A Chamber Membership: Let me count the benefits I’d like to talk about the worth of a Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce membership. The first thing you need to understand clearly is that the annual membership fee is not an expense, but an investment. It is a balance sheet item and not an income statement entry. It is like buying a stock or bond, not paying an electric or water bill. When you buy a piece of commercial real estate, you analyze the return on investment. When you write a check for the electric bill, it is a cost with no return. Webster’s definition of ‘benefit’ is “anything contributing to improvement; to receive an advantage; to profit from”. Over the years, I’ve been a member of Chambers of Commerce in Austin, Oklahoma City, and was Chairman of the Southeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce. I have never been a member of any Chamber with such a long list of benefits as the Kerrville Chamber. Let’s start by looking at the Chamber website…www. kerrvilletx.com. This website gets a huge number of hits each month, with people from all over the country looking for a wide array of information. And yes, if you have a website for your business, you can be direct-linked to your site’s home page through the Chamber’s site. That benefit alone should be worth your investment in the Kerrville Chamber. But wait, that’s only one of the many benefits available that can give you a positive return on your investment. The monthly mixers, lunches and breakfasts held throughout the year offer great networking opportunities for Chamber members with attendance at each of these events averaging around two hundred people. If you’re a business, attend these monthly events, meet only five new people at each one….. you’ve met sixty new prospects in a year. A piece of business from just one of these new contacts could pay for your Chamber membership multiple times over. Another big benefit was started over six years ago...The James Avery Hill Country Golf Classic. The primary purpose of the event was not to be a fundraiser, but to bring people to the Hill Country and expose them to our community and its’ businesses. Last year’s event fielded one hundred and thirteen two-man teams with 28% being new teams and 60% being from outside of this immediate area. The participants spend four or five days here…a great economic boost to our community.
10 | MARCH 2011
Another real benefit is the number of people that volunteer their time to help make everything the Chamber does successful. We have a Board of Directors of over twenty individuals that meet at least once a month to develop the Chamber’s annual strategic plan and make sure it gets implemented. The Board members, the multiple committees, and the professional staff stay aware of the local, state, and national issues that can affect your business and/or our community, and work to be proactive on these issues. While the Chamber provides great benefits, make no mistake about it, you and your business have to be proactive in taking advantage of them. You must be a user of the benefits available for them to contribute to improving your business and making it profitable. Please don’t think that you can just pay your membership fee, then sit back and wait for customers to come running to your doorstep. You must get involved, become part of the equation, and take advantage of what the Chamber provides. In closing, I would like to add some thoughts about being a business owner in a challenging economy like we are currently in. You do not want to withdraw from things like mixers and networking events that put you in front of prospects, remove yourself from the direct-link with a busy website, or think that saving some money by not purchasing or renewing a Chamber membership will get you through to the other side. The return on investment you can get from a Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce membership should make its purchase a sensible thing to do…year in and year out. Bob Waller Chairman of the Board Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce

TRUST, BUT VERIFY
By Dr. Brad Zirkel, OTD Ronald Regan explained it best when he said, “Trust, but verify.” With so many types of background checks available and with so many different standards, how are discerning consumers expected to educate themselves on the various businesses in the marketplace when so many companies advertise that they perform background checks? In the field of consumer protection, we at Better Consumer Choices have seen and heard both the good and the bad. In one instance we found a company whose employees wore patches on their uniforms saying simply, “Background Checked.” Upon clarification we found the statement to be true. However, it was deceiving, because many of the employees wearing the patch had not passed the background check. How would a consumer know this was a deception? Another example had us quite surprised when we consulted with a firm whose background check standards were even more stringent than our own. The owner of the company was overjoyed to learn of the BCC mission and said that his industry has been waiting for someone who could validate companies, such as his, as being as honest as advertised. He now supplements his marketing material with the BCC shield logo to better educate the consumers in his market. At Better Consumer Choices our mission is to seek out and promote honest businesses with honest employees. We feel it is the right of the consumer to know who is coming into their home or place of work. Anyone can claim that their company background checks employees, but only third party verification validates those claims to the public. In a time when there are many tools available to a consumer regarding products, performance, and price, Better Consumer Choices is leading the consumer protection industry by taking a proactive stance in providing a network of verified business to consumers. To a business, this verification means improved hiring, a quality workforce, and consumer education. To a consumer, this verification means you can trust again. mykerrville.org | 15

CENTURY 21 MALSON REAL ESTATE REALTOR/Sales associate
Married to trumpet player George. We have 3 terrific married kids and 6 absolutely wonderful grandkids!
