Well here we are at close to 3 A.B… about 3 months after Brian Bondy departed for his new position as President of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce. To be quite honest, I had some anxieties about holding things together at the Chamber until the process of searching for Brian’s replacement ran its course. My worries were for naught as the Chamber staff, the Executive Committee, and the Board stepped up to the challenge. The four ladies that make up the Chamber staff; Dora Gonzalez, Kristan Craddock, Susan Rogers, and Barbara Allerkamp, have been exceptional in handling their respective areas of responsibility. I cannot stress enough how much I have depended on them. Dora has spent a lot of time installing an upgrade to our primary operating system and adding a new accounting software package. One of our Board members, Bill Beltrone, CPA, spent many ‘volunteer’ hours in guiding and assisting Dora in this process…a special thank you to Bill. Kristan oversees our events during the Chamber year and is always juggling at least a couple at any one time. The 16th Annual Sandbagger’s Golf Tournament was moved later into the spring, April 4th, to hopefully move it into warmer weather. Kristan and Trevor Hyde, also a Board member, worked to let us pick up Mercedez-Benz of Boerne as a major sponsor for this event. We look forward to them becoming more involved with the Chamber over time. Susan Rogers coordinates the very successful monthly mixer and luncheon programs which attract around two hundred members each month. She put together the 2011 Job Shadowing event which had a record student attendance of nearly two hundred. The challenge of matching students with businesses was hard enough, but she was also charged with the coordination of getting them to and from the businesses…great job Susan! The newest addition to the Chamber staff, Barbara, has fast become the ‘master’ greeter and is charged with answering all the questions from visitors and giving them proper guidance to our community. Barbara has also taken the initiative to provide visitors with referrals to our business members and is working to track and report them to our members. A special thank you to our current Executive Committee that is also doing double duty as the Search Committee for the Chamber’s new President/CEO. They started their charge by retaining the same search firm that brought us Brian Bondy over seven years ago…… and we are hoping for the same results. We have received a good number of

qualified applications, reviewed them and developed our group of semi-finalists, which we interviewed in late March and narrowed the group down to our finalists. We will bring the finalists and their spouses into Kerrville for two days in early April for an introduction to Kerrville, a reception, dinner and final interviews. Our goal is to make an offer on April the 8th and work towards having a new President/CEO on the job in early May. I had the privilege in February to make a trip to Washington, D.C. with a group of community leaders to meet with our Congressional representatives. Guy Overby, Precinct 2 County Commissioner and former Executive Director of the Kerr Economic Development Foundation, started these annual trips over six years ago. The groundwork he laid over this time was evident with each office we entered. It is important that our representatives know where Kerrville is, what our issues are, and have a relationship with our local elected officials and community leaders. This is a challenging time for our economy and our federal and local budgets. We promoted the construction funding appropriation for a new USDA Laboratory, retention and expansion of the Kerrville V.A. Hospital, and talked about possible federal transportation funding for an overpass on I-10 to help open up commercial property on the south side of the interstate. There are a lot of things going on in our community and I’m so thankful for the commitment of the Chamber staff, the men and women on the Chamber Board, and our local leaders

