bringing in the best of the area for us lucky Dominionites to try! Enjoy! Note: La Cantera has additional dining concepts such as Primero Cantina, a casual rustic eatery. They also have Sire Bar, offering signature, hand crafted cocktails, and Bocado featuring a gourmet charcuterie. In addition, Topaz and Vista Grille provide poolside dining options.

MARCH 2016

BY Ben Schooley

For Mo and Bibi Saidi, the adventure of life has taken them quite far. Both from overseas, their shared passions have provided them adventures that fill their souls, stamp their passports, and have allowed them to each pursue their passions. However, their travels always bring them home to The Dominion.

T h e D o m i n i o n -M a g a z i n e . c o m

Mo Saidi’s story begins in his home country of Iran, where his enthusiasm for reading and medicine became apparent early. Reading fiction and playing chess was part of my life, he says. Iran’s educational system is very similar to the US system, and my family encouraged all of us to pursue higher education. In those days, Iran had seven medical schools; Tehran Medical School was at the top and you had to apply plus pass an examination. In 1960, there were 60,000 applicants for a mere 300 positions. Mo was accepted, and began a combined program of Pre-Med and Medical School which took seven years to complete. Upon graduation from Medical School, Mo faced the decision of staying in Iran or like many of his classmates coming to America for postgraduate medical education. He easily passed the ECFMG, an examination required by the American Medical Association, came to the U.S. and landed at the New Jersey College of Medicine, where he completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He soon moved to San Antonio in 1973 and enrolled in the Gynecology-Oncology sub-specialty program, where he became a fellow at University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCSA), as well as at MD Anderson. Upon completion he taught as clinical faculty at UTHSCSA and opened his group practice, Northeast OB/GYN Associates, which he operated for the next 27 years. However, on Tuesday, January 6, 1981 in a restaurant, he would meet a young lady that would change his life. Mo explains, “A group of us were having a light post-holiday dinner and since a few of them were from out of town, I invited them to a chic restaurant called “Arthur’s” at the Boardwalk on Broadway. Afterwards we all settled in the piano bar area. Bibi was there with a group of her friends and happened to sit at the next table. My best friend’s mother began to talk to her in French and discovered that she was single, highly educated, and beautiful. She wasted no time to introduce us to each other.” At this point in the story, Bibi jumps in, “My business women friends and I would get together after work to socialize and we preferred places where women could relax in an elegant and peaceful environment. That jazz bar was such a place; softly lighted, comfortable, with pleasant piano music and a reputable jazz trio. There we business women were exchanging thoughts on life and work. However, Mo’s friend’s mom began to speak to me and soon had elicited the information that I had a job, a house, a car, and no boyfriend. Immediately she called Mo to come over and meet me. Initially, Mo declined, but after she insisted Mo moved next to me and we started to converse. He was not dating at the time and neither did I.” Bibi laughs and continues, “We quickly found that we had several mutual interests: season subscriptions to the symphony, the opera, and chamber music, plus reading literary fiction and playing tennis. Our first date was on the tennis court in Mo’s backyard.” Following a year-long courtship, the two were married on January 9, 1982. Bibi’s entrance into Mo’s life was one that had a wonderful professional history as well. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Bibi had studied at the University of Frankfurt, as well as in Vienna and Paris. On a visit to the United States to visit family friends who were violinists at the Philadelphia Orchestra, she was recruited for a job as a Physicist working on the Apollo Space Program. A few years later, and as she puts it, “When Nixon didn’t want to go to the moon anymore, I moved to RCA as an engineer. I was the first woman engineer they ever hired among 40

5000 other men engineers. After completing my master’s degree at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania I moved on and eventually worked for AT&T in New Jersey. One of my coworkers was from Texas and wanted to go back, and she joined a company down here and then she referred me and so I became the Corporate Director of Budgeting at Harte Hanks Communications.” With the journeys of their lives now entwined as husband and wife, the two set about to create the most enjoyable life that they could together. Both are civic minded and have spent time in leadership; Mo as Chief of Staff and board member at area hospitals and with opera and symphony borads; Bibi on state and county boards, with arts and professional organizations, and as HOA president, including at The Dominion HOA. Originally members of the Retama Country Club, the two were very involved in the social and tennis activities. 42

