Chad Ward, the director of barbecue marketing for Traeger Grills, has racked up seven grand champion titles. We asked him to share a few of the reasons why Traeger has earned a rep as the go-to for backyard grillers — as well as a few tips.

Jack learned to grill at his dad’s knee and mastered the nuances of open fire cooking. The younger Arnold is soon to be a dad himself, so we asked him for his top Father’s Day grilling tips.

“It’s ideal for someone who wants the flavor of a great, wood-fired barbecue but wants to go on with their day — you can put on ribs, then play nine holes of golf,” Chad says.
Unlike a traditional grill, a Traeger keeps a steady temperature. “Meat just turns out better when it’s cooked at a consistent temperature,” he says.
“You don’t have to use your Traeger just for grilling,” Chad says. “You can bake in it, braise in it — it’s wood-fired perfection for just about anything.”
When determining doneness, feel is as important as the thermal reading. “When you slide the thermometer in, it should have the consistency of room-temperature butter,” he says. “In the middle, it should have some give. It’s going to cook some more when you let it rest.”
It’s essential to properly store the Traeger hardwood pellets. “You want to make sure you’re always keeping your pellets dry,” he says. “If they pick up moisture, they won’t burn as hot as they could.”
If you’re using sauce on those ribs, “wait until the last 10-15 minutes of the process, otherwise it can burn the sugars in the sauce and lead to off flavors.”
