Amazing Vacation Rentals!!

Fifty million years ago, molten lava flowed south into the Salish Sea, forming a solid rock peninsula we call SookePoint. This is the extreme SW Tip of Canada, surrounded by a rich undersea garden that attracts so many salmon and magnificent marine mammals, it’s the new home of the Centre for Whale Research.

Choose from an exclusive collection of thoughtfully designed Ocean Cottages & Yacht Suites, from 700 to 3,000+ square feet. This is full title ownership, and includes your waterfront land and home, tastefully furnished and accessorized, complete with cozy duvets and celebratory champagne glasses.

For a lifetime of amazing front row experiences, SookePoint Ocean Cottages have special approval to build three to six times closer to the water, so you can be anchored in solid rock just 5 metres (16’) from the sea. You’ll feel like you’re on a luxury yacht, with a huge glass wall opening onto a prow-shaped deck.

SookePoint’s unique cloverleaf peninsula has dramatic wrap-around oceanfront, like nowhere else. With exciting locations beside ‘Orca Alley’, ‘Surfside’ and ‘Sea Lion Central’ you may live here full time or benefit from dual resort zoning to earn premium overnight resort rental income (and even add an extra ‘Bonus Suite’ or two for revenue purposes.)

If you want the finest ringside seats for exciting nature shows, romantic sunsets and adrenaline storm watching on the leading edge of Canada’s South Pacific, nothing can compare with a SookePoint Ocean Cottage or Yacht Suite. Secure an unobstructed view forever, across to the U.S. snow-capped Olympic Mountains. Relax to soothing surf and romantic sunsets. Breathe the freshest of ocean air. Enjoy the lowest rainfall on the Wild West Coast and the warmest winters in Canada. Join the Orcas trophy fishing. Kayak among the humpbacks, eagles, seals and sea lions. Experience incredible underwater diving just below your deck. Hike the 6-hour (one-way) Coast Trail and explore 50 km (30 miles) of enchanting forest pathways in our adjoining 3,600-acre Wilderness Park.

Visit SookePoint at 1000 Silver Spray Drive, Sooke, in Greater Victoria, just 43 km (26 miles) from downtown. It’s under an hour from the airport and ferries, and half that to theatres and superstores - yet you’ll feel like you’re an entire world away. SookePoint Show Cottages are open 11 AM to 4 PM (or more) every day, and anytime by appointment: Text 604.329.4297, email sales@SookePoint.com or CALL 250.642.0350. WHERE T … A REGIONAL OVERVIEW ON WHERE (AND HOW) TO EXPERIENCE ICONIC VICTORIA By Corey Van’t Haaff

8 | Tourism Victoria 2017 | 800-663-3883

SIP LOCAL WINES: Cowichan Valley

This region has an abundance of wineries situated within 30 minutes of each other. Whether it’s reds and whites at Rocky Creek Winery or Averill Creek Vineyard’s Pinot Noir, there is no shortage of tastes. Like cider, too? Try the craft ciders (and spirits!) at Merridale Cidery & Distillery. Leave the driving to Cheers Cowichan Tours, experts who can arrange an afternoon tour. There are eight wineries associated with Cheers Cowichan (and they can accommodate more), so consider making a weekend of it.

PLUS The Cowichan Valley is also a favourite of outdoorsy folks. Protected bays make for tranquil kayaking. Loop trails on the Cowichan River Footpath offer rainforest views. And Kinsol Trestle gives hikers the opportunity to traverse one of the tallest free-standing timber rail trestle structures in the world. Don’t miss open-water excursions to see whales and other marine life with Ocean EcoVentures.

SAVOUR NATURE’S BOUNTY:

Saanich & Sidney

Experience any of the North Saanich Flavour Trail’s signature events, which showcase farmers’ market fare and sips from wineries, distilleries, breweries and cideries. For example, slip into Church & State Wines or DeVine Vineyard for a sip and a bite, or pop by Category 12 Brewing to see how beer gets made. The Roost Farm Centre grows its own wheat, veggies and more, while Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse maintains 10 acres with more than 1,300 apple trees. More bounty from the earth is on full display at The Butchart Gardens, a lavish collection of intricate gardens, painstakingly cared for blooms and meandering pathways perfect for strolling.