Family:
Education: BA in Education from Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, NE
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN KERRVILLE? We arrived the summer of 1989
after George retired from 22 years in the AF at Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo. We fell in love w/this town and area--and we still love it!
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE BEST ASPECTS OF KERRVILLE? The river, of course, in my opinion is the number one. Close behind is the scenery, the weather and the close proximity to San Antonio. And, the people rate at the top also!
how does what you do in your job impact/affect the community?
Real Estate, in my opinion, is the heartbeat of a community. It is an integral part of the growth--both residential and commercial. REALTORS are, more
often than not, the first people new residents get to know. Our attitudes and how we project and reflect our community can have a big effect on those new residents.
if there was one thing you could change about the community of kerrville, what would it be? Kerrville is a delightful community. However, if there is one thing that has not been done, in my opinion, it is a master plan for what we are going to look like when we grow up. We continually talk about a master plan--but that is all we have done--just talk. Until that happens and we do what is best for Kerrville, we will continue to lose ground. We have a river that should have been the center of that plan. but still land along it is sold for businesses that should be located in other areas. The river has not been protected and utilized in ways that make it one of the best assets in our community. We operate by the seat of our pants-and not a good, wise, plan. We are changing; but I am not sure we are growing up.

A
long term vision toward the revitalization of downtown Kerrville has come to reality in the recent completion and dedication of the Pavilion/promenade project. The Daughtry Memorial Pavilion together with the related promenade deck and Schreckenbach Memorial Overlook provide a striking new amenity along the bluff between the Bank of America and One Schreiner Center for all to enjoy, both residents and visitors to our community. The facility features the beautiful pavilion soaring above its massive pillared flood-proof foundations and extending out over the river corridor, affording an unobstructed panoramic view of the Guadalupe River, the falls and the rapids below, and the park and trails and the hills beyond. The 1,600 square foot structure with its standing seam metal roof and beautiful stained wood ceiling and composite decking also includes soft lighting for evening use. A dozen rustic Texas-style benches are strategically located on the deck, together with several decorative waste receptacles. Five pictorial historic exhibits, designed by Schreiner University graphic arts students, are mounted along the railings. The pavilion truly affords a place to relax and meditate, to meet friends, to bring a sack lunch and a book, or just stand at the railing and take in the view and the sound of the falls. Herons and kingfishers are commonly sighted standing in the rapids or along the shore. Deer occasionally wade across the river and an eagle has recently been spotted soaring above the opposite wooded area. It is expected that increasingly the pavilion will become a venue for community and group events. It all started as a spin-off of Kerrville’s Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 2002, when two of the members of the comprehensive planning advisory committee, Dave Tritenbach and the late Linda Lashley, gathered an informal group of interested citizens who picked up on the plan’s suggestion of a downtown “boardwalk” to help revitalize Kerrville’s historic center and relate it to the Guadalupe River. The group evolved into the 501-(c)3 organization, Central Kerrville Development Corporation (CKDC), which over a period of years, after overcoming many chal-
lenges and hurdles and with several major revisions to the original plan, has brought the vision to reality. Fundraising efforts generated nearly $1 million, which covered architect and engineering costs and approximately $800,000 for the construction of the facility. Well over 100 citizens and organizations contributed funds toward the project, which was built entirely with private donations. No tax funds were used. It is a gift to the city, and now becomes part of the city’s developing park system along the Guadalupe River corridor. The major contributor was Carol Daughtry who gave $350,000 in memory of her husband, after whom the Daughtry Pavilion has been named. Other major contributors include HEB, James Avery, Granger