MARCH 2016

In 1986, however, the club folded and the duo were left looking for another home for their activities. Mo explains, “The Executive Director of the newly formed Dominion Country Club invited us one afternoon to come and play tennis with their members. He stopped by and he assured us that if we would bring a group of new members from Retama, we would get a special deal. At that time, they were really looking for new members. So we brought about 30 members with us and all enrolled in The Dominion Tennis program. And we have been members ever since, upgrading to golf membership a few years later. Several years later, the Saidis purchased a Dominion lot when The Pavilions opened up, and in 1998 moved into their new home, designed by Bibi. It’s a decision they have never regretted. “We love this quiet, secure, and also a very well kempt community,” Mo says. “People are friendly and courteous; most are either retired business-people

or active professionals. We have old and young families here, walkers, bikers, tennis players, and groups of golfers enjoying the mild sunny days all year round.” Bibi agrees, “As opposed to some other gated communities, here a lot of the people have worked hard to get where they are; yes, they studied hard in college, worked long hours, led successful businesses, and now live in this beautiful place in harmony. Yet, the community is a serious community and everyone has a stake in creating a high quality lifestyle. Having the Country Club at the heart of The Dominion really completes the structure of our community.” Enjoying life is something that the Saidis have become very adept at. Mo continues to work on his writing and poetry, something he now refers to as his vocation. He advanced his writing skills and English knowledge by attending Harvard University for many summers, where he finally obtained his Master’s degree in English and American Literature and Languages. That same year, he won the Iowa Poetry Association Award from the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. His first book of poetry, Art in the City, won the Edwin M. Eakin Memorial Book Publication Award of Poetry Society of Texas. In 2010, his second collection, The Color of Faith, was published. He has also published a third collection of poetry, Between A and Z by Wings Press. The literary journal, Voices de la Luna, serialized his novel The Marchers from 2008 to 2015. A collection of his short fiction. The Garden of Milk and Wine, was published in 2012. His latest offering, The Marchers: A Novel, was published 2015 and both print and the eBook versions have already received considerable accolades in the press. Bibi focuses a great deal of her passion on a new medium of expression: painting. She explains, “All my life, I’ve been a numbers person. Math, physics, and equations....but around 2007, a friend of mine commented ‘Bibi, you really have a painter’s eye.’ I said ‘No I don’t’, but she gave me some brushes and paint and watercolor paper. I went to the library and got a little how-to book and my life really changed. Every time I swirl a brush into paint, I feel my brain adjusting from left to right, and I love it. After a while I was encouraged to submit to national juried shows and now my paintings have shown in several states and around Texas. Last year I started with acrylics, but still I do mainly watercolors, and each day I improve a little. The Dominion provides so much inspiration for my art with the beauty that I can see all around us.” In addition to their art and writing, the Saidis are avid travelers. If last year was any indication, the coming years will be busy, too. Bibi explains, “In January of 2015 we were in Puerto Rico. Then in February we were skiing in Vermont. From there we went to Mexico. From there we went home, T h e D o m i n i o n -M a g a z i n e . c o m

but soon jetted back to the East Coast to see our grandkids in New Jersey and Philadelphia. In the summer we always rent a cottage at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York and tour art and nature sites on the way up. We spent a month there; enjoying diverse activities with literature, music, art, and philosophic programs throughout the summer. Then we went to India, and came home via New Orleans. We stayed home for a few weeks, then Hawaii, then back home, and drove to Palm Beach to spend Christmas with our family. We’ve been home ever since and intend to take a little lighter schedule this year. With their 3 children (James, Kaveh, and Suzanne), along with 3 grandchildren (Tristan, Sofia, Aria) primarily residing in the Northeast,

the Saidis’ schedule will certainly include them on their many travels, however, Texas is definitely home for them both. Mo claims San Antonio as his home, “I have lived most of my life here. When I came to interview at UTHSCSA in 1973, arriving from cold and snowy New Jersey, I found a city full of sunshine. Yes, it was sunny and warm, and lines of pansies and palm trees welcomed arrivals along Airport Boulevard. Even before I got to the University, I said, “This place is perfect. It reminded me of the river and palm trees of my hometown. I fell in love with the city at that time and decided to accept the offer and move to San Antonio. It’s a place to raise a family and enjoy the happy years of retirement.”