PLUS Saanich and Sidney also are ideal launching points for a trip to the Gulf Islands. At Swartz Bay, hop on a direct ferry ride to the Southern Gulf Islands (non-direct routes are offered to the Northern Gulf Islands). Salt Spring Island is the most populated, and it’s a must-stop. Galiano Island’s forested geography means hiking; try the 2.5-kilometre Bodega Ridge Trail. Rocky coves dot the bucolic landscape of Mayne Island, while Saturna Island welcomes travellers searching for quiet beauty and peaceful isolation. Try the Pinot Noir at Averill Creek Vineyard.

TAKE AFTERNOON TEA: Victoria & Oak Bay

These regions are known for their exquisite tea rooms. Make reservations at the Fairmont Empress, where you can enjoy delectable eats and perfectly brewed tea in an elegant setting. The Pacific Restaurant entices with more than a dozen tea varieties, as does the White Heather Tea Room. At the Pendray Restaurant at The Gatsby Mansion, tea comes with views of ships gliding in and out of Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

There’s craft beer at Swans Brewpub; Vis à Vis tempts fans of French dishes; and 10 Acres Bistro + Kitchen + Commons + Farm uses only the freshest ingredients from its own farm, as well as other local farmers and fishermen. This is also the place to come for a rich cultural 10 Acres Bistro experience. Explore Victoria’s Chinatown, the oldest in Canada. Or discover First Nations’ heritage by seeing the totem poles in Beacon Hill Park or visiting the Royal BC Museum, home to artifacts, archives and objects that present natural history and chronicle and honour the diversity of British Columbia’s First Nations.

SECRETS OF

VICT RIA GO BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE REGION’S TOP ATTRACTIONS

MARK VUKOBRAT

By Sue Kernaghan

Drama, intrigue, doorways to nowhere. Victoria has her secrets and she guards them well. Here’s a backstage pass to the city’s lesser-known side.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM As one of Canada’s top museums, it’s no surprise that the Royal BC Museum has more going on than meets the eye. Kim Gough, the museum’s Learning Program Developer, points out details hidden in plain sight. The Old Town exhibit, for example, subtly shows the march of time with kerosene lights on one side of the street and electric lights on the other. And those cobbles under your feet? They’re actually Douglas fir blocks. In the First People’s Gallery, the model Secwepemc kekuli (meaning “pit house”) was built with the help of a Secwepemc elder. “Look for the notch down the back of the ladder; it acts as a handhold,” explains Gough. Intrigued? Get the inside scoop on one of the museum’s “Behind the Scenes” tours. And while at the museum, make time to catch a film at IMAX Victoria, the largest IMAX screen in British Columbia. 675 Belleville St., Victoria, 250-356-7226, royalbcmuseum.bc.ca

Explore every inch of the Royal BC Museum.

MIKHAIL BELIKOV

CASTLE CONFIDENTIAL A rich, powerful family mired in tragedy: Victoria’s Craigdarroch Castle outdoes prime time for domestic drama. The castle – actually a Victorian mansion – was commissioned by coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. Unfortunately, he died before it was completed, leading to years of legal battles. At one point, son James sued his own mother over the will. The mansion, where Joan Dunsmuir and three of her daughters entertained high society, also has its share of mystery.

Purple glass in Downtown Victoria

LET THERE BE LIGHT

You can’t use the door, but you can play the baby grand piano in the ballroom, climb to the tower room for sweeping views, and look for Laura Dunsmuir’s 14-karat-gold, jewelencrusted purse. Hint: Check the library. For more insider tips, try Craigdarroch’s new digital tour on the website’s Plan Your Visit page, where family members and servants spill the beans about life in the castle. 1050 Joan Cres., Victoria, 250-592-5323, thecastle.ca

MARK VUKOBRAT

“One of my favourites is the door to nowhere,” says Executive Director John Hughes. “It’s a beautiful door in the dining

room, but it goes…nowhere. If you used it you’d fall straight down to the street. We don’t have the original architect’s drawings, so we don’t know what it was for.”