Hill Country Charity Ball Association Hill Country Charity Ball Association Invites You to the Silver Anniversary Ball Benefiting the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Library Foundation. The Library Playground project promises to bring more children and adults to reading and learning. As springtime rolls through the Hill Country, members of the Hill Country Charity Ball Association are making final preparations for another sensational evening. From the elegant beef wellington dinner to the rousing entertainment, from enticing auction items to the elaborate decorations, the ladies have worked diligently to make their 25th anniversary ball an event to remember. This year the HCCBA, Inc. has chosen the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Library Foundation (MEHLF) as beneficiary for 2011 funds. MEHLF will utilize the funds raised to build a handicap accessible, state of the art playground to be placed on the grounds of the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library Campus. “We are so excited to be working with the foundation to raise money for a project dedicated to learning and the children in our local community,” said Lindsay Conklin, HCCBA President. “In honor of Mary Helen Schreiner and the organization she created to memorialize her late son, Charles Schreiner V, HCCBA wants to thank ALL the women who have raised $1,163,950 over the past 25 years. Please come and help us celebrate!” The mission of the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Library Foundation is to promote the enhancement and development of libraries and library initiatives in Kerr County, with special attention given to the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library. Their vision is to increase the availability of state of the art information systems and outstanding library collections to all citizens of Kerr County. Their first task is to renovate the ButtHoldsworth Memorial Library and the surrounding campus to create an expanded facility of learning and connectivity for all people of Kerr County. The Hill Country Charity Ball Association, Inc. was founded in 1985 to honor the memory of Charles Bowmer Schreiner, V (January 17, 1980 - January 2, 1981) who died of a congenital heart disorder. Baby Charlie was the son of Mary Helen and Charles Schreiner, IV. Each year, members of the board of the HCCBA, Inc. dedicate the proceeds of the annual gala to non-profit organizations seeking to improve the lives of others. Many non-profit organizations in Kerr County have received financial support from the funds raised at this festive annual gala. Over the years many women have volunteered to serve

in the Hill Country Charity Ball Association. Some past presidents include familiar names and represent women of leadership throughout Kerr County such as Gaye Avery, Elizabeth Loggie, Betty Mosty, Ann Overby, Tricia Hamil, Beth Johnson, Robbie Crocker and Stacy Fritz; just to name a few. “The Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Library Foundation is pleased to be chosen as the Silver Anniversary beneficiary of the Hill Country Charity Ball Association, Inc.,” said Robin Amerine, Executive Director of the library foundation. “MEHLF is equally honored to partner with a dedicated group of women who share our desire to create lifelong readers and learners through a variety of venues, one of which will be the critically important library playground.” The 2011 gala celebrates the organization’s 25th anniversary and will be held on April 30th at the Floyd and Kathleen Cailloux Campus Activity Center Ballroom at Schreiner University. The theme for this year’s black-tie, formal event is The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland and promises to stir the imagination and delight the child in all of us. Tickets are $125 and are available to the public. John Hawkins

Vista Camps John & Freddie Hawkins: Kerr County Hall of Fame

I

Inductees 2011

STORY BY Mary Lee Gowland PHOTOGRAPHY BY Aaron Yates

n spring the 120 acres that comprise Camp Rio Vista and Camp Sierra Vista appear to be a peaceful paradise. Trees along the glimmering Guadalupe River rustle with new leaves. Green fields work their way up to rolling hills where cabins are nestled. Newly resurfaced tennis courts present a portrait of orderliness and calm. But soon this bucolic enclave will be transformed by the arrival of summer staff and hundreds of children. The air will be filled with shouts, laughter, and song. The grounds will teem with boys and girls and the energetic team who oversee every aspect of their lives for the time they live in the “Vista Bubble” as the camps are fondly referred to by campers and counselors. “Even though I’ve been doing this for years,” remarks co-director, John Hawkins, “on that first day of camp, when cars are lined up to the highway, I get butterflies in my stomach. I love it! I’m pumped! I would not want to be doing any other job.” mykerrville.org | 29