Spring Luncheon by WENDI STRONG. CTRC Council

On Monday, April 4TH, the Cancer Therapy & Research Center Council (CTRCC) will host its annual Spring Luncheon at the Omni San Antonio Hotel at the Colonnade. All proceeds from the luncheon go to support patients who are undergoing cancer treatment at the CTRC at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. The CTRCC Spring Luncheon is always a beautiful, fun, and inspiring affair, but this year promises to be very special. Dominion’s own Pam Burdick will be honored as a CTRCC Volunteer of the Year. Pam has been a tireless volunteer and leader, having served in many capacities including as a member of the Board of Trustees and President of the organization. She feels that her work with the CTRC has yielded great rewards, knowing that she has been an integral part of a group that makes people’s lives better. “My mother was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2007. When she died in 2008, I worked through my grief by pouring my energy into support for the CTRC and advocacy for the people who, like my mother, were struggling through the challenge of cancer treatment,” said Pam. This year’s distinguished speaker at the CTRCC luncheon is San Antonio native and highly decorated Olympic swimmer, Josh Davis. Josh has inspired thousands with his story of perseverance, faith, and integrity. He will share with luncheon guests how the CTRC was an invaluable source of hope and compassion to him and his family during his mother’s threeyear battle with cancer. Tickets for the luncheon may be purchased by calling 210450-5571 or on the CTRC website, ctrccouncil.org. Individual tickets are $75 and sponsorships are available for $1,000 to $10,000. Josh Davis achieved record times at all levels: high school, college, American, and World records, and now multiple Masters records. He won five Olympic Medals over two Olympic Games, 1996 and 2000, and has been a motivational speaker on the foundations of excellence for 18 years. The CTRC Council is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization comprised of over 600 dedicated members, many of whom reside in The Dominion. The mission of the Council is to support the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio in the fight against cancer by providing financial and volunteer resources for cancer research, treatment, education, community outreach, and patient assistance. Many residents of The Dominion have been involved with the organization over time, including past-Presidents Nancy Kelley and Lisa Cohick, and current CTRC Council President Liz Conklyn.

dominion tennis By Barry Mills, Dominion Tennis Director

Let me tell you what The Dominion Tennis program has in store. All of our Adult and Junior programs are in full swing. Our ladies teams are competing against all the other clubs in town on various days of the week, and our juniors continue to practice during the week for their weekend tournaments. Please come out and see the kids play. They work so hard and enjoy this great game so much. We just completed a fantastic Parent/Child Tournament event, as seen in the pictures. For all the years I have been at The Dominion, this is easily my favorite. Just look at the smiles and happy faces! Mums and sons, mums and daughters, dads and daughters, dads and sons at all levels competed in the Cantuarama, the obstacle course, and the rally tournament to finish with pizza and the piñata. Just perfect! Our March events include a spring break junior tournament and spring break camp. You are invited to come and watch the high school tournament. The teams competing attend our local high schools, and the level of competition is very good. (I’m sure you have noticed all the school buses parked in our parking lot.) I encourage you to stop by and have a look. The competition begins on March 10th – 12th. Also, your school-aged children are invited

to attend camp every day during the spring break holiday, March 14th through 18th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. I cannot quite believe it. Summer camp and swim team are just around the corner! As homeowners, you are invited to participate, as many of you have in the past. I strongly encourage you to sign up your children early. (Our members do take priority.) Camp begins June 7th and runs through August 12th. We have camp for every age from 3 ½ years to 18 years. All your favorites are back. Tennis, golf, soccer, basketball, swimming, the climbing wall, Reptile Man, and fencing are just a few of the many fun activities in which the children participate. Swim team, camp brochures, and enrollment forms will be available at the Club or you can visit our website, www.the-dominion.com, and download everything you need from there. Please call 698-2288, and speak with anyone at the Tennis Shop if you need any more details. Please come by the shop and find out more. All of the staff will be happy to talk to you about any of the events detailed above. Be sure to look for all the amazing renovations going on in the Club. It will be beautiful!

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES? I am currently in the beginning of creating a Formula SAE® organization at Trinity. Formula SAE® is a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). Each team designs, builds and tests a small Formula-style race car based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving. Formula SAE® promotes careers and excellence in engineering as it encompasses all aspects of the automotive industry including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management, and finances. Formula SAE® takes students out of the classroom and allows them to apply textbook theories to real work experiences.

what are your career goals after you graduate? After graduation I would like to work for a company where I can put my engineering skills to good use. I am specifically interested in the area where electrical engineering (hardware and software) meets mechanical engineering. I really enjoy the engineering design process and I can’t wait to develop a product from beginning to end.

