From adrenaline-fueled ziplines to thrilling whale watching, Greater Victoria offers year-round outdoor fun BY KELLIE HOLT Orca abound in the local waters.

ALAN HEARTFIELD

Victoria’s temperate climate makes it perfect for outdoor excitement all year long. Explore on two feet, on two wheels, by boat, even on a zipline.

SPRING Clear spring skies offer the perfect backdrop for a leisurely hike. Stroll along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, which meanders west of Victoria, or go north to Swartz Bay on the Lochside Regional Trail for a picturesque walk through the woods. Victoria boasts courses for golfers of all skill levels, from miniature golf to Nicklaus Design greens. Tee off on a Golf Vancouver Island scenic course while you soak up stunning 360-degree views. Beginners are welcome, too, with the option for private or group lessons.

SUMMER Lace up your hiking boots and tackle Victoria’s mountainous surroundings on foot. Hit the Trans-Canada Trail, a network of trails that spans from coast to coast. Start at Mile Zero in Beacon Hill Park, then follow the trail along the waterfront. On a clear day, you’ll get a striking view across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Olympic Mountains. You can’t visit Victoria without catching a glimpse of more than 80 orca that call the surrounding waters home. The best way to spot these beautiful creatures? By boat. Several local whale watching companies offer tours in vessels ranging from open, zippy Zodiacs to heated, covered boats. Orca and humpback sightings are most frequent in the summer months, from May to August.

Pedestrian friendly Tour FORT RODD HILL, a coastal artillery fort built in the 1890s. You’ll see gun batteries, command posts, guardhouses and barracks. Climb the hill to reach Fisgard Lighthouse, then head back down to the waterfront for views of the Olympic Mountains.

Starting in Beacon Park and continuing along the waterfront toward the Sidney International Ferry Terminal, SIDNEY SEASIDE SCULPTURE WALK is an outdoor gallery highlighted by magnificent views of Mount Baker and the Salish Sea. Sculptures along Sidney's waterfront

Local companies offer fishing boat charters with a knowledgeable crew – perfect for families, new fishers or experienced anglers. Known as the “Cycling Capital” of Canada, Victoria is full of bike-friendly trails. The Beacon Hill Loop is a six-kilometre trail with up-close views of iconic buildings such the Fairmont Empress Hotel. ON THE

In Victoria, how you get around is as enjoyable as what you see while out and about. Even getting here can involve a wonder-filled ferry ride where whales and seals are often your oceanic companions.

COURTESY OF CANADIAN TOURISM COMMISSION

Move Move Move Guided tours not only show you Greater Victoria, they also grant you access to the local secrets of this special destination BY COREY VAN’T HAAFF

Explore downtown Victoria on a quintessential carriage ride.

Victoria Carriage Tours

HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGES Hear the clip-clop of hooves as a horse pulls your private carriage. Any of the horses at Tally-Ho are sure to give an Old World feel to your visit. At Victoria Carriage Tours, the Belgian, Percheron and Clydesdale draft horses escort you about town, allowing you to enjoy the scenery. Tour the Inner Harbour in total comfort, and don’t worry; horse and passenger safety is paramount.

My Victoria Vacation

Don’t miss

VADYM GRAIFER

Seeing Victoria from the water is almost mandatory. Climb aboard a tall ship, Victoria Harbour Ferry and even help hoist the sails, when you book a tour with A 3 Hour Sail – keep an eye out for bald eagle sightings. Victoria Harbour Ferry boasts happy people and happy boats, especially during the daily Pickle Pub Crawl, which transports passengers to lively and notable pubs around Victoria. Victoria Harbour Ferry also showcases waterballet performances on weekends, which you can watch from the Inner Harbour.

THE GATE OF HARMONIOUS INTEREST. Listen

for the chimes warding off evil spirits on your ride through Chinatown.

Don’t miss SEALS. The resident seals at Fisherman’s

Wharf are so cute and entertaining that there’s even a live, streaming “seal cam” to record all of their playful antics.

“With ships bobbing in the bay, street performers strumming a tune and grand, ivycovered buildings watching over the waterfront, every angle of Victoria feels as though it has been imagined by a master illustrator.” Trish Friesen, Expedia Viewfinder Travel Blog

KAYAKS & PADDLEBOARDS Master stand-up paddleboarding (also known as SUP) along Victoria’s Inner Harbour, or brave the open water on a sunset kayak tour, where city lights and river otters set the scene. Book either of these activities with Ocean River Kayak Adventures. Visit the Harbour Seal rookeries via kayak with Kelp Reef Adventures and picnic in a bull kelp forest. Pacifica Paddle Sports offers kayak and paddleboard lessons and rentals, and with locations in Brentwood Bay and Canoe Cove, you’ll enjoy world-class paddling with marine life close by.

Harbour Air Seaplanes

FLOATPLANES From the air, you will marvel at the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca and be treated to stunning views of downtown Victoria on Harbour Air Seaplanes panorama tours. Kenmore Air makes it a cinch to travel from Seattle to Victoria, and they can package a scenic tour for you in a blink.

Gray Line Sightseeing Victoria

TOUR BUSES One of the best ways to get a comprehensive tour of the city is by bus with hop-on and hop-off opportunities. For an open-air bus or a turn-of-the-century trolley (both with hop-on and hop-off stops), go with Big Bus Victoria. Ride the British, double-decker bus with Gray Line Sightseeing Victoria, also with hop-on, hop-off privileges. CVS Sightseeing and Tours also offers an exceptional tour of downtown highlights. For more bus companies, see the listings starting on page 38.

BIKES Victoria is on track to become one of the most bikeable small cities in the world. And with good reason: local companies offer diverse cycling tours and rentals for riders to roam on their own, while Greater Victoria boasts an abundance of bike paths, not to mention the natural scenic beauty of the destination. See for yourself.

Cycling the Capital Regional District trails

DOUG CLEMENT

The Capital Regional District maintains extensive cycling trails from Victoria to Sooke or Sidney – rent a road bike, a cruiser or a mountain bike, then pick a trail and pedal away. Electric bike tours are the way to go if you don’t want to work too hard or need a push up those inclines. Pedego Victoria offers onehour, three-hour or full-day rentals. More guided tours come by way of The Pedaler. Sign up with this experienced crew to enjoy single-day trips, including themed tours.

Don’t miss CRAIGDARROCH CASTLE. Use a hop-off

stop here, where you’ll be immersed in Old World architecture, history and charm.

Don’t miss GALLOPING GOOSE AND LOCHSIDE REGIONAL TRAILS.

Originally freight railway lines, these trails are now part of the Trans Canada Trail – the world’s longest network of recreational trails – spanning the nation from the Pacific to the Atlantic oceans. tourismvictoria.com | 17

Just the facts Population Victoria (municipality): 83,200 Greater Victoria (Capital Regional District): 355,291 Vancouver Island: 748,937

Climate Victoria has moderate temperatures year-round. The average monthly rainfall in winter is 5 centimetres (2 inches) and in the summer is less than 2.5 centimetres (1 inch). Victoria has a low humidity ratio and almost constant offshore breezes, which keep summer days from becoming too hot. Summer evenings cool off and a sweater or light jacket is recommended. Victoria boasts an average of 2,183 hours of sunshine yearly and an eight-month frost-free season. Although winters are mild, warmer clothing is recommended November through March.
