The problem with big chain banks is knowing who’s pulling their chain. Bank mergers just keep going. One bank wants the other’s assets, or two weak banks join together. “Bigger is better” can be dangerous thinking. And it’s almost always bad for community banking. The big bank chains have to keep their out-of-town shareholders and regulators happy. But community banks have built Texas. And it’s the community banks that have long term commitments to towns like Kerrville. Big chains have trouble focusing on small communities because of the glitter of the skylines in places like New York, Detroit and Dallas. Community bank employees are the hospital volunteers, little league coaches, and sing in the church choir. And if the bank makes a profit, the chain bank will take the money back to New York, Detroit or Dallas. Guadalupe National Bank is locally owned and managed. The Bank and our employees are organically connected to the Hill Country. And we’re engaged in the lives and businesses of the Hill Country because it is our only home. And we believe there is a secret to keep from selling out—working harder for Kerrville people.

What hobbies do you have? My hobbies prior to 2004 included traveling and watching old movies my wonderful wife, Susan, but those have taken a backseat to hanging out with my two beautiful daughters, Reagan and Hanna Catherine. Reagan loves to fish and canoe and Hanna Catherine loves swimming, so these have become our new most important hobbies. What is the most influential book you have read? The book of Job is the most influential book that I have read—it is incredible the trials and tribulations that Job went through, but stayed strong. On a more secular note, I have just finished Donald Rumsfeld’s book, Known and Unknown, A Memoir. This was a great read. How have your mentors affected you? I have two primary mentors in my life- the first is my mother who was a devout Christian until her early death at age 53. She always preached integrity and character, my other mentor was Heath McGehee- he and his family helped me to be the first person in my family to ever attend college.

What do you like most about your job? The thing that I like most about my job is being able to make a difference in a community. Not all people like or want growth, but if it is done in a manner that utilizes smart growth aspects and promotes reuse, I think growth can be positive. The other interesting area of my position that is so rewarding is meeting and learning from so many different people.

What do you like most about working with the Kerrville business community? The strong character of the business community.

Ray has been married for 11 years to his wife, Dr. Susan Watson. They have a six-year-old daughter, Reagan and a four-year-old daughter, Hanna Catherine.

BUSINESS Q&A

What was your first job out of college? I worked as the Executive Director of the Texas Grain Sorghum Check-off Board and Association.

WHAT ARE YOUR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES? My job responsibilities as Executive Director of Kerr Economic Development Corporation are to foster relationships that will promote and expand the business opportunities in Kerrville and Kerr County. This organization is made up of a (9) member board.. The makeup of this board came out of a lot of discussion to have an assertive effort to work together and plan for new development as well as business retention with diverse community input. The major areas for our organization center around things that were identified in the strategic plan which created our organization- those being: 1). A new retail power center; 2). Refurbishing of the major retail corridors- Sidney Baker and Hwy 27; 3). Conference Center Hotel; 4). Aviation oriented opportunities; 5). Attainable Housing; 6). Warehousing opportunities; 7). Assisting Pat Murray and Peterson Regional Medical Center in their efforts; and 9). Quality of Life issues. Beyond the issues listed above, our board is also tasked with Business Retention of our existing businesses. This requires business visits to our businesses, which we have been working on since day one.

herman, Texas, a town of approximately 38,000,

sixty-miles north of Dallas, was sad to see her go— for Traci Carlson touched many lives in her tenure as President of the Chamber of Commerce. However, as all changes in life are bittersweet, their loss is the Hill Country’s gain. Of the Kerrville area Traci says, “It’s fantastic. I love the abundance of business opportunities. It’s a very giving community.”

EARLY YEARS Born and raised in Carrollton, Texas, Traci loved sports and the outdoors. She majored in Criminal Justice at the University of North Texas, with dual minors in Business Administration and English. While still in college she worked as an assistant probation officer for Denton County. Then an opportunity opened up at Thomson Reuters, where she expanded her repertoire of skills to include designing software programs, formulas for tax programs, and technical writing.

CALIFORNIA Traci spent several years in California. In Ridgecrest she developed recreational programs for members of the Defense Department stationed in that Mojave Desert community. She was Program Coordinator of the AmeriCorps Program at Cerro Coso College. And, in Goleta, home to the University of California at Santa Barbara, she coordinated military contracts for a defense company.

ROCKWALL But as so many Texans discover when they spend time away from their home state, she pined to return. Back in Rockwall, she saw an ad in the newspaper for an events coordinator at the Chamber of Commerce. Even though she was eight months pregnant she got the job. When she returned from maternity leave, she tackled the coordination of major events. “I loved every minute of it,” she says. Probably the most interesting fundraiser she coordinated was a Vegas Nights, held in a castle. “It was so much fun,” she remembers. 26

commu There’s a saying: “When you’ve seen one Chamber of Commerce, you’ve seen one Chamber of Commerce.” Each

is so different.