John and his brother Freddie are two of six sons of Carl and Diane Hawkins. Both were raised in the camp business and have done everything from washing dishes, wrangling and mowing acres of fields to recruiting campers and counselors, teaching activities and running the daily business. John’s son, Justin, is following in his father’s footsteps and serves as the business manager and handles off-season programs. Freddie who has attended and worked at several camps in his lifetime and his wife Chaille, a Hill Country camper for many years, have worked in all areas of the business. Between the four of them, they have over 120 years of camping experience. Camp is a legacy in the family. In 1977 when Rio Vista became available, Carl and Diane purchased it. Freddie was in college and John had a construction business in Conroe, Texas. But soon they were drawn back to the Hill Country and the camping way of life. “I’m blessed,” says John. “I’ve got the luckiest job in the world. In summertime it’s twenty-four hours a day. We make an incredible impact on children. In schools there are so many regulations, but camp is still camp.” “I recently was talking to an eighty-year-old man,” says Freddie. “He told me ‘I am who I am today because of my camping experiences.’ And it’s the same for me. Some of my best friends I made at camp.” John’s opinion is, “Camps are even more important now in our history. I hope every boy and girl can leave camp and feel good about themselves. We love to make them better people.” On the first day of camp all children see one of the two nurses on staff, take a swimming test, and those who want to participate in horseback riding are evaluated on their horsemanship skills. Then they get to choose which activities they will participate in, even the youngest campers. “For some children this is the first time they’ve had to make a decision about anything,” Freddie comments. “We run it like college registration. All the activities are laid out, and for children having difficulty deciding, there are “roamers”, counselors who help them through it.” Activities range from high-intensity sports such as the high ropes course, water skiing, kayaking, lacrosse, volleyball, wrestling to less strenuous pursuits such as drama, guitar, journalism, arts and crafts, scrap booking. There is also animal care and gardening. There are over thirty-five activities to choose from. The programs are run separately and the two camps don’t interact, except on Sundays, when everyone gathers for chapel. Occasionally there is a special event like the carnival, picnic or end of term dance. The first year a camper attends, he or she will draw for tribes that have existed since 1921: girls join either the Kiowa or Chickasaw Tribe, and boys choose either the Sioux or Golden Arrow Tribe. Tribes are an integral part of the Vista programs and campers take great pride in their membership. Tradition is important at Vista Camps. Third and fourth generation campers now attend the 30 | APRIL 2011

camps and Freddie adds, “Children who were campers in my cabin when I was a counselor now have their children coming to camp. It’s great to see my campers bringing their children back to camp and sharing the same experiences.” Head Cook Becky Green is now in her twenty-fifth year of providing meals for a staff of 90 and 250 campers each term. Recently Sarah Kendrick was brought on board as office secretary. Her father was a counselor at the camp and she was a camper, counselor and now her daughter attends the camp. Many of the camp counselors were once campers themselves. While we often think of camp as being a big adjustment for kids, sometimes it’s the parents who have to learn to let go. A few years ago a mother was insistent that her ten-year-old son keep his cell phone.

But the camps have a “no electronics” rule. She said, “I can’t believe there’s a camp without cell phones!” Eventually she relented and when she came to pick up her son admitted, “It was hard on me, but it didn’t seem to bother him.” Indeed, while sack loads of mail arrive every week from parents and friends, campers find it hard to squeeze in time to write back. Because once-a-week letters home are mandatory, they are often brief. “Campers must turn in their letter every week,” says Freddie, “but sometimes it feels like the envelope is empty! Still it lets their parents know they’re okay.” Children come from all over the country and all over the world to attend Rio Vista and Sierra Vista camps. “Some of the city kids are so amazed to see a deer or an armadillo,” says Freddie. The staff, too, always includes several from

foreign countries, which is another way for campers to be exposed to new ideas and points of view. As all good things must come to an end, September arrives. “It takes me about a month to wind down,” remarks John. “Even the dogs are sad. There are no more dropped ice cream cones for them to lap up, no more kids to love and play with them.” Looking out at the immaculate tennis courts it’s easy to imagine the thwack of a yellow ball against a racquet, and happy shouts when a shot is made. It’s easy, too, to see in the Hawkins brothers the boys who slid into home plate or jumped from a rope into the Guadalupe River. You can take the kid out of camp, but you can’t take the cherished memories of camp out of the kid. Or the grown man. mykerrville.org | 31

