SOCIETY OF NIGERIAN ARTISTS ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVES

From October 24 to 25, 2016, the Society of Nigerian Artists (SNA) held its 4th Annual Convention on Art and Development (CONADEV) at the University of Benin. The highlight was the SNA’s annual general meeting and elections into the National Executive Committee held on Tuesday October 25. An electoral committee made up of Prof. John Ogene (Chairman), Dr Nelson Edewor (Secretary), Mike Sagbodje and Mary Ameh conducted the elections. These elections saw the return of Oliver Enwonwu as President of the Society. Diseye Tantua emerged as Vice President, South East, Atiku Abubakar as Vice President North, Dr Adam Sheikh Lemu as Vice President North Central, Archibong Bassey as General-Secretary, Yemi Oladipo who returned as Treasurer, Binta Garba as Assistant General-Secretary, Bola Adalumo as Financial Secretary and Chidinma Nwankwo as Publicity Secretary. The Ex-Officios are Sir Chuka Nnabuife, Dr Harrie Bazunu and Comrade David Aigbe.The convention opened on Monday October 24, at the Akin-Deko Memorial Hall, University of Benin, with a conference. This featured a keynote address by Professor Frank Ugiomoh and paper presentations by professors John Ogene (University of Benin), Osa Egonwa (Delta State University), Best Ochigbo (University of Uyo) and Jacob Jari (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria). The founder of the Omooba Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon Art Foundation, Prince Yemisi Shyllon, the Honourable Minister of Information and Culture and Alhaji Lai Mohammed also attended the event as chairman and special guest of honour respectively. MD/CEO of Arthouse Contemporary was also in attendance as guest of honour while the chief host was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof F. F. O. Orumwense. That same evening, a dinner took place, which featured the award of fellowships and prizes to individuals who have contributed towards the development of art in Nigeria. There was also a performance by world-renowned artist, Jelili Atiku, a comedy skit by Prosper Akeni and music provided by the Praisemud Band.