Do you have any mentors or people who have deeply influenced who you are? If so, tell us how. My parents have had the biggest influence on the person I am today. They have set a great example for how I should live my life and where my priorities should be. They have supported me through all of my endeavors, and put me on the right path when I have deviated. Also, my older brother is a great role model so I can always look to him to be a great example for me. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I avidly enjoy snow skiing as much as possible. I enjoy dirt biking, mountain biking, white water kayaking, hiking, and climbing in the beautiful outdoors! I am also a car fanatic, and enjoy anything and everything that revolves around them. What do you enjoy about The Dominion community? I grew up here and met some of my best friends down the street. We still hang out together whenever we are home, and I know we will do so for many years to come no matter where we are. The Dominion is a safe, beautiful community that I can call home.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities (clubs/ organizations/sports)? Tell us about them. I played on Trinity’s men’s varsity tennis team my freshman and sophomore years. Since then I have played on intramural teams (softball, sand volleyball, and soccer). Last year I was an Admissions intern where I pitched the value of Trinity to prospective students and their families. I also joined a national fraternity, and I am currently the Vice President of Trinity’s IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) student chapter. Do you have any mentors or people who have deeply influenced who you are? If so, tell us how. My family has been a big influence on my life. Not only have they supported me, but they also push me to do better. My dad has influenced me by showing me what a devoted work ethic looks like. My mom has influenced me by being my person I can sit down and talk to for hours. My younger brother has influenced me by showing me the strength of family bonds, and how we will always be there for each other. What do you enjoy about The Dominion community? The Dominion community is home for me. It is where I spent most of my childhood, and is a safe place that will always be there for me.

jeff lewis Occupation: I have been retired since July 2004. Prior to that, I was in the insurance business as a senior executive at Aetna, Prudential, USAA, and Allstate. Currently, I consider my occupation as “golfer”! Duties on the Board: I was elected to The Dominion HOA Board of Directors in April 2013. I served one year as Secretary, then elected by the Board to be Chairman the following year in 2014, and reelected as Chairman in 2015. I am also a member of the Development Committee, serving as the Board liaison. Most enjoyable part of being a Board Member: I very much enjoy interacting with the HOA staff, Board members, and Committee members to serve the interests of our residents. We are lucky to have a very talented staff and committed volunteers, all of whom help make my job easier and even fun. Most challenging part of being a Board Member: I find the most challenging part of my role is satisfying and balancing the varied needs and wants of a very diverse community while keeping the HOA dues at a reasonable rate and maintaining fiscal responsibility. How long have you lived in The Dominion? I have been a resident of The Dominion since July 1995. Although I did not live here continually, I maintained my home here as I knew it was where I wanted to live. I have lived here full time since my retirement. Although my housing needs have changed over the years, I never wanted to leave The Dominion, and am now living in my sixth Dominion home.

What are your favorite parts of The Dominion? There are so many things I enjoy about living in The Dominion - it would take too much space to list them all! First would be the people who live here; I have made so many acquaintances and friends over these past 20 years, all of whom I value. Over the last few years the new feeling of community, fostered by the activities planned by the Neighborhood Outreach Committee, have made making new friends even easier. I also value living in a safe and secure environment, which The Dominion provides. The community is so beautiful, which I find adds greatly to our quality of life. I will never forget driving across the bridge into The Dominion for the first time and recognizing that this is where I wanted to be. I also very much enjoy the proximity to our wonderful country club. To have such an outstanding golf course, where I can easily get to in my cart each day, makes life wonderful! I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

skin care: on sunscreen Over the last 12 years as a PA in dermatology, I have often been asked questions about sunscreens, frequency of skin exams, the correlation between diet and acne, the difference between melanoma and other types of skin cancer, the difference between Botox and filler and what to really look for in a skin care regimen. If our patients have these questions with such frequency, I presume you may too. It is my hope that you may find just the piece of information you are looking for to help better answer these questions for you too.

Yes, the ultraviolet index in the southern United States remains at moderate to extreme intensity even in the winter. Although it is less hot, the UVA and UVB rays cause the same amount of damage to our skin, eyes and immune system as they do in the summer months.