MacDonald, Comanche Trace, Pat Schreckenbach after whose wife the “bump-out” overlook at the end of the promenade is memorialized, and Integrity Homes who did the major part of the construction at a generous discount. Contributions of all sizes, large and small, were gratefully received, and a number of commemorative markers have been placed where naming opportunities were made available. In addition, many individuals and businesses made in-kind contributions, not the least of which were Brent Bates who became the contractor for the completion of the project and Lee Spaulding, who coordinated the volunteer labor. I would be remiss if I did not also express appreciation for the many faithful persons who over the past several years gave many hours serving on the CKDC board of which I served as president for six years. Members of the city staff including City Manager Todd Parton, Assistant City Manager Kristine Ondrias, and Park Superintendent Malcolm Matthews have been most supportive and helpful as we were finishing up the project. The Pavilion/promenade project, though now virtually complete, has yet to have five light posts added to the promenade deck. The commemorative plaques for three of them are being held by the park department awaiting fabricating and installation of these features which will be designed to match the rustic style downtown street
light posts. As Kerrville’s historic downtown continues to show signs of revitalization, not the least of which are the restoration of the historic Schreiner Department store building and the Arcadia Theater, the Pavilion stands at the hub of the district, linking downtown with the Guadalupe River, both visually and via the adjacent stairway providing access to the river itself and its developing trail system. And now, interest is being expressed to explore continuing the boardwalk promenade and additional overlooks in both directions from this first phase of what could be a greatly expanded continuous pedestrian amenity along the river bluff, transforming Kerrville’s backyard into its front porch. If you have not yet seen or been out on the pavilion, I encourage you to check it out — and bring your camera. You’ll be amazed by the view.

Tr iten bach David Tritenbach is a retired Presbyterian minister who served several pastorates in California and the Pacific Northwest, and in New Zealand, as well as interim pastorates in Idaho, New Mexico, and Ingram, Texas. With his long-term interest in downtown revitalization, he served on the Landmarks Preservation Commission in Tacoma, Washington, and is a graduate of Leadership Nampa, in Nampa, Idaho, where he also chaired a Chamber of Commerce Downtown Design Guidelines Committee. He served on Kerrville’s Comprehensive Planning Advisory Committee and as President of Central Kerrville Development Corporation. As a member of KDBA he continues to be actively interested and engaged in downtown interests including the exploration of the possibilities for a downtown convention center. Each day is basically a new tournament so you always have something to play for. The three courses are all wonderful- each one has its own particular beauty and difficulty. You have to be able to adjust to different conditions and course setups to play well. It is nice having a partner to share the challenge of the competition!
How does it compare to other tournaments you’ve played in from your area?
I always look forward to coming to play in this event. It has its own distinct atmosphere where you can compete but win or lose you still have a great time!

Top Breaking the Mold with Thomas Houdeshell & ATEK Plastics Story by Mary Lee Gowland P h o t o s b y A a r o n Ya t e s
Y
ou’d never guess by looking at the outside of ATEK Plastics what a world of wonder exists inside. The 67,000 square foot facility on Holdsworth Drive – offices, warehouse, and manufacturing – is a hidden technological wonder. Spotlessly clean, each area attests to the professionalism of the fifty-eight employees who produce a staggering 170 – 200 million plastic components per year, mostly for medical device industry. HIGH TECH MAGIC It seems like magic that giant machines can do all this: raw material (small plastic pellets that the majority are shipped from Houston), is heated to roughly 450 degrees. The plastic in the liquid state is injected into the steel molds, forming the components. Tom along with his Engineering Manager, Bradley Atkins recently created a new “Patent Pending” In- Mold Labeling process (labels are automatically inserted into the steel molds and the label 30 | MARCH 2011