In Downtown Victoria, as you stroll around the Yarrow Building – near Broad, Broughton and Fort streets – look for purple prisms embedded in the sidewalks. These were installed in the early 1900s to allow sunlight to filter into the basements below. The purple color is due to manganese (added to the clear glass as a stabilizer at the time), which then turned purple with exposure to sunlight. Want to see more purple prisms? They’re also on Douglas, Blanshard, lower Johnson and North Park streets.

Seek out the mystery at Craigdarroch Castle.

MARK VUKOBRAT

And those cool double-decker buses? A rarity in North America, the buses were launched in 2000 by BC Transit, not just as a nod to the city’s British heritage but also as a way to boost capacity on long-distance runs.

THE BIG WINNER One name you’ll hear a lot in Victoria is Francis Rattenbury. The young British immigrant was just 25 years old when he won a contest to design British Columbia’s new parliament buildings in 1892. Rattenbury went on to design many city landmarks, including the Empress Hotel, now the Fairmont Empress. Free tours of the Parliament Buildings reveal other such fascinating tidbits as the placement of the government and opposition benches. They’re two-and-ahalf sword lengths apart, just in case a duel breaks out. 501 Belleville St., Victoria, 250-387-3046, leg.bc.ca/learn-about-us/visiting-the-legislature Parliament Buildings

offers the best view of Victoria’s Inner and Outer Harbours, it’s easy to access and, best of all, it’s free. The constant flow of marine traffic makes for a nonstop show. If we get peckish or thirsty, we can always pit stop at SPINNAKERS or LURE for a pint and a bite.”

HIDDEN GEM Housed in a former hospital on an active naval base, the CFB Esquimalt Naval & Military Museum is one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets. Displays, including a Cold War fallout shelter, trace British Columbia’s naval history from early border disputes through two world wars and the nuclear age. A key focus here is the contribution – largely unsung – of women in Canada’s military. Fun fact: By the end of the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Navy was the third-largest navy in the world. 1299 Naden St., Victoria, 250-363-4312, navalandmilitarymuseum.org

THE SECRETS OF SMALL Emily Carr House & Garden was the childhood home of one of Canada’s best-loved artists and writers. Although it’s both a National and a Provincial Historic Site, this pretty Italianate villa is also a family home. Jan and Michael Ross, the resident curator and site manager respectively, have lived upstairs at the property for more than 20 years, raising two daughters there. Jan Ross reveals that, lacking photos, restorers used Emily Carr’s own journals and her autobiographical The Book of Small for such details as the colour of the wallpaper and the flowers grown in the garden. One key difference? Works of current-day local artists hang in the dining room, which doubled as Carr’s studio. “Emily dreamed of opening a People’s Gallery one day, so, in light of that, we exhibit local works here,” says Ross. Emily Carr used the dining room in her childhood home as her studio.

Hop aboard a Wilson’s Transportation bus for daily service from Victoria to the resort, and use IslandLink bus services and Tofino Bus to hit up other destinations on Vancouver Island.

COURTESY OF OCEAN RIVER ADVENTURES

Prefer to soar above it all by seaplane? With Harbour Air Seaplanes, choose the classic panoramic tour or book a romantic evening flight to The Butchart Gardens for dinner. The Victoria Flying Club specializes in Discovery Flights in small Cessnas. To really feel as though you’re among the birds, try Capital City Skydiving’s tandem skydive with an experienced skydiver.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate Golf Central’s ability to find and book the best golf course to meet your needs.

FITNESS GURUS

Victoria resident Sean Bruce has trouble picking just one favourite thing to do after a day’s adventure. We managed to get him to narrow it down to a few. Favourite brewery: microbrews at Canoe Brewpub Favourite cocktails: drinks at Veneto Favourite food: Red Fish Blue Fish Favourite way to unwind: picnic lunch on the beach along Dallas Road

Rent a kayak with a local outfitter, such as Ocean River Adventures.