Niacinamide containing sunscreens can help minimize inflammation and are great for acne prone patients. If you need moisturizer or anti-aging coverage- Look for Moisturizers that contain sunscreen and antioxidants. This approach allows one to “kill two birds with one stone” and makes for a more streamlined daily routine. Creams, Lotions, Spray, or Gels? Which one? As a general rule, creams tend to be the thickest and require rubbing in, lotions a little thinner and less “occlusive” so if you don’t like the feel of heavy creams go with a thinner lotion or water based gel formulation. Sprays are nice because they are convenient and don’t require rubbing in usually, but it’s important you adequately cover all areas. Again, THE MOST PROTECTIVE SUNSCREEN IS THE ONE YOU USE EVERYDAY. Pick the “vehicle” that appeals most to you and make it a daily habit to use it.

2. What should I look for when choosing a sunscreen?

3. Is sunscreen in my makeup enough?

Look at the sunscreen label to be sure it meets the following requirements. For optimal coverage it should be… * Broad Spectrum-this means it contains ingredients that protect you against the “aging” UVA rays that penetrate glass and cause “brown spots” as well as skin cancer and the sunburn causing UVB rays. Ingredients that tend to cover the widest spectrum of UVA and UVB rays are Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and Avobenzone. Look for at least one of these in the top 5 listed ingredients on the back label of your sunscreen. * A minimum SPF of 30 or higher-An SPF of 30 blocks 97% of UV rays. While it is true, that an SPF of 50 may be slightly more protective, no sunscreen can block 100% of the UV rays, and the higher numbered SPF’s are no more protective than a 50. Remember, that higher SPF sunscreens don’t protect for longer, all sunscreen must be re-applied every two hours to maintain protection. * If planning to participate in water related activities or if you sweat excessively, it is important your sunscreen also be water resistant in addition to the above requirements. One side note about sunscreen, THE MOST PROTECTIVE SUNSCREEN IS THE ONE YOU USE EVERYDAY. Although, the above details are important, so are the ingredients and vehicle. If a sunscreen irritates your skin, feels too greasy, looks too white, or has a smell you dislike, you won’t be inclined to use it. Finding the “right one for you” can take some trial and error. For Acne Prone skin- Look for sunscreens that say Oil Free and Non Comedogenic on the label.

It depends, but in most cases, No. Here’s why....The sun proof factors in makeup tend to be lower, typically in the SPF 15 range, although an SPF 15 meets the minimum AAD requirements it is not as protective as a 30, this becomes especially important with patients who have Lupus, Rosacea, or pigment disorders like Melasma. I often recommend a zinc oxide containing, higher SPF sunscreen in addition to makeup for these individuals. The second issue with relying on makeup as your sunscreen, is that most women do not apply makeup to their neck, decolletage or hands, In this case, there is no photo protection for the areas that women complain look “aged” and photo damaged most. Third, we don’t often re-apply our makeup, so the protection we start with diminishes over the course of the day and we are not as protected as we think. Setting mist with sunscreen like Super Goop’s SPF 50 Rosemary Mint or Zinc/Titanium Dioxide containing dusting powders are among my favorite recommendations for this particular issue.

1. Do I need to wear sunscreen all year round?

4. Are Basal cell and Squamous cell skin cancers the same as Melanoma? NO. There are essentially three kinds of skin cancer. Basal cell skin cancer is the most common type, arising from the basal cell layer of the skin and directly related to sun exposure. Fortunately, it is not a hereditary form of cancer (with very rare exception) and your risk for developing Basal cell skin cancer doesn’t increase just because a relative has had one. Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer, also related to sun exposure and arises from the squamous cell layer of the skin. It can also be associated

ADVERTISEMENT with immune suppression but most commonly these develop from too much sun. A family member who has had squamous cell does not increase your risk for developing one. Melanoma on the other hand is a much different story. Although Melanomas are the least common form of skin cancer they are much more serious, can be associated with risks for other forms of cancer and are hereditary. Melanoma arises from abnormal melanocytes typically within moles. While it is true that Melanomas are also related to sun, If you have a primary relative, such as a father, mother, brother, sister or child with a history of Melanoma, your risk for developing melanoma is 10 times greater than those who do not have a family history. This is a very important distinction to be aware of when you have your skin examined. Our patients often assume that if they or a family member have had a skin cancer it was a melanoma. Knowing the differences between these types of cancers and their hereditary potential will not only help better educate you but your healthcare provider as well.