is bonded to the component) this process is considered one of the most advanced technologies in North America. After the components are molded using our scientific methodology they are automatically placed in a box ready for shipment. This process ensures that the product meets the customer’s specifications. One of the items ATEK manufactures is for stem cell research; it is used to separate good blood cells from bad in the treatment of diabetes. UNDERSTANDING A CHANGING MARKET Originally, ATEK was a manufacturer of automotive parts and other commercial plastic-injected items. Where there once was 15,000 plastic manufacturers in the United States, the total has plummeted to 6,000, with a third of these headed toward bankruptcy. Tom Houdeshell, ATEK president since 2001, saw the changes coming. He has spent his entire career
“There are three keys to success: reliability, credibility and dependability.” -Thomas Houdeshell
in the plastics industry and has worked every facet of manufacturing. He also understands that in business a company must grow or die. So, four years ago ATEK shifted from the automotive/commercial roots to the burgeoning medical field. “It’s called Industrial Darwinism”, Tom says, the ability of a company to succeed while others are going under. Where someone else may see failure, Tom with his positive attitude, sees opportunity. He recently purchased an injection molding machine that was worth $200,000 for $45,000 and thus expanding ATEK’s manufacturing capacity. A key part of success in the plastics business is managing capital equipment. In this industry you are in it for the long haul because it is so capital intensive. “I’ve been called a turn-around guy,” Tom says. “But I don’t need that drama. I want to surround myself with a base of trustworthy folks.” In the warehouse and factory, banners display the key to success: Safety, Growth, Zero Defects and
Operational Excellence. “We’re a Ferrari engine in a Chevy body,” Tom jokes. But one can see the degree of excellence ATEK has achieved when touring the immaculate factory which runs round-the-clock. A native of Ohio, Tom earned an MBA and BBA from Tiffin University and also has extensive training in Lean Six Sigma and Scientific Molding. He was Vice President of Progress Plastics in Bellevue, Ohio from 1983-1993, then President of TQM in Troy, Michigan, 1993-1995. From there he moved to North Carolina where he turned around a failing injection molding company. He developed a strong management support team by clearly defining goals, expectations and budgets and giving associates the freedom to excel in their respective disciplines. “There are three keys to success,” says Tom, “reliability, credibility and dependability.” ATEK’s spotless reputation 100% on-time delivery, four years running, with zero defects, mykerrville.org | 31
has created excellent relationships with his customers, who often come to Kerrville to see their products being made. ATEK also undergoes regular rigorous quality audits. In 2010 it was ranked in the top 2% of processors in the industry and received an “A” on a report card on the North American Plastics Industry Study. ATEK Plastics has also been selected by Plastics News (backed by the Society of Plastics Industry) as one three molders in North America for the processor of the year award, with the winner to be announced March 8th in Las Vegas. ATEK Plastics is an ISO13485 medical device registered facility. AASTROM PARTNERSHIP Last year ATEK formed a partnership with Michiganbased Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. which develops 32 | MARCH 2011
expanded autologous (blood forming stem cells) cellular therapies based on bone marrow samples. Cell therapies developed through its automated, proprietary cellmanufacturing system are given back to patients to re-grow damaged tissues. Aastrom President and CEO Tim Mayleben said, “ATEK has an outstanding track record in leveraging its technology expertise to produce high-quality components and medical devices, and to improve and upgrade procedures used in the manufacture and processing of novel therapies.” BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY “I love what I do,” says Tom Houdeshell. Heavily influenced by Jim Collins’ book Good to Great, he understands that good business starts with well educated workers. Every
month employees receive a Monthly Narrative with their paychecks, so everyone is involved and aware. The Employee of the Month has a cherished parking space; there are rewards for attendance, profit sharing and everyone kicks back at annual parties. “The neat thing,” says Tom, “is I’m training entrepreneurs.” By passing information and knowledge on to his employees, they get an overview of the entire operation. This creates a cohesive team, more like a family. Many of the employees have worked at ATEK for fifteen years or more.