B

y typical standards, it was a normal Saturday morning. My kids (5 & 7 years) rose with the sun asking for breakfast, the dog needed to go outside and yet again, I did not get to sleep in. However, there was one difference about today than a normal Saturday; my boys did not want to watch tv but rather wanted to go shoot guns. So, the boys and I got dressed and loaded in the car with my shotgun and some ammo and left mom at home. This was the day the boys were participating in their 1st shotgun tournament. We had been practicing at home, but now it was time to showcase their skills in public. We were taking part in the 2nd Annual Boil & Blast hosted by the Kerrville Young Men’s Business League (YMBL). Participants matched their skeet shooting skills against others of all skill ranges from people like myself and my boys who are not trap & skeet shooters but enjoy shooting anyway to competitive shooters. After our shoulders were sore enough, we were able to enjoy all the crawfish we could eat. The Boil & Blast is the signature fundraising event for the YMBL and is what allows their continued support of DreamKamp. For the past 14 years, YMBL’s mission has been to make an impact in local children’s lives through a

monetary support of DreamKamp. When it’s all said and done, the goal is to help the kids become better leaders within their own communities, within their own families. To get them to think about giving back and not just about themselves. DreamKamp is a week-long summer camp that provides an enriching, outdoor & spiritual leadership camp experience for 5th and 6th graders of Kerr County who show strong leadership potential among their peers. From learning to safely point and shoot a rifle, to saddling and riding a horse for the first time and gathering the courage to jump off of a 600-foot-zipline platform, DreamKamp teaches life skills via challenges, new experiences, and plenty of fun. An equally important aspect of the DreamKamp experience involves evening discussions on Christian values with leaders from the community, including such topics as faith, hope, charity, courage, and community. The event came about because the YMBL wanted to do something different and get away from the typical fundraiser like another golf tournament or dinner and create something that could be a fun, family event. A lot of people in Kerrville and the surrounding area like to shoot and everybody enjoys good food; so it made

sense to combine the two and the whole thing just clicked. It was guns, crawfish and beer (in that order) for a good cause and anybody who wanted to be part of it was welcome no matter their skill level. When we arrived at the gun club, we were greeted with the fervent atmosphere of shotguns firing and a strong smell of crustaceans cooking. We shot, missed a lot, laughed with friends, ate way too much and had a blast. In the end, I think my boys hit as many clays as I did and probably played with the more crawfish than they ate, but for us the event wasn’t about the competition but rather raising money for a good cause while around friends and having fun.

Danny began doing small landscape jobs on the side during high school. His studies in horticulture and drafting prompted his desire to pursue landscape as a career. The business grew steadily to include complete landscape design and installation, irrigation, water features, flagstone, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and landscape lighting. In 2005 his dream of opening a retail nursery came true. Today sons Logan and Tobin are project managers and Wendy manages the nursery. It is truly a family business built the American way‌ from the ground up.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF DOING BUSINESS IN KERRVILLE? Having grown up here, our customers are friends and neighbors. We work with our teachers, bankers, insurance agents, car salesmen‌so many people we have connections with. Gardening in the Hill Country can be extremely challenging. Being able to share our knowledge through a lifetime of experience is very rewarding. It is also a pleasure to welcome those who have just made the choice to make Kerrville their home.

IN WHAT WAYS HAS THE CHAMBER BEEN A RESOURCE FOR YOU?

The chamber offers many wonderful resources for networking with fellow business men and women in the community. It also provides a wide support system to those new residents who are searching for help in becoming established in the Hill Country.

WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO FOR THE COMMUNTIY?

We support our local garden clubs and nature centers as well as provide free information about gardening in the Hill Country. Helpful garden tips and printouts can be found on our website and questions can be answered by our 3 Texas Certified Nurseryman at our nursery location. In sharing our knowledge we hope to encourage more use of drought tolerant natives to help with water conservation. We also sponsor the annual Water Conservation Landscape Contest.

MISSION STATEMENT:

Our mission is to create an enjoyable and sustainable business which provides Texas Hill Country gardeners with quality customer service, information and education on well adapted plants, organics products and techniques in order to help insure successful gardening in and otherwise challenging environment.