Traci says, “There’s a saying, ‘When you’ve seen one Chamber of Commerce, you’ve seen one Chamber of Commerce.’ Each community is so different.” She found this true when she left Rockwall to take the position of President of the Sherman Chamber of Commerce, about sixty miles north of Rockwall. There, she says, she had “a great relationship with Economic Development.” But what was most dear to her heart was her involvement with CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, a nonprofit network that supports and promotes courtappointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children. She helped re-establish the Sherman Chamber Foundation, which had been dormant for many years. This led to the creation of Kids Closet, a store that provides underprivileged children with free, new clothing. In a collaborative effort, a local Girl Scout has volunteered to paint the store. Traci was also president of the Kiwanis and on the board of Rotary.

FAMILY LIFE Traci’s husband, Jamie Carlson, has always been supportive of his wife’s career. He was a self-employed rancher and wheat farmer in North Texas and has put his own ambitions on hold to help get the family three kids, a Red Bone Coon Hound and a Chi Tzu - settled in. “Sue Tiemann found

unity

us a great house to lease,” says Traci. Nine-year-old Izabelle loves to write stories. Seven-year old Rhone’s favorite sport is baseball. He’s a huge Rangers fan. But there is no bigger sports fanatic than Kellan. This years’ NBA playoffs happened to coincide with her third birthday. “Dirk wasn’t doing so well,” Traci remembers. “Kellan was wearing her Nowitzki jersey and when she put on her Jason Terry headband, suddenly Dirk’s threepoint shots started to go in. My husband said to her, ‘Do not take off that headband!’” And so the Mavs prevailed and won the NBA Championship. Traci is close to her mother and hopes that when she retires soon from thirty-seven years with Thomson Reuters, she’ll consider moving to the Hill Country. “She has made me everything I am today.” Likewise, her mother-in-law was sad to see the family go, “But she has a sister in Harper and two in Brady and will be visiting more frequently. My sister-in-law, who has kids the same ages as ours, was so sad to see us go, but plans to visit often.” With such a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities in our area, they look forward to many family reunions.

KERRVILLE’S APPEAL Traci finds that one of the appeals of Kerrville is that, “It’s diverse enough in the business community that when one industry suffers another area picks up the slack and 28

AUGUST 2011

the effects are mitigated.” She also notes, “There’s a good mix of the age spectrum. And it’s nice to see people discussing things in their meetings, not just attending. People here have a vested interest in the community and a sense of cooperation.” In January, Traci will obtain certification from the Institute of Operational Management, a four-year program through the United States Chamber of Commerce. Every year she attends classes in Tucson with Chamber executives from throughout the country. This is where she met Brian Bondy, the outgoing Kerrville Area Chamber President. “I like going every year and reconnecting with people I’ve met over the years.” The certification will be added to various others such as Event Planning Certification and Oklahoma University Center for Chamber Excellence. When Traci was thirty-years-old, she had a session with a business coach who said it was important to write down goals, so you can check them off as they’re accomplished. Traci wrote that she wanted to be President of a Chamber of Commerce by the time she was thirty-four, figuring it would take four years. Instead, it happened in only two. We look forward to Traci’s contribution to the Chamber and the entire Hill Country community. As she says, “We’re all here for the quality of life. And it’s all right here.”

Can six adults and twelve young people, ages 14-18, sit and discuss issues involving bullying and violence in Kerr County, and through consensus agree on an idea to reduce these problems in the county? Yes, they can, and yes they have. Discussion centered around an issue that came to light at Aim For the C.O.R.E. (Competencies, Opportunities, Relationships and Experiences) on the Big Wall, which posed the question: “what is the biggest issue facing youth in Kerr County, that we must work together to solve?” From this input, it is clear that the greatest concern is violence, quick judgment of others, and essentially a lack of empathy toward others. Through brainstorming, discussion, and consensus, the group decided to hold a Youth Summit, around the theme of “A Walk in Another Person’s Shoes.” On October 15, 2011, they plan to gather 400 young people from Kerr County for this purpose so that our community promotes thriving behaviors leading to success, rather than risk taking behaviors that lead to violence and unkind actions toward others.

in their shoes Which of the 40 Developmental Assets are they building? 10. Safety—Young person feels safe at home, school, and in the neighborhood. 33. Interpersonal Competence—Young person has empathy, sensitivity, and friendship skills. 35. Resistance skills—Young person can resist negative peer pressure and dangerous situations. 36. Peaceful conflict resolution—Young person seeks to resolve conflict nonviolently. These assets are part of the 40 Developmental Assets that have been identified by Search Institute as the building blocks of positive youth development. Our community can build them in the young people who live here, by doing ordinary things everyday.