They are avid supporters of the Kerrville Public School system, Peterson Regional Medical Center Foundation, Kerrville Little League and the Kerrville Indians. Tom appreciates the Chamber of Commerce and calls it, “a real asset. We’ve been members of the Chamber for many years.” He believes the Chamber will be instrumental when the time comes to add more skilled individuals to the ATEK team. And by the looks of this thriving business, that time may be sooner, than later.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Tom is a board member of the MAPP (Manufactures Association of Plastic Processors) Presidents and Owners of plastics companies, YMCA, Kerrville Economic Development and Business Advisory of Schreiner University. He is a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers, San Antonio Manufacturers Association and Gulf Coast Medical Device Manufacturers. He and his wife Melanie have three children, Andrew 8, Evan 7, and Elise 4. Tom is an Ordained Elder and Melanie is a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church. mykerrville.org | 33

LIBERTY
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
TAX SERVICES
Terry TeNery & Traci Bond
Year Opened: January 1, 2005 Education: Terry has a BBA in Management from Our Lady of the
Lake University, San Antonio, TX and Traci has a BBA in Management from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX Together we have a combined 60 plus years in tax and accounting experience!
How did you get in this business? We had been researching some business opportunities when we stumbled upon the Liberty Tax Franchise in the fall of 2004. After a quick trip to Virginia Beach, we were ready to open our doors that January! The Liberty system has provided us with so many tools, plans, education, training, etc. in order to make our business such a success. The company culture is just amazing! In October 2010 we were recognized as a “Top Gun” for our performance and ability to embrace the Liberty culture!
What is your favorite aspect of doing business in Kerrville? We have lived in Kerrville for 34 years, and it is so
wonderful to be able to offer a service that people need, and many of those people are folks we’ve known all of this time. The small town nature of Kerrville is what has helped us be so successful. We really are the same person you see at the grocery store, next door, walking the dog, participating in fundraisers…it’s amazing to see and recognize your clients every where you go!
In what ways has the Chamber been a resource to you? The chamber has allowed us the opportunity to network with
other business owners, to learn from them and to hopefully offer something back! A big part of our marketing during tax season is our Business-toBusiness campaign. We are the cookie people! Traci has also been a chamber ambassador for several years, which gives us another chance to meet new people and gain a new familiar face in the community.
What does your business do for the community? We give back what we can through various programs. In March we do appreciation weeks for the hardworking teachers, fire/police officers, healthcare workers, veterans etc., as a thank you for their unselfish contributions to our community! Out of the office, you can find us as volunteers at many fundraising events such as Relay for Life, Here’s to the Heroes Easter Festival, and many of the Chamber’s events.

On April 15, 2011, Hill Country CARES will host our 8th annual Women 2 Women fundraising event at the Avery’s Alegria Party Barn. It’s a fun, festive evening just for women. Women 2 Women’s theme is “An Ultimate Evening in White” including a cocktail reception, gourmet dinner with wine parings, and entertainment along with a silent and live auction. This year’s goal is to surpass our guests expectations and to increase the visibility for our various programs. Hill Country CARES is a nonprofit organization serving the needs of women and children who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, seniors in crisis and caregiver support. We provide a 24 emergency shelter for women and their dependent children, counseling, legal aid, advocacy, support groups, education and prevention in schools, forensic interviewing in child abuse cases. Our service area includes Kerr, Kendall, Gillespie, Bandera, and Kimble counties. Your support as an underwriter or table sponsor will allow us to continue and expand this wide array of services free of charge to our clients. Your participation enables Hill Country CARES to attract and meet the match requirements for government and private grants which fund the bulk of our operations. Every local dollar counts! We need you. “An Ultimate Evening in White” package offers financial underwriting, table sponsorships
and auction item donations. Your sponsorship will enable you to increase community awareness of your services while contributing to the fight for the health and safety of families and our communities. Please consider joining us in this effort. We look forward to discussing how you and your company could partner with us to fight against domestic violence and sexual assault. GROUNDBREAKING CANCER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY IN
KERRVILLE &
HILL COUNTRY