5. Is there a correlation between diet and acne? As a general rule, NO. There has long been debate about this very subject in the world of dermatology. For the most part, we do not believe there is a direct correlation, with two possible exceptions, Sugar and excessive amounts of animal milk. The theory is that the inflammatory substance we call sugar exacerbates the already inflammatory condition, acne. To my knowledge there are no well published studies that prove this theory, however there is some anecdotal evidence to prove it. Sugar alone not causing acne, but putting “gas on the fire”, so to speak. With animal milk, the link is more related to excess hormone ingestion, aggravating an already hormonal mediated acne picture and worsening the condition. Again, not the cause but perhaps putting “gas on the fire”. In my career, I have seen hundreds of acne patients on varying diets and can’t put my finger on any one dietary trigger alone. When I’ve seen dairy or animal milk play a role it has been associated with an excessive amount, so it is a bit of trial and error to identify which of the known triggers are specific risks for you.

6. What do I really need in a skincare regimen? A perfect regimen would involve the use of a daily sunscreen, and offer anti-aging benefit. A good sunscreen (meeting the criteria I discussed earlier) is the place to start for every person regardless of age or past history of photo exposure. Sunscreens that contain antioxidants are an excellent way to amplify the anti-aging benefit and photo protect as well. As for anti-aging benefits, you want to find ingredients that can treat diminished skin cell turnover and loss of elasticity. Products like Retin-A, Retinol, or chemical peels can speed cell turnover while stimulating collagen and elastin. They make the skin look “tighter, brighter and smoother” as a result. I consider these a “must have” because they very efficiently address several anti-aging needs. They can be a little irritating so it’s important to pick the proper formulation and strength, even with that, they take some getting used to and are not ideal for patients with rosacea or hyper sensitive skin. Growth factors also play an important role in brightening and rejuvenating skin, I like to use these to augment retinoid therapy with more advanced laxity or patients who do not tolerate retinoids.

7. What’s the difference between Botox and filler? How do I know what I need? In addition to diminished cell turnover and loss of elasticity, we lose volume as we age. No matter

how amazing your skincare regimen, there is no solution for volume loss with any skincare regimen. This is where the use of fillers like Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, Belotero, Radiesse, Restylane, Perlane, Sculptra and subcutaneous fat injections come into play. Flattening in the mid face area, hollowed temples, and more pronounced skin folds around your nose and mouth are indicators of volume loss. Volume loss is best treated using the above list of fillers or subcutaneous fat. As for deciding which one, it primarily depends on the areas we plan to inject. Botox differs from filler in that it does not augment volume at all. It is designed to relax muscle and minimize the “creases” in the skin made by the movement of the underlying muscles. If you have multiple horizontal lines on your forehead, around your eyes, mouth or a deep crease between your eyebrows you may be a candidate for Botox treatments. These lines will remain present as long as the underlying muscles continue to move and fold the overlying skin. Botox works by relaxing these muscles for an average of 3 months and giving the overlying skin a chance to rejuvenate without the impression of “movement” lines. Augmenting this with skincare products designed to speed cell turnover can greatly enhance the appearance of your skin.

8. Are annual skin exams necessary? It depends. If you have skin that burns easily, light eyes or light hair, a history of excessive sun exposure including multiple sunburns before age 20, a history of tanning bed use, immune suppressive disorders or treatments or a history of skin cancer you should, at minimum have a baseline exam and preferably an annual checkup thereafter. At the completion of your baseline skin exam, your healthcare provider will suggest the frequency of follow up visits based on their exam findings. If you have many moles (50 or greater), multiple large moles, a history of atypical moles or a primary family member (mother, father, brother, sister or child) with a history of melanoma you are at increased risk for developing melanoma and should also have a baseline full body skin exam with annual exams thereafter. The incidence of all types of skin cancer increases over age 50 in both men and women. Even if you do not have any of the above risk factors I would recommend a full body skin exam at or around age 50 and every few years thereafter as determined by your healthcare provider. That said, melanoma is the most common form of cancer in young adults age 25-29, and melanoma rates are higher in women less than age 50 compared to their male counterparts. So regardless of age, if you should notice a newly appearing mole, or existing mole changing in color, size or shape it is best to have it evaluated. The best things really do come in small packages! This is true for Brook, a 6-pound, 2-year-old ball of fluff who is eager for an adoptive home with lots of laps because she is a true princess lap dog. She is playful, loves to fetch, and enjoys the drive-through and doggie snacks, especially Greenies. Brook loves people and is fine with cats, but afraid of dogs. She would prefer to be an only dog. She is house trained, and sleeps in her own bed next to her people’s bed through the night. Brook is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and micro-chipped.