Kerrville, TX - The Centers for Cancer Care are proud to announce the installation of two new cancer treatment tools in our Kerrville location, The Hill Country Center for Cancer Care. Just this month, we have taken delivery of a completely new radiotherapy unit and treatmentplanning CT scanner. These two new state of the art units raise the bar for oncologic care in the Hill Country. Our newly-installed Linear Accelerator is from the well regarded Varian Corporation, which is known as the gold standard for this technology worldwide. It will offer unparalleled real-time treatment localization and dose management, allowing our treatment teams to hit hard at cancer cells, while being more gentle than ever to healthy tissues nearby. This level of control and precision contribute to fewer side effects for our patients, improved accuracy in treatment delivery, and a better overall exp erience. This exciting step forward helps us do an even better job at turning cancer patients into cancer survivors. Working in tandem with this new accelerator is our new
General Electric LightSpeed Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner. Also just installed, this advanced CT scanner allows our cancer specialists to get immediate and accurate imagery for our patients just steps away from where their treatment is
actually delivered. “This bold step brings a new level of precision and ability to our Kerrville practice,” said Valerian Chyle, M.D., Medical Director of the Hill Country Center for Cancer Care. “This major treatment upgrade gives
us the same IMRT technology used at Johns Hopkins, The Mayo Clinic, and MD Anderson Cancer Treatment Centers, and will set a higher standard for what can be expected of small-town cancer care.” Founded in 1997, The Centers for Cancer Care are focused exclusively on bringing advanced treatment technologies and talented cancer care professionals to small communities throughout Texas. With established locations in San Marcos, Kerrville, Bastrop, New Braunfels, and Kyle, our independent, M.D.-managed offices bring “big-city” technology and talent to the people who need them most. The Centers for Cancer Care are also happy to announce that construction is underway on new sister clinics in Fredericksburg, Uvalde, and Marble Falls that will bring quality care even closer to home for Texas patients. JOB
Photos Courtesty of Kerrville Daily Times
From marine biology to floral design to taxidermy work, students have a vast array of career choices to ponder. Groundhog Job Shadowing Day is dedicated to helping students become better prepared for their future careers by engaging them in comprehensive job shadowing experiences by introducing students to the requirements of professions and industries to help them prepare to join the workforce. This program encourages mentoring between young people and caring adults and inspires a shared responsibility across all sectors for the development of a competitive, adaptable, and successful workforce. Our Chamber Education Committee works diligently all year long to provide this and other experiences for our local students through events
that demonstrate the connection between academics and careers, motivating students to learn by making their class work more relevant. In fact, this year was the first year that a student has been able to go through all of the education committee’s programs: from the 6th Grade Speakers Event to the Career Expo, rounding it out with Job Shadowing. Thank you again to our committee for your dedication to this program! On February 3, 192 students, a.k.a. groundhogs, shadowed 80 businesses for an opportunity to get a “taste of the real world”. Thank you to our hosts— we couldn’t do it without you!

ROLE MODEL Social Competence Creates Social Confidence in Teens By Kay Tally-Foos What assets can propel a young person successfully into the future? What are those skills and attributes that enable a young person to function well day-to-day? For more than fifty years the Search Institute has studied the assets a young person needs to be what is termed “Socially Competent.” Can he or she plan for long projects over time? How are their interpersonal skills? Are they tolerant of other belief systems and cultures? Can they resist peer pressure and solve problems peacefully? Unfortunately, when a young person is lacking the Social Competence assets, she/he is in particular danger of making poor decisions that affect physical safety. When unable to resist peer’s bad choices, or being able to resolve conflict peacefully, a young person can suddenly find him or herself in dangerous situations. How do adults help young people grow these assets and stay physically and emotionally safe?
The prescription for this asset growth is: Model and Dialogue. Be aware of how you refer to others in the presence of young people, sit down with your child, grandchild, or young employee, and plan out a project by setting milestones along the way to have a project completed without leaving it for the last minute. Talk about their choices and making their own decisions, and discuss possible outcomes to decisions (both positive and negative). Be sure the young people who see you each day (whether it is at work or home) can grow up healthy and whole by “doing what you do.” Are you the model you would like to be? Contact Kay TallyFoos at kay.tally-foos@ p a r t n e r s i n m i n i s t r y. c o m to find out how to put the Assets to work in your place of business. Healthy young people will make Kerr County a better place to do business.
